Liverpool fans react to latest Bowen rumour

A number of Liverpool supporters have reacted positively to a report claiming that the Reds are still interested in signing West Ham forward Jarrod Bowen.

The Hammers have enjoyed a strong season so far despite their loss of form in recent weeks, including their 3-2 defeat at home to Southampton on Boxing Day.

Numerous individuals have stood out for David Moyes’ side and Bowen has been one of them, scoring three goals and registering five assists in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent weeks, with Jurgen Klopp potentially seeing him as someone who could add squad depth in attack.

According to the Liverpool Echo [via Anfield Watch on Twitter], Bowen is still ‘of interest’ to the Reds, with Leeds United winger Raphinha also mentioned as a possible target.

Mohammad Asif, Man of the Match for his nine wickets, has said he enjoyed bowling in New Zealand and felt he was getting back into the rhythm after missing Test cricket for nearly two years. After his incisive display on day four, Asif recalled the last time he took 17 wickets in two Tests, in Sri Lanka in 2006. “I had two great Tests against Sri Lanka and now it’s same situation here,” Asif said. “The last match [in Dunedin where he took eight wickets] was fifty-fifty, not being decided till the last hour.”While the team had planned attacks for different New Zealand batsmen, Asif believed in an age-old and simple fast bowler’s mantra – just bowl to the stumps and pitch the ball in the right areas. “We watched videos of New Zealand batsmen, discussed which side they like to play, what weaknesses they have,” he said. However, Asif said the out-of-form New Zealand batsmen did not look nervous when facing up to him and Mohammad Aamer. New Zealand were bowled out for 99 in the first innings in Wellington and apart from Ross Taylor, the top-order batsmen have looked out of depth. “I think they batted well. Taylor got 97, Daniel Vettori scored 99 in the previous game and Brendon McCullum also got a half-century,” he said. “Being in or out of form is part of the game. But facing the new ball in New Zealand is difficult.”Pakistan’s captain Mohammad Yousuf also stressed that the pitch was not easy to bat on. Though they won emphatically, bowling New Zealand 141 runs short of the target, Pakistan will be concerned about the number of catches they dropped in the match. They dropped six in the second innings alone: Yousuf dropped Peter Fulton on 2, Misbah-ul-haq dropped Taylor on 13, Umar Gul dropped McCullum on 13, Shoaib Malik dropped two in succession – Iain O’Brien and Daniel Vettori – and then Danish Kaneria dropped one of his own bowling when he failed to take a Vettori top edge.Yousuf felt that while the players were no doubt concerned, it had been very difficult to hold on to catches in the cold conditions. “The ball is moving around and because of the wind it is difficult to catch. I feel everyone tried hard and we are still working on our fielding,” he said. The serie decider in Napier is expected to be played on a flat pitch but Yousuf said he would wait until he had inspected the pitch before deciding whether or not to go with two spinners.

Autor do gol contra o Fla, Jean Patrick comemora saída do Z4

New Zealand to host Pakistan 'home' series

New Zealand will host six Tests in a summer for the first time after confirming their series against Pakistan, Bangladesh and Australia for 2009-10. The season features a three-Test series against Pakistan, who will be the ‘home’ team after relocating the games to New Zealand due to security concerns in Pakistan, while the heavy schedule has forced Australia’s tour to be cut to two Tests instead of three. The first Test against Pakistan is in Dunedin from November 24, before the series moves on to Wellington and Napier in December. After a break over Christmas and January, the New Zealanders host Bangladesh for a Twenty20, three ODIs and a one-off Test in Hamilton during February.Australia’s tour features two Twenty20s in late February before a five-match ODI series for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy and two Tests – rather than the originally scheduled three – in Wellington and Hamilton starting on March 19 and 27 respectively. It will be the first time in 20 years that New Zealand have hosted Australia for a series of fewer than three Tests and it confirms that Australia and New Zealand players will not be available for IPL till March 31.”Playing Test cricket in New Zealand after the cessation of daylight saving and deep into the second week of April is not realistic,” Justin Vaughan, the chief executive of New Zealand Cricket, said. “Therefore our only option has been to limit the series to two Tests.”This is shaping up as a very exciting season for cricket fans – and a really busy one for the Black Caps. New Zealand has never before hosted more than five Tests in a season, so the six Test matches being played this summer is a tremendous programme.”The summer will feature two one-day internationals against Australia at Auckland’s Eden Park, which will at the time remain under redevelopment with a reduced capacity. Only 8000 seats will be available for each of those games, instead of the usual level of up to 25,000, and fans can pre-register for tickets at the New Zealand Cricket website.Pakistan in New Zealand

Rangers: Is this GVB’s next van Persie?

As Rangers headed into the international break they will have done so with glee as the Gers sat top of the league with everything appearing to be rather rosy at Ibrox.

