Imagine him & Rodri: Man City could land £60m star to replace De Bruyne

Manchester City have had a very quiet transfer window so far, having only brought in one new player. This summer, they are coming off the back of a season in which they reclaimed just one of their three titles won during their famous treble season of 2022/23. They once again pipped Arsenal to the Premier League title.

Brazilian starlet Savio is their only incoming so far. They paid sister club Troyes £30.8m to bring the exciting winger to the Etihad Stadium. The move comes after an impressive season on loan at Girona, another of the Cityzens’ sister clubs.

In terms of outgoings, there could be one major transfer happening this summer at City. Savinho’s countryman Ederson has been subject to plenty of interest from Saudi Arabia, and Pep Guardiola accepted the fact that he could explore “other options” which might see him leave the club. However, the legendary manager did suggest that Kevin De Bruyne would stay at City beyond the transfer window.

With the transfer window hotting up, the Blues could well begin to accelerate their transfer incomings this summer. Recently, they have been linked with one Premier League star to enhance their attacking quality.

Man City target Premier League midfielder

The player in question here is Crystal Palace and England attacking midfielder Eberechi Eze. The 26-year-old shone for the Eagles last season and has now been linked with a big move away from Selhurst Park this summer.

According to a report from talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, on the Premier League All Access Podcast, City are one of the sides who are interested in signing the England international this summer.

Eberechi Eze celebrates for Crystal Palace

However, they are not thought to be the frontrunners. North London side Tottenham are also in the race to sign Eze, and Crook explains that the Lilywhites’ “interest is more advanced” than the eight-time Premier League champions. For City, it is a move that depends on De Bruyne’s future.

Should Guardiola’s side decide to sign Eze this summer, he is likely to cost around £60m. Palace are not thought to be willing to accept an offer any lower than that, according to BBC Sport's Alex Howell.

Why Eze would be a good signing

The 26-year-old attacking midfielder thrived under Oliver Glasner towards the back end of last season for Palace. Eze had an impressive campaign, scoring 11 times and grabbing four assists in just 27 Premier League games. However, he scored an incredible six goals and grabbed three assists in just 11 games under the Austrian, a run which helped him secure a spot in England’s Euro 2024 squad.

Eze is an enterprising attack-minded midfielder, who thrives between the lines and excels when drifting in from the left and getting on the ball in pockets of space behind the striker. Football analyst Ben Mattinson explained that the Palace number ten “brings the flair” to his side, and he could certainly transfer this over to the Etihad Stadium if a deal goes through.

He could be the dream replacement for De Bruyne if the Belgian does end up departing City either this summer or in 12 months' time.

The 26-year-old is a wonderful ball-carrier, one of the most prominent features of his game. He rides tackles smoothly and can change direction quickly thanks to his quick feet. He could excel playing in front of Rodri, who Guardiola said is “the best midfield player, currently, in the world by far”.

The Euro 2024 winner with Spain is superb defensively and would give Eze a real licence to get forward. He is one of the world’s best ball winners, and according to FBref, averages 7.12 ball recoveries per 90 minutes, which ranks him in the top 9%.

Having Rodri behind him frees up Eze from lots of defensive responsibility that he would normally have had at Selhurst Park. Ironically, Eze is good out of possession himself, averaging 5.91 ball recoveries per game according to FBref, which ranks him in the top 9% of attacking midfielders and wingers last season in the Premier League.

Not only that, the 26-year-old would be playing in a side with the highest average possession in the Premier League last season. According to Sofascore, the Cityzens had an average of 65.4% of the ball each game, more than any other side.

With that in mind, we could see Eze thrive under Guardiola in a team where he will have plenty of the ball. His aforementioned dribbling ability could shine under the tutelage of the Spaniard, as he would be able to constantly get on the ball in attacking areas. His impressive dribbling skills are also reflected in his FBref stats.

The 26-year-old attempts an average of 6.13 take-ons per 90, and completed 3.02 of those take-ons. That ranks him in the top 7% and 8% of attacking midfielders and wingers last season in the Premier League respectively. During the 2023/24 top-flight campaign last season, Eze also averaged 2.67 carries into the final third and 1.88 carries into the penalty area each game.

Eberechi Eze for Crystal Palace.

