Leeds must replace Forshaw with someone more akin to Phillips

[ad_pod ]

According to Football Insider, talks have started between Leeds United and Fulham for the potential transfer of Adam Forshaw.

Due to their lack of depth in the position, the Whites should sign a new midfielder to replace Forshaw, but perhaps their potential additon should actually be in a different mould to the former Middlesbrough man.

What’s the story?

Fulham have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old for some time now, but it seems as if the deal is edging closer to completion after this latest update.

The Football Insider article states that Leeds will want to recoup the £4.5m they spent on the Englishman back in 2018.

That fee can be spent on a new man in his position, but United shouldn’t be looking for a like-for-like replacement.

More like Phillips

If Leeds are to bring in a new midfielder in place of Forshaw, then they should be aiming for someone whose style is more akin to the way Kalvin Phillips plays.

Forshaw isn’t a player who can perform in the same way as the youngster due to the physical demands of his role, but a new signing could provide further depth in his position.

Of course, it will be tough to find someone who can play like Phillips for around £4.5m as the dominating midfielder has already been the subject of a £14m bid, but Victor Orta and Andrea Radrizzani should find someone who can slot into his role when he is injured or suspended.

It’s a big season for: Davinson Sanchez

Here in our It’s a big season for feature, we’ll be taking a look as to why the upcoming campaign is so important for Spurs’ Davinson Sanchez. Of course, many fans may have had high hopes after seeing his impressive first season in north London, but things just didn’t work out for him this season and that’s something that needs to be resolved, especially with there possibly being an opening if Toby Alderweireld is to leave at any point with his contract set to expire next summer.

The centre-back looked so promising in his first season at Tottenham after a club record £42m move (as per the Guardian). Starting 29 league games, Sanchez slotted in seamlessly in a back three. Indeed, his pace, power and composure on the ball made him a perfectly rounded defender. And, he even surprised Mauricio Pochettino (as per football.London) which just goes to show how well things were going during his first season at the club.

It’s certainly been a more difficult season for the Colombian, however. Tottenham have largely utilised four at the back and with Toby Alderweireld seemingly set to stay, Sanchez could perhaps get even less minutes next season. He started just the 22 league games, with the majority coming due to injuries. Additionally, the performances he has put in have been nothing short of worrying, with his displays against Arsenal in February and Borussia Dortmund in March raising plenty of concerns on social media. If he is to stand a chance of playing any part in the future of the club then immediate improvements are required with Juan Foyth also in the picture.

Aged just 22, albeit turning 23 in the coming weeks, Sanchez has bundles of potential. Physically, he’s there. Indeed, given more time and experience in the Premier League, he could be immense, and we aren’t the only ones who think this as his former team-mate Davy Klaassen stated back in November 2018 (as per Evening Standard) that Sanchez can be one of the world’s best defenders. But next season is crucially important for Tottenham’s record signing.  Sanchez will have to improve beyond recognition to even win a place in the team next season.

Next season, therefore, represents a hugely important one for the defender. Despite his young age, a player of his quality and ambition will surely not be happy sitting on the bench for the best part of two seasons. Indeed, The Colombian’s situation could soon be made even more complicated with more competition potentially rocking up, as Spurs have been linked (as per The Sun) with a move for Bournemouth’s Nathan Ake.

With that in mind, it might be the most important campaign of his carer coming up.

Tottenham fans, have your perceptions of Sanchez changed this season? Is he good enough to become a permanent feature of the Tottenham defence? Comment below.

What a beast: Liverpool fans are loving the look of rumoured target Lloyd Kelly

[ad_pod ]Liverpool fans on Twitter like what they see when it comes to Bristol City defender Lloyd Kelly, a supposed transfer target for the Champions League finalists. The 20-year-old has made 34 appearances across all competitions for the Championship side this season, and has impressed massively.Luis Suarez certainly had no qualms about celebrating against his former employers in the video below…Kelly looks like a left-footed Joe Gomez in the way that he is tall, powerful but good on the ball as well, whilst he can play at centre-back or at left-back; he is basically the mirror image of the former Charlton man.The athletic defender has been linked with a move to Anfield as back-up to Andrew Robertson, who will be in need of a new understudy with Alberto Moreno set to leave this summer.

A video has emerged on Twitter of Kelly’s highlights from the campaign just gone, and it’s safe to say that the Reds supporters are excited by what they see.

Let’s take a look at some of the replies from the fans on Twitter…

Sheffield United: Wilder must consider a change in formation against Forest

The manner of Sheffield United’s draw against Millwall on Saturday must have infuriated Chris Wilder.

