In Focus: Keane would provide bright defensive future at Everton

As reported by The Guardian, Ronald Koeman’s interest in defender Michael Keane hasn’t faded, again enthusing about the qualities the defender brings to Burnley.

What’s the story?

Michael Keane’s task this weekend was trying to stop Everton scoring and while he may have been powerless to stop the likes of Romelu Lukaku netting against the Clarets, it’s unlikely to have dissuaded Ronald Koeman of chasing him this summer.

Speaking ahead of Saturday’s fixture, Koeman was full of praise for the 24 year old which, added to recent Liverpool Echo reports he is still on the Everton transfer wish-list, certainly points to a potential move for the defender when the transfer window re-opens.

As quoted by The Guardian, Koeman said:

He is one of the defenders really involved in the season of Burnley. It’s not easy to score and it is not easy to create against them. They have good organisation and it will be hard to create open chances against them. I think he’s one of the young centre-backs with a great future.

It’s high praise for an opposition player, especially in the days before competing against him. It’s unlikely the words of Koeman weren’t said for a reason and it’ll be interesting to see if the Dutch manager follows up his obvious admiration for the England international.

The answer?

Koeman was correct to assert the important of Keane to Burnley this season. He’s been key to their style and the results that have taken them this far on their return to the Premier League. Eight points clear of the relegation zone, it appears as if his side have done enough to survive  yoyoing backing to the Championship.

At just 24 he has his best years ahead of him and with the likes of Phil Jagielka ageing at Goodison Park, they need young, fresh blood to lead them into a new era.

With recent caps for England boosting his reputation and just one year left on his contract at Turf Moor, it appears the stars are aligning for him to win a big move away from Burnley and Everton should do all they can to ensure it’s to the Toffees.

Marco should be the Silva lining to West Ham potential Bilic axing

To Hull and back sums it up, with the Tigers having been through more than your average promoted team this season. As far as starts to life back in the big time go, the Humbersiders had a difficult one. Steve Bruce vacated the hot-seat at the KCOM Stadium on the eve of the season’s kick-off and off-field issues prevented Mike Phelan, who stepped in to lead the team, from adding the quality many were adamant he needed in the transfer market to have even a chance of fighting against the drop, while captain Michael Dawson remained on the sidelines through injury and Mohamed Diame moved on.

Nobody gave Hull a chance, yet now with Marco Silva at the helm after his winter arrival, there’s a glimmer of hope and the Tigers’ claws are stretching through a crack in the door that many thought simply would not exist for them back in August.

Back-to-back wins, including the slaying of reigning champions Leicester on the opening weekend, proved somewhat a false dawn as the losses began to rain in, yet with five games left to play 17th position is theirs, with a demoralised Swansea two points back on them ahead of Middlesbrough and Sunderland, who appear to have accepted the trapdoor opening beneath their feet.

Silva’s introduction was the pivotal moment of the campaign for Hull and may be looked back on as one of the finest decisions in the club’s history. Of course, relegation may be their ultimate fate, but should he keep them up, there’s a convincing argument for the Portuguese tactician being named the Premier League’s Manager of the Season ahead of even Antonio Conte at Chelsea.

To some that may seem laughable, but a glance at his squad and the players lost in January – Robert Snodgrass remains their top scorer and assist-maker in league action despite moving on – really puts his achievements into perspective. Oumar Niasse is scoring goals, Lazar Markovic is contributing, Andrea Ranocchia has not been exposed as the slow, cumbersome centre-back he was billed and Hull are getting victories, seven in 17 games, to be precise.

As far as putting himself in the shop window goes, Silva has done a sterling job thus far, taking a spot at the centre of a display that West Ham are certainly looking at. With Simone Inzaghi having been “offered” a contract to replace Slaven Bilic, it seems that the Croatian’s days at the London Stadium are numbered, despite the Hammers board’s public stance that he remains their man.

In some ways the Irons boss has been a victim of circumstance. The botched move to Stratford has magnified the attention placed on the club while Dimitri Payet’s exit was far from acrimonious, yet Bilic has to take his portion of the blame, too. Losing a Europa League qualification double-header to Astra Giurgiu rather set the tone for the campaign thus far and there have been far too many weaknesses exposed for the ex-Besiktas man to get away with it.

There seems to be a ‘big name’ phenomenon at West Ham now, but Silva might well be the ideal manager to come in. Understated in his approach and appearance, the ex-Olympiakos chief – who has courted controversy during his career, particularly at Sporting CP when he was sacked as a result of not wearing an official suit for a cup game – may not grab the headlines to the extent of some of the other names being talked about in relation to the role, yet he boasts the nous and experience to suggest he’s just what the club need.

