Everton duo Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate lauded by Darren Bent

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Former England international Darren Bent likes the look of Everton’s new centre-back duo of Yerry Mina and Mason Holgate.

What did he say?

Everton have managed to improve across the pitch in recent weeks, having registered two Premier League wins and progressed in the Carabao Cup as well.

It seems Marco Silva is close to finding a winning formula within his team. Djibril Sidibe has started the last four league games at right-back, as has Tom Davies in midfield, whilst Cenk Tosun has played a part in the last two games also.

Arguably Silva’s best change in recent weeks, however, has been the addition of Holgate alongside Mina.

Bent told Football Insider when asked about the centre-back pair: “They’re good players, they can work together, they’re both powerful, they’re both good on the ball, it’s just about them working together to do the best for Everton football club.

“Mina is going to be seen as the more senior player, he needs to take more of a senior approach.”

Stick with success

Holgate was drafted in for the Brighton & Hove Albion trip, as Mina missed out through injury. Despite the loss, the 23-year-old impressed in that game, registering a smart assist for Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

He has since gone onto score and provide another assist, whilst keeping a rare clean sheet in the EFL Cup against Watford.

Overall, Holgate has proved his worth in each game, going from strength to strength and vindicating the decision to drop Michael Keane to the substitutes bench.

Now, it seems that Silva has built a formidable partnership without the former Burnley man and the Portuguese manager must continue with this winning formula at the back.

Steve Bruce speaks out regarding Aston Villa tenure

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Although former Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce’s time in B6 ended in somewhat acrimonious circumstances – with a cabbage being thrown at the 58-year-old prior to his sacking – the current Newcastle boss has been reflecting on his time with the West Midlands outfit.

What did he say?

Speaking ahead of the clash between his current and former employers, Bruce (via Birmingham Live) said:

“I feel I should have got longer. The team that got up is the team we practically put together. New owners came in, it’s a different ball game now. Without them Villa would be in a real dark place.”

Did Bruce deserve more time at Villa?

Having spent just under two years with at the club whilst managing over 90 league games, Bruce’s achievement in taking Villa to the play-off final – despite defeat to Fulham – was an impressive feat.

Villa lost to a better side at Wembley in 2018 – with Slaviša Jokanović’s men displaying considerably more consistency over the course of the season to clinch five more points – but the decline that proceeded meant that Bruce’s sacking was more than justified from the club’s hierarchy. At the time, Villa were 13th and had managed to win only three of 11 Championship games.

And while he claims the promotion team was the one he forged, Villa’s rise to the top six was built upon a vastly improved defence which hinged on the January arrivals of Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause on loan – both being so fundamental to promotion that they were signed permanently during the summer.

Villa finished the season with a run of five clean sheets in the final twelve games, while Smith also oversaw a run of ten consecutive victories; Bruce’s longest winning run that season was a mere two games.

Aston Villa fans respond to Jack Grealish injury latest

According to journalist Matt Maher, who writes for the Express & Star, Aston Villa will be without Jack Grealish for tonight’s EFL Cup game with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 24-year-old had to be replaced in the latter stages of Sunday’s Premier League clash with Manchester City having picked up a calf issue.

However, according to Maher, whilst the Englishman will miss out against Wolves, he could be fit to face Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

Grealish has been in impressive form for Villa at the start of the 2019/20 campaign – scoring four times and contributing four assists in 12 appearances.

And the midfielder had not missed a minute of Premier League action for Dean Smith’s side until he was replaced in the final exchanges against City.

Find out what happened when a world-record-holding freestyler attempting skills with the worst pair of boots available on eBay in the video below…

It is doubtful whether Grealish would have been included against Wolves even if he were fit, but it would be big news if the skipper missed out against Liverpool.

A selection of the Twitter reaction to the injury update can be seen below:

Michael Owen: The goal-scoring hero unloved by all

It would be ludicrous to claim that Liverpool supporters love their own more than any other fan-base. It would be entirely reasonable however to state that no other fan-base loves their own more than Liverpool supporters.

