West Brom could sign Phillips replacement who scored in playoff finals

West Bromwich Albion didn't mess around after exiting the Championship play-off semi-final stages, revealing their retained list five days after their 3-1 second-leg defeat to the Saints, with seven senior Baggies players released in the process.

Out of all those chucked to the scrapheap, Matt Phillips' exit would have stung the most, considering the experienced 33-year-old had accumulated 255 appearances for the Baggies in total across eight memorable seasons, before being greeted with this news after an injury-heavy 2023/24 campaign personally.

Still, the ageing attacker registered 26 appearances when fit for Carlos Corberan's men and played his part somewhat – picking up six goal contributions along the way – but will now find he's a free agent come the end of this month regardless.

This could mean West Brom are in the market for many a winger to fill gaps in the areas down the flanks at the Hawthorns, which is why the promotion nearly-men are looking at this potential capture to soften the blow of the 33-year-old leaving for nothing.

West Brom still in the hunt for "fantastic" forward

Fresh off the back of a "fantastic" season with Oxford United, as it was described by football pundit Carlton Palmer recently, Josh Murphy now has a major decision to make, with his contract situation at the Kassam Stadium unresolved.

The Sun reported back in April that the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Southampton, Queens Park Rangers and more were going after the electric winger's services, who bagged ten goals from 38 games in total for the U's on the way to promotion being sealed.

Two of those ten strikes came during his side's victorious play-off final win over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley, as Murphy's tricks and flicks down the left wing proved too much for the Trotters to handle on the day, who collapsed on the big stage for Des Buckingham's men to win 2-0 to pull off a shock promotion.

Still hopeful that their ex-Norwich City man could stay put in Oxfordshire for his side's exciting voyage up to the Championship, with contract talks currently underway, the Baggies will still have their fingers crossed they can tempt him to relocate to the West Midlands instead, to possess a player in a similar ilk to Phillips again.

Why Murphy would be a strong Phillips replacement

Despite being more of a natural left winger, which is a position that also needs filling in Corberan's camp with Mikey Johnston returning back to Celtic, Murphy can still be a Phillips replacement in terms of what he offers to West Brom even whilst operating on the left flank.

Both content with twisting and turning defences with slaloming runs when darting forward, as can be seen in the table below, Murphy's ten goal contributions just in the regular season – all of which came in 2024 – wasn't far off being eclipsed by Phillips' six either, despite the soon-to-be free agent playing two games less as a regular absentee to the Hawthorns treatment room.

Bettering Phillips on a number of their comparative attacking statistics, however, Murphy could be viewed as the perfect replacement for Phillips, as well as bolstering the left channel for Corberan's men, with Johnston also departing meaning the Baggies need a new hero there.

Corberan's immediate future in the Baggies hot-seat isn't even secure at the moment though, but they'll hope he stays put in the dug-out for next season, with Murphy shining brightly potentially for a side who could go one better and win promotion next campaign.

West Brom could seal a "very special" signing to transform Thomas-Asante

West Bromwich Albion will hope Brandon Thomas-Asante is back firing in the goals next season regularly alongside this new recruit.

Sammy-Jo Johnson: 'Australia the hardest team in the world to get into at the moment'

Across the space of three days in 2011 playing for Queensland, Sammy-Jo Johnson dismissed Alyssa Healy twice. It wasn’t long after she had been told there wasn’t a place for her with New South Wales. Now, nine years later, the stars have aligned to bring her back to Sydney as she pushes her case for Australia selection. Her partner, Brian, found work in Sydney and after he had done so much to support Johnson’s career, it was a chance to repay the favour. And it just so happened that New South Wales had vacancies in the pace department following the retirements of Rene Farrell and Sarah Aley.”As a young teenager the dream was to play for the [NSW] Breakers,” she told ESPNcricinfo. “I don’t think I’ve really come to terms with it. I don’t regret playing for Queensland; I’ve loved the opportunity, I’ve had nine years and they’ve helped me become the person I am today. I wouldn’t be where I am without Queensland Cricket. But it is nice to come back – this was a dream, now I get to do it when I’m at the top of my game and hopefully, it might give me a chance to put on that green and gold shirt.”ALSO READ: All the Australian state squads for the 2020-21 seasonHowever, the journey has been far from easy. Her father died in 2012, there followed two years where she didn’t represent Queensland and jobs were lost, leaving the battle to scrape together a living and find somewhere to live. It appeared as though the cricket career could fade away.”You come across adversities – everyone goes through different things – and experiencing what I did at the ages I did has made it so much easier when you are in a professional environment, because you know when you have a bad day. I’ve always got the outlook that there is more to life than cricket, but you enjoy it while you can,” she said. “Every day I get to put on the kit of whatever team I’m playing for, I just enjoy it, have fun. I’m a pretty laid-back person. I’ve also said it’s not a right, it’s a privilege to put on a shirt and that’s what I live by.”Early doors I thought this is awesome – I want to play for my country – then life hits you smack bang in the face and you go, ‘hang on, am I good enough?’ You go through some ups and downs, start second-guessing your skill. I was driving three-and-half hours each way from Lismore to Brisbane three times a week to train, off the back of not a lot of money in women’s cricket. The love and passion for the game is what drives most of us, because anyone [of] my age realises it’s not about the money. We do it because we love the game and play with our mates.”Johnson has pushed hard for that international debut over the last two years, earning regular Australia A selection and performing impressively for the Brisbane Heat in the WBBL. Where she plays her Big Bash cricket next season still remains to be confirmed due to the contract embargo currently in place, but her last two summers have brought 38 WBBL wickets while in 2018-19, she also hit 260 runs at a strike-rate of 139.78.Sammy-Jo Johnson celebrates her half-century•Getty Images

