Balbirnie shows glimpse of Ireland future

The two oldest men in the Ireland squad delivered when it mattered. The victory over Zimbabwe would not have happened without them. But the most encouraging thing was the maturity shown by one of their youngest men.

A hundred for Ed Joyce, four wickets for Alex Cusack. The two oldest men in this Ireland squad delivered when it mattered. The victory over Zimbabwe would not have happened without them. But the most encouraging thing to come out of this win for Ireland was not the form of their old-timers, but the maturity shown by one of their youngest men.In both Auckland and Hobart on Saturday, ABs entertained the crowd with their clean hitting. Unlike Abraham Benjamin at Eden Park, Andy Balbirnie at Bellerive Oval ended up on the winning side. Balbirnie’s only failure was in trying to make his ground in the 50th over of Ireland’s innings; a maiden ODI century was missed, but Balbirnie’s 97 was a thing of great beauty for Ireland. Not surprisingly, Joyce was Man of the Match for his 112, an innings of significance for Ireland’s World Cup campaign. But Joyce is 36 and a veteran of two countries, a man who has been there, done that. You expect him to stand up. Balbirnie is 24, and the second-least experienced player in this XI. “You’d think he was one of the senior players,” Ireland’s captain, William Porterfield, said after play.Joyce and Balbirnie came together with Ireland having started steadily, but no more. The score was 79 for 2 in the 21st over. Their 138-run partnership came off 112 balls and they kept Ireland’s World Cup dream firmly alive.Their win, and South Africa’s loss, means that Ireland need one point from their last two games against India and Pakistan to make the quarter-finals – assuming West Indies do not slip up against UAE. If Ireland remain on six points, circumstances dictate that they cannot qualify on net run rate.”Andy took the pressure off me today,” Joyce said after the match. “He hit his first ball for four and just rotated the strike really well. That gave me the ability to do the same thing. I was very lucky getting to 30 or 40 but after that it felt pretty good.”Balbirnie and Paul Stirling represent the younger generation of Ireland batsmen, the players to whom the side will look in the coming decade as Joyce winds down and as the O’Briens and Porterfield move into their mid-30s. Stirling failed here, but his credentials are well established. Balbirnie has established his in this World Cup.His 58 against South Africa came in a losing cause, but was enough to give Porterfield confidence to bump Balbirnie up to No. 4 against Zimbabwe. The faith was repaid. Porterfield himself had struggled to rotate the strike early in the innings; Balbirnie did so with ease, and then stepped on in later in the innings, notably crunching 20 runs off a Tinashe Panyangara over to help Ireland to their highest ever ODI total.Balbirnie has been around for a while. He captained Ireland at the Under-19 World Cup in 2008 and his ODI debut came against Scotland in 2010. But it was not until last year that he really started to emerge from the fringes. There was an 86 against the ACT in Canberra in October, and his maiden century for Ireland, 129 against New Zealand A in Dubai in November. That innings was against a high-quality attack that boasted Adam Milne, Kyle Mills, Doug Bracewell, Matt Henry and Nathan McCullum, and if there was any doubt about Balbirnie’s World Cup credentials, they were quelled. Even before that, Balbirnie had shown enough to encourage Middlesex to sign him, and he debuted for the county in T20s in 2014.It is a familiar route, the same one taken by Joyce, who played for Middlesex and ultimately for England, and Eoin Morgan, now England’s ODI captain.Stirling and Balbirnie played together for Middlesex last year; Ireland must hope they do not follow the Joyce/Morgan lead and end up playing for England. They are far too valuable to their home nation.”Andy has been brilliant in the last six months he’s come into the team,” Joyce said. “I hadn’t seen him really bat before this tournament. He got a brilliant hundred against New Zealand A in Dubai against nearly a full-strength New Zealand attack, and he was great today. He played brilliantly against South Africa.”As Balbirnie moved through the 80s and 90s, a conga of Ireland fans danced on the grass bank at Bellerive Oval, celebrating what they hoped would be their country’s third win of the tournament. It was, though, closer than they would have liked. Now they find themselves in a strong position, although needing to beat a third Full Member (or share points) to progress.”It’s very hard to say when you come in at the start of a long tournament, what you will need or won’t need,” Porterfield said. “We’ve just try to break it down and take it each game as it comes. Whatever we need when it comes down to the last game, we need.”But we’re just taking this India game now and that’s all we can look forward to. We’ve managed to deal with the West Indies game and the UAE game and not look past them. We’ve got to freshen up when we arrive in Hamilton and be ready to go there.”It will be a huge challenge, their bowling depth especially having been exposed through the middle overs against Zimbabwe. But at least their fate in this World Cup remains in their own hands. And not just old hands.

