Chelsea must sell their ”flop” who’s worth £43m less than Gallagher

It’s no surprise that the Chelsea squad holds incredible value given the fact that they’ve spent close to £1 billion on transfers since the arrival of Todd Boehly.

Cole Palmer and Enzo Fernandez are among the most valued players at the club, but one player who may be worth more than expected is Conor Gallagher.

The England international has been ever-present in Mauricio Pochettino’s side this season, starting 36 games and registering 12 goal contributions.

This is an extremely impressive return from the Chelsea captain, but let’s take a look at a returning Blue who’s worth a whopping £43m less than Gallagher.

Kepa Arizzabalaga’s 22/23 campaign

In 2018, a relatively unknown player outside of Spain swapped Athletic Bilbao for Chelsea, becoming a record breaker as the most expensive goalkeeper of all time.

Kepa Arrizabalaga arrived at Stamford Bridge for an eye-watering £72m, instantly becoming the number one. But after a rough second season where he recorded a save percentage of just 54%, he was displaced the following summer by Edouard Mendy.

Last season, it was the Spaniard’s turn to once again become the first-choice shot-stopper after a poor spell from the Senegal keeper, making 29 appearances in the Premier League.

Despite keeping nine clean sheets and his saves per game percentage increasing to 71% this time around, a new goalkeeper was a priority in the transfer market over the summer, with Kepa not in Chelsea’s plans.

Kepa’s value in 2024

After the arrival of Robert Sanchez from Brighton & Hove Albion, Kepa returned to Spain just over a week later, this time joining Real Madrid on a season-long loan.

A long-term injury to Thibaut Courtois was the catalyst behind the 29-year-old’s move, and Kepa began the campaign as Carlo Ancelotti’s number one.

Real Madrid's loan goalkeeperKepa Arrizabalaga.

However, the Chelsea loanee suffered an injury himself in November, and since then, he’s been unable to get back into the side due to the unbelievable rise of Andriy Lunin, who’s been first-choice ever since.

This means that the Spanish keeper has only played four times in 2024, with his total La Liga appearances being 13, but amazingly, his value has still remained relatively high.

As of today, Kepa is valued at £26m, which is surprisingly the same as Sanchez and two times more than what Djordje Petrovic is estimated to be worth, according to CIES Football Observatory.

However, he will still be far from the most valuable asset at Chelsea this summer, especially compared to Gallagher, who’s valued at £69m, £43m more than the goalkeeper.

tottenham-conor-gallagher-dream-xi-jan-opinion

After the current campaign, Kepa will return to Chelsea, as per Fabrizio Romano, which may be the perfect opportunity for Mauricio Pochettino to sell the ace between the sticks.

Given that he’s not performed at Chelsea, as supported by journalist Zach Lowy labelling him a “flop,” it would be silly to not try and move him on via a permanent transfer while his stocks are still relatively high.

Overall, it’s quite clear that Chelsea have had an absolute howler with the signing of Kepa, and if they can recoup even a quarter of the £72m he cost, they should class that as a win.

Hundred faces salary cuts and partial re-draft – PCA chairman

Women’s salaries could be ring-fenced as new competition faces financial implications