He is also a wonderful creative influence in the final third. City have an embarrassment of riches in that department already, so adding Eze to that firepower would be overwhelming for the rest of the Premier League.

Last season in the Premier League, the England international averaged 4.07 progressive passes and played an average of 2.37 key passes each game, the latter of which ranked him in the top 12% of attacking midfielders wingers.

Should City get a deal for Eze over the line this summer, it could be an environment in which he thrives. The midfielder loves to put on a show with the ball at his feet, and with reduced responsibility due to playing with Rodri, he could reach new heights at City.

£60m is an expensive fee, but City have the money and could need to replace De Bruyne in the near future. It certainly seems like it would be a wonderful signing if they get a deal done.

Chelsea could land a bigger talent than Osimhen in £75m "nightmare"

Cole Palmer single-handedly helped Chelsea secure a European spot last season after a campaign of inconsistent performances on the pitch.

However, the 22-year-old was consistently a bright spark for the Blues, registering 22 Premier League goals – the second most of any player in the division, with only Erling Haaland scoring more than the Englishman.

Todd Boehly spent £40m to bring the attacker to Stamford Bridge from rivals Manchester City last summer – an absolute bargain 12 months on from his move given his superb form in West London.

Chelsea star Cole Palmer

Including his 11 assists, Palmer was involved in 33 out of Chelsea’s 77 Premier League goals last campaign – contributing to 43% of the efforts, a reflection of how crucial he was during a dismal season for the club.

Despite his hugely successful first season at the club, he could further increase his tally in 2024/25 should new boss Enzo Maresca secure a deal for a player previously on the club’s radar.

Chelsea could land £75m talent this summer

In recent months, Chelsea have been on the hunt to sign a new talisman to help push the Blues back towards the top end of the Premier League after missing out on the top four last season.

Various names have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, including Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins – as reported earlier this month – who enjoyed a stellar campaign under boss Unai Emery.

Ollie Watkins for Aston Villa

The 28-year-old scored 19 times and registered 13 assists in his 37 Premier League appearances during the 2023/24, helping fire Villa to the Champions League for the first time in a generation.

His subsequent form earned him a call-up to the England national side for Euro 2024, scoring the crucial goal in the semi-final victory over the Netherlands – sending the nation to their second successful Euros final under Gareth Southgate.

Whilst it’s unclear how much he would cost the Blues this summer, less than a year ago, Villa placed a £75m price tag on his head – with any deal for Watkins at around that price a bargain for a player of his quality.

He could prove to be a cheaper and better alternative to a talent who has constantly been linked with a move to West London during the summer window.

Why Watkins would be a better option than Osimhen for Chelsea

Over the past couple of years, Napoli striker Victor Osimhen has been constantly linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, with this summer no different in the club’s pursuit for a new talisman.

Journalist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the Blues were still interested in a move for the Nigerian, with current Napoli boss Antonio Conte wanting to sign current Chelsea man Romelu Lukaku this summer.

However, when comparing his stats to Watkins’ from 2023/24, he was unable to match the Englishman in numerous key areas for a centre-forward in Maresca’s system.

The attacker, who’s a “nightmare to play against” as described by Leicester City defender Conor Coady, registered 14 more combined goals or assists with a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate than the Nigerian.

He also excelled in finding hidden teammates, achieving an 8% higher pass completion rate and averaging 1.5 progressive passes – fitting into Maresa’s philosophy of being comfortable in possession.

Watkins loves to play on the shoulder of the defender, making him perfect for Palmer who could improve his tally of 11 assists should the England international move to Stamford Bridge this summer – the playmaker notably having been the man to tee up the striker against Holland.

It may be a tricky move for the Midlands side to complete, but it would certainly bolster the club’s ranks in the centre-forward position, helping the Blues mount a charge for the top four this season.

The project could be an intriguing one for Watkins despite Villa’s recent success, with the 28-year-old having the ability to form an excellent partnership with his international teammate and take the club back to the top of the English pyramid once again.

As a proven Premier League striker – reaching double figures for goals in all four of his top-flight seasons – Watkins could represent a sure-fire success for the Blues, rather than taking a gamble on a newcomer to English football in Osimhen.

