'He's not Daniel Munoz' – Amad Diallo told he's a 'worry' at Man Utd as 'rabbit in headlights' Patrick Dorgu is singled out by former Premier League-winning defender

Amad Diallo has been told he remains a "worry" for Manchester United as the Ivory Coast international is "not Daniel Munoz" when it comes to filling a wing-back role. Paul Parker has also explained to GOAL why Patrick Dorgu is a source of concern, with the Denmark international often looking like a "rabbit in headlights" when it comes to defending.

  • Amorim system: Portuguese sticking with 3-4-3 formation

Ruben Amorim has continued to favour a 3-4-3 system across his reign at Old Trafford, despite facing plenty of questions when it comes to that tactical approach. United have been accused of lacking the players to meet the demands of their Portuguese head coach.

Defenders more accustomed to filling full-back roles, such as Diogo Dalot, are required to offer width and attacking threat on the flanks, while natural wingers – such as Amad – are often asked to track back into positions that feel slightly alien to them.

Premier League rivals have acquired performers that fit the wing-back mould, with Crystal Palace star Munoz considered to be the poster boy for that role – with the Colombia international as comfortable flying forward as he is helping out at the back. United are still looking for options that tick both of those boxes.

No Munoz: Amad uncomfortable in wing-back role

Premier League title winner Parker admits as much, with the former United right-back – speaking in association with gambling portal British Gambler – telling GOAL of obvious areas that are in need of reinforcement at Old Trafford: "You look at it and it isn’t about one player with Manchester United. You are, in my opinion, looking across the line of midfield – that’s including the wing-backs, the four right across that area. All of those areas could do with bits at the moment.

"There are good bits, good bits with Amad playing as a wing-back – really good bits – but there are still those bits you worry about because he’s not a Munoz. You look at him at Crystal Palace, and he’s [Amad] not him. He can beat people one-on-one a lot more times but you are looking at the longer game, the bigger picture, and Munoz will offer you more on a regular basis than Amad does attacking-wise and defensively.

"You look on the left side with Dalot, and Dorgu is lacking confidence. He is a different player when he plays for Denmark, he looks a different player. There are too many players, we are seeing two of them at Napoli – not so much with Scott McTominay but you saw it with [Rasmus] Hojlund that he just couldn’t evolve at Manchester United. Dorgu at this moment is like a rabbit in the headlights."

  • Dorgu concerns: Dane still searching for a spark

Amorim has conceded that Dorgu, who moved to Manchester from Lecce for £25 million ($33m) in January 2025, is still searching for a spark in English football. He has said of the 21-year-old: "When I see them training they are doing so much better than in games. Then Patrick, when I see him playing for the national team, he’s scored a great goal against Scotland, the decision that he made under pressure was completely different [to calmly sidefoot home] to the decision[s] he’s making in our team. You can feel the anxiety every time Patrick touches the ball. I can feel it, the anxiety."

Amorim has also said of efforts being made across transfer windows to get more bodies on board: "We need time to improve the characteristics of the team. I've said that. It is these characteristics that in time we will try to get to be a better team. If we are the perfect set-up to play in this way, not yet. But like any team, we need time to put the right characteristics into every position."

Transfer plans: Will Man Utd spend again in 2026?

United are expected to spend again in 2026, in January and over the summer, with it possible that they will look to bring in more wing-backs – with specialists required in order for full potential to be unlocked in Amorim’s tactical blueprint.

Australia allrounder Matt Short prefers opening the batting, but has revealed his best chance of playing at next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka is in the middle and lower order. The 29-year-old toured the West Indies for Australia’s underwhelming 2024 World Cup showing as a reserve player outside of the 15-man squad and did not play. The current T20 series against India, which concludes in Queensland with matches on the Gold Coast and at the Gabba, has a lot riding on it for Short.Related

His best innings for Australia, including a dynamic 66 off 30 deliveries against South Africa in 2023, have come as an opener. However, Short, who played his first two matches of the current series at No.7, has been given a clear picture of his path to T20 World Cup inclusion by the side’s brains trust.”Personally I think I am suited to the top of the order, but having conversations with selectors and coaching staff, I think, looking forward to that T20 World Cup, I know that our top four or five is going to be pretty locked in,” Short said.”If I was to make the XI in the World Cup, I think my best chances are in the middle or lower order. We are probably using this series to see guys in different positions and looking ahead to that World Cup.”[To play at the World Cup] would be massive. 'I've forgiven Jose Mourinho' – Ex-Real Madrid winger opens up on issue with Portuguese coach after famous Zinedine Zidane and Diego Maradona jibe

Pedro Leon has opened up on his turbulent spell under Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid, insisting he has “forgiven” the Portuguese coach despite the harsh treatment he received. The former winger recalled the infamous “he’s not Zinedine Zidane or Diego Maradona” jibe and revealed how the controversy still shapes how he views his career more than a decade later.