Matt Roller22-Jun-2020

Salary bands in the Hundred are set to be cut by up to 20% for men’s players when the competition launches in 2021.Players were due to earn between £30,000 and £125,000 in the competition this year before the Covid-19 pandemic forced its postponement. Details are still being ironed out, but the range could now be cut to £24,000-£100,000 as English cricket comes to terms with the financial implications of a significantly reduced season.”There’s been up to 20% cuts to county contracts across the last few months – 17% for April and May, 20% for June and July, so far. So some sort of cut across the Hundred would make sense, keeping money in the game to support counties and county players as well,” said Daryl Mitchell, chairman of the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA). “I don’t think there will be any issues across that.”The 16 players picked at the top price in October’s draft included Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith and David Warner – all of whom set their reserve price at £125,000 – and five domestic players: Moeen Ali, Liam Livingstone, Eoin Morgan, Jason Roy and Dane Vilas. While there may be some concerns over whether top overseas players will still want to play in the competition on a lower wage, it is widely recognised that it would be wrong to freeze the salary pot for the Hundred at a time when so many young county players are concerned about their contract status. There is also a growing acceptance that some form of partial re-draft will be required for the competition. Contracts for the 2020 season were cancelled at the start of May after the tournament’s postponement, and since then regular discussions have taken place between the PCA and the ECB about how the squads will look next year.ALSO READ: Hundred coaches raise retention questions as player contracts cancelledUnder the Hundred’s initial retention rules, teams would have been able to retain up to ten players from their 2020 squad for the 2021 edition, at a salary band negotiated with the player. A mini-draft would then have followed to allow teams to fill the gaps in their squads. There appears to be little appetite for a total re-draft, but also a sense that completely freezing squads will be impossible.”It’s a pretty difficult one from a PCA perspective,” Mitchell said. “You’ve got 96 domestic players in the competition who had contracts for this year, and there’s obviously 300 or so that haven’t and would love to be a part of it.”Opinion seems to be split as to whether these rosters should be rolled over or not. I think it’s the right thing that there’s not going to be a complete re-draft from start to finish, but I think there’s going to be an element of retention from each of the teams from the squads they picked.”I think you need to see what sort of T20 competition is possible this year and how that pans out. Obviously England central contracts will be decided at the end of September or early October, and we don’t know what changes there might be from that. Then we need a little bit more clarity about the Future Tours Programme for next year, and also a little bit more clarity about the Kolpak situation for next year. There’s so many moving parts around it at the moment.”There are 10 players who won contracts to play as domestic players in the Hundred who are highly unlikely to be eligible to do so next year, Brexit permitting, with some less clear on their status having qualified through EU passports. Discussions are ongoing about that issue, including the possibility that their spots in the Hundred could be frozen for next year, but the legality of that move is unclear.”There’s been things discussed [about that],” Mitchell said. “Whether you can make exceptions for these guys, I don’t know. There’s legalities around this to consider as well, so I think again it’s something that’s still on the table.”We’ve done quite well with our county reps – I think there are six with Hundred contracts. We’ve also used our Personal Development Managers (PDMs) who are in contact with all the dressing rooms around the country to canvas opinion.”The salary cuts are unlikely to extend to the women’s competition, for which the initial salary bands ranged from £3,600 to £15,000 – significantly lower than the men’s. The ECB has announced that equal prize money will be on offer for men and women, but the scale of the disparity of pay between the two competitions raised eyebrows last year.”They need to be maintained, that’s my opinion,” Mitchell said. “They’re significantly less than the men’s salaries at the moment… I don’t think the cut across the men’s and the women’s would necessarily be the same.”Women’s cricketers have felt the squeeze from the financial implications of the pandemic harder than their male counterparts. The ECB was due to introduce 40 new contracts for female players this year, but those deals have been put on ice with 24 retainers introduced instead.Mitchell said that the situation for women’s players had been “incredibly tough” but that there was “light at the end of the tunnel” with full contracts for the new regional development centres set to be awarded before the end of the year.”Credit to the ECB – they’ve put 24 [players on] retainers to try and help those people out. There’s a little bit lacking for a lot of players financially, not playing in the Hundred as well, so it’s been tough for some of those players on the fringes who would have expected to become a full-time pro this year.”But I think there’s light at the end of the tunnel with those contracts being awarded at some point in the near future. As chairman, I’m looking forward to being able to welcome 40 women into the PCA as professional members.”

West Brom could sign Phillips replacement who scored in playoff finals

West Bromwich Albion didn't mess around after exiting the Championship play-off semi-final stages, revealing their retained list five days after their 3-1 second-leg defeat to the Saints, with seven senior Baggies players released in the process.

Out of all those chucked to the scrapheap, Matt Phillips' exit would have stung the most, considering the experienced 33-year-old had accumulated 255 appearances for the Baggies in total across eight memorable seasons, before being greeted with this news after an injury-heavy 2023/24 campaign personally.

Still, the ageing attacker registered 26 appearances when fit for Carlos Corberan's men and played his part somewhat – picking up six goal contributions along the way – but will now find he's a free agent come the end of this month regardless.

This could mean West Brom are in the market for many a winger to fill gaps in the areas down the flanks at the Hawthorns, which is why the promotion nearly-men are looking at this potential capture to soften the blow of the 33-year-old leaving for nothing.

