Vermeulen ton sets up tense finish

A fighting century from Mark Vermeulen looked to have put Zimbabwe A in a comfortable position, but a couple of late strikes from Mirwais Ashraf set up a tense final day in Harare.Afghanistan began the day strongly placed at 275 for 5, but were quickly skittled for 321 inside 13 overs of the day. Najibullah Zadran began two runs away from a century, but was bowled out for 99 by Tendai Chatara in the fifth ball of the day. Following Zadran’s dismissal, Michael Chinouya quickly wrapped up the tail, taking his tally for the match to six. Fazal Niazai was left stranded on 42 not out, as Afghanistan A were bundled out for 321, setting the hosts 262 for victory.Zimbabwe A lost three quick wickets in the chase, but Vermeulen combined with Regis Chakabva and Richmond Mutumbami to produce two important partnerships. Vermeulen’s association with Chakabva yielded 62, with Chakabva contributing just 19 to the partnership, while he and Mutumbami added 84 for the fifth wicket.Vermeulen eventually reached his 100, off 157 balls, and at 192 for 4, Zimbabwe A looked to be heading for an easy win. However, Ashraf dismissed Mutumbami for 41 in the 61st over and later had Vermeulen caught by Najeeb Tarakai for 107 in the penultimate over of the day.Zimbabwe A ended with 208 for 6, still 54 runs adrift. Luke Jongwe, the hosts’ last recognised batsman, and John Nyumbu were at the crease at stumps.

Nasir, Razzak look for turnaround

Bangladesh batsman Nasir Hossain and bowler Abdur Razzak have both defended their form ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 after they received criticism for their recent performances in the ODIs

Bangladesh batsman Nasir Hossain and bowler Abdur Razzak have both defended their form ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 after they received criticism for their recent performances in the ODIs.Nasir has made just 140 runs in seven innings this year, and is going through his longest streak without a fifty in ODIs, while Razzak managed just two wickets in the last three games.Nasir, though, has said he doesn’t feel out of form and he is trying to get out of a mental rut. “From where I bat, I don’t get chance to bat long,” he said. “My strike-rate has to be more than 100. If I am defending 10 off 20 balls, it brings pressure. These things happen to everyone. I have made 30 or 40 odd in the last game, but I think my form is okay.”I think I am having a good enough time. You may think otherwise. I think it can happen, not scoring runs in a few matches. I am trying to get out of this. I think the media talks more than the people. I thought ‘I have to perform, people are talking,’ so probably that put some pressure on me.”When Nasir was first picked, the then chief selector Akram Khan had said his strength was to bat according to the situation. Nasir, too, reiterated that, saying his job was to stay around till the end without worrying about goals.”I can’t set a goal. I have to think of being in the middle when 20-25 balls are left, so I have to keep focusing on that,” he said. While Nasir’s lack of runs deprived Bangladesh of strong finishes with the bat, the criticism Razzak received was for giving away 18 runs when Pakistan needed 31 off 18 balls in the chase of 327. Razzak, though, said the criticism was uncalled for.”For most of the time in my career I have bowled in the first, second Powerplays and in the last four overs,” Razzak said. “Fingers were pointed at me when I have done badly, which I think is a good thing in a way. I can understand that I am not doing it well.”If you see my past, I have given five to seven runs,” he said. “Have you ever thought we have won games because of such overs? Maybe at some point, someone could have noticed and written on it.”Razzak was confident he would continue the role of being Bangladesh’s go-to bowler in the Powerplays and slog overs. “I can get a top-edge and it can go for four, off a good ball. Shots can go over the top, but I enjoy bowling in such situations. They believe in me to bowl in those times, so I want to keep that belief.