Silverware in Greece may be written off as a given due to the team he was in charge of while Portuguese football is also seen as a closed shop at the top – albeit Sporting, Porto and Benfica are very competitive – however his work at Estoril is particularly intriguing. Picking up the reigns in the second tier, Silva took the Canaries up at the first time of asking, which he followed with a fifth-placed finish in the Primeira Liga in 2012/13 and Europa League qualification. During this time, he developed a reputation for being a savvy tactician, which shone through his subsequent appointments and has been on show, arguably to its greatest extent, on the banks of the River Humber.

Only signing a short-term deal to get through to the end of the season, it seems that the 39-year-old has ambitions beyond Hull within England and West Ham might well be the most appealing option available to him. For all the deriding of the Hammers this term, they’re a club with a high ceiling and are entering a key period in their plans to progress, which is the sort of project Silva might well be on board with. The players that would be available to him are also of a greater standard in general, so there is real potential there for the Lisbon-born coach.

Marquee announcements and headlines appear to be what West Ham want now to kick off their new chapter, but Silva might be the unsung hero to save the day the day.

Three reasons Claude Puel’s comments on Van Dijk mean little

Southampton manager Claude Puel says he expects Virgil van Dijk to start next season with the club as speculation continues over the Saints skipper’s future.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference before the south coast outfit’s Premier League clash against Arsenal at St Mary’s on Wednesday night, he gave an update on the Dutch defender’s fitness with the 25-year-old missing since January because of an ankle injury.

In his comments, the French boss said that he believes the directors want to keep Van Dijk at the club and that he expects him to be available for the first game of next season.

Despite being on the sidelines since the start of 2017 and being unlikely to make a comeback until pre-season, the Netherlands international is still said to be a £50m target for the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal this summer.

Because of incidences involving Southampton players over the course of the past few summers, perhaps it wasn’t wise for Puel to speak out on the captain’s future.

Here are three reasons his comments on Van Dijk’s future mean little…

Fans have heard it all before

Time after time over the course of the past three or four summers, Southampton chiefs have said that they want to keep hold of their best players during the summer and it has turned out not to be the case.

While there has been a few exceptions – such as when they demanded Morgan Schneiderlin stay another season – in the main the likes of Adam Lallana, Sadio Mane and Victor Wanyama have all gone without too much of a fight.

Fans can easily get their hopes when comments like this are made and Puel would have been better off avoiding the subject of the Van Dijk speculation altogether.

Money talks

Southampton have also proved over the course of the last few summers that money talks, and while that is fair enough as they look to continue to be a well run club, it means that they should keep quiet when it comes to the future of their key players.

With a potential world-record £50m fee said to be the asking price for Van Dijk, Saints would find it hard to turn down a bid of that amount should they get it from one of the Premier League’s big boys.

It is a price that would allow them to bring in three or four players to strengthen the squad, and that is an opportunity they are unlikely to refuse no matter how key the Dutchman may be.

Player power

Of course in the modern era players are having more influence on transfers and it is the reason the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley could leave Everton this summer.

If a player is seen to be unhappy or not putting in 100% effort then the manager will undoubtedly look to get rid as he wants committed players at the club.

While Van Dijk doesn’t seem like that kind of character, his injury problem in the second half of the season may convince him that he can’t turn down the opportunity to move to a club competing in the Champions League at the end of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur fans wanted Eriksen to win POTM over Son

Tottenham Hotspur won the double in terms of the Premier League’s monthly awards, with Mauricio Pochettino and Son Heung-min picking up the gongs.

However, there are a handful of fans who are not particularly satisfied with one of the award winners.

Some took to Twitter to claim that Christian Eriksen was more deserving, despite Son scoring five times in the month of April, including two against Watford.

Son is yet to fully cement a spot in Pochettino’s starting XI having started just 20 Premier League games and coming on as a substitute in a further 11.

He is generally effective when he gets on the pitch, though, scoring 12 goals and registering four assists in the top flight.

Son also impressed in the FA Cup as he scored six goals in five outings before their tournament was ended by Chelsea in the semi-finals.

Despite Son’s statistics in April, some fans wish that Eriksen had been named Premier League Player of the Month after he scored two goals and two assists.

Patrick Roberts reveals no Man City contact – future still up in air

As reported by The Evening Times, Patrick Roberts has paid tribute to the Celtic supporters that have given him vociferous backing over the last 18 months, also revealing that nothing has yet been decided about where he’ll be playing next season.

What’s the story?

Wherever Patrick Roberts ends up after the summer, he will likely go down as one of the greatest loan signings Celtic have ever had, up alongside the likes of Robbie Keane and Craig Bellamy. Making almost 60 appearances for the Hoops over the last 18 months, he’s been a constant delight on the wing for Celtic, scoring plenty of goals and providing lots of assists.

It’s meant he’s become something of a hero at the club and he’s revealed that adoration could play a big part in deciding where he actually plies his trade, based on advice from his Mum!

