Pundit View: Robbie Savage believes Arsenal could struggle against Sheffield United

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

BT Sport pundit Robbie Savage believes that Arsenal could become unstuck when they travel to Bramall Lane to face Sheffield United on Monday night.

What’s the word?

The Gunners’ face the 157-mile trip north to face the newly-promoted Blades after gaining automatic promotion with a second-place finish in the Championship last season.

During the current campaign, Chris Wilder’s side almost pulled off a shock upset against Premier League leaders Liverpool. After goalkeeper Dean Henderson fumbled Georginio Wijnaldum’s effort into his own net, Sheffield United lost 1-0 to the Merseyside club after what was a solid defensive display from the Yorkshire based-outfit.

Savage, who played Premier League football for various sides including Leicester City and Blackburn Rovers, has predicted in the Mirror that the Arsenal will not walk away with all three points from the affair but hold out instead for a 1-1 draw.

Two players can make the difference

Savage underestimates what the Gunners can do.

Arsenal have taken a step forward this season after finding themselves third in the Premier League after eight games, despite receiving criticism about the lack of imagination in attacking areas. This came to light after Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

However, two Gunners’ players are capable of turning the tide during the game against Sheffield United on Monday night.

Dani Ceballos, who is on a season-long loan from Real Madrid, is one of them.

In the video below, we look at where it all went wrong for Arsenal’s former ‘saviour’, Mesut Ozil…

The Spaniard has had a bright start to life in north London and has been a valuable asset to boss Unai Emery’s team. During his first eight games, he has conjured up two assists in the Premier League as well as a passing accuracy of 89%.

His technical ability with the ball is matched with his ability to involve attackers ahead of him, enclosed in a typical 4-3-3 formation that Emery likes to play. With an average of 1.1 key passes and 1.4 successful dribbles per game, these traits that Ceballos has will help unlock the Sheffield United defence.

The second player is only on the basis that Alexandre Lacazette is not deemed fit enough to feature, and that is Bukayo Saka.

What an impressive start the 18-year-old has had to his Arsenal career. The youngster excelled during Arsenal’s 1-1 draw against Manchester United and outshone his £72m teammate Nicolas Pepe in the process.

Having scored one goal and provided three assists in all competitions, Saka has a bright future at the Gunners. His ability to run at full-backs and pick out a pass will trouble the Blades’ defensive line. The England U19 international was praised by former Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas, who said that he was a player who is showing great maturity, as per the Metro.

Savage is wrong by saying that the Gunners will struggle, purely on the basis that they have players that can hurt Sheffield United.

Both Ceballos and Saka will have a significant impact on the game if the manager picks them. If Emery utilises them properly, Arsenal will leave Bramall Lane with all three points.

Rangers fans delighted on Twitter as they move top in Scotland

Rangers moved to the top of the Scottish Premiership on Sunday afternoon as a dramatic day north of the border played out in the top flight.

The Gers saw Glasgow rivals Celtic slump to a poor 2-0 away defeat at the Tony Macaroni Arena against Livingston earlier in the day and knew that a win against Hamilton Academical at Ibrox would see them move top.

As well as that, they surely wanted to right a few wrongs from the game against Young Boys in the Europa League last Thursday, and they duly did with a thumping 5-0 victory.

A win was expected, of course, but the Gers still pulled it off in emphatic style go first in the league and as we head into the international break they will be the most buoyant of the two Old Firm teams.

Here, then, we’re looking at the reaction from Gers fans to the win, with some of the best of the responses on Twitter below:

Tottenham fans divided on Eddie Howe being an option to replace Pochettino

[ad_pod ]

Loads of Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter are split on the idea of Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe replacing Mauricio Pochettino, should he leave.

Following another disappointing result on the road against Leicester City on Saturday which has left Spurs without an away win in the Premier League since they beat Fulham in January, supporters on the popular social media platform began to talk about who could replace the 47-year-old.

One name that was getting a lot of traction was that of Howe, who led his team to a 3-1 win on the road at south coast rivals Southampton on Friday night.

The 41-year-old has worked wonders with the Cherries over the years, and this season is their fifth successive one in the English top flight.

Their record of 212 goals from 158 Premier League matches backs up the fact the former Burnley boss likes to play attacking football, although they are also susceptible to conceding, too – as shown by the 275 goals conceded.

Tottenham supporters are certainly divided on Howe, with one saying Levy will know that he wouldn’t be able to guarantee Champions League football every season, but another said “Eddie Howe would be my choice”.

Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Nottingham Forest’s Aro Muric wastes chance against England

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In Numbers series, which takes a statistical look at performances, season-long form and reported transfer targets…

England at one stage looked to be cruising to another comprehensive victory in the Euro 2020 qualifiers on Tuesday evening.

Gareth Southgate’s men hit back at Kosovo with five goals after the visitors took a shock lead in the first minute of the game at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium.

A brace from Jadon Sancho as well as goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane meant the home nation went into the break 5-1 up but the visitors had England nervous after two goals in the space of six second-half minutes.

Kane then missed a penalty, but the Spurs striker and his teammates managed to cling on to sit three points clear in Group A.

Nottingham Forest had an unlikely hand in helping the Three Lions to victory but not in the way you’d expect.

Their goalkeeper Aro Muric started in goal for Kosovo and put in a rather ponderous display which ultimately contributed to Southgate’s men picking up all three points.

The 20-year-old, who is on loan from Premier League champions Manchester City, was the man that saved Kane’s spot-kick but aside from that he still leaked five goals which ended their unbeaten run in the competition.

Muric made all six of his saves from inside the penalty area and at 6 foot 6 he understandably managed three high claims inside the box too.