“My first [Australia A] tour was to India so that was very eye-opening,” she said. “I was actually very nervous because I’d never been to the subcontinent. You start second-guessing yourself a little – am I fit enough, am I strong enough? – but I played really well, and really enjoyed the experience. That set me up for WBBL 4. I just had self-belief and it’s funny what a bit of self-belief can do for you.”Last year, Johnson closed up the gardening business she co-owned so she could focus more on her cricket and that international ambition. She is currently employed part-time with Rebel Sport, a job that allows her the freedom to focus on training and playing when needed.”Trying to play cricket at this level, traveling, touring, it got too hard trying to run the behind the scenes stuff,” she said. “If I really want to give playing for Australia a red hot crack, I needed to commit those extra hours that I’m spending on paperwork and admin, into recovering and making sure I’m ready for my next session or game.”I think [Australia] is the hardest team in the world to get into at the moment because they are so successful and everyone plays their role. You don’t want people to get injured, but I feel like it’s your only foot in the door at the moment – which is good because you want that competition. If I can keep churning out consistent performances with the ball and bat I’m hoping going to give the selectors no reason not to pick me.”However, there is another challenge to moving to the next level: playing enough cricket. That is particularly relevant approaching a 50-over World Cup, which is due to take place next February and March in New Zealand, with the Women’s National Cricket League consisting of eight round-robin matches per team and a final. In May, when domestic cricket was briefly threatened with cuts amid Cricket Australia’s problems, Australia’s wicketkeeper Healy spoke out about the imbalance in the game, and Johnson believes the WNCL should be expanded to a full home-and-away season campaign of 12 matches.”We train for so many months of the year and we’ve only just got to eight WNCL games,” she said. “Myself and all the players in other states want to be playing more cricket. The WBBL is fantastic, I think we have the right number of games for that and it now has its own window. I hope off the back of the T20 World Cup final that women’s cricket will only get bigger, but for the young kids coming through it’s not just about 20-over cricket. There’s a one-day World Cup next year and we need more 50-over cricket so the girls can continue to show their skills to put pressure on for the Aussie team.”Come the new season, Johnson will be taking every chance she has to do just that.

"Official offer" – Unai Emery approves Aston Villa bid for 23 year-old

Aston Villa could be set to swoop for a Turkish league star this summer after Unai Emery personally approved the move, according to reports.

Villa and NSWE backing Emery

After the incredible progress made by Aston Villa, they would be silly not to back the Spaniard. Taking over with the club battling relegation, he has transformed them into a Premier League powerhouse once more, and they look set to return to the Champions League for the first time since the 1980s, with a seven-point advantage over 5th placed Tottenham with Ange Postecoglou's side having just three games left to play.

They could also still record silverware, though they will need a historic result against Olympiacos in Athens on Thursday after falling to a 4-2 defeat to the Greek side at Villa Park in the UEFA Conference League semi-final.

That would set up a final against one of Fiorentina and Club Brugge, and would crown what has already been an incredible campaign in the Midlands.

Transfer plans have already been put in place, with Villa seemingly set to pounce upon Spanish free agent Mario Hermoso at the request of Emery. They have also reportedly sent scouts to watch Alex Baena ahead of a potential summer transfer, with the Villarreal man having played for Emery before, though it is understood that the Villans would have to trigger his reported €60m (£52m) release clause to make any deal happen this summer.

Muci bid gets Emery seal of approval

A new target comes in the form of Besiktas midfielder Ernest Muci, who Villa have reportedly had a long-term interest in. The attacking midfielder has scored twice in seven outings for Besiktas, but Villa fans will remember him for the three goals he grabbed in two games against them earlier in the season while plying his trade for Legia Warsaw.

Aston Villa target £52m Emery favourite who plays like Grealish

Unai Emery’s team would solidify their hopeful status among Europe’s elite with this ambitious signing.