He’s also revealed that his parent club have not yet discussed his future with him, instead letting him get on with the task of delivering the Scottish Cup this Saturday.

As quoted by The Evening Times, the young Englishman said:

“Nobody at City has been in touch. They want me to enjoy the final, get the trophy, and we’ll talk after that. Could I stay? It’s hard. One thing my Mum has always said is that you want to be adored by fans and I’ve always wanted to get people off their seat, that’s what I enjoy, putting on a show.

“It is great to hear the fans sing my name and to feel that love is something I could only dream about. Any player will tell you that to get that much love in football is hard to come by these days.

“Fans like ours have so much love for me – I adore the fans here.”

It appears that if anything makes him stay at Celtic in the future, it will be the fans. Like he says, he’s a showman and enjoys entertaining fans, as evident in his swashbuckling, flamboyant playing style.

Are these words a hint that he’s genuinely considering doing what he can to stay in Glasgow? Or is he simply reminiscing on a fantastic 18 months at the club?

Whatever happens, you can hardly argue that the entire move hasn’t been a success and that he will always be fondly remembered by Hoops supporters.

Three reasons Chelsea must sign Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso

According to reports in L’Equipe last week, Chelsea are interested in signing Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso if they fail to complete a deal for Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko.

Blues manager Antonio Conte is desperate to bring in some competition for the likes of N’Golo Kante, Nemanja Matic and Cesc Fabregas in the middle of the park this summer, and his number one target was said to be Bakayoko.

However, with the Ligue 1 champions already selling Bernardo Silva to Manchester City and with the likes of Benjamin Mendy and Kylian Mbappe heavily linked with moves away as well, they could decide to hold on to Bakayoko unless they receive an offer they can’t refuse.

If that turns out to be the case Conte could turn his attentions to Tolisso, who has been an impressive performer for Lyon this season after helping them to a fourth-placed finish, and the Frenchman could be tempted by the lure of guaranteed Champions League football.

Here are three reasons Chelsea should sign Tolisso this summer…

His performances

The 22-year-old will be on the radar of a number of top clubs across Europe following a standout season for the Ligue 1 outfit.

The midfielder scored 14 goals and provided a further seven assists in 47 appearances in all competitions for the French club, but while he is impressive from an attacking point of view, he also adds value with the defensive side of his game too.

The Frenchman made 40 clearances and 36 interceptions in 30 league appearances this term.

He will have a point to prove

According to ESPN FC last month, Tolisso wants to play Champions League football next season and he won’t be able to do that if he stays with Lyon, whose fourth-place finish only guaranteed them a spot in the Europa League next term.

The reason he wants to play in Europe’s elite competition is to boost his chances of featuring for France at the 2018 World Cup, and that would mean that he has a real point to prove if he was to move to Chelsea, which would only benefit the Blues.

Price tag

According to reports in The Telegraph last month Bakayoko could cost Chelsea around £43m this summer if they were to bring him to Stamford Bridge, but it is likely that Tolisso could be purchased for a fee lower than that with Lyon not in the limelight like Monaco currently are.

With the French club failing to qualify for the Champions League and the player seemingly wanting out as a result, the Blues will be confident that they could sign the 22-year-old for a reasonable price.

Tottenham Hotspur star Son undergoes surgery, fans react

Concerns were raised when Tottenham Hotspur forward Son Heung-min left the pitch clutching his arm during an international clash on Tuesday.

The 24-year-old was representing South Korea in a World Cup qualifier against Qatar, but he failed to finish the match after landing awkwardly following an aerial challenge.

It was a disappointing night all round for Son, whose nation ended up losing 3-2 in Doha, and now it seems that his pre-season will be disrupted.

Tottenham have since confirmed on their official website that Son has fractured his right forearm and will undergo surgery today, which according to the Daily Mail could keep him on the sidelines for at least a month.

This could put Son’s pre-season in doubt, with Spurs due to begin preparations for the 2017-18 campaign on July 3, which will be followed by a 10-day tour of the United States.

Tottenham, who finished second last season, will face Newcastle United in their league opener on August 12.

Son was an important figure in Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the recent campaign, scoring 21 goals in all competitions.

Fans have been giving their reaction to the news of Son’s injury blow.

Southampton fans delighted as Sam Gallagher signs new deal

Southampton announced on Saturday that striker Sam Gallagher had signed a new four-year deal with the club. The 21-year-old impressed on loan in the Championship with Blackburn Rovers last season, scoring 12 times in what proved to be a difficult campaign for the former Premier League winners as they were relegated to League One.The centre-forward made his Saints debut in November 2013 and despite going on to score two goals in 20 appearances in all competitions throughout that season, he hasn’t appeared for the first team since.A disappointing loan spell with MK Dons in the 2015/16 campaign followed, before he made the move to Ewood Park last summer.Southampton supporters were quick to have their say on the new deal for the 21-year-old, and they were understandably delighted that another of their youngsters had committed his long-term future to the club after making such an impressive impact with Rovers. Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…

Three reasons Chelsea should steer clear of signing Sergio Aguero

According to Sky Sports, Chelsea have a “serious and strong interest” in signing Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero this summer.

