Hampshire opener Michael Carberry marked his return to first-class cricket after being diagnosed with cancer by scoring a century against Cardiff MCCU at the Ageas Bowl.Carberry was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour last July and missed the second half of the season. He returned to training shortly before Christmas and was part of Hampshire’s pre-season tour to Barbados last month where he showed good form.On the first day against Cardiff he opened the batting, scoring 100 off 121 balls before falling to David O’Sullivan and was given a standing ovation as he walked off.Last week, Carberry issued a statement thanking people for their support and looking ahead to the season.”I would like to thank my family, the club, the supporters and my team-mates worldwide for all the kind messages of support and love through another very tough time in my career and life,” he said.”There is still a long way to go to being ‘recovered’ fully, but the outpour of support from the cricket family has helped massively in getting me back playing, and I’m looking forward to another great summer with Hampshire.”Carberry has played six Tests for England including all five on the 2013-14 Ashes tour where he was England’s second-highest run-scorer behind Kevin Pietersen.

Tottenham: Spurs Set To Pay Asking Price For Star

Tottenham Hotspur have "decided to pay the desired amount" for Galatasary defender Victor Nelsson this summer and he is "preparing" to leave.

Who are Spurs signing?

The Lilywhites and new manager Ange Postecoglou have already been boosted by a few arrivals this summer with Spurs' squad overhaul well underway.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario has joined from Empoli in a deal worth £17.2 million, while the north Londoners also struck a £40 million agreement with Leicester City to sign star playmaker James Maddison.

Speaking after their arrivals, Postecoglou heaped praise on both players, not just for their obvious ability, but also their character as individuals.

“It’s not just about the talent they bring as footballers," explained Postecoglou.

It’s what they bring as people as well because we are going to play football that requires a certain type of personality and character.

“Both those guys have got it in abundance. I could hear it in their voices when I spoke to them. I had a couple of chats with both of them before we signed them and I knew that they were the right types to bring into the dressing room."

Vicario and Maddison join the likes of Dejan Kulusevski, who signed on a permanent deal from Juventus at the start of the window, and winger Manor Solomon who is putting pen to paper on his move to Spurs today.

The Israeli international could well be joined by a star centre-back, with Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven, Edmond Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen, Fulham's Tosin Adarabioyo and Barcelona's Clement Lenglet all in the frame.

Another defender to have been linked with a Spurs move is Nelsson, and according to a report from Turkey, a transfer is edging closer after a big decision.

victor-nelsson-tottenham-transfer-news-opinion-premier-league

Turkish news site Aksam claim the Denmark international is "preparing" to open himself up to Europe and is almost certain to leave Galatasary this window.

Spurs, Napoli, Arsenal and Atalanta have been targeting Nelsson, but it's Tottenham who are seemingly in pole position.

Club chiefs, after seeing a bid of £19 million rejected, have now "decided to pay the desired amount" for Galatasary's "star player".

The Super Lig apparently requested around £21 million to sell their prized asset, a fee which Tottenham have opted to agree too. This is listed as a record price for any Galatasary player, so if Spurs do in fact pay the full asking price, he will leave the club for the "highest transfer fee".

Tottenham are named as the most serious suitor for Nelsson as a result, but amid their links to van de Ven, it will be interesting to see if both the Dutchman and Dane come to north London together.

Who is Victor Nelsson?

He's been a star defender and undroppable for Galatasary, especially last season, with his numbers reflecting that of an assured and composed centre-back.

Nelsson is yet to ply his trade in a top European division, but the player's importance to Galatasary is highlighted by the fact he featured more than any other outfielder for them last campaign (WhoScored).

The ex-FC Copenhagen star won more aerial duels per 90 and made more blocks per match than any of his teammates over 2022/2023 – emphasizing why Tottenham have allegedly decided to pay his exit clause (WhoScored).

