'My career hasn't always been on an even keel' – Hayden

More than a year after he last wore green and gold, Matthew Hayden returnsto the one-day arena on Monday, desperate to further his chances ofclinching a place on the flight to the World Cup next March. AdamGilchrist should take one of the opening slots, and Hayden is just one ofmany contenders for the other. In recent times, Australia have tried outthe likes of Phil Jaques and Shane Watson at the top of the order, whileMark Cosgrove, the exciting new boy from South Australia, also enjoyed astellar ING Cup season while playing as opener.Hayden, though, is just happy to be back. “It’s been a long time since Iplayed one-day cricket for Australia,” he said, talking to the media atthe team hotel. “I’d like to think that performances in Test cricket haveprobably led me to this position. Like the selectors, I’ve got short-termand long-term goals. The short-term goal is obviously to play well in thenext two games, and then have wonderful preparation up to the Ashes.”Though he can expect to get two or three games here, Hayden is not part ofthe squad for the Champions Trophy, despite averaging 40.10 from 119games. But while admitting that he was disappointed to miss out on anotherIndian adventure, he said that his fate was indicative of the greatstrength in depth that Australia possess. “My career hasn’t always been onan even keel,” he said. “I’ve always had to fight hard for my position, and that’s the great strength of this wonderful side, the fact thateveryone puts themselves in a position every day to be the best cricketerthey can be. Over, the years, I’ve done that. I’ve promised the selectorsruns, in all forms of the game, right from club cricket.”The reason Australian cricket is so strong is because blokes like me aresitting on the fringe after having played 120 games of one-day cricket, and still looking to play, still looking to train hard and perform everygame. Now, if a senior player can be in that position, what’s that sayingto a junior player?”Hayden would also have been reassured by the vote of confidence fromAndrew Hilditch, chairman of the national selection panel. “The reasonMatthew’s here is because he’s very much in the mix for our one-daythoughts,” Hilditch said. “We’ve got the VB Series coming up, and theWorld Cup. Matthew doesn’t have to prove himself. He’s a great player.”

The reason Australian cricket is so strong is because blokes like me aresitting on the fringe after having played 120 games of one-day cricket, and still looking to play, still looking to train hard and perform everygame

The tremendous tussle for opening slots, he suggested, was in keeping withthe flexibility that has been a hallmark of Australian sides in the recentpast. “We have the ability as a batting line-up to bat players anywhere inthe order,” he said. “Michael [Hussey] is an opener. Ricky [Ponting] canbat anywhere he wants. Marto’s [Damien Martyn] the same. So’s Simmo [Andrew Symonds].”He was also full of praise for his Queensland team-mate, Shane Watson, whoflayed the Indian attack for 79 from just 74 balls when promoted to openyesterday. “Shane’s done some remarkable things with his game in theoff-season,” he said. “He’s more or less transformed the way he stands atthe crease, and I think that’s going to give him a huge advantage. He’sobviously physically exceptional. He should be on Manpower [an Australia male review], not on acricket field,” he laughed. “He’s a great example of a young cricketer whoworks really hard, has discipline, and looks to improve at everyopportunity. I thought he batted beautifully yesterday.”And after Shane Warne’s alleged remarks about John Buchanan caused quite astir in the run-up to the India game, it was fairly evident that the squadhad decided to close ranks on the matter. When asked about his views onthe situation, Hayden was content to say: “I haven’t read the transcripts, and we all know that the English press love to beat a story up. Till I getto the bottom of what the comments were, I don’t think there’s any directproblem between Shane and John.”The Australian team management may have arrived here with the aim oftrying out some new talent, and with one eye on fine-tuning strategiesbefore the Champions Trophy, but for Hayden, the coming week is a hugeone. Fail here, and his one-day career might just be over. But if he canintimidate the bowlers and bludgeon some big runs, the Caribbean dreamwill remain alive.