KL Rahul resists Mumbai with unbeaten ton

KL Rahul continued to make the most of his rich form by scoring his second century this season, but Mumbai remained in control after opting to bowl on the first day in Bangalore. On a slow day that saw table-toppers Karnataka lose seven wickets, only Rahul provided resistance against an incisive Mumbai bowling attack and remained unbeaten at the end of the day.Karnataka’s resurgence in the league stage has coincided with Rahul’s form; he has contributed heavily with the bat in each of the team’s previous four matches, from which they have collected 22 points. After missing on centuries in the last two matches, Rahul was relieved it wasn’t a hat-trick of 90s when he reached his hundred with a dab to cover.Despite a number of drives and pulls, it wasn’t a flawless innings as Rahul had trouble dealing with the left-arm spin of Vishal Dabholkar. He was lucky to survive a couple of shouts for caught behind. But he held one end up to push Karnataka past 200 as Mumbai’s bowlers made regular strikes at the other.Mumbai had insipid outings with the ball in their previous two matches, but they ran in purposefully, with debutant left-arm seamer Saurabh Netravalkar providing the first breakthrough when he had Ravikumar Samarth, another debutant, edging to slip. They kept a lid on scoring and when the ball started to reverse, Shardul Thakur made it count.Thakur produced prodigious inswing and caught Manish Pandey plumb in front with a full delivery, only for the third umpire to rule it not out as the bowler had overstepped. He didn’t let it affect him and beat Pandey with another searing yorker in his next over to uproot the middle stump. CM Gautam had no answers to a similar delivery and was sent back next ball.Stuart Binny and Rahul resisted Mumbai for 28.2 overs with a half-century stand, but by the end of the day, Mumbai’s bowlers seemed to have justified their captain’s decision to field.

Henrique, pouco fez. Defensivamente, ambos vacilaram no primeiro gol da Cabofriense.

Adam Hose 95 blows away Notts as Worcestershire seal points

Visitors recover from 1 for 2 to post 206 for 5 and maintain Trent Bridge winning run

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay07-Jun-2025Worcestershire 206 for 5 (Hose 95, Kashif 51) beat Nottinghamshire 181 for 7 (Moores 39, Taylor 2-36) by 25 runsWorcestershire Rapids bounced back from a Friday night home defeat to North Group leaders Northamptonshire Steelbacks with a third consecutive Trent Bridge victory in the Vitality Blast, winning by a comfortable 25 runs.Adam Hose clocked up six sixes in a superb 51-ball 95 with Kashif Ali hitting 51 off 35 as the Rapids totalled a challenging 206 for 5 after being asked to bat first as the rain that had washed out the scheduled Blast Women’s game earlier thankfully disappeared.Tom Moores (39 off 27), Joe Clarke (31 off 24) and Liam Patterson-White (39 off 19) tried to keep the Outlaws in contention but Worcestershire’s bowlers served their team well by taking wickets at key moments, two each from Tom Taylor and Jacob Duffy, with Australian paceman Ben Dwarshius (1 for 23) outstanding at the death, conceding only 11 in his last two overs as the home side fell short at 181 for 7.Worcestershire’s total was all the more remarkable given they were 1 for 2 after seven balls as Brett D’Oliveira, stumbling out of his ground after keeping out a sharp delivery from Daniel Sams, was run out by the bowler, and Ed Pollock’s slog-sweep picked out deep backward square.Kashif’s aggression restored some order from a Rapids point of view but after hitting four fours and three sixes he perished for 51 at 74 for 3 in the 10th, skying one to long-on off legspinner Calvin Harrison. But Hose now took the initiative, clearing the ropes three times in going to 52 from 32, with Ethan Brookes backing him up with 32 from 19 before finding Sams on the midwicket boundary after the fourth-wicket pair had added 77 in 38 balls. With three more maximums, Hose advanced to within one blow of a third T20 hundred before he was leg before attempting to ramp Dillon Pennington in the last over but 18 off nine from Dwarshius took the Worcestershire total past 200 for the fourth time at Trent Bridge and the sixes tally to 11.The Outlaws chased down 227 here just over a week ago but were in trouble at 44 for 3 in the seventh. Lyndon James clubbed to mid-on in the opening over, Jack Haynes pulled sixes off Dwarshius and Duffy but skewed a slower ball from the latter to mid-off and Moises Henriques was easily stumped off former Nottinghamshire left-arm spinner Fateh Singh.Clarke’s attempt to kick-start a faltering effort brought him a second six as he slog-swept Singh but his attempt to clear extra cover saw him fall to a well-judged catch by D’Oliveira, Sams sliced to backward point and Moores fell to a similar shot, after which Patterson-White’s lusty blows proved not enough.

