Afif Hossain steers the chase as Bangladesh 2-0 up

Mustafizur Rahman had earlier played a key role in keeping Australia to just 121 for 7

Andrew McGlashan04-Aug-2021You wait years for a T20 victory over Australia then two come along at once. Bangladesh stumbled but eventually found composure in their chase to take a 2-0 lead in Dhaka with Afif Hossain and Nurul Hasan guiding them home with eight balls to spare. The pitch – a new one – was again slow, although looked rather less slow when Mitchell Starc was racing in with the new ball after Australia’s batting had laboured to post 121, in which Mustafizur Rahman was outstanding. At 67 for 5 the chase was wobbling significantly but with such a small target, the required rate was never an issue and the sixth-wicket pair managed to show a calmness that had eluded a few others. After struggling in the Powerplay, Australia had given themselves a foundation to launch in the closing overs with a stand of 57 between Mitchell Marsh and Moises Henriques, and with a fair wind 140 would have been achievable. However, the innings almost went into reverse after Shakib Al Hasan removed Henriques, and when Marsh edged behind it meant there wasn’t a set batter for the final push. The last five overs brought 31 for 4.Mustafizur’s fizz
If you want an in-depth look at the story of Mustafizur’s career then read this. Suffice to say this was the type of performance that made his name. His 3 for 23 were his best figures in T20Is since 2017 and the third best of his career. Effectively a fast spinner most of the time, Australia’s batters had all sorts of problems facing his brisk cutters that gripped on the surface. He completely befuddled Josh Philippe with a short delivery that held in the surface and dipped slowly under the bat, so much so that Philippe could almost turn and watch it take leg stump. It was wonderful deception. Later in the innings he knocked back Matthew Wade’s leg stump then found himself on a hat-trick when the next delivery spat at Ashton Agar and took the glove. It was Bangladesh’s two left-arm seamers who did most of the damage as Mustafizur and Shoriful Islam claimed 5 for 50 between them.Mahedi’s charmed life
At one point during the chase, the camera picked out a cat roaming around the empty stands. It is arguable whether it or Mahedi Hasan had more lives. At times there was a rather frenetic nature to Bangladesh’s chase, not least when Mahedi kept lofting deliveries tantalisingly out of reach of Australia’s fielders. On at least four occasions he evaded fielders, although when he did middle one off Adam Zampa it went a long way back into the stands. When he fell, missing a wild charge at Zampa, it was the third wicket for nine runs in three overs as Australia pressed hard. That had included the key duo of Shakib, playing across the line to Andrew Tye, and captain Mahmudullah dragging on against Agar.Closing it out
Afif had provided some late impetus in yesterday’s match with the highest strike-rate among Bangladesh’s batters, but this was an even better innings. There had been some doubt as to whether there would be DRS for this series and Afif was left grateful there was when he was given lbw to Marsh on 1 only for replays to show it pitched outside leg. In the 13th over he took advantage of a seventh delivery from Tye to clear the leg side for six, and bring the requirement back under a run-a-ball, although he saved his best for a sublime cover drive off Starc. Nurul played a vital hand and victory then rushed into view as Afif hit three boundaries in seven balls.

Ange personally wants Spurs to sign 6 ft 2 striker to partner Solanke

Already looking to strengthen his attacking options in 2025, Ange Postecoglou now reportedly personally wants Tottenham Hotspur to sign one particular physical presence to partner Dominic Solanke up front.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites have started the season in inconsistent fashion on the results front, with one win, one draw and one loss summing up their difficulties. But the performances have been promising at times and the return of summer signing Solanke back from injury should at least provide Spurs with a welcome boost in North London.

Of course, up next is one of the biggest games of the Premier League calendar in the form of the North London derby. Spurs host an Arsenal side who enter proceedings with plenty of injury concerns, including club captain Martin Odegaard, in what is the perfect opportunity for the Lilywhites to bounce back from Newcastle United defeat in perfect fashion.

