£70k-p/w Leeds ace who's missed last 12 games returns to training after injury

With their sights set on Championship promotion, Leeds United are set to receive the boost of a returning star who hasn’t played since the start of the year in an injury-ridden campaign.

Leeds injury news

They may sit top of the Championship, but that doesn’t mean Leeds have had it easy on the injury front throughout the current campaign. At the beginning of the campaign, Daniel Farke was forced to turn towards the likes of Ao Tanaka earlier than planned due to an injury crisis in midfield. To his credit, the former Bundesliga midfielder has thrived at the heart of a side gunning for silverware and become one of their star men.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast at the end of the Championship campaign and everything still to play for, there’s no doubt that Farke will be keen to welcome key men back to his strongest side and get over the line in the race for promotion.

It looks as though the German is set to get his wish on that front too, having told reporters that Patrick Bamford is now back in training and on course for a return at Leeds for the first time in 12 games.

Leeds targeting fresh off-field move in key step towards replacing Kinnear

They’re reportedly set to lose their CEO…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 7, 2025

The former Norwich City manager said in his press conference when asked about potential returns: “Everyone who was available for the last game is available for this game, which is definitely good news. All were able to recover from knocks from the last game.

“Some other good news is Patrick Bamford was able to take part in team training this week. He was out for nine weeks, but he was able to handle the load and that’s good news because he is making good progress.

“It’s also good news on Ethan Ampadu and Max Wober and we are still hopeful we will have them the other side of the international break. We are hopeful for the run in.”

Bamford could provide unexpected boost

Whilst some may be quick to write Bamford off after a campaign full of injuries and a lack of goals, he could yet provide a surprising boost for Farke’s side at a crucial time. Of course, this isn’t the star striker who reached double figures in the Premier League, but he is still a player who should add vital depth and extensive experience in the Leeds dressing room.

Almost into the last year of his current £70,000-a-week contract, it remains to be seen whether Bamford will find himself at Elland Road as they potentially step into the Premier League. For now, his focus should be on making his mark on a season which has threatened to run away from him.

Having missed the last 12 games, the Whites shouldn’t rush the forward back to action as soon as Portsmouth, but games such as Queens Park Rangers next weekend could be one to keep an eye on if he continues to step up his recovery.

PSG booked their place in the Champions League final by beating Arsenal over two legs, while Inter got there after a pulsating victory over Barcelona in a modern-day European classic. Now, with the two sides set to lock horns in Germany, Lineker has backed the French side to go all the way, an achievement that would be all the more impressive given Kylian Mbappe's move to Real Madrid in the summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Lineker believes there would be a certain poetry to PSG going all the way in their first season without the Frenchman. PSG have never won the Champions League but the stars may well align this time around, with Mbappe watching on from the sidelines; Arsenal beat Real Madrid, but were unable to get past the World Cup winner's former employers.

  • WHAT GARY LINEKER SAID

Speaking on The Rest is Football, Lineker said: "I fancy PSG. I think it's their time. I think it's almost meant to be that Mbappe goes and then they win the damn thing! He goes to Real Madrid, that always wins, and then they don't. It'd be the first time in their history (PSG's), I think they won the European Cup Winners Cup in 1996, but this is obviously, for them, the Holy Grail. I've got a feeling it's almost meant to be this season."

Zimbabwe still fighting for 'a real highlight' semi-final spot

Captain Ervine says the team is still positive ahead of the clash against Netherlands, but a lot of things need to go right

