Bermuda are still mathematically alive for the playoff stage though

Namibia captain Gerhard Erasmus justified his decision to send Bermuda in after six of their top seven fell for single digits. This eventually helped set up a six-wicket win at ICC Academy Oval 2 on Wednesday.Jan Frylinck struck off the second ball as Kamau Leverock holed out to mid-off. Bermuda’s other big fish Delray Rawlins was reeled in before the Powerplay, top-edging a slog off Christi Viljoen to wicketkeeper Zane Green. When Terryn Fray was out playing a loose drive to mid-off, Bermuda were rocked at 23 for 3 inside six overs.Left-arm spinner Bernard Scholtz then capitalized on the early work done by the medium pacers to rip apart the middle order. He struck with his very first ball, as Janeiro Tucker was deceived in flight to be stumped. Three balls later, he had Deunte Darrell trapped in front for 2 before inducing a drive by Malachi Jones to long-off, rounding off his haul at 48 for 7.Stand-in captain Rodney Trott was out to leave them 50 for 7. But Okera Bascome, dropped down to No. 8 from his usual opener’s role, shepherded the tail as Bermuda rallied to score 56 for the final two wickets.Bascome seized on the short ball to pull Viljoen for four and six before he was finally bowled with a full delivery for 37 in the 16th. Derrick Brangman added an unbeaten 23 off 21 balls to stretch the innings to the full 20 overs. In reply, Niko Davin made light work of the chase. He started by driving Jones for a straight six in the opening over. Then he drove two more over long-off, and another over midwicket off Derrick Brangman’s left-arm spin in the second to bolt to 33 off 9 balls. He finally fell in the third, top-edging a slock off Leverock to cover.Leverock stood n Namibia’s march to the target. Two balls after claiming Davin, he snared JP Kotze for a golden duck with a short ball feathered down the leg side. In his third over, he claimed Craig Williams at backward point to a fine catch from Fray to make it 65 for 3 after seven overs. But he didn’t get much support from the other end.Bermuda are still mathematically alive for the playoff stage, but need to beat both Scotland and Netherlands in their remaining matches and have other results go their way. Namibia face Kenya and Singapore in their remaining two matches and wins in both would virtually guarantee their place in the playoff stage.

Playing again would 'almost be like a debut' – Fawad Alam

Returning batsman confident of performing despite decade-long Test absence

Danyal Rasool08-Dec-20192:42

There will always be pressure, but I’m looking ahead – Alam

It has been over ten years since he played the last of his three Test matches, and nearly five years since he played any international cricket, but Fawad Alam hasn’t been sitting twiddling his thumbs all this while.Year after year, he’s continued to press for national selection with remarkable performances on the domestic circuit, particularly in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Pakistan’s premier first-class competition. No player has scored more runs in the tournament than Fawad’s 3105, which have been achieved at an average of 56.45. There have been near misses; he was called up to a training camp ahead of the tour of England in 2018 and named in a couple of squads without getting a start. But off the back of a double century in the QeA and a dismal outing for the Test side in Australia, this time feels different. And for Fawad, it feels like a second debut. “I said the other day it will almost feel like a debut, and that’s true because it’s been such a long time since I last played,” Fawad told reporters in Karachi. “Whether I get a game or not depends on the management and selection committee. I’m just happy I was able to make it in the final 15. Where they feel I can deliver, they’ll give me a chance and I’m confident I’ll perform. The way the conditions and wickets shape up will determine whether I get a chance or not, obviously.”He waved away concerns that the pressure of playing at home – particularly in his hometown of Karachi, where the second Test will be played – would become too overwhelming. “When a player is playing a club match or a domestic game, there’s still pressure on you. The pressure of performance always remains with you so it’s not like it’s a new psychological thing. That will be there, but my job is to overcome it and try to deliver.”I should try and enjoy the opportunity I’ve been given right now and think positively. If I allow negative thoughts to cloud my mind my focus will be adversely affected. My aim is to make the most of this opportunity, and try to perform to the best level I can.”It would have been easy for Fawad to feel down on his luck and wallow in self-pity; indeed, much of the nation seemed to be doing that on his behalf. For all the runs he compiled, for the scarcely believable consistency on offer from the left-hander on the domestic circuit, multiple management and selection regimes would overlook him for the national side. They may well have had their reasons, but when players with significantly inferior records were called up and given repeated runs in the side even as Fawad sat out, there were suspicions there was something less honest than cricketing strategy behind Fawad’s continued exile.Fawad, though, did not allow himself that negativity, believing it would be detrimental to his game. “If you surround yourself with people who tell you you have been badly treated and fill your mind with negative stuff, then you may feel that sense of injustice. But that’s not what my friends and family were like; they motivated me to perform year after year after year. They kept me going and urged me to continue knocking at the selectors’ doors. My father always said I must not be upset, to act like a fighter and continue to fight for my place in the side.”The straight bat he uses to such good effect in domestic games across the country was in evidence at the press conference, too, where Fawad was eager to ward off any controversy. He was questioned about Inzamam-ul-Haq having reportedly jibed about “seeing better players than Fawad” and having compared him to Mark Ramprakash, who, despite a glittering career in the county game, couldn’t quite nail a place in the England side for long enough. Fawad, though, wouldn’t be drawn on Inzamam’s comments, and called it a “matter of honour” to be compared to a “great” like Ramprakash.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