They’ve had injury concerns of their own, however. As mentioned, Solanke has been missing since the opening day and Spurs, as a result, have had their lack of attack depth exposed in a problem they’re already eyeing a solution for.

Where does Ange Postecoglou rank among Tottenham’s best managers?

ByMark Marston Jun 1, 2024

According to reports in Spain, Postecoglou now personally wants to sign Dominic Calvert-Lewin as a physical presence next to Solanke in his starting Spurs side. Calvert-Lewin – standing at 6 foot 2 and scoring another header on Saturday against Aston Villa – would certainly provide exactly that alongside crucial Premier League experience.

What’s more, the fact that the Everton forward will be out of contract next summer makes the deal one that Spurs would be wise to pursue, should they be given the opportunity. Even if the Englishman hasn’t been at his best in the last two seasons at Goodison Park, just having such a different option to partner and back Solanke up may well prove to make all the difference for Postecoglou and his side.

"Outstanding" Calvert-Lewin can partner Solanke

If Spurs sign Calvert-Lewin and get him back to his best then they’ll suddenly have two Premier League strikers capable of scoring double figures in goals a season. And in pursuit of a top four place, that would quickly prove to be crucial for Postecoglou.

Sean Dyche will be frustrated to see his forward leave if he does depart, however, having been full of praise for Calvert-Lewin last season, telling BBC Sport “I thought he was excellent. His physical performance was outstanding.

“I said to him after the match, ‘That is the sort of performance that gets you back around the England squad’. It is too early yet and I am not making any bold statement because Gareth Southgate has a lot of players to choose from, but certainly with that kind of performance he should be recognised as a top centre forward.”

The fact that it would likely be a free deal too, means that Spurs would not be running a great risk by signing Calvert-Lewin. All signs point towards a deal that the Lilywhites would be wise to pursue next summer, especially if Postecoglou does want a physical presence to partner big-money signing Solanke in North London.

The Pilgrims' winless run extended to six games in the Championship as they went down 2-0 against the league leaders at Bramall Lane. Gustavo Hamer and Kieffer Moore were on target as United extended their lead to three points over Leeds United at the top of the table. Plymouth, on the other hand, remain 23rd in the table, one point above rock-bottom Hull City.

Amid speculations over manager Rooney's future at Home Park, the Manchester United legend expressed his frustration after another defeat, claiming his team did not deserve to lose the clash. He also praised his players for having control for a large part of the match.

WHAT WAYNE ROONEY SAID

Speaking to reporters after the match, the 39-year-old said: "We are disappointed with the result. I didn't feel we deserved to lose the game but that's what Sheffield United are, they are a very efficient team, good in both boxes, and that's what they have done again today.

"I thought a lot of our play was good. We controlled the game for large portions of it and then missed opportunities where I feel we can do a little bit better. Performance-wise was good but the result very disappointing."

He added: "It was a better performance, I think that's clear for everyone to see. I thought it was a really good reaction to going a goal down. I felt as the game was going on we could potentially get something out of it, and then it opened up a little bit towards the end and Sheffield United broke and got a penalty, and then the game was done then really. From our point of view I think there were lots of positives for us to look at but also things for us to improve on. I always talk to the players about details – passing it to the right foot, what type of cross you put into the box, little things like that. If we can do that, we will be okay."

Watch out Omorodion: Chelsea want PL ace who’s a bigger talent than Solanke

A new centre-forward has been top of Chelsea’s shopping list so far this summer, as new boss Enzo Maresca looks to further strengthen his forward line ahead of his debut campaign in charge of the club.

Nicolas Jackson is the Blues’ current senior option at the top end of the pitch, with the Senegalese forward managing to score 14 goals in his first campaign at Stamford Bridge last season.

However, Samuel Omorodion appears to be edging closer to a £35m move to West London, with journalist Fabrizio Romano confirming the Blues had agreed a deal with Atletico Madrid to sign the youngster.

