Calhanoglu can ease Arsenal’s Buendia pain

Arsenal could turn their attentions to a new target after suffering a devastating blow in their bid to sign Emiliano Buendia this week…

What’s the word?

The Gunners have lost the race to clinch the Norwich City playmaker after he opted to join Premier League rivals Aston Villa in an initial £33m deal but the North London outfit reportedly have a fresh name in mind.

According to CBS Sports journalist James Benge, AC Milan midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu is on their shortlist, he tweeted:

“Another target who Arsenal are understood to have broached internally is Hakan Calhanoglu, out of contract with AC Milan this summer. He is an option, not clear how high on the list he might be but [the] expectation is he’s an alternative to Odegaard.”

Forget about Buendia

The 27-year-old, who is rated at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, is an intriguing solution to Mikel Arteta’s attacking midfield woes, not at least because he won’t cost Stan Kroenke and KSE a single penny in terms of a transfer fee.

And that could be important if Arsenal are to bolster the playing squad right across the pitch as we’re yet to see what sort of damage their failure to qualify for Europe will do to their finances.

Thus, signing a quality player on a free makes the world of sense to do right now, especially as he appears to fit a lot of criteria that Arteta is currently lacking.

Martin Odegaard was always going to be a short-term option, as much as the club want to keep hold of him, whilst Mesut Ozil was on a rapid decline prior to his long-awaited departure.

Calhanoglu has emerged as one of Milan’s star performers after registering nine goals and 12 assists across 43 appearances in all competitions this season, via Transfermarkt.

But perhaps more interestingly, his ability to progressively move the ball forward is what makes him most appealing.

The Gunners ranked 12th in the league for average number of shots per game (12.1) whilst they scored the second-fewest number of goals from set-pieces (six), as per WhoScored.

Calhanoglu averaged 7.92 progressive carries per 90 minutes (FBRef) and created a whopping 50 chances from dead-ball situations alone with a further 48 taking him to a total of 98 for the season (WhoScored).

By comparison, Bukayo Saka was Arteta’s most creative influence with 36 key chances created – some margin off the 56-cap Turkey international.

It’s no wonder the 27-year-old’s head coach Stefan Pioli has waxed lyrical about his talents, he told reporters (via MilanNews.it):

“Calhanoglu is a leader of this team. He’s a leader on the pitch, he’s an intelligent player. Lately, we have faced teams that have closed the spaces and therefore, sometimes, I have had to lower him even though I want to keep him high.

“He knows how to marry perfectly with the game of his teammates. I have great respect for him and with intelligent players, you can play great games. He has the qualities to have some more goals.”

Also lauded as “generous and exceptional,” it’s evident that Calhanoglu would be a massive upgrade to Arsenal’s attacking midfield department and even though they missed out on Buendia, Edu Gaspar and co can alleviate the pain by landing the 5 foot 10 wizard for nothing.

Ex-Leeds star dismisses Bamford claim

Former Leeds United midfielder Carlton Palmer has rejected the notion that Patrick Bamford is being snubbed by England manager Gareth Southgate because he does not play for a bigger club.

Southgate announced a 33-man provisional squad for Euro 2020 on Tuesday, which needs to be cut down to 26 by the beginning of June.

However, even with the squad limit currently at 33, Bamford was still unable to make the cut.

Prior to the announcement of this current squad, another English striker in Charlie Austin claimed on talkSPORT (via MOT Leeds News) that the 27-year-old was being snubbed because he did not play for a bigger side. It is a sentiment, however, that Palmer does not agree with.

“I don’t think he’s been overlooked because he doesn’t play for a big club because Leeds United are a big club,” the ex-Whites player exclusively told FFC.

“He’s knocking on the door. I don’t believe that Gareth Southgate’s not picked him because he’s not at a big club or he’s at Leeds United. I think there’s great competition for places.”

Whatever Southgate’s reasoning is, no one could blame Bamford for feeling hard done by.

With 17 goals to his name in the Premier League this season, Tottenham talisman Harry Kane (23) was the only Englishman to register more strikes.