ByAngus Sinclair May 7, 2024

Besiktas president Hasam Arat has claimed that he has rejected one offer and is keen to keep the Albanian beyond this summer.

The 9-cap Albania international is under contract until 2027, and taking home £49,000 per week, has shown no intention of changing clubs six months after arriving.

But that has not stopped Villa from trying, with reports from Turkey now claiming that "an official offer" is "on the way" for the midfielder, though that offer is expected to be around 15m euros, which is likely to be rejected given that a bid of 20m euros has already been turned down.

However, the deal is being pushed after Emery "gave his approval" to the deal, who could replace loanee Nicolo Zaniolo in the Aston Villa midfield. With this in mind, and given how much Emery has already had his way at Villa Park, the Midlands outfit could up their offer to get Emery his man.

First day of New Zealand's tour match cancelled due to extreme heat

New Zealand opted not to play against Victoria XI at Scotch College keeping player safety in mind

New Zealand have cancelled the opening day of their scheduled two-day tour match against Victoria XI in Melbourne on Friday due to extreme heat that is forecast.Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting temperatures of 43C in Melbourne on Friday combined with hot north-westerly winds. New Zealand’s first Test against Australia was played in 40-degree temperatures each day in Perth and now, the visitors have opted to cancel the first day’s play against Victoria.New Zealand did not play a warm-up game prior to the first Test and this was their only practice match outside of the three Tests on the tour. The game was scheduled to be a two-day red-ball match played on Friday and Sunday with a day’s break in between. They will instead train on Saturday morning at the MCG when temperatures are expected to be a far milder 23C before playing at Scotch College in a single day game on Sunday when the temperature is forecast to be 21C, where it has already been agreed that New Zealand will bat first.New Zealand coach Gary Stead said it was a common-sense outcome with player safety at the forefront of their mind.”(We’ve) decided to cancel tomorrow’s game just purely for player welfare and looking after the players,” Stead said. “If it’s going to be that hot then I’m not sure we’re going to get too much out of it and there’s just the danger element as well.”New Zealand’s bowlers will get a work out on Saturday morning in the MCG nets.”The guys can bowl the overs then that they would have bowled on Friday and we’ll still play the game on Sunday which will be a batting day for us,” Stead said.”It’s hard to underestimate the effect that Perth had on us as well. We were in 40-degree temperatures every day. The travel back from Perth to Melbourne is pretty gruelling as well and guys are still struggling a little bit to get their sleep patterns right. Having the extra day shouldn’t do any harm for us at all. “New Zealand trained in warm conditions in Melbourne on Wednesday and fast bowler Trent Boult got through the session unscathed and looks likely to line-up on Boxing Day after missing the Perth Test with an intercostal injury.”Trent bowled really well,” Stead said. “He looked somewhere near back to his best. He’s certainly on track to be available for the MCG Test.”

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

To keep up with the challenges of a more competitive division, the Red Dragons have made five signings this summer: Arthur Okonkwo, Lewis Brunt, George Dobson, Callum Burton, and Sebastian Revan. However, Parkinson has warned Reynolds and McElhenney that further incomings are necessary to maintain the club's upward momentum and taste success in League One.

  • WHAT PARKINSON SAID

"Arthur was with us on loan last season and knew us anyway but the new signings have fitted in well with the group," Parkinson told reporters.

"There is nothing better when you are a new signing to get to know your teammates on a tour like this. The squad is not there yet but hopefully, we are getting there."

Parkinson's demands are not hollow as a study by Genting Casino showcased the challenges Wrexham face in League One. The analysis compared Wrexham to other clubs promoted to the second tier of English football over the past four seasons. It revealed that Wrexham's squad size of 29 players and average age of 28.3 years are below the League One averages, which underscore the need for further squad strengthening to compete effectively at this higher level.

Chris Green encouraged by 'good feedback' from Australia set up

The offspinner has an outstanding powerplay record which may yet earn him international honours

