Sheffield Wednesday keen on "lovely footballer" from Premier League academy

Sheffield Wednesday are considering signing a "lovely footballer" on loan in the summer transfer window, according to journalist Joe Crann.

Owls flying under Danny Rohl

The Owls seem to be the talk of the Championship currently, with Danny Rohl working wonders ever since taking charge as manager last season. The German kept his side in the league against all odds, and after lots of work on the training ground in the summer, they arguably look like one of the most exciting teams in the EFL.

Wednesday thumped Plymouth Argyle 4-0 in their Championship opener last weekend, prior to reaching the second round of the EFL Cup after a 2-1 win away to Hull City in midweek, so there is understandable positivity galore among the fanbase.

New signings have come in for Rohl since the end of last season, including Ike Ugbo, which feels like a significant piece of transfer business after his successful spell on loan at Hillsborough last term. At the other end of the pitch, goalkeeper James Beadle has again joined on loan from Brighton, while the likes of Olaf Kobacki and Yan Valery have also come in.

That's not to say that further new signings won't come in between now and the end of the summer transfer window, however, with Seagulls midfielder Malick Yalcouye linked with a move. It looks as though another talented youngster is also being targeted, according to a new update.

Sheffield Wednesday considering signing "lovely footballer"

Taking to X on Friday, the reliable Crann claimed that Sheffield Wednesday are considering making a move for Tottenham youngster Alfie Devine this summer, snapping him up on loan.

Devine could be such an exciting season-long addition for Wednesday, considering he is a young player currently at one of the biggest clubs in the country. He has even managed two appearances for Spurs, scoring once in that time, and his international pedigree at youth team level for England is exciting.

The attacking midfielder could bring added quality and depth to Rohl's squad, ahead of what will be a relentless Championship season across 46 matches, while former Plymouth manager Ian Foster lauded him during a loan spell there last season.

"People will really start to understand his qualities, how he can receive the ball in between the lines on the half turn and be positive. He’s a lovely footballer. I have worked an awful lot with Alfie, so I know what he’s capable of and we are starting to see it now."

Devine will surely be eager to enjoy another loan move away from Spurs in 2024/25, in order to get more regular football rather than warm the substitutes' bench or play for the youth team, so a move to Wednesday could suit everyone concerned.

Contact made: Nottingham Forest plot ambitious move for £29k-p/w forward

Nottingham Forest have been credited with making an ambitious move to sign a new striker this summer as Nuno Espírito Santo looks to bolster his ranks ahead of the upcoming Premier League campaign.

Nottingham Forest need goals

After securing Premier League survival on the final day of last season, Forest have been circumspect in their spending so far this summer by their recent standards. Moves for Elliot Anderson and Nikola Milenkovic have set the club back close to £50m, but they have been relatively frugal aside from that.

It means that they are still yet to address their goalscoring issue, with only Burnley, Everton and Sheffield United having scored fewer than the City Ground side last season, and that return bolstered by an amazing run of form by Chris Wood.

Taiwo Awoniyi is highly-rated across the top flight but has yet to be able to stretch together a run of games for the Reds in his two seasons at the club. The Nigerian managed just 12 Premier League starts in 2023/24, following on from his 17 starts in his debut campaign.

As a result, a striker is likely to be on their transfer wishlist between now and the end of the summer transfer window, with the window slamming shut on August 30th, two weeks into the new season.

Nottingham Forest make contact over ambitious move

Now, it has been reported that Forest have made contact over an audacious move for Mexican striker Santiago Gimenez. The 23-year-old forward wowed Eredivisie viewers last season as he hit 23 goals in 30 outings, a return which saw him linked with a move to the Premier League amid reported interest from the likes of Tottenham and Arsenal.

"Gimenez truly is fantastic," Feyenoord icon Mario Been claimed after one particularly strong performance. "He hadn't even touched the ball before his first goal, but that was a fantastic finish."

Feyenoord striker Santiago Gimenez

However, Arsenal's interest in the £29k per week ace has gone cold, while Tottenham are advancing over a deal to sign Dominic Solanke which would also rule them out of any race for the Feyenoord man.

That has allowed other clubs to pursue a deal, and journalist Martijn Krabbendam claims that Nottingham Forest have made a move to sign the Mexico forward.

“There is slight interest in Giménez, Nottingham Forest did call,” he explained, though he added that Gimenez may be looking at a bigger club were he to leave Feyenoord this summer.