Ganguly says Chopra will be picked

Aakash Chopra wasn’t around when Sourav Ganguly addressed a press conference on his arrival in Mumbai, but he would have been heartened to hear his captain say that he would be in the squad of 14 chosen for the Australia series. Chopra failed in the first innings of the Irani Trophy against Mumbai, but his decent record in the eight Tests he played last season will see him push Yuvraj Singh for the second opener’s spot.Ganguly wouldn’t let on, however, who was favourite to make the XI. In , he was quoted as saying: “Both will get to play in the four-day practice game.”After building a useful partnership with Virender Sehwag – who seemed to thrive in conjunction with Chopra’s adhesiveness – Chopra was jettisoned for the third and final Test against Pakistan at Rawalpindi in April, with Yuvraj’s century in the previous game having sealed his place. The situation got worse when India came back from the summer hiatus with Ganguly asserting that Yuvraj would be considered for the opening slot against Australia. However, such a scenario is unlikely now given that both Yuvraj and Sehwag have been through the horrors, form-wise, since the new season started.Chopra himself hasn’t had the best of starts to the new campaign. His A team tour was ruined by a shoulder injury, and he played very little part in the team’s successes. As for Ganguly, he was anxious to play down the tag of favourites, after some recent poor displays. “We did well in Australia and Pakistan and so we were dubbed favourites for the Asia Cup but we lost,” he said. “It all depends on how we play against Australia.”

Lancashire and Glamorgan set the pace

Lancashire and Glamorgan maintained their 100 per cent records with straightforward wins over Hampshire and Essex, but Surrey are still waiting for their first win in any competition after going down to Gloucestershire, despite a fighting 73 from Mark Ramprakash. In the second division, Durham completed a good week with a rousing 94-run drubbing of Worcestershire, thanks to hundreds from Marcus North and Paul Collingwood, but Leicestershire surrendered their unbeaten record with defeat by Nottinghamshire. At Edinburgh, a battling 88 from Sridharan Sriram was not enough to spare Scotland from a nine-wicket defeat by Middlesex, who were guided home thanks to an unbeaten 107 from Andrew Strauss.

Crusaders reach target off last ball

Hampshire Hawks failed to record a second win in the ECB National League Division Two losing off the last ball, of their clash with Middlesex Scorpions at The Rose Bowl.Hampshire selected the same eleven that had defeated Sussex the previous day, and chose to bat first. Derek Kenway’s dreadful start to the season continued, this time being bowled first ball, but the innings belonged to Robin Smith. Smith hit a sparkling 92 with 11 fours, he built his innings at the start against some excellent pace bowling from the Crusaders on a helpful pitch. James Hamblin with 33 also contributed and the home side should have been reasonably satisfied with their 45 over total of 198.Wasim Akram’s first five overs read 5-4-3-2 as the visitors were bamboozled with the veteran Pakistan star. A poor start however was saved by opener Paul Weekes who kept just up with the asking rate, aided by Ed Joyce and a quick fire 29 from David Nash. Abdul Rassaq the took three hugh sixes off Shaun Udal’s off-spin to bring them within their task but not before more drama as Wasim Akram and the improving Chris Tremlett each took late wickets and with two runs needed to win off the last ball Ben Hutton slashed the ball over the advancing fielders for the winning runs.Another feature of the Hampshire bowling, and something that needs seriously addressing was the count of 32 extras, Middlesex’s second highest scorer, with a woeful 20 wides.