KSCA set to boycott BCCI awards, Pataudi Lecture

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which will host the second Test between India and Australia starting Saturday, has told the BCCI that it will boycott the MAK Pataudi Memorial Lecture and the annual BCCI awards to be held on March 8 in Bengaluru. ESPNcricinfo understands there is also a danger of other state associations following suit in protest. In an e-mail sent last week, BCCI chief executive Rahul Johri had invited state associations for the fifth Pataudi Lecture, to be delivered by former India wicketkeeper Farokh Engineer, and the board’s annual awards with the last paragraph saying: “Kindly note that the committee of administrators is constrained to convey that only those office bearers who are qualified as per the Supreme Court orders are expected to attend the function.”The KSCA, in a reply dated March 3, said it would not even “remotely think” of attending the function, to be held on the last scheduled evening of the second Test. The KSCA further said it would be a “humiliation to the very cricketing fraternity” to accept the invitation with constraints and restrictions, and also accused the Supreme Court-appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA) of showing “prejudice” against “various people who have served the game of cricket over decades”. The two-page e-mail, accessed by ESPNcricinfo, was signed by KSCA’s current president Sanjay Desai and secretary K Sudhakar.Although the KSCA is the first state association to lodge the protest, many other BCCI members may not attend the March 8 event. “Though courtesy demands and it is customary to thank you for the subject invitation, it is unfortunate that we do not intend to even acknowledge leave alone, thank you for the invite,” the KSCA’s e-mail said. “It may seem very rude and un-diplomatic, however, looking at the last paragraph of your invitation, constraining you from certain acts, we would like to also ascertain that we are also constrained not to acknowledge, thank or even remotely think of attending this function.”This is the second time in three days that the CoA has come in for strong criticism from the state associations. On Thursday, many state associations, barring Vidarbha and Tripura, sent the CoA separate e-mails saying they would not comply with its directives till they got clarification from the Supreme Court on aspects like eligibility of an office bearer. They also told the CoA that they were “alarmed” it was “overstepping” the role defined by the court. Two days later, the KSCA adopted the same blunt tone. “The fact [is] that the Committee of Administrators who have blatantly overstepped their roles far overreaching the direction of the Supreme Court do not understand the very meaning of an annual awards function pertaining to Cricket and an invitation to the same.”Administrators and Cricketers who have contributed their time and energy and also have sacrificed immensely for the development of game over decades are being treated so shabbily by the Committee of Administrators as though all of them are of doubtful integrity.”According to Desai and Sudhakar, the KSCA was one of the most “transparent” and “well run associations” in the country. They stated that many Karnataka players had achieved the distinction of being a cricketer of “impeccable character” because “the same has been inculcated” in the KSCA. “Under these circumstances, if in the wisdom of the Committee of Administrators, they feel that people who have contributed over decades are not worthy of attending a cricketing award function, then it demonstrates the prejudice they are carrying in this matter about the various people who have served the game of cricket over decades.”They concluded the e-mail by saying: “Debarring personnel who have contributed immensely over decades from being part of a cricketing function of the BCCI which has been built brick by brick by the sweat and sacrifice of these personalities in our view is an absolute aberration on the wisdom of the learned Committee of Administrators.”

Deal Close: Liverpool Set For Fresh Takeover Investment

There is still very likely to be new takeover investment in Liverpool, according to a report from reliable finance journalist Alex Miller, who states that a deal is expected to happen this summer.

Will FSG sell Liverpool?

The Reds are currently owned by FSG, or Fenway Sports Group to give them their full title. They're led by John W. Henry, who has been a key figure at the club since initially coming into power back in 2010. It means that the group have now been at the helm for 13 years – and as the years have drawn on, it's become more and more tumultuous for the owners at Anfield despite some great success on the pitch.

When Henry was revealed as one of the key figures behind the proposed European 'Super League' back in 2021, it led to outcry from fans. The idea was wholly opposed and one by one, the clubs began to drop out of the running in that venture. It led to an apology from Liverpool's owner, who grovelled for the "disruption" to the side.

Since then, FSG have decided to offer Liverpool to potential buyers, with the club put up for sale back in 2022. There has yet to be any new ownership deals agreed and Henry's consortium remain in charge at Anfield however, while for the past few months talk of new money coming in has died down. A recent report suggested that there was no interest in buying out FSG and that means, for now, they'll keep hold of the reins at the Premier League outfit.

However, a new claim from journalist Alex Miller today though has revealed that fresh investment in the club is potentially still on the cards. He stated that a deal to give the club a boost is "expected" be done "over the summer" and added that there are a multitude of options for the side to consider when it comes to finding this new investment.

Miller said: "Re LFC investment. Well-placed sources maintain that several investment options remain on the table for the club… and that a deal is expected to be completed "over the summer"…"

Who could Liverpool sign this summer?

If there was indeed fresh investment, that could potentially mean more money for transfers, and that would be a welcome boost for Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds have been tailing players such as Ryan Gravenberch, Khephren Thuram and Levi Colwill to name just a few, and fresh funds could help them land some of their targets.