“It’s a matter of honour for me to have my name tied to Mark Ramprakash. He’s just a great player and done so much for his country. The number of runs I’ve scored is puny compared to how many he’s scored. He’s scored over one hundred centuries [114] and I’m nowhere close to that either. I’m just here to perform to my best and prove doubters wrong.”As for Inzi , he is a legend of ours; I’m nowhere near him. I’m not worthy of snapping back at Inzamam in anyway, and that is not the way I was brought up. I was taught to respect my elders, and Inzi is entitled to his own viewpoint. I don’t feel it is appropriate to respond to him because I have too much respect for him.”You don’t plug away thanklessly on the domestic circuit in Pakistan without being somewhat daftly in love with the game, and that is what Fawad wished to speak of most of all. The excitement in his voice was most evident when speaking about Sri Lanka visiting to finally break the Test drought inflicted on the country since the 2009 terror attack on this week’s visitors, and his commitment to ensuring this would be a positive, memorable series.”It’s a very good thing to see Test cricket back in Pakistan after such a long time. It’s a good omen for Pakistan cricket, and for the entire country. We all need to make the event successful. Because how this goes will be relayed by the Sri Lankans to countries around the world so the better this goes, the more advantages it confers to Pakistan. I think the message is everyone should come here. The people have supported all the teams that came previously and had a good time. The fact that Test cricket is returning after such a long time means all true cricket lovers will want to get down to the stadium and support their team as well as Test cricket.”In those moments, Fawad Alam was a fan once more. If indeed he does get the fourth Test cap that he’s waited a decade for on Wednesday, he will need to switch back to being the ruthless accumulator people have become used to seeing on grounds across Pakistan. Except this time it won’t be Central Punjab or Northern Districts he’s looking to grind into submission, but a Sri Lankan cricket team looking to exorcise demons of its own in Pakistan.

Arsenal now lining up move to sign £40m star who Arteta knows well

On course to win the Premier League title for the first time since their invincible campaign in 2004, Arsenal could soon be better placed than they have been for a long time to welcome some of Europe's best players. And that could see them beat Barcelona in one particular transfer race.

Arsenal transfer news

It could be another big summer at The Emirates, with Arsenal already linked with moves for Morgan Gibbs-White and of course, Ivan Toney, who has been a name mentioned for some time now. The Brentford striker arguably offers that killer instinct that Gabriel Jesus so desperately lacks when leading the line for the Gunners and could finally get his move away from Brentford this summer.

Arsenal "suddenly stop" negotiations to keep "top player" at the club

He’s been a vital part of Mikel Arteta’s side.

ByTom Coates Mar 23, 2024

Gibbs-White, meanwhile, could be used to balance the books at Nottingham Forest. The England U21 international has been one of the standouts in the Midlands this season, but as Forest look to avoid a second Financial Fair Play charge, he could be among those sacrificed. With reports suggesting that Arsenal are interested, however, it's a move that may benefit both the club and the player.

