Pietersen out of Champions Trophy

Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the Champions Trophy and could face a race to be fit in time for the Ashes as he continues his rehabilitation from a knee injury. The ECB said on Wednesday that it expected Pietersen to resume full training in mid-June, less than four weeks before the first Test against Australia at Trent Bridge on July 10.Pietersen missed the third Test of England’s tour of New Zealand after suffering bruising to his right knee and it had already been announced that the batsman would not be considered for the return series, starting next month. Playing in the Champions Trophy was the next target but it has been deemed that he will not be ready for the tournament, which runs from June 6-23.An ECB statement read: “Kevin Pietersen has been ruled out of the ICC Champions Trophy following a repeat MRI scan on his right knee earlier today. The scan has shown some improvement in the bruising to the bone that occurred in the build up to the Test Series against New Zealand in February. However Pietersen will not have recovered sufficiently in time for the NatWest one-day series against New Zealand beginning May 31 and the Champions Trophy which follows. Pietersen will now start a graduated rehabilitation program with a view to resuming full training by the middle of June.”The news is not altogether unexpected, with England taking a cautious approach to managing Pietersen’s knee problem ahead of back-to-back Ashes series, and comes shortly after the announcement of Australia’s touring squad. Pietersen has been wearing a brace to aid his recovery, although there is currently no suggestion that surgery will be required. When he flew home from New Zealand, where he was injured in a warm-up match at Queenstown, a timeframe of eight weeks was given, forcing his withdrawal from the entire IPL. The two home Tests against New Zealand, beginning on May 16, would also have come too soon but his absence for the Champions Trophy is a blow to England’s hopes of winning a global 50-over competition for the first time.Should his recovery progress as the ECB hopes, Pietersen could play for Surrey in the Championship against Yorkshire starting on June 21. England then have a four-day game against Essex starting on June 30 to prepare for the Ashes although even that schedule would only leave him a maximum eight days of first-class cricket since the middle of March.Pietersen returned to England’s ODI team for the first time in almost a year against India in January after his temporary retirement from limited-overs internationals in 2012. England’s rotation policy meant Jonathan Trott was rested for that series, with Joe Root making an immediate impression in the middle order and when Pietersen sat out the ODIs in New Zealand, Root improved his record to 326 runs at 81.50.With Trott, Alastair Cook and Ian Bell all expected to bat at the top of the order, England will now be heavily reliant on Eoin Morgan to provide the sort of impetus that Pietersen is capable of in one-day cricket. The priority of retaining the Ashes, however, is clearly of greater concern.

ScorecardAkbar-ur-Rehman’s all-round performance helped Karachi Zebras humble Karachi Dolphins by 81 runs, taking them to the final of the Faysal Bank One Day Cup. The Zebras will take on Lahore Lions in the final on Saturday. The Dolphins, with Mohammad Sami and Sohail Khan in their side, won a good toss and opted to bowl. The Zebras had a steady start as Khurram Manzoor (60) and Akbar-ur-Rehman (63) built a solid foundation with a second-wicket stand of 89 runs after the loss of opener Fakhar Zaman (22). The middle order didn’t consolidate well and kept losing wickets regularly. A late cameo from Javed Mansoor (33) propelled the Zebras to a formidable score.Dolphins, with a more experienced line-up, had a wobbly chase as opener Khalid Latif (2) was dismissed by Anwar Ali in the third over and Saeed Bin Nasir (3) was run out in the fourth over. They soon lost five wickets for six runs, going from 82 for 3 to 88 for 8. Top-scorer Shahzaib Hasan (42) and Sarfaraz Ahmed (36) tried to negotiate the Zebras’ disciplined bowling but were bogged by Akbar-ur-Rehman (3-13) and Misbah Khan (3-38). The Dolphins were dismissed for 158 in 43.1 overs. The victory has made the Zebras the most successful side in the ongoing domestic season – they were unbeaten in their title victory during the Quaid-e-Azam trophy in Lahore last month and will now look to maintain their unbeaten streak by beating Lahore Lions in Rawalpindi on Saturday.