Stephen Fleming has stepped back from his role as Trent Rockets’ coach in the Hundred, with Andy Flower confirmed as his replacement.Fleming, the long-term head coach of IPL side Chennai Super Kings, took part in the competition’s inaugural draft in October 2019, but opted against travelling to the UK this summer. It is understood that Fleming had intended to bring his family over, but was unclear whether he would be able to do so with the country still in lockdown and decided to resign from the job.”I’m really disappointed that I won’t be coach of the side this summer but ultimately family has to come first,” Fleming said. “The current global crisis has made it very difficult to travel and the extra time needed for quarantines has made it hard to get the right work/home balance.  Andy is a world-class coach with experience all over the world and I’m sure the Trent Rockets men’s team will have a fantastic first season of the Hundred with him behind them.”Related

Flower: Looking after the person more important than developing the player

Flower, his replacement, has a growing reputation as a franchise coach. He is currently with Multan Sultans in the PSL after leading them to the top of the group stages in his first season. He has also coached Maratha Arabians to an Abu Dhabi T10 title, finished as a runner-up with St Lucia Zouks in the CPL and Delhi Bulls in the Abu Dhabi T10, and worked as Kings XI Punjab’s assistant coach in last year’s IPL.Flower was involved in the Rockets’ recruitment in Monday’s draft, which saw them sign Timm van der Gugten and Samit Patel to complete their squad. However, it is understood that some squad members were unaware of the change of coach until Tuesday.”Stephen will be a tough act to follow, but the guys put together a really strong squad in the original draft with a mix of international and local talent,” Flower said. “We have built on it in this draft with van der Gugten and Patel joining.”Flower’s appointment will reignite the debate over the absence of any British head coaches in the men’s Hundred, which came in for criticism when jobs were initially offered in 2019. All eight head coaches in the men’s competition are from overseas, though the majority of support staff are British.Jonathan Batty will replace Lydia Greenway as Oval Invincibles head coach•Getty Images

There has also been a change of head coach in the women’s competition, with Lydia Greenway stepping down from her role at Oval Invincibles. She will be replaced by Jonathan Batty, the former Gloucestershire, Northamptonshire and Surrey wicketkeeper, who was in interim charge of South East Stars in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy last summer. It is understood that Greenway is still likely to be involved in the competition as a commentator, having previously worked for both Sky Sports and the BBC.

Isso nos motiva e eu tiro a responsabilidade, pois sou o comandante. A derrota passou pela escolha da estratégia que tivemos para a partida. Foi um jogo que deu tudo errado, e eu não transfiro para os jogadores. A culpa é toda minha’.

Imagine him & Summerville: West Ham enquire over another potential signing

West Ham have only managed one win in their opening four pre-season fixtures, as they attempt to apply Julen Lopetegui's new possession-based style of football in time for the Premier League campaign kick-off.

The Hammers have conceded eight goals in those four fixtures, conceding three goals to both Wolves and Crystal Palace. However, they could be set for more defensive reinforcements, even after the signing of Max Kilman.

Former Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui

Both right and left full-backs have been linked with moves to West Ham, the most prominent being Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Manchester United, but those talks seem to have gone stale currently.

West Ham's hunt for a new full-back

According to reports from UOL, via Sport Witness, West Ham are interested in Monaco left-back, Caio Henrique, with the player having been subject to enquiries in recent weeks.

The report also states Nottingham Forest hold an interest in the 27-year-old full-back, but both the Hammers and Forest are yet to make any offers, with both "simply monitoring" the situation of the Brazilian.

Henrique made nine appearances for Monaco last campaign, coming off the back of a cruciate ligament tear which kept him out for 212 days, still managing five assists in 625 minutes for the French outfit.

Henrique and Summerville linkup

One of West Ham's most exciting signings this summer is former Leeds winger and Championship POTY, Crysencio Summerville. Joining off the back of a stellar campaign, where the 22-year-old made 49 appearances in all competitions, scoring 21 goals, providing ten assists, and totalling 3,892 minutes.

Of course, to get the best out of Summerville, the supporting cast will have to be up to scratch, and the current partner on his left flank would be Emerson, who is coming off the back of his best season at the club, scoring one goal, providing two assists, and contributing to eight clean sheets in his 47 appearances.

