Sri Lanka hit back after Elgar century

At 195 for 1, South Africa had made a near-perfect start to the Tests after the victorious ODI series, but Sri Lanka hit back with four wickets after tea to edge the day on a flat, dry pitch

The Report by Abhishek Purohit16-Jul-2014
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAt 195 for 1, South Africa had made a near-perfect start to the Tests after the victorious ODI series, but Sri Lanka hit back with four wickets after tea to edge the day on a flat, dry pitch. Dean Elgar became the first South Africa opener to make a Test hundred in Sri Lanka but his dismissal in the final session kickstarted the hosts’ fightback. It had been all South Africa till then. In his first Test as captain, Hashim Amla had won the toss on a pitch expected to turn later. Elgar, in only his third Test innings as opener, and his first outside South Africa, had responded with an innings full of positivity and equally high on concentration. Faf du Plessis, batting at No. 3 for the first time in Tests, had battled his way through scoreless periods with aggressive footwork against spin. By tea, the second-wicket partnership had grown to 124. Alviro Petersen’s fall against the run of play for 34 in the morning had been the only blip for the visitors. To add to Sri Lanka’s worries, Shaminda Eranga had been restricted to nine overs after splitting the webbing of his right hand while fielding. But Sri Lanka had found some promising reverse swing after lunch, and they did so again after tea. The first examination yielded no results but during the second Elgar went after a Suranga Lakmal delivery that held its line and edged it behind. A small, but significant opening had been made.Amla was intent on driving at anything pitched up, but the timing just wasn’t there. He tried to loft the tireless Rangana Herath over the off side, but only spooned a catch to wide mid-off for 11.Dean Elgar became the first South Africa opener to make a Test hundred in Sri Lanka•AFP

Du Plessis, who was eager to combat spin by advancing down the pitch, finally failed to reach the pitch of an offbreak from Dilruwan Perera and forward short leg was in business.AB de Villiers seemed to be taking South Africa to stumps safely, despite Sri Lanka taking the second new ball, when he tried a weak, loose drive to Lakmal and found his stumps disturbed in the penultimate over. The final session had cost South Africa four wickets for 74 runs in 31 overs. The first one had read 111 for 1 in 29 overs. Both captains were eager to bat and it soon became apparent why. There was no seam movement, barely any swing and the bounce was largely predictable as well as harmless. Elgar and Petersen did what they were required to do: they left well, defended strongly off either foot and having seen there was nothing alarming in the pitch, soon started putting the bad deliveries away. The duo put on 70 at more than four an over.Herath came on as early as the seventh over, and finished with 37 for the day. The pitch wasn’t conducing for him so early in the match. Elgar was even able to go back and late-cut him against the turn to the third-man boundary. The runs were flowing now for South Africa. By the tenth over, Angelo Mathews had brought himself on as the fourth bowler.South Africa have had three century opening partnerships in Tests in Sri Lanka and this looked set to be the fourth one but in Perera’s second over, Petersen went back to a flighted delivery and was caught in front as it came on without much turn.Du Plessis walked in and worked himself to a steady start with a series of paddle-sweeps. He was smothered after lunch though, but finally broke free from a period where he made 6 off 45 by skipping out to loft Perera over mid-off and mid-on for consecutive fours.Elgar was much more comfortable in the crease, playing late, allowing the ball to come on, and then committing himself with conviction. He was watching the ball so hard that even when Perera seemed to have beaten him with flight and drift, he was able to adjust and place the ball past mid-off for four. That took him to 90, and a straight six, when on 96, off the same bowler brought a long-drawn scream of a celebration.South Africa took tea at 194 for 1, but despite being a bowler short, Sri Lanka weren’t prepared to hand them a third session on the trot.

Cook 'just gets steelier' – Moores

Peter Moores, the England coach, has praised the resilience and determination of Alastair Cook following England’s three-day victory over India in the fourth Investec Test at Old Trafford.

Peter Moores, the England coach, has praised the resilience and determination of Alastair Cook following England’s three-day victory over India in the fourth Investec Test at Old Trafford. When England lost the Lord’s Test, little more than a couple of weeks ago, it meant they had lost seven Tests in nine and were without victory in almost a year. Cook admitted his position as England captain was under pressure unless he could turn around his own form and the results of the team before the end of the series. Now, successive victories later, that pressure has eased. While some concerns over Cook’s batting form linger, the improved performances from the rest of the team have revived hopes that England’s new era is heading in the right direction. But, even during those challenging days after Lord’s, Cook never lost his appetite for the job. Indeed, according to Moores, the experience brought the best out of him.”He’s one of those characters who, the more criticism he gets, the more determined he becomes,” Moores said. “He just gets steelier. He would openly admit that he’s had a really tough ride. But that often can forge somebody into something special.”The significant point came when he made it clear he was in it for the long haul. He made it clear he wanted to do the job. If other people didn’t want him, then fine, he’d move on, but he made public his desire to captain England. He just said that he was going to give it everything he’s got and he still has the same approach now.Moores delighted with England newcomers

