Clement ditches Silva in predicted Rangers line-up vs Ross County

Glasgow Rangers return to Premiership action on Sunday following a week's rest after their Old Firm efforts.

The Gers secured a 3-3 draw against Celtic last Sunday and were meant to play Dundee in midweek, but the game was called off yet again due to the state of their pitch, giving the club an extra few days of recovery.

They now trail Celtic by four points ahead of the clash against Ross County, with any more slip-ups looking like they could prove costly in the title race.

Philippe Clement should be able to welcome back a few players into the starting XI on Sunday following recent injury woes, and this could give the Light Blues a massive boost heading into the final few weeks.

The Belgian will certainly make some changes after a dismal first-half showing last week as Football FanCast predicts the team he will go with in the Highlands…

1 GK – Jack Butland

Jack Butland

England manager Gareth Southgate was present at Ibrox last week to watch Butland’s performance amid a potential spot in the 2024 European Championship squad.

The Englishman did ship three goals, yet his displays throughout the season have been impressive, to say the least. Across 49 matches, Butland has conceded 40 goals and kept 23 clean sheets as the Gers stand on the cusp of a treble.

2 RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier for Rangers.

The captain stepped up during the second half of the Old Firm clash last weekend to score the penalty which brought the Light Blues right back into the game.

This season, the defender has registered 33 goal contributions – 23 goals and ten assists – in 49 matches, which is his highest-scoring season of his spell in Glasgow.

He has already won one Premiership title, but in order to leave a lasting legacy, another one or two league crowns wouldn’t go amiss.

3 CB – Connor Goldson

The centre-back did not have the best of games against Celtic, losing possession 14 times while conceding the penalty from which they went two goals up in the first half.

Goldson showed some frailties during the 3-3 draw, and Clement will be hoping that his performance is much better against Ross County on Sunday.

4 CB – John Souttar

John Souttar

In contrast to Goldson, Souttar was a titan at the back for the club and is becoming a consistent member of the starting XI.

Not only did he win 100% of his aerial duels, but the centre-back didn’t let a head knock get the better of him, coming back onto the pitch in order to help the Gers salvage a draw.

5 LB – Ridvan Yilmaz

Since suffering an injury whilst away on international duty last month, Yilmaz has failed to appear for the Light Blues.

It looked as though the Dundee clash in midweek was going to be the chance for him to gain some minutes, but the extra few days off will have given him more time to build up his fitness levels.

The 22-year-old has created six big chances and averaged 1.7 key passes per game in the top flight this season, showcasing how impressive he is when bursting down the left wing.

6 CM – John Lundstram

Jack Butland

The midfielder has missed only one game under Clement, starting every single league match of 2024 thus far, emerging into an important player in the process.

His contract expires at the end of the current campaign and it appears as though the manager is waiting until the season is over before discussing his future.

7 CM – Dujon Sterling

Dujon Sterling

Mr Utility Man. Sterling has played across six different positions this season, filling in the gaps due to injury or loss of form by other players.

During the festive period where the Gers had plenty of midfielders out of action, Sterling slotted in alongside Lundstram and performed well, even winning the man of the match award in the League Cup final.

With Mohamed Diomande injured, the Englishman will come into the heart of the midfield.

8 RW – Abdallah Sima

Abdallah Sima

Although usually deployed on the left wing, the £6m-rated gem will come into the starting XI on the opposite flank due to his performance against Celtic.

Having come off the bench for the second half, Sima scored a wonderful goal to level the scores at 2-2 and thus deserves a place in the lineup on Sunday.

9 AM – Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell

The former Norwich City gem started the Old Firm tie on the bench, but was called into action during the second half.

Cantwell has scored six goals and grabbed five assists for the Light Blues this season and he could prove crucial in breaking down a Ross County defence which will aim to defend deep on Sunday.

10 LW – Rabbi Matondo

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

The saviour last weekend. Matondo came off the bench against Hibs a few weeks ago to score a stunning curling effort which secured a 3-1 win. Against Celtic, he repeated the feat, ensuring the Gers came away with a share of the points.

Fabio Silva will be dropped to the bench following an ineffective display last week where he took just 33 touches and made nine passes, failing to score or grab an assist.

Matondo very much deserves a start against Ross County following his goalscoring exploits in recent weeks, when he can hopefully maintain his run of form.