Andrew McGlashan22-Oct-2019Offspinner Chris Green has been encouraged that Australia’s selectors are taking notice of his nomadic T20 career ahead of next year’s World Cup as he returns home ahead of the Big Bash season with the Sydney Thunder.Green has traversed the global over recent months taking part in Canada’s Global T20, the T20 Blast and the CPL having earlier in the year played in the PSL.Most recently he was with the Guyana Amazon Warriors who strung together 11 wins on the bounce to reach the CPL final before falling short against the Barbados Tridents. He continued to excel in his role as a leading Powerplay bowler, conceding under a run-a-ball in that phase of the innings – as well as claiming a career-best 4 for 14 against the Tridents in the group stage – and since April 2016 has the best Powerplay economy (5.96) in the world. This is yet to earn him international honours – with Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar selected in Australia’s T20I squad to face Sri Lanka and Pakistan – but he has been told he is not too far away and will have the chance to shine against international opposition on Thursday as part of the Prime Minister’s XI side against the Sri Lankans in Canberra.”I’ve been fortunate to get some good feedback and the opportunities to play in the CA XI game against South Africa [last season] and now the PM’s game is good feedback to know that you are thereabouts and that’s pretty much what the selectors have told me,” Green told ESPNcricinfo. ” [They said] if you keep putting in performances you will push your case, but I’m fully aware that Zampa and Agar have been doing a good job and Nathan Lyon has been bowling well in one-day cricket as well.”I sort of see of my role as very different to those three so I have to keep growing my game and if I can contribute with the bat more consistently I think that will enhance my chances in the future. My dream is to play cricket for Australia, much like every kid growing up with a cricket bat in hand. I’m just looking forward to the opportunity back on home soil and enjoying the challenge.”Green’s record in the Powerplay may yet be a point of difference that interests the selectors, but the man himself is not one to delve too deeply into the numbers.”It’s nice accolades to get, but to be honest I don’t really pay too much attention to them,” he said. “For me it’s more about competing in the moment on a ball-by-ball basis and hopefully winning those battles will put my teams in good positions. My focus isn’t really on the numbers, it’s more about having fun.”After the Canberra match there will be some grade cricket for Green ahead of the new Big Bash season which begins on December 17. It is a chance for Green to spend some time on home soil and, briefly at least, unpack the suitcase but he is quite happy jetting around the globe.”I’ve got pretty good at packing and unpacking, being home and settling in, that feeling when you sit down on the couch, is really nice. I can’t complain at the moment, I really enjoy what I do, the opportunities I’ve been fortunate enough to get have been so much fun.”The journey I’ve gone on has been unbelievable experience. I really feel that due to the high-pressure nature and fast pace that the way that T20 is it’s really excelled my growth as a cricketer and a person. I still pinch myself on a day-to-day basis to be playing around the world.”After the six T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which begin in Adelaide on Sunday, Australia’s next matches in the format will be after the Big Bash on tour in South Africa. That is followed by three more in New Zealand at the end of March.

Celtic star’s huge impact vs Motherwell rescued Rodgers alongside Idah

Celtic appeared to be on course for more dropped points as they were 1-0 down at half-time against Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers' side found themselves behind and the manager decided to be brave and bring deadline day signing Adam Idah off the bench in place of Kyogo Furuhashi.

The Ireland international turned out to be the hero for the Hoops as he scored the equaliser within six minutes and then made it 2-1 in stoppage time, shortly before Luis Palma made sure of the three points with a third goal.

Celtic forward Luis Palma.

He was not the only star of the show off the bench for the Scottish giants, though, as fellow substitute Hyun-jun Yang made a huge impact for Rodgers in the second half.

Adam Idah's performance in numbers

The Norwich City loanee brilliantly got on the end of a cross from Greg Taylor to head the ball into the far corner to make it 1-1 in the 51st minute, shortly after coming into the game as a substitute.

Idah was then impressive with the little he did get of the ball over the subsequent 40 minutes or so as he completed one of his two attempted dribbles and eight of his ten passes.

The Irish marksman, who won four of his seven duels in total, also did brilliantly to win a free-kick on the edge of the box by holding onto and then rolling the centre-back, who had to drag him down on the turn.

His most important touch then came in the 94th minute as the centre-forward expertly diverted Alistair Johnston's cross into the bottom corner with his left foot to put Celtic in front for the first time.

Hyun-jun Yang's performance in numbers

Yang also came off the bench during the second half and made his mark on the match alongside Idah, with a fantastic cameo in place of Nicolas Kuhn.

Sky Sports co-commentator and former Hoops striker Chris Sutton was quick to highlight the huge "impact" the South Korean wizard made on multiple occasions during the live coverage of the game.

The 21-year-old ace gave the defenders something to think about with his dynamic movements and clever play to create openings for the Scottish side.

His clever move inside opened the space for him to clip the ball into Johnston's path in stoppage time, which allowed the full-back to cross for Idah for the winner.

Yang, who actually had fewer touches (32) than goalkeeper Joe Hart (34), then registered an assist of his own with a fantastic ball over to the back post for Palma to tap in to make it 3-1 and secure all three points in the 96th minute.

In total, the young gem played just 29 minutes but was heavily involved in the second and third goals for Celtic, and created two chances and one 'big chance', on the right wing.

He also worked hard for the team to make two tackles and one interception, which shows that Yang put the effort in to go and take control of the game rather than waiting for his teammates to get him involved.

Therefore, the impressive forward made a huge impact for Rodgers alongside Idah and deserves big praise for his outstanding cameo at Fir Park.
