The Racecourse Ground

Key Information about The Racecourse Ground

The Racecourse Ground is the world’s oldest international football stadium which still hosts international matches.

It opened back in 1807, and has been used for football since 1864 with Wrexham Football Club moving in after being founded during the same year. The Racecourse Ground has hosted the most Wales international matches out of any other ground in the Country, and it is the largest stadium in north Wales with a capacity of 10,771.

The infamous ground is divided into four famous stands; the Kop, Bkoncepts Stand, University End, and Hays Travel Stand.

A history of The Racecourse Ground

Since being formed in the local Turf Hotel public house in October 1864, Wrexham Football Club have played all of their home matches at The Racecourse Ground, with the exception of a couple of seasons in the late 1880s. The concrete terracing on the Kop end was laid down in 1952 and it is the oldest part of the ground to this day. Five years later in 1957,

The Racecourse Ground witnessed a record attendance of 34,445 as fans gathered to watch Wrexham take on Manchester United in an FA Cup Fourth Round tie. Two years later on 30 September 1959, floodlights were installed at the ground for the first time which meant that Wrexham could now host night-time fixtures in darker conditions.

In 2002, then Wrexham FC chairman William Pryce Griffiths agreed a 125-year lease on the Racecourse with Wolverhampton Dudley Breweries for just £750,000. Soon after in 2005, the club hosted a second-leg UEFA Champions League qualifier between TNS and Liverpool, where Steven Gerrard famously scored five goals over both legs of the tie.

On 26 June 2002, the freehold to The Racecourse Ground was acquired by Wrexham AFC from Wolverhampton Dudley Breweries for £300,000, and on the same day the ownership of the freehold was transferred to another one of chairman, Alex Hamilton’s companies – Damens Ltd.

In spring 2014, work commenced on redeveloping The Racecourse Ground, and this included a new pitch and sprinkler system and changing rooms for players. In addition to this the medical and treatment facilities were also upgraded along with enhanced floodlights and the removal of camber lights at the Kop end.

This now meant that the stadium had been reclassified to Category 3 level, which entitles it to host international football matches once again. In August 2016, Wrexham Glyndwr University and Wrexham AFC signed a 99-year The Racecourse Ground stadium lease, as the university had previously purchased the landmark in 2011 to prevent it from extinction.

West Ham: Fans react to news around Sean Dyche

A lot of West Ham fans are discussing the latest news surrounding Sean Dyche and his links to the club.

The news suggests that co-owner Karren Brady knows Dyche quite well and that he has expressed interest in managing the Irons. This news was broken by ExWHUemployee speaking on his West Ham Way podcast, via West Ham News, as he said: “Before we got Moyes he [Dyche] was heavily linked by myself and a number of people. He’s a good friend of Karren Brady for some random reason.

“I don’t know why, but he is. And he has also expressed an interest in managing us. I believe if we wanted to get Sean Dyche next year we could. (But) I don’t think if we stay up they’ll get rid of Moyes, I think Moyes will be the manager next year and I think if we did go down Dyche would obviously not leave Burnley for us.

“But if Moyes was to suddenly go or he was to get the sack then I think Dyche would be interested and I think we would approach him.”

In the Premier League, Dyche has a pretty respectable record with Burnley, as he has managed 186 games and he has been in charge of 57 wins, 45 draws and 87 losses, this gives him a win percentage of around 30.6%, per Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, Moyes at West Ham this season has won four, drawn three and lost 10 of his fixtures, which gives him a 23% win record at the club, per Transfermarkt.

With Burnley notoriously not spending a lot and Dyche having a better win percentage than Moyes, it is understandable that some believe the Clarets boss is a better manager, and many fans of the East London side seem to agree, with one labelling him a ‘proper manager’.

Everton backed to make sensational move for Coutinho

Speaking to Football Insider, Michael Brown has backed Everton to make a sensational move for Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho.

What did he say?

The Brazilian has endured a difficult time of things since leaving Liverpool a few years ago, and has spent this season on loan at Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that Barcelona are willing to cut their losses on Coutinho, and that Everton have been told via intermediaries that he could be available for a fee of around £80m this summer.

Now, Brown has thrown his backing behind a potential move, suggesting that he is the type of high-profile player that Carlo Ancelotti would want at Goodison Park.

The Greatest Bargains in Premier League history – How much did they cost?

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

He said: “What a story that would be, wouldn’t it? I think it’s always, when you’re at big clubs, you go to their rivals, we’ve seen it before and it’s not always welcome from different sets of supporters here and there.

“He’s a great talent and Everton, you would expect Ancelotti to be going for some big players. He’s one of those.”

Ambition

Putting aside Coutinho’s ties to Liverpool, there’s no doubting the Brazilian still remains a top-class player on his day.

Whilst Barcelona were seemingly happy enough to join up with Bayern Munich for this season on a loan deal, he has still produced some fairly impressive numbers in Germany. As per Transfermarkt, in his 32 games for the club, he has scored nine times and provided a further eight assists, and a return to the Premier League could see him hit top form again.

In fact, the very nature of him signing with Everton could give him that added chip on his shoulder of trying to prove Liverpool wrong. It could lead him to greater performances, and splashing out £80m on him would also be a major statement of intent that the Toffees mean business in the transfer market this summer.

Leeds should be worried as they once again rely on a late winner

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Leeds United grabbed their second late winner in the space of four days to extend their winning run to four in a row after beating Reading at the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Of course, this led to a number of supporters claiming that this was the stuff of champions and that this is how teams get promoted.

While the extra four points they’ve picked up in the final minutes of their last two games will help their cause, United supporters shouldn’t be so blindly optimistic after what were actually two sub-par performances.