Stuart Broad 'still living for' the Ashes, even if he misses Sri Lanka tour

Veteran quick reveals pace plan for final South Africa Test with one eye already on Australia in 2021

Stuart Broad insists he is “perfectly fine” with missing out on selection for the Test squad to tour Sri Lanka but “is still living” for the chance to play one more Ashes series. While England’s spinners claimed 49 wickets in the three-match series that took place in Sri Lanka at the end of 2018, England’s seamers claimed just seven wickets between them.So Broad is realistic about the anticipated role for seamers in the two-Test series which begins in mid-March and says he would be “very happy” not to be involved if that gave England “the best chance of winning”.”The pitches last time made it a waste of time bowling seam,” Broad said. “I think 85 percent of wickets fell to spin. You’re definitely going to take three or four spinners in that tour party, so I don’t know if I’m going to be in it.”I do understand that varying the selection will help us in the long term. Winning in Sri Lanka last time we changed the mindset and it worked beautifully. The tough thing going this time is it could be different: you could pick four spinners, turn up and it nips all over the place.”If my next Test match is in June I’m perfectly fine with that because we’re about getting to the Test Championship final and you play your teams to suit the conditions. If the conditions in Sri Lanka don’t suit seam bowling I’m very happy not to be in the squad because you want to give England the best chance of winning the game. Not happy. But I’d accept it.”Jack Leach missed out in Hamilton because spin’s record there is appalling. Seam’s record can’t be that pretty in Colombo, so if I miss out I miss out.”ALSO READ: England’s quicks primed to hijack Philander’s farewellBut after an excellent year which has seen Broad claim 50 wickets at an average of 23.98 since the start of 2019, he is adamant there is a lot of international cricket left in him. And that, he hopes, includes the Ashes series that starts in November 2021.”Would I like to be part of another Ashes series in Australia? Absolutely,” he says. “I’m not someone who looks that far ahead. But I feel confident at the minute. I feel great. I feel physically good. All my fitness tests have gone in the right way which at 33 can be something that can fall away. I feel in a really good place.”I know I can still deliver when the heat is on and the pressure is burning. That excitement of bowling the first ball in Ashes series, I’m still living for that. I’ve still got a lot of fire in the belly and as soon as that fire goes I know my bowling boots will go. It’s still there.”Broad’s confidence can only have been boosted by a return to Johannesburg. He claimed 6-17 the last time England played here, four years ago, which included a spell of 5-1 in 36 balls. It was a spell which sealed the series for England and took Broad to the No. 1 spot in the Test bowling rankings.”It’s a brilliant place to play and a brilliant place to bowl as a tall bowler,” Broad says. “You get natural bounce. So I’m looking forward to this week.”I’ve just watched the 2016 spell back on social media this morning. It was probably less impressive than it felt. It wasn’t as if I was swinging it round corners and bowling jaffas. I suppose I made the batsmen play, but looking back this morning it wasn’t a particularly impressive spell of bowling.”It was the bounce that made it effective. In the bowlers’ meeting today I’m going to talk about width being your enemy here. It’s about making the batsmen play with a straight bat. You don’t want to be getting cut too often because it means you’re bowling too short.”It’s a bit like Perth: bowlers can bowl back of a length, the keeper takes it head height and it looks great but it’s actually not very effective. You want to bring batsmen forward here. Not necessarily bring the stumps into play, because of the bounce, but bring batsmen forward and get them edging off the front foot and not getting cut. It’s a good place to bowl but if you get it wrong you can disappear.”

£32m star should be fearing for his Arsenal career after Timber’s return

After 255 days, over 6,000 hours and more than 360,000 minutes later, Jurrien Timber is back in action for Arsenal.

This was not how the Dutchman's debut campaign was supposed to go. After his £38m move from Ajax, great things were hoped of for a young versatile defender who was set to add so much to this Arsenal team.

Timber had starred in pre-season, whether it was at right-back or at left-back, notably handed a 7/10 match rating by the Evening Standard for a stand-out display in the club's Community Shield victory.

However, on his Premier League debut, the defender sustained a horrific injury that would rule him out until now, the back end of April.

jurrien-timber-arsenal-transfer-gossip-edu-arteta-academy-injury-reuell-walters

The 22-year-old was fielded on the left-hand side of defence on that occasion and having looked comfortable against Nottingham Forest, was forced to be withdrawn after just 50 minutes. The prognosis wasn't great; an ACL injury.

He has been back on the grass at Colney for the last month or so and was handed his first minutes back in Arsenal colours for the U21s on Monday evening.

How Jurrien Timber played for Arsenal U21s

Having not seen much of the Netherlands international in action for their new club before his injury, there was a sense of intrigue among supporters as Timber was named among the starting XI to face Blackburn U21s on Monday night.

