He'd bench Forrest: Celtic told to pay £5.1m to sign "flamboyant" attacker

Celtic’s lack of top-end attacking talent was made abundantly clear in their biggest game of the season.

On Wednesday night, the Hoops were held to a dire goalless draw by Kairat at Parkhead in the first leg of their Champions League play-off, having just three shots on target all night and mustering a solitary big chance.

Thus, next Tuesday evening, Brendan Rodgers’ side must win in Kazakhstan, something the Celts have never previously achieved in three attempts, losing two of them, to book their place in the Champions League league phase.

Raucous chants of ‘sack the board’ could be heard throughout the second half of Wednesday’s, potentially disastrous, draw, with supporters frustrated by the club’s lack of spending, but could that be about to change?

Celtic's lack of attacking options

For the crucial mid-week tie against Kairat, Rodgers deployed a front three of Daizen Maeda, Adam Idah, and James Forrest.

After a less-than-productive first half, Idah was hooked at the interval, with Maeda deployed down the middle, and Yang Hyun-Jun was introduced.

Within seconds of the restart, Yang found Forrest, who forced Aleksandr Zarutskiy into a very smart save down to his left, but this was followed by little else, with unproven summer signing Shin Yamada thrown on towards the end, but this merely underlined Rodgers’ lack of proven options in forward areas.

As they seek to address this, according to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, as relayed by Daily Record, Celtic have been told the fee they’ll need to pay to secure the signature of Calvin Stengs.

They claim that Feyenoord are ‘willing to cooperate in a sale’ for a player whom they value at £5.1m, but it remains to be seen whether or not the Premiership champions are willing to pay the asking price at this moment in time.

55 years ago, Celtic and Feyenoord met in the European Cup Final at San Siro, but just six men have represented both clubs, namely Colin Kazim-Richards, Regi Blinker, John Guidetti, Glenn Loovens, Pierre van Hooijdonk and, of course, the king of kings himself Henrik Larsson, so could Stengs add his name to that list?

What Calvin Stengs would bring to Celtic

Stengs joined AZ Alkmaar as an 11-year-old, and his senior breakthrough came while representing the Cheese Farmers, scoring 24 goals and registering 22 assists in 113 appearances for AZ, with five of these goals coming in Europe.

This earned him an £8.6m move to Nice in the summer of 2021, but he made almost no impact on the French Riviera, scoring just a solitary goal during his one season with the Ligue 1 outfit.

After a decent campaign on loan at Royal Antwerp, scoring three goals but racking up nine assists in Belgium, he returned to the Netherlands by joining Feyenoord, thereby reuniting with Arne Slot, who’d previously been his manager in Alkmaar.

As the table below outlines, Stengs certainly produced impressive statistics during his first Eredivisie season in Rotterdam.

As the table documents, despite somewhat limited minutes, Stengs was one of the chief creators in the Eredivisie, ending up third for assists, while also ranking highly for expected assists, key passes, shot-creating actions, and big chances created.

The highlight of his Feyenoord career actually came against Celtic, marking his Champions League debut by scoring this long-range free kick at De Kuip, one that Joe Hart believes he should’ve kept out.

Last season, however, things did not go to plan for Stengs, seeing a miserly 797 minutes of action due to knee, hamstring and ankle issues, starting just eight matches across all competitions.

To commence the new campaign, the 26-year-old has been an unused substitute for all four of Feyenoord’s fixtures, including both legs of their Champions League qualifying exit at the hands of Fenerbahçe, as manager Robin van Persie seemingly prepares for the winger’s departure.

Nevertheless, he is still a highly-rated talent.

Jacek Kulig of Football Talent Scout labels him a “flamboyant winger”, praising his pace, dribbling ability, and creativity, while Nils Mackay of Opta adds that he is a “serious talent”.

Stengs is certainly a versatile player, predominantly deployed as an attacking midfielder during his time with Feyenoord, having made a name for himself as a right-winger at AZ, earning all eight of his senior Netherlands caps in that position out wide too, most recently bagging a hat-trick against Gibraltar at Estádio Algarve.