Himanshu Agrawal01-Nov-20222:24

Moody: Zimbabwe will look to maintain momentum and popularity

Big pictureIt is not often that Zimbabwe stand a decent chance of qualifying for the semi-final of an ICC tournament. They were one win away from making the final four of the ICC Knockout – later renamed Champions Trophy – in 2000, but fell short against New Zealand; they made the Super Sixes in the 2003 World Cup, but fizzled out in the race to the last four. All these years later, a well-rated Zimbabwe unit led by an allrounder living a dream are two steps away from history. To begin, they will need to beat Netherlands, something they will surely fancy.Although they are still in contention, Zimbabwe need a collective performance to keep themselves afloat before the much-tougher challenge of India comes their way. Wessly Madhevere helped them rack up 79 in nine overs against South Africa but the rest of their batters hardly contributed, before the bowling was clubbed for 51 in three overs; but when they squeezed through a one-run win against Pakistan, it was their bowlers Sikandar Raza, Brad Evans, Blessing Muzarabani and Richard Ngarava who helped defend a meagre 130; and come Bangladesh, only Sean Williams made a defining contribution as Zimbabwe fell short by just three runs in pursuit of 151.For Netherlands, four out of their six games so far in this World Cup – including the first round – saw tight finishes. They won two of those four matches, before India and Pakistan brushed them aside. But like their bowlers showed by dismissing four batters and making Pakistan work hard even in their chase of 92, Netherlands aren’t easy to push over.Although they are already out of the tournament after threatening to upset Bangladesh in their first game of the Super 12s, the Dutch have certainly left their mark. After all, Max O’Dowd is the World Cup’s fifth-highest run-scorer and Bas de Leede is its joint second-highest wicket-taker.Zimbabwe and Netherlands don’t meet often – they have played each other only seven times across formats so far – No. 8 will be on the biggest stage and both teams will be relishing it.Sean Williams is one of Zimbabwe’s most experienced players•Getty Images

Form guideZimbabwe LWWLW (Last five completed matches; most recent first)
Netherlands LLLLWIn the spotlightZimbabwe will seek more consistency from their captain Craig Ervine and Sean Williams, two of their most experienced members in the current set-up. They have fallen for a combined seven single-digit scores in 12 innings since landing in Australia, even as Zimbabwe hope they can deliver when it matters most. Both are in the twilight of their careers, and what better opportunity to ensure they walk away with sweet memories?Netherlands’ bowlers have conceded 160-plus only twice across six matches in this competition. The show has been led by Bas de Leede, who has nine wickets at 14.44, while Paul van Meekeren isn’t far behind with seven at 19.42 and an excellent economy of 5.66. De Leede will turn 23 in a few days’ time; van Meekeren will turn 30 next January but Netherlands will hope these two can serve them just the same way for the years to come.Team newsZimbabwe have used 13 players in the Super 12s stage, with tweaks only in their bowling line-up. They wouldn’t want to make too many changes to what looks like a settled unit, with the only decision being whom to leave out in case they decide to recall Luke Jongwe.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Wessly Madhevere, 2 Craig Ervine (capt), 3 Milton Shumba, 4 Sean Williams, 5 Sikandar Raza, 6 Regis Chakabva (wk), 7 Ryan Burl, 8 Tendai Chatara, 9 Brad Evans, 10 Richard Ngarava, 11 Blessing MuzarabaniPaul van Meekeren has picked up seven wickets at an economy rate of 5.66 at the T20 World Cup•ICC/Getty Images

Netherlands have nothing to lose now, so might give opener Stephan Myburgh another go, considering this could be his farewell tournament. De Leede was substituted against Pakistan after being hit under his eye while batting and might miss out on WednesdayNetherlands (probable): 1 Vikramjit Singh, 2 Max O’Dowd, 3 Stephan Myburgh, 4 Tom Cooper, 5 Colin Ackermann, 6 Scott Edwards (capt, wk), 7 Roelof van der Merwe, 8 Tim Pringle, 9 Logan van Beek, 10 Fred Klaasen, 11 Paul van MeekerenPitch and conditionsIt was cold and windy in the build-up to the game in Adelaide, and it might still be cold on Wednesday with up to 2mm of rain also expected. However, the game is unlikely to be affected.Stats and trivia These two teams met at the highest level for the first time in the 2003 World Cup, where Bas de Leede’s father Tim was a part of the Netherlands’ side that lost to Zimbabwe. Side note: Bas’ cousin Babette also plays for the Netherlands women’s team. Sean Williams was in Zimbabwe’s squad for the inaugural T20 World Cup in 2007, where they beat Australia, and were eliminated in the group stages only on net run rate. Sikandar Raza’s strike rate of 150.56 is the second-highest for batters with at least 600 runs in T20Is in 2022.Quotes”The real highlight for us would be to make the semis. I think that would really put the icing on the cake. The guys are still very positive that we’ll get there. We’ve just got to come into these last two games with a lot of energy.”
“The novelty [of making it to Super 12s] has kind of worn off now after the first three games. We haven’t put in a complete performance in these three games, and so the guys are determined to change that when it comes to these last two matches and walk away with at least one win, but hopefully two wins.”

