SPCL 2 – Academy victorious despite disaster start

The Hampshire Academy are Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 champions after pulling off their version of the Great Escape – and sending gallant Trojans down – at Stoneham Lane

Mike Vimpany01-Sep-2002The Hampshire Academy are Southern Electric Premier League, Division 2 champions after pulling off their version of the Great Escape – and sending gallant Trojans down – at Stoneham Lane.Requiring only two points to clinch the title, the Young Hawks were staring an unexpected defeat in the face when Jamie Donaldson (5-25) and Paul Douglas (3-28) sent them crashing to 8-5 and then 26-6.But a lower-order revival, initiated by Mitchell Stokes (26) and Ian Hilsum (24), and driven by a timely 44 not out by David Griffiths, lifted the Academy to a match-winning 132 all out."Some of the shot selection early on was poor, but Trojans bowled pretty well," reflected Academy skipper Tony Middleton."It was a great fightback by the lads. The lowerorder batted patiently and used their brains."Trojans, in a last-ditch bid to stave off relegation, got away to a flying start, but began to falter when Mario Mohammed was run-out, unwisely taking on Tony Middleton’s arm from the boundary. In between a brace by Lawrie Prittipaul (2-12), Trojans progressed to 48-1 through Simon Williams (21) and Donaldson (20) … only to lose four wickets for nine runs. The Academy spinners seized the initiative, with Ian Hilsum (4-21) removing the dangerous Donaldson before cutting through the tail to end Trojans gallant resistance at 112.The Academy’s 20-run win lifts the Young Hawks into the top tier of Premier League cricket next season – and sentences Trojans to a year in Division 3.It turned out that, even if the Academy had lost, they would still have won the championship – courtesy of Lymington’s victory at second-placed Easton & Martyr Worthy.Lymington won by 17 runs, with Australian all-rounder Aaron Heal narrowly missing the chance to take the Premier Division 2 batting award back to Perth when he managed only 26.It left Heal an agonising 13 runs adrift of Charlie Forward, the hard-hitting Old Tauntonians & Romsey left-hander, who finished the season with 642 runs to his credit.Instead it was Ben Craft, who had previously scored only one half-century in 14 knocks this season, who dominated Lymington’s 266-8.Craft struck a superb 110 – his century came off 85 balls – and, with Danny Peacock (46) in support, eased Lymington towards a formidable total.Despite being without influential captain Steve Green – who has been banned for two-matches and will miss the start of next season – Easton made a real fist of the run chase, finishing at 249 all out, with Andy Birch cracking 82.At the 25-over drinks break they were well placed at 109-2, Birch and Steve Ainsworth (31) scoring 81 off the initial 18 overs. When Easton dropped to 122-4, it appeared the chase might be up, but Mark Stone cracked 45 off 23 balls before becoming the 31st victim of the season for Heal (3-61).Even when Birch was run out at 200-6, Easton wouldn’t submit – Matt Bolland (24 not out) striking out before Peacock eventually grabbed the last wicket at 249.Sparsholt rattled up 267-6 at Burnaby Road and then clung on by the skin of their teeth as United Services hit back with 264-8.Ollie Kelly (59) anchored down the Sparsholt innings to hit a maiden SPL half-century and provide Kevin Foyle (50) and Rob Savage (74) with ideal support from which to build 267-6.Mark Toogood (52) prompted a lively US start, but it was during the flowing 123-run partnership between third-wicket pair Warren Gilmour (84) and Gary Hounsome (54) that Sparsholt really did come under the cosh. But, when Kelly’s teasing leg-spin breached Gilmour’s defences at 219-4, Services lost the impetus – five wickets falling for 28 runs before a frenetic finish left them three runs short at 264-8 (Andy Lang 3-53).Inspirational Max Smith was man-of-the-match for Old Tauntonians & Romsey, who beat ten-man Winchester KS by seven wickets.Smith ripped out Winchester’s middle-order, including top scorer Raj Naik (55), with a spell of 4-28 and then struck a match-winning 75 not out.Left-arm spinner Nick Wood (3-43) confirmed the Divisional bowling award with his 38th wicket of the season as Winchester were dismissed for 143 (Paul Baker 30).The visitors hit back with three wickets, but Smith’s 75 not out, supported by Mike Trodd (36 not out), steered OTR home with ease.Old Tauntonians’ victory means that Rowledge finished second-to-bottom – despite piling up a massive 323-6 at Hungerford.Chris Yates (124) and Nick Morrant (85) led the way for Rowledge, whose Premier 2 fate may now rest on what overall accreditation SPL grading junior-less Winchester receive.Australian Jeff Annings took 4-16 as Hungerford were dismissed for 108.

