Manchester United working on Vanderson move

Manchester United are looking to finalise a 2023 deal for AS Monaco defender Vanderson.

The Lowdown: Vanderson profiled

Vanderson is primarily a right-back who can also play further forward as a right-midfielder or right-winger. The 21-year-old only joined Monaco at the beginning of the year but has made 33 appearances for the French side.

Valued at a career-high £16.2m by Transfermarkt, the full-back has been labelled as a player that is ‘good at taking set pieces’, and he appears to be of real interest to those at Old Trafford.

The Latest: United links

Sports Witness relayed an update from Wednesday’s edition of Sport regarding Vanderson and United.

They claim that the Red Devils have ‘already begun to move to try to tie up’ Vanderson’s services, with the 2022/23 campaign thought to be the player’s final year with Monaco.

The Verdict: Busy January?

It looks as if United officials could be in for an extremely busy New Year when it comes to further additions to Erik ten Hag’s squad. The United manager reportedly wants a right-back, midfielder and centre-forward in January.

Contact has been made with the representatives of Benfica forward Goncalo Ramos, while Ten Hag also wants Leicester midfielder Youri Tielemans, so Vanderson appears to be the third real target over the coming months.

Emmanuel Longelo close to West Ham exit

West Ham United left-back Emmanuel Longelo could be set to leave the club this summer, according to ExWHUemployee.

The Lowdown: Forest move prevented

The 21-year-old is an integral part of the Irons’ U23s side, but has yet failed to make an impact on the senior first-team and the Premier League.

Nottingham Forest came close to signing the defender back in January, but the deal fell through as a result of him sustaining a back injury.

Following a fresh update though, it looks like the full-back could now be on the move once again, with an exit edging ever closer.

The Latest: Longelo departure likely

Asked by a fan on Twitter why Longelo wasn’t involved in West Ham’s Europa Conference League match-day squad against Viborg on Thursday, ExWHUemployee replied:

“Soon to leave the club I think.”

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-latest-updates-2/” title=”West Ham latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Keep him

Whilst Longelo hasn’t got any experience playing at the highest level, David Moyes should think about keeping him for the season ahead.

The Scotsman has so far failed to sign a new left-back in the market, leaving Aaron Cresswell as the only available option on that flank.

Having registered five assists in 18 appearances for the U23s last season, Longelo would provide a more youthful option and cover for the Hammers veteran, so this should be a decision that is carefully reconsidered before the end of the month.

Arsenal enquire about West Ham star Jarrod Bowen

West Ham United have received an enquiry from Premier League rivals Arsenal regarding the availability of star player Jarrod Bowen, according to football.london.

The Lowdown: Bowen’s fantastic season

The right winger made a name for himself in the English top-flight last season after putting on a number of emphatic displays which saw him bag 12 goals and 12 assists for the Irons.

He led from the front in the Hammers’ unbelievable Europa League campaign, before the side bowed out to Eintracht Frankfurt in the competition’s semi-final.

As a result, he received a well-deserved call-up to the England national team in June 2022, for whom he has already made four appearances.

The Latest: Arsenal enquire

According to a report by football.london, Arsenal have made an enquiry over a potential transfer for the West Ham winger.

Bowen’s current contract runs until 2025 and the Hammers plan to offer him an improved deal at the end of the transfer window.

As per a previous report from CBS journalist Ben Jacobs, the Irons “really don’t want to sell”.

The Verdict: Bowen crucial to West Ham

Aside from his dominant goalscoring record, Bowen’s underlying stats illustrate just how important he is to David Moyes’ side.

Compared with positional peers across Europe over the past year, the 25-year-old ranks highly in several defensive metrics, leading the Hammers’ press from the front along with Michail Antonio (via FBRef).

Hailed an ‘unbelievable player’ by Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp, it is easy to see why Arsenal would be keen on adding the England international to their ranks.

However, with his huge importance to West Ham’s success, a move away from the London Stadium appears very unlikely.

Leeds credited with Maxwel Cornet interest

Leeds United have in the last 24 hours been credited with an interest in Burnley left-back Maxwel Cornet.

