Liton Das carries on template of being Bangladesh's top-order anchor

“I batted like in a Test match for the first 20-25 overs. The situation wasn’t in our favour”

Bangladesh’s basic batting plan for the last six years, at least, has been to ask one of their top three batters to anchor the innings till the 40th over at a steady pace, by letting the batters at the other end bat around him. Tamim Iqbal has mastered this approach, particularly since 2015 when they had an upturn in this format. It is firmly believed that one of the reasons for their rise is this plan of the anchor’s role. Bangladesh don’t have big hitters in the lower order so they believe that they can get the best out of the death overs by having set batters at that time of the innings. After his 102 helped the visitors to a massive 155-run win over Zimbabwe in the first ODI in Harare, Liton Das said that he followed those orders to the tee. The blueprint helped the Bangladesh opener as he needed a big innings to return among runs after a poor recent patch in ODIs.Das saw Iqbal, Shakib Al Hasan, Mohammad Mithun and Mosaddek Hossain fall at the other end, but batted on till the 42nd over.Related

Shakib becomes Bangladesh's highest ODI wicket-taker

“The weather and their bowling made batting tough in the first 20 overs for us,” Das said. “I was under a bit of pressure as I haven’t scored runs in ODIs for a while. Wickets were falling at the other end too, so it was my responsibility to take my team to a good position. I batted like in a Test match for the first 20-25 overs. The situation wasn’t in our favour.”I realised that I can reach the next stage only with wickets in hand. Riyad (Mahmudullah) changed the momentum, plus when they brought on the spinners, it became easier to bat. During the team meeting, we discussed that one of the top five has to bat till the 40th over to take us to a big score. I kept that plan in mind, that I should bat at least 30 overs.”Das’ first boundary came in the 16th over, when he was on 16 off 36 balls, and he raised his strike rate once he reached the eighties in the 37th over. By the time he got out, Bangladesh were in a position for the lower order to get them to a 250-plus total. Afif Hossain and Mehidy Hasan Miraz cashed in on Das’ platform, scoring 58 off 42 balls in their seventh-wicket partnership. As much as Das’ innings was a comeback for him in ODIs, it was a continuation of his recent form after he made 95 in the one-off Test last week. Das said that he realised during that innings how to bat in the Zimbabwean conditions.”I missed the last ODI due to an injury. I only came back to play the last five matches in the DPL T20s to get back my batting rhythm,” he said. “When I got some runs in the Test match, I realised that one has to spend time at the crease here to get a big score.”Das said that his struggle for runs after cricket returned after a long gap during the pandemic was in stark contrast with how he felt before March last year. He was in prolific form then, having scored an unbeaten 126 and 176, the highest score by a Bangladeshi in ODIs, in a span of three innings against Zimbabwe in Sylhet.”I had good form before the pandemic, so if cricket continued normally I could have done well using that momentum,” Das said. “I had a lot in my mind when cricket resumed during the pandemic. I think that’s how I spent eight innings in this way.”But I always tried to do something for the team. I got a lot of support from the seniors in the team and my wife.”

Gerrard nearly sold Aston Villa star who’s now one of the best in the PL

Aston Villa has had some brilliant strikers in the past, the likes of Gabby Agbonlahor, Christian Benteke and Dwight Yorke being just a few of them.

Agbonlahor scored 86 goals in 391 games played, sitting fourth in Villa’s all-time scorers list, whilst Yorke scored 88 goals in 264 outings, sitting third on the list. Peter Withe sits second in the list with 90 goals, whilst top of the list is Johnny Dixon with 101 strikes.

But Ollie Watkins already featured highly on the list, having scored 74 times in 176 matches. The 28-year-old is on track to become Villa’s all-time top scorer if he stays at the club and hits 250-300 games played, scoring at the same rate he is now.

But, once upon time, it looked as though he could leave the Midlands behind…

When Gerrard wanted to sell Watkins

Back in August 2022, Reports emerged suggesting that Everton were interested in signing the attacker from Villa, with it believed Steven Gerrard would have been willing to let him go with one source suggesting they didn’t see “eye to eye”.

