Sutherland, top order give Australia unbeaten Ashes campaign

Australia overhauled their target in the 37th over to send an ominous warning ahead of the upcoming World Cup

All-conquering Australia crushed England by eight wickets to complete an unbeaten Ashes triumph in the third and final ODI at the Junction Oval.Having restricted hapless England to an underwhelming 163, a confident Australia overhauled the target in the 37th over to send an ominous warning ahead of the upcoming World Cup. Captain Meg Lanning, coming off a duck, struck a commanding 57 not out off 70 balls to again underline her chasing prowess.Australia shakily chased down a paltry 130 in the second ODI but showed intent from the get go here with opener Alyssa Healy smoking a boundary off the first ball. After a scratchy display on Sunday, Healy was in a belligerent mood and smashed a trio of boundaries off left-arm quick Tash Farrant in the sixth over. She received a life on 24 when dropped by wicketkeeper Amy Jones off seamer Freya Davies’ first delivery and Healy made her pay with a thundering pull to the boundary two balls later. But Davies got her revenge when she dismissed Healy for 42 to end the 74-run opening stand, and then Rachael Haynes fell in the next over to provide England with a glimmer of hope. But Lanning and No. 4 Ellyse Perry, who made a fluent 40 two days ago, shut the door on England’s unlikely attempts at a consolation victory. Perry started aggressively and then was overtaken by Lanning, who sealed Australia’s dominant Ashes campaign in style with a six.Having claimed the Ashes outright after a five-wicket victory in the second ODI at the same venue, Australia won the multi-format series 12-4 to ensure England – like their male counterparts – endured a barren Ashes campaign.Australia, who have lost just one of their last 30 ODIs, swept the three-match ODI series and gained another psychological edge ahead of the World Cup, where the teams meet on March 5.In a familiar tale of woe, England struggled after electing to bat in sunny conditions and were bowled out for a meagre 163 in the final over. They crawled for much of the innings and were unable to break the shackles with only an 88-run partnership between opener Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver offering any resistance. The pair had given England hope of mustering a competitive total but suffered a shocking collapse of 8 for 56 after Beaumont fell for 50. In a major headache for England, their batting frailties resurfaced with only three batters reaching double figures.A ruthless Australia took full advantage and their relentless bowlers shared the wickets with young quick Annabel Sutherland finishing with her first ODI four-wicket haul. Australia’s seamers tortured England with menacing full-length deliveries while Perry continued her rejuvenation after a starring role on Sunday with 1 for 18 off eight overs.England were dealt a blow when quick Kate Cross was ruled out of the series finale with a wrist injury sustained in the field on Sunday. It was a precautionary measure ahead of the World Cup, where England will go into their title defence short on confidence after a miserable Ashes campaign.

After being dropped from the United squad entirely by new coach Ruben Amorim, Rashford had been linked to Barcelona and AC Milan before both clubs eventually dropped out of the race to sign him, resulting in the England international making the loan move to Unai Emery's team in January.

Villa currently sit ninth in the Premier League and are nine points better off than United, who have fallen to 15th in the table. Nevertheless, ex-United centre-back Varane was "surprised" by his former team-mate's choice of club.

WHAT VARANE SAID

"Staying for so many years with this level of intensity and demand, years when the overall atmosphere is often negative because performances are below expectations, it’s very, very difficult," Varane told . "For him to change his environment is positive. He is someone who loves the club and who gives everything for the shirt. But I’m surprised he’s going [to a club] so close to Manchester. I imagined him going further than a few kilometres away."

Ross Taylor: 'Any time you play India at home, you're going to be the underdogs'