The Lowdown: Wondergoal at Elland Road

Cornet made the move to Burnley last summer and enjoyed a productive first season in the Premier League on a personal level.

The 25-year-old netted nine Premier League goals in 26 appearances, one of which was an unstoppable free-kick at Elland Road in a 3-1 defeat for the Clarets.

The Ivory Coast international, who can play pretty much anywhere down the left flank, now appears to be a man in demand following Burnley’s relegation, and it looks as if a move to Yorkshire could be a possibility.

According to Wednesday’s edition of The Journal, relayed by MOT Leeds News, the Whites, along with Chelsea, Newcastle and Tottenham, are all interested in signing Cornet.

They say that the versatile wing-back, who can also play on the wing or even up front, has a £17.5m release clause in his current Burnley contract and could leave Turf Moor this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-updates-6/” title=”Latest Leeds United updates!” poster=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/cropped-2022-03-10T184055Z_1834933207_UP1EI3A1FW561_RTRMADP_3_SOCCER-ENGLAND-LEE-AVA-REPORT-1-scaled-1.jpg” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

The Verdict: Interesting…

Jesse Marsch recently confirmed that Junior Firpo will be out for up to eight weeks through injury, which will leave Leeds short at left-back.

Therefore, bringing in the ‘electric’ (Andy Jones, The Athletic) Cornet could be a wise move as he could initially cover for Firpo at left-back while also providing another attacking option when the Spaniard is back.

He impressed in a struggling Burnley side last season, showing he has the quality to compete in the Premier League, so a £17.5m swoop could be an extremely shrewd move.

Leeds: Hay drops "major" transfer update

Phil Hay has dropped an update on the remaining summer transfer business of Leeds United.

What’s the latest?

In a recent post on Twitter, The Athletic journalist revealed that, following the impending arrivals of Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra, Victor Orta now has just one major target left on his shortlist ahead of the Whites’ 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

According to a number of previous reports, this is more than likely to be the addition of a new centre-forward, with the position known to be a priority for the Spanish director of football in the summer transfer window.

In his tweet, Hay said: “With Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra on the way, Leeds United find themselves in the second week of July with only one major deal left to target.”

Supporters will be gutted

While it is undeniable that the signings of Brenden Aaronson, Rasmus Kristensen, Marc Roca, Darko Gyabi, Tyler Adams and Luis Sinisterra are all extremely impressive additions to Jesse Marsch’s first-team squad, should Orta’s only further signing this summer be that of a centre-forward, the Elland Road faithful will undoubtedly be left gutted.

Indeed, with left-back very much having been something of a problem position for the Whites last season – as Junior Firpo endured a rather torrid debut campaign following his £13m move from Barcelona and Stuart Dallas picked up a femoral fracture that will see him remain out until the turn of the year – many supporters of the club, including Conor McGilligan, believe Leeds should be targeting the signing of a new player in the position this summer.

Furthermore, while Hay did suggest in a recent article for The Athletic that the club have spoken about the possibility of signing a more experienced and recognised backup to Illan Meslier between the sticks – as, despite being an exceptionally talented young goalkeeper, the French U21 international was in rather patchy form last time out – there appears to be little to no movement on this front at present.

As such, despite the impressive business Orta has already completed this summer, should the Spaniard fail to address Leeds’ lack of depth in goal and at left-back, in addition to completing the signing of a new striker, whether or not it has been a truly been a good window for the director of football will remain up for debate in LS11.

Newcastle: Gianluca Scamacca transfer news

Newcastle United are fans of Sassuolo striker Gianluca Scamacca, The Daily Mail’s Simon Jones writes.

The lowdown

Newcastle are lining up alternative striker targets after talks with Reims’ Hugo Ekitike seemingly broke down.

23-year-old Scamacca signed a new contract with Sassuolo as recently as April, in the midst of a fine individual season.

Even though he didn’t start 13 of his side’s 38 Serie A matches, the £27million-rated full Italy international managed to score 16 Serie A goals.

