Sterling dropped from Chelsea squadWinger demands clarity on his club futureMaresca admits exits are neededWHAT HAPPENED?

Sterling's future at Chelsea has been plunged into fresh doubt after new boss Enzo Maresca dropped the winger from his squad to face Manchester City. The move was met with a swift reponse from Sterling's camp. His representatives issued a statement demanding "clarity" on his future and making it clear he had been expecting to feature against Pep Guardiola's side.

The situation has already attracted criticism from Chelsea fans who have been left unimpressed with Sterling's attitude. A possible move away from Chelsea does now appear a strong possibility for Sterling, with Maresca's comments on the winger likely to fuel speculation further about a summer exit from the club.

WHAT MARESCA SAID

The Chelsea boss had the following response when asked if he wants Sterling in his squad. He told reporters: "I want all 30 players but there is no space for all of them so some have to leave."

Maresca also spoke about Sterling's statement in an interview to BBC Match of the Day: "To be honest, I didn't see the statement. I have nothing to say. It was a tactical decision, no more than that. in the next day, we will clarify in case we need to. I have been clear, it's a tactical decision. I didn't see it."

First day of New Zealand's tour match cancelled due to extreme heat

New Zealand opted not to play against Victoria XI at Scotch College keeping player safety in mind

New Zealand have cancelled the opening day of their scheduled two-day tour match against Victoria XI in Melbourne on Friday due to extreme heat that is forecast.Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting temperatures of 43C in Melbourne on Friday combined with hot north-westerly winds. New Zealand’s first Test against Australia was played in 40-degree temperatures each day in Perth and now, the visitors have opted to cancel the first day’s play against Victoria.New Zealand did not play a warm-up game prior to the first Test and this was their only practice match outside of the three Tests on the tour. The game was scheduled to be a two-day red-ball match played on Friday and Sunday with a day’s break in between. They will instead train on Saturday morning at the MCG when temperatures are expected to be a far milder 23C before playing at Scotch College in a single day game on Sunday when the temperature is forecast to be 21C, where it has already been agreed that New Zealand will bat first.New Zealand coach Gary Stead said it was a common-sense outcome with player safety at the forefront of their mind.”(We’ve) decided to cancel tomorrow’s game just purely for player welfare and looking after the players,” Stead said. “If it’s going to be that hot then I’m not sure we’re going to get too much out of it and there’s just the danger element as well.”New Zealand’s bowlers will get a work out on Saturday morning in the MCG nets.”The guys can bowl the overs then that they would have bowled on Friday and we’ll still play the game on Sunday which will be a batting day for us,” Stead said.”It’s hard to underestimate the effect that Perth had on us as well. We were in 40-degree temperatures every day. The travel back from Perth to Melbourne is pretty gruelling as well and guys are still struggling a little bit to get their sleep patterns right. Having the extra day shouldn’t do any harm for us at all. “New Zealand trained in warm conditions in Melbourne on Wednesday and fast bowler Trent Boult got through the session unscathed and looks likely to line-up on Boxing Day after missing the Perth Test with an intercostal injury.”Trent bowled really well,” Stead said. “He looked somewhere near back to his best. He’s certainly on track to be available for the MCG Test.”

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Wrexham have achieved rapid ascent under the ownership of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney earning consecutive promotions, moving from the National League to League One, to climb up to the third tier of the English football pyramid. This is significant progress as they continue to chase their dream of earning a Premier League spot within this decade.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

To keep up with the challenges of a more competitive division, the Red Dragons have made five signings this summer: Arthur Okonkwo, Lewis Brunt, George Dobson, Callum Burton, and Sebastian Revan. However, Parkinson has warned Reynolds and McElhenney that further incomings are necessary to maintain the club's upward momentum and taste success in League One.

  • WHAT PARKINSON SAID

"Arthur was with us on loan last season and knew us anyway but the new signings have fitted in well with the group," Parkinson told reporters.

"There is nothing better when you are a new signing to get to know your teammates on a tour like this. The squad is not there yet but hopefully, we are getting there."

Parkinson's demands are not hollow as a study by Genting Casino showcased the challenges Wrexham face in League One. The analysis compared Wrexham to other clubs promoted to the second tier of English football over the past four seasons. It revealed that Wrexham's squad size of 29 players and average age of 28.3 years are below the League One averages, which underscore the need for further squad strengthening to compete effectively at this higher level.