There was a Scottish League Cup semi-final to prepare for and Steven Gerrard will have been confident about Rangers making the final.

However, he is no longer in Glasgow. The Gers have lost their title-winning head coach to south of the border and instead of a straightforward break, they had to work harder than ever to replace him.

The new boss is well known at Ibrox and brings with him a CV that eclipses that of Gerrard.

On Thursday afternoon, it was confirmed that Dutch coach Giovanni van Bronckhorst would become the 17th permanent manager of the club.

He has won the Eredivisie with Feyenoord in what stands out as his proudest achievement to date as a manager. However, his expertise guided the Netherlands-based side to two cup triumphs too.

The 46-year-old will also bring with him an experience of managing some of the finest players to grace European football. That list includes Liverpool hero Dirk Kuyt and Premier League winner Robin van Persie.

The former Arsenal star was a revelation under van Bronckhorst’s watchful eyes, bagging 25 times in 45 matches under the new Rangers manager’s tutelage.

Of course, it is hard to compare van Persie to anybody in the Gers squad but their head coach will undoubtedly require somebody who can fire in the goals on a regular basis.

Ryan Kent will, of course, be vital to retaining their Premiership crown but Alfredo Morelos will also need to start firing.

El Bufalo has been out of form this term with just four league strikes but it surely won’t be long before he becomes his ruthless self again.

The £33k-per-week earner may see a new manager as the perfect opportunity and if he starts scoring regularly again, he will become van Bronckhorst’s next van Persie in Scotland.

Morelos has been consistently linked with a move away from Glasgow but ahead of the January window, Ross Wilson and co must ensure he stays put.

He is a man capable of carrying them to the title and if we consider his goal record, it becomes clear why he’s being mentioned in the same breath as one of the Netherland’s great modern centre-forwards.

The dominant Colombian forward has beaten the goalkeeper on 101 occasions since arriving at Rangers and his iconic playstyle has earned some eye-catching appraisals.

“He was like a jungle cat who hadn’t been trained,” former coach Carlos Restrepo said of his youth days.

“He has a body type like an ox,” Restrepo added in an interview with The Athletic.

Van Persie was more technical than physical, something Morelos typifies, but their goalscoring records certainly match up.

Van Bronckhorst will surely relish the opportunity to coach him each day.

Flower remains optimistic about win

The coach Andy Flower believes England still have a chance of taking a 2-0 Ashes lead despite the third day being washed out at Edgbaston. Play was abandoned following an inspection at 2.30pm with England stuck on 116 for 2 in the third Test, still 147 behind Australia’s first-innings total.Puddles continued to sit on the outfield more than two hours after the cancellation and Flower expected another curtailed day on Sunday. “I think Steve Rouse [the groundsman] has said we might get 70 overs in and that would be a godsend if we do,” he said. “There’s nothing we can do about this so I would hope it doesn’t damage [our momentum] at all.”However, Flower remained confident of his side’s ability to force a win that would ensure their worst-case scenario is a drawn series. “Absolutely, you can see how quickly things can happen in a game, so a result is definitely possible,” he said. “Whether or not that happens, we’ll have to see how well both sides play. But if we can get 70 overs in [on Sunday], we still have to bat well to get a lead. It’s up to us to bat well and see how far ahead we can get.” The forecast is for sunny intervals for day four and light rain on Monday.Shane Watson, Australia’s stand-in opener, also held out hope for a quick turnaround. “There is a possibility but I am not exactly sure how things are going to pan out,” he said. “We are going to have to bowl extremely well once we get out there to give ourselves a chance. We are 1-0 down and we can’t afford to have too many draws otherwise the series is lost.”The pitch has been under cover since Friday afternoon, when bad light ended the second day, and Flower expected the surface to be livelier whenever England resume. Another concern for the hosts is what the heavy outfield, which was also drenched in the lead-up to the game, does to Andrew Flintoff’s legs. Flintoff will carry a nagging knee problem into retirement at the end of the series and remains a match-to-match proposition.”It will be quite a lot of wear and tear on him actually, on that heavy outfield if we do bowl on it for any period of time, but he’ll be doing everything he can to win this game for England,” Flower said. Flintoff had no lingering problems from his 15 overs in the first innings and Flower hoped he would also be able to appear in Friday’s fourth Test in Leeds.”I think he can,” he said. “Whether he does or not I don’t know, we don’t know what’s going to happen over the next two days, but he’s a strong bloke so it’s possible.”

Derbyshire offer Australia match practice

Derbyshire have offered Australia a one-day match next week to help keep them active after their exit from the ICC World Twenty20

Cricinfo staff10-Jun-2009Derbyshire have offered Australia a one-day match next week to help keep them active after their exit from the ICC World Twenty20.Australia, who were unceremoniously dumped out of the tournament on Monday after defeats by West Indies and Sri Lanka, have been left with no cricket for a fortnight before their Ashes tour opener against Sussex at Hove.”From a cricketing point of view, it would suit us nicely,” John Morris, Derbyshire’s head of cricket, said. However, it seems unlikely Australia will take them up on the offer, preferring instead to remain at their temporary base in Leicester and make full use of the net and gym facilities at Grace Road.