The latest

Jones says that Newcastle ‘like’ Scamacca as an alternative to Ekitike, but they face fresh competition from Atletico Madrid.

And even Diego Simeone’s side, who have qualified for the Champions League, may not be able to persuade the player.

‘There is a feeling’ that the centre forward would prefer to remain in Serie A.

The verdict

Scamacca scored a goal every 134 minutes last season for a side that finished 11th in the table, and that’s very impressive.

He out-performed his xG of 10.8 by a full 5.2 and while some might argue that’s unsustainable, others would simply say it demonstrates his ruthlessness in front of goal.

And to further boost his reputation, he’s racked up seven caps for European champions Italy since his first call-up in the autumn of 2021.

Stylistically similar to Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy and AS Roma’s Tammy Abraham, he’s been called a ‘complete’ striker by former Italy Under-21 coach Luigi Di Biagio.

Newcastle should do all they can to persuade him if he turns out to be available for a reasonable price.

Everton plotting move for Adrien Truffert

Everton are in need of bolstering their squad this summer following a difficult Premier League season, and now they are reportedly interested in a new target ahead of the transfer window.

What’s the latest?

According to French news outlet L’Equipe, Everton are interested in signing Stade Rennais left-back Adrien Truffert.

As per the report, the Toffees are following the player’s situation alongside West Ham United, Leicester City, Ajax and Hoffenheim this summer.

Baines 2.0

There is no doubt that Frank Lampard will be wanting to add quality and depth to his Merseyside based squad ahead of next season to ensure they don’t find themselves in another tough relegation battle and Truffert could be the perfect addition to make an instant impact in the team.

Lampard has a penchant for developing young players with Mason Mount, Reece James, Conor Gallagher and Armando Broja just four of the players the former Chelsea boss has brought into the spotlight, and the 20-year-old Frenchman could be his next youth project at Goodison Park.

By no means is Truffert inexperienced with 75 appearances in total and has been a standout player for Rennes, with high praise after his debut in 2020 from former coach Julien Stéphan who hailed the youngster “ultra decisive”.

This season the £10.8m-rated dynamo has shown his quality more than ever over his 30 appearances in Ligue 1, scoring three goals, delivering two assists and creating two big chances, as well as making 1 tackle and winning 2.7 duels on average per game, proving that he has the potential to be a threat in attacking play and offers defensive qualities too.

The young left-back could follow in the footsteps of Everton legend Leighton Baines who signed for the Toffees when he was just 22-years-old back in 2007, becoming one of the most promising left-sided defenders in the Premier League, earning 30 caps for the England national team thanks to his impressive impact at club level.

Truffert is currently in the France U21 team and will surely be hoping that he can one day break into the senior France team, something he could achieve by gaining more game-time and developing his craft with Everton just like Baines did for England.

With that being said, Lampard could unearth a great young prospect in the squad that can help him not only add depth on the left side of the squad but Truffert could also add another attacking threat in the side by emulating his success in forward play at Rennes.

Crystal Palace: Matt Woosnam drops Conor Gallagher claim

Crystal Palace journalist Matt Woosnam thinks another loan move is a possibility for Conor Gallagher next season.

The lowdown

Chelsea midfielder Gallagher has now come to the end of his season-long loan at Crystal Palace.

The Englishman played the full 90 minutes on Sunday as Palace rounded off the campaign with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Selhurst Park.

It was his 33rd start from 38 matches, underlining his value to Patrick Vieira and the Eagles.

Thomas Tuchel and Chelsea must now decide whether to integrate Gallagher, who has also spent time on loan at Charlton Athletic, Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion, into their first team next season.

The latest

Speaking in The Athletic’s Palace match-day discussion on Sunday evening, Woosnam raised doubts about Gallagher’s immediate prospects at Chelsea.

He wouldn’t be ‘surprised’ if the Blues sanctioned another temporary exit.

“I’m not sure Gallagher gets into that Chelsea team, but then perhaps they’ll set up in a way that suits him better than the slightly more defensive outlook Palace have had in the last couple of months that doesn’t play to his strengths,” he said.