Following the sale of Nicolas Kühn, the aforementioned Forrest is currently Celtic’s starter wide-right but, at 34 years old, having scored just one goal last season, the club legend is no longer the elite-level difference-maker he once was.

Thus, there is a clear spot up for grabs, one that Stengs could come in and make his own, and all available evidence suggests he would be an excellent addition, which would result in Forrest dropping down to the bench after he started the last two games in the Premiership and the Champions League on the right flank.

Idah upgrade: Rodgers would love Celtic to sign "world class" star for free

As Adam Idah continues to find Celtic goals hard to come by, Brendan Rodgers would love to sign a “world class” striker available on a free transfer.

Australia seal semi-finals spot after rain spoils Head's party

Only an unlikely hefty South Africa defeat at the hands of England can keep Afghanistan’s tournament alive

Tristan Lavalette28-Feb-20251:49

Jaffer: Omarzai a ‘proper genuine allrounder’

Match abandoned due to rain Befitting the latest chapter in this budding rivalry, there were wicked swings of momentum while a hobbled Australia batter at the crease evoked the wildest match in the short history between these teams. But in a great shame, Lahore’s inclement weather cut short a high-stakes contest that felt like it still had several twists ahead. Australia had been well placed at 109 for 1 after 12.5 overs chasing 274 before a downpour hit the ground. Rain eventually stopped but parts of the field were soaked and the match had to be abandoned. The teams shared the points and that was enough for Australia to progress through to the semi-finals after their second consecutive match was negated by rain. But Afghanistan saw their hopes of progression wash away as only an unlikely hefty South Africa defeat at the hands of England can keep their tournament alive.Chasing a tricky total under lights, Matthew Short came to the crease limping after picking up a quad injury in the field. Unable to run, he was clearly laboured and one wondered why he was even out there.Perhaps his one-legged presence was to spook Afghanistan and revive memories of Glenn Maxwell’s astonishing double-century at the 2023 World Cup – the last ODI between the teams.Travis Head and Steven Smith put on 65 before having to go off for rain•ICC/Getty Images

It wasn’t quite Maxwell-like, but Short’s stand-and-deliver innings did help Australia get off to a flier as he put on 44 inside five overs with Travis Head. But they were aided by sloppy Afghanistan fielding with Head dropped by Rashid Khan on 6 at mid-on after miscuing a pull off quick Fazalhaq Farooqi. He then smashed a six off the next ball to rub salt in the wounds.Short on 19 was given a reprieve by substitute Nangialai Kharoti at deep square leg as Afghanistan were getting flashbacks of Mumbai. But Short could not capitalise and fell off his next delivery when he hit Azmatullah Omarzai towards mid-on where Gulbadin Naib took a good catch before showing off his muscles in celebration.Head quickly regained Australia’s ascendency and pounced on wayward bowling from Farooqi, reaching his half-century off 34 balls. Stand-in skipper Steven Smith donned the cap once Afghanistan’s spinners entered the attack but Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmad did not threaten. Rashid had yet to bowl by the time rain spoiled the party in the 13th over with Head on 59 off 40 and Smith unbeaten on 19.It ended what had been a topsy-turvy match, with Afghanistan’s innings of 273 from 50 overs a rollercoaster. They started well with No. 3 Sediqullah Atal dominating the first half of the innings with 85 off 95 balls before Omarzai blazed 67 off 63 to power Afghanistan in the back end. But their total could have been greater if not for several rash dismissals which derailed momentum at crucial junctures.Australia’s performance with the ball was also a mishmash. Once again life without the big three quicks of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood proved tough and their 37 extras was Australia’s joint-fifth-most conceded in ODI cricket.Sediqullah Atal dominated the first half of Afghanistan’s innings with 85 off 95 balls•ICC/Getty Images