Watson won't play before India squad chosen

Shane Watson will not play a match in his redefined role as a non-bowling batsman before the India Test touring squad is chosen

Daniel Brettig21-Jan-2013

Shane Watson will take his first steps as a non-bowling batsman for NSW•AFP

Australia’s selectors will have their trust in Shane Watson tested by the revelation he will not play a match in his redefined role as a non-bowling batsman before the India Test touring squad is chosen.Watson is in the latter stages of recovering from a calf strain that was aggravated during the Melbourne Test against Sri Lanka, and ESPNcricinfo understands that he is expected make his return to the game in a domestic limited-overs fixture for New South Wales on January 30.The national selector John Inverarity has said that the squad for India is due to be announced before the end of this month, meaning Watson’s inclusion in the touring party would have to be made on faith rather than form and fitness.Watson trained in front of Inverarity and Andy Bichel in Sydney on Sunday and batted in the nets on Monday, but he was ruled out of Australia’s Twenty20 matches against Sri Lanka and a Sheffield Shield match for the Blues against Western Australia, due to begin on Thursday.”He had a good running work-out. Andy Bichel and I were there when he did his running drills . . . but he didn’t bat,” Inverarity said. “When we left it yesterday it was uncertain, but he’ll certainly play before the end of this month.”This means that neither Watson nor the man he has effectively nominated to displace in the Test side, Ed Cowan, will play a first-class match before the announcement.NSW’s next Shield fixture is due to take place against Tasmania in Hobart from February 6-9.Inverarity said that his panel would not be swayed by Watson’s public airing of his preference to open the batting. “Not really, no. We’ll consider all players on their merits, in a dispassionate way,” Inverarity said.”The captain always determines the batting order. We’ve had many discussions with Shane. One of the basic points is he’s always willing to play and bat where he’s asked to bat.”Another player of interest to the selectors is Moises Henriques, who is likely to be slotted into the NSW Shield team to play against WA even if his Australian duties with the ODI team in Hobart on Wednesday means he makes a delayed entry to the match.

Finn takes four to boost Test chances

Steven Finn has boosted his chances of playing in the third Test against India with an impressive display on the first day of the England Performance Programme’s game against the D Y Patil Academy XI in Navi Mumbai.Finn, who missed the first two Tests after sustaining a thigh strain during the opening warm-up match of the tour, claimed 4 for 50*, including a wicket in his first over, and worked up a considerable pace. If Finn suffers no reaction to his workload, he has an excellent chance of forcing his way into the England team for Kolkata in place of an out of sorts Stuart Broad, who has not claimed a wicket in the first two Tests.Finn bowled four spells of four overs each and left the field on several occasions, but appeared untroubled by the exertion. As well as the wickets, he struck one batsman a painful blow on the hand and generated bounce from a sleepy surface that other bowlers struggled to find.Earlier in the day England’s bowling coach, David Saker, had hinted that a fully fit Finn would prove hard to ignore for the England selectors. “If he gets through unscathed and bowls well, his name will definitely be talked about for selection,” Saker said. “He’s got that x-factor, a bit of pace, that height that always means you could get variable bounce over here. So his name will be bandied around for sure for that second seamer’s spot.”In contrast, Saker was less effusive about Broad. “There’s a little bit of an issue, there’s no doubt about it,” he said. “He hasn’t bowled as we would have liked, and he’d be the first to admit that. He’s not the first bowler to come over here and find it hard.”Four other members of England’s Test squad – Graham Onions, Joe Root, Stuart Meaker and Eoin Morgan – are also playing in the three-day match. Simon Kerrigan, the Lancashire left-arm spinner, claimed 4 for 61 with Meaker (1-34) beating the bat often without much luck. Legspinner Scott Borthwick took the other wicket.Onions finished wicketless, but conceded only 11 runs from his 14 overs which included six maidens. Later Root compiled an unbeaten 40 off 57 balls as the EPP team began their reply while Varun Chopra had been dismissed.November 27, 2.15pm: *Steven Finn’s bowling figures were corrected
