PCB to deny NOC to Pakistani players for BBL, no clarity on new ILT20 or CSA league

There is growing frustration among the top players in the country, who feel they are missing out on big money

Umar Farooq02-Aug-2022

With the addition of the ILT20 and the CSA’s new league, the demand for Pakistani players is likely to be higher than before•PCB

The PCB is refusing to provide no-objection certificates (NOCs) to Pakistani players – contracted or not contracted – who want to participate in the upcoming BBL season. The board has also not clarified whether it will allow players to take part in the ILT20 in the UAE early next year. The reason for the stance, it is believed, is the packed calendar – domestic and international. But it’s unclear why players with no contracts at the national or the domestic levels are being barred.Though there were no Pakistanis in the list of 98 overseas players who nominated themselves for the BBL draft, many were expected to put themselves up within the deadline. And though no names have been announced as having signed up for the ILT20, speculation has been rife about a number of top Pakistan names being offered contracts there.Related

PCB announces domestic schedule of 187 matches

Asia Cup: India vs Pakistan on August 28

There is history here, including a near-strike in November 2019. The PCB had, for some time, been operating an informal “PSL plus one” policy as a framework for their players’ participation in overseas leagues. But it is not clear if that is still the case under the administration of chairman Ramiz Raja. With the addition of the ILT20 and the CSA’s new league, the demand for Pakistani players is likely to be higher than before. But, currently, even putting one’s name down in a draft requires permission from the PCB, forget getting an NOC to play.As a result, there is a growing sense of frustration among the top players in Pakistan, who feel they are missing out on big monetary gains – they are effectively barred from playing in the IPL. There was a suggestion at one stage that the PCB might compensate players for not playing in other leagues, but the high value of contracts on offer in those leagues – upwards of US$ 400,000 in the ILT20 – has since seen the PCB go silent on their offer.Contributing to the mess is the upcoming issue of player central contracts, though the matters are not directly connected. The PCB announced it was offering 33 contracts split between white- and red-ball players for 2022-23. Players have asked the board for copies of the contracts in order to first run them past a set of legal eyes before they decide on signing. That is standard practice in most countries, but it has not been the case in Pakistan, where players are used to being given their central contracts – usually just ahead of a tour, or during a pre-tour camp – and told to sign and return them almost immediately. Often, these contracts go up to 150 pages. With the current administration, even putting one’s name down in a draft requires permission, forget getting an NOC to play•PCB

Historically, the PCB hasn’t formally negotiated with players on contacts, and players have rarely disputed any clauses, beyond ensuring satisfactory annual pay rises. But the current crop of players, are increasingly aware of their commercial value and how that should be represented in a contract. As one recent example, a player was told he could not sign an individual deal with a company that was in the same industry as one of the PCB’s associate [not title] sponsors. While clauses exist in the contract that bar players from signing deals that clash with Pakistan’s principle sponsorships – for example, an individual deal signed with a company that is in direct competition with Pepsi, PCB’s title sponsors – the policy isn’t clear about smaller sponsorships.Currently, there is no evidence that players may use not signing the contracts as a bargaining chip to force the PCB to step back on the NOCs issue, but the matter has the potential to flare up.As it was in November 2019, the absence of a players’ association in Pakistan is the elephant in the room, in negotiating central contracts and looking after player welfare, as well as putting in place broader policies that might act as a framework for such situations. Generally, player agents have played a role but the PCB refuses to deal with them over contracts. There have been several attempts in the past to form a union, none successful. The PCB has been approached for comment.**

