£70k-p/w Crystal Palace star ruled out of Forest but return date now set

Desperately looking to turn their form around following a disastrous start to their Premier League campaign, Crystal Palace could be boosted by the return of a player who’s been sidelined for the last four games.

Crystal Palace injury news

Although injuries to the likes of Trevoh Chalobah and Adam Wharton have far from helped their cause, plenty of other factors have been at play in Palace’s incredibly disappointing start to the season. Currently sat in the Premier League’s bottom three, the Eagles have been a shadow of the side that defeated Liverpool at Anfield during the early months of Oliver Glasner’s tenure.

The Eagles recently came full circle on that front just before the international break, when the Reds reversed their fortunes to pick up a narrow 1-0 victory and compound Palace’s misery just seven games into the season.

Truth be told, the international break came at the perfect time for Glasner and his side, who will likely be boosted by one returning player, albeit not until after their return to Premier League action on Monday night.

As reported by LondonWorld, Cheick Doucoure is set to return to Crystal Palace training and will be in line to return after the Nottingham Forest clash – by which time, he will have missed five matches for the Eagles.

In search of their first league win of the season, the return of the defensive midfielder should at least help to solve Glasner’s leaky defence in the coming weeks.

Cheick Doucoure

Glasner revealed the news, saying via the official Crystal Palace website: “No new injuries, so that’s a positive thing. They all came back from their national teams in good shape.

“But also no new injured players are coming back, so we have the same squad [as against Liverpool]. It looks like Cheick Doucouré will train with us after the Nottingham [Forest] game – at least parts of the training sessions – so he’s maybe the guy who is closest to returning.”

"Quick" Doucoure could spark turnaround

Sealing victory against Nottingham Forest on Monday and welcoming back Doucoure would have Palace’s week off to the perfect start. The defensive midfielder will be desperate to finally put his injury struggles behind him, having also missed the majority of the last campaign before struggling so far this season.

Palace will certainly share that sentiment given how fragile they’ve looked at the heart of their midfield without their £70,000-a-week star, who U23 scout Antonio Mango previously dubbed “quick” and “strong”.

Next to Wharton, Doucoure may even help to take those at Selhurst Park back to the type of form they initially showed under Glasner. As things stand, of course, the Eagles are heading down a dangerous and unexpected path towards Premier League relegation. Despite having plenty of time to turn things around, Palace must get back to winning ways as soon as possible.

– Existem avaliações e hierarquias no clube.

Peirson century and Steketee 10-wicket haul in vain as South Australia hold out

Half-centuries from Jake Carder and Alex Carey ensured South Australia survived

Jimmy Peirson produced his second century of the season and Mark Steketee claimed a career-best 10-wicket haul but Queensland fell four wickets short of a stunning come-from-behind victory at Adelaide Oval as South Australia held on in an enthralling draw.Jake Carder and Alex Carey produced fighting half-centuries, with Carey finishing 66 not out to hold off a desperate Bulls’ attack late on the final day.Queensland made a bold declaration after Peirson dashed to his second century of the season and his third in the past 12 months. He has made three centuries and four half-centuries in his last 12 Sheffield Shield innings, and averaged 59.63, to add his name to the list of wicketkeeper-batter candidates to replace Tim Paine in the Test side whenever the Australia captain retires.Peirson and Usman Khawaja continued their fine partnership sharing a 195-run stand. Both men played with aggression on the final morning to set up the declaration. Khawaja fell for 174 to a fine catch at midwicket while Peirson raced to 132 before holing out at deep midwicket with the lead at 323. Khawaja immediately declared giving South Australia two-and-a-half sessions and more than 80 overs to chase the target. The hosts lost Henry Hunt early with Carder and Nathan McSweeney put under extreme pressure as Steketee and Jack Wildermuth gave away just 10 runs in the first 10 overs. But the pair found their groove and put together an 88-run stand to give South Australia a platform with plenty of time remaining. However, McSweeney was incorrectly adjudged lbw off an inside edge on 32, giving Steketee his ninth wicket of the match. Carder pushed on, taking a liking to Queensland’s two spinners. He moved to 79 before making a mistake, spooning a return catch to Matt Kuhnemann. That brought Travis Head and Alex Carey together with 194 to win and more than 50 overs remaining. But Steketee snuffed out nearly all of South Australia’s hopes when he removed Head for the second time in the match to secure his first career 10-wicket haul. Head was caught at midwicket chipping a length ball off his pads.Carey kept the runs flowing but when Harry Neilsen holed at deep square for 13, South Australia shut up shop. Nathan McAndrew faced 30 balls before scoring and chewed up 66 in total to get to the second new ball. Queensland were frustrated by the pair and the umpires making several frivolous appeals an over, with Marnus Labuschagne particularly exasperated that none of the appeals off his bowling were upheld.Wildermuth knocked over McAndrew with a peach in his first over with the second new ball, but Carey and Daniel Worrall held out as shadows lengthened across the ground in 89th over of the innings.