Chris Green encouraged by 'good feedback' from Australia set up

The offspinner has an outstanding powerplay record which may yet earn him international honours

Andrew McGlashan22-Oct-2019Offspinner Chris Green has been encouraged that Australia’s selectors are taking notice of his nomadic T20 career ahead of next year’s World Cup as he returns home ahead of the Big Bash season with the Sydney Thunder.Green has traversed the global over recent months taking part in Canada’s Global T20, the T20 Blast and the CPL having earlier in the year played in the PSL.Most recently he was with the Guyana Amazon Warriors who strung together 11 wins on the bounce to reach the CPL final before falling short against the Barbados Tridents. He continued to excel in his role as a leading Powerplay bowler, conceding under a run-a-ball in that phase of the innings – as well as claiming a career-best 4 for 14 against the Tridents in the group stage – and since April 2016 has the best Powerplay economy (5.96) in the world. This is yet to earn him international honours – with Adam Zampa and Ashton Agar selected in Australia’s T20I squad to face Sri Lanka and Pakistan – but he has been told he is not too far away and will have the chance to shine against international opposition on Thursday as part of the Prime Minister’s XI side against the Sri Lankans in Canberra.”I’ve been fortunate to get some good feedback and the opportunities to play in the CA XI game against South Africa [last season] and now the PM’s game is good feedback to know that you are thereabouts and that’s pretty much what the selectors have told me,” Green told ESPNcricinfo. ” [They said] if you keep putting in performances you will push your case, but I’m fully aware that Zampa and Agar have been doing a good job and Nathan Lyon has been bowling well in one-day cricket as well.”I sort of see of my role as very different to those three so I have to keep growing my game and if I can contribute with the bat more consistently I think that will enhance my chances in the future. My dream is to play cricket for Australia, much like every kid growing up with a cricket bat in hand. I’m just looking forward to the opportunity back on home soil and enjoying the challenge.”Green’s record in the Powerplay may yet be a point of difference that interests the selectors, but the man himself is not one to delve too deeply into the numbers.”It’s nice accolades to get, but to be honest I don’t really pay too much attention to them,” he said. “For me it’s more about competing in the moment on a ball-by-ball basis and hopefully winning those battles will put my teams in good positions. My focus isn’t really on the numbers, it’s more about having fun.”After the Canberra match there will be some grade cricket for Green ahead of the new Big Bash season which begins on December 17. It is a chance for Green to spend some time on home soil and, briefly at least, unpack the suitcase but he is quite happy jetting around the globe.”I’ve got pretty good at packing and unpacking, being home and settling in, that feeling when you sit down on the couch, is really nice. I can’t complain at the moment, I really enjoy what I do, the opportunities I’ve been fortunate enough to get have been so much fun.”The journey I’ve gone on has been unbelievable experience. I really feel that due to the high-pressure nature and fast pace that the way that T20 is it’s really excelled my growth as a cricketer and a person. I still pinch myself on a day-to-day basis to be playing around the world.”After the six T20Is against Sri Lanka and Pakistan, which begin in Adelaide on Sunday, Australia’s next matches in the format will be after the Big Bash on tour in South Africa. That is followed by three more in New Zealand at the end of March.

Celtic star’s huge impact vs Motherwell rescued Rodgers alongside Idah

Celtic appeared to be on course for more dropped points as they were 1-0 down at half-time against Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers' side found themselves behind and the manager decided to be brave and bring deadline day signing Adam Idah off the bench in place of Kyogo Furuhashi.

The Ireland international turned out to be the hero for the Hoops as he scored the equaliser within six minutes and then made it 2-1 in stoppage time, shortly before Luis Palma made sure of the three points with a third goal.

Celtic forward Luis Palma.

He was not the only star of the show off the bench for the Scottish giants, though, as fellow substitute Hyun-jun Yang made a huge impact for Rodgers in the second half.

Adam Idah's performance in numbers

The Norwich City loanee brilliantly got on the end of a cross from Greg Taylor to head the ball into the far corner to make it 1-1 in the 51st minute, shortly after coming into the game as a substitute.

Idah was then impressive with the little he did get of the ball over the subsequent 40 minutes or so as he completed one of his two attempted dribbles and eight of his ten passes.

The Irish marksman, who won four of his seven duels in total, also did brilliantly to win a free-kick on the edge of the box by holding onto and then rolling the centre-back, who had to drag him down on the turn.

His most important touch then came in the 94th minute as the centre-forward expertly diverted Alistair Johnston's cross into the bottom corner with his left foot to put Celtic in front for the first time.