In comparison to Emerson, Henrique provides that extra quality going forwards, ranking in the top 1% for assists from left full-back in the top five European leagues, with 0.72 per 90.

The 27-year-old also offers that extra progressive passing, which would allow Summerville to get on the ball more often in advanced areas.

Emerson does bring better defensive numbers to the table though, averaging 3.04 tackles per 90, 1.19 interceptions per 90, and 1.35 blocks per 90, all ranking better than Henrique's metrics. Having said that, owning both these offensive defenders would allow for great rotation, and options for Lopetegui based on opposition quality.

Emerson West Ham

Henrique's arrival would be perfect for Summerville, and could create one of the most devastating and attacking left-hand sides in the league.

Summerville's 6.02 shot-creating actions per 90, mixed with the 3.62 shot-creating actions per 90 of Henrique, could provide the likes of Jarrod Bowen, Mohammed Kudus, and new signing Niclas Füllkrug with a whole host of chances.

Australia have an eye on pace to stay ahead of the pack

Tayla Vlaeminck is back from injury and the uncapped Darcie Brown is generating plenty of excitement

Andrew McGlashan12-Mar-2021Rachael Haynes believes Australia’s deepening stock of fast bowlers will provide a “point of difference” for the side as they build towards a 2021-22 schedule that has plenty of big prizes up for grabs.Tayla Vlaeminck is back in the squad for the tour of New Zealand for the first time since being ruled out of the T20 World Cup more than a year ago and is joined by the uncapped Darcie Brown, whose potential is creating much excitement in the game after a season where she has impressed in the WBBL and the WNCL.Belinda Vakarewa, who has one ODI cap from the 2017 World Cup, is also part of the squad and the injured Annabel Sutherland is tipped to push the speed gun further. Hannah Darlington, the other new name on the New Zealand tour, has been selected on the back of her death-bowling skillset in T20 cricket, while Taneale Peschel and Stella Campbell are among others whose progress will be watched closely.Related

“It’s really exciting, particularly for Australian cricket, that there’s this depth of fast bowlers,” Haynes, Australia’s vice-captain, told ESPNcricinfo ahead of flying out on Saturday. “Even as little as four years ago our attack was built around off-pace and a lot of spin. And now we are talking about having five or six different types of fast bowlers all of who are capable of bowling around that 120kph mark, and because they are young they are going to get quicker. It will be a point of difference for our side and will be really competitive for positions.”In her brief international appearances before injury, Vlaeminck hurried batters – especially in the tri-series which preceded the T20 World Cup – just days before a stress fracture in her foot was diagnosed and kept her out of action until the ongoing WNCL.And during the WNCL, there was an over from Brown that further highlighted her potential after a promising WBBL campaign for the Adelaide Strikers. Facing Queensland, she bounced out Georgia Voll then twice beat Beth Mooney with late inswingers that thundered into the pads, the second time trapping her lbw.Tayla Vlaeminck will be hoping her injury problems are behind her•Getty Images

“It’s not often you see a player burst onto the scene and bowl fast outswingers, hurry up some of the best players in the world,” Australia coach Matthew Mott said. “You can see that she rushes people, good players. Particularly in New Zealand conditions with the ball swinging I can’t wait to see her over there.”It will be an incredible learning opportunity for her regardless of whether she gets a start but she’s certainly in the mix. She has a lot of attributes we’ve been searching for.”South Africa’s Shabnim Ismail leads the line for fast bowlers at the moment – she was regularly clocking above 120kph in the WBBL – and Australia could face Lea Tahuhu if she is fit for the matches later this month. In England, 18-year-old Izzy Wong is tipped for a big future.Former Australia quick Cathryn Fitzpatrick is considered the greatest of all time but the new generation, at least those countries with well-funded female pathways, have the advantage of access to high performance set-ups from a young age.”Bringing through players like that requires a big investment in your pathway and talent ID,” Haynes said. “It really is a reflection on what WBBL has done in attracting different types of athletes to the sport.”Fast bowling is an area Mott has focused a lot of time on while working in the women’s game and can now see the results coming through.”I made it really clear from the moment I was in the game that it was the area that we had the most potential to develop,” he said. “The states deserve a lot of credit and the National Performance Squad with Tay [Vlaeminck] and Annabel where they learnt how to train properly. Those things have really helped develop some good quicks or are physically capable of doing it and think that’s exciting for the world game.”The state coaches and national coaches have all had their eye on the prize. If you can encourage these bowlers – because sometimes pace off the ball in women’s cricket is very effective – and wear a short-term lack of results with the bigger prize in mind that really starts to bear fruit.”There will also be interest in how Ellyse Perry goes with the ball in New Zealand after a season where she has struggled after her return from the serious hamstring injury which ended her T20 World Cup. In the WBBL she took eight wickets at 34.37 and an economy rate of 8.25, and in the WNCL has managed just two wickets in six matches while being Victoria’s most expensive bowler.”She had some issues with run-up at one stage but she looks as though she’s ironed that our herself and that’s exciting,” Mott said. “She’s one of the greats of all time and the longer she’s on the park the better she will be.”