Watkins has gone on to play 177 games for Villa, scoring 74 goals, providing 29 assists and totaling 14,698 minutes for the club.

He is now the club’s sixth-highest goalscorer of all-time, and could eclipse the aforementioned Dixon in first place if he stays at the club for the foreseeable future.

The 28-year-old only scored ten goals in 39 appearances for Gerrard, but has repaid the faith shown in him by Unai Emery, scoring 45 goals in 87 games for the Spaniard, also providing 20 assists.

You can see Watkins has improved in every metric from the 2022/23 season, becoming more progressive in the 23/24 campaign (both passes and carries), and continuing to become even more clinical in front of goal, going from a 0.17 goal/shot ratio in 22/23, to a 0.21 ratio in 24/25 so far.

Not only has this improved in his own goal scoring metrics, but his creation is also up, with 1.27 key passes per 90, more touches in the penalty area, and more assists (and expected assists), another metric that has risen each year since 22/23.

It was perhaps unsurprising, therefore, to see him take home the ‘playmaker’ award in the Premier League last term for the division’s highest tally of assist.

Emery has allowed Watkins to flourish, putting the right things in place to get the best out of the England international and the Spanish manager will be very glad Gerrard didn’t get his wish, and the goal-machine wasn’t sold back in 2022. He has become an elite striker, one of the best in English football.

Aston Villa may have just found their new Jack Grealish vs Bayern

He could be sold for a fortune after his exploits so far this season.

Yorkshire bowlers put their side in full control against Hampshire

Dom Bess fifty could prove priceless as visitors dominate at the Ageas Bowl

Yorkshire 243 (Bess 54, Abbott 3-47, Wheal 3-47) and 34 for 1 (Kohler-Cadmore 16*, Hill 10*, Wheal 1-16) lead Hampshire 163 (Vince 49, Coad 3-29, Thompson 3-35) by 114 runsYorkshire’s bowlers put their side in full control of the LV = County Championship clash against Hampshire on a day of White Rose dominance at the Ageas Bowl.Victory for either team would greatly enhance a push to be in the title mix, but it was the visitors who seized the initiative as Hampshire were bowled out for 163 having earlier dismissed the visitors for 243 before lunch.Yorkshire closed the day on 34 for 1 in their second innings – an imposing-looking lead of 114 – despite losing Adam Lyth for seven before the close. The visitors added 46 to their overnight total of 197 for 6, missing out on a second batting point by just seven runs, as Mason Crane mopped up the tail.Dom Bess top scored with a potentially priceless 54 before playing on to Keith Barker after Jordan Thompson had departed to the second ball of the morning from Brad Wheal.Crane then trapped Matthew Fisher and Ben Coad lbw to wrap up the innings and leave Hampshire’s batsmen with a tricky 35 minutes to negotiate before lunch. It was a task they failed miserably as the fired-up Yorkshire bowlers ripped through the top order with Ian Holland falling for a first-ball duck to Coad before Joe Weatherley edged Fisher behind to leave Hampshire reeling at 1 for 2.Nick Gubbins looked in decent touch as he unfurled three boundaries only for Coad to find the edge of his bat and Harry Brook pouched the catch at slip as Hampshire limped to lunch on 29 for 3.When play restarted the murky skies that had enveloped the ground since day one lifted as sun briefly broke through the clouds to create the best batting conditions of the match. In an encounter where run-scoring has been at a premium, James Vince showed his class with two boundaries from the first two balls he faced to raise hopes of a Hampshire rebuild.Yorkshire were convinced they had their man on 35 when Vince was struck on the pad by opposite skipper Steve Patterson with a ball that looked destined for middle and off-stumps. But umpire Nigel Llong kept his finger down, much to the dismay of the fielders, who then saw the elegant right-hander crunch the ball to the boundary two deliveries later.Yorkshire finally got the vital breakthrough when Vince, who had played a relatively risk-free innings, changed tack when on 49 only for his attempt to lift a short ball from Fisher over the rope finding the hands of George Hill.Vince’s exit sparked a collapse of 6 for 37 as Tom Alsop, who soaked up 96 balls for 12 runs, saw his torturous vigil ended by a peach of a delivery from Bess that clipped his off-stump.The impressive Thompson picked up the wickets of Liam Dawson, Barker and Crane either side of tea with Bess grabbing his second victim when Lewis McManus was smartly caught off his boot by Harry Duke.Wheal and Kyle Abbott added some valuable runs in a last-wicket stand of 40 before Coad wrapped up the innings to finish with 3 for 29.