Their adoration of Mo Salah is a case in point with the Egyptian and his footballing prowess maternally embraced by the Kop. To the rest of the game he is Salah. To Reds he is ‘Mo’. Virgil van Dijk is another enthusiastically cherished and who need never buy a pint in the Merseyside area again for the rest of his days. Woe betide FIFA if they do not award the towering centre-back with a Ballon d’Or award this December for the flood of protests that will inevitably follow and this is because Liverpool fans are extremely protective of their favoured sons, revered as they are.

Looking to the recent past Luis Suarez and Fernando Torres were similarly lavished with love prior to their respective moves to Barcelona and Chelsea and if you happen to be a Scouser then such worshipping can be ramped up by the power of ten. There was Stevie G of course, and Robbie Fowler, otherwise known as ‘God’.

In May 1997 a 17-year-old striker scored on his professional debut and didn’t stop scoring for the rest of his career. In his seven years with the club he would go on to slot home 158 in 297 appearances, an astonishing haul that included a late double to secure FA Cup glory in 2001. During his time in L4, Michael Owen won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year and the Ballon d’Or, the latter illustrating on a global level he was regarded as a superior talent to Gerrard or Fowler.

Time and time and time again when Liverpool needed him he was there, popping up with yet another priceless goal; creating another priceless memory and each time, cherub-of-face he would raise both arms aloft and run to a celebrating mass. Owen may not have been a Scouser but born in Chester he was local to the area and what’s more he had come through the Liverpool ranks, smashing goal-scoring records for fun along the way.

He was one of their own.

Yet mention Owen’s name to any Liverpool fan now and note the soured expression. Three years ago the recently-retired forward was made the club’s first international ambassador and their collective appalled response to the appointment said a great deal. Twelve months later a petition began to have him removed from the post. After fulfilling every metric to be a beloved hero he is not even liked these days.

For most though it’s as if they’d just rather forget that Michael Owen wore their shirt at all.

The easy answer to explain why this is lies in the manner of his departure from Anfield in 2004 that saw repeated declarations that he planned to stay amidst protracted contract negotiations only for Real Madrid to swoop for a knock-down fee. No fan, regardless of affiliation takes kindly to that. To then make matters significantly worse Owen went on to play for Manchester United, a cardinal sin for any player with Liverpool on their C.V.

But if these actions went a long way in dismantling Owen’s pedestal there is a deeper truth that cannot be elucidated by circumstances; a truth that is much more anecdotal and reliant on personal memories. It is that comparative to other high-achieving Liverpool stars past or present Michael Owen was never really loved in the first place.

As journalist Joe Rimmer recalled in the Echo last month: “Still just 21, the world was at his feet, but one thing was missing. The love of the Kop. Chants for Owen were barely heard. Very little songs on the terraces, no matter how many goals he scored.”

“Owen never enjoyed the affection that, say, Robbie Fowler was afforded by Liverpool fans, despite his achievements at Anfield.”

Liverpool supporter and writer Henry Jackson meanwhile tells Football Fancast:

“He was certainly never idolised by the masses. In Robbie Fowler, you had a true working class hero with a great personality, who you could imagine invading the pitch as a fan in the Kop. Owen, on the other hand, felt more middle class, lacking in character and, ultimately, never a true football lover.”

“I actually think he was harshly treated at times because of these things, but he didn’t always help himself, often treating England as a bigger deal and talking more about horse racing than football.”

As someone who grew up nearby during that time I concur with all of the above and considered it odd the relative detachment and lack of connection given that the player ticked every box to have him adopted and adored.

Watch a Liverpool fan discover the internet and get a nasty surprise in the video below…

Precisely why this was leads us only to conjecture. Was it – as Henry alludes to – Owen’s personality, or lack of, that prompted an absence of adoration? Did people just get a particular vibe from him? If so that is a fascinating and rare phenomenon where achievement is not enough, particularly as Owen never bad-mouthed the club during his tenure or did anything to sour a relationship that was distanced to begin with.

Certainly Owen came across as something of a closed book, someone who seemed as clinical off the pitch as he was in the six yard box. He was after all a player who Liam Gallagher once famously described as ‘trainee CID’. And yes, there was his apparent apathy towards a sport that makes grown men cry. All of this made his team-mates relatable but Owen resemble a star employee.