Fast bowlers set to dominate Galle Test

The first Test of the three match series between Sri Lanka and Indiaat the Galle International Stadium will be played on a pitch conduciveto fast bowling according to ground manager Jayananda Warnaweera.Galle has had a reputation of being a spinner friendly venue in thepast with Sri Lanka tending to bank on their spinners. In fact, thelast Tests played in Galle, against South Africa last year and Englandin February, were dominated by the slower bowlers and both were won bySri Lanka.Sri Lanka though believe that they would be best served by pitcheswith extra pace and bounce against India. After all, MuttiahMuralitharan, the only specialist spinner likely to play, can turn theball on any surface and would also benefit from some extra bounce.Nevertheless, it’s a brave strategy. Sri Lanka came unstuck againstPakistan in Galle last year on a seamer friendly surface when WasimAkram, Waqar Younis and Abdur Razzaq ripped through the batting.Sri Lankan Cricket Board sources have confirmed that the curators ofthe Asgiriya Stadium in Kandy and the Sinhalese Sports Club inColombo, where the second and the third Tests will be played, havealso been asked to prepare pitches with more life than normal. The Sri Lankan selectors have included five fast bowlers in theirsquad and are expected to play three, probably Chaminda Vaas, DilharaFernando and Ruchira Perera. India have four fast bowlers in the squadand are also expected to play three fast bowlers and just onespecialist spinner.Indian captain Sourav Ganguly, speaking after the three-day gameyesterday, claimed to be delighted by the news that the Galle wicketwould be fast bowler friendly."We’ve got some good fast bowlers in Zaheer (Khan) and Srinath. Infact, I was delighted to see Srinath bowling fast in this practicegame after a long time. Then we have Venkatesh Prasad, who is idealfor seaming conditions," said Ganguly.

And now reports suggest that Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs are all in the running.

The Gunners have been the side most strongly linked with the 28-year-old, with the player himself having revealed that talks between his representatives and the London club took place during the last transfer window.

Arsene Wenger is rumoured to be on the lookout for a holding midfielder, which has opened the door for a January raid.

Liverpool are also in the battle, amid talk that Brendan Rodgers is keen to address issues surrounding Steven Gerrard’s future.

The Reds skipper has been criticised for a lack of mobility in his defensive midfield role, leading to talk he may be moved back up the pitch.

With a lack of options to sit in front of the backline, Tiote is seen as a viable target an Anfield.

Manchester United duo extend contracts

Manchester United have confirmed that Paul Scholes and Ben Amos have extended their contracts at Old Trafford.

Veteran midfielder Scholes came out of retirement in January to feature heavily for the Red Devils in the second half of the season, and a new one-year contract was agreed upon last month.

Scholes has put pen-to-paper on the contract after sorting out all formalities, and will look to play a part in United’s efforts to regain their Premier League crown from rivals Manchester City next term.

Amos meanwhile has signed a three-year extension with Sir Alex Ferguson’s men as a reward for impressive showings.

Amos has made seven appearances for the United first-team so far, and has also starred in loan spells at Molde, Peterborough and Oldham.

The youngster will look to provide competition to David De Gea and Anders Lindegaard in the first-team squad next season.

Guardiola claims Fabregas talks

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola has claimed the Catalan club are in negotiations to sign Arsenal captain Cesc Fabregas.Fabregas is a long-time target for Barca and has repeatedly told of his dream to one day return to the club where he began his career.

Barca are back in pre-season training and have yet to make any signings.

While Guardiola admitted that Chile forward Alexis Sanchez is his priority, he also revealed the reigning La Liga and Champions League holders are in talks to sign Fabregas.

“It is scary the amount of games we have to play,” he said at a press conference on Tuesday.

“Last year we were interested in Cesc but Arsenal didn’t place him on the market. This year they have agreed to negotiate and that’s what we’re doing. Market prices are what they are but we have in the end that everything will be sorted out.”

Barcelona announced earlier in the off-season that they would only have around 45 million euros to spend in the current window, but president Sandro Rosell later clarified that the Catalan club could use some of next year’s budget to sign players.

“There is some money in a box (set aside) for this player and we will try until the last day to bring Cesc because he will make our squad better,” Guardiola said.

Fabregas has been encouraged to return to Spain by Barcelona players Xavia and Dani Alves, but Guardiola believes the 24-year-old must be respectful to Arsenal.

