Tahir a challenge for de Villiers?

Imran Tahir is being saved as a secret weapon by South Africa for use in next month’s World Cup, but the opposition are not the only people he will catch by surprise. Wicketkeeper AB de Villiers has yet to stand behind the stumps to the Pakistan-born legspinner in a match situation.Adjusting to a wrist spinner, may prove a “challenge,” according to Daryn Smit, who is the wicketkeeper at the Dolphins franchise that Tahir plays for in domestic cricket. Tahir only moved to the Dolphins this season and Smit said he learnt to keep to the legspinner by playing against him previously. “I was lucky because I was able to pick him when I was facing him and that helped me when it came to keeping to him.”Tahir’s biggest variation from the legbreak is his googly, which is also his wicket-taking ball. “The only way to pick it is to watch how it comes out of the hand,” Smit said, indicating that it is not easily read off the pitch. “That’s the real difficulty, because you can’t be going one way for the legbreak and then he’s actually bowling a googly.”Even though Smit adjusted quickly to keeping to Tahir in the first-class competition, he still found it testing to do the job in the MTN40 limited overs tournament because of the number of day/night games. “Imran is harder to pick up at night, especially when he makes subtle changes with his hand,” Smit said. “Against a black sight-screen and under artificial lights, it takes some getting used to.” Three of South Africa’s six group stage matches are day-night affairs, including the opening match against West Indies. Both their warm-up games will be played under lights, so de Villiers should have at least one opportunity to get used to Tahir in the dark.It appears that de Villiers has a tricky job ahead of him, but Smit is confident in his ability to adjust to Tahir, having known de Villiers since his youth. “A lot of people say AB is a part-time keeper, but I know that he isn’t. At Under-19 level, I was the first-choice ‘keeper and he was the back-up and he was a good keeper,” Smit said.de Villiers is not the only one who will have to adjust to having Tahir in the side. South Africa have not had an aggressive spinner since Paul Adams and Graeme Smith will have to learn how to manage Tahir. “He is an attacking spinner and that means he is going to go for runs. It may mean setting slightly more defensive fields,” Smit said. He advised that a little bit of risk, in allowing Tahir to concede a few runs, will go a long way because “every time he bowls I feel he’s got a chance to take a wicket.”While Smit is looking forward to seeing how Tahir fits into the South Africa side, the bulk of his anticipation is reserved simply for watching his team-mate make his debut. He said that everyone in the Dolphins squad is eager to see Tahir bowl on the international stage. “In this one-day series [against India], we waited for the starting line up every game to see if he was there. We all know what a matchwinner he can be and we know he will do well.”Although Tahir has no international experience, Smit thinks he is more than ready to step up to the big stage. “He has over 500 wickets at first-class level and even though it is very different to international cricket, the years of experience will have set him up well. The conditions in the subcontinent should suit his bowling style.”If he offers the national team half of what he’s offered the Dolphins, they’ll do well.”

Celtic linked with Ola Solbakken

Celtic still have some important games left to play in the SPFL before the season draws to an end and the next summer transfer window opens for business.

However, it seems as though one potential deal has emerged as something the Bhoys could look to complete before their next campaign gets underway.

What’s the news?

According to the Daily Mail (via Daily Record), Bodo/Glimt star Ola Solbakken is a potential summer transfer target for the Hoops if they are unable to strike a permanent deal for current loan star Jota.

Since joining the Norwegian club back in the 2020 January transfer window, the 23-year-old has gone on to make 71 appearances for his side across all competitions.

In those appearances, the winger has managed to score 17 goals and provide 18 assists along the way.

This highlights just how much of an attacking threat he can be.

Postecoglou would love him

Throughout his career, the attacker has been deployed on the left and right wings, delivering goal contributions from both sides, showing just how versatile he is on the pitch.

In comparison to Solbakken, the Portuguese attacker has scored 11 goals and provided 12 assists in 35 appearances for the Bhoys across all competitions since his arrival from Benfica on loan last summer.

The Hoops will be very familiar with what sort of player Solbakken is, as he scored a goal and provided an assist during the two meetings between the clubs in the UEFA Europa Conference League earlier this season.

Currently valued at £1.8m according to Transfermarkt, the Norway international has been likened to former Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid winger Arjen Robben in terms of his attacking moves on the pitch. Moreover, he’s been likened to a certain Norwegian forward too with BT Sport describing one of his goals in Europe as having “serious Haaland vibes.”

