Newcastle Could Sign Willock 2.0 In £21m ‘Gladiator’

Newcastle United have been considering a swoop for Stuttgart central defender Konstantinos Mavropanos this summer, but will now need to move swiftly to prevent rival Premier League interest.

Who wants to sign Konstantinos Mavropanos?

According to the Sun, the former Arsenal prospect is a target for Eddie Howe's Magpies, though West Ham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers currently lead the race to sign the Greece international.

The report claims that while Newcastle – who are in the market for a right-sided centre-back – are monitoring the situation, they do have other targets ahead on their shopping list.

It's thought the player has a release clause of €25m (£21m) in his contract.

How good is Konstantinos Mavropanos?

The 6 foot 4 "gladiator" – as praised by former boss Pellegrino Matarazzo – did not cut the mustard at the Emirates Stadium and made the move to Germany after playing just eight times for the Gunners, perhaps severing his chances having picked up a red card despite his little time on the pitch.

But since moving to the Bundesliga, he has gone from strength to strength and now boasts some remarkable metrics to have captured the attention of clubs such as Newcastle and the Hammers, who will both play in European competition this season.

As per FBref, the £13k-per-week titan ranks among the top 4% of centre-backs across Europe's top five leagues for shot-creating actions, the top 14% for progressive passes, the top 8% for progressive carries, the top 4% for successful take-ons, the top 1% for interceptions and the top 8% for aerials won per 90.

The dynamism and aptitude with both his physicality and technicality is discernible through such statistics, and given that he recorded an exemplary average Sofascore rating of 7.26 in the league last season, completing 86% of his passes, making 2.2 interceptions and 3.5 clearances per game, also succeeding with 66% of his total duels, Newcastle would have a dreamy new addition to bolster the backline.

konstantinos-mavropanos-premier-league-nottingham-forest-transfers

Newcastle have demonstrated an astute and diligent strategy regarding transfers over the past few years, and this would be a continuation of the club's overall growth, and if Mavropanos is tied up, it could be the second time league rivals Arsenal's loss has been turned to the Magpies' gain.

In August 2021, Joe Willock's impressive loan spell with the Toon was made permanent for £25m, and he has since been an integral part of the club's ascent, having made 35 displays in the Premier League last season, scoring three goals and supplying six assists as Newcastle earned a deserved top-four finish.

Hailed for his "stunning" development by Graeme Bailey, the £80k-per-week Englishman has also been lauded for his “limitless" potential by journalist Simon Collings and looks set for a prominent role as Newcastle continue to improve as a European force.

Signing Mavropanos too would really irk Arsenal, if the pair were able to combine and take even higher than last term's fourth-placed finish, or even further than the Carabao Cup finale defeat to Manchester United, ending a 54-year wait for major silverware.

With Mavropanos' robustness as an all-encompassing modern defender and Willock's creativity and directness in midfield, Newcastle might just elevate their imperious squad even higher, and leave the powers that be in north London watching on with a rueful gaze.

Southampton May Have Found Ideal Lavia Heir In £4m-Rated Ace

Southampton have been slow off the mark in terms of their transfer business this summer, not helped by a delay in appointing new manager Russell Martin, but that may be about to change.

Who have Southampton signed?

The Saints confirmed the arrivals of Derrick Abu and Josh McNamara from Chelsea and Manchester City respectively earlier this week, but neither player is expected to challenge for a first-team spot.

Southampton's lack of transfer activity is all the stranger when factoring in that Mislav Orsic has left for Trabzonspor, while the likes of Mohamed Elyounoussi and Theo Walcott are among those to have been released following the club's relegation to the Championship.

Martin's side may be forced to make a move soon, though, as James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia continue to be linked with a return to the Premier League, meaning at least one midfield replacement will have to be brought in.

According to The Guardian, Southampton have made signing West Ham United's Flynn Downes a top priority, with the former Swansea City ace likely to take Lavia's place in midfield.

How good is Flynn Downes?

It is no coincidence that Lavia is reportedly wanted by pretty much each of the Premier League's top-six elite, with Liverpool said to be willing to pay £40m for the 19-year-old, according to Football Insider – though even that may still be £10m below Southampton's valuation.