With his side seemingly heading towards victory at Bramall Lane after Gary Madine had given them a deserved lead, the Blades conceded a 95th-minute equaliser which put a serious dent in their promotion hopes.

As a result of Leeds United’s 1-0 victory over Sheffield Wednesday, Wilder’s side are now three points behind their rivals in the race for the top-two and with games running out between now and May, they are in need of a favour from elsewhere.

However, even if the Whites end up dropping points, there is no guarantee that the Blades will be able to capitalise, especially when you consider the issues they face in terms of selection ahead of their clash with Nottingham Forest on Friday. Central defender John Egan is scheduled to miss the next three matches after being sent off against Millwall whilst Chris Basham and Billy Sharp are major doubts for the showdown with the Reds due to injury (Leeds-Live).

In the absence of these three players, Wilder may be forced to change his preferred formation of 3-5-2 due to the club’s defensive crisis. Indeed, by switching to four at the back the club may lose some of their attacking impetus yet it would make more sense to do this than risk fielding players out of position. In need of a spark to get their promotion hopes back on track, the former Northampton Town boss could thrive from the deployment of a new idea in their last four games of the season.

Indeed, it would not be at all surprising if Wilder ends up sticking with the tactics which have put the club in their position that they currently find themselves yet at this stage of the year, advantages can be gained from the most unlikely of scenarios.

What do you think Blades fans? Should Wilder consider switching up the formation against Forest? Or is it too much of a risk to make this kind of change at this stage of the season? Let us know below.

Nottingham Forest: Martin O’Neill isn’t the man for next season

It’s all come crashing down for Martin O’Neill at Forest and now it’s time for the club to find a replacement. Results in the key stage of the season simply haven’t been good enough.

His side have shown a real lack of character and bottle over the last few months. Their away form has been dreadful, with their last win on the road coming on November 24 against Hull. That’s pathetic and nowhere near the standard Forest fans expect.

Their 3-0 loss at Sheffield Wednesday on Tuesday, following their defeat to 22nd-placed Rotherham the week before just proves the wheels have well and truly fallen off, and there’s no way back for O’Neill. He may be a club legend, but he needs to leave.

From a positive position at the start of the year, they’re now six points away from sixth in the tenth spot, alongside with Preston, Hull and Swansea on the same points. That doesn’t seem far, but the sheer number of teams fighting for the play-offs means a slip up is fatal, and they’ve had far too many.

The players just don’t seem to be putting it all in anymore, and it’s a sign that the manager’s time is up. They should find a replacement now so they can start preparing for a promotion push next season.

If they leave it too late, plans won’t be in place for summer and they could face another campaign like this one. It’s not good enough for their play-off hopes to be over already.

The fans know it, the board knows it and Martin O’Neill will know it too.

Forest fans, do you think Martin O’Neill should be sacked and who would replace him? Join the discussion by commenting below…

Leeds United: Bielsa’s reliance on one style could hinder club’s promotion hopes

It has been quite a transformation at Elland Road this season, hasn’t it Leeds fans?

The Marcelo Bielsa era has brought a style of football to the Championship which has at times been spellbinding when the Whites have been at their very best.

However, as recently demonstrated in their 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United, the obsession with controlling the possession does come with notable drawbacks at times. Whereas the Blades and Norwich City have displayed different game plans for certain opposition, Leeds have, by in large, stuck to theirs regardless of the situation that they find themselves in.

Although this may have worked for the likes of Barcelona and Spain in the past, the constant competitiveness of England’s second tier means that in order to achieve promotion, which is the Whites’ goal this season, they have to develop another way of playing.

Bielsa’s side may have won all 18 of their clashes when scoring first but when you look at their stats when they concede the opening goal, you start to uncover what must be a disturbing pattern for the club’s supporters. Leeds have won just four games out of a possible 19 after going behind which illustrates that their tactical approach is only effective when the team makes the best possible starts to their games.

To solve this conundrum, the Argentine boss might have to think about switching it up in the final eight games of the season if his side are in trouble. This could mean a slight alteration in formation to include two strikers or a drastic change that opposing teams may not expect from Leeds.

Although it would be foolish to suggest that they cannot be promoted by playing the same way as they have been doing throughout the 2018/19 campaign, it would certainly benefit the Whites in the long run if they develop new ideas of how to break down their opposition.

What do you think Leeds fans? Should Bielsa develop a back-up plan for when your side go behind in games? Or do you still have faith that his current system will take you to the Premier League? Let us know below.