Peter Moores hailed the performances of Moeen Ali and Jos Buttler after England’s innings-and-54-run victory over India at Old Trafford.
Moeen again played a key role with the ball in the second innings, taking 4 for 39 as India were skittled for the second time in the match. Moeen is now the second highest wicket-taker in the series with 19 victims.
“He’s backed up the performance in Southampton,” Moores said. “He’s getting better, that’s the main thing. He’ll have his challenges. He’s not the sort of bloke to get carried away and he’s shown in international cricket there is a chance to develop really fast because you are amongst good players.
“He’s bowling against top flight batters and he’s adjusted. His pace has increased and he’s bowling tighter. The fact that he is getting out top players of spin will bring him a lot of confidence.”
Moores was also pleased with wicketkeeper Jos Buttler who made an important 70 with the bat and recovered from a shaky first-innings to keep soundly in the second.
“He’s played two very different innings. He’s not just a biff-bang player. He’s calm at the crease, he looks in control.
“That partnership with Root was really good because they got through a difficult period. But he also took his opportunities to score so he was happy to sweep or lap the spinner or take on the seamer.”

“Everybody knows it is a very pressurised job. You’re dictated by results. But you need to know that somebody is up for the challenge. You’ve got to have a belief in them as a person that, as captain, they can take people forward. Leadership is about getting people to follow you and creating opportunities for them. Cooky is very much into that. Deep down, he is a real carer as a bloke.”Moores also praised elements of Cook’s captaincy that might not be seen by the media or spectators. Insisting that the creation of a positive dressing room environment was at least as important as on-field tactics, Moores reiterated his commitment to Cook as captain and suggested he was improving in all facets of leadership.”If you have players who are confident to play, it is probably more important than whether you have three slips or four,” Moores said. “If you have a guy running in hard for you in his third spell and he’s tired and he’s working for you and for the team, that is more important than a field position being five yards out. There will always be in cricket three decisions you can make at one time, but what you want is a team out there playing hard.”Alastair is developing quickly as captain. He has great values to lead with, so that’s always a great start. It is difficult to ask somebody else to do something you wouldn’t do yourself and there is nothing Alastair wouldn’t do, for England or for the team. So that’s a good place to start. But tactically he is also developing quickly.”He is in a great position because he is relatively young to have played so many Test matches and to have such a great record. He has a desire to lead. It doesn’t mean you would question yourself – everyone questions themselves all the time, humility is the sign of a good leader – but for me you’re trying to build relationships and keep everyone in the group settled. There will be some changes but hopefully the leader is one you don’t want to change too often.”

Hales in, Bopara out of ODI squad

England have included Alex Hales in their ODI squad for the forthcoming series against India, with Ravi Bopara dropped as England focus their minds on preparing for the World Cup

Alan Gardner18-Aug-2014England have included Alex Hales in their ODI squad for the forthcoming series against India, with Ravi Bopara dropped as the management focus their minds on preparing for the 2015 World Cup. Michael Carberry and Tim Bresnan were also left out, while Steven Finn has won a recall but there was otherwise no radical shake-up six months out from the tournament.A call-up for Hales, a regular in the T20 side, had been expected and he is likely to open alongside the captain, Alastair Cook, and provide greater boundary-hitting proficiency during the Powerplay overs. Ian Bell, Cook’s opening partner for the last two years, could drop down to No. 3, where Gary Ballance and Joe Root are also options.Hales has made an irresistible case for promotion to the 50-over side, scoring three List A hundreds in the last three weeks, the most recent a domineering 141 off 96 balls for Nottinghamshire against Middlesex. He was part of England’s ODI squad in the Caribbean earlier this year, ahead of the World T20, but missed out on a debut due to a thigh injury.Alex Hales has scored heavily in recent weeks to make his case for promotion to the one-day side•Getty Images