No deal has been confirmed just yet, but it does appear that a move could potentially happen this summer and hopefully boost the transfer coffers for Klopp and new sporting chief Jorg Schmadtke.

Taylor's 51-ball 90 studs six-wicket win

Stafanie Taylor dominated West Indies’ chase of 151, slamming 90 off 51 balls to take them to 154 for 4 in 19.1 overs and a six-wicket win in the first T20 international against India Women in Mulapadu. Taylor slapped 12 fours and three sixes and scored over 58 percent of West Indies’ runs. That, after India Women put up 150 for 4, with Harmanpreet Kaur justifying her decision to make first use of the surface with an unbeaten 68, and Veda Krishnamurthy scoring an even 50.Taylor began by playing second fiddle to Hayley Matthews in a brisk opening stand of 31 in four overs. After Matthews’ dismissal for 18, Taylor took charge of proceedings, dominating partnerships of 40 for the second wicket with Britney Cooper (16) and wicketkeeper Merissa Aguilleira, with whom she added 70 for the third wicket. When Aguilleira fell, three balls after Taylor, she had scored just 15. It was Shikha Pandey, the right-arm medium pacer, who dismissed both batsmen, but by then, West Indies were left with just nine to get off 13 balls, and Deandra Dottin and Kycia Knight saw them home with five balls remaining. Pandey finished with 3 for 31 in four overs, while Preeti Bose, the offspinner, took the other wicket, having Cooper stumped.West Indies could have been chasing much lesser after having reduced India to 28 for 2 in the sixth over with their new-ball duo of Shakera Selman and Dottin sending back both the openers. Krishnamurthy and Kaur repaired the damage with a third-wicket partnership of 88 off 69 balls. Krishnamurthy fell for 50 off 46 balls, but Kaur stayed till the end to lift the total. Kaur played a more brisk 68 off 50 balls with the help of six fours and three sixes.Selman and Dottin were both economical and took three wickets between them. Matthews, though wicketless, kept India quiet, giving away just 14 runs in four overs. The second match takes place on Sunday, before the series concludes on Tuesday. Both matches take place at the same venue.

Arsenal Must Reignite Interest In £35m Whiz

Edu Gaspar will be hoping to bolster Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal squad during the summer transfer window, especially with the club qualifying for the Champions League due to their second place finish in the Premier League.

There will be a big jump in quality and signing players who could not only add depth to the Arsenal side, but who could also improve the starting XI, will be deemed a priority ahead of 2023/2024.

With this in mind, Arteta must surely reignite his interest in Bayern Munich forward Serge Gnabry, especially with the recent developments to emerge from Germany.

According to German outlet Sport BILD (via football.london), the Bavarian giants have placed Gnabry, as well as Sadio Mane and Leroy Sané, up for sale as they look to rejig their attack ahead of next season.

The Gunners were linked with the player last summer, however, he signed an extension to his contract at the Bundesliga side and all hopes of a potential move were quashed. The recent news however could certainly give Arteta the green light to have a second bite of the cherry.

At the time, Bayern Munich were reportedly asking for a fee in the region of €40m (£35m) and it remains to be seen if that number has budged over the past year.

Would Serge Gnabry be a good signing for Arsenal?

Since joining Bayern in 2018, the former Hale End talent has offered a reliable goal threat, netting 81 goals and registering 51 assists in just over 200 matches, an excellent return, while he has also won five league titles along with a Champions League title, meaning he could bring an elite winning mentality to the Gunners, who are certainly on the cusp of glory.

The German whiz is valued at €47.4m (£41m) by Football Transfers and Arteta could form a scary attacking duo with him and Bukayo Saka next term if he managed to lure him back to the Emirates, where he spent six years during the early stages of his career.

The England international notched 11 assists from 38 league matches last season, and he ranks in the top 10% across Europe’s top five leagues for progressive carries per 90 (5.04) and touches in the attacking penalty area per 90 (6.75), suggesting he gets into key attacking positions often and this could present Gnabry with plenty of goal scoring chances throughout the season.

serge-gnabry-arsenal-transfer-arsene-wenger-robin-van-persie

The Arsenal winger also ranked fourth for assists and eighth for key passes per game (two) in the Premier League, further demonstrating his attacking qualities in a wide position and there is no doubt Gnabry could thrive by having a player of Saka’s quality bursting down the right wing and into the box on a regular occurrence.