Lavia stood out in a poor Southampton side last season and ranked in the top 12% of all midfielders across Europe's top five leagues in terms of possession won, as per The Analyst.

The teenager will leave big boots to be filled at St Mary's – as will skipper Ward-Prowse should he also depart – but Flynn looks a good choice to do exactly that.

romeo-lavia-premier-league-transfers-man-united

Downes made very little impact in his first season with West Ham, having arrived from Swansea in a £12m deal last July, but he has proven pedigree in the second tier.

Indeed, the 71.9 passes per 90 minutes Downes completed in the 2021-22 season was the 10th-most of any player in the Championship, as per FBref, while his pass-completion rate of 92.6% was the best in the entire division.

The former England U20 international also led the way for pass-completion percentage among West Ham players in the Premier League last season (87.3), and will clearly bring some composure to Southampton's midfield should he arrive.

But he has many other qualities, plenty of which often go unnoticed. As Martin, who managed Downes at Swansea, put it: "He does the dirty work really well which sometimes goes unsung.

"He enables people to do their roles brilliantly. He plays with no ego at all and knows exactly what his role in the team is."

Doing the dirty work is an aspect Martin will need if Downes – now valued at just £4m by CIES Football Observatory – is indeed going to replace Lavia. With 1.18 tackles per 90 minutes in the middle third last season, Downes ranked second only to Lucas Paqueta (1.51) among Hammers players.

While West Ham may not have seen the best of Downes, the talented midfielder can clearly do a job at Championship level and may just be the player who truly kick-starts Russell's Southampton tenure.

Newcastle United Eyeing Swoop For "Outrageous" £103m Striker

Newcastle United are considering a swoop to bring Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos to the Premier League, according to reports.

How many goals did Goncalo Ramos score this season?

Ramos is naturally a striker who has played his football at the Estadio da Luz all of his career having graduated from the club’s academy to get promoted to the first-team back in 2020. He’s since gone on to become a regular feature of Roger Schmidt’s side, making 30 starts from 34 Liga Portugal games last season and finding the back of the net 19 times in those outings.

The Portugal international was heavily linked with a move to the northeast last summer when journalist Pedro Sepulveda reported that the Magpies were “interested” in striking a deal for the 22-year-old, which was followed up by O Jogo who claimed that he was still firmly on their radar in January, though once again, a switch failed to materialise.

Fabrizio Romano has hinted that AC Milan midfielder Sandro Tonali could finalise his transfer to Eddie Howe’s side within the next “few days”, and the boss will be hoping that his centre-forward target can follow in his footsteps, now eyeing a third attempt to bring Ramos to St. James’ Park.

Are Newcastle signing Ramos?

According to Football Transfers, Newcastle are “looking at” Ramos as a serious option for the summer as a result of Howe wanting to add to his attacking ranks.

Benfica’s striker, who has a staggering €120m (£103m) release clause, is believed to be “admired” by the recruitment team, and whilst it’s unknown whether an approach will be made in the coming weeks, there’s a chance that “groundwork” could be getting laid behind-the-scenes to go for it in the new year.

Benfica striker Goncalo Ramos.

Is Ramos a good signing for Newcastle?

Newcastle do already have strong centre-forward options in Callum Wilson and Alexander Isak, but Ramos, dubbed an “outrageous” player by talent scout Jacek Kulig, may have a higher ceiling than both of them, so it would be a massive coup should Howe be able to secure his services either this window or the next.

The Gestifute client posted 26 total goal contributions (19 goals and seven assists) in 30 Liga Portugal appearances last season which not only made him his club’s best-performing offensive player but he also received the division’s Striker of the Year award for 2022/23.

The World Cup participant additionally recorded 98 shots over the course of the campaign which was more than any of his fellow teammates, as per FBRef, so with the prolific threat that he could bring, Ramos joining would undoubtedly strengthen the squad ahead of next season.