West Brom still in the hunt for "fantastic" forward

Fresh off the back of a "fantastic" season with Oxford United, as it was described by football pundit Carlton Palmer recently, Josh Murphy now has a major decision to make, with his contract situation at the Kassam Stadium unresolved.

The Sun reported back in April that the likes of West Bromwich Albion, Southampton, Queens Park Rangers and more were going after the electric winger's services, who bagged ten goals from 38 games in total for the U's on the way to promotion being sealed.

Two of those ten strikes came during his side's victorious play-off final win over Bolton Wanderers at Wembley, as Murphy's tricks and flicks down the left wing proved too much for the Trotters to handle on the day, who collapsed on the big stage for Des Buckingham's men to win 2-0 to pull off a shock promotion.

Still hopeful that their ex-Norwich City man could stay put in Oxfordshire for his side's exciting voyage up to the Championship, with contract talks currently underway, the Baggies will still have their fingers crossed they can tempt him to relocate to the West Midlands instead, to possess a player in a similar ilk to Phillips again.

Why Murphy would be a strong Phillips replacement

Despite being more of a natural left winger, which is a position that also needs filling in Corberan's camp with Mikey Johnston returning back to Celtic, Murphy can still be a Phillips replacement in terms of what he offers to West Brom even whilst operating on the left flank.

Both content with twisting and turning defences with slaloming runs when darting forward, as can be seen in the table below, Murphy's ten goal contributions just in the regular season – all of which came in 2024 – wasn't far off being eclipsed by Phillips' six either, despite the soon-to-be free agent playing two games less as a regular absentee to the Hawthorns treatment room.

Bettering Phillips on a number of their comparative attacking statistics, however, Murphy could be viewed as the perfect replacement for Phillips, as well as bolstering the left channel for Corberan's men, with Johnston also departing meaning the Baggies need a new hero there.

Corberan's immediate future in the Baggies hot-seat isn't even secure at the moment though, but they'll hope he stays put in the dug-out for next season, with Murphy shining brightly potentially for a side who could go one better and win promotion next campaign.

West Brom could seal a "very special" signing to transform Thomas-Asante

West Bromwich Albion will hope Brandon Thomas-Asante is back firing in the goals next season regularly alongside this new recruit.

Dwayne and Darren Bravo keep Trinbago Knight Riders unbeaten

The Bravo brothers’ contribution meant Mohammad Nabi’s all-round show went in vain

The Report by Andrew Fidel Fernando26-Aug-2020

A moment worth the wait: Dwayne Bravo picks up his 500th T20 wicket•CPL T20 via Getty Images

Either side of the rain, which cut St Lucia Zouks’ innings to 17.1 overs and left the Trinbago Knight Riders only nine overs to bat, the Bravo brothers took the match by its collar and ensured a comfortable Knight Riders victory.Dwayne Bravo took his 500th T20 wicket en route to extraordinary figures of 2 for 7 off three overs, before Darren Bravo hit 23 not out off 13 balls to help the Knight Riders to their target of 72 off nine overs, with a full over to spare. The victory maintains the Knight Riders’ four-match winning streak, while handing the second-placed Zouks their second loss in five games.Dwayne Bravo ploughs through a milestoneNo other bowler has got even 400 T20 wickets, and yet here was Dwayne Bravo taking his 500th. Easily one of the top five cricketers in this format, he set the tone for this game with his opening spell, from which the Zouks never recovered. Dwayne claimed two wickets – having Rahkeem Cornwall caught, before bowling Roston Chase. But almost more importantly, he also only conceded five runs from those two overs, delivering seven dot balls – including the two wickets – and conceding only singles from the remaining deliveries. Dwayne returned for a third over, and was arguably even better at the death. He conceded only two singles in the 17th over.Darren Bravo propels Knight Riders across the lineAlthough 72 from nine overs seemed initially like a cakewalk, the Zouks did muster some sort of fight with the ball, taking the first four wickets off the first 3.3 overs of the innings to leave the Knight Riders at 34 for 4. Darren Bravo would ensure Dwayne’s work with the ball would not be for nothing, though, hitting two sixes to drive the Knight Riders home. The first of those was his 100th CPL six – one of those shots launched so far that it landed on the stadium roof and a new ball had to be called for.Nabi’s all-round showThe Zouks seemed to be in arrears for the majority of this match, but the man who was most relentlessly dragging them towards parity was Mohammad Nabi. He hit 30 not out off 22, and later claimed the wicket of Lendl Simmons with the second ball of the Knight Riders’ innings. He would go on to concede a six and a four to Colin Munro later in that over, and would finish with figures of 1 for 15 from two overs. Without Nabi, Zouks’ loss would have been even more stark, however.