The 27-year-old was described as someone who “has everything” by former Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic and if Arteta can sign him this summer, they would certainly bolster their attacking options that’s for sure.

Thinking right, execution wrong – Dhoni

India captain MS Dhoni said he had guessed correctly that the final delivery from Dwayne Bravo would be a slower ball but his execution of the shot let him down

Happy with how we bowled in last eight overs – Dhoni

India captain MS Dhoni said he had guessed correctly that the final delivery from Dwayne Bravo would be a slower ball but his execution of the shot let him down. With two runs needed off one ball, Dhoni was caught at short third man and West Indies won the first T20 international by the narrowest of margins.Dhoni said his team should be commended for their valiant chase in the highest-scoring T20 game ever. “I feel there were plenty of positives in this game because the way we chased down 245 runs, apart from the last ball,” he said after the match. “I felt we were totally in the game. Even the last ball, the thinking was right, the execution was wrong.”A cat-and-mouse game that had been developing over the course of the final six balls reached a new level as Bravo engaged in several discussions, stalling for several minutes ahead of the last ball, with two required by Dhoni to secure what would have been a record chase. Even though Dhoni said he knew what was going to be sent down, he praised Bravo’s skills in such a pressure moment.”When it comes to Bravo, I feel in the current scenario he’s among the best when it comes to the death bowling,” Dhoni said. “The amount of experience that he has really counts so you always know if he’s bowling it’s tough. What then becomes important is how we’re executing.”You have to really guess what he’s looking to bowl and according to that you play your shots. So if you guess the bowler well and execute well, you’ll end up winning. Rather than thinking who is bowling, what’s important is to think what his strength is and where he’ll look to pitch the next delivery.”Despite India conceding the third highest total in a T20I, Dhoni praised his bowlers for their effort to reel West Indies back in after Johnson Charles and Evin Lewis added 126 for the first wicket in 9.3 overs. By the end of the 11th over – a 32-run sequence in which Lewis struck the first five legal deliveries from Stuart Binny for six before mis-hitting a full toss – West Indies were 164 for 1.Dhoni said he thought West Indies were on track for 270 or more before R Ashwin started to shift momentum with a four-run 12th over, bowling with the breeze at his back. The wind from the pavilion end helped the spinners throughout the rest of the innings, and Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja conceded just 18 runs in the 12th, 14th and 16th overs. India’s pace bowlers also began nailing their yorkers and the result was just 40 runs off the final four overs to keep West Indies to 245.MS Dhoni said his bowlers did well to pull West Indies back to 245, after they had looked like getting 270•BCCI”I felt the way the boys performed overall was very good,” Dhoni said. “I was very happy how we brought the opposition down when it came to the last eight overs. That really matters because that is something where we have struggled quite consistently but it was a good exposure to our bowlers and they finished up well to restrict them to 245.”Dhoni also praised the batting efforts of KL Rahul, who struck his maiden T20I century in just his fourth match. Rahul ended 110 not out off 51 balls, having missed the fastest T20I ton by two deliveries, taking 46 balls to reach three figures.”He has been very consistent,” Dhoni said. “I feel that is a strength of Rahul also, compact player but at the same time unorthodox shots. He plays all over the ground, over covers, mid off, mid on. So a complete cricketer. Of course there’s a long way to go for him but the way he has played in the last six months, it’s very encouraging to see him bat.”As for the experience of playing in Florida in front of a heavily partisan Indian diaspora, Dhoni joked that “even if we’re playing in Bermuda Triangle, they’ll be there”. He also praised the efforts put in by the groundstaff at the Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill.”The facility is as good as anywhere else,” Dhoni said. “The ground itself is up to international standard. You can’t score 500 runs on a bad wicket, so fantastic wicket. The practice wickets were fantastic. When it comes to the stadium, it’s not a big stadium. The moment I say stadium I mean the number of fans it can house. I think it’s close to 15,000. So overall looking at everything as a complete package, I think it was fantastic. We had fun.”When it comes to the Indian fans, it’s a pleasure playing in front of them. They follow us everywhere wherever we are playing. So it’s a first time we are playing in the USA but not to forget we have a big Indian community out here so thanks to them for coming and watching the game.”

Liverpool Have "Very Genuine" Interest In £80k p/w Ace

Liverpool have a 'very genuine' interest in Chelsea midfielder Mason Mount heading into this summer, according to journalist Ben Jacobs.