And this unerring remoteness also explains why Manchester United fans never really took to him despite scoring a 96th minute winner in a derby, while among Newcastle fans his name is mud following a troubled time in the North East.

“How can a player who scored as many goals as he did be so unloved by the fans of every team he played for?” Liverpool blogger David Usher enquired in 2014 as per ESPN.

We can factor in the departure to Madrid. We can highlight Owen’s ill-judged recent comments about Newcastle being a ‘downward step’ and incorporate too the suspicion that was always going to accompany a former Liverpool player going to Old Trafford. But ultimately, harshly, it really does come down to the man.

This weekend Liverpool head up the M62 to take on their bitter rivals United.

Neither fan-base will sing Owen’s name. Both may rather forget that he wore their shorts at all.

Arsenal claims Michael Owen look like a top-four side

Michael Owen fancies Arsenal this season.Conversations seem to be focused less so on Manchester City and Liverpool this season as they are on the scrap for top four, which is refreshing for all those who sat through the insufferable fan fair during the last term. Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Leicester City, Chelsea and Arsenal are all the sides in focus this year but it’s the latter club that Ballon d’Or winning forward believes could be in for a very good chance of securing themselves a place back amongst the European elite in 2020.

And while Arsenal haven’t exactly got off to a blistering start, their form guide certainly isn’t anything to scowl at, with six wins, three draws and a single defeat to their name so far. Owen put his case across that the Gunners are the ones to watch…

Everton’s Marco Silva cost his team against Sheffield United by substituting Coleman

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Off the Bench series, which places in-game managerial decisions and squad selections under FFC’s microscope.

Everton succumbed to defeat against Sheffield United and the major reason behind that was the team’s lack of width, a problem which Marco Silva made worse with his decision to take off Seamus Coleman early in the second period.

Tactical error

Chris Wilder came to Goodison Park with a simple but very effective game plan, and despite its limitations and his own admission that his side didn’t play up to their usual standard, they still earned a comfortable win.

Everton may have had 70% possession with the game played largely in the Blades’ half, but they rarely threatened Dean Henderson’s goal and it was, in fact, a more comfortable afternoon that one might have expected, and that’s because the Toffees played into their hands.

Sheffield United packed the middle, forcing Everton wide with 40 crosses in total, but other than the full-backs and Gylfi Sigurdsson the squad lacks players capable of producing quality from out wide, as their assist record suggests, and since Bernard and Richarlison like to move inside there was a noticeable lack of width throughout.

In response to a half-time deficit it was only a matter of minutes before Silva changed things up to go more direct, making the bold decision to take off both a defender and a holding midfielder.

However, the decision to further pack the middle with the arrival of Cenk Tosun did nothing to solve Everton’s problem, and neither did Theo Walcott, who succeeded with one cross out of three attempted.

Off the bench

Taking off Coleman proved Everton’s undoing.

The Toffees lost their shape at the back and with it any fluidity they had before the break, with Theo Walcott left to operate Everton’s right flank by himself, making the defence open for the visitors to exploit with their second goal.

Other than Lucas Digne and Sigurdsson, Coleman had the most crosses of any player despite only playing 54 minutes, and he therefore provided an attacking threat for Silva’s team, thus proving the decision to take him off a puzzling one.

He also has the ability to work well with Richarlison and take up clever positions inside the opposition penalty area, using his experience and know-how to good effect, and that was highlighted by the fact he made more successful dribbles than any of his teammates with six.

Walcott, by comparison, failed to get into the game, making zero dribbles. He also underperformed in passing and his only noteworthy contribution was his one successful cross and two shots, both of which were off target.

Silva failed to address the flaws in his team after falling behind and instead made them worse in the second half, which shows that taking off Coleman was the wrong call to make.

Manchester United’s Paul Pogba finally breaks his silence on the racist insults that were thrown at him

[ad_pod ]

Some days have now passed since Manchester United faced Wolverhampton Wanderers away from home and drew 1-1 on the night.

And despite an overall good performance by the Red Devils, the game somehow managed to take a backseat once Paul Pogba stepped up to take the penalty and miss in the process.

Manchester United’s Frenchman was then racially insulted by some of the fans in the stands who condemned him for missing such a huge chance to help his team get all three points in the game.