Despite the potential arrival, Maresca’s side could yet go after another central striker, as rumours around a move for Victor Osimhen refuse to go away.

One other player has been touted with a move to the club ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, amid rumours of a move to a fellow Premier League side before the closure of the window in a couple of weeks.

Chelsea still want £50m ace this summer

According to the Daily Star, Chelsea are in the race to sign Brighton and Hove Albion striker Evan Ferguson before the transfer deadline on August 30th.

Brighton strikerEvan Ferguson.

They face tough competition from Manchester United for the 19-year-old’s signature, despite the Red Devils already splashing £36.5m on Dutch international Joshua Zirkzee.

The Irish international scored six goals in his 27 Premier League appearances last season, including a stunning hat-trick against Newcastle United in the opening weeks of the campaign.

The report states Erik ten Hag’s side are preparing a £50m offer for the youngster, but are worried about the Blues potentially jumping them in the race for his services.

Ferguson would be an excellent addition to Maresca’s side, proving to be a better talent than one player who’s also been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge during the off-season.

Why Ferguson is a bigger talent than Solanke

Chelsea may regret allowing striker Dominic Solanke to leave after his 19-goal season in the Premier League at Bournemouth last season – the best of his professional career.

He left the Blues back in 2017 for Liverpool, before a stint at Bournemouth – leading to his recent £65m move to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite his recent goalscoring exploits and his big-money transfer, the club would be signing a bigger talent than the Englishman with a move for Ferguson.

The young "superstar" – as described by pundit Danny Murphy – may have scored fewer goals than Solanke last season, but he achieved a tally of 61% of his efforts on target, compared to the Cherries forward, who could only manage 33%.

He also managed a higher pass accuracy, making him a great fit for Maresca’s possession-based system, whilst also completing more take-ons, showcasing his ability to create carnage in the final third.

Whilst a deal for Omorodion may be getting closer by the day, a deal for Ferguson would see them sign a player younger than the Spaniard but with more pedigree in England’s top flight – a crucial asset if the Blues are to be successful this season.

It may prove to be another huge sum of money splashed on a young prospect, but in his short professional career, he’s shown he has what it takes to make an immediate impact at Stamford Bridge.

Dream Olmo alternative: Man City could land £60m England star

The 2024 European Championship tournament came to a close on Sunday night and one of Manchester City's players ended the day with a trophy in his hand.

Rodri was one of the Spain players to be part of the trophy-lift in Berlin after his side beat England, who had John Stones, Kyle Walker, and Phil Foden in their starting XI, 2-1.

Another player from the champions of the competition has been linked with a move to The Etihad this summer, as the Cityzens are reportedly interested in RB Leipzig's Dani Olmo.

Fabrizio Romano reported that there is a release clause in his current contract that would allow any team to snap him up for €60m (£50m), but it expires on the 20th July and that deadline could spark a race to secure his services.

The Italian reporter added, however, that there have not been any talks with Manchester City and that the other teams are interested in the Spanish star.

This means that the Cityzens could be exploring alternative options to him in an attacking midfield role, despite his impressive form for club and country.

Dani Olmo's impressive form

Firstly, the 26-year-old midfielder enjoyed a solid season in the Bundesliga in Germany with RB Leipzig before joining up with Spain for the Euros.

The right-footed ace produced four goals and five assists in 21 appearances in the division, creating eight 'big chances' along the way, as he showcased his attacking quality at the top end of the pitch.

He ranked within the top 6% of attacking midfielders and wingers in the league for Expected Assisted Goals per 90 (0.34) and the top 21% for assists per 90 (0.31).

This shows that Olmo consistently created high-quality chances for his teammates to find the back of the net in the Bundesliga across his 21 outings, and could, therefore, provide a fantastic supply to Erling Haaland at City.

The Spanish ace then enjoyed a superb time at the Euros this summer as he helped his country to win the tournament, beating England in the final on Sunday.