However, his distribution wasn’t great as he managed only 26 accurate passes which was 74% of his total amount, per SofaScore – considering he’s a goalkeeper and is most likely passing out to his defence that should be a lot closer to the maximum percentage.

The Reds colossus was also off the mark with long balls, recording an accuracy rate of just 35%, meaning he likely invited the pressure back on his country as he wasn’t able to find a Kosovar player on a regular basis.

His performance certainly won’t be boosting his claims for the number one spot upon return to the east Midlands and after this showing, he is unlikely to weave his way back into the thoughts of Sabri Lamouchi.

This could have been a big chance for him to stake a claim against high-class opposition but besides the penalty save, he didn’t do too much right.

Exclusive: John Hartson believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is "massive" for Arsenal

[ad_pod ]

In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, John Hartson has said Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is essential to Arsenal’s hopes this season.

The Gabon international had a wonderful campaign last time out as he bagged the Premier League Golden Boot along with Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

In Europe, too, he was in stellar form, netting eight strikes in 12 games on the road to Baku.

If the Gunners are to make it to Gdansk for this term’s showpiece, Hartson believes the 30-year-old will need to be at the top of his game.

He said, “He’s massive, massive for them. He came in, took a bit of pressure off Lacazette and then they started linking up together brilliantly, especially in the Europa League.

“He’s a tremendous finisher, he’s quick, he’s bright, he’s alert, he’s the full package really.”

However, despite his obvious talent, the former Celtic forward believes he still needs help from his teammates if the north London outfit are to put a strong run together.

“But also as well, he needs a bit of help, he can’t do it on his own. He needs the likes of Ceballos and Ozil to help him out. I’m a huge fan but he can’t do it all. Other players have to step up around him as well.”

Indeed, Aubameyang’s importance to Arsenal cannot be understated. His record since joining from Borussia Dortmund is impeccable, with him scoring 47 times in 71 appearances. None of his teammates have been able to come close during his time at the club.

However, as Hartson says, he will need help along the way. He is a finisher, but he needs someone to provide him with the chances to tuck away.

If he can strike up a partnership with one of the more creative players behind him, though, there is no reason why Arsenal can’t enjoy a truly successful season.

Rangers fans are livid at Livingston League Cup draw for one reason

Rangers will travel to Livingston in an all-Premiership tie in the League Cup quarter-finals, and the supporters are furious they’ll have to play on an artificial pitch again.

Steven Gerrard’s men earned their place in the last eight of the League Cup thanks to a comfortable 3-0 win over third-tier East Fife on Sunday.

Goals from Jermain Defoe, Filip Helander and Joe Aribo gave the Light Blues a comfortable passage through to the quarter-finals and a trip to the Tony Macaroni.

The draw hasn’t gone down well with the fans for the simple reason of Livi having an astroturf pitch, a surface that doesn’t necessarily suit the style of football Gerrard wants his Gers side to play.

As well as suiting Gary Holt’s side’s more direct style of play, the Ibrox faithful are fearful of synthetic surfaces, and for good reason. Jamie Murphy picked up a season-ending injury in August 2018 at Rugby Park, which has a similar surface to Almondvale.

Here’s what they had to say on Twitter about the tricky draw:

Leicester: Supporters on Twitter call for fast Chilwell recovery

Leicester City got their second point on the board yesterday when the Foxes left Stamford Bridge with a point after a well-fought 1-1 draw. However, they had to do so without the injured Ben Chilwell, who took to Twitter before the game to say that he’d be back soon.

The young England international defender’s absence meant that it was a return to the starting eleven for Christian Fuchs, the Austrian defender who was the club’s first-choice left-back during their title-winning 2015/16 season.

Without Chilwell, Brendan Rodgers’ side still managed to secure an impressive 1-1 draw away at Stamford Bridge, but having the young defender back in the side will be a big boost. Indeed, last season saw the defender contribute four assists, as well as averaging 1.5 tackles, 3.6 clearances and 1.1 interceptions per game, WhoScored.

You can read the Foxes’ calls for a speedy recovery from Chilwell here:

The Leicester fans, as you can see, will be keen for Chilwell to return against Sheffield United next weekend as they continue to chase their first win of the season.

Arsenals fans on keen on signing Brazil star Everton after summer link

Newcastle eyeing sensational swoop for Danny Rose

[ad_pod ]

Various reports have suggested Steve Bruce wants to bring Danny Rose to Newcastle, and what a signing it could be.

What’s the story?

The Daily Star reported over the weekend that Rose is a target for Bruce.

The report claimed the new Magpies boss wants to strengthen the left-back position, and is eyeing a £15m swoop for Rose after he was left out of Spurs’ pre-season tour of Asia.

Now, The Chronicle have confirmed Rose is “on Bruce’s list of possibilities”, and The Shields Gazette has also said the club want to sign “an attacking left-back” this summer.

Perfect signing

There’s really no other way to look at this – signing Rose for a measly £15m would be sensational business from the Magpies.

At 29 years of age with a serious knee injury on his record from 2017, it makes sense that Spurs are looking to sell as they freshen up their squad, but Rose is still an elite left-back.

Per Transfermarkt, he has played 14 times in the Champions League, including last year’s final in Madrid of course, and also has 27 England caps to his name, including five at the World Cup.

Across 171 Premier League appearances he has grabbed nine goals and 23 assists, and you only need to look at Spurs fans’ reactions to his potential exit to see what they think about him.

Mauricio Pochettino has always had a reputation for improving full-backs, from Luke Shaw to Kyle Walker, and Rose’s time under the Argentine boss will have worked wonders for him as well.

All in all, if Newcastle can fix a position Bruce has identified as a weakness with a Premier League and internationally proven player, who played 90 minutes in last year’s Champions League final, all for £15m, it would be an excellent piece of business from the club.
