Cooke's maiden ton revives Glamorgan

Chris Cooke scored a superb maiden first-class century to keep Kent’s attack at bay and guide Glamorgan to 329 all out on the opening day of the Division Two match at Canterbury.Cooke, the 28-year-old South African-born batsman, was last out for 171 after holding Glamorgan’s first innings together against a Kent team still with an outside chance of promotion and aiming to win three of their last four Championship games. It always looked like being Cooke’s day after he was dropped on 2 by Adam Riley at second slip, off Darren Stevens, and overall he batted for 214 balls and struck 18 fours and a six.Riley’s miss was hugely costly for Kent, who would have had their opponents 15 for 4 had Cooke been dismissed. As it was, Cooke and Jim Allenby put on 62 for the fourth wicket to begin Glamorgan’s recovery from 7 for 3.Allenby made 44 from 44 balls, leading a counter-attack with eight fours, but it was not until Dean Cosker joined Cooke in an eighth-wicket partnership of 118 in 32 overs that Glamorgan moved into a position of comfort following their decision to bat first on a good pitch and in warm, sunny conditions. The 36-year-old Cosker’s two-hour 45 from 104 balls was only seven runs short of his career-best, and his determined resistance gave Cooke the opportunity to go past his previous first-class best – 96, also against Kent, in June – as well as hauling Glamorgan up from a distinctly under-par 183 for 7.Mitch Claydon led Kent’s bowling effort with 4 for 47 and it was he who ended Cosker’s resistance in his second over with the second new ball.Claydon also added the tail-end wicket of Michael Hogan, bowled swishing, to those earlier of Jacques Rudolph, caught at first slip for nought during an opening spell of 5-4-1-1, and Allenby, who was caught behind thin-edging an attempted pull.Stevens supported Claydon well, starting with a new ball spell of 10-4-15-1 and having Gareth Rees caught at the wicket for 3 as he tried to force away square on the offside. Later, in the second over after lunch, Stevens saw David Lloyd, on 7, drive him straight to mid-off.It was only right at the end of Glamorgan’s innings, when Stevens was hit for 16 runs in an over by Cooke, that he was collared.Robbie Joseph – making his first Championship appearance since the end of June – removed Will Bragg leg-before after the batsman had struggled through 41 balls, and Matt Hunn won an lbw appeal to send back Graham Wagg for 18 after he had driven offspinner Riley for six and four in the space of three balls.Riley did have the consolation of taking Cooke’s wicket, when he drove high to Hunn at long-off, but only after he had batted for five hours and displayed a range of strokeplay unmatched by any other batsman. Before that, indeed, Riley’s only success on a chastening day for the highly-rated 22-year-old, was when Mark Wallace – having contributed 24 to a sixth-wicket stand of 58 with Cooke – lifted a drive to short extra cover.

Carberry, Coles silence Chelmsford

Michael Carberry and Matt Coles silenced the Chelmsford crow as Hampshire beat Essex, South Group leaders, to underline their NatWest t20 Blast qualities

Ryan Bailey at Chelmsford23-Jul-2014
ScorecardMichael Carberry gave Hampshire a blistering start (file picture)•Getty ImagesAs England plunge deeper into disarray, several discounted players could, if they so wish, look on rather smugly. Michael Carberry, it could be argued, is sitting prettiest. If anything, his repute has been enhanced as he channels his indignation into scoring runs for Hampshire. A swashbuckling fifty at Chelmsford silenced the crowd and got his message across.Carberry was one England’s more defiant players during a chastening winter, producing some stubborn displays at the top of the order, but he was overlooked by Peter Moores’ new regime. It is unlikely a recall will come, particularly in the longer-format, as England look to the future, but the manner in which he disdainfully clubbed and swatted the Essex bowling to, and over, the fence had an element of wrath about it.He spanked 25 off the third over of Hampshire’s chase, despite James Vince falling first ball to Graham Napier, and welcomed young Matt Salisbury into the attack the next over by bludgeoning him for three further boundaries. By the time his defences were breached by Ravi Bopara in the eighth over, he had struck six fours and four maximums – destruction had well and truly been done.Matt Coles – promoted up the order in an attempt to improve Hampshire’s run rate – took great pleasure in dishing out more punishment to Essex’s helpless attack in scoring the quickest half-century of the season as Hampshire reached their target of 168 with 15 balls left.Essex’s total was always likely to be inadequate on a bountiful surface and village-green sized boundaries. At one point, the umpires radioed upstairs asking for more balls to be sourced; it was lucky they did as the carnage escalated. In all, the rope was cleared 19 times but Hampshire suffered less damage as their slower bowlers operated acutely.Jesse Ryder, for a player who has built his repute in the shortest-format, has failed to provide the pyrotechnics he’s capable of on a regular basis up front. Ryder’s footwork, particularly against spin, is questionable at the best of times but the manner in which Will Smith fired one through his shadowy defences, trying to force one into the off side, set a precedent. The ease in which Essex have coasted through the group stage without him firing regularly is a testament to the subordinates below him. However, Paul Grayson will be hoping a below-par performance, in all disciplines, is nothing more than a blip in a near faultless season to date.Tom Westley has stood tallest as top-scorer and coming in at the fall of the first wicket, with Ryder’s indifferent form, there has been weight on his shoulders to direct the innings. He briefly did so with a quickfire 31 but after ignited the innings with a couple of glorious shots through the covers, Hampshire put the brakes on their charge.Essex lost four for 36 in the final five overs, however, as Hampshire’s spinners mixed their pace to great effect. Smith led the way with career-best figures of 3 for 17 as James Foster followed Ryder’s suit and Ryan ten Doeschate holed out to Glenn Maxwell at deep midwicket. Coles conceded 42 runs in his four overs but repaired the damage with the bat in some style.