Hyun-jun Yang's performance in numbers

Yang also came off the bench during the second half and made his mark on the match alongside Idah, with a fantastic cameo in place of Nicolas Kuhn.

Sky Sports co-commentator and former Hoops striker Chris Sutton was quick to highlight the huge "impact" the South Korean wizard made on multiple occasions during the live coverage of the game.

The 21-year-old ace gave the defenders something to think about with his dynamic movements and clever play to create openings for the Scottish side.

His clever move inside opened the space for him to clip the ball into Johnston's path in stoppage time, which allowed the full-back to cross for Idah for the winner.

Yang, who actually had fewer touches (32) than goalkeeper Joe Hart (34), then registered an assist of his own with a fantastic ball over to the back post for Palma to tap in to make it 3-1 and secure all three points in the 96th minute.

In total, the young gem played just 29 minutes but was heavily involved in the second and third goals for Celtic, and created two chances and one 'big chance', on the right wing.

He also worked hard for the team to make two tackles and one interception, which shows that Yang put the effort in to go and take control of the game rather than waiting for his teammates to get him involved.

Therefore, the impressive forward made a huge impact for Rodgers alongside Idah and deserves big praise for his outstanding cameo at Fir Park.

Teetering South Africa hope not to capsize

Big Picture

Seven matches in, India’s World Cup is about to begin. They will meet a South Africa side already two bruising games into their own campaign, and already reeling from defeat and injury. Knocked flat by England in the opener, they were left chasing Bangladesh’s dust on Sunday. Until Tuesday, no Indian squad member addressed the press while Faf du Plessis has spent more time in pressers than he has in the middle. It’s not that India haven’t found ways to fill the hours. Virat Kohli has been to London, to visit the Queen (no news on whether he frightened a little mouse under her chair) while the squad has even kicked back with a game of paintball between training sessions, and Sunday was a rest day.ALSO READ – Injured Dale Steyn out of World CupSouth Africa, meanwhile, have already had a batsman concussed, a bowler limp off with a tweaked hamstring, twice conceded 300-plus totals and twice failed to chase them down. And now possibly the biggest blow of all: Dale Steyn has been ruled out of the tournament. The India match will be their third in six days, and there has been barely any time for respite, never mind to formulate a Plan B (or C, or D).”Time to panic,” Jonty Rhodes tweeted as Bangladesh motored to their highest-ever ODI total on Sunday. If that was a time to panic then, comrades, now is the time to push the big, red button on this Chernobyl-style meltdown. If you’re a South African fan, this might be the time to look away. The numbers in this preview are going to make for gruesome viewing.South Africa – sans Steyn and Ngidi – will arrive at the Hampshire Bowl, a ground where 734 runs were scored just over three weeks ago ,with the task of taming a batting line-up that is, on reputation, second only to England in its destructive capacities. Virat Kohli is the best one-day batsman of the age, while Rohit Sharma is the only man ever to score three one-day double hundreds. Between them, they have scored more ODI hundreds (63) than the entire South African squad (61).And then there’s Shikhar Dhawan, who carries an average of 64.69 at ICC tournaments into this game. And even if South Africa can get past those three and into the middle order, MS Dhoni – Indian cricket’s paterfamilias himself – awaits there.ALSO READ: Gibson channels spirit of Anthony Joshua as South Africa on the ropesA strong Indian batting line-up is hardly news, but India are also here with what is arguably their best bowling attack in generations – and possibly their best ever in ODIs. Certainly, India’s current bowling attack has been their best between World Cups, going back as far as the 1999 tournament, which was the last one to be held in England. The present attack has picked up eight wickets, on average, per innings: the best for an Indian bowling attack between World Cups. They have also picked up a wicket once every 34 balls, again the best for an Indian bowling unit between World Cups. They will also be fresh. India will begin their campaign a week after the start of the ICC’s pinnacle 50-over tournament following the Lodha Commission’s recommendation which requires a 15-day window between the last IPL match and the first international fixture, and which the ICC have agreed to honour. While India are unburdened by anything other than, perhaps, expectation, South Africa are facing the prospect of having to win five of their next seven games in order to have a chance of progressing to the (historically, dreaded) knockouts. If it seams or swings, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami will get them. If it spins, Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal will. If it’s flat, Kohli and co. will bat them out of the game. South Africa have nowhere to hide.Bangladesh’s win at The Oval on Sunday wasn’t a shock. In their current state, a South African victory in Southampton would be.