Crystal Palace linked to John Swift

Crystal Palace are reportedly amongst a host of Premier League clubs lining up a move for Reading midfielder John Swift in the January window.

What’s the story?

According to Football League World,  the Eagles are one of four top-flight clubs interested in securing the highly-rated 26-year-old’s services after the Royals incurred an impending points deduction.

Swift has entered the final year of his current contract with Reading, but the Championship outfit were hoping a promotion push would be enough to convince their prized asset to put pen to paper on a new deal.

However, with them in discussions with the EFL over a points deduction, climbing out of English football’s second-tier now appears a tall order, meaning Swift could depart over the winter window.

The report states that: “Football League World can reveal a Premier League quartet of Burnley, Wolves, Crystal Palace and Norwich City are all keen on trying to get a deal sorted in the winter window before potentially getting him on a free transfer at the end of this campaign.

“It just remains to be seen, then, if Reading try to sell him in the January with that in mind to at least get some kind of fee.”

Crystal Palace can repeat Michael Olise masterclass

Swift rose through the ranks of boyhood club Chelsea before becoming frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities after he made just one senior appearance for the senior side.

A string of loan spells at Rotherham United, Swindon Town and Brentford led to the Stamford Bridge outfit offering the academy graduate a new contract back in 2016, but he rejected it in order to get regular game time at Reading.

His brave decision earned praise from England boss Gareth Southgate – who worked closely with Swift during his time in charge of the Under-21s – saying he was right to cut ties with the capital club.

“John has done himself a favour leaving Chelsea,” said the national team manager, who was speaking to journalism students at a visit to the University of Derby five years ago (as relayed by BershireLive). “He’s got a great future ahead of him.”

Since arriving at the Madejski Stadium, Swift has become one of the Championship’s star performers, bagging 30 goals and laying on a further 30 assists in 173 appearances for Reading.

And he’s elevated his game to new heights this term. In just nine outings for Veljko Paunovic’s charges, the 5ft 9 dynamo has notched seven goals and provided a staggering five assists, highlighting his top-class potential.

If Palace are able to fend off the competition for Swift’s services, then he will be the second Reading star to move to south London in recent times after Michael Olise joined the Eagles over the summer.

The duo will add some star quality to Patrick Vieira’s squad should they be reunited at Selhurst Park, marking another masterclass in the transfer market for

Forget Noble: This Irons ace let Moyes down

West Ham United’s unbeaten run in the Premier League came to a gutting end as they were defeated by former loan star Jesse Lingard and his Manchester United side on Sunday afternoon.

After coming on as a substitute, the 28-year-old midfielder cut inside and curled an effort past Lukasz Fabianksi with just two minutes remaining after Cristiano Ronaldo had made it all-square before the break following Said Benrahma’s 30th-minute opener.

There was to be late drama as visiting defender Luke Shaw was adjudged to have handled the ball inside the area in stoppage time and David de Gea managed to save the spot-kick from Mark Noble, who had come on moments earlier specifically to take it.

Some may be quick to blame the retiring Hammers skipper but on his day, he’s among the finest penalty takers in the division and you’d back him to score nine times out of ten.

Other members of David Moyes’ squad were far more culpable for their struggles on the pitch at the London Stadium, one of whom was arguably Pablo Fornals, who was quite poor out wide.

He played the entire 90 minutes and recorded 56 touches – the fourth-highest of the home side – but he failed to contribute much in an attacking sense.

As per SofaScore, the £26m-rated Spain international failed to keep his two shots on target, and whilst he made two key passes, they failed to result in anything notable.

Fornals struggled against the likes of Paul Pogba, Shaw and Ronaldo on his side of the pitch and it saw him earn the lowest rating in the West Ham squad with 6.1.

He lost 11 of his 14 duels (79%) both on the ground and in the air, and from those 56 touches, he lost the ball 13 times – or once every 4.3 times and once every seven minutes.

Fornals was also dribbled past three times, only reinforcing the fact that he couldn’t match his opposition on the flank and he recorded one error that nearly cost them hugely, via SofaScore.

Moyes would’ve expected a lot better from one of the more experienced members of the squad, particularly as he knew the Spaniard would need to step up to help fill the void left behind by Michail Antonio, who was suspended for this fixture.

Fornals badly let the Irons down on Sunday afternoon, and he must improve if he’s to keep his place in the team, particularly with the likes of Nikola Vlasic arriving in east London.

AND in other news, Moyes could unearth West Ham’s next Upson in 17 y/o “monster” who’s “got everything”…