Real Madrid wages: Who is the best paid player at Los Blancos and everything you need to know about Madrid's salary bill

How much do Los Merengues players earn annually and who receives the most into their account?

It wouldn't be a stretch to say that Real Madrid are one of the biggest clubs in the world, and not just sportingly. Financially, not many clubs are as well run as Real Madrid. And the fact that they are among the most valuable clubs almost year after year is a testament to their board led by Florentino Perez.

Real Madrid, in the past five years or so, have shifted their transfer policy from spending exorbitant amounts on proven players to splashing on free agents and young stars with potential to become generation-defining players. Yeah, there's the odd Jude Bellingham transfer every two to three seasons, but they acquired Kylian Mbappe on a free, and might poach Trent Alexander-Arnold the same way in the summer.

The club continues to be mindful of the amount they pay in wages to every player. Mbappe, for example, had to take a significant wage cut after leaving PSG. However, their annual payroll is still among the most expensive in the world.

So, who is the highest earner at the Santiago Bernabeu this season? And who is on the opposite end of the spectrum?

GOAL delved into the numbers from Capology and found out!

    Goalkeepers

Real Madrid currently have just two goalkeepers on their payroll: Thibaut Courtois and Andriy Lunin. You might have guessed it already, but for the sake of the flow of this article, we'll tell you that the Belgian receives more salary among the two. In fact, he is on the higher end of the salary list when you consider all members of the squad.

    Name Salary
    Thibaut Courtois €15,000,000
    Andriy Lunin €4,500,000

    Defenders

The highest-paid defender at Madrid is David Alaba, earning a whopping €22,500,000 annually. In fact, he was the highest-paid player in the squad until last summer.

Antonio Rudiger and Eder Militao are earning the same salary as each other and find themselves higher on the list than long-time club servant and canterano Dani Carvajal, whose contract was renewed a few months ago following an ACL injury.

It isn't surprising that Ferland Mendy earns in eight figures, too, given how mighty his contributions have been in the past few years

    Name Salary
    David Alaba €22,500,000
    Antonio Rudiger €14,580,000
    Eder Militao €14,580,000
    Dani Carvajal €10,420,000
    Ferland Mendy €10,420,000
    Lucas Vazquez €9,380,000
    Fran Garcia €5,210,000
    Jesus Vallejo €1,800,000

    Midfielders

This one's a no-brainer. Yes, Jude Bellingham is the best-paid midfielder in the squad, way ahead of Fede Valverde.

The French duo of Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga are on high salaries, too, making over €12 million each.

Moreover, nobody can argue that Luka Modric doesn't deserve to earn eight figures annually, given that he's still got some magic left in him. His status as a player who comes off the bench might not warrant such a high salary, but his legacy and reputation certainly do.

Arda Guler, the 19-year-old Turkish in only his second season at the club, is the lowest-paid midfielder.

    Name Salary
    Jude Bellingham €20,830,000
    Fede Valverde €16,670,000
    Aurelien Tchouameni €12,500,000
    Eduardo Camavinga €12,500,000
    Luka Modric €10,420,000

    Attackers

As straightforward as it comes – Mbappe is the highest-paid forward in the squad, and the only player earning more than €30 million at Real Madrid. Vinicius Jr. comes in second spot.

While Rodrygo as the third-highest earning attacker makes sense, some fans may believe that he deserves to earn more. Many will also share those sentiments for Brahim Diaz, who earns a little over €7 million.

Endrick, who arrived last summer from Brazilian side Palmeiras, earns the least.

    Name Salary
    Kylian Mbappe €31,250,000
    Vinicius Jr. €20,830,000
    Rodrygo €12,500,000
    Brahim Diaz €7,290,000
    Endrick €4,160,000

Kusal Mendis takes Reds to victory after Theekshana's bowling impact

Ashen Bandara impressed for SLC Blues but their total never looked like being enough