Great escape gives England chance to maintain formidable home record

Can Australia bounce back from their horror collapse when they had the series for the taking?

Andrew McGlashan15-Sep-2020Big PictureSomehow there is a decider to this series. That looked a very small chance when Australia needed 88 to win with eight wickets and 19 overs in hand two days ago. But as well as the middle order staged a recovery in the opening match there remains a vulnerability and England were able to seize on it, albeit on a tricky pitch that made their total of 231 more demanding that it may have appeared.A key factor for this final game – the last of an extraordinary men’s international season that will be completed amid the Covid-19 pandemic – is that it will be played on a fresh pitch, although it’s worth saying how superbly the two groundsmen at Old Trafford and the Ageas Bowl have done to sustain the quality of surfaces over such a high turnover of matches.Who holds the advantage heading into this one? You would have to say England given the confidence boost of coming back from the brink on Sunday and an unbeaten home record that dates back to 2015 (when Australia were the last side to win a bilateral series in the country). However, perhaps due to the stop-start nature of the format since the World Cup, England have not quite hit their straps consistently in ODIs since then. For now, the top order has lost just a little of its aura – not that it would take much for it to return, and winning in different ways is certainly a good thing.Australia came into the tour having not played cricket for six months and perhaps a little lack of match hardness is partly to blame for their two defeats-from-the-jaws-of-victory performances in the first T20I and then the second ODI. However, particularly the way the collapse unfolded at breakneck speed two days ago will have been of concern. What they do have, though, is a very impressive pace attack with Josh Hazlewood outstanding in the two ODIs – conceded just 26 and 27 in 10 overs – while Adam Zampa is picking up wickets for fun. Bowling has never really been a massive concern for Australia; it’s the batting that continues to hold unanswered questions. Still, as shown in the opening match of the series, they are good enough to beat the world champions. England will need to be at their best to end this summer-like-no-other with a trophy.Jofra Archer celebrates as Marcus Stoinis departs•Pool/AFP via Getty Images

Form guide(last five completed matches)
England LWLWW
Australia LWWLLIn the spotlightJos Buttler was outstanding in the two T20Is he played, taking the Man of the Series award despite being allowed to step away for the final match, but he has not been able to rekindle that feeling in the first two ODs with scores of 1 and 3 as Australia have made inroads into England’s middle order. He has had a magnificent season, all amid the challenges of being in the bubble almost from start to finish, so if his powers are waning a touch towards the end (his keeping is still good) then that would be understandable. However, the prospect of a series to win could just be the moment to bring a final flourish. With one innings to go, it has been another low-scoring tour of England for David Warner. After a half-century in the first T20I he has made three single-figure scores and been dismissed by his newest nemesis, Jofra Archer, in all four innings. As in the Ashes when he became a walking wicket for Stuart Broad he has received some superb deliveries from Archer, notably the two in the one-day series, but he will be keen not to finish another trip to these shores with the memory of him falling regularly to the same England pace bowler.Team newsThe Curran brothers had a big impact after replacing Moeen Ali and Mark Wood in the XI. It would be tough on either of them to miss out for the decider. It might hinge on whether Wood’s ankle niggle was anything more than needing a match off to rest amid a tight turnaround. If Moeen didn’t play on the previous pitch, it’s unlikely he’ll be recalled on a new one.England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Jonny Bairstow, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan, 5 Sam Billings, 6 Jos Buttler (wk), 7 Chris Woakes, Sam Curran, 9 Tom Curran, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Jofra ArcherThe key decision will be again around whether Steven Smith is able to return after the blow on the head before the opening game. He has passed all his concussion tests but a cautious approach has been taken so far, and Justin Langer says a late decision will be made. Despite the middle-order collapse it’s unlikely the selectors will be drawn into any knee-jerk decisions.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Marcus Stoinis/Steven Smith, 4 Marnus Labuschagne, 5 Mitchell Marsh, 6 Alex Carey (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodPitch and conditionsA new pitch offers the prospect of something more in favour of the batsmen, although Old Trafford is usually a good battle between bat and ball on any surface. The forecast is for another dry and bright autumn day, although there have been a few signs of dew being a factor at the very end of the game.Stats and Trivia Joe Root needs 38 runs to reach 6000; Aaron Finch needs 29 to reach 5000 and Glenn Maxwell 45 to reach 3000 Josh Hazlewood has conceded just 2.65 runs per over this series. Since 2010, the lowest economy rate for an Australia bowler to play at least three matches in a series and bowl at least 20 overs is Doug Bollinger’s 3.28 against Pakistan in 2009-10 Tom Curran’s 0 for 28 was the most economical wicketless 10-over spell by an England bowler since 2006Quotes”Jofra Archer’s an incredibly talented bowler. Equally, David Warner – what a player. I was looking over numbers last night and Davey’s record over the last little bit, I know when he gets in, he scores hundreds in one-day cricket. It’s been a great contest, some of these one-on-one match-ups, and often the fast bowler against the opening batter, that’s why we get up to watch the game. I’m sure Davey, he’s a superstar, he’s working overtime to be up for tomorrow night’s game.”
“I think we’ve earned that respect over a four- or five-year period. Teams do realise that we can potentially win from any position and the game is not done until they get over the line. We’ve got that character and belief that we can win from any position.”
Chris Woakes reflects on England’s ability to overturn the odds as a 50-over team.