Manchester United owners, Adani Group among 22 entities bidding for new IPL teams

The teams will have to be based in any two cities out of Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Indore and Lucknow

Nagraj Gollapudi22-Oct-2021Lancer Capital, whose principal is Avram Glazer, a member of the family that owns a majority stake at Manchester United football club, is one of the 22 business entities to have picked up bid documents for the two new IPL franchises. The details of the franchises are likely to be announced by the BCCI next week.Among the other notable potential bidders are Adani Group, the Ahmedabad-based infrastructure giants, the Sanjeev Goenka-owned business conglomerate RPSG, the Naveen Jindal-owned Jindal Steel, Torrent Pharma, Aurobindo Pharma, and Hindustan Times Media, along with a number of private equity companies. The bids will be opened at a walk-in event to be held in Dubai on October 25.The teams, which will be a part of the IPL from 2022, will have to be based in any two out of six Indian cities listed in the tender document listed by the BCCI: Ahmedabad, Cuttack, Dharamsala, Guwahati, Indore and Lucknow. While investors can bid for more than one city, they will eventually have to settle for one.A senior BCCI official said that based on how soon the technical evaluation of the successful bids are done, the board will determine whether to announce the two new franchises and the cities on the same day or later.According to the original timeline, the bids were meant to be opened on October 17, but it was delayed as the BCCI deferred the deadline to buy the tender twice – first October 10 and then October 20 – citing wide interest from potential bidders. This is the first time the BCCI is adding two new franchises since Rising Pune Supergiant/s and Gujarat Lions took part in the IPL for two years – 2016 and 2017 – when Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were suspended. The BCCI is eyeing a big purse from the two new IPL teams. The BCCI has set a base price of INR 2000 crore [US$ 267 million approx.] for each of the two new franchises. One of the requirements listed in the tender document is that the bidders must show a turnover of at least INR 3000 crore [US$ 400 million approx.] for the previous three years. If it is a consortium, then each investor would need to show a turnover of at least INR 2500 crore [US$ 334 million approx.] for the previous three years.Large numbers they might be, but some of the potential bidders have vast and diversified business interests globally. For example, on the company website, the Adani Group lists its “market cap of over USD 122.45 billion comprising six publicly traded companies”. Another Indian business heavyweight, Jindal Steel & Power, has put its annual turnover at “USD 5.5 billion” on its website. Incidentally, Naveen Jindal’s brother Sajjan Jindal owns Jindal Steel Works, who is the co-owner of Delhi Capitals. This is the second time RPSG is attempting to buy an IPL franchise after owning the Pune-based Supergiant/s for two years. The group also owns teams in other franchise-based sports, including the ATK Mohun Bagan in the Indian Super League and the RPSG Mavericks in the table tennis league.

'Will be wary of spinners' – Taylor

Ross Taylor, New Zealand captain, has said that his team’s focus wouldn’t shift beyond the matches in the group stage in the World Twenty20

New Zealand would take heart from a morale-boosting one-run win in Chennai•Associated Press