Blues boss Antonio Conte wants to sign a new centre-forward before the start of the new season after telling Diego Costa that he is no longer part of his plans.

The Premier League holders have already missed out on Romelu Lukaku to Manchester United and the Italian will need to find an alternative target as the club looks to retain their top flight title and compete on their return to the Champions League group stages next term.

Sky Sports reports that Aguero is a possible target, and the 29-year-old certainly comes with great pedigree having scored 122 goals in 181 Premier League appearances for City, and 169 in 253 outings in total.

However, there are other ways in which he isn’t the new striker the west London outfit needs.

Here are three reasons Chelsea should steer clear of signing Aguero…

A deal would be difficult

Britain Football Soccer – Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion – Premier League – Etihad Stadium – 16/5/17 Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola Reuters / Andrew Yates Livepic EDITORIAL USE ONLY. While Chelsea may be keen on Sergio Aguero and the player could jump at the chance of staying in the Premier League and being the first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge, doing a deal with Manchester City would be difficult.

While it seems obvious that Gabriel Jesus was Pep Guardiola’s preferred option up top last term, City will have plenty of matches this season and Aguero will get his fair share of game time – as he did during the previous campaign when Jesus was injured.

City will also be reluctant to do business with their top flight title rivals, and the Blues may be better off switching their attentions to a more realistic target.

Style of play

Chelsea’s style of play in recent years has often been revolved around a big and physical striker such as Didier Drogba or Diego Costa, and signing the 5’8” Aguero to play as a lone centre-forward would certainly be different for the Blues.

Whether Conte is willing to go all out to do that rather than attempting to sign the likes of Alvaro Morata, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Andrea Belotti – who would be more adapted to the system – remains to be seen and it would certainly be a big gamble in what is going to be a hugely important season.

Injury record/Temperament

Britain Football Soccer – Manchester City v AS Monaco – UEFA Champions League Round of 16 First Leg – Etihad Stadium, Manchester, England – 21/2/17 Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero looks dejected Action Images via Reuters / Lee Smith Livepic

While Aguero hasn’t had too many serious injuries during his time with City, he does seem to have had a lot of niggles that have kept him out for weeks at a time and that would be a worry for Antonio Conte if he was to splash out on the 29-year-old.

Additionally, one of the reasons the Italian will be keen to get rid of Costa is because of his temperament – although it has improved recently – and he would have been concerned to see Aguero lose his head against his team last term, picking up a red card in the last minute for a dreadful challenge on David Luiz and a four-match suspension in the process.

In Focus: Arsenal and Tottenham target Karamoh would be one for the future

According to reports in The Mirror, north London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly keeping tabs on in demand Caen winger Yann Karamoh, who is also a target for Inter Milan and Fiorentina.

What’s the word, then?

Well, The Mirror says that the Premier League duo have sent scouts to watch the impressive 19-year-old, who is rated at just under £9m.

Newcastle United and Southampton have also been linked with the wide-man, whose showings helped the Ligue 1 outfit finish 17th and narrowly avoid relegation from the top flight last term.

However, Karamoh’s contract runs out in a year’s time and talkSPORT says that as the young Frenchman is unwilling to sign a new deal, Caen want to cash in on him this summer.

Arsenal are clearly in the market for a winger as they continue to pursue Monaco’s Thomas Lemar, while Tottenham could also be looking to strengthen in wide areas with Erik Lamela and Son Heung-Min set to miss the start of the new season because of injury.

How good was Karamoh last season?

He was very good.

Despite his tender years, the France Under-21 international scored five goals and provided a further four assists in 35 appearances for the Ligue 1 strugglers, and he consistently showed the qualities that he has.

While he is still far from the finished article, the 19-year-old loves to dribble and run at opposition defenders and he successfully completed 50 take-ons in 35 top flight outings last term.

Would he be a good signing for Arsenal or Tottenham?

As one for the future, he certainly would be.

The Gunners certainly should not be keeping tabs on Karamoh as a possible alternative to Lemar, as while he looks to have great potential, he is miles behind the Monaco star in terms of quality, consistency and experience at the highest level.

It would be a similar situation if the winger was to join Spurs, as he would more than likely be a useful option from the substitutes’ bench rather than a regular first team starter, but Mauricio Pochettino’s men do look to need more options in attack.

What’s the verdict, then?

Well, there is no doubt that Karamoh made a big impression last season and looks to have a bright future, but it seems doubtful that he would be able to have an impact for either Arsenal or Tottenham in the short-term.