As you can see in the table above, Olmo stepped up with a staggering five direct goal contributions in just three starts in Germany over the last few weeks.

He scored the winning goal in the semi-final against France and produced a goal and an assist in Spain's 2-1 win over Germany in the quarter-final.

This shows that the attacking midfielder played an integral role in his country's success in the tournament as they may have been knocked out in the previous two rounds before the final without his contributions in the final third.

His statistics at club and international show that City have an unknown level of interest in a player who could add more attacking quality to Pep Guardiola's ranks in the middle of the park.

However, the Cityzens could land a dream alternative to Olmo, given that they are not currently in talks to pursue a deal for him, by swooping for a Premier League star.

Man City's interest in Premier League magician

Earlier this month, The Sun reported that Manchester City are one of the clubs interested in a potential deal to sign attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace.

The outlet claimed that the Premier League champions and Ange Postecoglou's Tottenham Hotspur are both eyeing up a swoop for the England international.

It also added that the former Queens Park Rangers magician has a release clause in his current contract with the Eagles that would allow him to move on for a fee of £60m.

The Sun stated that City and Spurs are both willing to pay that price to land the talented whiz before the end of the summer transfer window, but it remains to be seen when they are planning to do that.

It is also unclear as to where Eze sees his immediate future. The English dynamo may want to remain with Palace or may not be interested in a move to The Etihad, which means it remains to be seen how viable a transfer for him is at this stage.

If Guardiola's side can secure a deal for his services, though, then he could be a dream alternative to Olmo to bolster the squad for next season.

Why Man City should sign Eberechi Eze

Firstly, the midfield wizard only turned 26 last month and is now heading into the prime years of his career, which means that the club would be landing a player who could make an immediate impact on the pitch whilst also having plenty of time left ahead of him.

Eze's performances in the Premier League last season also suggest that the quality is there for him to be an excellent addition to the group ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

His displays were not enough to convince Gareth Southgate to hand him regular game time at the Euros, though, as he made three appearances as a substitute and failed to provide a goal or an assist.

A move to Manchester City, where he would be competing for titles and playing Champions League football, could put him in the spotlight and increase his chances of breaking into the England starting XI in the months and years to come.

The 26-year-old star, who was described as an "entertainer" by analyst Ben Mattinson, caught the eye with his ability as a scorer and a creator of goals from an attacking midfield position.

As you can see in the table above, Eze scored more goals and produced more key passes per game than Olmo did in the Bundsliga with Leipzig.

This suggests that he could be a fantastic alternative to the Spaniard as he has already proven himself in the Premier League, whereas the Euros winner has yet to experience English football and there is no telling how he would adapt.

Therefore, City should swoop for the mercurial midfielder to add to their depth in the middle of the park as someone who could hit the ground running and make an instant impact in Manchester next season.

Henry Nicholls' battling ton puts New Zealand ahead on tough pitch

There were plenty of chances, but he capitalised on them as West Indies’ fast bowlers faded through the day