New Zealand will be wary of its group-stage opponents in the World Twenty20 and won’t look “too far ahead” early in the tournament, its captain Ross Taylor has said. New Zealand are in Group D along with Bangladesh and Pakistan.New Zealand pulled off a thrilling one-run T20 win against India in Chennai on Tuesday, which capped their tough tours of West Indies and India over the past two months. But Taylor said the threat of the Bangladesh and Pakistan spinners in Sri Lankan conditions would stop his team from being overconfident.”We’ve got a tough pool in Pakistan and Bangladesh and we don’t want to look too far ahead of those two matches,” he said.”Twenty20 is a game where you now have to play attacking but they do have world-class spinners in their sides and we need to acknowledge that and allow our players to combat it,” Taylor said.New Zealand play Australia and South Africa in two warm-up games before their first match of the tournament on September 21.”Australia played very well in their last game, I’m sure they’ll take a lot of confidence from that. The way [David] Warner and Watto [Shane Watson] batted set a very good platform for the side. Any New Zealand-Australia game is obviously competitive and we’ll be looking forward to trying a few things and obviously want us to win the game as well.”On Tuesday, New Zealand, after being in a position to lose for a major part of India’s chase, stuck together a few economical overs at the death through James Franklin and Jacob Oram to take them to victory. Taylor, however, said the win shouldn’t affect their focus on the upcoming tournament.”I think it gives you a little bit of confidence but you don’t want to get too carried away. It’s just one win.”New Zealand’s coach Mike Hesson, hinted that the side would start experimenting once they were “confident about our own game”.”It’s sort of adjusting to the changing humidity, which will take a couple of days so a couple of good trainings and get ready for the warm-up game. Just making sure we give everyone some decent opportunities. Obviously, the key is once we get to the Bangladesh game, once we feel confident about our own game, we’ll certainly give a number of people different opportunities,” Hesson said.He was especially pleased with the side’s resilience to respond positively to the Hyderabad Test, Hesson’s first match as a coach, to run India close in the second Test in Bangalore and finally notch up a win in Chennai.”It was certainly a challenging start: playing in Hyderabad was obviously difficult in terms of quick turnaround from the trip to the West Indies. But I thought the progress the guys showed in Bangalore in the second Test certainly showed improvements with the bat especially, in terms of intent and in terms of defensive spells against the spin bowling, I thought we made good improvements there.”We were frustrated to have the Twenty20 washed out [in Visakhapatnam] but the character we showed in the second T20 against a good side in Chennai gives the guys a lot of confidence heading into the tournament.”The game involved a collision between Kyle Mills and Brendon McCullum as they went to take catch off Yuvraj Singh. Mills, who left the field immediately, will have an x-ray on his left cheek, which Hesson mentioned as a precautionary measure.”He’s going to go for an x-ray today, just of his cheek and just make sure there’s no break there. We’re pretty confident there’s not, but it’s always nice to check that out. And he’s also got a fairly badly bruised hip so we just have to assess where he’s at.”A team decision may be taken on the role of McCullum, who is suffering stiffness in his knee and right arm.

Harmison jeered in Kent chase

Ben Harmison was booed by Kent supporters at Tunbridge Wells as a last day run-chase against Hampshire run out of steam in near identical circumstances to last month’s pursuit in Canterbury against Northamptonshire.

ScorecardLiam Dawson’s century set up a Kent run chase at Tunbridge Wells but boos sounded when Ben Harmison was unable to escape a run of poor form•Getty ImagesThere was a sense of déjà vu amongst Kent supporters at Tunbridge Wells after watching their side’s last day run-chase against Hampshire run out of steam in near identical circumstances to last month’s pursuit in Canterbury against Northamptonshire. When the teams shook hands on a draw at 6pm, Kent had laboured to reach 220 for 6 and were a weighty 84 runs of their target, having agreed to chase 304 off a minimum of 70 overs.Having made a decent enough start through openers Rob Key and Sam Northeast, Kent’s attempts to keep up with an asking rate of 4.34 an over were quickly derailed after lunch. Both batsmen struggled to hit Hampshire’s wily allrounder Dimitri Mascarenhas off the square, let alone to the boundary, and by the time Key went leg before to Kadir Ali, the asking rate was already approaching 5.5 an over.Northeast, only recently restored to the side after Kent ended the loan stay of Middlesex opener Scott Newman, manfully tried to work the ball around in posting a 94-ball 50, but at the other end Ben Harmison was struggling to find form.Harmison, the winter recruit from Chester-le-Street, was branded the villain of the piece at St Lawrence in May when Kent also fell well short against Andrew Hall’s Northamptonshire, and once more, the likeable lad from Durham had to endure the scorn of Kent supporters. It might have been fairer to Harmison had Kent promoted the likes of Geraint Jones, Darren Stevens or Matt Coles at the fall of Key’s wicket. Instead, they sent in Harmison, a player fighting to retain his place in the side and a batsman out of sorts. Little wonder then that the asking rate soon rocketed to 6.2 an over. After hanging around for 32 balls for his 11 runs, Harmison – in a sad moment of sacrifice – clipped one straight to mid-wicket and trooped off to contemplate a probable appearance in the Kent second string.Too late perhaps, Kent sent in Stevens, but he perished for a cameo 28 when caught on the cover boundary, then Coles was also pushed up the order to bludgeon only to miscue his way to 18 from 27 balls before he too holed out to cover.Once Northeast perished to a low catch at cover, Kent’s last chance of success rested on the shoulders of overseas batter Brendan Nash. For a moment the former West Indies Test player appeared capable of pulling off the impossible but, with his score on 18, he leant back to cut against Kabir Ali to see Carberry pull off his third excellent catch.One-time Glamorgan stalwart Michael Powell then teamed up with honorary Welshman Jones to play out time for the draw with Kent taking five points to Hampshire’s six.The run-chase followed Hampshire’s declaration half-an-hour before lunch on 303 for 8 and with Liam Dawson still unbeaten on 134. That sparked a double forfeiture and hopes for a thrilling finale to the match but sadly, it all proved to be something of a false dawn.