Of course, many came to Pogba’s aid, comforting him and supporting him through insults that have no place in football, or the world as a whole, for that matter.

And yet, here we are. It’s 2019 and this is still happening.

Pogba has now finally spoken out about the incident, leaving a long message on his

/B1lbj5uFKaj/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link” data-lasso->Instagram profile.

He talked about his ancestors and his parents fighting and suffering only for him to be where he is right now, condemning those insults and racism in the process.

But he also stated that this will only make him stronger and motivate him to fight for the next generation, which includes his son as well.

It didn’t take long for his friends to comment, leaving their messages of support to the Frenchman.

Jack Grealish is Aston Villa’s one to watch this season

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s One to Watch series, which focuses on those players we think are particularly worth keeping an eagle-eye on as the 2019/20 season unfolds.

Jack Grealish captained his beloved Aston Villa back to the Premier League last season after three seasons in the second-tier of English football. The young midfielder was in the midst of his breakthrough years back when Villa were in the elite tier of English football, but a lot has changed since then.

What’s the story so far?

The 2014/15 campaign signalled Grealish’s breakthrough.

The Villa youngster was selected sporadically and his appearances were predominantly made as a substitute prior to Tim Sherwood’s arrival, but the new manager was eager to get the playmaker involved and he was a regular in the starting XI from April until the season reached its conclusion.

The dreaded drop did come a year later, though, as Villa, who at this point had parted with several managers, dropped into the Championship. Grealish continued to play a key role and was instrumental in their run to the playoff final that they agonisingly lost to Fulham.

However, the pain didn’t last too much longer, as Dean Smith arrived and put together a wonderful end-of-season run of form that saw the side climb into the top six – with Grealish’s influence a driving force all the while – and win the multi-million pound prize of promotion at Wembley.

What’s 2019/20 got in store for Grealish?

Grealish will be captaining a new-look squad in a gruelling and punishing Premier League campaign but the Villa star is no stranger to the demands of the top flight.

His job is not only to be the playmaker-in-chief but also to be a leader of men and his ability to influence the dressing room will naturally be a determining factor in Villa’s season.

The spotlight will be on Grealish, and that’s what makes him the one to watch for Villa.

He’s got to raise his level as both a captain and player.

He’s performed in the Championship but the question on everyone’s mind will concern his ability to emulate that type of form at the highest level?

The pressure is firmly on a young-man who’s carrying the weight of responsibility that is typically bestowed upon a player five years his senior.

Watch Aston Villa Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

What would constitute a good season for Grealish?

After returning to the Premier League you’d assume a newly promoted side would aim to consolidate their position in the so-called promised land.

However, with Villa’s summer spending sitting just shy of the £134m mark, much bigger things will be expected of Grealish and his teammates.

A good season for the local-born star would see him replicate his form from last season, lead Villa comfortably to safety and put himself in contention for Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2020 squad – if England qualify, of course.

All eyes will be on Grealish this season both inside and outside of Villa park.

A successful season would consist of (all competitions)

Appearances: 40

Starts: 38

Goals: 9

Assists: 7

West Brom fans delighted with potential Semi Ajayi signing

[ad_pod ]

Friday turned out to be quite the day for West Bromwich Albion as the signing of Kenneth Zohore from Cardiff was confirmed whilst they also reportedly agreed on a fee for Semi Ajayi.

Alan Nixon was the first to report Albion’s interest in the 25-year-old before Express & Star’s Matt Wilson confirmed on Twiter that a fee had been agreed between the Baggies and Rotherham.

A price of £1.5m seems incredibly low and as a result, it left fans of West Brom absolutely delighted with the business their club was trying to conclude.

One fan shared that it was exactly the type of move they needed to be doing whilst another called the fee daylight robbery.

A further supporter took to Twitter to claim that it was a potential bargain. One individual took a more analytical look, expressing that he was brilliant when West Brom played them away from home.

Ajayi was in superb form for Rotherham last season, scoring seven goals from midfield after being pushed into a holding role by Paul Warne.

Also boasting the ability to play in defence, his versatility is a major strength.

Here’s the best of the reaction.