It’s unlikely Henry Nicholls will score a scratchier, more fortune-laden hundred, but runs are runs, and they’re worth even more when they come on a greentop offering pace, bounce and seam movement. Nicholls’ innings ensured New Zealand wrested control of the second Test away from West Indies, who had begun the opening day positively with their fast bowlers, led by Shannon Gabriel in his 50th Test, enjoying the help on offer at the Basin Reserve. At stumps, New Zealand were 294 for 6, with Nicholls batting on 117.Nicholls, who had come to the crease some ten minutes before lunch, survived a difficult period at the start of the second session, when Alzarri Joseph peppered him with short balls from over the wicket, pitching in the left-hander’s blind spot outside leg stump and attacking the area between his hip and shoulder. There was a top-edged pull that fell in no-man’s land, a short-leg catch that didn’t stick in Shamarh Brooks’ hands, and a hooked six that could have been a catch at long leg had Jermaine Blackwood stayed on the rope rather than move some 10 yards in.Then Gabriel and the debutant Chemar Holder, who had been the pick of West Indies’ bowlers before lunch, returned and created a rash of chances that, on another day, would have earned them more than just one wicket between them. On this day, both Gabriel – with a length ball slanted across him – and Chemar Holder – with a full one that straightened from around the wicket – found Nicholls’ outside edge only for Darren Bravo to put him down both times at first slip. All the luck notwithstanding, there was plenty to admire about Nicholls’ innings, especially his discipline outside off stump, and the positive intent he showed when the ball was in his favoured areas: particularly against the short ball, ironically. As his innings progressed, it felt as if his early wobbles against that form of attack had led West Indies to overuse it, erroneously, especially given that their successes early in the day had come via bowling full lengths.Tom Blundell was bowled by Shannon Gabriel•Getty Images

Gabriel had been erratic at the start of the day, straying too full and often too straight to concede 21 in his first two overs, but once he settled into a rhythm, he kept asking difficult questions of New Zealand’s batsmen.Back at the top of the order following BJ Watling’s return, Tom Blundell gave West Indies a clear challenge to bowl full at him with his method of camping deep in the crease. Gabriel struck in the seventh over, finding a length that brought Blundell half-forward and bowling him through the gate with sharp inward movement.Tom Latham had set the platform for a big New Zealand total in Hamilton with a 184-ball 86 that was distinguished by his willingness to leave on length. There was even more bounce available in Wellington, and Latham left a fair few balls that whizzed six inches over the top of off stump as he moved serenely – save for a blow to the elbow from a Gabriel delivery that reared from a length – to 27.But West Indies were also more willing to try and get him to drive, even if it meant serving up the occasional half-volley. They found the perfect line and length for him in the sixth over after the drinks break, courtesy Chemar Holder. The ball was full enough to induce the drive without being full enough to feed the stroke. Then it straightened, and Latham, who was a little late getting his weight fully onto the front foot, edged behind. That wicket brought Ross Taylor to the crease. Gabriel immediately reappeared, discomfiting Taylor with seam movement and extra bounce, hitting him on the chest before getting one to straighten in the corridor, producing a hard-hands jab that he edged behind. At this point – New Zealand 78 for 3 and without Kane Williamson, 2.3 overs before lunch – it felt as if West Indies were slightly ahead. But through the rest of the day they let their control slip. Apart from the overuse of the short ball, they would have also been disappointed with Jason Holder’s display. Though he bowled more overs than any of his colleagues and ended the day as the only bowler with an economy rate below 3 an over, he presented surprisingly little threat in helpful conditions, often bowling a touch too short to get the edges, or a touch too wide to make the batsmen play.Henry Nicholls with a controlled pull shot that ensures the ball stays down•Getty Images

Nicholls was aided in his efforts by three successive half-century stands. Will Young played a couple of pristine drives down the ground, but endured a difficult time otherwise, with the West Indies quicks attacking his weakness of a short front-and-across trigger movement that left him crease-bound and in vulnerable positions both against the full ball angled into him and the rising ball in the corridor. Gabriel delivered the perfect example of the latter, laden with away seam, to finally end Young’s stay, and pick up his 150th Test wicket.By then he had added 70 with Nicholls, and the next two partnerships swelled New Zealand’s score by 55 and 83 respectively. Watling made 30 and looked perhaps the most fluent of New Zealand’s batsmen before chopping on to Joseph, and Daryl Mitchell showed plenty of positive intent – especially against the offspin of Roston Chase – to score 42 before being trapped in front by a blockhole ball from Chemar Holder.By then, Nicholls had reached his sixth Test hundred, breaking a run of 13 innings without a fifty. He grew increasingly secure at the crease without ever looking entirely fluent, and it seemed entirely appropriate that he brought up his hundred with a leading edge through point while looking to work the ball through midwicket.