Captain, coach differ on causes of defeat

The tall-talking Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and the team’s coolheaded coach John Wright on Tuesday differed on the causes for India’stame defeat in the second cricket Test against Zimbabwe in Harare onMonday

19-Jun-2001The tall-talking Indian captain Sourav Ganguly and the team’s coolheaded coach John Wright on Tuesday differed on the causes for India’stame defeat in the second cricket Test against Zimbabwe in Harare onMonday.A dismal failure with the bat – he has aggregated just 49 runs in thelast seven Test innings – Ganguly blamed his batsmen for the defeat. As for the bowlers, “they did not bowl badly,” he said.Wright, a former New Zealand captain, however, had tough words forboth batsmen and bowlers from whom he expected greater discipline.Analysing India’s defeat which enabled the home side to level theseries 1-1, Wright said the Indian batsmen must have the disciplineand the ability to graft. “We must produce at least 300 runs onwickets that seam,” he said.”I think from the batting perspective, there are certain shots whichare more difficult to play in conditions such as here. We have toadjust in places where the ball moves around a bit,” he said.India made just 237 and 234 batting first and most of its top orderbatsmen were out chasing deliveries outside the off-stump. “That to meis the stand-out reason. You have to occupy the crease a little moreand rein in some of your attacking instincts,” the coach said.Ganguly conceded that his team lost the game in the first hour of thefourth morning. “You can’t lose seven wickets for 37 runs and expectto win. It was poor batting from top to number eleven,” he said.About his own inglorious role in the defeat, the skipper said “therewas a game plan for me to see off the new ball. I am a regular. It wasmy responsibility to see the new ball (off) and then hope thetailenders would do well later”.Wright was critical of the medium-pacers and the kind of line andlength they maintained in the series. “We bowled too short. I thinkour medium-pacers have to learn to make the batsmen commit more on thefront foot and bowl the off-stump line,” he said adding that currentlyIndia was not exactly overflowing with its bowling resources.”If you look at the two bowling sides, the Zimbabwe attack was goodenough to dismiss the Indian batting line up which, on paper, looksvery strong. I can’t see any reason why our bowlers can’t do thesame,” the coach said.Ganguly, however, didn’t blame his bowlers. “I don’t think our bowlersbowled badly. Even the way we fought to defend 157 was heartening. Ifwe had stretched the target to 225, it would have been a differentball game altogether,” he said. The skipper praised seamer Ashish Nehra and off spinner HarbhajanSingh for their bowling in the series. “Nehra bowled fantastically. Hewas our main bowler. We just didn’t have enough runs on the board (forhim) to win us the game,” Ganguly said and added “as for Harbhajan, ahaul of 32 wickets on these pitches was not possible. But still he dida good job. He didn’t go for many runs and tied up one end”.Though lamenting the lack of bowling resources, Wright conceded thatthe bowlers did “a great job” and said “they were not the reason whythis Test match was lost”.The coach said “I think we do lack quality bowlers but we have to workhard. We got to use our resources as best as we can. Having said that,I am very encouraged by the performance of Ashish Nehra. He has donebrilliantly on this tour. He seems to move the ball and has a verynatural talent”.Wright complimented Zimbabwe for the way they won the Test with adepleted attack and especially when one-down in the series. He saidtheir bowlers gave a very good exhibition on the final morning, attacking the stumps with the new ball.Turning to individual performances of the Indian players, Wright, whenasked whether it was a tactical mistake to have included Ajit Agarkarin place of Zaheer Khan, replied “Zaheer possibly was unlucky to missthis Test”.On the strange decision of including Hemang Badani to open the inningsbut sending in Sameer Dighe as Shiv Sundar Das’ partner, Wright said”It is one of the problems (you face) when you tour abroad with onlytwo specialist openers. If someone gets injured, you have got to tryout someone (else). In retrospect, I would take the responsibility forthe situation. I thought Dighe would do a good job there”.Asked why Rahul Dravid, who has a better technique against the newball bowlers, was not asked to open the innings, Wright said the vicecaptain was more comfortable batting lower down the order.”We have to find someone who wants to open the batting. I thinkselecting Dravid would be a short term and not a long term prospect,”Wright said. “Rahul is averaging 54 in Test cricket. He has opened ona couple of ocassions and hasn’t done too brilliantly. The figureswould suggest so. I feel, for Rahul we need to be looking at numberfive or six,” he said. The coach was very disappointed with the missed opportunity ofclaiming a rare series victory abroad. “I think we missed a goodopportunity here. I feel very disappointed for cricket fans in India. They would have enjoyed the first series victory in 15 years,” hesaid.

Leeds: Bielsa must drop Tyler Roberts

Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa must make a ruthless decision and drop Tyler Roberts from the starting line-up for the clash against Burnley in the Premier League.

