Liverpool have been so vulnerable this season, with Arne Slot having struggled to come up with solutions to opposition set-ups and his own squad’s staggering capitulation, having dominated and cantered toward the Premier League title last season.

To say Virgil van Dijk’s backline has been leaky would be an understatement, and that is the crux of the Reds’ troubles, their form the stuff of relegation, two wins from ten in the top flight.

However, the defenders aren’t solely to blame, with Liverpool lacking creativity and sparkle in the final third.

The form of Alexander Isak has been a particular concern, with the Sweden international having endured a slow and stodgy start to the season, months into a British-record £125m transfer that secured for the club “the best striker in the centre-forward” in England last season “by a country mile”, as had been said by pundit Ally McCoist.

It’s not been plain sailing for Isak since forcing a record-breaking move to Merseyside on transfer deadline day. In fact, the 26-year-old has only scored twice across all competitions, and once in the Premier League.

Injuries and missing out on pre-season have stunted his seasonal development, and Slot issued an unwelcome update on Friday morning: Isak picked up a knock at the San Siro, and he may be sidelined for the Anfield clash against Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon.

This is just the latest in a growing line of setbacks. Liverpool signed Isak for six years, but the fact remains that more would have been expected from such a world-class talent at this stage.

Indeed, few would have expected Isak to have flattered to deceive as he has so far this season. Regardless of Liverpool’s crisis, this is a proven and world-class striker; he tore defences apart last season, including Liverpool’s, and on multiple occasions at that.

Isak only had four goals for Newcastle at this stage last season. Food for thought. And he’s not the only one who’s struggled since making his summer move to Merseyside, with a fellow recruit having left everything to be desired so far.

Liverpool signed a bigger problem than Isak

Like Isak, Jeremie Frimpong has been plagued by injury problems since joining Liverpool this summer, but unlike Isak, he has been sidelined for a longer spell, and there is less optimism that he will pick himself up and become a major player for the Anfield side.

Sporting director Richard Hughes activated Frimpong’s £29.5m release clause at Bayer Leverkusen at the start of the summer, bringing to Merseyside one of the fastest right-siders in the game, hailed as “a monster” in the attacking third by The United Stand’s Beth Tucker.

However, the Netherlands man, 25, has only started once in the Premier League this season due to injury, and this is a concern given he had navigated through his years in Germany without any detrimental fitness setbacks.

Isak has been a worry for Slot’s side, but he has also proven himself in the harsh English climate, one of the best in the world. Frimpong, however, is more of an unknown, and the £100k-per-week star’s first few months at Liverpool have hardly been propitious.

Moreover, Frimpong’s preference to play in a wing-back role could see him struggle to find his feet in his best position.

The issue: Liverpool do not use a system which employs wing-backs, and Frimpong perhaps lacks the economy of strength and the awareness to nail down a starting berth as Liverpool’s right-back in the Premier League.

For example, he only won 44% of his duels in the Bundesliga last year. Liverpool correspondent Dominic King noted this week that the Dutchman “has not had a great start” to life back in England, and with Conor Bradley and even Dominik Szoboszlai as his positional rivals, Frimpong might have a tough time establishing himself at the club, even when back to full fitness.

Could it be that he is simply not a stylistic fit? Liverpool have a host of problems they need to fix, and with Mohamed Salah’s future uncertain, the signing of a new right-sided forward would deepen Frimpong’s struggles, leaving him struggling to show FSG that they have got bang for their buck.