Major Adam Wharton injury update provided before Wolves vs Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace have been handed a raft of injury blows ahead of their clash with Wolves as they look for just their second win of the Premier League season, it has emerged.

Crystal Palace win in midweek but at huge cost

Oliver Glasner’s side claimed a surprise 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the Carabao Cup, setting up a quarter-final tie with Arsenal in the process. Goals from Eberechi Eze and Daichi Kamada proved too much for Unai Emery’s side as the Eagles marched into the last eight of the competition on the hunt for the first mjor trophy in their history.

However, the win came at a cost. Eze was forced off with an injury just minutes after opening the scoring, before England teammate Adam Wharton was also forced out of action before the half hour mark, handing Glasner further injury woes.

Their exits added to a casualty list that already sees Jefferson Lerma, Chris Richards, Chadi Riad and Matheus Franca sidelined, but after the game Glasner tried to be positive.

“Adam is a more positive one because it is nothing new. We spoke about it many times; he has had groin problems for many months. We thought he needed a break today, but he gave the thumbs up and said he was fine. But the pain got worse during the game, so we had to make a second sub. Especially with the circumstances, I am very proud of the performance.”

However, the latest update is less than ideal for the Eagles.

Palace midfielder set for surgery

That comes as Glasner faced the media ahead of his side’s trip to Molineux to face winless Wolves, and had some bad news on the injury front. Firstly, he ruled Eze, Lerma, Riad, Richards and Franca all out of games until after the upcoming international break, but the worst news came regarding Wharton.

The midfielder, who has been managing an injury all season, is now set for surgery and at least a month on the sidelines, Glasner confirmed, meaning that he will miss at least five games of Premier League action.

‘We took the final decision: he will have surgery, so he won’t be available for Wolves. He tried [to train] today, but there’s too much pain, and it makes no sense. He’s really struggled the last weeks and months, and so now we took the decision he will have surgery, and we hope to have him back after, let’s say, four weeks.’

The news will come as a blow to Palace, who had just begun to show shoots of improvement following a tragic start to the campaign as new signings tried to acclimatise to life at Selhurst Park, but with the 20-year-old and Glasner having both known about and managing the injury since the summer, they will be hoping that the surgery will mark the end of his issues.

Meanwhile, the damage of Wharton’s absence will be mitigated by the return of Cheick Doucoure, who will be part of a matchday squad for the first time this season when Palace take on Wolves this weekend, the Palace boss confirmed.