Yuvraj Singh out of Australia ODIs

Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the one-day tri-series to be played in Australia following the ongoing Test series

ESPNcricinfo staff13-Jan-2012Yuvraj Singh has been ruled out of the one-day tri-series to be played in Australia following the ongoing Test series. ESPNcricinfo has learnt that he is yet to fully recover from the non-malignant lung tumour that has kept him out of the team since the home ODIs against West Indies. He has been training at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore, and while his condition is better since the time the tumour was discovered, he does not want to rush back into cricket until his recovery is complete.Yuvraj hasn’t played ODIs since his Player-of-the-Tournament performance in the World Cup. An injury kept him out of the tour of the West Indies, though, and his contribution to India’s tour of England was cut short by a finger injury sustained during the Nottingham Test. He returned for the home Tests against West Indies, and was left out of the side for the third Test, in November. He asked the BCCI to not consider him for selection for the home ODIs against West Indies because he wanted time to regain fitness. He was not considered for the Test series in Australia, which India currently trails 2-0.Yuvraj said he had been troubled by bouts of coughing and vomiting since the World Cup but had ignored the problem during the tournament, “assuming it was due to stress”. Subsequent tests revealed “a golf-ball sized” growth on his left lung. He went through several rounds of medical procedures in order to ascertain the exact nature of the tumour, which was eventually found to be non-malignant. Yuvraj had been targetting a comeback in the tri-series, also involving Sri Lanka, which kicks off on February 5, but is now unlikely to make a comeback until the Asia Cup in March.

Batsmen failed to take responsibility – Dilshan

Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lanka captain, has criticised his batsmen’s inability to take ownership of a modest chase during the fourth ODI against Pakistan

Umar Farooq in Sharjah21-Nov-2011Tillakaratne Dilshan, the Sri Lanka captain, has criticised his batsmen’s inability to take ownership of a modest chase during the fourth ODI against Pakistan in Sharjah, a defeat that cost them the five-match series. Chasing 201, Sri Lanka were on course to level the series at 155 for 3 before they collapsed, losing seven wickets for 19 runs.”It’s unbelievable to lose seven wickets for 20 odd runs,” Dilshan said. “[Shahid] Afridi batted and bowled well, but it was really disappointing to lose from a winning position. We were in a good position but we relaxed and no one took the responsibility. As a batting unit we should have finished the game.”As a captain I can’t do anything to change the players’ game. As a team unit we have to take responsibility.”Since the 2011 World Cup, Sri Lanka have lost Test and ODI series to England, Australia and Pakistan. Dilshan, however, said he didn’t think his leadership would come under scrutiny.”I don’t know what their [Sri Lanka Cricket] views are but I was appointed captain until the South Africa series [in December] so I didn’t think [about being removed] but lets see how things goes on.”Dilshan also called for the younger players in his side to take the opportunities they’re being given. “We are giving opportunities to the young players and they have to grab them. But at this point they aren’t and are throwing their wickets sometimes. They have to learn and show that they are ready for international cricket.”Sri Lanka have already lost the one-day series to Pakistan 1-3 with a match to go in Abu Dhabi, followed by a Twenty20 international on November 25. “We have to finish the series in a strong manner,” Dilshan said.