Judging by the reactions, McCullum’s latest attempt has only attracted more unfriendly fire. Particularly at him. Though his contract runs until 2027, a deal which takes into account his white-ball head coach role, he will likely be first for the block if things go further south. Suggesting that five days of training leading into the Gabba Test might have been over the top plays on that idea that they wanted it too much.”There’s a fierce determination to succeed in this series, right?” McCullum said. “Sometimes that can get in your own way, clouds your judgement or affects your ability to make the right decisions in the right moments.”It’s a really fine balance between being fiercely driven, competitive and desperate to succeed, and that getting in the way of yourself.”It’s the coaches’ job to find that balance in them as well. I firmly believe it’s not training five days straight in sapping conditions as the answer. We need to keep a little bit in the tank physically, a little bit in the tank emotionally, to be able to allow yourself to embrace the conditions you’re being challenged with.”When you come to Australia, it’s such a stark contrast in each ground you go to and the surfaces you play on, you can’t just have one set preparation. You need to make sure you’re ready for whatever is coming and adapt to it. I didn’t think we were quite good enough at that in this Test with either bat or ball.”McCullum subsequently went on to back Ollie Pope, England’s No. 3 under Stokes and, from 2023 until this tour, their vice-captain. A promising 46 in the first Test at the Optus Stadium, featuring plenty of straight drives that suggested better balance and alignment, was followed by 33, 0 and 26. All four innings ended with wince-inducing dismissals that suggested in-play, in-series regressions despite a lot of hard work in the lead-up. Nevertheless, McCullum – unsurprisingly – is sticking by his man.”I think most people were frenetic outside off stump on this pitch tonight,” he said, which actually makes you wonder why England did not sit on that line during Australia’s mammoth first-innings of 511. “Popey has been number three. He’s done well. He’s averaged 40 odd [40.58] for us. He’s our number three here in Australia.”There was greater support for another Surrey man, Jamie Smith. The newest member of the top seven, the wicketkeeper’s arrival into the team at the start of 2024 was as the best of two worlds, between the glovework of Ben Foakes and the outlandish strokeplay of Jonny Bairstow. Right now, he is falling well short of both.A dropped catch off Travis Head and innings of 0 and 4 were the latest extensions of a batting decline that may be attributed to crouching behind the stumps far more than he is used to. Since the start of the summer, he has kept wicket for 1,375.3 overs across eight Tests. “He’s a flair player, and he likes to approach the game in a simple way,” McCullum said. “He works very hard on his game, but he also has the courage and conviction, when he feels he’s given himself the best chance. It doesn’t guarantee everything but I’m sure he’ll appreciate the conditions in Adelaide with the boundary sizes and the pitch.”That might not be music to the ears of those who feel both are problems to address, particularly Pope. But it will tell them and the rest of the squad – including those yet to see action – that the vibes, at least, remain tight.”One thing we won’t be changing is the language in the dressing room, the way we approach the game and the style we’ve tried to operate with,” McCullum said.”Ultimately, you can’t afford to flinch when come down here. This is not a country to start doubting yourself or to walk away from the challenge. You can’t have a glass jaw when you get to Australia. You’ve got to get up and go on.”The skill level among various players all around the world, there isn’t a stark contrast. It’s those who are able to handle the big moments, able to read conditions quickly and able to adapt, problem-solve situations – they are the ones to excel. If anything, our boys need a freshen up. A few days away wouldn’t be the worst thing.”As the tide goes against them, England will head to the surfers’ paradise of Noosa and try and get back on the board. That they will be joined by journalists and photographers looking for the latest pound of flesh will not deter them from cutting loose and expending the nervous energy that comes with a nine-day lead into the third Test in Adelaide.Typically, McCullum sees the pressure on himself and Stokes as something to savour. After all, it can’t go on like this, can it?”Look, that’s the thing; the captain and I, this is the fun stuff, right? Again, you don’t get to feel sorry for yourselves and both of us stress that. We’re both tough blokes who have been in this kind of pressure in your own careers or your own stages in your own lives. You’ve been in tough situations and there’s only one way to go about it and that’s to have that belief in yourself and trust those around you who you believe in. Make sure you stay tight, keep morale high within the group and keep getting towards what you’re trying to achieve.”If the coach and captain seemed worlds apart on Sunday night in the aftermath of defeat – McCullum chipper, Stokes spent – they will use the coming three-day break to realign themselves before flying to Adelaide on Saturday. The fightback starts here. The hard work, well, that will start at the Adelaide Oval on Sunday.”We’ve been here before, 2-0 down,” said McCullum looking to 2023, “and we came within a bee’s dick of getting ourselves the win, so there’s no point in feeling sorry for yourselves. That ends in all sorts of trouble.”Just pick yourselves up, dust yourselves off, sharpen off a few of the rough areas and keep heading towards the target.”

وصرّح صلاح بأن ليفربول قد تخلى عنه، وأن علاقته بالمدرب آرني سلوت منقطعة، مبديًا اعتراضه على جلوسه بديلاً في ثلاث مباريات متتالية بالدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.

وقام سلوت باستبعاد صلاح من قائمة ليفربول للمباراة أمام إنتر ميلان في دوري أبطال أوروبا، والمقامة مساء اليوم الثلاثاء.

وقال هنري في برنامج “دوري أبطال أوروبا اليوم” عبر “cbs sports” قبل المباراة: “لا أحد يتحدث عن إنجازات محمد صلاح في المباراة، نحن نتحدث عن لحظات أعتقد أنه أخطأ فيها”.

وأضاف: “لا تتحدث عن وضعك الشخصي بصراحة عندما يعاني فريقك، تفعل ذلك في غرفة الملابس، لقد فعلتُ ذلك، ذهبتُ إلى غرفة الملابس وحطمتُ كل شيء، ذهبتُ إلى مكتب المدرب واشتكيتُ من بعض الأمور”.

وقارن هنري وضع صلاح بوضعه في برشلونة خلال موسم 2009-2010، عندما استُبعد من تشكيلة الفريق أمام فياريال.

وأردف: “عندما كنت في برشلونة، كنتُ مع الفريق، وضعوني في المدرجات، هل سمعتموني أتحدث عن ذلك؟ لا… لقد فزنا بالثلاثية في العام السابق، لكنني لم أكن أؤدي بشكل جيد، لذا إن لم أكن أؤدي بشكل جيد، فأنت تضع نفسك في موقف تترك فيه الباب مفتوحًا لشخص ما ليدخل”.