Taking all of this into account, it’s safe to suggest that Postecoglou would be delighted to have a player like the Norwegian in his squad that is capable of scoring and creating goals as well as playing in numerous positions.

Moving forward, while securing a permanent deal for Jota should undeniably be their first port of call for the summer, having Solbakken as a potential backup option is not a bad one to have given his attacking talents.

Tottenham must sign Zaniolo this summer

Tottenham must swoop for Roma winger Nicolo Zaniolo this summer as manager Antonio Conte looks to bolster his squad in his first summer transfer window in charge of the north London club.

What’s the talk?

Reports from Italy have suggested that Spurs are following the 22-year-old closely, with Corriere della Sella (via Sport Witness) suggesting that the Italian knows that ‘decision time is approaching.’

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-martinez-dybala-spence-conte-2” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

The Roma star’s contract expires in 2024 and is yet to renew, meaning that the Serie A outfit may have to sell this summer, with a fee being quoted at around €80m (£66m).

Manager Antonio Conte is believed to be a big fan of the 22-year-old, having assessed the winger during his time as Inter Milan manager, as is Spurs managing director Fabio Paratici.

Tottenham must sign Zaniolo

Despite a season that has seen a managerial change, an early exit from the Europa Conference League and yet another campaign without silverware, Tottenham’s season could end with success with the Lilywhites still firmly in contention for a top-four spot.

Conte’s side are fourth with six games to go in the Premier League and will undoubtedly be a more attractive proposition for Zaniolo and other potential targets if they can offer Champions League football.

The 22-year-old has netted seven goals and assisted another eight in 35 appearances across all competitions this term whilst averaging a 7.31 match rating in the Europa Conference League.

In Serie A, the Italian’s rating is lower at 6.7, with the winger averaging a 78% passing accuracy whilst completing just under half of his dribbles at 49%. Moreover, Zaniolo likes to get forward, producing 2.6 shots a game.

Moreover, the 22-year-old has been integrated into the senior Italy set-up, earning nine caps and scoring two goals for the Azzuri.

There is plenty of excitement in Italy regarding the Roma starlet, with club legend Francesco Totti praising the winger back in 2018 by saying: “Zaniolo is explosive and he plays with an unusual ease. If he continues this way he could become a great player.”

With the Italian a right-sided winger, Zaniolo could complement the left-sided Heung-Min Son perfectly.

The South Korean has netted a whopping 17 Premier League goals this term as well as registering seven assists in the top-flight, numbers that Spurs will hope the 22-year-old can one day reach should he swap Rome for London.

Granted, £66m will be a significant fee for Spurs to pay to secure Zaniolo’s services, however, with Conte a big fan, the deal could prove to be well worth it in the long run.

Tottenham enter Milinkovic-Savic race

According to local outlet La Lazio Siamo Noi, Tottenham Hotspur could make a shock attempt to sign Lazio star Sergej Milinković-Savić as they share an update out of N17.

The Lowdown: Conte issues transfer demands…

Spurs head coach Antonio Conte, reportedly already making demands behind-the-scenes, has apparently earmarked a few key areas of the squad he wants to strengthen this summer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Alongside the addition of a left-sided central defender, the Lilywhites allegedly have midfielders on the agenda, including Brentford playmaker and former star Christian Eriksen.

Conte has also specifically requested the signing of Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie (La Gazetta dello Sport via Sport Witness) with the Spurs manager and transfer chief Fabio Paratici now seemingly setting their sights on another Serie A star.

The Latest: Milinković-Savić on the agenda?

As per the latest from Italy, both Paratici and Conte are ‘crazy’ about Lazio star Milinković-Savić – so much so that Spurs cannot be ruled out of the race to sign him, even despite his lofty €75-80 million price tag (£62m-£66m).

Indeed, Tottenham ‘could really make an attempt’ to sign the midfielder, but a lot will depend on their qualification for Champions League football before lodging a major summer bid.

The Verdict: Big update…

Links to a player of Milinkovic-Savic’s calibre perhaps demonstrate just how far Tottenham have come under Conte this season.

AC Milan legend and Parma sporting director Demetrio Albertini is one Italian footballing icon who has lavished praise on the marquee 27-year-old – calling him a player with ‘extraordinary’ elegance.