Carter, Orr provide key support as Worcestershire’s victory hopes are thwarted

Sussex 220 and 312 for 6 (Alsop 137*, Carter 55) drew with Worcestershire 438 for 5 (Libby 215) Sussex’s Tom Alsop led the resistance with an unbeaten century as Worcestershire’s promotion hopes in the LV= Insurance County Championship suffered a potentially fatal setback.Alsop’s 137 not out – his fourth Championship hundred of the season – and valuable contributions from Oli Carter (55), Ali Orr (48) and Tom Clark (36) took Sussex to 312 for six, a lead of 92, when the players shook hands with 13 overs remaining at the 1st Central County Ground.Worcestershire picked up 14 points but they are 28 points behind second-placed Middlesex with two games to play and will almost certainly be in the second division again next season. Sussex remain seventh and have little prospect of improving on that position with two matches to go.The visitors were ultimately left to rue the loss of 84 overs to the weather. There were a couple of moments on the final day when they sensed an opportunity but Alsop held things together impressively for the hosts. The wicket at Hove didn’t really deteriorate but Sussex were still 130 runs in arrears when they lost opener Orr, leg before when Ben Gibbon found some late inswing.Alsop had come to the crease in the sixth over of the day after nightwatchman Brad Currie had two stumps knocked over by Josh Tongue’s inswinger. It was hard work at first but gradually Alsop, fluent as always on the leg side, and Clark began to find some rhythm as the ball softened.Clark went down the wicket to hoist Brett D’Oliveira for a straight six but in the next over he was brilliantly caught down the leg side by the diving Gareth Roderick off the persevering Dillon Pennington after adding 83 in 27 overs with Alsop.Worcestershire sensed their chance but Carter proved an excellent foil for Alsop in a fifth wicket stand of 110 in 30 overs.Alsop went to his century with a clip to the mid-wicket boundary off Tongue but two wickets in five balls after tea, when they took the new ball, gave Worcestershire renewed hope.Carter, who hit nine fours as he passed fifty for the sixth time this season, was beaten by a fine delivery from Pennington which trimmed the bails. Then in the next over Joe Leach bowled Fynn Hudson-Prentice with one which kept low. Sussex’s lead was just 64 at that stage and their lengthy tail was exposed. But Alsop stood firm and James Coles belied his inexperience to offer solid support at the other end as they put on 30 runs before the players shook hands. Alsop’s innings spanned 228 balls and contained 18 fours and he departed to a standing ovation.

He’d make Ndiaye unplayable: Everton hold talks to sign "electric" £25m ace

In the bygone Farhad Moshiri era, Everton might have kicked the can down the road and waited until summer to address squad concerns after constructing a three-match Premier League winning streak.

But The Friedkin Group want to strengthen. It’s deadline day; roll up. With David Moyes at the helm and flying, Goodison Park’s relegation fears have been mollified, but there’s plenty of work to do over the months ahead.

And that starts now. The window is open, and TFG are pursuing several deals. Centre-forward might feel like the biggest concern, but Everton’s right wing is rather uninspiring and there’s a man who may yet make the move before the market’s closure.

Everton eyeing deadline day deal

According to The Liverpool Echo, Everton have been tracking Ernest Nuamah this month and have even held talks for the Lyon winger.

Olympique Lyonnais'ErnestNuamahduring the match

Nuamah was on the club’s radar last summer but opted against moving to England, flat-out rejecting Fulham, but may now cross the Channel after a middling return with the struggling French side in 2024/25.

Valued at roughly £25m by the Ligue 1 club, Everton would need to fork out a significant sum, but with the idea of something more having taken root, TFG know that they need to act today.

What Ernest Nuamah would bring to Everton

Nuamah usually plays off the right touchline, bringing an energetic bite that could help Everton’s offensive fluency to no end. He’s been described as an “explosive, physical winger” and a “relentless threat” by analyst Ben Mattinson – who also noted his “electric pace”.

Olympique Lyonnais' ErnestNuamahin action with Eintracht Frankfurt's Tuta

With 51 appearances to his name at Lyon, the 21-year-old has been building himself up, albeit lacking in the finishing department with just five goals.

However, he offers an electric and dynamic skill set that is perfectly illustrated through his ranking among the top 15% of wingers and attacking midfielders in the Europa League this term for both shot-creating actions and progressive carries, also among the top 20% for tackles per 90, as per FBref.

Everton have demonstrated long-lost attacking qualities in recent weeks and this could be the dream locality for a young buck to foster their talent. Iliman Ndiaye, for example, is thriving as the energy source of Everton’s frontline, so skilful and determined on the left.

The frustration at present is that Everton’s wide threat is imbalanced, with Ndiaye doing most of the work. Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom have shared a whopping total of zero goal contributions between them in the Premier League this season, across 38 combined appearances.

Grim reading. It’s clear that Everton need a new centre-forward following the latest injury to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, though Beto’s brace against Leicester City in midweek has eased the urgency a tad.

Would it not be more fruitful to equilibrise the wide threat, allowing fan favourite Ndiaye to continue his sparkling start to life on Merseyside while providing an equally electric partner to advance the overall fluency of Moyes’ side?

Having been unshackled from the confines of Dyche’s excitement-devoid system, the Toffees have started to take flight and show the Premier League what they’re capable of.

Olympique Lyonnais' ErnestNuamahin action

However, stagnation or maybe regression is a real possibility should action not be taken before the shutters close. Everton need to act, and Nuamah would be the perfect signing to clear from the relegation zone and maybe even press against the higher powers at the start of an exciting new era.