“Would not be surprised to see him back out on loan somewhere.”

The verdict

Crystal Palace chairman Steve Parish has already publicly expressed the club’s desire to re-sign Gallagher for the 2022/23 season.

And that’s absolutely no surprise in light of his contribution this season. Gallagher finished the campaign second in Palace’s goalscoring charts with eight (behind Wilfried Zaha on 15) and was also runner-up in the assist rankings behind Michael Olise (who had eight to his five).

Chelsea will surely have encouraged by these returns, but there’s some pretty daunting competition at Stamford Bridge.

Tuchel primarily operated with just two central midfielders in 2021/22, and the likes of N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic, Jorginho and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are already jostling for those positions.

Kovacic is Chelsea’s former player of the year, while Kante and Jorginho have both been nominated for the Ballon D’Or.

If Gallagher winds up behind them in the pecking order, his development may slow down.

In other news, this Palace stalwart may leave in the summer.

Spurs now dealt late setback ahead of NLD

Tottenham Hotspur have been dealt a late setback ahead of tonight’s Premier League clash against Arsenal.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a report by London World this afternoon, who claims that, despite Mikel Arteta revealing that both Ben White and Bukayo Saka were injury doubts for this evening’s north London derby, the duo are now expected to be given the all-clear to feature at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Concerning the centre-back, the report claims that the 24-year-old “should be back” in Arsenal’s starting XI to face Spurs, while, regarding the winger, it is said that the 20-year-old “should pass a fitness test” ahead of the 19:45 kick-off.

That news turned out to be true when journalist Charles Watts spotted the pairing arriving at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this evening,

Conte will be fuming

Considering just how much is riding on the outcome of tonight’s meeting with the Gunners, the news that White and Saka look as if they will both make a return to Arteta’s starting XI is sure to have left Antonio Conte fuming.

Indeed, over Saka’s 35 Premier League appearances in the current campaign, the £58.5m-rated forward has bagged 11 goals, registered six assists and created eight big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 2.5 shots, making 1.8 key passes and completing 1.1 dribbles per game.

These returns have seen the £30k-per-week attacker average a rather extraordinary SofaScore match rating of 7.09, ranking him as the Spaniard’s best performer in the top flight of English football.

Meanwhile, over White’s 31 Premier League outings this term, the £36m-rated centre-back has helped his side keep 13 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.4 interceptions, 1.4 tackles, 3.1 clearances and winning 4.4 duels – at a success rate of 59% – per game.

These metrics have seen the £120k-per-week defender average a SofaScore match rating of 6.94, ranking him as the Gunners’ joint tenth-best performer in the league.

As such, it is clear to see that the respective returns of both England internationals will come as a huge blow to Tottenham’s chances of securing a victory over their rivals this evening, with anything but a win all but ending Spurs’ chances of finishing above Arsenal in fourth place come the end of the season.

What Seb Gotch's short sleeves tell us about the Big Bash

Australian cricket is an awfully serious place at the moment but the BBL can provide relief – for everyone

