Liam Manning top contender for QPR

Queens Park Rangers are reportedly set to make an approach for MK Dons manager Liam Manning following the recent departure of Mark Warburton, according to the Evening Standard.

The Lowdown: Warburton leaves QPR

It was confirmed by the club at the end of April that the 59-year-old would be leaving Rangers following the conclusion of the 2021/22 Championship season upon the expiration of his contract at the Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.

Warburton was first appointed as Hoops boss back in 2019 and in that time, went on to take charge of 150 games during his reign in west London.

Now managerless, QPR are on the hunt to find their new man, and following a fresh update, it appears as though they might have discovered their ideal candidate.

The Latest: Hoops approach expected

In a new report published by the Evening Standard, it’s claimed that Rangers are ‘particularly keen’ on MK Dons boss Manning, who has emerged as a ‘strong contender’ for the job.

The source further states that whilst the League One outfit haven’t yet received an official approach from QPR, they are ‘prepared’ for one to arrive in the immediate future.

This follows reports from talkSPORT’s Alex Crook that the ‘brilliant’ Manning is drawing ‘definite interest’.

The Verdict: Manning is impressive

The 36-year-old has enjoyed a hugely successful season with the Dons, having guided them to a third-place finish, but ended up just missing out on promotion having been beaten 2-1 on aggregate by Wycombe Wanderers in the play-off semi-final.

Manning was once hailed as having a “terrific” playing style of football by Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore, and so it’s no surprise to see the young coach attracting interest from QPR.

The Hoops have clearly studied their target’s work and been impressed by what they’ve seen, and if the club are looking to appoint someone with a track record of challenging for promotion at the top end of the table, Manning might just be the man that we’ll be seeing standing in the dugout at the start of next season.

Liverpool: Agent makes Alexander-Arnold claim amid poor form

Football ‘super agent’ Rob Segal has shared an interesting Trent Alexander-Arnold verdict amid his poor run of form for Liverpool so far this season.

The Lowdown: Trent struggling…

The Reds right-back, who burst on to the scene in Liverpool’s two-leg Champions League quarter-final victory against Man City in 2018, has since gone on to have a phenomenal Anfield career overall.

Alexander-Arnold has won a plethora of major honours as a mainstay under Jurgen Klopp, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, League Cup, UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup (Transfermarkt).

However, over this 2022/2023 season so far, the 23-year-old has struggled to cope defensively at times and has attracted criticism from sections of the media – most recently after a lacklustre display in Liverpool’s humbling 4-1 defeat to Napoli in Europe.

The Latest: Agent makes Alexander-Arnold claim…

Speaking to CaughtOffside, super agent Segal has claimed that you can feel the youngster’s ‘arrogance’ on the pitch for Liverpool – made evident by his lack of intensity when tracking back.

He explained:

“Liverpool have major injury problems which haven’t helped and a player like Trent Alexander-Arnold probably needs a prolonged rest.

“However, because of his standing within the club, you can feel his arrogance when he is slowly running back to goal. Alexander-Arnold knows that no matter what he does, right or wrong, he is likely to start week in, week out.

“It is no secret that Alexander-Arnold is a lot better going forward than he is defensively, so his weaknesses need to be covered and unfortunately for Klopp, at the moment, none of his side’s backline are playing particularly well. The timing of their drop-off in form has been really unfortunate.”

The Verdict: Need for a back-up?

It isn’t uncommon for top sides to bring in quality new players to challenge mainstays like Alexander-Arnold and keep them on their toes.

For example, title rivals Man City have a number of options for each position all battling out for regular starting spots.

England international Kalvin Phillips and star man Rodri, for instance, are both currently competing for the single pivot role in front of Pep Guardiola’s back four.

Perhaps some serious competition for the right-back slot could hand Alexander-Arnold some real motivation to improve the defensive aspect of his game and permanently cement a place in Klopp’s starting eleven.

Leeds: Orta dodged a bullet on Kalimuendo

Leeds United were heavily linked with a move for a centre-forward for the vast majority of the summer transfer window, however, aside from the last-minute signing of talented youth prospect Wilfried Gnonto, Victor Orta ultimately failed to add an experienced number nine to Jesse Marsch’s first team squad prior to the market closing on September 1.

And, while missing out on the likes of Charles De Ketelaere to AC Milan and Arnaud Kalimuendo to Stade Rennais will undoubtedly have come as a blow to the Whites’ director of football at the time, considering how Kalimuendo’s campaign in France has panned out thus far, it appears as if the Spaniard dodged something of a bullet on the 20-year-old.

