Waqar urges fielding improvement

Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has said his side needs to improve its fielding and batting against the short ball to be competitive at the 2015 World Cup

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Dec-2014Pakistan coach Waqar Younis has said his side needs to improve its fielding and batting against the short ball to be competitive at the 2015 World Cup in February and March. Pakistan lost the fifth ODI against New Zealand by 68 runs in Abu Dhabi on Friday to concede the series 2-3.”We need to improve our fielding,” Waqar said after the game. “It is not up to the mark and [we] must improve a lot. We also need to work hard on short balls as we have to go to Australia and both these things need to be spot on if you want to compete in the World Cup.” The only international games Pakistan have left before the tournament are two ODIs in New Zealand on January 31 and February 3.New Zealand scored 275 for 4 in the final ODI of the series in the UAE, with their captain Kane Williamson making 97. Pakistan were dismissed for 207 in 43.3 overs in the chase. Despite the defeat, Waqar said the series had not been a complete write-off. “We did achieve what we needed but not 100%. Now we have a one-day cup back home and hope that things will be clearer after that.”Williamson hailed the series victory as a “big achievement,” especially because New Zealand were without regular captain Brendon McCullum, and fast bowlers Tim Southee and Trent Boult. New Zealand bounced back from conceding the series lead twice before winning the decider.”There is still time for the World Cup, it’s good it will be in our conditions and this series win is a big achievement,” Williamson said. “We learned from our mistakes, beat a strong Pakistan side and have shown improvement. In a series that went up and down, it was fantastic to learn from the Pakistan side and to win in such an evenly-fought series has been great.”It was important to keep adapting our plans, the personnel changed quite a lot, we had a lot of injuries. It has been a great series, an emotional series for many reasons and both teams put on some fantastic cricket.”New Zealand will travel home to host Sri Lanka, beginning with the Boxing Day Test at the Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

BCCI seeks to limit India's bilateral T20s

The BCCI is yet to officially approve India’s Future Tours Programme for the coming cycle, from 2015 to 2023, due to their preference for one-off T20s in a bilateral series

Amol Karhadkar10-Jul-2014The BCCI is yet to officially approve India’s Future Tours Programme for the coming cycle, from 2014 to 2023, due to an issue over the number of T20s scheduled in bilateral series. The board is reluctant to play more than one T20 in a bilateral series. They had signed MoUs with all other boards over the number of bilateral series to be played over the next years on the sidelines of the ICC’s annual conference in Melbourne, but the number of matches, especially T20s, for each series is far from being final.India are supposed to play 47 T20s during the next FTP cycle, starting with the tour to Australia in December 2014 and culminating with New Zealand’s tour to India in January 2023. These 47 matches, excluding the ones during the World T20, are spread over 29 bilateral series.India’s bilateral matches from Dec 2014 to Jan 2023

