ICC confirms altered points system for World Test Championship

The board also introduced a minimum age restriction for international cricket which will apply across all cricket

ESPNcricinfo staff19-Nov-2020The ICC has confirmed the World Test Championship (WTC) points system will be amended, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, to decide the finalists on the basis of the percentage of points earned from those they contested for. The ICC Board approved the recommendation by its cricket committee, headed by Anil Kumble, which said that a team’s points earned will be calculated as a percentage of the points that were up for grabs, and the new standings will be decided accordingly, as had been reported by ESPNcricinfo last week. The decision was taken at the ICC’s last quarterly meeting of the year which began on Monday this week.World Test Championship points table as of November 2020•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Before the recommendations were approved, India led the table with 360 points followed by Australia on 296. Under the new system, India’s percentage points will now be 75% – 360 out of the 480 points they played for in four series – placing them second behind Australia, who will have 82.2%, calculated as 296 out of the 360 points they played for across three series. An ICC release stated that even though current regulations say that matches not completed shall be treated as draws with points split, the cricket committee decided to determine the final WTC standings from matches that would be completed before the final scheduled to be played next June in England.”Both the Cricket Committee and Chief Executives Committee supported the approach of ranking teams based on completed matches and points earned as this reflects their performance and doesn’t disadvantage teams that have been unable to compete all of their matches through no fault of their own,” ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said in a release. “We explored a whole range of options, but our Members felt strongly that we should proceed as planned with the first ever World Test Championship Final in June next year.”The new system does not drastically change the standings although a team like New Zealand, who retain their fourth spot behind Australia, Indian and England, might see it as a better opportunity to finish in the top two. If they earn the maximum 240 points from their two home series against West Indies and Pakistan in the coming months, they’ll finish with 70% points (420 out of 600). That would make them compete with England and India who take on each other in a five-match series early next year, and India also play four Tests in Australia in December-January. England, meanwhile, are trying to reschedule their postponed series against Sri Lanka.ICC introduces minimum age restrictionsThe ICC Board also introduced a minimum age restriction of 15 years for international cricket “to improve safeguarding of players”. The restriction will apply across all cricket including ICC events, bilateral cricket and Under-19 matches. “To play in any form of men’s, women’s or Under-19 international cricket players must now be a minimum age of 15,” the release said.”In case of exceptional circumstances, a Member Board could apply to the ICC to allow a player under the age of 15 to play for them. This could include where the player’s playing experience and mental development and wellbeing demonstrates that they would be capable of coping with the demands of international cricket.”Introduction of Excluded Persons Policy in Anti-Corruption CodeThe ICC Board also introduced an Excluded Persons Policy as part of the Anti-Corruption Code “with immediate effect”. The ICC release said it enables the ICC ACU to exclude corruptors who are “non-participants” to the Code to prevent people who attempt to corrupt the sport. The release further said it will also make it an offence for “participants” to the code to associate with excluded non-participants.”This is a significant addition to the ICC Anti-Corruption Code and enables the sport to impose an exclusion order on known corruptors preventing them from any involvement in cricket activities including playing, administration, financing, attendance or any kind of involvement in a league, team or franchise,” Sawhney said.”It will allow our ACU to better disrupt the activities of non-participant corruptors which currently the ICC have little, if any, control over. This is crucial if we are to continue to protect the integrity of our sport.”

Imagine him & Odegaard: Arsenal draw up plans for "mind-blowing" goalscorer

Last season saw Arsenal continue their campaign to dethrone Manchester City from atop the Premier League, and while they came close, it just wasn't to be.

Mikel Arteta's side produced the best defence in the competition, but with five fewer goals than the Sky Blues, they had to settle for second best.

So, it's unsurprising to see that the Gunners have been linked to a plethora of talented number nines this summer, from Benjamin Sesko a month ago to Viktor Gyokeres in the last few weeks.

However, recent reports have touted a different striker altogether for a move to North London, and he's a forward who could be unreal alongside Martin Odegaard.

Arsenal's striker search

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Arsenal have drawn up a list of striker targets for this summer, and one of the main names on the list is LOSC Lille star Jonathan David.

LOSC Lille striker Jonathan David

There is no mention of how much a deal for the Canadian superstar may cost the North Londoners, but a report from the Guardian last month revealed that he could be available for as little as £20m due to his contract expiring next summer.

While this is brilliant news for the Gunners, it's less than ideal that the same report claims Chelsea, Manchester United, West Ham United, and Tottenham Hotspur also want the 24-year-old.