“I think Cesc has to do what Arsenal ask him. I wouldn’t like it if a player from this institution stood up and said, ‘I am not going to train anymore because I want to leave’,” he said.

“When he is fit, (Arsene) Wenger will play him. He has spoken to his coach and his club and if he has the possibility to leave, he would like to come to Barca.”

Guardiola also ruled out a summer move for midfielder Thiago Alcantara, even if Fabregas joins the Catalan club.

Some reports had suggested the Spain Under-21 star could be sold but the player signed a new long-term contract in June, raising his release clause from 10 million to 50 millon euros.

“One doesn’t have anything to do with the other,” the Barca coach said when asked about Fabregas and Thiago.

“Thiago has endless personality. He is a very daring boy with a lot of talent, but he has a lot of (first-team) competition.”

“He has a very big future and we will try to give him the minutes (he needs) for his potential to explode. Now he is worth a lot of money.”

A deal where Spurs have nothing to lose and everything to gain?

World football’s most widely known name could be on his way to White Hart Lane, is this the marquee signing Tottenham have been after to show they have the credentials to be right up there at the top? Well no. This is not a signing that is going to revolutionise the team and thrust them well into the title fight or galvanise their efforts in Europe. It would be the temporary arrival, for a couple of months on loan, of a 35 year-old player who has not played at this level for a year and at this pace for even longer, his loan spell at Serie A side Milan last year being in a much slower team and generally slower league.

Tactically I’m not sure how Beckham would fit into the team. At the moment Tottenham are, at least on the flanks, all about pace with two superb counter-attacking goals coming in recent games due to the pace on the wings of Gareth Bale and Aaron Lennon. Pace has never been what Beckham’s game is about and at this late stage in his career his legs would have gone.

Yet I don’t feel like this hinders it being a great opportunity to attain the services of a good, but not great, player who has tremendous European experience along with a great record and knowledge of winning trophies. His experience could prove invaluable to the relatively young Tottenham squad, especially outside of central defence.

Indeed Beckham does offer a completely different option to Lennon on the right flank and a different option could be extremely beneficial if pace isn’t working and pinpoint delivery from the right flank into the box to say the head of Peter Crouch is required. Although I can’t see him coming straight into the team as it is due to the effectiveness of Spurs’ pace, he could greatly benefit the squad as Tottenham enter a busy period of the season if they are to remain involved in all three competitions. But his importance on the pitch cannot be completely overlooked, as at his first stint at Milan he ended up playing a far greater role than anyone expected. Far from being just a squad player there he was instrumental to a side that really turned their season around at that time, domestically at least, if not in Europe.

Added to this it is only a loan deal, and provided Galaxy allow him to actually play matches as there are rumours abound that they’ll only allow him to train with another club, then there really is nothing to lose in signing Beckham. They gain the services of a mature player who would be a fantastic influence to have around the dressing room and would be a very different option to have on the right flank.

Joey Barton handed double charge

QPR midfielder Joey Barton has been handed down a double charge of violent conduct by the FA, after he was sent off against Manchester City on Sunday.

With his side leading 2-1, the temperamental Loftus Road captain was given a straight red card for elbowing Carlos Tevez, before kicking Sergio Aguero and trying to headbutt Vincent Kompany.

Barton will be given an automatic four-match ban for the sending off, but it is likely that this will be extended, possibly up to as many as nine matches.

“The FA has today charged Queens Park Rangers midfielder Joey Barton in relation to two acts of alleged violent conduct during Sunday’s match against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium,” a statement read.

“Following the player’s dismissal in the 54th minute of the fixture, there followed two incidents involving Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany.

“As Barton had already been dismissed, both of these incidents fell outside of the jurisdiction of the referee,” it concluded.

Meanwhile, The Guardian have reported that Barton may well be on his way out of the Loftus Road club, as Mark Hughes has lost patience with the midfielder and will offload him in the summer.