Australia: 16 Tests, 33 ODIs, 9 T20s

England: 20 Tests, 22 ODIs, 4 T20s

South Africa: 16 Tests, 20 ODIs, 8 T20s

West Indies: 10 Tests, 15 ODIs, 4 T20s

Pakistan: 12 Tests, 30 ODIs, 11 T20s

Sri Lanka: 12 Tests, 20 ODIs, 6 T20s

New Zealand: 10 Tests, 35 ODIs, 4 T20s

Zimbabwe: 2 Tests, 9 ODIs, 1 T20

Bangladesh: 3 Tests, 6 ODIs

Excluding ICC events and Asia Cup

ODI and T20 numbers likely to change

However, 13 of those 29 series have India playing at least two T20s. The BCCI seniors’ wish to cut down on bilateral T20s might stem from a desire to maintain the appeal of the Indian Premier League. All the top players in India are seen in action for their respective franchises in at least 14 games per IPL season and a possible two to four additional games should the team make the playoffs. No one from the BCCI officialdom admits the fact as it is, though. Some of them stress on the fact that they don’t want “Indian players to play too many T20s, thus resulting in ODIs being completely redundant”. As a result, the BCCI will try and negotiate with seven of the 10 cricket boards for reducing the number of T20 fixtures.According to the existing FTP draft, every team barring England, Zimbabwe and Bangladesh are slated to play two T20s against India in a series at least once over the next eight years. If BCCI succeeds in its negotiations, South Africa and Pakistan will be the biggest losers. While India is supposed to play two T20s in each of its four bilateral series with South Africa during the FTP window, Pakistan are pitted against India in 11 T20s spread over five series. If the other boards cede to BCCI’s request, then there could be a minor change to the number of ODIs to be played in the series. Pakistan’s itinerary is likely to remain unchanged, since Pakistan cricketers don’t feature in the IPL and the broadcasters are likely to put their foot down. A reduction in number of T20 games in an India series, especially at home, would result in significant loss of revenues for Cricket South Africa. The BCCI have traditionally been averse to playing T20 fixtures in bilateral series. Ever since India’s maiden T20 international in South Africa in December 2006, the Indian team has played only 52 T20s and 28 of them have been spread over five World T20s.Besides finalising the FTP of the national side, the BCCI is also planning to formulate its own schedules for the India A and India Under-19 sides. The consensus among the top management of the BCCI has been that as far as possible, the junior and the A sides should tour major cricketing opposition in the months before the national team’s tour to the country. The BCCI has already started implementing the theory with India A sides since last year. Fringe players toured South Africa A before India’s curtailed tour to South Africa in December 2013. Similarly, India A is touring Australia at the moment, five months ahead of the senior side’s four-Test series. The BCCI hierarchy wants the same policy extended to the Under-19 team in order to give more exposure to talented youngsters.

RCB retain Kohli, Gayle and de Villiers

Royal Challengers Bangalore have retained Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers ahead of the 2014 IPL auction

ESPNcricinfo staff09-Jan-2014Royal Challengers Bangalore have retained Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers ahead of the 2014 IPL auction. The franchise has also announced the appointment of Daniel Vettori, who played for Royal Challengers in previous seasons, as head coach and Allan Donald as bowling coach.Trent Woodhill, who is currently David Warner’s personal batting coach, was named the franchise’s batting and fielding coach for the season.January 10 is the deadline for the IPL franchises to announce their list of retained players, ahead of the auction on February 12. Each franchise is allowed to retain up to five players and can buy back additional members of their squads at the auction via right-to-match cards. The number of right-to-match cards available to each franchise will depend on the number of players already retained. Since Royal Challengers retained three players, they will have one right-to-match card at the auction.A fixed amount will be deducted from Royal Challengers’ auction purse of Rs 600 million (approx. US$ 9.6 million, at the current exchange rate) for each of three players retained: Rs 125 million for player one, Rs 95 million for player two and Rs 75 million for player three. That will leave the franchise with Rs 305 million to spend at the auction. This season, each squad must include no less than 16 and no more than 27 players, with a maximum of nine overseas players.Virat Kohli and Chris Gayle have often won Royal Challengers games with their explosive top-order batting•AFP

The amount deducted from the auction purse is not necessarily the IPL fee agreed to between the franchise and the retained player.India’s Kohli, who captained Royal Challengers in 2013, is one of the leading limited-overs batsmen in world cricket at the moment, while West Indies’ Gayle is unarguably the most destructive Twenty20 batsman on his day. Last season Gayle slammed a world-record 175 not out off 66 balls against Pune Warriors, on his way to an aggregate of 708 at 59.00 – he was No. 2 on the tournament’s run charts. Kohli slotted in at No. 3, with 634 runs at 45.28. South Africa’s de Villiers, who bats lower down the order for Royal Challengers, scored 360 runs at 36.00. The trio forms an intimidating batting core for Royal Challengers.Former New Zealand captain Vettori, who has been plagued by injury of late, had led the team before Kohli. He replaced Ray Jennings, who had coached Royal Challengers over several seasons. Vettori’s appointment is unique, given he is still an active player – he is currently playing for the Brisbane Heat Australia’s Big Bash League. Donald, who is South Africa’s bowling coach, had worked with the now-defunct Pune Warriors in IPL 2013. Woodhill, an Australian, is a batting and fielding specialist, having worked with Pakistan and New Zealand and several domestic sides. He is credited with moulding Warner at New South Wales, and also coached the Melbourne Stars and Delhi Daredevils.”I am happy to be retained by RCB and it’s great to be back in Bangalore,” Kohli said. “I look forward to working closely with Dan Vettori. Allan Donald’s experience will add a lot of value.”