South Africa: LLWWWIndia: LLLWWKL Rahul cuts during his century•AFP

In the spotlight

He bowled the only maiden of the innings as Bangladesh amassed their highest ever ODI total on Sunday, broke through a stubborn. 60-run opening stand, and returned with another vital breakthrough in the 43rd over, with Bangladesh poised, snapping a World Cup record partnership by getting rid of a set Mushfiqur Rahim for 78. Before he leaked leaked 22 runs from his last two overs – albeit in the midst of Mahmudullah and Mosaddek Hossain’s 66-run rampage – his figures were 8-1-30-2. Plan A is long gone for South Africa and without Ngidi and Steyn, Andile Phehlukwayo‘s ability to step up, wrest control and win crucial moments with both ball and bat will be key.KL Rahul has probably leapfrogged into the No. 4 position, having originally been something of a third back-up opener. His century against Bangladesh helped him to push Vijay Shankar aside and stake a claim for the position, and in both warm-ups he has been into the fray relatively early. Whatever his recent struggles in Test cricket might have been, Rahul expresses himself much more freely in limited-overs cricket. He’s got stars on either side of him in the batting order, but now he’s also got a chance to shine himself.

Team news

Steyn and Ngidi are out, but Hashim Amla did have a net the day before the game, and will play if fit. Beuran Hendricks, Steyn’s replacement, will only arrive on the morning of the match, so he’s not an option, and South Africa will instead have to decide whether to play two allrounders, two spinners, or an extra batsman. One way of squeezing both Amla and Aiden Markram in could be to play Markram at No. 5 – a position he has recent experience in in domestic franchise cricket.South Africa (possible): 1 Quinton de Kock (wk), 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Faf du Plessis (capt0, 4 Rassie van der Dussen, 5 Aiden Markram, 6 David Miller, 7 JP Duminy, 8 Andile Phehlukwayo, 9 Chris Morris, 10 Kagiso Rabada, 11 Imran Tahir”Kedar Jadhav is back to full fitness,” declared Kohli on the eve of the game, and he will likely fit snugly into India’s lower-middle order. The other questions for India will be around whether to part the wristspinners or play them together, as well as who the third seamer position will go to. The top order, meanwhile, looks settled, with Rahul the strongest contender for No. 4 with form on his side.India (possible): 1 Rohit Sharma, 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli (capt), 4 KL Rahul, 5 MS Dhoni (wk), 6 Kedar Jadhav, 7 Hardik Pandya, 8 Ravindra Jadeja/Yuzvendra Chahal, 9 Bhuvneshwar Kumar/Mohammed Shami, 10 Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Jasprit BumrahVirat Kohli gestures to his team-mates while training•AFP

Pitch and conditions

The pitch spent most of the day before the game under covers, but it appeared to have had a close shave, with a brown – rather than green – tinge to it afterwards. That probably means that, as usual, this will be a high-scoring game. Indeed, in the last five matches played here, the average first innings total is 311, and the average winning first innings score 336. Including the aforementioned high-scorer between England and Pakistan here, the team setting a total has won three of the last five games at the Hampshire Bowl. There was rain around the day before the game, and while the forecast is a little better on match day, inclement weather could still play a role.

Strategy punts

  • Quinton de Kock is clearly very importantto South Africa’s fortunes with the bat. Eleven of his 14 hundreds have come in wins for South Africa, and four of them have been against India, against whom he averages 96.40 (the only team against which he has achieved a better ODI average is Bangladesh). Aakash Choprareckons a full length, outside off, could do for de Kock but If he gets away against the seamers, India could look to deploy Chahal early against him: in the 17 balls he has received from Chahal in ODIs, de Kock has been dismissed twice, averaging 5 at a strike rate of just 52.9 head-to-head.
  • South Africa might not find much joy against Bumrah or the spinners, but they could well look to go after Bhuvneshwar Kumar – if he plays. In four innings in which he’s faced Bhuvneshwar, Markram has struck at 114.6, while du Plessis has really taken him on, with a strike rate of 130.8 and an average of 85 over six innings. Amla has scored a little more slowly at 72.4, but over an extended time of 12 innings, he’s averaged 97. De Kock, meanwhile, has scored 144 runs off 140 balls he has faced from Bhuvneshwar in ODIs, and never been dismissed by him.
  • India could spin to win. South Africa’s batting looks particularly vulnerable to spin. With the exception of du Plessis, who hasn’t been dismissed by him yet, none of the other South Africa batsmen average more than 15 against Kuldeep, who has taken a wicket every 18 deliveries against South Africa, his best against any opposition in ODIs. The other half of the Indian spin duo, Chahal has been no less threatening either. Du Plessis has again managed to survive, but India will consider restricting his strike rate to 54.5 as job done. Phehlukwayo is the only other batsman in the South Africa squad who has a decent record against Chahal.