Leon revisits fallout with Mourinho at Real Madrid

The former Madrid winger has reflected on his difficult relationship with coach Mourinho during their time together at Santiago Bernabeu, more than 14 years after their infamous fallout. Speaking on , the current Real Murcia midfielder revisited the controversy that erupted when Mourinho publicly downplayed his importance to the squad with a brutal remark comparing him unfavourably to Zidane and Maradona.

“It seems like people are talking about Zidane or Maradona,” Mourinho said at the time when asked why Leon had not been selected for a Champions League clash against Auxerre. “A couple of days ago he was playing at Getafe.” The comment instantly made headlines, turning Leon into the symbol of Mourinho’s tough-love approach and sparking widespread debate among Madrid fans.

Leon, who joined Madrid in 2010 for €10 million after an impressive spell at Getafe, saw his opportunities quickly fade. He would go on to make just 14 appearances under Mourinho before being loaned out and eventually returning to Getafe. Yet despite the disappointment, Leon insists he has no bitterness toward his former coach.

AdvertisementAFP'I’ve forgiven Mourinho' – Leon speaks out

Now 38 and playing for Real Murcia, Leon says he has made peace with the past. “I have forgiven Mourinho,” he said. “I think that otherwise my sporting career might have been different… but I don’t hold a grudge against him.”

Leon also downplayed the infamous “Zidane or Maradona” line, saying that it was not the insult itself that hurt him, but the lack of understanding behind it. “I’ll be honest with you. It didn’t hurt. That didn’t hurt. What hurt was not knowing why. And to this day I still don’t know,” he explained.

“I didn’t disrespect Mourinho or anything like that,” he said. Addressing long-standing rumours that he had failed to warm up properly during a match against Levante, an accusation that former Madrid goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek later confirmed in his autobiography, Leon insisted those claims were untrue. “You can watch that match. At no point did I make a scene, nor did I disrespect him or anything like that,” he said.

The locker room incident: What really happened at Levante?

According to Dudek’s autobiography, , the tensions between Leon and Mourinho reached boiling point during a La Liga match against Levante. The Polish goalkeeper wrote that Mourinho had been left furious after seeing Leon fail to properly warm up before being substituted on during the second half of the 0-0 draw.

“Mourinho told him to warm up but instead of doing so, he just stood around by the corner flag. I saw his reaction. He was furious,” Dudek wrote. The goalkeeper added that Mourinho confronted Leon after the match, telling him: “You lack professionalism. You think you’re pulling the wool over my eyes and your teammates’. You had two clear chances to score but you weren’t up to it. You want to play for Real Madrid? Here everybody gets their five minutes and you’ve had yours.”

The next day, Mourinho reportedly continued his tirade in training and dropped Leon from the squad to face Auxerre, instead calling up youth player Juan Carlos. “He turned around and asked, ‘How old are you?’ The boy said 19. ‘Do you want to play for Real Madrid?’ Mourinho continued, wanting to send out a message.

While Leon has always maintained his professionalism, these revelations illustrate how quickly Mourinho’s perception of the winger shifted, from a promising signing to a cautionary tale within weeks.

Getty Images SportLeon claims Mourinho blocked Chelsea and Man City offers

In a separate interview with , Leon revealed that Mourinho not only sidelined him at Madrid but also prevented him from leaving. “I had another offer from City, Chelsea and Milan,” he said. “Some wanted to sign me in winter but Mourinho didn’t let me go.”

At the time, City and Chelsea were among several top clubs tracking Leon, whose breakout performances at Getafe had earned him a reputation as one of Spain’s brightest wide talents. His inability to secure a move, coupled with limited opportunities at Madrid, derailed his progress and led to years of stagnation before reviving his career at Eibar and Murcia.