A well-rounded star in the middle of the park, Milinkovic-Savic has averaged the highest match rating out of any Lazio player this season in Serie A whilst making the joint-most tackles per 90 (WhoScored).

He’s also effective going forward, ranking among Lazio’s top three players for most shots at goal per 90, most key passes and successful take-ons (WhoScored).

It’s clear to see why Conte and Paratici are head over heels, and with this news emerging, Tottenham’s possible top-four finish comes as even more crucial.

A Chapecoense começou a partida botando pressão no Nacional.

A Chapecoense abatida, recuou.

Tendulkar rested for Asia Cup, Yuvraj dropped

The BCCI has accepted Sachin Tendulkar’s request to be rested for the Asia Cup and has not included him in the squad for the tournament in Sri Lanka. Yuvraj Singh and Yusuf Pathan have been dropped, while Saurabh Tiwary, the Jharkhand batsman, has received his maiden call-up in a 15-man team that is significantly stronger than the side which failed to qualify for the tri-series final in Zimbabwe.MS Dhoni comes back to captain a team that is bolstered by the return of Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Praveen Kumar and Ashish Nehra.Ashok Dinda, the Bengal fast bowler, and R Ashwin, the Tamil Nadu offspinner, who were part of the Indian squad for the tri-series in Zimbabwe, have been retained.Tiwary, 20, was one of the finds for Mumbai Indians during the IPL this year, where he struck three fifties in their run to the final. That was preceded by a successful domestic season, where, playing for Jharkhand in the Ranji Trophy Plate League, he scored three centuries in five games at an average of 98.83.Yuvraj has been struggling with a wrist injury and fitness problems in the recent past. He was recently issued a show-cause notice by the BCCI for being involved in a pub brawl in St Lucia on the day India were knocked out of the World Twenty20. Yusuf hasn’t been able to replicate his IPL success in international cricket. He has two half-centuries in 37 ODIs, and averaged just 10.50 in the World Twenty20.Kris Srikkanth, the BCCI’s chairman of selectors, said fielding and fitness were two important factors considered when picking the squad. “A lot of stress was given on the fitness of the players. Fitness and fielding are very important. We have gone through the record of last one year and put lot of stress on it. In recent past, we lost some matches or struggled in some matches because of poor fielding,” he told reporters. “We also put stress on consistent performances. Lot of players have done consistently well and apart from the seniors, we have blooded some youngsters as well so that they know what international cricket is all about.”The BCCI, in its media release, stated that Tendulkar wanted to spend time with his children, in view of the hectic schedule ahead.Squad: MS Dhoni (capt & wk), Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, Ravindra Jadeja, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Zaheer Khan, Ashish Nehra, Pragyan Ojha, Ashok Dinda, R Ashwin, Saurabh Tiwary.

BCCI cancels IPL rights deal with WSG

The BCCI has terminated its IPL media license agreement with WSG (Mauritius) over the payment the Rs 425 crore-facilitation fee by MSM to WSG

Tariq Engineer and Nagraj Gollapudi30-Jun-2010The BCCI has terminated all its IPL media license agreements with sports marketing agency World Sports Group (Mauritius) over the payment of the Rs 425 crore-facilitation fee (about US$90m) by the parent company of the tournament’s Indian broadcast partner to WSG. The board claimed it was rightfully owed the money as the rights to the tournament were with the BCCI.Facilitation fee timeline

January 2008: BCCI sells worldwide IPL rights to WSG for over $1 billion for 10 years; MSM gets India rights for five years from WSG.
March 2009: IPL cancels its original deal with WSG and renegotiates a new nine-year deal worth $1.6 billion. MSM objects and takes IPL to court.
March 2009: IPL agrees to sell MSM the India rights. WSG agrees to relinquish the India rights for a facilitation fee of Rs 425 crores, but retains the international rights.
June 2010: BCCI learns of facilitation fee agreement with WSG; claims it should have been paid the fee instead. MSM agrees to pay the fee to BCCI.
June 2010: BCCI cancels all existing IPL rights deals with WSG.