Dwayne Smith joins Perth Scorchers

West Indies allrounder Dwayne Smith has joined Perth Scorchers for the upcoming Big Bash League season

Renaldo Matadeen07-Dec-2013West Indies allrounder Dwayne Smith has joined Perth Scorchers for the upcoming Big Bash League season, becoming the second international player to sign for the side following the announcement that South African bowler Alfonso Thomas would be rejoining them.”I’m really happy to have signed with the Perth Scorchers – they look to have a great squad of players with a good mixture of youth and experience. The BBL is a tournament all players want to be involved, in so I’m really looking forward to joining the lads in Perth and making an impact,” Smith said. “Hopefully I can get the side off to a good start at the top of the order and continue on my good form from the recent Champions League in India. Perth is a beautiful city, so hopefully I can experience a bit of what it has to offer in between the cricket.”Smith has struggled to cement his spot in the West Indies team, despite being a crucial part of the Mumbai Indians side that won the 2013 IPL and Champions League Twenty20, for which he was the Player of the Tournament after making 223 runs at an average of 55.75 and a strike rate of 142.94.”I want to be part of the West Indies team that defends the T20 crown next year (in Bangladesh),” he said. “I’m looking at the 2015 World Cup, so I want to make a big impression here.”Scorchers coach Justin Langer described Smith as a welcome addition to the side, citing his stunning form in the Twenty20 matches over the last 12 months, as well as the fact that he would be available for the entire BBL season.”Dwayne is a fantastic batsman, he’s a brilliant fieldsman and he can bowl some overs, so he’s a great addition to the Scorchers,” Langer said. “He was very keen to get back to BBL so it was a pretty easy negotiation. Dwayne was high on the list, because of the challenges you have with securing overseas players.”Smith has represented Sussex, Deccan Chargers, Mumbai Indians and Barbados at T20 level. In addition, he also played for New South Wales in the BBL in 2009-10.Shaun Marsh, who also announced his contract extension with the Scorchers, was equally as pleased with his team’s new signing.”I have had the pleasure of watching him play in the IPL and for West Indies over the last few years and he certainly brings a lot of excitement to the game with bat, ball and in the field,” Marsh said. “He’s a really aggressive player and I think we will work really well together at the top.”

Compton fails on Palladino's day

England opener Nick Compton missed out on the chance to press his Ashes claims as Tony Palladino celebrated his return from injury with a four wicket haul for Derbyshire on a rain affected second day against Somerset at Derby.

England opener Nick Compton missed out on the chance to press his Ashes claims as Tony Palladino celebrated his return from injury with a four wicket haul for Derbyshire on a rain affected second day against Somerset at Derby.Compton made only 15 before he fell to Palladino, who took 4 for 75, and now has a possible three more first-class innings before the opening Test against Australia at Trent Bridge on July 10.It was another struggle for Somerset’s batsmen on a day when 45 overs were lost, with only skipper Marcus Trescothick reaching 50 as Derbyshire reduced them to 180 for 6 at the close, still 86 behind. It had been a different story at the start with Compton and Trescothick playing confidently until the first of three rain delays held up play for 35 minutes and when the game resumed, Derbyshire’s bowlers took control.Palladino had been out for seven weeks with a side strain and Derbyshire’s leading wicket-taker for the last two seasons showed how much the team has missed him when he sent back Compton with the total on 56.Compton, who had scored a century in the previous Championship match against Durham at Taunton, had failed to hit a boundary in his 70-minute innings which ended when he edged a drive and was caught by Wes Durston at first slip.Trescothick had looked in command but Derbyshire’s seamers bowled with discipline to restrict his scoring opportunities to the extent that he took 21 overs to move from 35 to 50.The game was held up briefly when one of the sightscreens was blown over before Tim Groenewald got the wicket Derbyshire wanted when Trescothick pushed at one that left him and was caught at third slip which was the first of five wickets to fall for 65 runs.South African batsman Dean Elgar looked to be set when he drove Palladino tamely to cover and Craig Kieswetter’s brief innings was ended when Palladino had him caught behind four overs later.A lot now rested on James Hildreth who timed the ball well to hit five fours in his 36 but he also fell to a poor shot when he played across the line at Palladino and was lbw.Alex Barrow also went cheaply and after a two-and-a-half hour break for rain, only three more overs were possible with Palladino having Peter Trego dropped at second slip before another shower drove the players back to the pavilion for the last time.