Jordan Cox seizes the night as Kent end their long wait for T20 glory

Vital half-century is followed by a tour de force in the field as Somerset are outmuscled

David Hopps18-Sep-2021

Kent 167 for 7 (Cox 58*, Smeed 43, van der Merwe 3-19) beat Somerset 142 for 9 (Smeed 43, Denly 3-31) by 25 runsKent ended a 12-year drought without a trophy with a decisive 25-run victory against Somerset in the final of the Vitality Blast. And no matter how often it might be repeated that they deserved their success because of an all-round squad effort the whole summer long, attention will forever cling to Jordan Cox, who followed up a match-winning innings with a catch that never was and, minutes later, played the starring role in a catch that was so dreamlike it surely never happened. For Cox, only 20 but much more proven than many of the young players who graced Finals Day, it was a spellbinding day. He sprung to Kent’s rescue with a nervelessly-judged, unbeaten 58 from 28 balls (38 coming off his last 11 balls in the final three overs) and then played a central role in two notable “catches” – the first overruled by the combined might of the officials, the second which did not see his name appear in the scorebook.Blast Finals Day has a different feel to much of the T20 cricket played globally. Only rarely does it satisfy the yearning for big scores and an avalanche of sixes. It is September and squares on all major grounds are fatigued. But a slow pitch held up much better than might have been anticipated and another celebratory capacity crowd at Edgbaston insisted that, whatever uncertainty surrounds the future of county cricket, this tournament has a place in English cricket’s hearts. The final might have swung on an extraordinary moment when Somerset were 71 for 3 off 10.2. Smeed, who had played with impressive sagacity for 43 from 32 balls, appeared to have holed out for 37 at deep square leg, slog-sweeping Joe Denly’s legspin. The only problem was that as Cox nonchalantly took the catch, his team-mate, Daniel Bell-Drummond, came sliding in a split second later. Bell-Drummond was touching Cox and Bell-Drummond was touching the boundary marker. Thanks, skip. It was a daisy chain to disaster. After urgent deliberations between the three umpires and the match referee, Smeed was awarded six. It was a dubious ruling.Make them pay, the rest of Somerset’s party would have silently urged Smeed. But three balls later Smeed holed out against Denly, as he clothed a low full toss for Cox once more to trot in and swallow the top-edge. The impassioned fielder allowed himself a few words of retribution, but his most spectacular intervention was still to come. Another swipe to leg from Lewis Gregory off the ageless Darren Stevens, and Cox this time leapt balletically over the midwicket boundary to hang in the air, Cristiano Ronaldo style, and pat back a controlled catch to Matt Milnes. Somerset never looked likely again.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