Lille's Jonathan David

This level of interest could make signing David complicated, but for the supposed fee and based on his recent form, this is a transfer Arsenal cannot miss out on – especially as he could be incredible alongside Odegaard.

Why David would be a great teammate for Odegaard

Now, there are probably countless reasons why David would be a fantastic signing and a brilliant teammate for Odegaard, but there is one incredibly straightforward one: his output.

Last season, the Canadian superstar scored 26 goals and provided nine assists for his teammates in just 47 appearances, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.34 games for a club that didn't even finish in the top three.

This incredible form wasn't just down to a one-off season in which everything went his way, either. Over the last four campaigns, the 5 foot 9 marksman has found the back of the net on 84 occasions in 183 club appearances and provided 18 assists to boot.

This means that over the last four years, the New York-born dynamo has averaged a goal involvement every 1.79 games, lending credence to Canadian journalist Tony Marinaro's description of the 53-capped international as "one of the best strikers in the world."

So, if the "mind-blowing" striker, as talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him, can maintain such an impressive level of performance for a side not challenging for the league or a title in Europe, imagine what he could do in this current Arsenal team, and in particular, with the club's Norwegian wizard behind him.

The former Real Madrid wonderkid scored 11 goals and provided 11 assists in 48 games last season, equating to a goal involvement every 2.18 games on average, and was named the club's Player of the Season.

Moreover, according to FBref, which ranks players in similar positions across Europe's top five leagues, the mercurial talent sits in the top 1% of midfielders for shot-creating actions and touches in the penalty area, the top 2% for progressive passes, the top 3% for non-penalty expected goals and assists, and the top 4% for total shots and actual assists, all per 90.

Forget about Gyokeres: Arsenal want to sign "unstoppable" £42m striker

The goalscoring “machine” would be incredible in North London.

3 ByJack Salveson Holmes Jul 12, 2024

Ultimately, the prospect of a clinical striker such as David playing alongside the Gunners' outlandishly talented captain is undeniably exciting and therefore, Edu and Co should be doing all they can to bring the Canadian to the red side of North London this summer.

Henry Nicholls' battling ton puts New Zealand ahead on tough pitch

There were plenty of chances, but he capitalised on them as West Indies’ fast bowlers faded through the day

Karthik Krishnaswamy10-Dec-2020

It’s unlikely Henry Nicholls will score a scratchier, more fortune-laden hundred, but runs are runs, and they’re worth even more when they come on a greentop offering pace, bounce and seam movement. Nicholls’ innings ensured New Zealand wrested control of the second Test away from West Indies, who had begun the opening day positively with their fast bowlers, led by Shannon Gabriel in his 50th Test, enjoying the help on offer at the Basin Reserve. At stumps, New Zealand were 294 for 6, with Nicholls batting on 117.Nicholls, who had come to the crease some ten minutes before lunch, survived a difficult period at the start of the second session, when Alzarri Joseph peppered him with short balls from over the wicket, pitching in the left-hander’s blind spot outside leg stump and attacking the area between his hip and shoulder. There was a top-edged pull that fell in no-man’s land, a short-leg catch that didn’t stick in Shamarh Brooks’ hands, and a hooked six that could have been a catch at long leg had Jermaine Blackwood stayed on the rope rather than move some 10 yards in.Then Gabriel and the debutant Chemar Holder, who had been the pick of West Indies’ bowlers before lunch, returned and created a rash of chances that, on another day, would have earned them more than just one wicket between them. On this day, both Gabriel – with a length ball slanted across him – and Chemar Holder – with a full one that straightened from around the wicket – found Nicholls’ outside edge only for Darren Bravo to put him down both times at first slip. All the luck notwithstanding, there was plenty to admire about Nicholls’ innings, especially his discipline outside off stump, and the positive intent he showed when the ball was in his favoured areas: particularly against the short ball, ironically. As his innings progressed, it felt as if his early wobbles against that form of attack had led West Indies to overuse it, erroneously, especially given that their successes early in the day had come via bowling full lengths.Tom Blundell was bowled by Shannon Gabriel•Getty Images