An unbeaten 56 from Kusal Mendis anchored a relatively straightforward chase as SLC Reds secured a seven-wicket victory over SLC Blues to win the SLC Invitational T20 League. The tournament was organised at the eleventh hour, as the economic crisis enveloping Sri Lanka had forced the postponement of the Lanka Premier League. The idea was to allow fringe players to catch the eye of selectors ahead of the Asia Cup, and for those already in the national fold to cement their places. And for Reds, it was the national team stalwarts that produced the goods on the big occasion.Chasing down a modest target of 137, Reds barely broke a sweat, stitching partnerships together with ease, with Reds skipper Mendis a mainstay in each of them. The first was a 49-run opening stand with Lasith Croospulle, followed by partnerships of 19, 33 and 36, with Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Kamindu Mendis and Wanindu Hasaranga respectively. It was Hasaranga’s 14-ball 24-run cameo in the end that brought proceedings to a brisk close, as he walloped four boundaries in his brief stint, two of which came in what turned out to be the final over of the game.Praveen Jayawickrama was the pick of an otherwise ineffective Blues attack, picking up figures of 2 for 34.Credit, however, must go to Mendis, who blunted the rest of the attack with timely boundaries and was then content to turn over the strike, with scoreboard pressure a non-issue. His 56 came off 45 deliveries, and included four boundaries and a six. It was a mature knock, and one slightly more circumspect than his blistering 86 in the previous match – also against Blues. It meant that Reds would remain in control of proceedings for nearly the entirety of the game, with their bowlers having earlier put in a solid performance to throttle Blues’ batters.Maheesh Theekshana and the in-form Asitha Fernando picked up two wickets each, while Dunith Wellalage and Lahiru Madushanka grabbed one apiece. It was Theekshana who proved to be the proverbial battering ram, once again striking inside the powerplay in what is fast becoming his forte. He struck off the last ball of his second over, the third of the game, trapping Lahiru Samarakoon lbw, before completing a sensational return catch at the start of his next over to dismiss a dangerous-looking Sadeera Samarawickrama. This put him on a hat-trick, but while that feat was not meant to be he saw to it that his side started off on the front foot – an advantage they would scarcely look like surrendering as the match wore on.Matheesha Pathirana and, surprisingly, Hasaranga went wicketless, though the latter was miserly, giving away 24 in his four overs. Indeed, all the bowlers employed by Reds proved largely economical, with only Pathirana on the expensive side going for 20 runs in his two overs. For Blues it was Lahiru Udara, the wicketkeeper-batter opening the innings, skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Ashen Bandara – not for the first time this tournament – at No. 5, who managed to put up any sort of resistance, scoring 37, 25 and 40 respectively.Udara put on a 39-run stand with Dhananjaya following the early losses of Samarakoon and Samarawickrama. The partnership was just beginning to look threatening, with Dhananjaya in particular starting to find the boundaries, when he was stumped off Dunith Wellalage.Blues’ worries were compounded when Udara fell shortly after, but Bandara took over, tacking together a 42-run partnership with Janith Liyanage. Liyanage would account for just 12 of those runs, as Bandara took charge, striking four boundaries in his 30-ball effort.Bandara, the spritely 23-year-old, would remain unbeaten, striking a boundary in each of the final three overs of the innings, but a lack of support at the other end meant only one outcome was ever likely.

Everton make approach to sign "commanding" £12m player – reliable reporter

Everton have now made a move to sign a “commanding” £12 million player this month, according to a reliable journalist.

Everton transfer news

Given that the Friedkin Group have completed their takeover of the Toffees, there is hope among the supporters that January could be a busy month for them. Everton remain near the bottom end of the table, and Sean Dyche will hope funds becoming available will allow him to bring players in, and that will help them climb the Premier League table.

Everton keen on signing £7m+ defender to replace both Coleman and Young

This could be a much-needed upgrade.

1 ByHenry Jackson Jan 3, 2025

The Merseysiders have been linked with a move for Yunus Akgun recently, and he would be an exciting addition for Everton, as he’s scored five goals in six Europa League appearances this season. The Toffees are expected to “knock on Galatasaray’s door” this month and make an official offer. This is because one of the two positions that Everton are looking to strengthen is the wide area.

Yunus Akgun for Galatasaray.

The Premier League side are also looking to bring in a new right-back, and they are keen on signing Elias Jelert, who also plays for Galatasaray. The Toffees are keen to bolster this area of the team, as both Ashley Young and Seamus Coleman are not getting any younger, and they are keen to bring in a player for the future. The Turkish giants are willing to sell the player for around £7.4 million, so a move this month could happen if an offer arrives.

