Tom Banton's emergence keeps Somerset's title challenge beating

Nine final-day wickets stand between Somerset and a sixth win in eight after they gradually turned the screw on Hampshire

Hampshire 12 for 1 and 349 (Northeast 101, J Overton 5-70) need 409 runs to beat Somerset 408 (Hildreth 105, Abbott 6-84) and 358 for 8 declared (Ali 79, Banton 70, Abell 58) Nine final-day wickets stand between Somerset and a sixth win in eight Championship games this season after they gradually turned the screw on Hampshire with a dominant batting display. Led by Azhar Ali, whose 79 marked only his second fifty of the season, and the impressive Tom Banton, Somerset racked up a lead of over 400, before Lewis Gregory’s late wicket confirmed their position of superiority. The task facing Hampshire’s batting line-up, already missing James Vince and Liam Dawson due to England commitments, is to occupy the crease for a full day, and is made even harder by injuries to Joe Weatherley (ankle) and Tom Alsop (hamstring).Taunton has become synonymous with short, spin-dominated games in recent years, but this pitch has played more like one of the tracks of old. It is flat and hard, and Somerset’s spinners Dom Bess and Jack Leach will rely on footholes tomorrow if they are to play the role expected of them. After Gregory made short work of Hampshire’s tail, Tom Abell and Ali were dominant for the rest of the morning. Somerset’s highest opening partnership of the season had been just 30 – epitomising the struggles of Marcus Trescothick – but they faced no great difficulty seeing off the new ball on a placid pitch against a bowling attack that looked equally flat.Keith Barker’s tight spell from round the wicket after lunch eventually delivered the breakthrough: he bowled Abell for an attractive fifty after cramping him for room, and nicked off James Hildreth for two.The problem for Hampshire was that their double strike meant the arrival of Banton, whose star seems to rise every time he bats.Banton’s most eye-catching shot is the straight drive, which he nails down the ground with a high front elbow and an exaggerated follow-through, but here he unfurled his full array of strokes as Somerset looked to build a commanding lead.He started with a back-foot punch through the covers in the style of Shai Hope – crisp, clean, and controlled. Then there was the swivel pull nailed through backwards square off Abbott; the hold-the-pose steer through wide mid-on; and the full-blooded cover drive so easy on the eye you wanted to take it out to share a bottle of red and a mezze platter.Banton’s ascent to higher honours is a matter of when, not if. His imposing style has already won him a plethora of high-profile admirers, and scores of 112, 59, and 69 in his three Royal London Cup knockout games – the last of them in a run chase in a Lord’s final, no less – betray an appetite for the big stage. It took a freak dismissal to prevent him reaching a maiden first-class hundred that had looked like an inevitability for much of the afternoon. On 70, Banton went to sweep a ball from Mason Crane out the rough, which then looped up into the gloves of substitute wicket-keeper Lewis McManus. Replays showed it had hit him low on the forearm rather than on the glove, and Banton was visibly distraught as he trudged off.Crane endured another rough day after a first-innings return of 0 for 88 in 12 overs. He repeatedly pulled out of his run-up and bowled several front-foot no-balls, and a handful of drag-downs and full tosses were given short shrift. He ended with three expensive wickets – although he was exasperated by a couple of caught-behind shouts that were turned down – and struggled to find his rhythm throughout.Crane remains a bowler with plenty of promise, not least with a white-ball in hand, but a flat pitch and a game between Division One title contenders is a cruel place to be learning and developing; how Hampshire would have loved to have Liam Dawson available to tie down one end and let their legspinner attack from the other.Fidel Edwards returned to snare a pair of late wickets, but his late spell only raised questions as to why he had bowled so sparingly throughout the day; in the age of player-on-player match-ups, it seemed like an oversight on the part of Northeast that Edwards bowled just three balls to Banton, with whom he had locked horns so memorably in the Lord’s final.Increasingly, the game at Taunton between Somerset and Essex on September 23 looks like a title decider in the making; if both sides can force wins tomorrow, the Championship will begin to feel like a two-horse race.