Kane Richardson withdraws from IPL

Kane Richardson has opted out of the eighth season of the IPL•BCCI

Australia seamer Kane Richardson, who was retained by Rajasthan Royals, ahead of the 2015 season, has opted out of the IPL citing personal reasons. The franchise is yet to name a replacement, although they were well stocked in pace-bowling options with the likes of captain Shane Watson, Tim Southee, James Faulkner, Dhawal Kulkarni, Rusty Theron, Chris Morris, Ben Cutting and Stuart Binny.Richardson has played 10 matches in IPL, including seven of the Royals’ 14 last season, for 11 wickets at an economy of 7.9. More recently, he took 10 wickets from nine matches for Adelaide Strikers in BBL. No Sri Lankan players in IPL matches in Chennai Following the precedent set in 2013, Sri Lankan players will not feature in any of the matches played in Chennai during this season’s IPL. According to a BCCI insider, the measure is only a “precautionary” move, keeping in mind the security of Sri Lankan players and match officials. The players and teams that will be affected by this diktat are Delhi Daredevils’ Angelo Mathews, Kings XI Punjab’s Thisara Perera, and Mumbai Indians’ Lasith Malinga. In 2013, the state government of Tamil Nadu had written to the Indian Prime Minister asking for a ban on Sri Lankan players’ involvement in the Chennai leg of the IPL. It was reacting to the growing political tensions, stemming from the treatment of ethnic Tamils in Sri Lanka.

Royals player reports offer of fixing for money

Three days into the eighth season of the IPL it has emerged that a Rajasthan Royals player was approached with an offer of money for fixing, and he informed the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption & Security Unit about it last month

Bal: Leak is troublesome

Three days into the eighth season of the IPL it has emerged that a Rajasthan Royals player was approached with an offer of money for fixing, and he informed the BCCI’s Anti-Corruption & Security Unit (ACSU) about it last month. The reported that the player was approached well before the IPL by one of his Ranji Trophy team-mates, who is not part of the ongoing T20 tournament.BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur confirmed that the Mumbai-based player had informed the ACSU about the incident. “A player was approached and he immediately intimated BCCI anti-corruption unit. Glad that BCCI education policy [is] showing positive results,” Thakur tweeted. “Players are alert and they know what is to be done due to our regular education efforts.””It was an exploratory kind of approach, but he was shut up immediately [by the Mumbai player],” a BCCI official said. According to the official it is nothing new considering players have now become more vigilant in the aftermath of the 2013 corruption scandal. He also said the education and awareness measures put in place by BCCI’s anti-corruption unit had helped the players understand the modus operandi used by fixers.”Rajasthan Royals commends the player for having reported this incident immediately and for his honesty and uprightness,” Royals CEO Raghu Iyer said in a statement. “His dedication to maintain the highest standards of integrity needs to be lauded.”Rajasthan Royals in keeping with its zero tolerance approach immediately reported the incident further to the ACSU/BCCI for further process. Rajasthan Royals will continue to provide full support and assistance to the BCCI to ensure that the game of cricket is played in the right spirit. This incident does highlight that if players and other officials cooperate and disclose information or approaches immediately, the game can be kept clean and free from undesirable elements and activities.”Incidentally, Royals mentor Rahul Dravid had spoken days before this year’s tournament started about the fight against corruption and had asked for anti-corruption measures to be adopted at all international and domestic tournaments, including the IPL, to keep cricket corruption-free.”We have to remember that the IPL is a two-month tournament. Nine-ten months of the year, people are not with the franchises. Sometimes they are with their state teams or international teams and that is a long time of the year,” Dravid had said. “Things like education and vigilance need to be followed not only by the IPL but by everyone else.”The IPL is a high-profile tournament. It does attract a lot of attention, hype and media, because of that it does attract at times a lot of wrong elements as well. Vigilance is one thing that at all times we need to be vigilant about. Everyone is trying their best. They have the educational programmes, they have the ACSU. I know Rajasthan Royals, we go out of the way to make an effort, try and educate the players.”It’s not the first time a fixing-related issue has come out of the Royals camp. Sreesanth, Ajit Chandila and Ankeet Chavan were arrested in the middle of the 2013 IPL season on allegations of spot-fixing. The trio was suspended by the BCCI and Royals within a few days, and Sreesanth and Chavan were later banned for life by the BCCI.Royals play their first match of the season on Friday against Kings XI Punjab in Pune.

