Wolves struck gold on Jose Sa

When Wolverhampton Wanderers sold Rui Patricio to AS Roma last summer, the Molineux faithful may have been worried about who would be a suitable long-term replacement for the Portuguese goalkeeper.

The 34-year-old became one of the club’s big statement signings when they were promoted to the Premier League in 2018 and went on to make 127 appearances, keeping 37 clean sheets in the process.

Bruno Lage has hit the jackpot on his replacement, however, with Jose Sa impressing so far during his spell at the club.

Wolves hit the jackpot with Sa

A £6.25m deal was agreed between Wolves and Olympiacos for the transfer of the Portuguese goalkeeper following Patricio’s departure last summer and his arrival has made the Old Gold all but forget about their former ‘keeper.

The £29k-per-week shot-stopper made 37 appearances in his debut campaign, keeping 11 clean sheets as Wolves finished in the top half of the table.

Three further clean sheets have followed this season, although the club’s goalscoring woes have continued, netting only three times as they sit near the relegation zone.

Lage has gotten the best out of Sa, allowing him to make a seamless transition to the English game and this has been rewarded with a string of solid performances. His value has also skyrocketed too, with CIES Football Observatory valuing the goalkeeper at €20m (£17.8m) – an increase of 165% in just over a year.

It was an excellent move by Lage to bring him to the club and if he continues to perform like this, then there is no reason to suggest why his value cant increase over the next couple of seasons.

Former Old Gold keeper Matt Murray lavished praise on Sa following a victory over Everton last season, saying:

“I’ve been really impressed with Sa. I liked what he had done for Olympiacos, and thought he did really well for them, and it was interesting to see how he came in and stepped into Rui Patricio’s shoes.

“He’s very good with his feet and is very composed, and Wolves want to have more possession and play with a higher line, and he’s that dominant goalkeeper. I’ve been really impressed and by all accounts from the lads, he’s a proper top guy, a real character and good in the dressing room.”

As Wolves’ attacking options continue to flatter to deceive, it’s a good job Sa is constantly saving them from even more misery.

West Ham: Newman makes deadline day move for Doherty

West Ham United and head of recruitment Rob Newman by extension have made a surprise deadline day move for rival Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty.

The Lowdown: Hammers keep busy…

The Hammers and manager David Moyes are keeping busy on this deadline day with reports suggesting they’re closing in on a move for Southampton defender Jan Bednarek.

This comes after West Ham’s plentiful transfer business already this summer, including a club record deal for Brazil international Lucas Paqueta from Lyon.

Alongside the South American, Alphonse Areola, Nayef Aguerd, Flynn Downes, Gianluca Scamacca, Maxwel Cornet, Thilo Kehrer and Emerson have all put pen to paper on moves to Rush Green with reports suggesting they are hunting for even more.

The Latest: West Ham make Doherty move…

Indeed, according to reports, Premier League rival full-back Doherty is now on the agenda of West Ham.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-news-4/” title=”West Ham latest news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Jack Rosser, formerly of The Evening Standard, claims the Irons have made contact over the Republic of Ireland international.

He explained:

“West Ham’s loan move for Jan Bednarek is close with Craig Dawson set to join Wolves.

West Ham also looking at trying to do a right-back today and have asked Tottenham about a loan for Matt Doherty, seems unlikely at the moment though.”

The Verdict: Keep pushing?

Doherty was revered for his climb back into Antonio Conte’s plans last season, even being hailed as ‘superb’ by teammate and defender Ben Davies.

The 30-year-old attracted real praise for some of his 2021/22 performances before a season-ending injury, leaving little wonder West Ham have taken an interest.

Depending on developments, Doherty could actually be a great right-back candidate for Moyes at minimal cost, considering he has fallen behind Emerson Royal in the pecking order at N17.

Wolves ace Coady wants Everton move

Everton and by extension Director of Football Kevin Thelwell are reportedly now ‘confident’ in signing Conor Coady ‘quickly’.

The Lowdown: Onana and Gueye in…

The Goodison Park outfit are reportedly close to finalising a double swoop for central midfielders Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye, who would be their fourth and fifth signings respectively after bringing in James Tarkowski, Ruben Vinagre and Dwight McNeil.