Reflecting on that period, Leon’s tone was more nostalgic than bitter. “Is Mourinho a good coach? He’s a good motivator, especially at the beginning. He arrives and you believe in the message. You buy into it,” he said. When asked if he missed his old boss, Leon laughed: “What if we miss a coffee? No. It’s not a problem, he’s fine in Portugal and I’m in Murcia.”

Leon's time at Real Madrid may have been short-lived, but his reflections reveal the human side of an era dominated by Mourinho’s intensity. A gifted right winger with technical flair and creativity, Leon became one of several players who struggled to fit into the Portuguese coach’s demanding, results-driven environment. His words reflect both maturity and closure, a reminder of how players and coaches often move on from the storms that once defined them.

Latham hundred leads Bears mauling of Derbyshire

Opening partnership with Alex Davies decisive as Falcons plummet to bottom of North Group

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay18-Jul-2025A dazzling century from Tom Latham inspired the Bears to a 127-run victory over Derbyshire Falcons at the Central Co-op County Ground and a place in the Vitality Blast quarter-finals.Latham hit eight sixes in a 51-ball 104 and shared an opening stand of 187 from 98 balls with Alex Davies whose 89 off 54 included six maximums.Although Ben Aitchison took three wickets in the last over to finish with 4 for 45, the Bears rattled up 233 for 5 with Falcons skipper Samit Patel finishing wicketless in his last game before leaving the club. The 40-year-old allrounder also failed with the bat as his side slipped to 41 for 4 at the end of the powerplay and ended on 106 with Jake Lintott taking 3 for 27 while Richard Gleeson claimed 2 for 9 and Danny Briggs 2 for 13.Latham and Davies laid the platform for what was to come, moving to 44 at the end of the powerplay.Davies greeted Patel’s last spell as a Falcons player by sweeping his first ball for six and Latham launched Zak Chappell high over midwicket for another maximum in the next over.Latham pulled Aitchison for six on his way to a 30-ball 50 and at the half way point the pair were motoring along at just under 10 an over with the Bears on 97 without loss.Patel bowled two wides at the start of his second over and was then swept for another big six by Latham.Mohammad Ghazanfar conceded only five from the 12th over but the Falcons were struggling to contain the pair with Davies sweeping Alex Thomson for six to reach his 50 from 37 balls. 4-2-3-1 manager who Glasner called "amazing" now being targeted by Man Utd

A manager who Oliver Glasner described as “amazing” is now being targeted by Manchester United as a replacement for Ruben Amorim.

Amorim under fire after Brentford defeat

After the 3-1 defeat against Brentford over the weekend, Amorim is under fire once again, with Jamie Carragher describing the 40-year-old’s time at the club as a “disaster”, and suggesting it is “inevitable” he will be sacked.

It is also revealed that just one of the 17 ever-present Premier League clubs have collected fewer points than Amorim since his arrival at Old Trafford, underlining just how poor Man United have been under the helm of the former Sporting CP boss.

Alan Shearer has suggested that the only reason INEOS haven’t dismissed the manager already is because they don’t want to admit they got another decision wrong, saying: “I genuinely believe that the owners or the people that are running the club at the minute have made that many errors in the last two years or 18 months since they’ve been there. It would look terrible to admit another error and sack (Amorim).”

That said, the United hierarchy are clearly now planning for life after Amorim, with a report from The Sun revealing that Brighton & Hove Albion boss Fabian Hurzeler is now under consideration as a replacement for the Portuguese manager.

Fabrizio Romano says legendary 4-3-3 manager wants Amorim's job at Man Utd

He’s previously won a top-flight title and enjoyed a distinguished playing career.

BySean Markus Clifford Sep 29, 2025

INEOS are said to have drawn up a three-man shortlist, which also includes Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner and AFC Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola, with the board evidently keen on bringing in a proven Premier League manager.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe is still backing Amorim for the time being, but contingency plans are now being put in place, with Hurzeler one of the managers being targeted, having performed well at Brighton, leading the Seagulls to an eighth-placed finish last season.

"Amazing" Hurzeler impressing in first Premier League job

At 32-years-old, the Brighton boss is the youngest manager in the Premier League, but he has shown maturity beyond his years, with Glasner being left particularly impressed by the work his opposite number has done in England and Germany.