Ireland, Afghanistan hoping for Test seal of approval

The two teams are hoping their performances at ICC’s limited-overs world events and the Intercontinental Cup first-class tournament can push their case

Peter Della Penna02-Feb-2017

Ireland have won four Intercontinental Cup titles, including three successive ones between 2005 and 2008•ICC/Saleem Sanghati

Ireland and Afghanistan are looking forward to a pivotal round of ICC meetings in the hope that they come out the other side as Test-playing countries. Among the topics up for discussion in front of the ICC board this weekend is the structure of Test cricket, and whether the five-day format should be opened up to more than the current ten Test sides. Specifically, it is Ireland and Afghanistan who are knocking on the door and waiting to see if the Full Member boards open up that possibility.Prospects for such a development have become brighter in recent times. Ireland’s inter-provincial competition was awarded first-class and List A status in October 2016. Afghanistan’s application to have first-class status granted to their multi-day domestic competition, meanwhile, is due to be examined at the Chief Executives Committee meeting on Thursday.Afghanistan recently declared their ambitions of achieving Full Member status. Their premier national competition has five teams compared to Ireland’s three-team elite structure, while Afghanistan’s domestic crowd numbers run well into the thousands, helping to satisfy the most nebulous aspect of ICC criteria: proving an established “cricket culture”. As such, Afghanistan’s administrators are confident that at the very least their domestic competition will be awarded the same first-class status as Ireland’s, and perhaps more.”We’ve submitted a proposal for Test status and in February they will decide about it,” Atif Mashal, chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, told ESPNcricinfo in a recent interview. “We had a very positive meeting with ICC. They were very happy for Afghanistan cricket, the development and sustainability of the cricket, the introduction of youngsters to our team.”Now we have many new names in the team and they are performing very well. Introducing new boys to the team is a plus thing because it is becoming a young, sustainable and well performing team. We have already reserved a place for Full Membership and after the criteria is passed by the full [ICC] board and executive committee, we are ready for Full Membership.”For Ireland and Afghanistan, it may help to argue for Test status without necessarily attaching Full Member status to it•AFP/Getty Images

Results at international level will also matter. At each of the previous three 50-over World Cups, Ireland have notched wins against Full Members while Afghanistan added the scalp of West Indies at the 2016 World T20 to their stretch of dominance over Zimbabwe. Both countries are already part of the 12-team ODI qualification table and have demonstrated consistently positive results in the highest multi-day competition available to them, the Intercontinental Cup.Since entering the competition in 2009, Afghanistan have won 14 games, lost once – to Ireland in the 2013 I-Cup final – and recorded four draws, including in their first-class debut match against a Zimbabwe XI in 2009. They beat Scotland in the 2010 final to claim the title in their first appearance at the tournament, and in the current tournament table are in second place behind Ireland. It’s a record that proves Afghanistan are ready for Tests, ACB chief executive Shafiqullah Stanikzai told ESPNcricinfo this past summer.Ireland won three I-Cup titles from 2005 to 2008 when the competition was crammed into a two-year cycle. They won again in 2013 by beating Afghanistan in the final and could have won more titles had the format not been rejigged to stretch out seven group matches over three years. Overall, since 2004, they have won 24 matches and drawn ten while losing only two. One of those losses was to Scotland in the first year of the competition, the other to Afghanistan in 2009. They have been unbeaten in their last 12 matches, which includes four wins in four matches in the current tournament that began in 2015.Despite demonstrating their cricketing prowess, each country’s fate may have just as much to do with their administrative nous off the field. Part of that is garnering support from other Full Members for inclusion. While the two-tier structure proposal was put on the back burner at the ICC annual conference, momentum may be growing for a dual-conference structure, thereby maintaining a semblance of competitive parity. In order to avoid rocking the boat with the ICC’s 10-team financial distribution model linked to Full Membership, it may also help to argue for Test opportunities without necessarily attaching Full Member status to them. One official believes, however, that nothing definitive will emerge until after the ongoing Intercontinental Cup. “One of the key objectives is to try and uncouple Test cricket from Full Membership,” the official said. “I don’t think that is going to be determined through the new membership of the Test cricket until following this latest Intercontinental Cup competition.”

Aston Villa Get Possible Big Boost With £120k-A-Week Hero

Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is looking likely to stay put beyond the summer, according to an update from transfer expert Dean Jones.

How important has Martinez been to Villa?