All day, wickets had fallen in the Powerplay and Somerset were no different. Tom Banton, whose game would probably benefit from a winter of reflection, was stumped second ball for nought as Denly found turn for the first time. Lewis Goldsworthy fell to a leading edge. By the end of the 12th over, Somerset were 89 for 5, with Tom Lammonby deeply unfortunate to be adjudged lbw to a big turner from Denly that was sailing past leg stump. Why is the review process not implanted into the final stages of the Blast? Why has it not been implanted for years?Denly, who had not bowled a full T20 allocation this season, finished with 3 for 31, an excellent accomplice for his fellow legspinner, Afghanistan’s Qais Ahmad, who removed Tom Abell and Roelof van der Merwe at low cost. Opportunities abound in T20 cricket for budding legspinners, but it is still largely upstart young batters who are coming through. And Somerset’s have temporarily hit a wall.Kent’s 167 for 7 had looked about par. They stated solidly with the bat. Bell-Drummond was struck on the hand first ball, by Craig Overton, more disconcerting than anything he had experienced during his blissful match-winning 82 in the semi-final win against Sussex, but he and Zak Crawley looked a classy opening pair. Then Roelof van der Merwe intervened. Somerset’s fielding was ragged in their own semi-final win against Hampshire and whether they spent the intervening hours sleeping, watching TV or playing video games, they knew they had to raise their game. For Gregory, a captain playing when not fully fit, a back affliction preventing him from bowling, it would be tougher than most.Smeed started the recovery, clinging to a fast catch at short midwicket to silence Bell-Drummond. But the tour de force came when Denly decided to hit his first ball over long-off for six, quite a gambit even in this era. Abell pelted back from mid-off to hold a stunning catch near the boundary, completed by a full-length dive and recognisable jaw jut of satisfaction. Gregory had wisely moved himself from that position moments earlier.Remarkably, according to those remarkable minds who research such things, it was Denly’s fourth golden duck this year, adding to unproductive days for Brisbane Heat, Lahore Qalandars and London Spirit. He is not thought to have tried to bash all of them out of the ground.Abell’s jaw had hardly returned to its normal position when van der Merwe took his third wicket in his first nine balls, as Sam Billings slapped him to extra cover. Van der Merwe, a dyed-in-the-wool competitor, finished with 3 for 19, whereupon a hard-headed rebuilding policy from Jack Leaning and Cox left ambition until the last few overs.Leaning, who gave two difficult opportunities to Ben Green, a return catch, and the wicketkeeper Banton, a partially obscured, knee-high stumping that he did not get near, did not see it through, but just as Somerset imagined themselves favourites, Cox began to send legside blows into the night sky, Somerset’s seamers vanquished, as Kent set a total to be reckoned with.

Man Utd believe they’ll sign £10m-a-year target even if they sack Ten Hag

The Manchester United hierarchy believes they can sign a £10 million-a-year international regardless of Erik ten Hag’s future, according to a new report.

It has been a disappointing and frustrating start to the season for the Red Devils, as poor performances and results have led to questions being asked about the long-term future of Ten Hag. A meeting in London was conducted on Tuesday, but as of now the Dutchman remains in charge at Old Trafford.

Man Utd now tracking 22 y/o Arsenal target as new competition for Onana

Man Utd have set their sights on a new goalkeeper for 2025.

1 ByBrett Worthington Oct 9, 2024 Latest Man Utd transfer news

A lot of the talk around United is obviously about Ten Hag’s future, but even though it is only October, there has been a bit of speculation about who the club could be looking to target in 2025.

United could be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the New Year, or one that could at least provide competition for Andre Onana. A report has stated that the Red Devils are keeping a close eye on Sam Tickle of Wigan Athletic. Their recruitment team have made regular checks on the player, as they see the 22-year-old as someone who can provide cover and competition to Onana.

As well as scouting Tickle, United are keeping an eye on winger Jamie Leweling of Stuttgart. The 23-year-old has been impressive in the early parts of this season, with the Premier League side taking in Stuttgart’s recent game against Borussia Dortmund, which they won 5-1. Leweling is said to have impressed United during that game and could be a player they target to improve their wide options.

But the United chiefs are not stopping there, as they also believe they can sign an international defender to solve their left-back concerns.

Man Utd believe they can sign Ben Chilwell

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have made defender Ben Chilwell their top target as they look to strengthen their left-back options in January. The left-back is expected to leave Chelsea soon, with January being a strong possibility, as Enzo Maresca favours players such as Marc Cucurella, Renato Veiga, and Levi Colwill ahead of him.

The report states that teams from England and abroad are interested in signing the Englishman, who earns around £10 million a year. United continue to hold an interest in Chilwell after they looked at potentially signing him during the summer but opted against a move.

It goes on to add that United’s interest in Chilwell is regardless of what happens to Ten Hag, as they prepare to make an offer once the January transfer window comes around. The 27-year-old is considered to be at the top of their list for new left-backs, and they believe they can get their man due to his position in Maresca’s pecking order.

The concern for United would be that they are not the only teams interested in the defender, as La Liga giants Atlético Madrid are also keen, while Juventus are also interested, and the pair have made enquiries to see about his availability.