Sabres face another big match tomorrow at Taunton

Somerset find themselves staring relegation in the face in the NUL following their controversial defeat last week, and face a vitally important match this weekend. On Sunday they entertain Worcestershire at the County Ground in what will be a rehearsal for the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy quarter-final match later in the month. The black pear county are enjoying a run of good form in one-day cricket and are currently in second place in the table. The Sabres will be looking to make amends for the NUL defeat they suffered when the two sides met at New Road in May and for the Benson and Hedges defeat at Taunton a fortnight earlier.Sunday will also be a big day for Somerset’s popular wicket-keeper Rob Turner, who was born at Malvern, who has nominated this to be his benefit match.Somerset will go into the match without the services of their main strike bowler Richard Johnson, who is still recovering from a hamstring injury. Their bowling resources were even further depleted yesterday when Simon Francis, who gave his best display of the season against Surrey broke a finger, and will be sidelined for the next few weeks.Initially it had been hoped that Jamie Cox might have recovered from his broken thumb to face the Worcester Royals, but this now seems unlikely, and his return all being well will now be in the match against Yorkshire at Scarborough on Wednesday. The Somerset team will be: Matthew Wood, Piran Holloway, Mike Burns, Peter Bowler, Keith Parsons, Ian Blackwell, Rob Turner, Keith Dutch, Graham Rose, Matthew Bulbeck and Steffan Jones.Somerset coach Kevin Shine told me: "This is an important match for us, and after last week’s disappointments we will be looking for a result on Sunday."

Nielsen made Australian assistant coach

ADELAIDE, Aug 9 AAP – Australian cricket aims to lift its use of computer and video analysis with today’s appointment of South Australian assistant coach Tim Nielsen to the newly created role of Australian assistant coach.

Sam Lienert09-Aug-2002ADELAIDE, Aug 9 AAP – Australian cricket aims to lift its use of computer and video analysis with today’s appointment of South Australian assistant coach Tim Nielsen to the newly created role of Australian assistant coach.Nielsen, 34, will have a full-time position with dual roles as assistant to Australian team coach John Buchanan and the team’s performance analyst. He will start his job with next month’s tour to Sri Lanka for the International Cricket Council Champions Trophy.Nielsen, who played 101 first class matches for SA between 1990-91 and 1998-99, said his experience in applying technology in his role with the Redbacks had been a key to his appointment.”The role has two focuses, looking after the coaching side of things with John and helping out there, but also managing and implementing their technology side of things, using the video capture and statistical analysis work, and making that work a bit better,” he told reporters at Adelaide Oval.“That’s the major focus of the job, really.”They (the ACB) realise they’ve spent some money on getting the equipment and the software, it’s now a matter of using it as well as we can and getting the most out of it. We’ve got to make some value for the money.”He has been Redbacks assistant coach for the past three years.Nielsen expected his recent first class playing experience would also help.”I played against a lot of the blokes that are playing now, so that will hopefully break down a few of the barriers, we’ll just wait and see,” he said.ACB chief executive officer James Sutherland said Nielsen’s appointment would provide greater flexibility to the team’s coaching structure.”A need was identified for an extra coaching resource and further player performance analysis,” Sutherland said.”Tim comes to the ACB with an extremely impressive background.”