“I cannot imagine that Giménez would like that, or the amount must be enormous. There is talk that he will and can still go. Giménez also has to be sold at some point."

A move for Gimenez, who is valued by transfermarkt at a massive £34m, would certainly be a statement of intent from Forest, who have already shown in Sangare that they are willing to splash out on talent from the Dutch top flight if they believe it to be a good deal.

'It's not done and dusted just yet!' – Roy Keane fires warning to Taylor Harwood-Bellis after watching future son-in-law score for England against Ireland

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Southampton centre-back Harwood Bellis came on in the second half of England's 5-0 victory over Ireland on Sunday night, and had a debut to remember, rounding off the scoring with a superb header in the 79th minute following a Jude Bellingham cross. Discussing the goal in the ITV studio afterwards, it was revealed that the defender is engaged to pundit Roy Keane's daughter Leah, and Keane in his typical gruff manner, jokingly warned Harwood-Bellis that the deal certainly isn't sealed with his daughter.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

A starting centre-back for Premier League strugglers Southampton, Harwood-Bellis has been relatively helpless as Southampton found themselves on the end of nine defeats in their first eleven league games of the season.

However, his determination and general ability across the board has not gone unnoticed by England interim coach Lee Carsley, and resulted in his first ever England call up for the international break.

Failing to take to the pitch in England's 3-0 win over Greece, the centre-back was finally given his Wembley moment with half an hour left against Ireland, with England already 3-0 up. West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen made it four with 15 minutes left, and just three minutes later, Harwood-Bellis netted what will likely be the most memorable goal of his life.

The goal hammered home a chastening result for Ireland, and Keane may have still been stinging from the score line, as his punchy one liner in the studio rode the line between funny and harsh perfectly.

    WHAT KEANE SAID

Speaking during the analysis of Harwood-Bellis' header, Keane said: "It's (the engagement) not done and dusted yet! Things can change very quickly in the Keane household, let me tell you."

However, Keane softened after his initial statement, saying: "It's good for him to make his debut, and he's a bit of a goal threat. He's a nice kid and his family have done a great job."

  • WHAT NEXT FOR HARWOOD-BELLIS?

Following his first goal at a senior international level, Harwood-Bellis will be buoyed upon his return to Southampton, and he may need to find a creative way of maintaining his high spirits, as the Saints take on a merciless Liverpool side in their first game back from the international break next weekend.

With England playing their final game of the year on Sunday night, the players now have four months until the next set of fixtures to focus on their club's campaign.

Arsenal chiefs believe they can sign "superstar" forward for £50 million

Arsenal chiefs are convinced they can sign a "superstar" forward for around £50 million this summer, as the north Londoners touch base with his representatives ahead of a potential formal move.

Arsenal also eyeing forward amid Riccardo Calafiori transfer talks

After announcing a permanent deal for goalkeeper David Raya in a £27 million move this week, sporting director Edu is attempting to get Bologna defender Riccardo Calafiori over the line for Mikel Arteta.

Fabrizio Romano says Arsenal have opened talks to sign "top quality" passer

They’re now in club-to-club negotiations after contacting the player.

Fabrizio Romano broke news late this week that Arsenal have now opened club-to-club talks over deal for Calafiori, and the reliable journalist has since confirmed that he's agreed personal terms on a five-year contract.

The young central defender impressed at Euro 2024 for Italy, playing a crucial role in their progression from the group stage, and was a sore miss for the Azzurri through suspension when they crashed out to Switzerland.

He'd be a very astute signing for Arteta, but as the Gunners attempt to strike a deal for Calafiori, they're also scouring the market for new attacking options. Arsenal want a right-winger who can alternate with Bukayo Saka, leading to their rumoured interest in Lille star Edon Zhegrova among others.

The England star scored 20 goals and registered 14 assists across 47 appearances in all competitions for them last season, but Arteta needs strength in depth if they're to challenge Man City for the Premier League title again and potentially go that one step further.

Arsenal were heavily linked with Wolves star Pedro Neto last year, and it is believed that the Portugal international remains on their radar in the club's search for new wide options. The Molineux forward crashed out of Euro 2024 on Friday night, after Portugal lost their quarter-final penalty shootout to France, so he'll now have more time to think about his future at Wolves.

Arsenal chiefs think they can strike £50 million deal for Pedro Neto

According to TEAMtalk, the Gunners have already reached out to his agency for discussions, with a host of other Premier League sides also monitoring his situation.