The final score ended 2-2 with TImber more than catching the eye. Fielded as an inverted left-back, the position Mikel Arteta no doubt has high hopes for him in, he shone immediately.

The clock hadn't even reached ten minutes before the 2023 signing made his mark in emphatic fashion.

Timber picked up the ball to the left-hand side of the penalty area before spinning the defender and unleashing a tremendous strike from the edge of the box into the far corner. It was proper postage stamp.

Arteta will no doubt have been delighted to see him make such an impact, with Arsenal youth expert, Jeorge Bird, describing the player's performance in more detail.

He said on social media: "Timber started the game excellently and immediately gave the U21s an extra dimension as an inverted left-back. He also provided an attacking threat and scored a superb goal. Didn’t have too much to do defensively. Seemed to inevitably tire as the half wore on."

So, when will we see him back in the senior side? It's been suggested that Arsenal want him in the squad for the Bournemouth game on 4th May.

What Timber's return means for Arsenal

The Gunners haven't had too many weaknesses this season. Indeed, they've scored goals in abundance, notably knocking six past West Ham and Sheffield United, and five past Burnley just a few months ago.

They also boast statistically the best defence in Europe. No side in the continent's top five leagues has a better expected goals against (xGA) tally than Arsenal in 2023/24 with their record of 26.57 sitting top of the tree. For context, unbeaten Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen sit in second with a record of 27.09.

While that is incredibly impressive, it's made all the more striking when you consider the problems they've had at left-back in Timber's absence.

Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber

Takehiro Tomiyasu has had his own demons with injury while Jakub Kiwior has endured a topsy-turvy campaign. At one stage in 2024 he looked like first choice on the left, that was until Oleksandr Zinchenko replaced him at half-time in the first leg of their Champions League tie with Bayern Munich.

Zinchenko may well have been the no.1 pick for that role last season but his performances this term mean that he could well be running scared now Timber is back in action.

The Ukrainian offers Arsenal a great deal in the build-up phases of play. There are few better players on the planet capable of playing the inverted role as well as he. However, that should not detract from the fact that the £32m man is a liability at the back.

One Arsenal writer, Oli Price Bates, even went as far as to describe him as "appalling" after his mistakes against Aston Villa cost Arsenal dearly.

As the Athletic's James McNicholas put it so well after that game; 'In a season in which Arteta has worked so hard to eliminate on-field jeopardy, Zinchenko is beginning to feel like a relic of last season’s more chaotic team.'

Timber, therefore, could be the man to restore calm to the left side of Arsenal's backline. The likes of Ben White, William Saliba and Gabriel all bring that to the team in abundance but their Dutch summer signing is the missing puzzle piece. Providing Arsenal can remain in the title race he could well still have a decisive say on where the Premier League trophy ends up come May.

Arteta could unleash Zinchenko in new role to revive his Arsenal career

Plunket Shield cancelled due to coronavirus measures, Wellington named champions

The final two rounds of the Plunket Shield, New Zealand’s domestic first-class competition, have been cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic with Wellington being named the 2019-20 champions.NZC chief executive David White said the decision had been made based on medical advice following the tightening of travel restrictions by the New Zealand government and in order to cut down on use of flights and hotels.Wellington are 26 points ahead of second place and have been awarded the title.ALSO READ: ‘I just had very, very mild cold’ – Lockie Ferguson after coronavirus concerns”The strong consensus within NZC is that extra measures need to be taken to safeguard both the health and well-being of the New Zealand cricket family and the wider public interest,” White said. “The medical advice we’re receiving is that we need to take a lead on this matter.”We’re informed the risk is very real; the pace of change is great – and we have a duty of care to not only our staff and players but our communities as well.”However, due to the lack of person-to-person transmission of COVID-19 in New Zealand, the advice of NZC medical staff and the Ministry of Health is that club and amateur cricket could continue.”The current advice is that there is no reason why community cricket should not continue unless, or until, there is new information to hand,” White said.NZC has also postponed the New Zealand Cricket Awards, scheduled for March 30, for similar reasons.”Hopefully this is something we can stage at a later, and more appropriate date – but at the moment it would be far too much of a risk to hold the event in a fortnight, as scheduled,” White said. “Our absolute priority right now is to safeguard the health and well-being of our staff, our players, our wider cricket family – and everyone else connected to the game in New Zealand.”The New Zealand squad made a hasty departure from Australia on Saturday when the government announced the majority of international travelers arriving into the country from midnight on Sunday would need to self-isolate for 14 days. The final two matches of the Chappell-Hadlee series were called off and Australia’s three match T20I tour also postponed.