Indeed, it was not difficult to understand why the former Paris Saint-Germain starlet would have been an attacker who piqued Orta’s interest, as, over a two-year loan spell with RC Lens, the France U21 international highly impressed – scoring 21 goals and providing his teammates with six assists over his 65 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 side.

However, after making a €25m (£22m) move west of Paris to Rennes this summer, Kalimuendo initially struggled to find form in his new surroundings, enjoying just 18 touches of the ball, completing a mere 12 passes and failing to take a single shot on his debut in a 1-1 draw with AS Monaco, as well as having just 22 touches, completing 13 passes and taking one shot in a 2-1 win over AC Ajaccio in his second appearance for the club.

Despite his struggle for form, it is undeniable that the £26m-rated forward is still an extremely exciting prospect who will more than likely enjoy a fine career, however, it is the 20-year-old’s current injury status that will more than likely provide Orta with some comfort in missing out on the Frenchman this summer.

Indeed, an early-season muscle tear – sustained following the victory over Ajaccio – has seen the player who Jacek Kulig dubbed “deadly” miss Stade Rennais’ last six fixtures in all competitions, with Bruno Genesio revealing that the attacker will once again be unavailable for the Rouge et Noir’s Europa League meeting with Fenerbahce S.K. on Thursday evening as a result of his setback.

As such, considering the fact that injuries to both Patrick Bamford and Rodrigo had intensified the Whites’ search for a new centre-forward over the closing stages of the summer transfer window, missing out on the signing of Kalimuendo actually appears to have been something of a blessing in disguise for Orta and Leeds – in the short-term, at least.

Spurs: Levy closing in on Vetere

Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on a deal to add Jeff Vetere to Fabio Paratici’s recruitment team in north London.

What’s the latest?

That’s according to a report by Football Insider, who claim that the Italian sporting director has given the green light for Daniel Levy to close a deal with the former Real Madrid scout, who looks set to become the Premier League side’s new U21s head of recruitment.

The report goes on to suggest that Spurs are looking to shake up the structure of their youth department after being criticised for failing to keep hold of some of their most promising emerging talents in recent seasons, as well as seeing a lack of academy prospects make the jump from youth to first-team football.

Levy masterclass

As the report suggests, considering just how poor Tottenham have been in their retention and development of youth talents in recent years, the fact that Levy looks to be addressing this issue with the appointment of Vetere is undoubtedly something of a masterclass by the Spurs chairman.

Indeed, the club’s disappointing record in keeping hold of their most exciting prospects was personified in the 2-0 Champions League defeat at Sporting Lisbon last Tuesday – a game in which former Tottenham academy talent Marcus Edwards stole the show for the Portuguese side.

Over the course of his 89 minutes on the pitch, the £18m-rated forward who left north London on a free transfer back in 2019 was a thorn in Antonio Conte’s side all evening, completing four dribbles, making two key passes, finding his man with one cross and completing 80% of his attempted passes on the night.

The 23-year-old also very nearly scored what would have potentially been one of the best goals the Champions League has ever seen, winding his way through half of the Tottenham team before forcing Hugo Lloris into a smart save. It was a run that the Portuguese press went crazy for, with Record dubbing it “magic,” O Jogo labelling it “artistic” and A Bola claiming it was “transcendent.”

Indeed, this performance led many to question exactly how Spurs had not recognised the incredible amount of potential Edwards undoubtedly possessed before releasing him – something that would explain Levy’s move to appoint Vetere a little over a week after the winger’s display against his former club.

And, should the 56-year-old’s arrival see Tottenham begin to blood significantly more youth prospects in their first team over the coming years, Levy’s appointment of Vetere will certainly be looked back on as something of a masterclass by the chairman.

Norwich missing 5 players for Wolves trip

Wolves host already-relegated Norwich City in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon, with the Canaries set to be without at least five first-team players going into their trip to the Black Country.

What’s the latest?

As per Norfolk Live, Andrew Omobamidele (back), Adam Idah (knee), Ozan Kabak (thigh), Kenny McLean and Josh Sargent (ankle) have all been ruled out for the rest of the seaosn.

However, the East Anglia outfit could also be without Mathias Normann and Christoph Zimmermann, who have both missed recent games, with the former set to receive results from a scan.

“It is as it was for Leicester City on Wednesday,” said Norwich manager Dean Smith ahead of the match, with his side losing 3-0 to Leicester last time out.

Lage and Wolves will be delighted

With just one point from Wolves’ last five matches, Sunday could prove to be Bruno Lage’s side’s best chance of ending their winless run.

