£70k-p/w Leeds ace who's missed last 12 games returns to training after injury

With their sights set on Championship promotion, Leeds United are set to receive the boost of a returning star who hasn’t played since the start of the year in an injury-ridden campaign.

Leeds injury news

They may sit top of the Championship, but that doesn’t mean Leeds have had it easy on the injury front throughout the current campaign. At the beginning of the campaign, Daniel Farke was forced to turn towards the likes of Ao Tanaka earlier than planned due to an injury crisis in midfield. To his credit, the former Bundesliga midfielder has thrived at the heart of a side gunning for silverware and become one of their star men.

With the fixtures coming thick and fast at the end of the Championship campaign and everything still to play for, there’s no doubt that Farke will be keen to welcome key men back to his strongest side and get over the line in the race for promotion.

It looks as though the German is set to get his wish on that front too, having told reporters that Patrick Bamford is now back in training and on course for a return at Leeds for the first time in 12 games.

Leeds targeting fresh off-field move in key step towards replacing Kinnear

They’re reportedly set to lose their CEO…

ByTom Cunningham Mar 7, 2025

The former Norwich City manager said in his press conference when asked about potential returns: “Everyone who was available for the last game is available for this game, which is definitely good news. All were able to recover from knocks from the last game.

“Some other good news is Patrick Bamford was able to take part in team training this week. He was out for nine weeks, but he was able to handle the load and that’s good news because he is making good progress.

“It’s also good news on Ethan Ampadu and Max Wober and we are still hopeful we will have them the other side of the international break. We are hopeful for the run in.”

Bamford could provide unexpected boost

Whilst some may be quick to write Bamford off after a campaign full of injuries and a lack of goals, he could yet provide a surprising boost for Farke’s side at a crucial time. Of course, this isn’t the star striker who reached double figures in the Premier League, but he is still a player who should add vital depth and extensive experience in the Leeds dressing room.

Almost into the last year of his current £70,000-a-week contract, it remains to be seen whether Bamford will find himself at Elland Road as they potentially step into the Premier League. For now, his focus should be on making his mark on a season which has threatened to run away from him.

Having missed the last 12 games, the Whites shouldn’t rush the forward back to action as soon as Portsmouth, but games such as Queens Park Rangers next weekend could be one to keep an eye on if he continues to step up his recovery.

Jemimah Rodrigues: Pressure of boys cricket on Mumbai maidans fuelled World Cup heroics

Batter went out of comfort zone in bid to overcome 50-over World Cup axing

From “one of the lowest phases” of her life following her omission from the 50-over World Cup, to a tension-easing half-century as India began the 20-over version with victory against Pakistan, Jemimah Rodrigues likes how life is going right now, but says she owes her turnaround to some turners on Mumbai’s maidans.Rodrigues’ unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 58 with Richa Ghosh handed India a seven-wicket victory after their opponents set them 150 to win. They got there with just one over to spare and afterwards Rodrigues, who scored a 38-ball 53 not out, said that playing alongside 14-year-old boys in Mumbai after being dropped from last year’s squad exposed her to the sort of pressure needed to help pull off India’s highest successful run-chase at a Women’s T20 World Cup.”I’d taken a break when I went back to my coach Prashant Shetty and my dad,” Rodrigues recalled. “We worked out our plan. In a week I had to play two games, more match time, the rest I would practise and Sunday was my day off. At the same time I was putting myself in challenging situations.”I was not playing on flat wickets, I was playing on turning wickets. In Mumbai I went to Azad Maidan during that time and I was playing matches against the boys. In the morning, there’s so much dew, this huge ground, many pitches, nobody covers the ground – you can put your finger inside the pitch. In those conditions I had to play under-19 boys.”Second-innings it’s a drastic change, it’s turning square and good quality bowlers. In the first game of the tournament I scored some 45-odd runs and that gives you a lot of confidence, that is like scoring 80 on a flat track. So putting myself in such situations actually helped me, getting out of my comfort zone. It was the toughest part.”I played with under-14 boys. Imagine the kind of pressure, me being an India player playing with under-14 boys, if I lose my wicket, ‘kya hai ye’ [what is she even]. It’s like that – those are the thoughts in my head. That was a lot of pressure but I had to fight through those thoughts.”But I believe all these little things just build up and make you the player you are, and I am grateful for everything that happened. You give me an option to go back and change things. I wouldn’t change anything. I like how my life is going.”Rodrigues was left out of the squad for the 50-over tournament in New Zealand after failing to reach double figures in five ODI innings in 2021, making her last appearance in the format in July of that year. In T20Is during that time, her highest score was 49 not out from five games, although she enjoyed a resurgence last year, averaging 38.58 from 20 matches. But it took a lot of hard work and plenty of support from family, friends, team-mates and Shetty to help her navigate the toughest times.Rodrigues survived a stumping attempt by Muneeba Ali•ICC/Getty Images