Pedro-Neto-Wolves

Wolves value their star forward at around £60 million, but Arsenal chiefs are convinced they can sign Neto for around £50 million, as are his other suitors. Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool have been keeping tabs on the former SC Braga star for the last two seasons, while Tottenham view him as an alternative to Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze.

The 24-year-old, despite injury problems, racked up 11 goal contributions in just 20 league appearances last term. Called a "superstar" by Jamie Carragher, Neto is a pivotal player for Wolves when fit and available, but his extensive injury record is also something to be wary of.

Aston Villa now leading the race to sign "massive" new £500,000 teenager

Aston Villa are reportedly leading the race to sign a potential future star in the making who has already been called "massive".

Aston Villa transfer news

The main focus of Aston Villa's transfer window so far has been on outgoings, as they look to comply with the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules before the end of the month. That potential punishment has already seen one youngster complete his exit, with Tim Iroegbunam swapping Villa Park for Everton in a deal worth a reported £9m, and now another young player is heading for the exit door.

According to reports, Chelsea have reached an agreement to sign Omari Kellyman from Aston Villa in a deal worth £19m this summer. And if those two departures weren't enough of a blow, Unai Emery is reportedly set to lose one of his best players in Douglas Luiz, who is set to join Serie A giants Juventus. Villa will at least receive Weston McKennie and Samuel Iling-Junior in return, but it remains to be seen whether they can ease their Luiz exit blow.

In between those frustrating departures, however, Villa and NSWE could be on their way to landing another incoming of their own alongside Ian Maatsen and Lewis Dobbin.

According to The Daily Mail, Aston Villa are leading the race to sign Harley Hunt from Swindon Town alongside Southampton. The 16-year-old defender can also play in midfield and has already made first-team appearances for the League Two side, who have set his price tag at £500,000 this summer.

Hunt is one for the future

As one future star leaves in the form of Kellyman, another may well be on his way this summer. And if the praise of Swindon Town's U18s manager Sean Wood is anything to go by, Hunt is certainly on course for stardom.

Wood told the club's official website via Total Swindon: “Fair play to him, he looks massive out there, doesn’t he? He doesn’t look out of place at all. It is brilliant to see, he is a great kid who wants to learn, but he still does have loads to learn. But it was two really good positive performances and two starts when he didn’t look out of place.

"He knows what he needs to improve on and we will continue to do that next year with whatever environment he is in and what staff he is working under. We will continue to work with him and support him on and off the pitch. He has got the right character and determination to kick on now, so that will hold him in good stead.”

At just 16 years old, those at Villa Park will have to be patient if Hunt does arrive this summer, with a place in the academy the most likely destination at this stage.

Great escape gives England chance to maintain formidable home record

Can Australia bounce back from their horror collapse when they had the series for the taking?