While the Whites may have gotten back to winning ways last week by securing a 3-1 victory over Spurs, Roberts once again endured a disappointing afternoon, eventually being replaced just before the hour mark.

The Wales international appeared to be heading for the exit door a couple of months ago, with reports suggesting that clubs from the Championship were looking to lure him away from Elland Road.

Since – and actually even before – then,  Roberts just hasn’t shown anywhere near enough to warrant being picked continuously in this Leeds side, with no goals at all in the 24 Premier League games that he has played.

Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan simply insisted that the £4.5m-rated forward just may not be cut out for this level, saying: “Is he good enough? In my opinion he isn’t. I would love him to go out there and prove me wrong because I want everyone to succeed. I need him to show me more. He needs to show more fight and desire. I just do not see that.

Whelan has also previously called for the Leeds manager to drop Roberts from the starting line-up, saying: “I’m just not seeing enough from him. There’s glimpses there but he’s not hurting teams with his performances and his creativity. Now number 10, you’ve got to be that special player. You’ve got to be that player that can open up teams and really take the game by the scruff of the neck. I just don’t think Tyler Roberts does that for Leeds.”

As per WhoScored, his lowly averages of one shot and 0.5 key passes per game in the Premier League are even worse than the likes of Stuart Dallas, who until recent weeks has played in a number of different roles, including both full-back positions.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-transfer-rumours-and-news” title=”Read the latest Leeds transfer rumours and news!”]

With Rodrigo having returned from injury and coming off the bench in the last couple of games, scoring against Tottenham last week, Bielsa now has the perfect opportunity to drop Roberts and start his £27m signing.

Roberts has simply held Leeds back for too long with his ineffective displays.

Meanwhile, Leeds source drops exciting update on club’s transfer plans…

Lampard can fix historic West Brom issue

Frank Lampard is a contender for the West Bromwich Albion job, according to recent reports…

What’s the word?

The Express & Star claim the former Chelsea manager is on the Baggies’ shortlist as the search goes on for Sam Allardyce’s successor after it was confirmed that the 66-year-old would be leaving the Midlands club this summer.

Lampard also recently confirmed he is open to working in the Championship once again, having kickstarted his coaching career at Derby County.

“I would take a view on going into the Championship. If it was the right club, the right project, for sure. I don’t have an ego where I feel just because I’ve managed in the Champions League, that’s the be-all and end-all,” the 42-year-old claimed.

Youth boost

The other name mentioned in the running is former Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder.

West Brom would certainly be in good hands by appointing either of the aforementioned duo but there is something that gives Lampard the edge – and that’s his track record when it comes to developing the club’s own talent.

This is also a problem that has affected the Hawthorns for many, many years.

The Baggies have one of the best academy set-ups in the Midlands, if not in England, yet as soon as a talented hopeful emerges as a potential star, they lose them to bigger teams – more often than not.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-west-brom-news-manager-gossip-transfer-rumours-and-more” title= “Read the latest West Brom news, transfer rumours, managerial gossip and more!”]

In recent times, there have been several examples.

Nathan Ferguson swapped the newly-promoted side for Crystal Palace last year, Louie Barry ended up at Villa via a scenic trip to Barcelona, Morgan Rogers joined Man City, Izzy Brown went to Chelsea, and Jerome Sinclair was too tempted by Anfield to stay at Albion.

During his time at Stamford Bridge as manager, Lampard was responsible for bedding through the likes of Reece James, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount – all of whom are regular first-team starters now.

This is something that Brendan Rodgers lauded him for back in August 2019. He told Sky Sports:

“Frank understands the policy at the club, how it works and will be looking to bring in some of the young players which he has done. He has given them an opportunity. You have to admire that.”

Furthermore, Peterborough chairman Barry Fry believes the former Premier League midfielder would be a hit wherever he ended up. In an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, he said: I think wherever he went, Frank, he would be a success – he’s just got that way about him.”

Scott Parker is another name at the very top to be left wowed by Lampard, too.

“I was privileged enough to play with him but I’ve probably got more respect for a guy that had an unbelievable work ethic,” revealed the Fulham boss to the Press Association before later adding: “It doesn’t surprise me that he’s gone to Derby and does well and then gets the Chelsea job under tight restrictions last year in terms of what they had to go through and he did an incredible job with them.”

If Luke Dowling wants to fix one of the Baggies’ worst-ever problems, then Lampard is surely a top candidate to succeed Big Sam at the Hawthorns.

