Newcastle must land Palace’s Wilfried Zaha

Newcastle must look to land Crystal Palace star Wilfried Zaha this summer amid Marcus Bent’s transfer claim.

What’s the story?

The Ivory Coast international has long been linked with a move away from Selhurst Park, with reports last summer suggesting that Steve Bruce’s side were very much one of the clubs interested in signing him.

Now, speaking to FFC’s sister site, This is Futbol, Bent has touted the Magpies as a potential destination for Zaha were he to finally leave the Eagles this summer.

He said: “Zaha has not been that consistent this year, but we know he’s a talent. We spoke about him going to Everton, two years ago Everton would have snapped at the chance, but I don’t think he’s a player they want.

“Newcastle would be a great team to go to. He needs a bigger pedestal to play on and better players around him.”

Imagine him and Saint-Maximin

Already boasting one of the Premier League’s elite dribblers in Allan Saint-Maximin, Bruce could help form a terrifying Newcastle duo by landing Zaha this summer and unleashing him with the Frenchman as a wing duo.

Zaha’s average of 4.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League last season was only bettered by two players: Wolves’ Adama Traore, and Saint-Maximin himself. Their abilities to play across the front-line could see them interchange positions, and make for the kind of modern forward-line used by the likes of Liverpool and Barcelona of yesteryear.

In fact, Zaha’s Palace teammate James McArthur waxed lyrical about his abilities back in 2018, saying: “He is just unplayable at times and I wouldn’t like to be a defender playing against him. For us, he is a great asset when you can give someone the ball and he can run 40 yards with it.”

Essentially, Zaha would bring a lot of the same characteristics that Saint-Maximin has in his locker.

The £40.5m-rated star would ensure that Newcastle had an added threat to go along with Saint-Maximin, and that if teams do try and double up on the Frenchman, then Zaha would have more space himself to wreak havoc.

It would cause opposition defences all sorts of dilemmas about how best to deal with the two of them on song together, and why it could be a scary prospect for the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Newcastle are eyeing this former Premier League starlet…

West Ham set for huge boost over Moyes

David Moyes is close to agreeing on a new long-term contract at West Ham United…

What’s the word?

That’s according to the Evening Standard’s Jack Rosser, who claims the 58-year-old has been in talks with co-owner David Sullivan over something more permanent following the East Londoners’ phenomenal rise under his tenure.

The Scotsman does have a one-year extension which can be triggeres as part of the deal he signed upon his return to the London Stadium in December 2019 but that is due to expire at the end of the current campaign.

Moyes was let go during his first stint and was not offered the chance to build on his work at the club, so this would seem like a fresh and positive approach from the Irons’ hierarchy this time around.

Huge boost

The Hammers have enjoyed a remarkable change in fortunes under Moyes’ leadership, going from firm relegation candidates to being one game away from qualifying for Europe.

A point to Southampton on Sunday will seal a place in the Europa League next season, over the likes of Spurs, Everton and Arsenal, which is certainly some feat considering they survived with one game to go last year.

Moyes deserves a lot of credit for returning to the club that ditched him and then subsequently guiding them to what will be their best-ever finish since the 1998/99 campaign.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-ham-news-transfer-rumours-and-the-latest-gossip” title= “Read the latest West Ham news, transfer rumours, gossip and more!”]

His recruitment in the transfer window, signing unknown names like Tomas Soucek and Vladimir Coufal, as well as keeping hold of Declan Rice and bringing in Jesse Lingard on loan at just the right time, has played a major role.

Whilst he’s had to deal with a fair share of injuries too.

Even then, that would be an understatement as it’s been quite the nightmare – at one stage, the Hammers boss was without five or six first-team starters and that still hasn’t derailed their season, surprisingly.

The fact that Moyes and Sullivan have been talking at Rush Green over fresh terms is hugely encouraging and shows that they have learned from their previous mistakes.

It’s time for the club to build on this phenomenal run and prove that they aren’t merely one-season wonders, and that’ll be done by putting more faith into the former Manchester United and Everton boss.

This development should serve as a major boost across the club, and as a result, fans will be absolutely buzzing.

Nat Phillips impressed for Liverpool

Liverpool jumped to fourth place in the Premier League table with an impressive 3-0 victory over Burnley on Wednesday night, significantly boosting their Champions League qualification hopes.

Although the scoreline was eventually convincing, Jurgen Klopp’s men struggled to get a foothold in the game after a fast start from their hosts, who were evidently keen to impress the 3000 home fans.

It could have been a much different outcome had New Zealand international striker Chris Wood finished a golden opportunity when he got in behind the Liverpool defence, but the Reds dug deep and eventually overcame their much-improved opponents.

A cool and composed Roberto Firmino finish just before half-time swung the game in the visitor’s favour, however, a far less celebrated member of the Liverpool side was the real hero in midweek.

Nat Phillips has been thrust into the limelight this season due to the season-ending injuries picked up by Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip, and after a tough start to life in the top-flight, the 24-year-old has put in a string of improved performances in recent weeks.

None, though, were as impressive as his display last night. As per SofaScore, the centre-back recorded a rating of 8.9/10, the highest mark out of anyone on the Turf Moor pitch.

Phillips also won 13 of his 19 duels, made nine clearances, one of which was a goal-saving clearance off the line, and also had a passing accuracy of 79%. It was a solid, all-around performance from the Englishman who appears to be growing in stature week in week out.