Vamos trabalhar pensando no apenas Bragantino-PA – concluiu.

Gloucs make solid start in reply

ScorecardDarren Stevens continued his impressive campaign with the bat•Getty Images

Darren Stevens recorded his third Championship century of the season as Kent piled on the runs against Division Two rivals Gloucestershire on a rain-shortened second day. Responding to Kent’s 474 all out, the visitors went in at stumps on 80 without loss after 29 overs to trail by 394 at the mid-point of this 162nd Canterbury Cricket Week clash.Stevens, who earlier in the month was charged by the ICC for his failure toreport a corrupt approach while playing for the Dhaka Gladiators in February, made light of the pressure to build on his overnight score of 98 not out.Heavy morning showers had delayed Stevens and the resumption of Kent’s first innings until umpires’ inspections at 1.30pm and 2pm, with play finally allowed to start at 2.20pm. The 37-year-old Stevens needed only two deliveries to reach his hundred by clipping a loose delivery from left-arm seamer David Payne to the ropes at square leg for the 18th boundary of a 127-ball ton.His innings ended selflessly for 126 when – with his side needing seven runs for a fifth batting bonus point and with only four balls remaining before the 110-over cut-off – Stevens top-edged an attempted pull against Benny Howell to be caught by Michael Klinger at short extra cover.Home captain James Tredwell followed in the next over for a season’s best 48 when he steered a Craig Miles legcutter to Chris Dent at second slip to make it 399 for 8. With useful double-figure contributions throughout the tail, including an unbeaten 44 by Calum Haggett, Kent reached 474 before last man Charlie Shreck lost his leg stump just after 4.30pm.Meanwhile, Kent confirmed that Matthew Coles, their 23-year-old strike bowler, has turned down a contract extension and is set to leave the club.

'I know I'm doing a good job' – Shillingford

Much of West Indies’ control over Zimbabwe in the Test series so far has come through Shane Shillingford. With a five-wicket haul on the first day in Roseau, the offspinner has already taken his tally to 14 for the series. The support shown by his team-mates and the management, he said, was indicative of his good work.”(I’m) looking forward to even getting 12 in this match. Once I get the support from the captain, and the players as well, the coach and everybody, I know I’m doing a good job,” he said.Shillingford said that he changed his approach to bowling a little wide outside off stump to counter the sweep which was being employed by the right-handed batsmen.”For the right-handers, when they tried to sweep I tried not to bowl too straight but to bowl a little wider of the off-stump. I noticed they then changed their game plan. I felt our change of tactics worked quite well and we held them very tight. They had to look for other ways to score their runs.”His spell of 5 for 59 helped his side bowl Zimbabwe out for 175, 20 minutes after tea. In the only other Test he played here, against Australia last year, he took ten wickets.”Absolutely feels good, especially coming back home and performing. Coming straight from the first-class season, getting the first match and now the second match. It’s always a pleasure playing with home support and everything.”To be honest, every time West Indies come here, the guys are happy. Because they know the type of crowd they’re going to get. What I really appreciate is that Dominican people support good cricket.”But unlike Shillingford’s last Test here, the crowd is likely to see a West Indies victory this time round.