Everton make approach to sign "commanding" £12m player

As well as looking to sign a new right-back and winger, the Merseysiders are also looking to further strengthen their centre-back options, as according to reliable reporter Alan Nixon via Goodison News, Everton have made an approach to sign Juma Bah from Real Valladolid this month.

Juma Bah for Real Valladolid.

The 18-year-old joined the La Liga side on loan during the summer transfer window from AIK Freetong. Bah has impressed during his time at Valladolid, and he has now emerged on the radar of Everton, but a transfer doesn’t look as possible as the Toffees would have hoped for.

Nixon states that while Everton have made an approach to sign Bah, they would need to sell one of their defenders first before signing the 18-year-old. As well as Everton, Manchester City are also keen on landing the young defender, but Bah is against the idea of him being loaned out twice.

Therefore, given Everton and City’s situation, Inter Milan look set to complete the signing of Bah for around £12 million. If Everton are to beat Inter in the race to sign Bah, they will be hoping they can shift one of their current centre-backs on as quickly as possible.

Bah has been rather impressive since joining Valladolid, and after he played for the club’s B team earlier this season, football analyst Chencho Alonso labelled Bah “commanding”. He said: “He was commanding and pushing forward, showcasing solid defensive concepts in movement and marking adjustments. He is very calm on the ball and plays simply.

“The next day, I said he would be called up in September for the first team, and on Saturday he was a starter.”

Arsenal lead race to sign "world-class" £48m upgrade who’d make Saka better

With another impressive win in the bag last night, things are starting to look promising for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side are still seven points off league leaders Liverpool and behind Chelsea on goal difference, but they are looking incredibly dangerous and very much in this title race.

However, with two teams having scored more than them at the moment, there is room to improve in attack.

Fortunately, recent reports have linked the club with a sensationally gifted talent who could be an ideal upgrade on Gabriel Martinelli and help Bukayo Saka get even better.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Spain, Arsenal are one of several sides interested in signing Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams.

Alongside the Gunners, the report claims that Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are ‘leading the race from the Premier League’ while Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain are ‘keeping a close eye’ on developments.

While this level of competition is far from ideal, the good news is that the North Londoners won’t have to pay an arm and a leg to secure the wingers’ signature, as the report confirms the existence of a €58m release clause in his current contract, which converts to around £48m.

Spain'sNicoWilliamscelebrates scoring their sixth goal

It’s still a sizeable sum of money, and the transfer could be incredibly complicated to get over the line, but given Williams’ ability and potential to be an upgrade over Martinelli, it’s a transfer worth pursuing, especially as he could help Saka get even better.

Why Arsenal should sign Williams

So, before we look at how Williams’ arrival could help Saka, let’s look at how he compares to Martinelli, as being a leftwinger, the Brazilian would be his natural long-term rival at the Emirates.

Spain star Nico Williams

However, you wouldn’t think there’d be much of a rivalry at all when looking at their output from the start of last season, as to say the Spaniard blows the Gunners’ number 11 out of the water would be an understatement.

For example, in 56 appearances since the start of 23/24, the “world-class” dynamo, as dubbed by journalist Zach Lowy, has scored ten goals and provided 24 assists, which works out to an incredible average of a goal involvement every 1.64 games.

In contrast, the former Ituano gem has scored 12 goals and provided eight assists in 63 appearances across the same period, equating to a far less impressive average of a goal involvement every 3.15 games.

This stark difference in output would also help Saka reach another level for two reasons.

The first is the simple fact that he’d have a teammate who seemingly provides assists for fun, which in turn could see him take up even more of the goalscoring burden off the right and rival the likes of Mohamed Salah and Erling Haaland for the Golden Boot.

The second reason is that with the 22-year-old “level-raiser”, as dubbed by data analyst Ben Mattinson, playing off the left, the Hale End icon would have far more space to operate, as opposing defenders would no longer be able to double and triple up on him when there is another dynamic and incredibly dangerous winger on the other side of the pitch.

This change would also help the likes of Martin Odegaard and Kai Havertz for the same reasons and, therefore, potentially help the entire front line increase their already impressive level of output.

Ultimately, Arsenal are one of the most dangerous teams in the league, but by signing Williams, they could reach another level, both through his raw output and the space his presence would free up elsewhere on the pitch.

Therefore, the North Londoners must activate the Spaniard’s release clause before someone else beats them to it.