What's the latest transfer news involving Mason Mount?

As per Football Insider, Liverpool and Arsenal are set to go toe-to-toe in an attempt to try and entice Mount away from Stamford Bridge in the forthcoming transfer window.

The report states that Mount wants to be among the highest earners at Chelsea, which has proved to be a roadblock in contract negotiations, sparking both Liverpool and Arsenal into life as they look to strengthen their respective midfield departments. Bayern Munich are also said to be keen to offer the 24-year-old a new challenge.

Mount is believed to be interested in moving to Bayern Munich in the off-season and the German giants may hold a significant card in their pursuit as they are managed by former Blues manager Thomas Tuchel, as per The Guardian.

With his £80k-a-week deal in west London set to expire in 2024, Chelsea are fearful that they may have to cash in on Mount sooner rather than later unless progress can be made regarding potential fresh terms.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jacobs thinks that Liverpool hold a 'strong' level of interest in Mount and will be at the front of the queue to try and sign him this summer.

Jacobs said: "From Liverpool's perspective, they see a real window of opportunity; the interest is very genuine and relatively strong and they also have to understand what Chelsea are going to counter with and whether or not Mount truly wants to leave the football club.

"Then you've got to factor in a new manager into all of this and also consider other outgoings because Mount will want to understand, by the time the first game of next season comes around, who else is going to be there in his position? How much competition will [there be] and what role does the new manager think that he has to play at the football club."

Would Mason Mount be a good signing for Liverpool?

Mount is a player who could be set to enter his prime in the not-too-distant future and would add another dimension to Liverpool's midfield if Jurgen Klopp could sanction a deal for him this summer.

In 2022/23, the 24-year-old – hailed a "superstar" previously by journalist Rob Guest – has made 35 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, registering three goals and assists, as per Transfermarkt.

chelsea-mason-mount-man-united-transfers

Despite Chelsea's poor form this term, Mount has still provided a regular supply of chances, successfully performing 83 shot-creating actions in his time on the pitch, as shown on FBRef.

With Liverpool known to want to add midfield reinforcements in the off-season, Mount could definitely freshen up the Reds' engine room heading into 2023/24.

Southampton Team News: "Phenomenon" Available Vs Bournemouth

Southampton striker Che Adams will be “available” for the Premier League game against Bournemouth tonight, according to Ruben Selles.

What's the latest injury news on Adams?

The St Mary’s outfit secured a 3-3 draw against Arsenal during their last game so will be heading into this evening’s home fixture full of confidence that they can gain a result following a much-improved performance at the Emirates Stadium.

Scotland international Adams, however, hasn’t featured in the top flight since the draw against Tottenham Hotspur on 18th March, having sustained a calf injury during international duty last month, where he was forced off the pitch after 58 minutes against Cyprus. The Saints boss had revealed that he was expecting the 26-year-old to be targeting a return at the end of April, and it sounds like his timeframe was spot on.

Speaking during his Wednesday pre-match press conference, Selles confirmed that Adams is firmly in contention to face the Cherries after returning to training, whilst also providing an update on four other players.

As quoted by Southampton’s official website, he said: “We have Juan Larios, Mohammed Salisu and Tino Livramento who are not selectable. Che Adams is selectable and available for the game tomorrow. We have Jan Bednarek who has followed concussion protocol and that will end tonight at midnight, tomorrow we’ll re-evaluate him.”

Southampton striker Che Adams.

Will Adams returning be a positive for Southampton?

Southampton have had an extremely disappointing season, but Adams has been one of the standout stars, ranking as Selles’ second-best-performing offensive player, so it will be a huge boost for the boss to have him at his disposal once again.

The Unique Sports Group client has posted 13 goal contributions (ten goals and three assists) in 32 appearances across all competitions this season, with a similar vein of prolific form having seen him previously lauded a “phenomenon” by ex-manager Ralph Hasenhuttl.

The £30k-per-week forward has also recorded 42 shots since the start of the term which is higher than any other member of the squad, and 54 shot-creating actions, placing him second behind captain James Ward-Prowse, as per FBref.

Finally, Adams provides Selles with wonderful versatility with his ability to operate out wide on both flanks, as a second striker and in attacking midfield alongside his natural centre-forward role so the chances of the Saints picking up all three points against the Cherries will only increase with the striker leading the line.