His form has extended to four-day cricket, after a difficult 2013, and on Monday he scored an unbeaten century to lead his side to victory against Northamptonshire. “Following the tons for the Lions last week, at Lord’s on Thursday and now today, I feel I’m in the best form of my career – and I hope it continues,” Hales said afterwards. It is for his power in the shorter formats that Hales has won a place in England’s World Cup planning – Eoin Morgan described him as being “like nobody else we have” – seemingly at the expense of Bopara. Both scored centuries for the Lions in the recent triangular series, although Bopara has filled a very different brief for England’s ODI side, in which he has been a regular since the 2011 World Cup, generally batting at No. 6 or No. 7 and providing a useful option with the ball. This year, however, he has averaged 23.70 from 13 innings, to go with seven wickets at 41.57.England lost the ODI series against Sri Lanka 3-2 earlier in the summer but have resisted making dramatic changes to their template. Cook, having recanted on his suggestion that he could give up the one-day captaincy during England’s miserable tour of Australia, will continue to provide a solid base at the top of the order and the importance of his role was reiterated by the coach, Peter Moores.”Alastair’s record probably stands up with a lot of openers,” Moores said. “With the way one-day cricket is going, there is a huge emphasis on the top of the order … With two new balls, you’ve got to get through, but you’ve got to score at the right rate. So you’ve got to get a balance of people at the top end, the first half of the game, who score at the right rate.”Moeen Ali, who was left out of the Sri Lanka series to work on his red-ball bowling, returns alongside Ben Stokes and it is perhaps those all-round options which have persuaded England to dispense with Bopara, whose wicket-to-wicket seam-up bowling may have been more vulnerable in Australia and New Zealand, where the World Cup will be held. Stokes has not been involved with the limited-overs squads since breaking a bone in his wrist punching a locker in the West Indies and was dropped from the Test side during the India series after extending his run of scores for England to 0, 5, 5, 4, 0, 4, 0, 0, 0, 0 in all formats.Stuart Broad has been omitted to allow him to undergo knee surgery, with Finn included alongside Stokes, Chris Jordan, Harry Gurney and Chris Woakes as fast-bowling support for James Anderson.”With the World Cup now less than six months away our focus over the coming months switches to identifying our strongest possible squad for that competition,” James Whitaker, the national selector, said. “However this is an important series in its own right and we have selected 15 players who we believe will perform well against an Indian side with a strong one day record.”This series presents an opportunity for players to build on their international and domestic form and demonstrate that they have the ability to win games of cricket for England. With plenty of domestic limited overs cricket still to be played this season and a series against Sri Lanka in November before finalising our World Cup squad there are still opportunities for us to consider a number of players who have missed out on selection.”England squad: Alastair Cook (capt), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Gary Ballance, Ian Bell, Jos Buttler, Steven Finn, Harry Gurney, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Eoin Morgan, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Tredwell, Chris Woakes

Cooke's maiden ton revives Glamorgan

Chris Cooke scored a superb maiden first-class century to keep Kent’s attack at bay and guide Glamorgan to 329 all out on the opening day of the Division Two match at Canterbury.

Chris Cooke scored a superb maiden first-class century to keep Kent’s attack at bay and guide Glamorgan to 329 all out on the opening day of the Division Two match at Canterbury.Cooke, the 28-year-old South African-born batsman, was last out for 171 after holding Glamorgan’s first innings together against a Kent team still with an outside chance of promotion and aiming to win three of their last four Championship games. It always looked like being Cooke’s day after he was dropped on 2 by Adam Riley at second slip, off Darren Stevens, and overall he batted for 214 balls and struck 18 fours and a six.Riley’s miss was hugely costly for Kent, who would have had their opponents 15 for 4 had Cooke been dismissed. As it was, Cooke and Jim Allenby put on 62 for the fourth wicket to begin Glamorgan’s recovery from 7 for 3.Allenby made 44 from 44 balls, leading a counter-attack with eight fours, but it was not until Dean Cosker joined Cooke in an eighth-wicket partnership of 118 in 32 overs that Glamorgan moved into a position of comfort following their decision to bat first on a good pitch and in warm, sunny conditions. The 36-year-old Cosker’s two-hour 45 from 104 balls was only seven runs short of his career-best, and his determined resistance gave Cooke the opportunity to go past his previous first-class best – 96, also against Kent, in June – as well as hauling Glamorgan up from a distinctly under-par 183 for 7.Mitch Claydon led Kent’s bowling effort with 4 for 47 and it was he who ended Cosker’s resistance in his second over with the second new ball.Claydon also added the tail-end wicket of Michael Hogan, bowled swishing, to those earlier of Jacques Rudolph, caught at first slip for nought during an opening spell of 5-4-1-1, and Allenby, who was caught behind thin-edging an attempted pull.Stevens supported Claydon well, starting with a new ball spell of 10-4-15-1 and having Gareth Rees caught at the wicket for 3 as he tried to force away square on the offside. Later, in the second over after lunch, Stevens saw David Lloyd, on 7, drive him straight to mid-off.It was only right at the end of Glamorgan’s innings, when Stevens was hit for 16 runs in an over by Cooke, that he was collared.Robbie Joseph – making his first Championship appearance since the end of June – removed Will Bragg leg-before after the batsman had struggled through 41 balls, and Matt Hunn won an lbw appeal to send back Graham Wagg for 18 after he had driven offspinner Riley for six and four in the space of three balls.Riley did have the consolation of taking Cooke’s wicket, when he drove high to Hunn at long-off, but only after he had batted for five hours and displayed a range of strokeplay unmatched by any other batsman. Before that, indeed, Riley’s only success on a chastening day for the highly-rated 22-year-old, was when Mark Wallace – having contributed 24 to a sixth-wicket stand of 58 with Cooke – lifted a drive to short extra cover.