The Palace manager said: “He did an amazing job in Germany with St. Pauli. Also, what I always like with every manager is when you can see a clear style of playing and this is what he implemented in Germany, in St. Pauli, and what he implemented here with Brighton.

“He does a fantastic job there.”

The German has averaged 1.70 points per match during his time with the Seagulls, having taken charge of 53 matches, suggesting he would be a big upgrade on Amorim, with the United boss averaging 1.35 over 49 games with the Red Devils.

With the former St Pauli boss preferring to implement a 4-2-3-1 system, appointing the up-and-coming manager could mean a welcome return to four-at-the-back for Man United, amid widespread calls for Amorim to tinker with his system.

That said, it would be a risk to appoint Hurzeler, given his age, with United perhaps in need of a more experienced manager, who has a proven track record at some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

The wages Bukayo Saka is poised to earn from new deal with Arsenal timeline given

Arsenal winger Bukayo Saka is next in line for a new contract after sporting director Andrea Berta managed to tie down William Saliba, with a report sharing how much the England star is in line to earn at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal agree new William Saliba deal with Bukayo Saka up next

Mikel Arteta was gifted an almighty boost by the news that Saliba has agreed an extension which will keep him at the club until 2030.

Reports suggest the 24-year-old, who was attracting serious interest from Real Madrid, could be on for a huge pay rise of up to £300,000-per-week (Dean Jones) as a result of his new terms — which would make him Arsenal’s highest earner.

It is just reward for a player who has established himself as one of Europe’s finest centre-backs, with Arsenal conceding the fewest goals of any Premier League side in each of the last two seasons thanks to Saliba’s exceptional form with Gabriel.

The defensive duo have formed a near-unbreakable partnership since the beginning of 2022/2023, and managing to keep Saliba out of Real’s clutches sends a very clear message to the rest of Europe — Arsenal are here to stay.

According to insider ‘HandOfArsenal’, Saliba and Gabriel made a summer pact to remain at Arsenal in pursuit of silverware, with star winger Saka lined up for a new deal after the France international.

The wages Bukayo Saka could earn from new Arsenal deal

Saka has made it clear he wants to sign a new Arsenal contract, in what is another major boost for the north Londoners (Ben Jacobs), and it is now the task of Berta to negotiate favourable terms.

According to Football Transfers, Arsenal are optimistic that they can finalise a new contract with the 24-year-old by Christmas, and Saka is in line to earn around £250,000-per-week to place him among the club’s biggest earners.

That being said, this figure is still behind the likes of Kai Havertz, Gabriel Jesus and now Saliba, and this small detail is expected to be key in discussions. It isn’t ruled out that Berta could go even higher with his salary offer in an attempt to push Saka towards a full agreement in the next few months.

Arsenal are apparently determined to get this resolved soon and Saka’s extension is viewed as a “priority” by Arteta, with talks ongoing and progressing well.

Speaking to the press before their imminent clash against Newcastle United, Arteta made his feelings about Saka crystal clear.

The forward has racked up 71 goals and 71 assists in 267 appearances since making his senior debut against Vorskla Poltava in 2018, and was Arsenal’s best-performing player by average match rating in three of their last four Premier League seasons (WhoScored).

His presence is absolutely vital, even if Saka’s struggle with injuries means Arteta needs to be careful with the winger — even more so now that in-form summer signing Noni Madueke will be out for several weeks.

Manchester United are in deadline day contact to sign a £45m “machine” who is similar to former Red Devils midfielder Scott McTominay.

Man Utd agree deal to sign new goalkeeper for Amorim

Ruben Amorim looks set to welcome at least one new signing on deadline day, with an agreement now reached for Man Utd to sign Royal Antwerp goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

United will fork out a total of €21m (£18.2m) to sign Lammens after shaky starts to the season from both Altay Bayındir and Andre Onana.

After Lammens’ transfer goes through, Man Utd’s summer spending will jump to more than £220m, the majority of which have been spent on attackers, and it looks as if INEOS are exploring a late loan move for a midfield target.

Gallagher, dubbed a “machine” has certainly made an impression under Diego Simeone, with the Atletico Madrid boss praising the Englishman earlier this year.

“When we think of him we think of his youth, energy and intensity in the game. He also strikes the ball very well. It’s never easy for players coming from England to adapt to the Spanish championship, to the language. He has competed very well in different places and in positions where he doesn’t feel more comfortable.