With heavy rain lashing Lahore ahead of the match, there had been fears that the match might be completely rained out much like Australia’s clash with South Africa earlier in the week. But the weather cleared in the nick of time and Afghanistan captain Hashmatullah Shahidi had no hesitation to bat first on what was expected to be a flat surface. However, the ball moved around considerably on a pitch that had spent plenty of time under the covers in the lead-up.Left-arm quick Spencer Johnson retained his spot in the team ahead of seam-bowling allrounder Sean Abbott despite being overlooked in the death overs against England.Having long drawn comparisons with Starc, Johnson would have made his mentor beam when he unfurled a deadly inswinging yorker that went through the defence of Rahmanullah Gurbaz in the opening over.Johnson isn’t a noted exponent of the full-pitch delivery, with back-of-a-length bowling more his prowess. But he was wayward after his initial breakthrough and a flustered Smith could not contain his annoyance as the extras leaked. All eyes were on Ibrahim Zadran after his record-breaking Champions Trophy knock of 177 against England. He and Atal were in survival mode early as the ball flew past the bat on numerous occasions, but they held firm in a 67-run partnership to see off the new-ball threat. After all that fight, Zadran didn’t kick on and he fell tamely on 22 when he whacked a short and wide delivery off legspinner Adam Zampa straight to backward point. Maxwell supported Zampa well and picked up Rahmat Shah after a sharp catch by Josh Inglis behind the stumps as Afghanistan slumped to 91 for 3.Azmatullah Omarzai kept Afghanistan going even as wickets fell at the other end•ICC/Getty Images

Atal was unperturbed by the predicament and decided to force the issue against the spinners, targeting deep midwicket to good effect as he smashed a six to reach his half-century in style off 64 balls.Atal was on a roll and successfully collared Zampa out of the attack. He did have luck on 74 when a big lbw shout from seamer Nathan Ellis was turned down. Australia did not review in the belief that the ball pitched outside leg stump, but replays confirmed otherwise.Australia were not made to pay after Smith made his latest successful bowling change by reverting back to Johnson, who ended Atal’s bid for a second ODI century when he hit straight to cover. With Atal’s free-flowing innings dashed, Afghanistan went through a lull in the middle overs with the culprit being Shahidi who dawdled to 20 off 48 before miscuing a sweep off Zampa to square leg. His strike rate of 40.81 was the third lowest by an Afghan batter in ODIs (min 40 balls faced) in this decade.Australia so far in this tournament have banked on batting depth, but they’ve had part-time spinners step up. Against England it was Marnus Labuschagne’s legspin, while Short stepped up here to concede just 21 runs from seven extremely handy overs.Afghanistan spiralled and lost Nabi to a comical run-out as they slid to 199 for 7 and seemed to be falling well short of a competitive score. But Omarzai took over by farming the strike and his power-hitting saw five mighty blows sail over the rope, three off Ellis who is normally so proficient at the death. There was an unusual incident late in the innings that could have blown up when Noor drifted from his crease believing the over was done only for Inglis to take the bails off after the throw came in from the deep. Inglis appealed for a run-out only for Smith to nip a potential controversial moment in the bud by telling the umpires not to consider the appeal. The moment proved a non-event to foreshadow what was ahead later in the night.

New Gakpo: Liverpool agree personal terms for "unplayable" new signing

Liverpool have entered the 2025/26 campaign with a weight of expectation that was not there when Arne Slot led the Reds out for the first time one year ago.

The 2024/25 Premier League champions have won both their opening league fixtures this season, though four goals shipped and late winners required against Bournemouth and Newcastle United have shown that there is plenty of room for improvement for Slot’s side.

As the summer transfer window reaches the final stretch, clubs throughout the Premier League and all over Europe will scramble to wrap up deals that have dragged on and on.

And Liverpool are no different. Crystal Palace centre-back Marc Guehi remains a top target for the Reds, with talks said to be ongoing on that front.

But there’s one man above all others who is locked in sporting director Richard Hughes’ sights.

Liverpool reach agreement for top target

There is little question that Liverpool’s priority as we enter this last lap of the transfer circuit remains the signing of Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak.

The Magpies have floundered all summer, and still haven’t been able to land a new number nine. A second bid from FSG, having seen a £110m offer rejected at the start of August, will only come after encouragement from Tyneside, and that has yet to happen.