With midfield covered, they can now look at strengthening other areas of the pitch, as Frank Lampard looks to get his full squad together before the transfer window closes.

The Latest: Coady to follow?

Taking to Twitter, journalist Fraser Fletcher has revealed that Coady has now told Wolves that he ‘would like’ to move to the Toffees, adding that they are ‘confident’ of striking a deal ‘quickly’:

“Conor Coady has told Wolves he would like move to Everton. Wolves are willing to sell the club captain and Everton confident of striking deal quickly.”

The Verdict: Exciting

These are exciting times for Blues supporters, as they finally look to be doing some serious business in the market by adding Coady on top of what they already have.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/everton-news-7/” title=”Everton news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Being the Wanderers’ club captain with over 150 appearances in the Premier League, the 29-year-old would add a lot of leadership and experience in the squad, and in a World Cup year, he will no doubt be extra motivated to perform and get into Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Some supporters may be hesitant of the move given that Coady played for arch rivals Liverpool as a youngster, but there is no doubt that he would be a good signing for EFC.

Sunderland may sign goalkeeper + Simms

Journalist Alan Nixon has revealed that Sunderland could now sign another goalkeeper.

The Lowdown: Simms to sign?

It has been reported that Everton striker Ellis Simms will sign for the Black Cats on loan as early as today, as they continue their spending spree having already captured deals for Daniel Ballard, Leon Dajaku, Jack Clarke, Aji Alese and Alex Bass.

They have been linked with a move for former Premier League goalkeeper turned free agent Joel Robles, so their incomings may not stop there.

The Latest: Another goalkeeper?

Replying to a supporter on Twitter asking if the Wearside club are looking to bring in another goalkeeper, Nixon said:

“Possible…but where does that leave Patterson?”

The Verdict: Focus on other positions

The Stadium of Light outfit have already brought in a new goalkeeper in Bass, and with Anthony Patterson in the squad as well, they do not really need to be signing anyone else in that position for now.

Instead, they could strengthen in the left-back, defensive and attacking midfield positions, as they appear short in those areas of the pitch.

Nonetheless, if Neil can bring in all of his targets, including another attacking option in Simms, then SAFC could then turn their attentions to signing another ‘keeper to cover for Patterson and Bass, with Robles one that looks to be on their radar at the moment.

Liverpool eyeing Jude Bellingham agreement

Liverpool are reportedly making strong progress regarding the potential signing of Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham in the summer of 2023.

The Lowdown: Bellingham staying put

The midfielder is arguably one of the most exciting English players of his generation, already growing into a key figure for Dortmund at the age of just 19.

Bellingham has 90 appearances to his name for the Bundesliga giants and has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool in recent months, but to no avail as of yet.

The 19-year-old will instead remain at Dortmund for another season before almost certainly moving on next summer.

The Latest: Exciting update emerges

According to Football Insider, Liverpool are ‘putting in place an agreement’ to sign Bellingham in 2023 as they attempt to acquire his signature 12 months in advance, as was the case with Naby Keita.

The England gem has been ‘identified’ by the Reds’ recruitment team as someone who can take Jurgen Klopp’s side up another level, such is his quality.

[freshpress-quiz id=“398089″]

The Verdict: Makes complete sense

This is fantastic news for Liverpool if true, with Bellingham someone who looks like a prototype of a Klopp midfielder, possessing technical ability, power, intelligence and versatility. He averaged 1.6 tackles and 1.7 dribbles per game in the league last season.

With Jordan Henderson 33 by the time the 2023/24 season starts and doubts still surrounding Keita’s consistency, the Dortmund gem could be the ideal player to come in and fill the right-sided central midfield role at Anfield for many years to come.

[freshpress-poll id=“399042″]

While it would have been exciting to see Bellingham arriving at Liverpool this summer, Klopp has enough options in midfield currently, so snapping up the 19-year-old in advance is the next best thing, with the Reds seemingly closing in on an agreement for the teenager.

Wolves set to miss out on Joao Palhinha

After weeks of speculation about a potential transfer, Wolves have seemingly missed out on signing Sporting Lisbon midfielder Joao Palhinha, with the latest reports suggesting that he is set to join Fulham.

What’s the word?