“Honestly, many times I had nothing to tell myself,” Rodrigues said. “There were so many times I’d given up, I didn’t have the strength to carry [on].”I changed the way I practise. I changed the way I plan my innings. I understood my game better. I understood the value of good relationships at that time and at the same time it felt like that was that was one of the lowest phases of my life but it turned out to be the reason why I could come here today.”It was exactly this time last year when I was home and I wasn’t in a good headspace because I was dropped from the 50-over World Cup. That was the toughest time for me. If it was not for my family and my parents and my brothers and there’s so many people I couldn’t name them because we’ll sit here until 12 o’clock at night. There were so many people who helped me throughout this time.”Rodrigues struck three fours in what turned out to be the final over to seal victory at Newlands on Sunday, in a match played before a good-natured crowd whose enthusiastic cheering belied its modest size – recorded during India’s innings at 3,578.Related

Rodrigues, Ghosh punish sloppy Pakistan to seal tense chase

“When I came out today, I don’t have to prove to anyone anything,” she said. “A lot of time it happens that you’re making a comeback in the World Cup and you want to prove a lot or this or that. I’ve done that in the past and it won’t work for me. So I was like ‘I don’t have to prove to anyone anything’, I’ve done well and that’s why I’m here, I’ve performed and that’s why I’m back in the team. So I was very confident with that and when I was batting out there I just thought of how I could help India to win.”Missing injured opener Smriti Mandhana, India slipped to 65 for 2 then lost captain Harmanpreet Kaur for just 16. But Ghosh, who was part of India’s Under-19 team which delivered the country’s first World Cup in Women’s cricket, struck a composed 31 not out off 20 balls to help Rodrigues deliver the win.India are intent on translating the success of their teenagers into a senior title having finished runners-up to Australia in the T20 final three years ago and, more recently, at the Commonwealth Games where they lost by just nine runs. In the latter, Rodrigues shared a 96-run stand with Harmanpreet to put India within reach of the gold medal and she indicated there was a sense of unfinished business about this side.”It’s never a closed chapter,” she said. “The Commonwealth was still very fresh… we had a good partnership but I lost my wicket at a very wrong time. That still haunts me. I believe it still haunts our team because for our bowling attack to restrict that team to 165 (161 for 8) on that day against a full-blooded Australian side, I think credit goes to them.”It’s all learning. If not now, but it’s surely and definitely going to happen in the future and we are prepared for that. Maybe that’s what’s going to prepare our team for something bigger and greater that’s in store for us in the future.”

Varun and Suyash wreck RCB's chase again

KKR’s new opener Jason Roy set them up for a total of 200 by smashing 56 off 29 balls

Dasgupta: You need guts to bowl in the situation that Suyash did

It took Kolkata Knight Riders eight games to finally produce a cohesive team performance. They excelled with bat and ball, and were the better team in the field too, as they achieved only their third win of the season. It was the perfect way for them to start the second half of the league stage, beating Royal Challengers Bangalore for the second time in the season.KKR’s win was set up by their new opener Jason Roy, who laid the base for their total of 200 by smacking 56 off 29 balls. Nitish Rana pumped 48 off 21 to keep the momentum going through the middle overs, and Rinku Singh (18 off 10) and David Wiese (12 off 3) put on the finishing touches.RCB’s chase, though, was on while Virat Kohli was out there. He scored 54 off 37 to keep them on course. However, regular wickets from Suyash Sharma, Varun Chakravarthy and Andre Russell kept pegging them back, and RCB eventually ran out of gas and fell 21 short.Suyash, Varun pull it back for KKRKohli and Faf du Plessis hammered 30 runs in two overs from Vaibhav Arora and Umesh Yadav to start the chase, forcing Rana to bring on spin in the third over. He chose to go to his least experienced spinner – Suyash Sharma – ahead of Sunil Narine and Varun, and was rewarded with du Plessis holing out to long on second ball. While Kohli kept finding the boundary, he failed to find support in the powerplay with Shahbaz Ahmed falling lbw to Suyash, while Glenn Maxwell holed out off Varun. With RCB three down in the powerplay, Kohli and Mahipal Lomror stabilised the chase by running hard and taking on Sunil Narine.Jason Roy gave KKR a fabulous start•Associated Press