Crook steals lead after Peters ton

A century from Northamptonshire’s captain Stephen Peters helped them to a slim advantage at the halfway point of a keenly contested match against Kent

Alan Gardner at Canterbury02-May-2013
ScorecardStephen Peters registered Northamptonshire’s first hundred of the season•Getty ImagesNorthamptonshire may not be Division Two leaders straight out of left-field, to slip into baseball parlance, but their hot streak has caught plenty by surprise. A century from their captain, Stephen Peters, and a by-now-familiar flick of the tail helped them to a slim advantage at the halfway point of a keenly contested match against Kent, as they pursue a third win out of four that would only fuel promotion talk on the bleachers.Northants have been here before and, having missed out by a single point in 2009 and 2011, they might be forgiven for fearing what Yogi Berra, the marvellously muddled former Major League catcher, once called “déjà vu all over again”. David Ripley, who succeeded David Capel as coach last year, was involved with the club on those previous occasions but said “choking” was not a problem he is worried about this time around.”Promotion is a target we think is achievable, especially with the start we’ve made,” he said. “The belief is there that we can do it. I’m confident we can. It’s partly a relief to come out and play well, when you’ve put the work in. Having got those wins in the bank, got ourselves at the top of the table, that’s great – we didn’t envisage being where we are but we’ll take it because we’ve played well.”Ironically, Northamptonshire’s preparations for the season focused on improving a disappointing recent record in one-day cricket – an area in which Ripley felt they “had the most to gain” – and one of the signings who has done so much to help them top the table, Steven Crook, was brought in with that aim in mind. Here, Crook hit 63, his third half-century in four innings since returning from Middlesex, to go with three wickets on the first day, as Northamptonshire recovered from 150 for 6 to post 303.”It ain’t over, til it’s over,” is another Berra aphorism and one the Northamptonshire lower order appear to have taken to heart. In four first innings, their last four wickets have added 648 runs – more than doubling the score on two occasions – although the picture at Canterbury was distorted slightly by Rob Newton batting at No. 11 after suffering a groin strain while fielding on Wednesday. That meant they fielded a last man with an average of 38.95, rather than the usual 21.07 of Trent Copeland.Crook’s contribution was second only to Peters, who recorded his 30th first-class century and the first by any Northamptonshire player this season. While their bowling attack has regularly treated the opposition like skittles, top-order runs have been a little less forthcoming. In April in England, that is not altogether unsurprising but this was the third time Peters has passed fifty and his batting, as well as his leadership, is likely to be crucial if Northants are to stay the course.”He’s been outstanding, he really has,” Ripley said of Peters, who is in his first season as captain. “His example batting, you’ve only got to see how dearly he sells himself in games like we’ve seen today. He’s steely, competitive, loves it when it’s tough. He’s spoken very well with the team, tactically he’s been very good and a lot of the impetus we’ve built, he’s helped us get it going.”The engine required a little turning over at the start of the day and it would be inaccurate to say that the morning session took place under a blanket of cloud only in that a blanket suggests a degree of warmth. That didn’t stop Peters from batting in shirt sleeves and, if the goose pimples helped focus the mind, it certainly wasn’t a bad idea.Peters was involved in the two most substantial stands of the innings – putting on 63 with both David Sales and Crook – but it was his temperament and focus in the face of testing spells from Kent’s raggedy old stagers, Charlie Shreck and Mark Davies, that really set the tone.Ripley said Northants had expected a tough encounter and an important test of their credentials in this fixture and, by the time the sun finally came out in the late afternoon, they had stolen a few more bases. “We’ve always had good four-day skills,” he said. “We’ve been there and gone close before and there’s a feeling that we can be there again.”