To top off his fine evening’s work, Phillips popped up with his first senior Liverpool goal, crashing in a fine header to secure the three points and put the Anfield outfit one game away from securing their place in next season’s Champions League.

The result made it four consecutive league wins for Klopp’s charges, and after the 4-2 victory over bitter rivals Manchester United last week, the German manager was full of praise for Phillips and his defensive partner Rhys Williams.

“The concentration level (Phillips and Williams) showed (on Thursday) night again is immense, absolutely insane what they did there. Against this front four of United, it’s not easy,” Klopp said (via Liverpoolfc.com).

Liverpool are now sitting in fourth position in the Premier League standings, level on points with Leicester City but with a superior goal difference. Victory over Crystal Palace on the final day of the season should secure their return to Europe’s elite cup competition despite the odds being stacked against them for most of the season.

Calvert-Lewin out for Everton vs Tottenham

Many Everton fans have been left to bemoan an injury update on Dominic Calvert-Lewin before they play Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League.

Speaking in his pre-game press conference ahead of the match against Spurs at Goodison Park, Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that the former Sheffield United ace will not be able to play any part, although the Italian boss also said that he will be back for the Merseyside club next week.

Nonetheless, it is a big blow for the Toffees to lose their talisman up top in what could be a crucial six-pointer in terms of fighting to qualify for European competition for the 2021/22 term, with the two teams so close to each other in the top-flight table.

These Blues bemoaned the injury update on Calvert-Lewin after it was shared on Twitter, with one EFC supporter even going as far as to claim that losing the England international is a ‘big miss’ against Jose Mourinho’s side:

Gers’ McCrorie discusses Gers future

Robby McCrorie has refused to rule out another loan exit away from Glasgow Rangers next season.

McCrorie discusses Gers future

23-year-old McCrorie is currently on loan at Livingston in the Premiership and has played 14 games in the top flight so far this term (Transfermarkt), with boss Gary Holt calling him “excellent” on his league debut (The Scottish Sun).

Speaking ahead of Livingston’s clash with Hibernian this weekend, McCrorie was discussing his Rangers future, and he refused to rule out leaving on a temporary basis once more. He said (via sportsmole.co.uk):

“We have six league games left and hopefully a run in the Scottish Cup but I don’t think I can look too far in terms of the summer.

“It is not really up to me what happens, that is up to the gaffer at Rangers.

“I will go in at pre-season or whatever and try to do my best. It will be a case of looking at it.

“But I love playing football so I would probably be open to going out on loan again but we will see.

“I signed a deal in the summer so I have another two years at Rangers after this season. The most important thing for any young player is to be playing games.

“I will go back at the end of the season, assess what is best for going forward and I have all the support networks to help me get where I need to go.”

Plenty of competition

At 23, McCrorie will have been hoping to have already broken into the Gers side. Unfortunately, he has one of the greatest goalkeepers in the club’s history in front of him in Allan McGregor. The 39-year-old has kept 16 clean sheets in 23 league matches this campaign and has shipped just seven times – he is arguably as good at the moment as he has ever been.

Still, it is clear McGregor is approaching the end of his career. When he does eventually retire, McCrorie could well have a chance to finally establish himself as the Gers’ number one. The youngster just has to be patient and wait for his opportunity.

Mabbutt tells Spurs fans not to panic

Tottenham Hotspur legend Gary Mabbutt insists that there is no reason for fans to panic over the club’s form in such a bizarre season.

The Premier League season is being contested behind closed doors because of the ongoing pandemic and Mabbutt has told Football FanCast that such conditions are only likely to add to the bizarre results we have seen at times this season.

Indeed, Spurs have struggled under Jose Mourinho and fell to ninth in the Premier League table at one point.

Their win over Burnley at the weekend means they are still just six points off the top four, though, with a game in hand on fourth-placed West Ham United.

And Mabbutt insists there is absolutely no reason for fans to worry given that the season is largely upside down.

He has cited Liverpool as an example, with the Premier League champions, who lost just three games last season, currently sixth in the Premier League table, with seven defeats to their name.

They are 19 points off league leaders Manchester City, and are almost certain to lose their title this season.

Speaking to FFC earlier this week, Mabbutt said: “People talk about how we’ve fallen away since December, we were top of the table mid December, and then we slipped away a little bit.

“Well, it’s exactly that: slipped away a little bit. In real terms, in a normal season, dropping from top to ninth would be, ‘how did that happen?’

“But in this current season, when you’ve got the champions who pulverised everyone before them last season, lying in sixth place, whatever, and losing their last four games at home. Excuse me, it’s just an absolutely one off season that is seeing results no one would expect.”

Mabbutt also expressed his sympathy for the conditions the players are being forced to play in, with him making the point that the Premier League is being played in “training ground conditions”.

He added: “It’s proven football is just not football, as we know it, without fans in the stadium. I mean, I feel sorry for the players. And for the staff.

“It’s the crowd in the stadium that wants to create the passion, the intensity, the excitement, it’s the players that rebound off that support, off the crowd. And it’s like playing in the biggest football league in the world, under training ground conditions, and that is not easy.

“For players to build themselves up, getting mentally right to get there, totally concentrated, is very, very difficult. And I do feel sorry for them. But that’s the way it is.”