The Old Gold have been woeful of late, with Wednesday’s 5-1 thrashing at home to Manchester City, not long after a 3-0 home defeat at the hands of Brighton at the end of April, emphasising how subpar they have been recently.

For a team which prides itself in its defending given how few goals they score, to concede ten goals in their last three matches is extremely worrying for Lage’s side.

However, against a team already relegated from the Premier League and without a handful of key players, Sunday’s match will be a golden opportunity to get back on track ahead of the final day of the season next weekend.

Although highly unlikely, Wolves do still have an outside chance of sneaking into a European position. West Ham in seventh have a five-point advantage over the Old Gold in eighth and would have to lose their remaining two league fixtures, with Wolves winning both of theirs, for Lage’s side to qualify for the Europa Conference League.

Therefore, it is imperative that the Molineux outfit end the season on a high in order to give themselves an outside chance of sneaking into a European place, and that starts with victory over Norwich.

With the Canaries suffering from a number of injuries, Lage will certainly be confident of his team’s chances of getting a first win since early April.

Newcastle preparing Nunez bid

Newcastle United are believed to be readying a bid for Benfica striker Darwin Nunez, according to reports.

What’s the word?

Writing on Twitter, journalist Bruno Andrade revealed that the Magpies are set to make their interest in the Uruguayan more concrete with a bid of €70m (£59m), as manager Eddie Howe looks to bolster his forward ranks ahead of next season.

Amid all the speculation, Andrade said of the player’s situation that: “Newcastle prepares offer of 70 million euros for Darwin Núñez. English club was one of the first to specifically approach Benfica, still in December, when Rui Costa received Steve Nickson, responsible for the Magpies scout. There are others interested in the Uruguayan in Europe.”

This follows recent reports that the St James’ Park outfit are eyeing a deal for the 22-year-old, while transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has revealed that the forward is due to leave the Portuguese side this summer, with a fee of €80m (£67m) likely to be required.

The next Shearer?

The northeast side are currently crying out for a new centre-forward addition, with the club having failed to recruit a reliable, top quality goalscorer in recent times, having seen many high profile names come and go since the departure of the great, Alan Shearer back in the mid-noughties.

Although no one will likely ever replace the Premier League’s leading goalscorer from his lofty perch in Newcastle folklore, few have even come close to replicating his success, with acquiring a top-class number nine having proven a real source of difficulty over the last decade or so.

There had been hopes that Callum Wilson could finally emerge as a mainstay in attack, although the former Bournemouth man has again struggled for fitness this term, while £25m January arrival Chris Wood appears nothing more than a stop-gap.

In Nunez, however, PIF could not only have found their first major marquee signing but also the heir to Shearer’s throne, with the £36m-rated gem having proven himself a real prolific marksman in recent seasons.

Despite his relative youth, the 6 foot 2 ace – who has eight caps at senior international level – has already netted 68 career club goals, 48 of which have come since his move to Portugal in 2020, with that form also reportedly alerting the attention of the likes of Manchester United.

This season has been particularly fruitful for the starlet, whose been dubbed a “rough diamond” by pundit Steve McManaman, as he has bagged 34 goals in all competitions, including six goals in just ten games in the club’s run to the Champions League quarter-finals.

Not simply an out-and-out goalscorer, Nunez also averages 1.1 key passes per game and has created ten big chances in the league this season, with Howe’s side set to attain a real package should they be successful in their bid.

The club need a new centre-forward star of Shearer’s ilk – the former Almeria man could well prove to be that figure.

Crystal Palace eye move for Ismaila Sarr

Crystal Palace has shown interest in signing Watford’s Senegalese winger, Ismaila Sarr.

What’s the word?

That is according to a report from JeunesFooteux who claim that Watford’s relegation to the Championship suggests there is a “good chance” of the 24-year-old leaving.

The French outlet suggest that Sarr “will not be retained by his club in the event of an interesting offer.”

Several Premier League teams are said to be interested in securing the services of the Watford star, with the likes of Newcastle, Everton and “especially Crystal Palace” mentioned – with Vieira said to “greatly appreciate” Sarr’s profile as a player.

Vieira’s admiration

With Vieira’s admiration for Sarr stated in the report, amidst Watford’s relegation to the second tier of English football, a move for the Senegalese forward makes complete sense from a Steve Parish and a Crystal Palace perspective.

Though, the potential £30m signing would represent what is, on the face of it, a project for Vieira and at a fee that would fall just short of the £32.5m deal that saw Christian Benteke make the switch from Liverpool to make him the record arrival at Selhurst Park, it could be a risky move.