In what would arguably be the most surprising move of the lot, however, according to The Sun, Arsenal are lining up a move to sign Joao Cancelo in the event that Barcelona fail to secure a permanent deal for the Manchester City loanee. The Catalan club are reportedly hesitant to meet City's £40m price tag for their full-back, leaving the door ajar for Arsenal.

Joao Cancelo for Barcelona.

Mikel Arteta worked with Cancelo when he was the assistant manager at The Etihad of course and as City look to finally clear him out on a permanent basis, the Spaniard could be reunited with the right-back this summer. What's more, another element that could help the deal is the fact that Fabio Vieira's agent is the same as Cancelo's, creating a useful connection for the Gunners to work with.

"Special" Cancelo is better than Zinchenko

If Arsenal do secure the signature of Cancelo this summer, then the thoughts of Oleksandr Zinchenko will certainly be interesting. The full-back struggled to get a place ahead of the Portugal star during his City days and could now suffer the same fate at Arsenal. The stats don't lie, however, and create quite a problem for the current Arsenal man.

Before things turned sour, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was also full of praise for Cancelo, saying via the club's official website:

"He played exceptionally, with the ball and without the ball. He is a special talent. Defensively sometimes he needs to be consistent but when he is consistent, his focus is fantastic. He’s a fantastic guy and a football player.”

So, if Barcelona fail to sign the full-back this summer, then Arsenal could be pulling off an act of genius by welcoming him with open arms.

First day of New Zealand's tour match cancelled due to extreme heat

New Zealand opted not to play against Victoria XI at Scotch College keeping player safety in mind

New Zealand have cancelled the opening day of their scheduled two-day tour match against Victoria XI in Melbourne on Friday due to extreme heat that is forecast.Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting temperatures of 43C in Melbourne on Friday combined with hot north-westerly winds. New Zealand’s first Test against Australia was played in 40-degree temperatures each day in Perth and now, the visitors have opted to cancel the first day’s play against Victoria.New Zealand did not play a warm-up game prior to the first Test and this was their only practice match outside of the three Tests on the tour. The game was scheduled to be a two-day red-ball match played on Friday and Sunday with a day’s break in between. They will instead train on Saturday morning at the MCG when temperatures are expected to be a far milder 23C before playing at Scotch College in a single day game on Sunday when the temperature is forecast to be 21C, where it has already been agreed that New Zealand will bat first.New Zealand coach Gary Stead said it was a common-sense outcome with player safety at the forefront of their mind.”(We’ve) decided to cancel tomorrow’s game just purely for player welfare and looking after the players,” Stead said. “If it’s going to be that hot then I’m not sure we’re going to get too much out of it and there’s just the danger element as well.”New Zealand’s bowlers will get a work out on Saturday morning in the MCG nets.”The guys can bowl the overs then that they would have bowled on Friday and we’ll still play the game on Sunday which will be a batting day for us,” Stead said.”It’s hard to underestimate the effect that Perth had on us as well. We were in 40-degree temperatures every day. The travel back from Perth to Melbourne is pretty gruelling as well and guys are still struggling a little bit to get their sleep patterns right. Having the extra day shouldn’t do any harm for us at all. “New Zealand trained in warm conditions in Melbourne on Wednesday and fast bowler Trent Boult got through the session unscathed and looks likely to line-up on Boxing Day after missing the Perth Test with an intercostal injury.”Trent bowled really well,” Stead said. “He looked somewhere near back to his best. He’s certainly on track to be available for the MCG Test.”

Chelsea were rinsed by Cobham flop who earned 2x more than Palmer

It's been another miserable season of football for Chelsea fans this year.

Mauricio Pochettino has failed to create an effective team at Stamford Bridge, and aside from an imposing FA Cup Semi-Final against Manchester City on the horizon, there is nothing left to play for in 2023/24.

One of the few positives to come out of this year for the Blues is Cole Palmer, who has been a revelation at the Bridge and almost singlehandedly saved the team from a relegation fight. However, he's earning considerably less than a former flop used to.