Chelsea convinced "£80m-plus" England star will join them this year

Chelsea chiefs hold a very serious belief that one Premier League star will choose to make a Stamford Bridge move this year, and it is believed they held some talks with his representatives in the January transfer window.

Chelsea prepare for Brighton in first game post-transfer window

The west Londoners travel down south for a looming FA Cup fourth-round clash away to Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Saturday, with Enzo Maresca looking to maintain Chelsea’s solid start to 2025.

The clash represents a good opportunity for Maresca to hand minutes to fringe players, with Chelsea wantaway Christopher Nkunku potentially in line to feature against Brighton after playing half an hour against West Ham on deadline day.

However, the same cannot be said for injured starlet Roméo Lavia, who still has a “long way to go” before he’s back on the field, according to Maresca.

Chelsea’s face-off with Fabian Hurzeler’s side may even give Mathis Amougou a chance to make his full debut for the west Londoners, after he arrived in a £12 million deal from Saint-Étienne on the winter transfer window’s final day.

The 19-year-old, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, will be used as a senior player this season before heading out on loan to Strasbourg for the 2025/2026 season.

Amougou joins Trevoh Chalobah as two of Chelsea’s only January arrivals. The club activated their re-call clause for the latter player, who returns to Stamford Bridge to bolster Maresca’s centre-back options.

Chelsea ultimately decided to bring Chalobah back instead of making a mid-season move for his Crystal Palace teammate, Marc Guehi.

Chelsea convinced Marc Guehi will choose to join them this summer

Maresca’s side were widely rumoured to hold a serious interest in the centre-back, who was subject to a last-gasp £70 million bid from Tottenham.

Spurs ultimately fell short in their pursuit of the England international who starred at Euro 2024, with some reports stating that Guehi actually commands a price tag of “£80 million-plus”.

Now, according to GiveMeSport, Chelsea are convinced that Guehi will choose to join them over Tottenham this summer, after tentatively reaching out to his representatives during the winter transfer window.

The 24-year-old’s price tag may well come down by the end of the season, given he’ll be entering the final year of his Selhurst Park contract. A swoop for the former Chelsea gem would boost Maresca’s defensive options to no end, with some even calling Guehi the Premier League’s “most underrated” player.

O jogo será disputado naRessacada, casa do Avaí.

England captain Jos Buttler said he might have considered appealing against Matthew Wade obstructing the field in a higher-stakes contest in the aftermath of his side’s thrilling eight-run victory over Australia in Perth. The series opener, in what is effectively a warm-up ahead of the T20 World Cup, was delicately poised with Australia at 170 for 5 and needing 39 off 23 balls when Wade top-edged a fierce short delivery from speedster Mark Wood into his helmet that then ballooned into the air.Wood ran towards the batter’s end in a desperate effort to take the return catch but was blocked by a seemingly shaken Wade, who then impeded the quick by sticking his arm out as he tried to get back into his ground.Related

Buttler was asked by the on-field umpires whether he wanted to appeal, but declined as Wade survived and needed his helmet replaced. There was widespread confusion for players and the 25,000 Optus Stadium crowd, but the incident was somewhat dampened by Buttler’s non-appeal in England’s first hit out on Australian soil as the T20 World Cup looms.”Maybe,” said Buttler in his post match press conference when asked if he would have appealed for obstructing the field if it was a T20 World Cup match. “They asked if I wanted to appeal and I said ‘no’. I’ve only just got to Australia so I thought just carry on with the game.”Buttler said he “didn’t really see what happened” because he was watching the ball closely.”It was hard because I didn’t know what I was appealing for,” he said. “I could have asked some of the other boys to see if they had a better view but thought I would get on with the game.”Maybe I should have asked a few of the lads.”Wade, last year’s T20 World Cup hero for his ability at finishing an innings, threatened to get Australia over the line after surviving the incident but holed out in the final over as the home side fell short in the first men’s international match in Perth in almost three years. It was Wade’s first dismissal in a chase since August 2021 – also the last time Australia lost when batting second in T20Is.”When you’ve been hit in the head and you’re running around and don’t know where the ball is… it’s chaos,” Australia allrounder Marcus Stoinis told reporters.Buttler paid tribute to Wood, who claimed the key wicket of David Warner for 73 just three balls after the Wade controversy and finished with 3 for 34. “To come back, take those wickets, bowl fast and intimidate the guys which he can do with that pace… he’s got great character too,” Buttler said.

+John Textor valoriza vitória do Botafogo: ‘Muito orgulhoso’