Gabriel had been erratic at the start of the day, straying too full and often too straight to concede 21 in his first two overs, but once he settled into a rhythm, he kept asking difficult questions of New Zealand’s batsmen.Back at the top of the order following BJ Watling’s return, Tom Blundell gave West Indies a clear challenge to bowl full at him with his method of camping deep in the crease. Gabriel struck in the seventh over, finding a length that brought Blundell half-forward and bowling him through the gate with sharp inward movement.Tom Latham had set the platform for a big New Zealand total in Hamilton with a 184-ball 86 that was distinguished by his willingness to leave on length. There was even more bounce available in Wellington, and Latham left a fair few balls that whizzed six inches over the top of off stump as he moved serenely – save for a blow to the elbow from a Gabriel delivery that reared from a length – to 27.But West Indies were also more willing to try and get him to drive, even if it meant serving up the occasional half-volley. They found the perfect line and length for him in the sixth over after the drinks break, courtesy Chemar Holder. The ball was full enough to induce the drive without being full enough to feed the stroke. Then it straightened, and Latham, who was a little late getting his weight fully onto the front foot, edged behind. That wicket brought Ross Taylor to the crease. Gabriel immediately reappeared, discomfiting Taylor with seam movement and extra bounce, hitting him on the chest before getting one to straighten in the corridor, producing a hard-hands jab that he edged behind. At this point – New Zealand 78 for 3 and without Kane Williamson, 2.3 overs before lunch – it felt as if West Indies were slightly ahead. But through the rest of the day they let their control slip. Apart from the overuse of the short ball, they would have also been disappointed with Jason Holder’s display. Though he bowled more overs than any of his colleagues and ended the day as the only bowler with an economy rate below 3 an over, he presented surprisingly little threat in helpful conditions, often bowling a touch too short to get the edges, or a touch too wide to make the batsmen play.Henry Nicholls with a controlled pull shot that ensures the ball stays down•Getty Images

Nicholls was aided in his efforts by three successive half-century stands. Will Young played a couple of pristine drives down the ground, but endured a difficult time otherwise, with the West Indies quicks attacking his weakness of a short front-and-across trigger movement that left him crease-bound and in vulnerable positions both against the full ball angled into him and the rising ball in the corridor. Gabriel delivered the perfect example of the latter, laden with away seam, to finally end Young’s stay, and pick up his 150th Test wicket.By then he had added 70 with Nicholls, and the next two partnerships swelled New Zealand’s score by 55 and 83 respectively. Watling made 30 and looked perhaps the most fluent of New Zealand’s batsmen before chopping on to Joseph, and Daryl Mitchell showed plenty of positive intent – especially against the offspin of Roston Chase – to score 42 before being trapped in front by a blockhole ball from Chemar Holder.By then, Nicholls had reached his sixth Test hundred, breaking a run of 13 innings without a fifty. He grew increasingly secure at the crease without ever looking entirely fluent, and it seemed entirely appropriate that he brought up his hundred with a leading edge through point while looking to work the ball through midwicket.

There isn’t anything in the world today that will give you better than this. No fables, no mysteries, no fantasy worlds, no rollicking political thrillers will match up to India’s youngest members building around the oldest one, who took bruises, knocks and some amount of intimidation to take this game deep. And then, the patience – yes, the patience – of Pant. Strung along at a strike rate around 40 for the largest part, gave himself time. “Give yourself time,” they’ve been telling him forever. He did at Sydney, it was his best Test innings they said. And then he comes back, and he brings us this. Unbeaten on 89, taking India to win with three overs to spare. At the Gabba. No one does this at the Gabba. A record chase, a loss for Australia for the first time since 1988.A tied series was enough. A draw would do it. That was the talk all day. It was probably the balm that made this Indian line-up so composed today: play time, there’s little to lose. That manifested in a Shubman Gill innings of pure class up front. A 91 that kept Australia humble even as they kept breaching Pujara’s defenses to hit him, multiple times, on the body. This was the last day, this was Starc’s time. Gill tore into him for an over of 20 runs, and Starc never quite returned all day from that. Spare a thought for Pat Cummins – No. 1 in the world, possibly the fittest man in the game. He had to do it all today, carrying that bowling line-up, arguably the best in the world, that has been defied three innings in a row now. And it culminates in a series loss. This series was 0-1, India had been bowled out for 36. They were severely incapacitated. They had no business pulling off their greatest series win of all time, with ten minutes to go. Yet, here we are. What a series. Pure quality in every single session from two brilliantly competitive teams. It will take a while to forget it.5:15pm: It is onA hooked six, a spliced four, a ramp and a vicious sweep. Australia are utterly under the pump at the moment. There are no clouds, the cracks themselves are assisting India’s batsmen, and there isn’t a bowler in sight who seems to have an answer right now. India’s swashbuckling young left-handers are setting them up for history.4.39pm: 69runs, 15 overs, 6 wickets

4.07pm: The countdown beginsExactly a 100 to win off 20 overs, and the new ball has been taken as a light drizzle comes down on the Gabba. This is it, for Australia – they need to make something happen here, and they need to do it quick if they want to win this game. The final bit of advantage they can get as a bowling unit today.Successful chases at the Gabba•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