Fleming on CSK's auction: 'We just haven't been able to get it right'

“There is a lot of responsibility and soul-searching and it certainly starts with me at the top, 100%”

Alagappan Muthu25-Apr-20253:11

Did CSK get it wrong at the auction?

Following a seventh defeat in nine games in IPL 2025, Chennai Super Kings coach Stephen Fleming traced their struggles back to the auction.”It is hard to say we got it completely right with the performances that we have had,” he said after CSK’s batting struggled once again to put up a decent total against Sunrisers Hyderabad. They were bowled out for 154 and lost by five wickets. “So we have been looking over that in detail just around our style of play. Also looking at how the game is evolving.Related

“And it is not easy. And that is why we are proud of our record today. We have been able to be consistent for so long and it doesn’t take much for it to go another way. Other teams have got better and that is the point of the auction. But we just haven’t been able to get it right.”CSK had tried to compensate for that by using players outside of their usual roles, having Ravindra Jadeja bat up the order, using Shivam Dube as a finisher, trying R Ashwin in the powerplay and asking MS Dhoni to bat a lot longer than he is able to given he is 43 years old and his knees aren’t perfectly right.”So you take responsibility from the top down and then you just ask a little more of the players,” Fleming said. “But yeah, that has to be an area where we need to reflect and say it wasn’t as good as what it could have been or it hasn’t worked out how we wanted.”Stephen Fleming felt Dewald Brevis was ‘excellent’ on his CSK debut•PTI

CSK are at the bottom of the table on run-rates and boundaries hit and are near the top of the table on dot-ball percentage. They came into this game having used 20 of 27 players and here they handed Dewald Brevis a debut and pushed their youngest ever player, Ayush Mhatre, up to open the batting. Unlike in past seasons, when CSK assembled numerous champion teams filled with players with clearly defined roles, they have been unable to settle on a combination this season.”It is also not perfect science,” Fleming said. “The auction is a very fluid beast. It’s like buying [for] 25 hours and see it come away at the end of it mentally and sometimes physically exhausted. And to be fair, I still think we have got a good squad. We are not far away.”A couple of key injuries, just a bit of a lack of form. And we have just struggled really to nail a gameplan. We’ve chopped and changed too much. I think it was trying to look for something that perhaps we felt wasn’t there. So yeah, there is a lot of responsibility and soul-searching and it certainly starts with me at the top, 100%”There is a feeling that CSK are too set in their ways – preferring experienced players, structuring their innings to start slow and finish strong – and this season might be pushing them towards new ways of thinking.”I’m a believer that the game hasn’t evolved that much,” Fleming said. “So just trying to be smart and trying to be positive and give evidence that percentages still work. But all around there is a bit of chaos, isn’t there, with teams playing well [by targeting boundaries and playing high-risk shots]. And I think I said it in a grumpy interview a few weeks ago that we’ll see towards the end of the tournament which team will come through.’When they come to play for Chennai, one of the things they look forward to is being yellow in front of a yellow crowd’•AFP/Getty Images

“And it’s an intriguing watch to see settled sides and teams with younger sort of flair battling it out and watching the cream rise. And I will watch with interest to see towards the end what the highest run-scorers are and what teams are doing well, because that’s part of the reflection as you move forward.”Some of that has already begun. “We’ve tried to bolt things on all the time,” Fleming said. “I thought Brevis was excellent today [making 42 off 25]. Mhatre has been refreshing. We’ve given guys opportunities and that’s something that often doesn’t come along in an IPL. You don’t want it to come along. It’s an unwanted bonus. So we’ll work very hard on every game to try and find some more answers for next year.”A strong crowd turned up in Chennai once again, just as they have all around the country to watch CSK play even though they have been struggling this season.”Well, we are aware of the support and it is not just at home, it extends throughout India,” Fleming said “We understand the effect that MS Dhoni has with our support, but when we see the amount of yellow that turns up game after game, certainly here at Chepauk, but when we are around the country experiencing that, there is a responsibility that we feel and it is a heavy one. And to not reward that with performances weighs very heavy on the group.”When they come to play for Chennai, one of the things they look forward to is being yellow in front of a yellow crowd and to not perform up to our expectations, but more importantly the fans’ expectations, leaves us very empty.”