Wolves were reportedly on the brink of signing the Portugal international last month but have seen their move for the 26-year-old hijacked by the Cottagers, with the promoted Londoners clearly the more decisive of the two clubs in any negotiation process.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Palhinha will now make the move to Craven Cottage rather than to Molineux this summer, as he wrote on Twitter: “Done deal, confirmed. João Palhinha joins Fulham as expected – contracts now signed between clubs for €22m total fee, add-ons included.”

Supporters will be livid

Wolves are still yet to make a new signing this summer, and with the players now back for pre-season, supporters may well be concerned that the Old Gold will be ill-prepared for the new campaign.

Considering how long the Palhinha links have been going on, fans will surely have been hoping that a deal could have been concluded, but Bruno Lage’s side have lost out in the negotiations to promoted Fulham, which undoubtedly comes as a blow to the Molineux boss.

The 26-year-old could have offered some real physicality in Wolves’ midfield, as last season saw him average three tackles per game in the Portuguese top-flight, more than any Old Gold player managed in the Premier League.

Palhinha’s 7.03 average rating from WhoScored was also better than any player in Lage’s squad last term, so he is clearly in confident form and would definitely have added some quality at Molineux.

With the futures of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves at the club still in doubt, midfield reinforcements should be a priority for Wolves this summer, and Palhinha certainly would have fit that bill.

Therefore, supporters will surely be fuming that a deal could not be done for Palhinha, and if he goes on to be a success at Fulham next season, letting the Cottagers win the race could prove to be a big mistake by the Wolves board.

Liverpool interested in Mattthijs de Ligt

Liverpool are among the clubs interested in signing Juventus defender Matthijs De Ligt, according to a report from Calciomercato.

The lowdown: Rise to stardom

A product of the famed Ajax academy, he made a big-money move to Juventus in 2019 having flourished in the Dutch youth system and after 117 senior outings for the Eredivisie champions, and he has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Signed for an initial £67.8m (Sky Sports), the towering Dutchman has since made 117 appearances for the Serie A giants and played an integral role in the team which lifted the top-flight title in 2019/20.

Amidst protracted contract renewal discussions, it now appears as though potential suitors are positioning themselves to strike, with the Reds not willing to be left behind…

The latest: Liverpool linked with De Ligt

As per Calciomercato, Liverpool ‘should not be overlooked’ as the 22-year-old attempts to resolve his future, with Chelsea also attentive.

It’s claimed that the 37-cap Netherlands ace – who took the captain’s armband for the national team in the absence of Virgil van Dijk – wants to lower his release clause to €80m (£69m), whilst Juventus are looking to place a €140m (£120m) clause on the head of one of their most prized assets.

The report stated that the Anfield club are ‘considering the idea’ of pairing Van Dijk with the man hailed as ‘world class’ by journalist Jerry Mancini after a standout display against Austria at Euro 2020, during which the Juventus centre-back made three clearances, won three ground duels and completed each of his 40 passes in a 7.40 Sofascore rated performance.

The verdict: Worthwhile headache

Already boasting a well-stocked central defensive department containing Van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip and Joe Gomez, adding De Ligt to the ranks would undoubtedly give Jurgen Klopp a huge selection dilemma.

However, opportunities to sign such prodigious talents don’t present themselves often, and the 6 foot 1 star would be a game-changing capture even with the existing strength in depth at Klopp’s disposal.

De Ligt scored three times in 42 appearances across all competitions last term, earning a 7.07 Sofascore rating whilst winning 4.6 duels and making 3.1 clearances per Serie A match – equalling Liverpool’s top performer and compatriot Van Dijk when it comes to clearances per game.

Possessing a wide range of impressive attributes, along with outstanding leadership qualities for a player still so young, De Ligt has the ability to thrive under Klopp’s methods and slot into the first team immediately as well as potentially being viewed as the long-term successor to Van Dijk.

Therefore, signing the powerful Dutch defender should be considered more than just a luxury for Julian Ward and FSG, particularly should the out-of-favour Gomez decide to seek more regular first-team football elsewhere this summer.

Gerrard wants top Villa targets in quickly

With Aston Villa finishing the Premier League season in a disappointing 14th place, it hasn’t exactly been the start that Steven Gerrard would have wanted when he took the reins last November, arriving from Rangers after he had revived the Glasgow club’s fortunes.