One of them is Atalanta star Ademola Lookman, coming after an excellent campaign under Gian Piero Gasperini. There have been reports that Chelsea are prepared to bid for Lookman, and now another report explains how much they could offer for the Nigerian.

Chelsea prepared to bid nearly £50 million for Lookman

Calciomercato explains that Chelsea are willing to offer nearly £50 million to sign Lookman, but are not alone, with Liverpool and Man United also in the chase.

The 26-year-old, who can operate as a second striker, racked up 17 goals and 10 assists across 45 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A side last season.

Lookman also ended Bayer Leverkusen's incredible unbeaten run last season in dramatic style, bagging a hat-trick against Xabi Alonso's side as Atalanta beat Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League final.

“Honestly, this is why you play football,” said former Liverpool striker Peter Crouch on TNT Sports.

“Somebody like Lookman, who’s been around, a footballing nomad at times, somebody who’s been Sunday League, to Charlton, to Fulham on loan, Leicester, Leipzig, he’s gone around the houses to get to the moment where he’s found a home today and scored a hat-trick in a European final. It’s an amazing story. Those fans will never forget the name of Ademola Lookman. It’s absolutely sensational.

"It’s really emotional for him. Obviously his family, I’m sure. It was a footballing masterclass from Gasperini. They were brilliant as a team, but I’m so pleased for Lookman.”

Meanwhile, fellow TNT pundit Joe Cole claimed he made history with his Europa League final heroics.

“For Lookman, a kid from Wandsworth, who played in the cages, playing street football, going around the houses, not finding a place where he’s at home, he’s found a home here,” Cole said.

“They will love him forever. His name will be etched into the club’s history. This is what the moments are all about. A kid, who couldn’t find a club, couldn’t find a home, super talented, he’s gone and done it. Fair play to him and his family. Enjoy the moment.”

Newcastle eyeing move for £120,000-p/w England star who scored at St James’

Newcastle United's attention has switched straight to the transfer market following the conclusion of the Premier League season, with the Magpies now reportedly plotting a move to sign a forward their defenders know all about.

Newcastle transfer news

PIF certainly aren't messing around, with deals reportedly already on the cards to sign both Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo this summer as their contracts at Bournemouth and Fulham come to an end. The two reported deals will ease Eddie Howe's defensive depth concerns once and for all amid injuries to Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman that will drag into the next campaign.

Reports also suggest that the Magpies are looking to sign extra quality to boost Howe's attacking options and perhaps replace Callum Wilson in either the short or long term.

According to The Telegraph, Newcastle are plotting a move to sign Jarrod Bowen from West Ham United this summer, while also showing interest in Everton's Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The former enjoyed another excellent campaign at the London Stadium, with one of his 16 Premier League goals coming in a thriller against Newcastle, which eventually saw the Magpies secure a dramatic 4-3 victory at St James' Park.

Now, those at St James' Park could get more than just a small sample of what Bowen is capable of, as Newcastle plot negotiations with West Ham and then the forward in talks that could see them upgrade his current salary of £120k-a-week.

Whilst Wilson's injury troubles have often left Alexander Isak carrying the goalscoring mantle at Newcastle, Bowen's arrival would instantly form one of the most dangerous strike partnerships in the entirety of the Premier League, given the seasons that both have just enjoyed.

What's most impressive about Bowen are his assists and expected goals rate. His ability to create as well as remain clinical in front of goal – having outperformed his expected goals by just over five – should unlock another level in Isak to take Newcastle as a whole to the heights they found themselves in the 2022/23 season.

Looking at the numbers, it's no surprise that former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for Bowen earlier this season, saying via This is Anfield: “Playing without Antonio, and Bowen steps up in that position – probably my favourite player besides my players. It’s just great what he’s doing and how he develops.”

Now, the German could be one of many watching on as the West Ham man potentially completes a summer switch to Newcastle.