وواصل: “سافرتُ، ووصلنا إلى الملعب، وأنا في المدرجات، هل سأثير ضجة حول هذا الأمر؟ هل سأجعله يتعلق بي؟ هل سأتحدث إلى الصحافة بعد ذلك؟ لقد حققتُ إنجازات في اللعبة، لكن الفريق أولًا، إذا كان عليّ أن أقول شيئًا – وبالمناسبة، لقد قلته، قلتُ ذلك للمدرب بيب جوارديولا، ما كنتُ أفكر فيه بشأن ما كان يحدث، ولكن ليس علنًا”.

وشدد هنري: “يجب عليك حماية فريقك بأي ثمن، وفي كل الأوقات، أتفهم رغبتك في التحدث، وأتفهم إحباطك، لكنني لا أفهم كيف ومتى فعلت ذلك، هذا غير منطقي بالنسبة لي، كان ذلك خطأً، وعندما يتحدث الناس عن العلاقات، فإن العلاقة الوحيدة التي يرغب المدرب في بنائها مع اللاعب هي أن يُقدم أداءً جيدًا”.

وأتم: “إذا لم يُقدم اللاعب أداءً جيدًا، فإن مركزه مُهدد، ليس من حقه الحصول على مركز، خاصة في نادٍ مثل ليفربول… لا علاقة للأمر، مرة أخرى، بما حققه، أكرر، أنا مُعجب بمحمد صلاح، وأُعجب بما قدمه في عالم كرة القدم، هذا موضوع آخر، هذه ليست الطريقة المُثلى للتعامل مع الأمور”.

ويستضيف ملعب “ستامفورد بريدج” مباراة فريقي تشيلسي الإنجليزي وبرشلونة الإسباني، في الجولة الخامسة من دوري أبطال أوروبا، 2025/26، مرحلة الدوري.

وذكرت صحيفة “موندو ديبورتيفو” الإسبانية، أن المدير الفني لفريق برشلونة، هانز فليك، يدرك أن أربعة لاعبين على وشك الإيقاف حال تلقيهم بطاقة صفراء في مباراة الغد ضد تشيلسي.

وأوضحت أن هؤلاء اللاعبين هم لامين يامال، فرينكي دي يونج، فيرمين لوبيز ومارك كاسادو، حيث أنه في حال حصول أي منهم على بطاقة صفراء غدًا، سيتم إيقافه في مباراة آينتراخت فرانكفورت في الجولة السادسة، كونهم تحصلوا على بطاقتين صفراويتين في الجولات الماضية.

وأدى رفض ويليامز التوقيع مع برشلونة إلى وجود غضب كبير من قبل جماهير البلوجرانا، حيث قاموا بالتصفير عليه خلال لقاء البارسا الأخير مع بلباو هذا الأسبوع بالدوري الإسباني.

واعترف ويليامز في تصريحات نقلتها صحيفة “موندو ديبورتيفو”، أن حبه الكبير لبلباو هو ما جعله يرفض التوقيع مع برشلونة.

وقال ويليامز: “أتلتيك بلباو يعني لي كل شيء، لقد نضجت هنا كشخص وكلاعب ولقد علمني تمثيل هذا النادي وهذه المدينة قيمة العمل الجاد والتواضع والانتماء للعائلة، جميعنا نعلم أن أتلتيك فريد من نوعه في العالم، كما يقول شعاره”.

وعن رفض برشلونة: “لطالما وضعت مشاعري في المقام الأول واتبعت قلبي، أنا شخص محب للعائلة وقريب من أهلي، وهنا في بلباو لدي عائلتي وأحبائي الذين أستشيرهم في كل خطوة أخطوها في حياتي، أحب الاستماع إلى أخي؛ فهو دائمًا يقدم لي نصائح قيمة، والآن أن أتمكن من الاستمتاع باللعب معًا أنا وهو في دوري أبطال أوروبا، وهو حلم تحقق”.

وناقش ويليامز فرص منتخب إسبانيا في الفوز بكأس العالم، حيث أوضح: “لدينا ثقة كبيرة في أداء الفريق ونحن جميعًا متحدون خلف ما يطلبه منا المدرب، وسنستعد لكأس العالم بأفضل ما يمكن لكننا لا نحب مقارنة أنفسنا بأحد”.

وواصل: ”هناك العديد من الفرق القادرة على الفوز بكأس العالم، ومن الجيد أن يذكر اسمنا كأحد المرشحين، لكننا نعلم أن استطلاعات الرأي لا تجعلك تفوز بكأس العالم وأن الفوز بها يجب أن يكون في الملعب”.

وعن حياته الخاصة استكمل ويليامز: “أفعل ما يفعله أي فتى في مثل سني تقريبًا، أحب اللعب مع أصدقائي والتنزه، والخروج لتناول العشاء مع صديقتي كلما أمكن”.

وأثنى ويليامز بشدة على قدرات زميله في منتخب إسبانيا ونجم برشلونة، لامين يامال، حيث اختتم: “لديه موهبة مذهلة ويثبتها كل يوم، لكنه يعلم أنني بمثابة والده (يضحك)”.