There has been some positives along the way, though, especially in the transfer market. The 41-year-old reunited with former Liverpool team-mate Philippe Coutinho, signing the Brazilian on a permanent deal from Barcelona after he impressed on loan in the Midlands.

Gerrard has also signed Diego Carlos and Lucas Digne as he aims to build his own squad ahead of a massive season for the club, and there is more news which will be sure to delight the supporters.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has claimed that the Villa manager wants to get his top targets into the club before pre-season.

The journalist told GIVEMESPORT: “I think that he wants that sorted before they get to pre-season so that he’s got the base and the spine of his team there. So, then he can work around and add a couple of little flair players or bits and pieces that can finish off the job.”

Villa fans will love it

Villa supporters will be delighted to hear that, much like at Rangers, Gerrard wants to have his incoming transfer business sorted as soon as possible to give players the best chance of bedding into the squad well before the start of a new season.

With Coutinho, Carlos and Boubacar Kamara already added to the Villa squad for next term, the 41-year-old doesn’t appear to be stopping there.

Interest in Rangers defender Calvin Bassey could enhance their defence, and a move for another former Anfield team-mate in Luis Suarez could be a massive move due to his tremendous scoring record and the chance to land him on a free transfer from Atletico Madrid.

Potentially adding these two players after the business that Gerrard has already done could be vital in terms of Villa challenging for a European spot next season, which must be their aim.

There is certainly no shortage of backing from Johan Lange, and if the manager gets it right, Villa could be a force to be reckoned with next season.

VAR considered at Sunderland v Wycombe

Sunderland journalist James Copley has now revealed some big news ahead of their League One play-off final against Wycombe Wanderers next week.

The Lowdown: One game away

After knocking out Sheffield Wednesday over two legs in the play-off semi-final, Alex Neil knows that his team are only one game away from Championship football.

Beating Wycombe will be an uphill battle though, as they knocked out third-placed MK Dons, and of course were promoted themselves a couple of years ago, with much of the squad who know what it takes still in tact.

The Latest: VAR considered

Taking to Twitter, Copley of The Sunderland Echo has revealed that goal-line technology will be used at Wembley Stadium for the clash, and VAR is ‘under consideration’:

“Goal-line tech to be used during Sunderland-Wycombe at Wembley. Understand no decision on VAR yet but it is under consideration.”

A final decision on the use of VAR is set to be made later this week.

The Verdict: Use it

Yes, VAR has not been used for the entirety of the League One season, but this is too huge an occasion to sacrifice accuracy for consistency – there is no reason not to make use of it.

It has been suggested that the clubs competing in the Championship play-offs would welcome the use of VAR, and so this should trickle down to both League One and League Two.

Nonetheless, the technology is simply there to help the referees get the right decisions, and with so much at stake, they should be given every tool possible to do so.

Has Ravindra Jadeja become undroppable in white-ball cricket?

The question is whether the allrounder can keep his place if India decide to play an extra pacer

Karthik Krishnaswamy28-Jan-2020Global cricket tournaments have a way of shaping teams’ priorities. At the 2017 Champions Trophy, India realised they simply weren’t picking up enough middle-overs wickets. After the tournament, they swapped the fingerspin of Ravindra Jadeja and R Ashwin for the wristspin of Kuldeep Yadav and Yuzvendra Chahal. By the time the 2019 World Cup rolled round, Kuldeep and Chahal had more or less solved India’s middle-overs issue, but in doing so had become part of a new problem: they lacked the batting ability of Jadeja and Ashwin, and India now had a long tail that forced the top order to bat more conservatively. It was a trade-off India were initially willing to make, and they picked both Kuldeep and Chahal in their first seven matches of the World Cup.But that seventh match, against England, told India that the ploy was cramping their batting approach to an unmanageable degree. Kuldeep and Chahal went for a combined 1 for 160 from their 20 overs. More damagingly, India were so mindful of their lack of depth that they adopted a safety-first approach in a chase of 338, and towards the end chose to play for net run-rate rather than have a proper crack at the target.India’s frontline bowlers in that match, apart from the two spinners, were Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah – four No. 11s, or No. 10s at best. As good as each of them might be with the ball, India decided they could no longer play all of them together.ALSO READ: Rishabh Pant’s wildly fluctuating fortunes since 2018India have played 12 ODIs since then, and they have picked only one wristspinner – usually Kuldeep – in each of them. Jadeja went to the World Cup as a back-up option and ended it with one of the most heroic ODI performances in a losing cause, in the semi-final against New Zealand; he’s now become an integral part of the team once again, featuring in each of India’s last 11 ODIs.India’s recognition of batting depth as a non-negotiable has also coincided with the start of their preparations for the T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia later this year. Soon after the World Cup, India rested both Kuldeep and Chahal from their T20I squad, and turned instead to spin-bowling allrounders: Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Krunal Pandya. The two wristspinners have since returned – with Chahal getting the bulk of the games – but the emphasis on batting depth hasn’t gone away. The thinking is clear. With more depth, India want to free their batsmen up to take more risks. It’s how most of the best T20 line-ups bat, but it’s an approach India have resisted for a number of years, partly because they haven’t always had the personnel to pull it off. They’re trying it now, with mixed results -there has been resounding success, as in Mumbai against West Indies, and there have been times where it’s gone horribly wrong, as in Bengaluru against South Africa – and they will keep trying it over the coming months.