Liverpool: Reds eye Alexander Isak

Liverpool have entered the race to sign striker Alexander Isak from Real Sociedad, according to the print edition of Spanish newspaper AS (via Sport Witness).

The lowdown

The 21-year-old frontman scored 17 La Liga goals in 30 starts for Sociedad last season. His finest run of form came shortly after the turn of the year, when he netted nine goals in six matches, including a hat-trick against Alaves.

Isak is currently on Euro 2020 duty with Sweden, who have reached the round of 16. He has earned plaudits for his performances at the tournament, with Gary Lineker describing him as an ‘exceptional talent’.

Borussia Dortmund had a €30m (£25.8m) buyback option but, according to Marca, Sociedad reached an agreement with the Bundesliga outfit to remove that clause.

The latest

The report from AS claimed that the Premier League is ‘going crazy’ for Isak, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea all in the frame for his signature.

It seems that the Reds have yet to formalise their interest, though, and Sociedad are expected to demand that a €70m (£60.2m) release clause be paid in full.

Having secured Europa League football for the second consecutive season, the San Sebastian club are not thought to be under pressure to sell.

The verdict

Isak has been a joy to watch at the Euros, showcasing a delicate touch as he manoeuvres his way through challenges at will. It’s no surprise that he’s attracting interest, and Liverpool need a number nine to succeed Robert Firmino.

However, it’s very difficult to see them shelling out more than £60m on the Swedish prospect when another exciting talent in the form of PSV’s Donyell Malen may be available for less than half that price.

West Ham transfer update on Firpo

West Ham United have reportedly made an offer to try and sign Junior Firpo in the summer transfer window.

The Lowdown: Cresswell cover needed

Given that Arthur Masuaku missed a large chunk of the 2020/21 season through injury, the London Stadium faithful will need some more reliable cover for Aaron Cresswell come the start of the new term.

Cresswell can also play as central defender on the left of a back three, meaning that they would need other options in the left-back area if he plays there.

The Latest: Firpo offer

As per Mundo Deportivo (via Sport Witness), the East London club have made an offer to sign Firpo, which FC Barcelona are open to.

However, they face competition from both Southampton and AC Milan for his signature in what looks like a transfer saga that will drag on throughout the window.

The Verdict: Avoid

While Firpo is clearly a good player, having played in the UEFA Champions League a total of 10 times while with Barca over the course of the last two campaigns (Transfermarkt), David Moyes’ team should not be targeting another left-back whose game time has been limited.

Masuaku will want to prove his fitness in pre-season, and there are other positions that the Hammers should be prioritising, like finding cover up top for Michail Antonio.

Firpo is also on a whopping £105,000-per-week, which is simply too much for the Irons to dish out to a man who started just three league games last season, even if they can negotiate that number down a little.

Time surely up for Anderson at West Ham

West Ham flop Felipe Anderson is somehow a wanted man this summer…

What’s the word?

According to Corriere dello Sport, the 28-year-old winger dreams of a return to former club Lazio, where he is likely to be considered by newly-appointed manager Maurizio Sarri.

It’s thought that the Irons are willing to sell their one-time £35m club-record signing, who is now valued at just £9m by Transfermarkt, but for the time being, he’s set to return to the London Stadium following an unsuccessful loan spell at Porto.

The Brazilian has struggled throughout his time in the Premier League and current manager David Moyes is said to not be a fan of his, so it seems his future at the club is in jeopardy.

Time to go

Anderson returns to East London on the back of only ten appearances and 663 minutes of action for the Portuguese giants, in which he provided the one goal contribution, as per Transfermarkt.

That’s hardly done himself any favours, with the likes of Said Benrahma and Jarrod Bowen way ahead of him in the pecking order. If the Hammers’ hierarchy can offload him this summer, then they absolutely should get rid.

His record since arriving from the Italian side in the summer of 2018 has been pretty abysmal. He was a regular under Manuel Pellegrini last season before he was sacked, yet could only end the league campaign with one goal and four assists.

By comparison, Jesse Lingard was signed in January and finished this year with nine goals and four assists, as per WhoScored.