Forget Wilder. He must look to get it done as early as possible.

Think of the benefits the likes of Rekeem Harper, Dara O’Shea, Rayhaan Tulloch and many more could get.

SWFC must not sell Windass this summer

Dom Howson recently claimed that Sheffield Wednesday could struggle to keep hold of Josh Windass this summer…

What’s been said?

According to Howson’s post on Twitter, should Wednesday suffer relegation to League One come the end of the season, the club will “have a job on their hands” in keeping the attacking midfielder at Hillsborough.

Howson also claimed in an article of his for Examiner Live that it would be unlikely the 27-year-old will be short of suitors in the summer transfer window, with West Bromwich Albion being credited with an interest in Windass back in January.

Owls must not sell

Sheffield Wednesday fans will require no explanation as to how important Windass has been to their side this season, with the £1.44 million-rated midfielder scoring nine goals and providing five assists over his 39 Championship appearances, as well as creating seven big chances and making an average of 0.7 key passes per game.

Additionally, the former Rangers man’s performances have seen him average a SofaScore match rating of 6.80 – ranking the 27-year-old as Wednesday’s sixth-best player in the second tier – with Sue Smith claiming that the midfielder is a “constant threat” for the Owls’ attack.

Furthermore, the appointment of Darren Moore as the club’s manager back in March appears to have improved the midfielder’s game significantly, with Windass scoring four goals and providing four assists over the 12 games the 47-year-old has been at the club.

As such, should Wednesday go on to suffer relegation to League One this summer, retaining Windass ahead of next season would undoubtedly boost the Owls’ chances of an immediate return to the Championship, particularly under the guidance of Moore.

However, whether or not the midfielder himself would be open to staying at Hillsborough after relegation is another matter entirely, particularly if a team such as West Brom declares their interest, although even if that is the case, the club should be doing everything in their power to keep the 27-year-old on their books as if he does leave, Moore will surely be gutted to lose such an influential player ahead of what will be a massive season.

Wout Weghorst to Tottenham unlikely

Bundesliga expert Daniel Pinder has told Football FanCast in an exclusive interview that he cannot see Wout Weghorst leaving Wolfsburg for Tottenham this summer.

The 6 ft 6 Dutch striker has been linked with a move to the north London club amid a stunning campaign.

Weghorst has managed to reach the 20-goal mark in the Bundesliga this season, showing that he could perhaps be a reliable alternative to Harry Kane if the England captain remains at Spurs.

Pinder, however, believes Kane’s presence at Tottenham is actually likely to detract the 28-year-old from wanting to join the club.

On Weghorst, who is currently valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the editor-in-chief at Get German Football News told FFC:

“I think he’d only consider it if Kane leaves. Wolfsburg are third in the Bundesliga, so the chance of them getting Champions League football next season is extremely high. So unless the offer’s right, the team’s right, I don’t really think he has that desire to leave Wolfsburg.”

Loanee Carlos Vinicius is the other striker currently in Tottenham’s squad, but recent reports suggest that the Premier League outfit do not want to activate the £36m option-to-buy fee they have in place with Benfica.

It means Spurs will likely need to sign a new No.9 whether Kane stays or not.

Jack Harrison would want Leeds transfer

Dean Windass has exclusively Football FanCast that Jack Harrison would snap up the chance to sign permanently for Leeds, although his future could depend on whether Marcelo Bielsa stays at Elland Road next season.

Harrison is currently enjoying his third consecutive season-long loan spell at Elland Road, all of which have been under the guidance of the Argentine.

The former New York Red Bulls attacker has never made a first-team appearance for his parent club Manchester City despite making the switch from the MLS more than three years ago, but would appear to be hitting crunch time this summer, with just one year remaining on his deal at the Etihad.

Harrison was ineligible for Leeds’ thrilling victory against Pep Guardiola’s men on Saturday, but has been in impressive form following their promotion to the Premier League, scoring seven goals, bettered only by Patrick Bamford, whilst also adding five assists.

“That club now determines on the manager,” Windass told Football FanCast.

“Jack Harrison has done a fantastic job playing wide left, scoring goals and assisting goals, but everything on Leeds is determined on Bielsa. If he stays, Leeds could be in the top four.

“If Jack Harrison had the chance to stay at Leeds, he would do, but if Leeds keep the manager, then they’re going to be a force to be reckoned with next season. If the manager leaves, the club could be a car crash next season.”