It’s been a “strange” five months for Ross Taylor. Since hitting the four that made New Zealand Test world champions on June 23, he has not played any cricket. Now, as he returns from his break to begin New Zealand’s next cycle in the World Test Championship, he knows things will likely get harder for them if anything. For one, they will not be flying under the radar but come in as the champions, and they have one of the toughest assignments in world cricket to kick things off: India in India.”We can say we’re world champions now and that’s suddenly different, trying to retain it,” Taylor said. “It’s sort of a harder place to start. We started in Sri Lanka last time and we drew that series. It’s going to be a great two years I’m sure.”New Zealand will be touring India, Pakistan and England in the current WTC cycle and will be playing Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa at home. In the previous cycle, they started with a drawn series in Sri Lanka but went on to lose 3-0 in Australia. They returned home to win against India, West Indies and Pakistan and became the first side to qualify for the final after Australia’s tour of South Africa was postponed over Covid-19 concerns.Taylor believes experience will be key in overcoming the challenges of a series in India. “We’ve gone so many years as underdogs. But now coming in as champions: I guess the element of surprise is gone. But any time you play India at home you’re going to be the underdogs, whether you’re No. 1 in the world or where they sit in international cricket at the time. They are resting a couple of players but they’re still a formidable side and know these conditions really well.”The way we adapt to these conditions is going to be the key going forward. Some of the guys have played many a time here before. We’ll be looking forward to hopefully use that experience to make things slightly easier but we know it’s going to be tough.”Taylor had mixed feelings about his long break, acknowledging how crucial it is to get some game-time ahead of playing in Indian conditions. This time around even more so, as New Zealand have had to train without additional net bowlers due to Covid-19 restrictions.”When you’re coming to India you want to play as much cricket as you want and can,” Taylor said. “Preparation so far has been fantastic. [But] it’s a little bit different having no net bowlers, you know, facing our [own] bowlers as preparation. It’s been key. I have been lining up to face spinners, they bowl a lot of overs. Normally you [also] get 10-15 overs of net bowlers of spin to practice. It is slightly different but it is what it is and it’s an interesting challenge both on the field and off it as well.”Taylor has some experience playing Test cricket in the country, having been on tours in 2010, 2012 and 2016, and he has some ideas on how New Zealand can tackle India’s bowlers in these conditions.”Obviously spin plays a major part. The new ball, it can do a bit but it can also be the easiest time to score sometimes. India have world-class spinners and know how to set batters up in these conditions. For us, it’s about been able to pick up the lengths as quick as possible and trust the defence.”When there are a lot of men around the bat, it can be an intimidating place to start your innings but having said that… Getting through those first 10-20 balls is going to be crucial and it’s a bit of a cliche, but things do get easier. But no, it’s going to a big challenge for us, especially the batting unit.”After the conclusion of the ongoing T20I series, which India has wrapped up with a game to spare, the first Test kicks off on November 25 in Kanpur followed by a second in Mumbai from December 3.

– Existem avaliações e hierarquias no clube.

Roma leadership quitting as fans protest new Everton owners Friedkin Group

Whilst Everton fans will be pleased to finally see a conclusion on its way regarding their long-lasting takeover saga, The Friedkin Group haven’t exactly won over the fans of AS Roma in worrying signs for those on Merseyside.

Roma protests provide new concern for Everton

The Friedkin Group confirmed that they reached an agreement over the purchase of Everton, before a spokesperson told the club’s official website: “We are pleased to have reached an agreement to become custodians of this iconic football club. We are focused on securing the necessary approvals to complete the transaction.

“We look forward to providing stability to the club, and sharing our vision for its future, including the completion of the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.”

Everton fans shouldn’t be too quick to celebrate just yet, however. According to Forza Roma, fans in Rome have quickly highlighted some causes for concern, recently protesting against the Friedkin Group by filling Rome with posters after the new Everton owners sacked club legend Daniele De Rossi recently.

The Italian’s exit has since led to the resignation of CEO Lina Souloukou and could also lead to the departure of sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, according to Get Italian Football News, with the club’s leading recruitment figure expected to follow Souloukou out the door.

De Rossi’s sacking should particularly concern Sean Dyche, especially with replacements such as Gareth Southgate already linked with stepping in for the Burnley boss amid Everton’s disappointing start to the Premier League campaign.

Friedkin Group must get Everton fans onside

Friedkin simply must learn from their mistakes at Roma and instantly get the fans onside at Goodison Park. Like those in Rome, the Goodison Park faithful can be as ruthless as any, meaning that any hasty decisions similar to De Rossi’s sacking should be avoided unless seen as imperative. What’s more, if the Americans have struggled at the Serie A club, then Everton will be a new and tougher challenge entirely.

The Toffees have earned just one point in five Premier League games in a crash course towards relegation as things stand. Their recent trend of losing hold of two-goal leads should be a particular concern for Dyche, who has seen both Bournemouth and Aston Villa snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in recent weeks.

The first task for Friedkin must be to simply ensure that Everton’s finances are stable and in a position to avoid any further Financial Fair Play punishment. The last thing that Dyche needs is for his side to face yet another point deduction as they look to maintain their Premier League place in the battle to survive once again.

Unbeaten fifty from Luke Wood sets up potential match-winning total for Lancashire

A precious unbeaten half century from Lancashire all-rounder Luke Wood set up a potentially match-winning total at Emirates Old Trafford with Kent going into the final day of a rain-affected match trailing by 185 runs after the hosts closed on 259 for 9.Wood batted superbly throughout the majority of a third day which saw 51 overs sent down by an increasingly frustrated bowling attack unable to take advantage of the home side’s precarious position at the start of play. Both teams were forced to make changes following the overnight news that England’s entire ODI squad was to be replaced, Lancashire’s Matt Parkinson and Kent’s Zak Crawley both heading south to Bristol as a result. No play was possible until deep into the afternoon and it was 3pm when Steven Croft and Rob Jones strode out with Lancashire 108 for 5 and clutching a slender lead of 34 runs.Just nine runs had been added when Croft shouldered arms to a lovely nip-backer from Darren Stevens and turned around in shock to see it had clipped his off stump.Related

