Neil Harris indicates Shane Ferguson has a lot of work to do to get back into his plans

[ad_pod ]

Millwall were brutally dumped out of the FA Cup by Brighton on Sunday, with the Lions blowing a 2-0 lead and bowing out after penalties in heartbreaking fashion.

To a man, Neil Harris’ side were diligent in their defending and aggressive on the attack – the boss will surely be immensely proud of his side’s effort, although he doesn’t sound happy with Shane Ferguson one bit.

What did he say?

Well, speaking about his side’s defiant performance at The Den, Harris said:

“In extra-time, you have to lift yourself and go again, and I said to the boys that we started with nothing, and we were now 90 minutes further down the line. We dug in and decided to play with the 5-4-1 to get through to penalties, and then it becomes a lottery. The one major disappointment I do have is Shane Ferguson’s red card – it’s not acceptable on a football pitch.”

Ferguson frozen out?

With mere minutes of extra-time remaining, Millwall looked set to head to penalties with their heads held high after a fantastic showing against Premier League opposition, although Ferguson unfortunately lost his.

Watch how to cross the road like a boss with freestyler Ben Nuttall in the video below…

The 27-year-old inexplicably stamped on Seagulls defender Lewis Dunk, raking the England international’s ankle with his studs – an action which led to his deserved dismissal at the death.

The Northern-Irishman was made to watch the ensuing drama off-field and put a dampener on a great afternoon for everyone involved with and at Millwall, whose fans and players did the club proud.

Harris’ scathing comments, highlighting Ferguson’s moment of madness as the “one major disappointment” despite ‘keeper Dave Martin’s 90th minute howler, perhaps indicate that the Lions number 11 will have some explaining to do this week. It will surely take a lot for him to make it up to his boss and he could spend some time warming the bench.

Young talent: West Ham fans react positively to Ben Johnson contract news

[ad_pod ]

On Wednesday, West Ham United announced that youngster Ben Johnson had signed a new contract with the Hammers until the summer of 2022.

Johnson, 19, made his Premier League debut against Manchester City last month and has trained regularly with the first team during the 2018-19 campaign.

The majority of the teenager’s football this term has come for West Ham’s Under-23 side, though, appearing on 16 occasions for the second team in Premier League 2.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

It remains to be seen whether the 5 ft 9 defender is handed any more first-team action between now and the end of the campaign, but the new deal suggests that the Hammers have a long-term plan for the Englishman.

A number of West Ham fans took to social media to offer their views on the latest developments and it would be fair to say that the majority were delighted with the update.

A selection of the Twitter reaction can be seen below:

Southampton: Hassenhuttl must call time on Nathan Redmond’s St. Mary’s career

Eight games stand between Southampton and Premier League survival this season.

A dreadful start to the 2018/19 campaign under former boss Mark Hughes saw the Saints consistently produce dismal displays of football which more often than not resulted in defeat.

By the start of December, Southampton’s poor form had seen them fall into the relegation zone which forced the club’s hierarchy to make the decision to bring an end to the Welshman’s brief spell at the club by replacing him with former RB Leipzig boss Ralph Hassenhuttl.

Since the Austrian’s arrival, the club’s fortunes on the pitch have improved significantly as they have picked up 21 points from 16 games bringing their total for the season up to 30. The likes of James Ward-Prowse and Danny Ings have thrived under the guidance of Hassenhuttl yet his influence has not had the desired effect on others with one player in particular standing out from the rest.

Nathan Redmond was once tipped to be one of England’s brightest prospects whilst coming through the ranks at Birmingham City having burst onto the scene as a teenager in 2010. A move to Norwich City three years later saw him develop his talents further, helping the Canaries achieve promotion to Premier League via the play-offs.

Despite being unable to save his side from relegation in the following season, Redmond produced a number of impressive performances in his debut campaign in England’s top tier which attracted the interest of Southampton.

The south-coast based side agreed a deal with Norwich to sign the winger in 2016 and early signs were promising as he scored seven Premier League goals which contributed to an eighth-placed finish for the Saints.