Imagine him & Zubimendi: Liverpool targeting £20m sensation who Klopp loved

Over the last couple of transfer windows, Liverpool’s midfield has undergone somewhat of an overhaul, with the Reds aiming to push back towards a Premier League title fight.

Alexis MacAllister and Dominik Szoboszlai both arrived at Anfield in big-money transfers, with the duo making a combined 66 appearances in the league during the 2023/24 campaign.

However, new boss Arne Slot still wants more reinforcements at the heart of his side, with Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi edging closer to agreeing a deal to move to Merseyside this summer.

It had recently been reported that the Reds had advanced talks and could be prepared to pay the Spaniard’s €60m (£51m) release clause, fending off interest from Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal in the race for the 25-year-old.

Whilst he is undoubtedly a marquee signing that would transform Slot’s three-man midfield, he could yet target another talent to potentially feature alongside Zubimendi this season.

Liverpool want £20m ace who Klopp loves

According to GIVEMESPORT, Liverpool still have Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Manu Kone on their shortlist alongside Zubimendi, in an attempt to increase squad depth in midfield.

Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Manu Kone.

The 23-year-old, who’s part of France’s side for the ongoing Olympic Games, made 22 appearances in the Bundesliga last season, scoring once, as Mönchengladbach narrowly avoided relegation to the German second-tier.

A prior report claims that the German side only want a fee in the region of £20m to part ways with the youngster after their rapid decline in recent years.

It’s not the first time the Reds have been linked with a move to sign the Gladbach ace, with former boss Jürgen Klopp trying on numerous occasions to bring the Frenchman to Merseyside, but to no avail.

However, Liverpool could get their man this summer, with Kone potentially able to form an excellent partnership with Zubimendi should the pair complete their respective transfers.

Why Kone and Zubimendi would be perfect together for Liverpool

A natural number six has been on the agenda for some time at Anfield, with Slot’s side needing a player who can sit and regain possession, before supplying the passes to the likes of Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz to cause chaos in the final third.

The Spaniard would be the perfect player to do just that role, with his average of 1.7 tackles per 90 in LaLiga an impressive tally and one that would allow for added cover to the backline.

He also is more than capable of picking out a pass, finishing the campaign with an 86% pass completion rate, with an average of 5.2 progressive passes per 90 falling straight into the hands of fellow new addition Kone.

The “incredible” Frenchman, as described by scout Antonio Mango, had an impressive personal season despite Gladbach’s failures – averaging four progressive passes per 90, along with 2.4 progressive carries – making him perfect ahead of Zubimendi in a three-man system.

He also managed an average of 2.1 successful take-ons, demonstrating his ability to get past a man and get into forward areas, potentially allowing Salah to further increase his goal tally in 2024/25.

However, from time to time, he’s going to be unsuccessful in his attempts at carrying the ball forward, but he’s more than able to regain possession, as shown in his tally of 2.6 tackles won per 90 – making him the perfect box-to-box option for Slot.

Whilst it’s unclear whether the signing of the Sociedad talent would prevent a move for Kone, their respective figures over the last 12 months demonstrate how well they could work together in Liverpool’s midfield.

The duo would provide added stability at the heart of the side, handing the club the perfect opportunity to push towards a Premier League title push in the Dutchman’s first campaign at the helm.

Having previously been identified by Klopp a year ago, now could be the time for Kone to finally arrive at Anfield under the new regime.