Stats and Trivia

  • This will be Jasprit Bumrah’s 50th ODI. No bowler has taken more wickets than Bumrah (44) at the death since his ODI debut.
  • In his first World Cup as captain, it is worth reflecting on Kohli’s journey to this point. In ODIs since 2015 World Cup, no player has scored more runs (4,306) than Kohli. Among players to have played a minimum of 10 innings since 2015 World Cup, Kohli’s average of 78.3 is the best. Kohli has also scored 19 hundreds in this time, more than anyone else. He needs one more win to complete 50 in ODIs for India as captain.
  • Since 2012, however, India have beaten South Africa five times out of five at ICC events: at the World T20s in 2012 and 2014, at the 2013 and 2017 Champions Trophies, and at the World Cup in 2015.
  • South Africa have played in four World Cup semi-finals, losing all of them. But in four World Cup matches against India, they have won three times – including in 2011, when India were hosting.

Ambris 148 trumps Balbirnie 135 in record West Indies chase

Two men who are both not going to be in the World Cup in England, stole the show in neighbouring Ireland with power-packed centuries, but in the end Sunil Ambris had greater firepower around his 148 off 126, than Andy Balbirnie’s 135 off 124.Ambris is not part of West Indies’ World Cup squad, and while Balbirnie is going to be in Ireland’s squad whenever they play – they aren’t going to play in the World Cup.Ambris’s maiden ODI century meant West Indies hunted down Ireland’s imposing 327 for 5, completing their highest successful chase in the process. Ambris was pushed up to open only because John Campbell had a sore back after hitting 179 in the tournament opener, as part of a world-record opening partnership. He grabbed his chance though, and was confident right from the start, feasting on some ordinary bowling by Ireland to ensure West Indies’ chase never flagged. His innings pushed Balbirnie’s in the shade, but the Ireland No.3 was no less impressive, showing great shot selection and timing during his stay. However, West Indies’ firepower in batting meant they had enough in the tank to chase the target down on a flat pitch, even if the outfield was rendered sluggish due to rain on the previous day.Ambris batted till the 40th over, and all through, he kept West Indies abreast of the required run rate. When he was eventually out, Jonathan Carter and Jason Holder smashed the bowling around at close to ten runs per over to bring up victory in just 47.5 overs.Ambris and Shai Hope had gotten West Indies’ reply off to the perfect start, and they were aided by Ireland’s bowlers’ indiscipline. A boundary ball was never far away, even when a couple of good ones came together, and every time the bowlers started to build any sort of pressure, a release ball arrived. Ambris capitalised fully, and his aggression allowed Hope to tick along without playing extravagant shots. When Hope fell, Darren Bravo walked in and that was the only time Ireland gained any measure of control. Bravo was unable to get the ball away, but despite that, Ambris kept the run-rate healthy. He then shared a crucial 128-run stand with Roston Chase off 116 balls that dragged West Indies back on track, before Carter and Holder finished things off.Earlier, Balbirnie’s stand with half-centurions Paul Stirling (77 off 98) and Kevin O’Brien (63 off 40) first set a platform for Ireland, then launched them to a massive total.Balbirnie was in the middle in the fifth over, and stayed till the 44th. He settled into the groove seamlessly, and no West Indian bowler could tie him down. When they bowled with discipline he placed and nudged the ball. When they erred, he took full toll. He put on a brisk 146 with Stirling for the second wicket, with the opener mixing caution with bursts of explosion in contrast to Balbirnie’s more even-tempered knock. When Stirling fell, followed soon by William Porterfield – batting at No.4 for the first time for Ireland across formats – soon after, O’Brien joined Balbirnie, and the two put on 84 off just 63 balls. O’Brien was aggressive from the outset, and went ballistic against Jason Holder in the 48th over, carting the West Indies captain for three consecutive sixes before holing out off a bouncer. That late boost was the perfect finish after Balbirnie had provided the spine of the innings, but on a batting beauty, it proved to be a little short as West Indies moved to the top of the tri-series points table.