The Villans hero has enjoyed arguably the most memorable season of his career to date, playing a starring role for both club and country. The £120,000-a-week 'keeper famously tasted 2022 World Cup glory with Argentina, performing plenty of penalty heroics and arguably his country's star player along with Lionel Messi, enhancing his reputation hugely in the process.

For Villa, Martinez made 27 Premier League appearances in 2022/23, playing his part in them qualifying for Europe after a huge resurgence under Unai Emery.

The 30-year-old has been linked with a move away from Villa Park during the summer transfer window, however, with plenty of interest in his services. Granted, his current deal doesn't expire until 2027, but a move to an even bigger club could potentially appeal if an offer arrives.

Emiliano Martinez

Is Martinez likely to stay this summer?

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones provided an update on Martinez's future, admitting that it is still up in the air, but that the idea of him staying put is far from out of the question:

"I think obviously the Jose Sa one will depend on what happens with Emi Martínez. I keep hearing there is potential for Martínez to go if a big enough offer lands, but whenever Martínez talks at the moment, I kind of get the feeling that he's not going anywhere.

"So a tricky one but if they did lose Martínez, then yes, Sá would be an interesting one to turn to."

This would be a massive boost for Villa, with Martinez one of the most important players at the club these days, having now racked up 112 apparances since arriving from Arsenal back in 2020. He has been lauded as "world-class" by Gary Neville in the recent past, as well as "unbelievable" and "one of the best goalkeepers in the world" by teammate Matty Cash.

The fact that Emery's men have qualified for Europe could certainly sway the Argentine's thought process, and the fact that the club is thriving so much under the current manager, and the hope is that he continues to be a vital performer for many years to come for Villa.

Should he move on, which would clearly be a blow, it is then essential that the money is used wisely to bring in the best possible replacement.

'Williamson not a bad 200th scalp' – Ashwin

R Ashwin has chosen AB de Villiers’ wicket in Nagpur last season, getting Kane Williamson twice in this Test and dismissing Kumar Sangakkara repeatedly in Sri Lanka last year as some of the special memories in his journey to 200 Test wickets