Andrew McGlashan15-Sep-2020Big PictureSomehow there is a decider to this series. That looked a very small chance when Australia needed 88 to win with eight wickets and 19 overs in hand two days ago. But as well as the middle order staged a recovery in the opening match there remains a vulnerability and England were able to seize on it, albeit on a tricky pitch that made their total of 231 more demanding that it may have appeared.A key factor for this final game – the last of an extraordinary men’s international season that will be completed amid the Covid-19 pandemic – is that it will be played on a fresh pitch, although it’s worth saying how superbly the two groundsmen at Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl have done to sustain the quality of surfaces over such a high turnover of matches.Who holds the advantage heading into this one? You would have to say England given the confidence boost of coming back from the brink on Sunday and an unbeaten home record that dates back to 2015 (when Australia were the last side to win a bilateral series in the country). However, perhaps due to the stop-start nature of the format since the World Cup, England have not quite hit their straps consistently in ODIs since then. For now, the top order has lost just a little of its aura – not that it would take much for it to return, and winning in different ways is certainly a good thing.Australia came into the tour having not played cricket for six months and perhaps a little lack of match hardness is partly to blame for their two defeats-from-the-jaws-of-victory performances in the first T20I and then the second ODI. However, particularly the way the collapse unfolded at breakneck speed two days ago will have been of concern. What they do have, though, is a very impressive pace attack with Josh Hazlewood outstanding in the two ODIs – conceded just 26 and 27 in 10 overs – while Adam Zampa is picking up wickets for fun. Bowling has never really been a massive concern for Australia; it’s the batting that continues to hold unanswered questions. Still, as shown in the opening match of the series, they are good enough to beat the world champions. Form guide(last five completed matches)
England LWLWW
Australia LWWLLIn the spotlightJos Buttler was outstanding in the two T20Is he played, taking the Man of the Series award despite being allowed to step away for the final match, but he has not been able to rekindle that feeling in the first two ODs with scores of 1 and 3 as Australia have made inroads into England’s middle order. He has had a magnificent season, all amid the challenges of being in the bubble almost from start to finish, so if his powers are waning a touch towards the end (his keeping is still good) then that would be understandable. However, the prospect of a series to win could just be the moment to bring a final flourish. With one innings to go, it has been another low-scoring tour of England for David Warner. After a half-century in the first T20I he has made three single-figure scores and been dismissed by his newest nemesis, Jofra Archer, in all four innings. As in the Ashes when he became a walking wicket for Stuart Broad he has received some superb deliveries from Archer, notably the two in the one-day series, but he will be keen not to finish another trip to these shores with the memory of him falling regularly to the same England pace bowler.Team newsThe Curran brothers had a big impact after replacing Moeen Ali and Mark Wood in the XI. It would be tough on either of them to miss out for the decider. It might hinge on whether Wood’s ankle niggle was anything more than needing a match off to rest amid a tight turnaround. If Moeen didn’t play on the previous pitch, it’s unlikely he’ll be recalled on a new one.England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Sam Billings, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, 9 Tom Curran, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Jofra ArcherThe key decision will be again around whether Steven Smith is able to return after the blow on the head before the opening game. He has passed all his concussion tests but a cautious approach has been taken so far, and Justin Langer says a late decision will be made. Despite the middle-order collapse it’s unlikely the selectors will be drawn into any knee-jerk decisions.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Marcus Stoinis/Steven Smith, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Mitchell Marsh, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodPitch and conditionsA new pitch offers the prospect of something more in favour of the batsmen, although Old Trafford is usually a good battle between bat and ball on any surface. The forecast is for another dry and bright autumn day, although there have been a few signs of dew being a factor at the very end of the game.Stats and Trivia Joe Root needs 38 runs to reach 6000; Aaron Finch needs 29 to reach 5000 and Glenn Maxwell 45 to reach 3000 Josh Hazlewood has conceded just 2.65 runs per over this series. Since 2010, the lowest economy rate for an Australia bowler to play at least three matches in a series and bowl at least 20 overs is Doug Bollinger’s 3.28 against Pakistan in 2009-10 Tom Curran’s 0 for 28 was the most economical wicketless 10-over spell by an England bowler since 2006Quotes”Jofra Archer’s an incredibly talented bowler. Equally, David Warner – what a player. I was looking over numbers last night and Davey’s record over the last little bit, I know when he gets in, he scores hundreds in one-day cricket. It’s been a great contest, some of these one-on-one match-ups, and often the fast bowler against the opening batter, that’s why we get up to watch the game. I’m sure Davey, he’s a superstar, he’s working overtime to be up for tomorrow night’s game.”
“I think we’ve earned that respect over a four- or five-year period. Teams do realise that we can potentially win from any position and the game is not done until they get over the line. We’ve got that character and belief that we can win from any position.”
Chris Woakes reflects on England’s ability to overturn the odds as a 50-over team.

Alongside Paqueta: Moyes must hand West Ham’s "superb" star his last start

West Ham United are at the end of an era. All the noise, the confusion, the uncertainty, the rigamarole… it's all coming to a close. David Moyes will lead the team out one last time and Julen Lopetegui will replace him during the summer.

The east London club are nailed on for a ninth-place Premier League finish and so will approach the ominous trip to the Etihad Stadium to face title-chasing Manchester City with a relieving sense of freedom.

West Ham manager David Moyes.

Pep Guardiola's team will win the championship if they defeat West Ham, so the visitors will be up against it as their indomitable opponents chase down an unprecedented four successive Premier League title.

West Ham team news

Kalvin Phillips has been out injured for the past two matches and still has a calf strain ahead of his final matchday as a West Ham loanee, though he is ineligible to play against his parent club anyway.

Centre-backs Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Aguerd could both return from respective injuries after missing West Ham's past four fixtures, but Moyes might consider handing Angelo Ogbonna one last starting berth as an Iron.

Why Moyes must start Angelo Ogbonna

Ogbonna is days away from his 36th birthday and is out of contract this summer, having completed 249 appearances ahead of what could be a fitting landmark to bow out to at 250 fixtures.