Nathan Ellis' rise to Australia still sinking in: 'Doesn't feel real to be honest'

The Hobart Hurricanes quick is now looking ahead to the prospect of a home World Cup

It’s been a whirlwind few months for Nathan Ellis and he is still trying to take it all in. A late call-up to Australia’s tours of the Caribbean and Bangladesh culminated in a debut hat-trick, then came a stint with Punjab Kings in the IPL this season and a spot as a travelling reserve for the T20 World Cup.He will shortly start another BBL season with Hobart Hurricanes – the competition that has helped make his name – and he admitted it feels different to now have an “Australia cricketer” among his credentials.”Even just hearing you say that it doesn’t sound like it’s right, doesn’t feel real, to be honest,” Ellis told ESPNcricinfo. “It was a dream come true…to hear you say Australian cricketer it’s a really proud thing.”I didn’t expect to be on the Caribbean and Bangladesh tours. Then, to get a game at the back end and have the luck I did, I was really content and stoked with that. But then to get the call-up to the World Cup was a dream, rubbing shoulders with the biggest stars we have in the Australian cricket set-up, going onto win it, it’s an experience I’ll never forget.”Related

The actual volume of cricket Ellis has played during that period has been limited: two matches in Bangladesh and three games for Kings in the IPL. But he believes he has put his time to good use and, having initially begun by focusing on the death bowling he is most renowned for, has worked to widen his game.”Would be remiss of me not to talk to all the players and get as much out of it as I can. I feel like I’ve done that. I haven’t played that much cricket, but just the experiences in the nets and talking to those guys, and even watching them in tough situations, I feel like it can only do me good.”Initially, I tried to hone those skills and grow that death bowling skillset, but I’ve also done a lot of new-ball bowling in the powerplay, and as a T20 bowler, you need to keep trying to evolve. My role is the tough overs, so I tried to bowl a lot with the new ball.”Having a ringside seat at one World Cup triumph, Ellis now has sights set on remaining in the T20 set-up with an eye on next year’s home tournament. While for now, the shortest format appears the likeliest route to higher honours his domestic numbers – a first-class average of 25.11 and one-day average of 23.75 – suggest he has the potential to expand.”In the short term, we’ve just had a T20 World Cup, and we have another one next year, then a one-day World Cup following that, so there’s a lot of white-ball cricket coming up,” he said. “Naturally, I’d love to play for Australia in all formats, but at the moment, my opportunity is in the T20 set-up, so I’ll do everything I can to stay in the mix.”Winning this World Cup was amazing, but the possibility of going back-to-back in front of home fans is mouthwatering.”

Emery can drop Buendia by unleashing Villa gem who "creates problems"

Aston Villa suffered defeat to Crystal Palace in midweek, being knocked out of the League Cup in the process.

For Unai Emery, it could be a blessing in disguise, especially with more Premier League and Champions League ties to come between now and Christmas.

Nevertheless, he will still be disappointed that they have missed a chance to end their major trophy drought, especially with Manchester City also being knocked out of the competition.

Emery will be looking ahead to the tie against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday as a chance to secure a firm grip on the fourth spot in the league table. There may be a few changes made, as some players failed to perform well against the Eagles.

Emiliano Buendia should be dropped for Villa

The Argentinian midfielder was making just his second start for the club since returning from a cruciate ligament injury that ruled him out for the entirety of the 2023/24 campaign.

Deployed in the number ten role by the Spaniard, Buendia was given a rare chance to shine against Palace, but he failed to really showcase his abilities.

He did make one key pass and had a shot on target, yet the former Norwich City gem could only succeed with one of his three dribble attempts, lost possession 11 times, and won just two of his 13 ground duels during his 78 minutes on the field.

Of course, it will take time for him to get back to full match fitness, but this was a disappointing showing in a game where he could have laid down a marker for Emery.

Against Spurs, the manager will likely switch things up and this could see Morgan Rogers come back into the starting XI.

Morgan Rogers will be unleashed by Emery

The youngster has been in fine form for Villa this term. In the top flight, he has scored twice, grabbed two assists, created four big chances, and averaged 1.3 key passes per game.

These statistics show that the Englishman has cemented his place as the main attacking midfielder in Emery’s tactical system this term, given his ability to make things happen in the final third.

Former striker Tony Cascarino lavished praise on the player in September, saying: “He reminds me a little bit of Jamal Musiala. He’s that guy that picks up the ball and he’ll just make runs and he’ll create problems for others.