Even so, Sky Sports Germany’s Florian Plettenberg has confirmed that Liverpool have reached an agreement with the Sweden international on personal terms, and they are “waiting patiently” to finalise the deal.

PIF officials tried to convince the 25-year-old to stay in the wake of Liverpool’s win at St. James’ Park, but Isak’s stance is the same.

It would take a mammoth fee to prise the goalscorer away from Eddie Howe’s side, with Newcastle still maintaining he is worth £150m.

What Alexander Isak would bring to Liverpool

What would Isak bring to Liverpool? Goals, and goals aplenty at that.

The rangy centre-forward scored 27 times for Newcastle across all competitions last season, netting against Liverpool in the Carabao Cup final and finishing behind only Mohamed Salah in the Premier League scoring charts.

Hailed by Jamie Carragher as being “the best striker in the Premier League ” for his efforts across the recent campaign – certainly, he was the most complete, the most effective from his all-round berth – Isak would be a stunning addition to a Liverpool side already boasting so much firepower and attacking quality.

Not only a destructive finisher, the £120k-per-week Magpie has mastered the art of link-up play, so fast and dynamic as he shifts about the frontline, and it’s been evident from the beginning, with journalist David Cartlidge remarking that his all-encompassing game made him “unplayable” way back in 2022, when he plied his craft for Real Sociedad in Spain.

The 6 foot 3 Isak’s tall frame, strong physicality and quality in working into wider attacking berths suggest he could mirror Gakpo at Liverpool, even though the Dutchman is more of a natural wide forward.

Gakpo offers a bit more by way of creative output than Isak, but he arcs into the box with a regularity that evades most wide-placed forwards.

However, both attackers are crisp in possession, comparatively active in their progressive passing play, and able and effective ball carriers, both successfully taking on their man with the same consistency.

Against Bournemouth on the opening day of the season, Gakpo showcased his completeness, getting on the scoresheet and making a series of key passes, winning an abundance of duels.

Cody Gakpo vs Bournemouth

Gakpo’s running style and ability to take on opponents might lend themselves to a fixed role on the left flank, but Isak has also demonstrated in the past a skill when shifting out wide.

Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope even remarked that the Sweden international was “like a wizard” when zipping down the left flank and setting up a goal extraordinarily against Everton in 2023.

Of course, there’s also the element that Isak has plied his trade in the Dutch Eredivisie in the past, actually first establishing himself as a prolific goalscorer when on loan at Willem II in 2018/19, scoring 14 goals across 18 appearances.

Liverpool signed Gakpo directly from the Dutch scene in January 2023, landing PSV Eindhoven’s superstar following his limelight-stealing performances at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, bagging in each of Oranje’s group stage outings.

It might have taken the 25-year-old a bit of time to adapt to the English game and truly click into gear, as he has in Slot’s system, having been hailed by pundit Peter Crouch as having “gone up a level”, but Gakpo is now an integral part of Liverpool’s success, especially now that Luis Diaz has been sold to Bayern Munich.

However, Isak has already equipped three years’ worth of experience on his belt, and could feasibly be expected to hit the ground running and lead Liverpool to trophy-winning success over the coming season – and beyond.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Given that the Newcastle star has the Premier League qualities and a Gakpo-esque style in the final third, there’s every chance that he could prove a bona fide success for Liverpool, providing the cream at the end of an incredible transfer window.

Man City vs Man Utd: Team news, predicted line-ups, injury updates & odds

With Manchester City set to host Manchester United in the 197th Manchester derby on Sunday, we’ve taken a look at who could come out on top, the likely line-ups and injury concerns for both sides heading into the all-important affair.

Man City vs Man Utd team news

Starting with Man City, to say that it’s been a frustrating international break would be an understatement. The Citizens have come back with further injury woes and now have as many as 10 players on the treatment table. Given that Pep Guardiola’s side have just suffered back-to-back defeats at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur and Brighton, it’s the last thing that they needed.