Wood came in to join Jones and the seventh-wicket pair began a mission to extinguish any hopes Kent might have had of keeping the lead to a manageable margin. By tea the hosts were 155 for 6 and looking secure with a priceless 50 partnership coming up soon after the interval.Jones was three short of his half-century when the impressive James Logan got one to spin sharply and induce an edge to Stevens at slip, ending a stand of 69 runs that had taken the lead to 112.Logan quickly added another when Danny Lamb top-edged to Stevens for 2, but the incoming Tom Hartley, who replaced the England-bound Parkinson, was able to give valuable support to Wood who brought up his half-century from 98 balls as Lancashire’s lead tipped over the 150 mark.Batting with freedom against the spin of Logan, Jack Leaning and Joe Denly, the ninth-wicket pair brought up their 50 partnership with five overs left and had extended the Red Rose’s lead to 174 when Hartley was caught at second slip by Jordan Cox off Matt Quinn for a useful 24.As if to emphasise Lancashire’s dominance, the final over of the day saw man of the moment James Anderson hit two boundaries off Stevens to finish unbeaten on eight with Wood closing on 63 not out.

Newcastle could revisit deal to sign "brilliant" £25k-p/w star in January

With the summer transfer window now officially closed, Newcastle United will be wondering what might have been and already keeping an eye on January when they could return for attacking targets.

Newcastle transfer news

Heading into the summer, Newcastle desperately needed a central defender and arguably needed an upgrade on Miguel Almiron. Months later and now outside the transfer window, they still need exactly that following a disastrous summer period.

Forget Guehi: Newcastle must now unleash their "exciting" teen sensation

Eddie Howe may have the answer to missing out on Marc Guehi this summer…

ByRoss Kilvington Aug 31, 2024

For much of the window, it looked as though Marc Guehi would be the man to solve their centre-back problem, with reported bids reaching as high as £70m. Ultimately, even at such a price, the Magpies failed to reach Crystal Palace's stunning reported £75m valuation.

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi

Oliver Glasner confirmed the news that Guehi would be staying put in one final blow to those at St James' Park before the deadline, telling the press (via Fabrizio Romano): "Congratulations to our owners because they didn't give up. He always told me that he's not pushing to leave Crystal Palace."

Then adding salt to their wounds, Newcastle also failed to sign Anthony Elanga after reports suggested they made a late enquiry to sign the Nottingham Forest winger. However, one pundit believes all hope may not be lost on that front.

Sky Sports pundit Curtis Davies feels that Newcastle could return for Elanga in the January transfer window. He said (via The Shields Gazette): “The fact that they are not going to get Guehi, they might have found that pocket of money that is available to actually go out and spend it.

"But I also think it could be a tactic to almost upset him a little bit. They could revisit it in January, because at this stage, a club like Nottingham Forest want to stay in this league, first and foremost.

“To take one of their most important players, probably their most important player alongside Gibbs-White for me, at this stage of the window, and, as we said, if they are not going to send them a player back as well, it’s impossible.

"£35million is good money, of course, but for Premier League clubs nowadays to lose one of your best players on deadline day for that, I think you would have to go probably £50million, £60million if you are going to try to get him out today.”

"Brilliant" Elanga would solve Almiron problem

Having been linked with a move away throughout the summer, Almiron is not a player who seemingly has a long-term future at St James' Park, especially after he struggled last season. The arrival of Elanga would all but end his time at Newcastle and hand Eddie Howe a much-needed upgrade on the right-hand side. Earning a reported £25,000 a week, the Swede has discovered his best form at Nottingham Forest.

Jonny Bairstow has linked up with England’s white-ball squads in Cardiff as scheduled after a scan cleared him of a serious ankle injury.Bairstow suffered the injury while batting for Yorkshire on Wednesday night against Worcestershire, pulling up after running a single. He continued his innings with a runner, making 112 off 51 balls, but did not take the field, left the ground wearing a moon boot and left his coach, Andrew Gale, fearing he might have suffered ligament damage. But after undergoing a scan on Thursday, Bairstow has been cleared of serious injury, and travelled to Cardiff on Saturday as planned with the rest of the T20I squad ahead of the series against Sri Lanka, which starts on Wednesday.Related

Marcus Rashford's new-manager bounce is nothing new – but Ruben Amorim is showing he can permanently unlock Man Utd's enigmatic attacker

The forward usually makes a fast start under a new boss, but the Portuguese coach's man-management skills could lead to a permanent revival

"From Wythenshawe and loves to fight. He’s born to play, in red and white. So listen close, it must be said. Like Manchester, Rashford is red." Those are the lyrics to one of the best chants Manchester United fans have come up with in in recent years, but within the last 12 months the ditty has effectively been on hiatus amid the stand-off between supporters and their homegrown star.