3.31pm: Rain check

2.41pm: TeaIndia now showing definite signs of aggression. That should only increase the deeper this game goes and, you’d think they’d be quite comfortable doing it as long as Pujara is at the other end; he has been a rock today, been struck thrice on the helmet, oe on the knuckles, and a handful of times on the body. But, as ever, he remains the assured figure in that batting line-up.Shubman Gill fell short of a maiden hundred but he set the template at the other end, one that Ajinkya Rahane was looking to follow as well. But Pat Cummins keeps pulling things back for Australia, and he’s done exactly that again towards the end of the session. Runs against him seem a distant dream at the moment – but the others have been vulnerable, particularly Mitchell Starc so far. Onto the final session now of a superb series. India need 145 off 37 overs, Australia need 7 wickets.1.56pm: No shot offered? Here is Sidharth Monga on the two lbw appeals against Pujara where it was deemed he wasn’t offering a shot:”Two really interesting reviews against Pujara today when he has been adjudicated to not be playing a shot. Neither of the replays showed enough of the ball hitting the stumps or there would be a huge controversy because, quite simply, Pujara was playing both the balls. According to the lbw law, you are or not playing a shot if you have “made no genuine attempt to play the ball with the bat”.Now there are times when batsmen do jump out of the crease and pretend to play a shot, hiding the bat behind the pad, but on both these occasions Pujara’s bat was next to the pad and not behind the pad the moment the ball hit the pad. These were two really harsh calls, and seem to have set a precedent, which will cast doubts in Pujara’s mind every time he steps out of the crease. At the time of writing this, Pujara has faced 853 balls in this series. Another 25 balls, and he will have a second entry in top 10 balls faced by a visiting batsman in a series in Australia in which he has played only four Tests.”

There is life in this contest now! Australia have gone shorter over the last half an hour, and as was the case in the last few innings, the pitch has responded to being slammed down. It has coincided with the sun coming out and drying up the overnight moisture a little more as well, so Australia will feel a little better going into lunch. And that is because India have batted superbly in the first session. They lost Rohit early but it’s been run-scoring from one end and trademark defiance at the other from Gill and Pujara. With little assistance for the bowlers early on, Gill drove gloriously through the line for his runs, and in the face of nasty short bowling, Pujara has worn a few on his body and been hit on the helmet twice without showing any signs of losing his shape. The pair has made sure India go into the break with nine wickets in hand and 62 overs to play.11.43am: Lyon goes around the wicket

It’s been a series of superb debuts on either side. Cameron Green and Mohammed Siraj ended pretty well yesterday doing their primary skills. Today, Gill has reminded us one last time this series that he is here and ready for Test cricket. All series he has been organised, had an appetite to attack when possible, and on this last day in a steep chase, he has provided just the start you need from an opener. A solid fifty.10.50am: DemonsPat Cummins struck early on day five to remove Rohit Sharma•Getty Images

Are non-existent so far. Maybe one from Starc has kicked up as goes around the wicket to aim for those cracks. But in general, it’s been consistent bounce today. Perhaps that has a little to do with Australia being fuller, and maybe the moisture underneath has helped too. To a smaller extent, the roller must have had an effect. But nothing scary so far for India.

These are all the dismissals in this game filtered for bowled, lbw and caught. A little caveat that it also includes wickets off spinners. But even accounting for that, the story is clear – it’s the fuller balls that are doing most damage. We’re likely to see more purchase for the relatively shorter lengths today, given the cracks and all, but Cummins capitalising perfectly this morning already. Pin the batsmen back, have them see a few kick up at them, and you can find the nicks off a good length.9.37am: On this dayFile photo: India can’t contain their delight after sealing the deal•AFP

Thirteen years ago, Irfan Pathan was named Man of the Match as India beat Australia in Perth. Things weren’t quite on par the way they are now, but this is the kind of thing that’d satisfy the optimistic Indian fan. H/T to Gaurav Sundararaman for spotting this.9.03amWe head into the last day of this sensational series with the opportunity for plenty of drama. India need 324 to win the series, Australia need 10 wickets. In both their paths is a glum forecast, but only one team really NEEDS to win. And that is Australia. A draw doesn’t do too much harm to India in terms of WTC prospects – considering they have a big home series coming – and they would get to retain the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. For Australia, it’s not that simple on either of those fronts. But perhaps the one thing they have going for them is that it is a lot easier to force a result with the ball rather than with the bat on this pitch and in these conditions. This is the piece with all the WTC scenarios for the two teams. And here is some info about the weather forecast for today. We are scheduled for 98 overs on paper.