‘I constantly compete with myself to get better’ – Ashwin

R Ashwin has chosen AB de Villiers’ wicket in Nagpur last season, getting Kane Williamson twice in this Test and dismissing Kumar Sangakkara repeatedly in Sri Lanka last year as some of the special memories in his journey to becoming the second-fastest man to 200 Test wickets. He could have been the fastest, but was denied by rain in two Tests in the West Indies. Ashwin reached the landmark in 37 Tests, while Australia’s Clarrie Grimmett took 36 matches. Before Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh was the fastest Indian bowler to reach the milestone, in 46 Tests.”Maybe Clarrie Grimmett was a nicer man than I am,” Ashwin joked. “I think it just had to be that way. It’s fine, honestly. There are a lot of positives to look at and lots of good memories that I’ve created over the last five-six years of international cricket, and to look back and feel sore about it [the rain] is not the right way to go about my career. So, I’m just happy where I am right now.”The memories of getting Sangakkara and de Villiers, among the best of all time, and Williamson, who is arguably the best Test batsman going around, have to be really special among those memories. “Kane Williamson is not a bad 200th scalp,” Ashwin said. “There are quite a few good wickets that I’ve had over a period of time. AB de Villiers in Nagpur was very well set up. Kane Williamson in this Test match in the first innings, I thought was a very, very good ball. Kumar Sangakkara in Sri Lanka… These are some special memories that I’ll always cherish in my cricketing career. I hope I can create more and more in the future.”Sangakkara played the last two matches of his Test career against India in 2015. Ashwin got him all four times, caught at slip twice, and at silly point and gully once each. He got de Villiers with a carrom ball in the second innings of the Nagpur Test. And in this Test, after consistent pressure on Williamson in the first innings, the batsman went for a cut against the turn, but the ball turned in sharply to beat the bat. Williamson had done almost everything right to adjust to the turn, but was beaten. For his 200th wicket, Ashwin trapped Williamson on the back foot and had him lbw.Ashwin had to overcome a difficult period when he was dropped after the 2013-14 Johannesburg Test. India had failed to bowl South Africa out in four-and-a-half sessions in the second innings at the Wanderers, after which Ashwin missed seven out of India’s nine Tests, all outside Asia. During that period, Ashwin rediscovered his game, fine-tuned his action and came back rejuvenated.”That phase is very, very important,” Ashwin said. “It taught me a lot, and more so, it emphasised that I should be working on my skill. And my skill has definitely been talked of ever since. This game, especially, I have a corn on my finger and I haven’t bowled a lot in the last 25 days. I’m not very happy with the way it has come out so far. I just hope that I can do better in the series.”Ashwin has amassed 18 five-fors and four ten-wicket match hauls so far, and has more Man-of-the-Series awards than any other Indian. After the day’s play, Ashwin said: “The last 80-100 wickets have been very, very good for me. Ever since I came back from Australia last year, and went to Bangladesh, I think that’s when I really started enjoying my bowling. I knew what I was doing very clearly, started planning my dismissals, knew exactly how to set batsmen up. It has been a wonderful journey over the last couple of years, I just hope it keeps going for some time.”One of the adjustments Ashwin made in this game was to go over the wicket to left-hand batsmen. He explained the move. “The way the New Zealand left-hand batsmen play is very different to the other left-handers,” Ashwin said. “They don’t plonk their foot across, they plonk it right down the wicket, try to play inside out a lot. It will work on this wicket because it doesn’t have enough bounce, turn and carry. So it will work on this wicket. Just trying to change a bit of angles, and our targets were better today.”So perhaps from around the wicket, Ashwin felt that the batsmen were not coming close enough to edging good balls, and were also succeeding in playing inside out to the ones that might not have been as threatening. Ashwin chose to speak more about his skills rather than detractors. Before the start of the season, Harbhajan had advised India to not ask for rank turners.”We don’t have enough time to read about all these things,” Ashwin said. “To be very honest, what kind of wickets we are playing is not something that [Ani] Kumble or [Virat] Kohli can go and roll wickets or water it. What we get is what we play on. Obviously, we are looking to play good cricket and it is not going to take the sheen off. It is very unfortunate that people don’t realise it. But it is very important that we enjoy the brand of cricket that we play, and win is a win. Savour it. If a Test match in England gets over in two days, nobody talks about it. Why in India, though?”

Wolves Keen On Snapping Up £106k-A-Week Attacker

Wolves are thought to be interested in signing Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz on a free transfer this summer, according to a new update.

Is Diaz set to leave Real Madrid?

The 29-year-old has spent two different spells with the La Liga giants and reigning Champions League holders since 2016, initially graduating from the B team, and then rejoining the club after one year with Ligue 1 side Lyon. He has always been limited to a bit-part role, however, given some of the world-class attacking talent on show at the Santiago Bernabeu, from Vinicius Jr to Karim Benzema, among many others.

Diaz has still racked up 84 appearances for Madrid, though, which is no mean feat, and he has chipped in with 12 goals and three assists in that time. The £106,000-a-week attacker's current deal expires at the end of this season and it looks almost certain that he will move on to pastures new at that point, in order to be a regular elsewhere.

With Wolves likely to be looking at bringing in new signings in the attacking third this summer, it looks as though the Madrid could be a potential option to strengthen Julen Lopetegui's team.

Are Wolves interested in signing Diaz?

According to Mundo Deportivo [via Sport Witness], Wanderers have "appeared" as potential suitors to sign Diaz in the summer window, with Lopetegui knowing the player well from his stint as Madrid boss in 2018.

It is stated that the Wolves boss could "meet again" with his former player, with a free transfer in the offing. The one-cap Dominican Republic international is set to make a decision over his future soon.

Diaz could be an intriguing signing by Wanderers at the end of the campaign, with his pedigree undeniable, considering he has represented Europe's most successful club for a number of years now. He is now a two-time Champions League winner, not to mention also winning three La Liga titles, among numerous other trophies in his career.

The fact that Wolves would be able to sign him for free makes the transfer far less of a risk, too, should the move not work out, even though he could demand high wages. Wolves have been too goal-shy throughout this season, only scoring 31 times in 37 Premier League games in 2022/23 to date, with Daniel Podence and Ruben Neves the joint-top scorers in the division with just six goals apiece.