GSB have been paying the price for Manuel Pellegrini’s costly decision to sign him ever since.

Anderson is believed to be amongst the highest earners at the club, raking in a cool £85k-per-week and when you factor in the total £42m fee it cost to sign him, you begin to realise just how much has been wasted.

Overall, when excluding the stint at Porto this season, he has cost the club nearly £52m, which equates to £4.3m per goal scored (12 total) and a little over £722k per appearance (72 total).

Moyes isn’t the only Hammers-related man against the winger either. Former striker Frank McAvennie slammed him during an exclusive interview with Football FanCast, where he said:

“He’s got to go. Let the boy go.

“They bought him in and he’s a luxury player. I’ve never seen him go into a tackle, never mind win one. Talent in abundance, but he’s gone to Porto on loan, but has done the same there – just strolled about.

“He can’t come back to West Ham; they’ll want him off the wage bill.”

It’s time for Moyes to show no mercy and axe Anderson from the club this summer.

AND in other news, Moyes can ease the Hammers’ devastating Lingard blow with swoop for £18m-rated “special talent”…

Zimbabwe hold advantage at end of the first day against Bangladesh

Despite an impressive partnership between Mehrab Hussain (71) and Habibul Bashar (64), Bangladesh failed to take advantage of another rather disappointing performance by Zimbabwe’s bowlers and fielders. At the close they had 198 runs on the board for six wickets, with only Akram Khan of their top order remaining. For Zimbabwe, Raymond Price, with four wickets, had most reason to remember the day.Heath Streak, with some bitter experiences of the pitch behind him, put Bangladesh in to bat on winning the toss, expecting the usual early life. There was indeed a certain amount of movement, but it was not excessive and the bowlers did not bowl quite well enough to take full advantage of it. The outfield, dead slow for the one-dayers, had improved to be merely slow. After the first hour, it could almost be described as a 400-run pitch coupled with a 200-run outfield.Javed Omar was not to repeat his superb batting double of Bulawayo, as with only a single to his credit he snicked Streak to Andy Blignaut at third slip. Mehrab Hussain and Al Sahariar stood firm for a while against bowling that did not apply enough pressure and were helped by the occasional misfield. Then Streak showed what might have been achieved by consistent accuracy as Al Sahariar (11) failed to keep down a rising ball and was well held by the diving Grant Flower in the gully.Runs came at just under two an over, but it was not really an absorbing struggle. Bangladesh might have felt reasonably satisfied at lunch with two wickets down on a pitch assisting the bowlers had not Ray Price been brought on to bowl his left-arm spinners just before the break, and had Aminul Islam caught at slip by Alistair Campbell for 12. Mehrab was still there, having batted through the session for a watchful 21.With the pitch as usual playing more easily after lunch, Mehrab and Habibul Bashar settled in and then began to take toll of the bowling, choosing skillfully the right deliveries to hit. Mehrab enjoyed two lives, one early on and a second after reaching his 50. The scoring rate gradually increased and Zimbabwe toiled without taking any more wickets by tea. Mluleki Nkala was the most economical of the pace bowlers but Blignaut and Brighton Watambwa were wayward. After tea Bashar’s 50 was quickly followed by the century partnership, and the batsman celebrated by swinging Price over midwicket for six. At last the tourists were beginning to provide a much-needed wake-up call for Zimbabwe’s bowlers in this series. They added 114 for the fourth wicket before Bashar (64) leapt down the pitch to Price and was stumped. Shortly afterwards Mehrab (71) pulled the same bowler straight to Stuart Carlisle at midwicket and at 171 for five Bangladesh had undone much of their hard work. Their team would be disappointed that neither stayed for the really big innings required. The second new ball came with two new batsmen at the crease, but again Streak and Blignaut failed to use it to full advantage. Price returned after six overs with it and had Naimur Rahman (16) given out to a high-looking lbw decision just before the close. Akram Khan (15*) and Mushfiqur Rahman (0*) saw out the day.