Guardiola spoke about his side’s injury woes in his pre-match press conference, saying: “Omar is injured from Egypt [international duty]. John Stones as well is a doubt. [It’s] not a big issue, but he’s a doubt for Sunday. Rayan Cherki [is also injured] but the rest are fine.”

The Spaniard confirmed that Omar Mamoush will be out for a number of weeks alongside Rayan Ait-Nouri, whilst Stones and Cherki are also doubts to face Man United this weekend. There could, however, be a debut for Gianluigi Donnarumma.

In the red corner, meanwhile, things aren’t much better on the injury front. Ruben Amorim confirmed that Matheus Cunha, Mason Mount and Diogo Dalot are all unavailable after taking knocks before and during the international break, handing his side a frustrating blow.

The Man United boss told reporters: “I think they are out for this game. I don’t know how long it is going to take. We need those players to be a very, very competitive team, but we have very good players that are eager to play, so we will be competitive on Sunday, but they are out, they cannot help us in this game.”

The Portuguese manager also remained coy when asked about a potential debut for Senne Lammens, which means that Altay Bayindir could get one last chance to impress.

Man City predicted line-up (4-3-3): Donnarumma; Nunes; Dias; Ake; Gvardiol; Rodri; Reijnders; Silva; Bobb; Haaland; Doku

Man United predicted line-up (3-4-2-1): Bayindir; Yoro; De Ligt; Shaw; Amad; Mainoo; Casemiro; Dorgu; Mbeumo, Fernandes; Sesko

Man City vs Man Utd recent results

The Manchester derby is never an easy one to predict. For all of Man City’s Premier League dominance across the last six years, they’ve not been without games to forget against their local rivals. And that proved to be the case last season.

Even as Amorim’s side stumbled to a woeful bottom-half finish, they managed to take three points at The Etihad in dramatic fashion – scoring twice in the final two minutes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.

What instantly stands out about recent meetings is Man United’s record. The Red Devils have lost just once in five games in normal time against their rivals and will be looking to go five games unbeaten this weekend.

Coming into the game, form would suggest that Man United should actually have the edge. Amorim’s side entered the international break off the back of a last-gasp 3-2 win against Burnley, whilst Man City entered off the back of two defeats in three games.

Man City vs Man Utd predictions and odds

Although recent form says different, the bookies have got Man City as favourites heading into the Manchester derby. At 8/11, the Citizens are being backed to secure their first victory for a month and their first win over their rivals in over a year. Man United, meanwhile, are priced at 10/3 to shock Guardiola and co. at The Etihad once again and a draw sits at 14/5.

Both sides could do with victory here, that is undeniable. A victory for Man United would be a much-needed statement after their nervy showing against Burnley and Carabao Cup upset at the hands of Grimsby.

They now have four of the five top totals in the IPL.Kishan, who was bought for INR 11.25 crore at the auction, credited Pat Cummins for giving him and the entire team “a lot of freedom” to play a fearless and ultra-aggressive brand of cricket that head coach Daniel Vettori said they’ll continue to exhibit.Ishan Kishan slammed his first IPL hundred•BCCI

“The skipper, he’s giving a lot of freedom to everyone,” Kishan said. “Doesn’t matter if you get a lot of runs or if you get out early. Until and unless you’re doing everything for the team, it’s all fair. That’s the confidence every player in the team needs, so hats off to him and the management.”Kishan spoke of drawing confidence from the way Abhishek Sharma and Head started and underlined their plans of targeting RR’s key bowlers straightaway. He finished unbeaten on 106 off just 47 balls – his century is the third-fastest for SRH, behind Travis Head (41 balls) and David Warner (43 balls).”When Abhishek and Head started, they gave a lot of confidence to us batters in the dugout,” Kishan said. “Credit goes to them also. Whenever you get such good starts, you just have to go. You can take a few balls if you want.”It gives a lot of benefit to the No. 3 and No. 4 batters [in getting their eye in]. Credit goes to them. The pitch was really good, we were just trying to get them under pressure at any point of time, trying to get all their best bowlers to bowl around the 12-13th over, so that worked our way.”