In a letter sent to WSG India dated June 28th, a copy of which is with Cricinfo, board secretary N. Srinivasan reiterated that the BCCI knew nothing about the agreement between MSM (Satellite) PTE LTD and WSG and therefore could not be a party to it.”BCCI was never made aware of any agreement between MSM (Satellite) PTE LTD and your affiliate WSG (Mauritius) Limited for payment of facilitation fee to WSG (Mauritius) Limited,” the letter said. “This agreement titled as “Deed for the provision of facilitation services” was brought to our notice by MSM (Satellite) PTE LTD only recently and it was admitted to us by them than an amount of Rs 125 crores has in fact been paid by then to WSG (Mauritius) Limited. These amounts constituting so called facilitation fees are actually amounts due to the BCCI.”The facilitation fee arose out of the restructuring of the television rights deal following the first IPL. WSG India had originally bought the worldwide telecast rights of the IPL for ten years (2008 to 2017) at a cost of over $1 billion. Meanwhile MSM had secured the rights to broadcast in India for five years (2008 to 2012) from WSG and had the option of securing the rights for the remaining five years (2013-2017) by paying WSG an option fee of $25 million. However, the board cancelled the original rights deal in 2009 and renegotiated with WSG (Mauritius). But MSM did not want to renegotiate with WSG, preferring a direct contract with the board instead. The result was that MSM eventually signed a deal with the BCCI for the India rights at the same price and duration as WSG (Mauritius), in lieu of the latter relinquishing those rights. The eventual nine-year deal was worth Rs 8200 crores (US$1.6b) for both the India and international rights. Under its agreement with the BCCI, WSG still retained the international media rights for the IPL.Since WSG stepped aside, MSM apparently agreed to pay it a facilitation fee amounting to Rs 425 crores as compensation. It has already paid WSG Rs 125 crores and was to pay the balance over the next seven years. On discovering the payment, the board called it “improper” and has now reclaimed the IPL media rights originally sold to WSG. Meanwhile MSM agreed last week to pay the BCCI the facilitation fee of Rs 425 crores and has filed a suit in the Bombay High Court to recover the Rs 125 crores it has already paid to WSG.

Tahir dominates before Mustard counterpunch

Phil Mustard opened a new chapter in his career at Edgbaston, making his first century in the County Championship since taking over as Durham’s captain

30-May-2010
ScorecardPhil Mustard opened a new chapter in his career at Edgbaston, making his first century in the County Championship since taking over as Durham’s captain. He was last man out for 100 – his second 50 coming from only 38 balls – after countering a return of 8 for 114 by Warwickshire’s Imran Tahir. The Pakistan-born wrist spinner twice took two wickets from three balls in registering the best figures by a slow bowler against Durham since they joined the Championship in 1992. But Tahir’s outstanding performance, the best for Warwickshire since 2002, was not enough to dampen Durham’s resurgence after their recent problems. The reigning champions took their total to 379 before Mustard became Tahir’s final victim, holing out on the leg side immediately after reaching his third first-class hundred with his second six.Facing 140 balls in all, he also hit nine fours in leading his side into a strong position which was underpinned when Darren Maddy departed in Mitchell Claydon’s first over as Warwickshire replied with 18 for 1.Quickly rebounding from a heavy defeat by Kent last week, Durham began the second day strongly as Mark Stoneman and Gordon Muchall extended their second-wicket stand to 153 in 45 overs. Stoneman (77) compiled his first Championship half-century since scoring 64 in the corresponding fixture at Edgbaston last June and Muchall (60) went beyond 50 for the first time since his unbeaten 106 against Sussex at Hove in May last year.Things only changed with the introduction of Tahir. Relishing an opportunity to bowl on a dry pitch, he made a breakthrough with three wickets in 15 balls without conceding a run. After dismissing Muchall, lbw playing from the crease, he continued to use the googly to good effect. Richard Johnson, called up in place of the omitted Tim Ambrose, stumped Stoneman when the opener lost his balance, and Maddy held a slip chance from Ian Blackwell.Ben Stokes sparked off another clutch of wickets for Tahir after lunch with a slog to Jim Troughton at wide mid on. Dale Benkenstein was next to go, lbw for 26 and Scott Borthwick thrashed a long hop to midwicket.Tahir ended his two spells, one from each end, with 6 for 73 but a change of tack failed to pay off for Warwickshire. With Mustard restricting himself to four boundaries in his first 50, Durham were able to rebuild after the home side had taken the new ball.Liam Plunkett was a positive partner in an eighth-wicket stand of 95 from 28 overs. The former England seamer made 41 from 85 balls before he was bowled, playing defensively, on Tahir’s return to the attack.