Rana then went back to Varun, who had Lomror caught in the deep, and when Kohli was superbly caught on 54 by Venkatesh Iyer, diving to his left at deep midwicket in the 13th over, KKR were decidedly ahead in the contest. The dismissals of Wanindu Hasaranga and Dinesh Karthik in the space of four balls ensured RCB had no way back and Kohli, who was standing in as captain for du Plessis once again, said they had “gifted” the victory to KKR.Rana makes RCB payKohli’s scathing post-game comments were largely because of RCB’s fielding. They put down a tough caught-and-bowled chance off Roy, but it was the two reprieves that Rana received that really cost RCB. According to ESPNcricinfo’s Luck Index the two drops, by Mohammed Siraj in the 13th over and Harshal Patel in the 15th, cost RCB a total of 29 runs.Roy fined for breaching Code of Conduct

KKR opening batter Jason Roy has been fined 10 percent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct. It appeared that he hit the bails with his bat after he was dismissed by Vijaykumar Vyshak. He admitted to the Level 1 offence, where the Match Referee’s decision is final.

The first chance came when Rana was on 5 off 5 deliveries and then second when he was on 19 off 12. He ended up scoring 48 off 21 balls. Rana’s innings included three fours and four sixes and it allowed KKR to wrest the momentum after sluggish innings from N Jagadeesan and Venkatesh.Roy sets Knight Riders upIt was Roy’s innings, however, that set the tone for KKR’s night. After struggling for runs from their opening partnership all season, KKR finally had a strong start and it was all Roy. He smashed four sixes in the fifth over from left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed to power them to 66 for 0 in the powerplay. So even though Vijaykumar Vyshak dismissed N Jagadeesan and Roy in the same over, KKR had a platform to build on, and this time Rana and the rest ensured that it was not wasted.

Forget about Isak: Liverpool lining up "one of the best CFs in the world"

Liverpool’s hopes of securing a domestic trophy to go along with what they hope will be a Premier League title were dashed when they were beaten 2-1 by Newcastle United at Wembley last weekend.

The Reds were beaten by goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak in the capital, in the same week that they were also dumped out of the Champions League on penalties by Paris Saint-Germain.

Isak scored what turned out to be the winning goal at Wembley when he reacted to Jacob Murphy’s header to sweep the ball past Caoimhin Kelleher with a ruthless finish into the bottom corner on the half-volley.

It was a lethal strike from the Sweden international who showcased his quality in the final third, whilst Liverpool’s number nine – Diogo Jota – struggled.

The Portugal international failed to find the target with his only effort on goal and only completed 40% of his attempted passes in the match, as he struggled to have a positive impact on the match.

Their contrasting performances on the big stage on Sunday may explain why the Reds have been linked with an interest in signing Isak from the Magpies.

Liverpool's reported interest in Alexander Isak

The Merseyside giants are reportedly keen on a swoop to land the former Borussia Dortmund marksman in the upcoming summer transfer window to bolster their options at the top end of the pitch.

Speaking on his YouTube channel earlier this week, Fabrizio Romano said: “Liverpool are also there for Alexander Isak, they already made some contacts with people close to the player, so both clubs are interested in Alexander Isak.

Alexander Isak in action for Newcastle

“For Arsenal, he is the absolute top target. For Liverpool, he’s one of names they are considering in that position.”

Liverpool just experienced first-hand the kind of quality that Isak could provide Arne Slot’s side, which may be why they are looking to rival the Gunners to his signature.

However, The Telegraph reported, back in December, that the Magpies are poised to demand a fee of more than £150m for the centre-forward, and that would make him a club-record signing for the Reds.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Liverpool could avoid splashing out more than £150m and smashing their club-record transfer fee to land a new number nine, though, as they are said to be keen on a bargain alternative to Isak.

Liverpool showing interest in Ligue 1 centre-forward

According to CaughtOffside, the Premier League leaders are one of a number of clubs interested in a deal to sign Lille centre-forward Jonathan David in the summer transfer window.

The report claims that Liverpool are ‘considering’ a swoop to bring the Canada international over to England ahead of the 2025/26 campaign, as he is due to be a free agent this summer.

Lille'sJonathanDavidcelebrates scoring their fourth goal

David’s current contract with the Ligue 1 side expires at the end of this season and he will be free to negotiate with other clubs at the end of June, which is an opportunity that has attracted interest from plenty of sides.

CaughtOffside adds that Manchester United, Chelsea, Tottenham, Barcelona, Juventus, Inter Milan, and Paris Saint-Germain are also considering moves for his services, which shows that Liverpool are facing serious competition from massive clubs in England and abroad.