Sam Perry11-Jan-2019On the one hand, it may be the most provocative crime against cricket convention since Darren Gough unveiled two reverse pulls at the MCG in 1995. On the other, Seb Gotch’s daring wicketkeeper-in-short-sleeves number may just be exactly the kind of long-range troll Australia’s solemn state of cricketing affairs could do with. It’s an awfully serious place at the moment, Australian cricket. You can’t bypass an online paywall without seeing a root and branch dissection of every technical, systemic, and cultural ill plaguing the game. And well there should be – in an environment of Stefanovic nuptials, ugly gatherings on St Kilda Beach, and a Prime Minister with badly photoshopped shoes, would it kill the Test team to deliver us the opiate of a top-order hundred or two? Sri Lanka under lights offers zero guarantees. And so in the absence of multiple Smith vigils, or Warner’s Toyota leaps, we now stand on our internet porches, Eastwood-esque, shotguns aimed at anything and everything impeding Test success. Selectors. Bang. “Pathways”. Bang. Boorishness. Bang. Niceness. Bang. Reverse sweeping. Bang. Rigid orthodoxy. Bang. The ostracising of Glenn Maxwell. Bang Bang, (in Victoria, especially).Bullets have been aimed at the Big Bash this year, too. In fairness, they’ve been aimed less at the action than its placing, which does need finessing. There is a world where white-ball Paul need not rob red-ball Peter, where perhaps Test cricket has the end of the year, and the BBL owns the new. Indeed, a Christmas SCG Test, played from 18-22 December, has been mooted. If other countries can find the red-white balance, so can Australia. There are other BBL worries, too. This year the competition is longer, prompting concerns of oversaturation, or diminishing the context many believe cricket needs. Then again, in this navel-gazing moment of Australian red-ball decline, context-free cricket is great tonic. Unlike Mitchell Starc’s wrist position, we needn’t pontificate for three days, somberly stroking our chin about the Scorchers’ slow start to the season, or poor fielding. That’s because there’s no time, they’ve got another game soon, and haven’t they had a pretty good run through the last few years anyway? It’s unlikely the Scorchers will dig themselves into a hole of dejection either, the kind often seen from eleven suburban players in dirty whites on a Saturday afternoon following weekend failure. The BBL has little of that rant and rave culture, or intensity-for-show displays so increasingly seen across the Australian sporting diaspora.Kane Richardson poses for a selfie•Getty ImagesAnecdotes abound of BBL players welcoming the swap of grave, grinding four-day fixtures for the lightness of the shorter format. There’s the story of one player, closer to the start of his career than the end, reporting he was having “more fun playing cricket than ever before”. When he said it, the season hadn’t yet started. He arrived at his new group with stories of being made to run laps for two and a half hours after turning up five minutes late to a state meeting. With his new group, he trains hard, but without the crushing mental heaviness that accompanies a mistake in the long-form. He talks of enjoying playing at 7pm, which allows for a few beers, maybe more than a few, at a decent restaurant the evening prior to playing, where the team mutually agrees to blow their allocated AUD75 food allowance in the name of fun.Such a story would normally be accompanied by a tut-tut and apprehension at the behavioural possibilities stemming from the confession of consuming ‘more than a few beers’ the night before a match. Quite the reverse in Brendon McCullum’s case, whose team-mate, Chris Lynn, happily explained that the New Zealand hero’s return to form may have been inspired by “more than a few” the previous evening. The honesty, presumably like McCullum’s multiple XXXX beers, was refreshing. As one coach explained: “Cricket’s mainly about sadness, but in the BBL you don’t get a chance to dwell. People are in a good mood.” He went on to tell the story of a new player spilling a few catches early in the tournament. They lost the match. Whereas normally this player might be sulking, risking short-term coldshouldering from his team-mates, he instead noted how they welcomed him back in the change-rooms with backslaps and a short-term nickname of his own, “buckets”. It bears noting that he’s playing well now.A player from a different franchise is unequivocal when he says “for many, this is the most exciting time in their career.” In the increasingly slick production accompanying the BBL, it’s easily forgotten that many on our screens have spent their careers toiling and succeeding in hot, crowdless suburban outposts. They’re then thrusted into packed arenas, playing in front of TV audiences that approach a million.”There’s a lot of pressure,” he says, before regaling a story about fielding on the boundary in Adelaide, where “a grown man painted entirely in blue banged a drum all match and absolutely gave it to me.” The player made an excuse about “struggling with the glare,” before swapping with the least experienced player in the side. He’s since downloaded meditation apps to use before playing in Hobart or Adelaide specifically, because, in his words “I know I’m going to get hammered by the crowd.” He has played a good amount of international cricket. In the trench-warfare national arm-wrestle over Australia’s cricketing spirit, the BBL offers an unlikely light. No chest beating, no boorishness, just fun, good-spirited, skilled cricket. More than that, when you look past the bells and whistles – which aren’t for adults anyway – it’s just cricket. Much like Seb Gotch’s short sleeves, it just looks a little different.