“He’s got a lot about him. Comparing him to Musiala, well that type of player, that’s a really big praise because Musiala’s a real talent. But I do see something in Morgan Rogers where he’s got that ability.”

High praise indeed and if Villa aim to secure yet another win, Rogers must start against Spurs on Sunday afternoon.

He is hitting his best form at exactly the right time and there is no doubt Rogers has a bright future in the game ahead if he maintains his current level of performance. That’s a certainty.

Therefore, Emery must ruthlessly ditch Buendia from the starting XI, after his struggles last time out, and bring the England U21 international back into the starting XI, as the Argentine whiz failed to take his chance to impress in the cup.

Not removing Paine in 2018 'clearly sent the wrong message', says CA board chairman

CA chief executive Hockley says he was aware of the case but found out details only last week

Andrew McGlashan20-Nov-2021The current Cricket Australia board would not have endorsed Tim Paine as Test captain if the information around his explicit text messages to a female colleague in 2018 had been available, the chairman of the body has said.Paine resigned on Friday when details of the code of conduct case, which cleared him of wrongdoing, was made public. There has been considerable turnaround in the board and executive of CA since that time, with neither current chairman Richard Freudenstein or chief executive Nick Hockley with the organisation three years ago – although an overlap remains.Related

The twists and turns of Paine's international career

“While I cannot speak about the original decision-making in 2018, what I can say is that faced with the same circumstances and with the benefit of all the relevant information about this matter, Cricket Australia would not make the same decisions today,” Freudenstein said in a statement at the beginning of a press conference on Saturday.”I acknowledge the decision clearly sent the wrong message to the sport, to the community and to Tim that this kind of behaviour is acceptable and without serious consequences. The role of the Australian cricket captain must be held to the highest possible standards.”He said he had been told about the closed case when he came onto the board two years ago, while Hockley confirmed he was aware of its existence although only delved into it deeply last week when it became clear the story was going public. Paine was listed as captain when Australia’s Ashes squad was announced on Wednesday morning.”Faced with the same circumstances and with the benefit of all the relevant information about this matter, Cricket Australia would not make the same decisions today”•Getty Images

Freudenstein added that amendments to the code of conduct have been implemented over the last three years and that CA’s current policies were appropriate. “Think it’s important to note a lot of things have changed since that time, the player education, there’s a full programme addressing a whole range of things including texting which has been in place since 2018-19 and we’ve undertaken a full review of our anti-harassment and discrimination policies,” he said.Although having been made aware of the case, Freudenstein said he did not believe it warranted looking into again during the intervening time until forced to by it being made pubic. “You don’t go onto a board and ask to see every integrity decision that’s been closed over the previous years,” he said. “I was given a very high-level briefing that there had been an incident and a thorough investigation and no misconduct found. There would be no reason to investigate that further. It was something that had been put to bed.”He indicated that the board would undertake a review of past integrity findings while the credentials of Paine’s replacement, expected to be Pat Cummins, would be heavily scrutinised. “We may just need to look back…I’m very confident in the way integrity decisions are made. We’ll have a review over the past few years but I’m sure that will lead to no further changes.”Paine had been central to CA’s attempts to forge the men’s team in a new image after the ball-tampering scandal but despite the nature of his exit from the captaincy there is confidence that any gains won’t be undone.”The team over recent years has really prioritised team culture,” Hockley said. “Think we have made great strides. Certainly we are very clear on the vision for cricket to be the most inclusive sport with a culture of respect and its core. As Tim has said he’s owned that particular mistake. Going forward it’s incumbent on everybody to have the highest standards to represent Australia particularly on a leadership position.”Paine had been due to return to action following his neck surgery with a club game in Hobart on Saturday, but rain prevented any play. George Bailey, the national selector, was spotted at the ground but did not make any comment on the situation.Freudenstein reiterated that Paine remained available for selection for the Test side and that decision was now solely in the hands of the selectors. “The board of Australian cricket is comfortable he is available to play,” he said