This season, the 24-year-old, who has been dubbed a “champion” by previous manager Claudio Ranieri, has been a bit of an enigma. His five goals and two assists are a solid return for a player who has operated in a shaken up Watford side and had his fair share of injury woes but it has added to his career total nicely, which now stands at 47 goals.

The aforementioned factors form the collective reason as to why he has made just 22 Premier League appearances this season. Sarr’s returns could not have been predicted by his numbers over the last year. It’s a valid case for the “eye test” endorsers who rubbish statistical analysis, with the Senegalese’s average of 0.73 shots on target, 15.96 passes completed and 2.13 shot-creating actions demonstrating what would appear to be a lack of involvement in the game.

Yet despite this he has drummed up an xG total of 5.6 in the league this season, with stat advocates like me left with egg on my face in this particular case.

Celtic: Hoops ‘keeping tabs’ on Sorinola

Celtic have been named among the clubs interested in Union SG full-back Matthew Sorinola, according to a report from Wales Online.

The lowdown: Career so far

A product of the youth system at MK Dons, London-born Sorinola made 46 senior appearances for the League One club, scoring twice and providing six assists.

In 2021, the 21-year-old left-back was snapped up by Belgian Jupiler Pro League side Union SG on a free transfer, where he is under contract until 2024 (Transfermarkt).

But, despite the lengthy time remaining on the deal, a host of clubs are paying close attention to the Englishman’s situation…

The latest: Hoops named

As per Wales Online, Celtic are ‘keeping tabs’ on the talented youngster, who was singled out for an ‘outstanding’ performance against Wigan by now Swansea City boss Russell Martin.

The report claims that Norwich City and Swansea are both in the ‘race’ to sign Sorinola and the former recently lodged an enquiry regarding his availability.

It’s also stated that ‘sources’ have suggested former Anderlecht boss Vincent Kompany could look to take the starlet to Burnley should the appointment be made official.

The verdict: Smart move

Hoops’ manager Ange Postecoglou appears determined to add an adequate left-back cover to the squad this summer having already been heavily linked with a move for Mohanad Jeahze.

That’s despite current incumbent Greg Taylor performing admirably during a successful 2021/22 campaign at Celtic Park. The 24-year-old earned an impressive 6.94 average Sofascore rating from 24 Scottish Premiership outings, winning 4.5 duels per game in the process.

Meanwhile, Sorinola rated just 6.65 in Belgium whilst making 14 fleeting substitute appearances in the arguably inferior league.

Despite that lack of regular action, the £315,000 valued ace’s form in England suggests he would provide a worthwhile addition to the Lennoxtown ranks, albeit perhaps as an understudy to Taylor from the outset.

Liverpool given boost in Nunez update

Liverpool have been heavily linked with Darwin Nunez ahead of the summer transfer window, and now a new transfer update has emerged that gives the club a major boost in completing the signing.

What’s the latest?

According to The Independent, the Benfica star favours a move to Liverpool over Manchester United this summer.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-liverpool-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-salah-gnabry-isak-romano” title= “Read the latest Liverpool news!”]

As per the report, the new Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has made the signing of Nunez the top priority at Old Trafford during the transfer window, however, it is believed that he would prefer a move to Anfield instead.

Klopp will be thrilled

With the reports that Sadio Mane could be leaving Liverpool this summer, there is no doubt that Klopp will be thrilled with the news that Nunez would favour joining the side to replace the Senegalese winger’s outstanding goal contributions next season.

Whoever replaces Mane will have big boots to fill with the forward scoring 23 goals and assisting five times in 51 appearances this season alone, but when you consider the Benfica striker’s attacking output for the Portuguese side, if he could emulate that at Anfield, FSG could be onto a winner.

The £63m gem who was hailed “tenacious” and a “monster” by football reporter James Dodd, has scored 34 goals and contributed four assists in 41 appearances in all competitions, and impressively made a goal contribution every 74 minutes this season, proving that he has the ability to be a solid attacking threat for Liverpool.

The Reds manager is also a huge admirer of the Uruguayan player, and sang his praises in an interview ahead of his team’s Champions League second leg tie against Benfica earlier this season.

Klopp said (via The Mirror);

“Extremely good-looking boy and a decent player as well,”

“Physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish when he finished the goal off. Good, really good.”

With that being said, Nunez would clearly be welcome at Anfield and if he can continue with his goal-scoring form in the Premier League next season could become a real asset to the Merseyside giants if they were to lose Mane during the transfer window.