However, in the past two seasons Redmond has failed to match these totals as his form has notably regressed. This can be illustrated by the fact that he only scored once in all competitions last season and has just three goals to his name in the Premier League during the 2018/19 campaign despite making 30 appearances for the Saints.

Although he is still an undeniably talented player, his inconsistencies in a Southampton shirt could see Hassenhuttl call time on his career at the club. Any decision surrounding Redmond’s future will ultimately come down to whether the former FC Inglostadt boss believes that he can finally add some much-needed end product to his game on a consistent basis.

Regardless on whether the Saints are playing in the Premier League or the Championship next season, the next nine games could prove definitive for Redmond’s career at the club.

What do you think Southampton fans? Do you think that you should sell Redmond in the summer? Who would you replace the England international with? Let us know below.

Everton want to sign Kurt Zouma permanently

[ad_pod ]

Speaking to The Liverpool Echo, Everton boss Marco Silva has divulged his intentions to sign loanee Kurt Zouma permanently once the Chelsea man’s temporary spell at Goodison Park ends. Would it be a mistake?

What’s the word?

Well, the Portuguese manager told The Liverpool Echo that Zouma has been an excellent addition to the squad and that they are hopeful he can continue to improve, perhaps committing his future to the Toffees as he does so.

Silva believes that the 24-year-old adds a different dynamic to the defence in that he is much faster, and therefore better at recovering when the back-line is breached, than the likes of Phil Jagielka and Yerry Mina.

It would seem that despite a string of poor results, Silva remains confident in his back four – the former Watford boss and his defensive contingent have come under fire in recent weeks for their inability to defend set-pieces – Zouma included.

The Frenchman, though, would be a poor bit of business for the Merseysiders and their money could be better spent elsewhere.

Red card waiting to happen

The Toffees have spent huge amounts of money in the last few years in a bid to break into the top six but most of their signings have flopped pretty spectacularly – choose any from Davy Klaassen, Cenk Tosun, Theo Walcott etcetera.

Signing former St Etienne man Zouma would only extend this list given his poor discipline and recklessness in recent weeks, as well as the surely inflated price that the Blues would command for his services.

The centre-back has received four yellow cards in his last three games, two of which he received last time out in the disappointing 1-0 loss to Watford, meaning he is suspended for the clash with Cardiff next week.

Watch the best fails from the world of indoor football in the video below…

Everton’s summer business seemed smart and the feeling was that they had finally learned from their mistakes while Ronald Koeman was at the helm. Splashing the cash to keep Zouma at Goodison Park would be a huge step back.

Manchester City: Micah Richards says Stones and Fernandinho can replace Laporte

Micah Richards joined BBC’s Football Daily podcast and discussed the latest injury of Manchester City defender Aymeric Laporte and named two players who can still do a good job in his absence.

Overall, it was a pretty good night for Pep Guardiola at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium as the Citizens grabbed two away goals in a 2-1 victory over their hosts.

But that win came with a cost as Laporte had to be substituted off due to another injury. Still, Richards believes the likes of John Stones and Fernandinho have proven themselves worthy of replacing the centre-back.

Here’s what he said on BBC’s Football Daily podcast (26/2/2020): “You could see against Leicester that he wasn’t fully fit. He’s trying to get back to fitness so it is a massive blow. But they’ve got Stones and Fernandinho who can do a good job.”

It is a shame for Laporte – after all, he had recently just returned from a serious injury and now he’ll be back in the stands.

The 25-year-old Frenchman has now missed a total of 30 games in 2019/20 already and it remains to be seen how damaging this could prove to be.

Man City fans, what did you think of Laporte’s new injury? Do you think Stones and Fernandinho can cover for him? Let us know in the comments down below!

Rangers fans on Twitter are losing their patience with feisty Morelos

Alfredo Morelos yesterday left a lot of Rangers fans fuming when he got himself needlessly sent off. That sentence can, and has, been used too many times this season, and whilst his goals are a superb asset to the Gers, his disciplinary record is something that needs to be straightened out as it could cost him a big move in the future.