Will Jadeja play as the lone spinner, ahead of the wristspin options, if India play an extra fast bowler? It’s hard to say, but he’s made himself just as hard to leave out.

For most of this time, Hardik Pandya has been out of the side, undergoing and then recovering from back surgery, leaving India to force-fit other allrounders into his No. 7 role, in both ODIs and T20Is. Jadeja has usually been that man. Out of nowhere, he’s become one of India’s most important white-ball cricketers. The new Jadeja isn’t too far off the old one: a match-winner on slow, grippy surfaces (as he showed in the second T20I in Auckland) with the defensive skills and smarts to bowl economically on flatter pitches; a gun fielder; and a lower-order batsman who does a useful job in an area where India lack other options. In Test cricket, Jadeja’s batting has undergone a transformation so radical that he’s now a legitimate No. 6 in Indian conditions. In the shorter formats, he doesn’t quite have the power or range of others who play his role, such as Colin de Grandhomme, Andre Russell, or indeed Pandya.Consider these numbers. Of the 13 batsmen to have scored at least 100 ODI runs at No. 7 since the start of 2019, Jadeja has the fourth-worst strike rate, and only one six in 132 balls. In the same period, of the 36 batsmen (all positions) with at least 50 runs in the last five overs of ODI innings, Jadeja has the third-worst strike rate.Ravindra Jadeja’s 59-ball 77 nearly took India into the World Cup final•Getty ImagesBut India won’t judge Jadeja’s output based on those numbers. They’ll note that he’s contributed almost every time he’s been asked to bat in ODIs (he’s hardly been required to in T20Is), following up his incredible 59-ball 77 in the World Cup semi-final by scoring 121 runs off 116 balls in his next six innings, with four not-outs in the mix. They will note that he joined Virat Kohli at 228 for 5 against West Indies in Cuttack, with 88 needed off 67 balls, and scored an unbeaten 39 off 31, finishing the job in Shardul Thakur’s company. His bowling, meanwhile, has been routinely excellent. Since his return to the side in India’s last league game of the World Cup, he has been their second-most-economical regular bowler, behind Bumrah, and if his average of 40.90 doesn’t look too flash, it’s still significantly better than those of Kuldeep (46.60) and Chahal (47.50).In T20Is, he’s been India’s most economical bowler since the end of the ODI World Cup, his economy rate of 6.34 putting to shade that of Chahal, who’s gone at 8.83 in the same number of games (eight). It must be remembered, though, that Jadeja hasn’t bowled in the Powerplay at all in this period, and only three overs at the death (16-20), while Chahal has bowled three overs in the Powerplay and seven at the death.Given all this, this is the question that remains to be asked: what happens when Pandya returns? If India play two spinners, Jadeja is certain to keep his place in the ODI side, at No. 8, and will likely contest the same role in T20Is with Washington, depending on the number of right- and left-handers in the opposition line-up.But will Jadeja play as the lone spinner, ahead of the wristspin options, if India play an extra fast bowler? It’s hard to say, but he’s made himself just as hard to leave out.