Spurs Make Contact With ‘Perfect’ 4-3-3 Manager

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly made an approach for out-of-work boss Luis Enrique, with the former Spain head coach among the candidates to fill the managerial void in north London.

What's the latest on Enrique to Spurs?

According to the Telegraph, Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has already 'made contact' with the 53-year-old regarding the prospect of taking charge next season, with a successor to former boss Antonio Conte yet to be named with the end of the season fast approaching.

The report suggests that despite those talks with the Spaniard, however, there has been no update regarding any 'significant progress', with the Lilywhites also looking at Feyenoord tactician, Arne Slot.

In the case of Enrique, there have been previous claims that the Gijon-native – who left his post with La Roja following the World Cup in Qatar – could well help to tempt Tottenham talisman Harry Kane to stay put at N17.

Would Luis Enrique be a good appointment for Spurs?

The north London outfit only recently suffered a blow after reported target Xabi Alonso revealed his desire to stay put at current side, Bayer Leverkusen, with the 41-year-old having been hailed as a "forward-thinking" manager who could well have brought "fresh ideas" to the club, as per journalist Pete O'Rourke.

Moving for Alonso's compatriot in the form of Enrique could well prove something of an upgrade, however, with the latter man arguably a far more successful and experienced coach.

Lauded as the "perfect" manager by former Barcelona teammate, Pep Guardiola in the past, the one-time Celta Vigo and Roma boss has proven himself capable of claiming silverware throughout his managerial career to date, memorably winning the treble back in 2015 during his time at Camp Nou.

Luis Enrique

That stunning 2014/15 campaign ultimately saw the 4-3-3 boss named as FIFA World Coach of the Year, with it likely to prove a real coup if Spurs can tempt such a high-profile figure to join them this summer.

That wealth of winning experience is in stark contrast to that of Alonso, with the exciting, up-and-coming coach having managed just over 30 games at senior level to date, after taking charge of the Bundesliga outfit in October.

The former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder certainly has "all the conditions to be a very good coach" – according to Jose Mourinho – although Tottenham may be craving a more ready-made figure, like Enrique, who can make an impact immediately.

As ex-Anfield star Luis Garcia stated earlier this year, Enrique "has got everything to be a success" in north London, with the 44-year-old going on to state that:

“He’s got that energy, he’s got that attitude. He’s ready to fight, I think he’s got the experience to build something very unique there at Tottenham so he could be a fantastic choice."

As such, while it may have been frustrating to see Alonso snub the chance of a return to England, Enrique would certainly be a fine alternative and upgrade for Levy.

Ombudsman asks Vengsarkar, Amre to respond to conflict allegations

Justice (retired) AP Shah, the BCCI ombudsman, has asked the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) vice-president Dilip Vengsarkar and managing committee member Pravin Amre to respond to allegations of conflict of interest relating to their coaching assignments. While Vengsarkar and Amre have been asked to respond by June 1, the BCCI has been asked to reply by May 24.The complaint has been filed by Nadeem Memon, a former curator of the Wankhede Stadium and a former managing committee member of the MCA. In Memon’s complaint, accessed by ESPNcricinfo, he has contended that Vengsarkar and Amre were in conflict by virtue of their roles as National Cricket Academy (NCA) director and Delhi Daredevils assistant coach respectively. He also pointed out that Vengsarkar ran a private academy.”I would like to bring to your notice that Vengsarkar runs a cricket academy for junior cricketers in Mumbai and Pune,” Memon wrote. “It baffles me that how it is not a conflict of interest despite Vengsarkar not making any financial gains from his post as NCA director.”Although Vengsarkar has agreed to do the NCA job honorary, it would dangerous to ignore the conflict of interest. The former India skipper can very well favour boys from his academy at the NCA. There is no guarantee that Vengsarkar wouldn’t be tilted towards Mumbai players.”Vengsarkar was appointed as NCA director last November, while Amre joined Daredevils ahead of the 2015 IPL season. It is understood the BCCI has asked the MCA’s officials, members and coaches to submit declarations relating to any possible conflict of interest relating to their roles.