The veteran Italian defender recently spoke effusively about Moyes's impact on the Hammers outfit, calling it "a different club" that "became known around the world" following last year's stunning Europa Conference League triumph.

West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna.

With Aguerd unlikely to be fully fit on Sunday – if at all – it seems a suitable decision to unleash Ogbonna for the fifth successive Premier League fixture, given the star's left-footed preference.

West Ham have already finished ninth in the final standings. Their top-half finish is not in jeopardy, nor are they in contention to steal a last-gasp place in a European-qualifying spot.

Moyes might be urged to erect his sturdiest defensive axis against the indomitable Premier League giants but can he not muster up his poetic license at this final matchweek? Is Ogbonna not deserving of a curtain call after years of service that have led him to be regarded as a "superb" member of the Irons progress over the past years, as was said by The Athletic's Roshane Thomas last year?

Lucas Paqueta for West Ham.

Ogbonna is not the only star set to bow out, with Lucas Paqueta widely expected to leave the club this summer. Funnily, it is Man City that are the favourites to sign the Brazilian playmaker and bring him to the Etihad.

The creative phenom will be eager to put in a show on his unofficial audition and thus Moyes must play him from the outset, and while Ogbonna's situation edges more toward sentiment, he has put in some committed performances recently and will be confident that he can play his part.

And from an analytical, more pertinent perspective in regard to the football on the field, Ogbonna still boasts some of the quality that saw him ply his trade at the heart of the Hammers backline for so many years, completing 80% of his passes and winning 75% of his duels this season, as per Sofascore.

Moreover, he ranks among the top 12% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for blocks per 90, as per FBref, something that could be most important against the likes of Erling Haaland and Phil Foden.

Aguerd and Mavropanos have hardly proved themselves unerring titans at the back this season and Ogbonna must now be handed this final opportunity to put in a shift for the Hammers.

Offer submitted: Liverpool make approach for huge talent compared to Mbappe

Liverpool have submitted an offer for a hugely exciting player who has been compared to Paris Saint-Germain superstar Kylian Mbappe, according to a report from Brazil.

Liverpool transfer news

The Reds are about to experience a huge period of change at the club, with Jurgen Klopp now only having four matches remaining in charge as manager. It looks like Feyenoord boss Arne Slot could be the German's successor at Anfield, and he will no doubt be keen to bring in new players, working alongside CEO of Football Michael Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes.

Numerous players have been linked with moves to Liverpool in recent weeks, including Eintracht Frankfurt centre-back Willian Pacho, who has emerged as a strong option at the heart of the defence. The 22-year-old is a left-sided central defender, so could be viewed as Virgil van Dijk's long-term replacement.

Meanwhile, Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes is also seen as a potential transfer target for the Reds, being looked at as a possible partner for Alexis Mac Allister in the middle of the park. The Brazilian is weighing up his Magpies future currently, with a host of big clubs eyeing him up, including PSG, Barcelona and Manchester City.

Liverpool are also believed to have sent scouts to watch Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyokeres in action, with the Swede's magnificent form this season playing a big role in Ruben Amorim's side lying on the cusp of Primeira Liga glory. He has scored 24 goals in 29 league appearances in 2023/24 to date, outlining his relentless nature in the final third.

Liverpool submit offer for Mbappe-like ace

According to Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola [via Caught Offside], Liverpool have made an approach for Luis Guilherme, looking to snap up the Palmeiras ace at the end of the season.

Luis Guilherme for Palmeiras.

The Reds are thought to have offered €20m (£17.1m) for the services of the 18-year-old, although his current club are wanting something in the region of €50m (£42.8m) instead.

Long-term planning is essential at Liverpool, ensuring the current squad doesn't age together, and Guilherme could represent an eye-catching addition to the squad. He has been linked with a move to Anfield in the past, with one report claiming the Reds were in pole position to sign him, and it looks as though they remain keen following this update.

There is also the small matter of the teenage attacker being called the "next Kylian Mbappe", with the French superstar arguably one the world's greatest players at the moment, now that the best days of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have passed.

Liverpool could turn 3/10 flop into a 'generational star' by hiring Slot

It’s not just Darwin Nunez who could find a window of opportunity arise from the shifting cogs at Anfield this summer.

Apr 25, 2024

To be likened to such a world-renowned talent highlights the potential that Guilherme possesses, and he already has 38 appearances to his name for Palmeiras. Granted, he has only scored once in that time, showing what a raw talent he is, but Slot could turn him into a formidable figure over time, with his ceiling extremely high.