On Sunday, however, the chant was booming around Old Trafford once more as Rashford showed further signs of his revival under Ruben Amorim. The forward struck twice against Everton after scoring the first goal of Amorim's reign at Ipswich, and in just three appearances under the Portuguese coach he has as many goals as in his previous 18 games under Erik ten Hag.

Rashford looks happy again after a turbulent year, and after scoring his second goal against Everton he re-enacted his trademark celebration by pointing to his head. The gesture, which was a staple of his 30-goal season in 2022-23, had rarely been seen in the last year, largely because he had not been scoring very often (eight goals in all competitions last term). But even when he had scored, his reaction was more one of relief rather than celebrating his mentality.

Every United fan and England supporter will be pleased about Rashford's rebirth, as at times this season and last he appeared to be missing in action, his mind seemingly elsewhere. The challenge is for him to stay motivated and keep on scoring, and the early signs under Amorim are positive.

GettyFast starts

Rashford being back among the goals is somewhat surprising given his recent struggles, but the forward has a real habit of making fast starts when there is a new coach on the scene. He took the world by storm by scoring twice on his United debut in 2016 under Louis van Gaal against Midtjylland in the Europa League, and also netted a brace in his first Premier League game against Arsenal. He slowed down a bit, as was inevitable, scoring four goals in his next 15 games.

Rashford then made a strong start under Jose Mourinho the following season despite not being a regular starter. He scored three Premier League goals in his first four appearances, but then got just two more between the end of September and the end of the season. He ended Mourinho's second campaign with 13 goals and had scored only three times in five months of the third campaign when the Portuguese was sacked and replaced by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

As with Amorim, Rashford scored the first goal of a new era under the Norwegian, netting in the third minute against Cardiff City. He managed six goals in the first eight games of the Norwegian's reign, but that dream start petered out as he scored just once in the final 13 league matches. Rashford then had his best season up until that point, scoring 22 times in all competitions in 2019-20, and then 21 the following term.

AdvertisementGettyScoring in streaks

Then came the worst campaign of Rashford's career where three big factors affected his form: the emotional pain of missing his penalty in the European Championship final, the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to United and a back injury. The arrival of Ralf Rangnick did not lift his form either, and he scored just twice under the interim coach, the goals coming typically in the space of three days, as if to confirm the suspicion he was a 'streaky' player who only performed well in bursts.

Normal service resumed when Ten Hag arrived, though, as the Dutchman's first season coincided with Rashford's best-ever campaign as he scored 30 goals in all competitions, including 17 times in the Premier League. That earned the striker a brand new contract until 2028 which made him one of the club's top earners. Upon signing his bumper new deal, Rashford declared: "I’ve already had some amazing experiences at this incredible club, but there is still a lot more to achieve and I remain relentlessly determined to win more trophies in the years ahead.

"As a United fan all my life, I know the responsibility that comes with representing this badge and feel the highs and lows as much as anyone. I can assure you that I will give everything to help the team reach the level we are capable of, and I can feel the same determination around the dressing room. I couldn’t be more excited for the future under this manager."

GettyStrained relationship

Needless to say, Rashford did not deliver on that promise to keep on pushing himself. He ended the 2023-24 campaign on just eight goals in all competitions, the second-worst tally of his career. His relationship with fans was further strained by his off-the-pitch behaviour, such as celebrating his birthday after the 3-0 derby defeat by Manchester City and then missing training after going to a nightclub in Belfast and lying to the club about it.

He did not take the criticism well, sniping back at supporters through an article in and things came to a head when Rashford was confronted by a fan while warming-up for a game at the end of the campaign. The new season did not lead to much of a change in Rashford's performances, either, despite him getting an extended summer break after being left out of England's squad for Euro 2024.

But as with the previous changes in coach, Amorim's arrival has led to an uptick in Rashford's displays. In two games he has lifted his Premier League goal tally for the season from one to four, with him benefitting from the team's more attacking approach under the Portuguese.

Getty Images SportAmorim knows his history

The coach is wary of Rashford's recent history and has made some pointed remarks in a bid to keep him motivated. "We'll try to find the right solution for him, as for the other players. But he has to be Marcus, first of all, to try to return to that moment," Amorim said before the Europa League game with Bodo/Glimt. "And then he will have all the help of the staff, the club and the fans because he's a Manchester United boy. But he has to be the first one to want it."

And after Rashford scored twice against Everton, the coach resisted the temptation to lavish the forward with praise. Instead, he urged him to raise his level even higher, saying: "He can do so much. He has to continue to improve. He has the ability to do it, he already proved that, but he can play so much better like the other guys. It was a good performance, but he has to recover and start to think about Arsenal."