Have come back a better player – Pujara

India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara believes he has come back a “better player” after his stint in English county cricket with Yorkshire

Gaurav Kalra19-May-20158:30

‘Achieved what I set out to do’ – Pujara

India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara believes he has come back a “better player” after his stint in English county cricket with Yorkshire. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo after returning from England, Pujara said he “achieved the targets” he had set out for.”I could have achieved more though as I had a few 30s where I was well set and I had the chance to get a big one,” Pujara said. “A couple of decisions didn’t go my way which is a part of the game. Overall, I achieved my targets. The experience of playing in those conditions helped me learn a lot. The dressing room atmosphere was fantastic and I enjoyed playing for them.”Pujara signed up for a short-term contract with Yorkshire after being ignored at the IPL auction in February. He played four matches for the defending county champions, scoring 264 runs in six innings at an average of 52.80 with one century and a fifty. Pujara said these performances have “boosted his confidence” given the tricky early season conditions he had to encounter.”At the beginning of the season, the wickets are always difficult to bat on in the UK,” he said. “I thought getting a hundred and a fifty in those conditions was really important. I was getting starts so I was not nervous and I didn’t have issues facing seam bowling. There were a couple of really challenging wickets where batting was really difficult. I survived those conditions and it boosted my confidence.”Pujara lost his place in the playing XI for India’s last Test on the tour of Australia, in Sydney, after a string of below-par performances. Over eight Test matches in England and Australia, he scored 423 runs at an average of 26.43, going past the half-century mark just twice. He believes the stint with Yorkshire will help him get back to run-scoring ways.”When you play in challenging conditions, you learn about your technique and how to score runs in difficult situations,” he said. “So, the pressure makes you matured. Once you score runs in those conditions, you believe in yourself and you can do it any conditions. When you play Test cricket, the wickets are generally good to bat but in county cricket you get result-oriented wickets. So you bat in challenging conditions and having done that, I’m definitely a better player.”Pujara is expected to be named in the Indian Test squad for the one-off Test against Bangladesh next month. He believes there is enough time to adjust to the change in conditions he is likely to encounter from England to Bangladesh. Pujara is also keen to resume batting at the No. 3 position, where he has had most of his success at Test level.”Since I’ve been batting at No. 3, I’m comfortable there but it also depends on the team’s requirement,” he said. “If there is a need to change my batting position, I’ll bat at that position but I think the team wants me to bat at No. 3 and that is where I have performed well in the past. I think No. 3 suits me as well as the team.”The series in Bangladesh will also mark the formal start of a new era for India in Test cricket with MS Dhoni having announced his retirement from the format. Pujara believes Dhoni deserves credit for “building this team,” having identified the potential of the individuals under his wing. Pujara is confident this group can give India success in the years ahead.”Most of us have played a decent amount of cricket together,” he said. “We know each other as we have been a part of the India A teams together. This bunch knows each other well as we have played a lot of cricket together. I have no doubt that we should be able to perform well wherever we go whether – in India or abroad. MS Dhoni was trying to build this team and he knew the potential of this team. Credit has to go to him for building this team.”