The thing is, we’ve seen this all before. Last year Leeds were snatching wins at the death to keep them at the top of the league. Games against Aston Villa and Blackburn will live long in the memory, but rather than those victories being the hallmark of a team destined for promotion, they were a telling sign that Leeds’ performances were dropping off.

We don’t need to tell you what eventually happened last season, but this trend of relying on late winners should be setting alarm bells ringing rather than being something to celebrate.

If we were in the back end of the season and these results were being ground out then it’d be time to celebrate, but snatching wins against struggling sides such as Luton and Reading at this stage of the season is seemingly just symptomatic of poor performances that United have got away with.

Leeds haven’t been anywhere near their best in their last two games, and if they continue like that when they come up against another team challenging for promotion they could very easily be punished.

There’s no doubting that these six points could be valuable come the end of the season, but in all honesty, it won’t matter if Leeds continue to look as turgid as they did on Tuesday evening.

In other news, Leeds fans have been drooling over one academy player.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk must drop Keiren Westwood

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Sheffield Wednesday will aim to get back to winning ways this week as they face two matches in quick succession.

Garry Monk’s side were defeated 2-1 at the weekend by West Bromwich Albion, meaning it is now four straight matches without a victory and a third consecutive game where they have seen potential points slip through their grasp.

The 40-year-old has lambasted individual errors costing his side yet again, so it is about time he did something about it, starting with the number one culprit.

On the Chalkboard

Keiren Westwood has been an enormous part of Wednesday folklore for the best part of five years now, but his latest antics only go to show why it is best if Monk started to look more towards the future.

The 35-year-old saw a rush of blood to the head as he leapt off his line to swipe Matheus Pereira down inside the penalty area to hand Charlie Austin the winner courtesy of an 88th-minute spot-kick.

In the game before, against Swansea City, the veteran shot-stopper flapped at Ben Wilmot’s late, late equaliser.

By dropping Westwood, Monk can kill two birds with one stone.

Firstly, he’ll be removing one of the key instigators to their recent downfall and replacing him with a very fine backup in Cameron Dawson, who has kept four clean sheets in five appearances this campaign.

And secondly, the introduction of the 24-year-old will be the first step in reducing the average age of the squad ahead of a summer, which is potentially going to be a transitional period with over ten players out of contract.

Monk’s current side are the oldest in the division, while no player under the age of 23 has played a league game this term.

The Wednesday chief will also be able to get a proper look at Dawson and decide whether or not he’s worth keeping on past the season as he is one of the many players that sees his contract come to an end this summer.

Meanwhile, this Wednesday transfer target has continued to impress at his current club.

Spurs fans have called for Mauricio Pochettino to be sacked

Saturday was filled with frustration for many linked with Tottenham Hotspur, as they drew 1-1 against Sheffield United.

What makes the result even worse is that Spurs had 60.9% of possession, but only managed 1 more shot on target than the Blades, while having the same number of corners and dribbles.

Even the club’s Twitter admin sounded dejected when the final whistle was blown:

Plenty of the discontent many Spurs fans were feeling after the disappointment the game provided ended up working its way towards Mauricio Pochettino.

With the club currently sitting in the bottom half of the table, there are fans who feel now is the time for the Argentinian to leave the club.

There is a sign that Pochettino is aware of the pressure that is building on him, as he was quoted in football.london after the game as saying: “You expect better results than you get. Of course we are in a process to build and we’ll see if we have time to build what we want.”

A selection of Twitter reaction to the result, including posts from fuming Spurs fans, can be seen below:

Newcastle United fans discuss dropping cup competitions for Premier League results

A selection of Newcastle United supporters have taken to Twitter to debate whether or not their side should forget about competing in the cup competitions, in the hope of achieving better results in the Premier League under Steve Bruce.

The Magpies have taken two wins from a possible eight in the top-flight since Bruce filled the void in the dugout left by Rafael Benitez’s departure this summer, with both coming against two of last season’s top-six sides.

Victories over Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have only served to gloss over the cracks at St. James’ Park, however, as the Toon lost 3-1 at Norwich City with a shambolic defensive performance and were humiliated by Leicester City, when the Foxes ran out 5-0 victors.

Both wins to date succeeded the devastating defeats and Brendan Rodgers’ King Power Stadium natives eliminated Newcastle from this season’s Carabao Cup on penalties, as well, when the Magpies failed to convert their spot-kicks on home soil.

United now only look set to compete for Premier League survival and the FA Cup this term, and a discussion has sparked online over whether one should be prioritised over the other.

Many fans are set in their thinking that the knockout competitions should be respected, though, and feel anything other than trying would be a sign of supporters and the club lowering expectations.

Sheffield United wave goodbye to Ivy Lane ahead of FIFA 20 transformation

[ad_pod ]End of an era.Sheffield United have waved goodbye to their virtual ground Ivy Lane, which played host to the Blades on video game FIFA until their promotion to the Premier League this summer. Sadly, this means the computerised Ivy Lane faithful will take their somewhat fragile allegiances to the next promotion hopefuls in search of console-based glory. Plastics. It’s not the immense pot of television rights money handed to recently promoted sides that excites them anymore, nor the glory of playing in one of the most popular competitions in the world. Rather, it’s the added bonus of having your beloved football stadium constructed in complete detail by FIFA 20 publishers EA Sports.Watch Sheffield United Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

The latest ground to have enjoyed its FIFA makeover is Bramall lane. Fans can now score with Billy Sharp and friends and pinpoint the very seat they occupy every other week from the comfort of their own home; there’s no need to go to a game ever again! Sometimes it’s the small things in life, hey.

Unfortunately, as previously mentioned, this transformation does mean the bond with Ivy Lane has been severed. The club’s official Twitter paid homage to its former home in the only way possible, via a tweet…

It’s safe to say, you won’t find architecture like that anywhere else in the world. No, seriously, it’s made up.