“He will evolve, he has room for growth. He is very intense in offensive and defensive play, he brings a lot to us.”

Rodgers' "underrated" Celtic star is in danger of becoming the next Idah

The circus surrounding Celtic’s transfer business will now have to be put to one side, ahead of the return of domestic action this weekend.

The fallout of what went on this summer continues, however, with it yet to be seen just how Brendan Rodgers’ side will be impacted by their lack of adequate investment, particularly in the centre-forward ranks.

At present, the Northern Irishman has been left with a pool of strikers that all have question marks around them, in the form of Shin Yamada, Johnny Kenny, Callum Osmand and late arrival, Kelechi Iheanacho.

The experienced Nigerian – who has been snapped up from Sevilla on a free transfer – scored just four times for the LaLiga side and for Middlesbrough last term, albeit while having previously flourished under Rodgers at Leicester City.

With the Hoops boss now pondering how to get the best out of the 28-year-old again, attention turns to the man he has replaced, Adam Idah, with the Republic of Ireland international departing for Swansea City following a mixed time at Parkhead.

How Idah compares to recent Celtic strikers

It is difficult to know quite what to make of Idah’s spell in Glasgow, with the 24-year-old enjoying notable highs, albeit while failing to truly deliver on a consistent basis.

Nine goals during just 19 games of his initial loan spell makes for good reading, as does his return of 20 goals in all competitions last term, despite having started just 26 games, as per Transfermarkt.

In his own words, the former Norwich City man felt that such an impact went “a bit unnoticed”, albeit with it hard to argue against his disappointing overall record of just 29 goals in 76 games in total in green and white.

Considering his £9m price tag, the man who previously scored just 17 senior goals at Carrow Road certainly underdelivered, having failed to hit the heights of those who came before him in recent times.

Of course, former teammate Kyogo Furuhashi is the gold standard when it comes to modern Celtic strikers, although even the likes of Georgios Giakoumakis fared far better, having almost matched Idah’s tally from 19 fewer games.

Odsonne Edouard – signed from PSG for a similar fee of £9m – also enjoyed a far more fruitful spell in Scotland, as did his predecessor Moussa Dembele, with the French duo playing a starring role as the club’s attacking figurehead.

Despite his £9m price tag and number nine shirt, Idah, by contrast, never truly earned such lofty status. A swift exit has now been secured, with it yet to be seen if history will repeat itself in the case of a certain Arne Engels.

The Celtic star in danger of being the next Adam Idah

The burden of a significant price tag can weigh heavy, as the case of Idah shows, with Celtic perhaps somewhat fortunate to have recouped a fair chunk of their initial investment, amid the Irishman’s £7m deadline day departure.

Time will tell whether the club will go on to cash in on young Engels for a far more handsome fee later down the line, with the £11m signing enduring his own turbulent time of things at Celtic Park thus far.

As Rodgers has been at pains to stress on numerous occasions, at 22, the promising Belgian is “nowhere near the finished article”, with there perhaps a need to look beyond the eye-catching nature of that transfer fee.

He is a player of “potential” according to his manager – having also been described as “so underrated” by talent scout Jacek Kulig – with time needing to be given for the midfielder to properly bed in at Celtic, considering his relative youth.

That being said, as was the case with Idah, that £11m figure will hang like an albatross around his neck if he continues to underwhelm, with the youngster having also dipped in and out of the side over the last 12 months or so.

Indeed, the early weeks of the new season have seen Engels start just three of a possible seven games, including a disappointing outing against Rangers, having notably been introduced off the bench for both legs of the shock defeat to Kairat Almaty in Champions League qualifying.

A return of 24 goals and assists in 59 games in all competitions to date is certainly reason for optimism, although the former FC Augsburg man is yet to truly stamp his authority on this Celtic side, having notably been usurped by summer signing Benjamin Nygren in the midfield pecking order.

With a swift departure having actually been touted over the summer, it already looks like the four-cap international could head the same way as Idah in the near future, should his standing not improve under Rodgers.

That night in Munich has highlighted what he can produce when at his best, with time still on his side to prove a success in a Celtic.

That said, if he’s not careful, Engels could well prove to be the club’s next Idah as another expensive gamble that has gone awry.

Isak thinks he's "fearless": Celtic are now brewing their next Matt O'Riley

Celtic are brewing their next Matt O’Riley with this versatile attacking star at Parkhead.