Morelos had been at his brilliant best in the first half at Pittodrie, latching onto the rebound to score after Ryan Kent forced a smart stop out of Dandies’ ‘keeper Joe Lewis before firing home a superb second with the inside of his left foot from the edge of the box. A few betting men would have been eyeing up a treble for the Colombian, but alas it wasn’t to be.

Instead of Morelos managing to hold out and bag his second hat-trick of the season, he got unnecessarily involved in an incident after the ball had gone with Scot McKenna. The ball was bouncing away and McKenna was on the ground whenMorelos stamped down between the Aberdeen man’s legs in a place no man wants to be stamped on, in return McKenna fired a boot towards Morelos’ head and both men saw red, leaving the Gers pretty hacked off at their goal machine.

You can read the Bluenoses’ frustrated verdict on Morelos’ red card here:

The fans are starting to lose their patience when it comes to Morelos and will hope Steven Gerrard can sort the 22-year-old’s disciplinary issues sooner rather than later.

Everton should take punt on Godsway Donyoh

[ad_pod ]

According to GhanaSoccerNet, Everton are considering a move for FC Nordsjaelland forward Godsway Donyoh, having scouted the 24-year-old this season.

What’s the story?

Donyoh spent time with Manchester City during his youth career, but never made a first-team appearance for the Citizens before departing in 2015.

The 24-year-old was picked up by Nordsjaelland in 2016, and he has scored an impressive 24 goals in 58 appearances for the Danish club in all competitions.

According to GhanaSoccerNet, Everton have sent scouts to watch the forward in action this season, although the same can also be said for Leicester City and Bournemouth as Premier League clubs circle.

Donyoh seemingly cannot stop scoring for his Danish club this season, having found the back of the net on eight occasions, seven of which have come in just 11 league appearances.

Nordsjaelland will seemingly find it difficult to keep hold of the striker, and it would not be a surprise to see him move to the Premier League.

Should Everton take a punt?

With respect to Nordsjaelland, the Danish outfit would be unable to repel interest from England, and Donyoh is hardly going to break the bank.

Scoring goals in Denmark is a different ball game to finding the back of the net in England, but Donyoh’s form this season means that he deserves a shot.

Man City saw enough in him as a youngster to offer him a deal, and the fact that the Ghanaian can play in a number of different positions  in the final third of the field makes him an attractive proposition.

Theo Walcott has struggled for consistency this season, and Donyoh’s arrival would certainly put pressure on the Englishman.

It is perhaps not a signing that will capture the imagination of the Everton fans, but Donyoh’s reported arrival could turn out to be an excellent piece of business.

Pellegrini must buy Tom Cairney in January and drop Mark Noble

West Ham spent heavily during the summer as they looked to give new boss Manuel Pellegrini a squad capable of pushing the east London club back into the top-half of the table after finishing 13th last season.

The Hammers broke their transfer record twice over the summer as they brought Issa Diop and Felipe Anderson in to bolster the squad.

With West Ham bringing in a host of new players, it’s going to take time for the players to adapt and bed into the Premier League.

As shown by West Ham’s two successive defeats, it’s going to take a few months before we see the true potential of the team begin to come through.

In midfield, the Hammers brought in Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez but could still do with some added quality.

With that in mind, West Ham should go back in for Fulham midfielder, Tom Cairney in January – a player they tried to sign over the summer.

The Breakdown

Cairney had a solid game against Spurs yesterday and was Fulham’s best player last season in tandem with Ryan Sessegnon.

Valued at £16.2 million by Transfermarkt, the 27-year-old would’ve been a shrewd piece of business for West Ham as he could’ve either played as an attacking midfielder or at the base of Pellegrini’s 4-2-3-1.

Although we’re only two games into the season, club captain Mark Noble hasn’t looked great.

The pace of the league seems to be a bit too much for the English midfielder and West Ham should be looking to make a January bid for Tom Cairney.

What do you think West Ham fans?