Cole Palmer's salary at Chelsea

The Pensioners paid Manchester City £42.5m to sign Palmer in the dying days of the summer transfer window last year, and to say they've already got their money's worth would be a colossal understatement.

In his first full season of regular senior football, the Wythenshawe-born gem has returned a staggering 32 goal involvements in 37 games, with 19 of those being goals and 13 being assists.

These are vital contributions as well, such as the opener against Arsenal at home, the late equaliser against City last year, or the incredibly dramatic last-second winner against Manchester United last week.

The "exceptional" talent, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, has been the shining light in Chelsea's bleakest of seasons, yet his £75k-per-week salary means that 15 players earn more than him in the squad.

However, what's even more surprising is that a former flop used to earn 2.4 times more than the young superstar despite doing very little to warrant it.

Callum Hudson-Odoi's salary at Chelsea

The former flop in question is Cobham graduate Callum Hudson-Odoi, who earned an enormous sum of money in west London before finally leaving last summer. But before we get to that, let's look at his Chelsea record.

Callum Hudson-Odoi

The Wandsworth-born ace spent five seasons in and around the first team from 2017/18 to 2021/22, in which he made 126 appearances, scored 16 goals, provided 21 assists, and made a real name for himself as one of the most exciting up-and-coming youngsters in English football. So much so that in October 2020, Bayern Munich made an offer to take him on loan with a £70m option to buy.

This hype saw his wages soar from just £400-per-week in the 17/18 season to £2500-per-week the season after and £120k-per-week in 19/20 all the way to £180k-per-week for the 20/21 and 21/22 campaigns – a staggering increase of 44,900%.

Unfortunately for all involved, this coincided with multiple injury problems and a downturn in form, which led to a doomed loan move to Bayer Leverkusen for the 2022/23 campaign to try and rediscover his magic.

Upon his return to London, the former wonderkid remained a Chelsea player for another four weeks before finally leaving the Bridge for good to join Nottingham Forest, where he has since started to impress again.

So, when accounting for his wages during the five seasons and four weeks he was actually at the club, the 23-year-old cost the Pensioners a mindboggling £25.7m. In other words, he cost £1.6m-per-goal, £1.2m-per-assist, or £204k-per-appearance – talk about value for money.

Ultimately, the case of Hudson-Odoi at Chelsea is another 'what could've been' regarding an incredibly promising but injury-prone player. However, it still seems absurd to this day that he saw a wage rise of 44,900% and earned over double what Palmer does today.

BCB increases Test-match fees by over 70%

Mashrafe Mortaza asks that he be kept off contracts list

Mohammad Isam12-Jan-2020

BCB

The BCB has raised the match fees of Bangladesh’s centrally contracted players after three years, with the highest jump given to Test fees. In the 2020 calendar year, a player will earn BDT 600,000 (approximately $7,000 approx) per Test, which is a rise of more than 70% from their BDT 350,000 ($4,000 approx) from 2017 and 2019.The rise in Test match fees comes after a poor year in the longest format, when Bangladesh lost all five matches to New Zealand, Afghanistan and India. But the BCB has put emphasis on their performance in Tests in light of the World Test Championship, which has already increased the number of Tests Bangladesh play in the next two years.Match fees for ODIs and T20Is have also increased significantly from the previous three years. For each ODI, a player will get BDT 300,000 ($3,500 approx) compared to the previous BDT 200,000 ($2,300 approx), while the match fees for T20Is have increased from BDT 125,000 ($1,400 approx) to BDT 200,000 ($2,300 approx).BCB president Nazmul Hassan, after the board meeting on Sunday, said that they will also reconsider the number of centrally contracted players. During the players’ strike last year, the cricketers had demanded that the number should be 30. They had also pointed out that their salary or match fee hadn’t increased since 2017.”We will again discuss the number of players on January 15. We want there to be some more new guys who have performed recently,” said Hassan. He also said that Mashrafe Mortaza, Bangladesh’s ODI captain, had asked the board to not given him a central contract. “Mashrafe Mortaza has asked us not to keep him in the central contract [list]. He will continue playing but he wants someone new to get a place among the contracted players,” Hassan said. “We have accepted it.”