David, who scored against Liverpool at Anfield earlier this season, has also attracted interest from Premier League sides Arsenal and West Ham United, the latter of whom invited the centre-forward’s agent to watch one of their matches.

Michael Edwards must, now, push to win the race for his signature in the summer transfer window because the Lille marksman could arrive at Anfield as a bargain alternative to Isak, given that he will be a free agent in the summer instead of a signing in excess of £150m.

Why Liverpool should sign Jonathan David

Aside from the fact that he will not a penny in transfer fees, there are several reasons why signing David would make a lot of sense for the Reds.

The Canadian marksman only turned 25 in January and this means that Liverpool would be bringing in a striker who is heading towards the prime years of his career, with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and improve.

That is particularly exciting when you consider that he has already scored 19 goals or more in each of the last four seasons for Lille in all competitions – including an eye-catching nine goals in 14 matches in the Champions League this term.

The Ligue 1 superstar was once described as “one of the best strikers in the world” by podcaster Tony Marinaro, which is hard to argue when you take his consistent run of goals over the last four years and his form in Europe’s biggest club competition this season into account.

David has proven himself to be a reliable performer at the top end of the pitch for the French side for several seasons, which shows that his current form is far from a flash in the pan and, instead, is something that suggests he could be a fantastic addition for Slot.

When you compare his performances for Lille since the start of last season with Isak’s for Newcastle, signing the 25-year-old on a free transfer seems like a dream scenario for Liverpool.

As you can see in the table above, they boast similar records in their respective leagues, as both scorers and creators of goals, as they are both ruthless finishers who can also create for their teammates.

These statistics show that David is a clinical finisher who can make the most of the opportunities that are created for him, as he has outperformed his xG by almost two goals.

Lille'sJonathanDavidcelebrates scoring their first goal with Edon Zhegrov

Meanwhile, Jota – who started up front in the League Cup final – has scored five goals from 7.21 xG across 18 appearances in the Premier League this season, which suggests that he has been an unreliable presence for the Reds in the centre-forward position.

Therefore, David could be the perfect signing for Liverpool to come in and make the most of the high-quality opportunities that have been wasted by the Portuguese international.

He would also be a bargain alternative to Isak because he can offer a similar level of quality in the final third, as shown by his aforementioned statistics for Lille, without the more than £150m price tag to go alongside him.

That is why Edwards must do everything in his power to convince David to make the move to Anfield over any of the other reported clubs that are eyeing him up this summer.

Real Madrid eye bid to sign Man Utd star as INEOS in line for £30m+ profit

Manchester United have entered a new dawn under Ruben Amorim, though he may have a decision to make on one of his key stars at Old Trafford this summer.

Man Utd look to make a mark in the summer window

The Red Devils will have one eye on the summer window and reinforcements are likely. However, they risk missing out on continental qualification unless Amorim can lead his side through the Champions League back door by winning the Europa League.

Regardless, Manchester United are in the market and Morten Hjulmand is on their list amid speculation that he could be attainable at around £50 million this summer.

On the same token, Club Brugge midfielder Ardon Jashari is another target for the Red Devils and is rated at £29 million by his current employers.

Stereotypically, Manchester United wouldn’t have had problems in shelling out such fees in the past. Now, Financial Fair Play regulations and their collective belt-tightening under INEOS mean that any available funds must be spent wisely.

Inevitably, moving spare parts on appears to be the most logical route to long-term sustainability, even if wage demands complicate proceedings in the window.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made clear that tough decisions will be made by INEOS and his strategy to restore the Red Devils at the top of the English footballing pyramid hasn’t won universal acclaim.

Tapping into that theme, Manchester United now have a dilemma regarding a star who is being targeted by one of the world’s biggest clubs before the upcoming window.

Real Madrid line up £90m offer to sign Man Utd star Bruno Fernandes

According to The Daily Star, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is wanted by Real Madrid in a £90 million deal following an extensive scouting operation from the global giants over the past few months.

Loved by Amorim due to his clutch contributions, the Portugal international isn’t someone the Red Devils want to depart, but they may have to consider a sizeable offer once the summer comes around as part of their cost-cutting operation.

Labelled a “perfect captain” by the Manchester United boss, Fernandes was brought to England for £54.3 million, creating scope for INEOS to inherit over £30 million in profit should they opt to cash in on the midfielder.

From a sporting standpoint, the 30-year-old’s return of 16 goals and 16 assists in 44 appearances wouldn’t be worth losing for any price. Still, the need for funds to spend elsewhere could be a valid counterargument, especially factoring in his age.

While it would make more sense to try and offload other figures that don’t hold the same influence as Fernandes, it will be interesting to see if push comes to shove should Real Madrid indeed submit an offer.