Monchi ready to replace Aston Villa star Matty Cash with Serie A full-back

Aston Villa are hoping to spend zero money in order to replace Matty Cash this summer with a player from the same city as the Poland international's likely destination.

Aston Villa transfer rumours

Aston Villa are gearing up for Champions League football in the forthcoming campaign following a 4th-place finish in the Premier League last time out. Manager Unai Emery has plenty of experience in Europe, making it to the Champions League semi-finals with Villarreal and winning the Europa League on several occasions. However, the majority of his Villa side have little to no experience in Europe and are likely to need some help managing playing league and European football at the highest level.

Exceptional Luiz replacement: Premier League ace wants to join Aston Villa

Unai Emery is eyeing up a reunion with one of his former players in the Midlands…

ByRoss Kilvington Jun 10, 2024

In turn, fresh names are expected to arrive at Villa Park over the summer as they bid to give a good account of themselves in the Champions League. Chelsea man Conor Gallagher has been named as a target for Villa, with the club believed to have already entered preliminary negotiations for the Englishman.

Elsewhere, Giovani Lo Celso, who worked under Emery during the second half of the 2021/22 season when he joined Villarreal on loan from Tottenham, is believed to be of interest to his former coach, while Villa have expressed an interest in making a swoop for Fulham star Andreas Pereira.

There was also speculation last week that Matty Cash could be on the way out the door following links to Chelsea full-back Reece James. And now, a fresh update on Villa's right-back spot has been provided.

Monchi ready to "go all in" to replace Aston Villa star

Recent reports from Italy stated that Aston Villa are "happy" to sell Matty Cash this summer, amid discussions with AC Milan. Now, Italian outlet Calciomercato [via Sport Witness] have shed further light on Cash's future and who the Villians may replace him with if he leaves.

The report claims AC Milan technical director Geoffrey Moncada met with Aston Villa director Monchi to discuss the potential transfer of Cash, with the Midlands side said to be willing to part ways with the Poland international for around £17m. At the same time, Villa are looking at the other side of Milan to replace Cash, with Inter's Denzel Dumfries named as the main target to replace the 26-year-old.

In terms of a fee for the Dutch full-back, Inter are said to want £17m, meaning Aston Villa would effectively pay nothing for Dumfries if they sell Cash to AC Milan for the same price, and Monchi is ready to "go all in" for the Dutchman if Cash is indeed sold.

Dumfries is two years older than Cash at 28, but unlike the Villa man, he has experience playing at the highest level in Europe. He started the 2022/23 Champions League final, which saw Inter bested by Manchester City, and has notched another 29 appearances in the competition – something Villa would likely find useful heading into the 2024/25 campaign. Dumfries also, on paper at least, had a better 2023/24 league campaign than the Aston Villa man.