Pressure on BCCI to comply with National Anti-Doping Agency after Prithvi Shaw's suspension

The BCCI is the exception in the world of cricket: every other country complies with its national anti-doping body

The pressure has intensified on the BCCI to comply with National Anti-Doping Association (NADA) after Prithvi Shaw’s positive drug test that led to a backdated suspension of eight months. The sports ministry of India has written a stern letter to the BCCI questioning its authority and its protocols in matters of dope tests, the reported. The letter was written days before the Shaw matter came to light but gains further significance in light of the handling of the issue.Shaw was tested in February, his results returned positive in May, but he earned an eight-month sentence in July, half of which was retrospective. During that period, Shaw had played the IPL and the T20 Mumbai League.Refusing to work with the government agency NADA, the BCCI is the exception in the world of cricket: every other country complies with its national anti-doping body, which in turn complies with the world body, World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). It is understood the BCCI has communicated to the ICC and WADA that it doesn’t trust NADA. Its argument to NADA has been that the BCCI is not a national sports federation, which doesn’t bring it under the ambit of the government agency. The BCCI, in its report, said it was convinced Shaw had taken the banned substance terbutaline inadvertently when he took a cough syrup. However, almost presciently, the sports ministry of India asked BCCI questions the world is now asking after the Shaw incident, the biggest being the conflict of interest involved. The letter said that in cases of positive tests, NADA forms an independent panel that has no “prior involvement” with the parties involved.”BCCI mechanism for adjudication in the event of positive dope result is not in accordance with the principles of natural justice,” the ministry has told the BCCI. “BCCI as an interested party and also the appointing authority for the appointment of officers, tribunal members or appellate authority for adjudication.”The letter also questioned the BCCI’s authority. “Article 5.2 of WADA code provides for sampling of athletes only by an anti-doping organisation with testing authority. It is a matter of fact that the BCCI is neither an anti-doping organisation with testing authority under WADA code nor it can acquire such a status,” the letter said. The BCCI does send the samples to the WADA-accredited National Drug Testing Laboratory (NDTL) in Delhi, which also does the testing for NADA.

Klopp could nullify Toney by unleashing Liverpool’s 5 ft 10 "warrior"

Liverpool have looked like Premier League title challengers for some time but face a problem in that Manchester City and Arsenal are also relentlessly fighting for domestic gold.

Jurgen Klopp's side have the lead after 24 matches but their rivals are just two points behind – with City holding a game in hand as they look to defend their title.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

With a trip to London to face Brentford next up in the division, the Merseysiders know that anything other than three points could be detrimental, but they will have to do it with a host of injuries threatening disruption.

Liverpool team news vs Brentford

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai have both been ruled out of this afternoon's fixture, while Thiago Alcantara is nowhere near a return after re-injuring himself during his cameo against Arsenal a few weeks back.

In brighter news, however, Mohamed Salah has been in full training this week and is in contention, with Alisson Becker and Joe Gomez recovering from illness and Conor Bradley returning from compassionate leave.

Ibrahima Konate is also likely to feature from the outset after missing last weekend's 3-1 victory over Burnley due to suspension, while Wataru Endo may well retain his starting berth at the anchor of the midfield.

Why Wataru Endo must start vs Brentford

Liverpool were far from their best against imperilled Burnley but quality prevailed and victory was secured, and while the frontline caught the eye with their attacking efforts, Endo's return from international duty with Japan cannot be understated.

Handed a 7/10 match rating by the Liverpool Echo's Ian Doyle, Endo kept it crisp in the engine room and tidied up nicely for the Anfield side, completing 88% of his passes, winning nine duels and making two key passes for his teammates, as per Sofascore.

He might not have the silkiness of Alexis Mac Allister but the 31-year-old sure knows how to break up play and hold the midfield together, once dubbed a "proper warrior and leader" by Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard.

Given that Brentford's Ivan Toney is fit and firing once again, having posted three goals from four matches since his anticipated return from suspension last month, Endo must be on the top of his game, taking control in the centre of the park and inhibiting the England international from receiving service and space in key areas.

Brentford's Ivan Toney

It's worth noting that while Toney is a high-class centre-forward, admired by many top outfits, he is not the most accurate with his distribution and has completed just 53% of his passes in the Premier League this season.

While this is largely down to his creativity and unceasing urge to make things happen, the 5 foot 10 Endo can negate his threat by stamping out the opportunities that come his way.

A collective effort will be needed for Klopp's side to win, with Bradley required to pick up from where he left off last month to ensure that Alexander-Arnold's absence is not sorely felt.

The 20-year-old right-back has been in electric form of late and plundered a goal and five assists during a bewildering run of form in January, and he will be important against a Brentford rearguard that will stand resilient and obstinate in its attempt to swat the Reds away.

But Liverpool want that title and one would think that if the likes of Endo and Bradley are on their a-game, strengthening the base and allowing the devastating frontline to wreak havoc, victory will be secured.

Sanju Samson, Shardul Thakur sparkle as India A wrap up series 4-1

Reeza Hendricks struck a half-century and Beuran Hendricks was impressive with the ball, but it wasn’t enough to stop the home side from winning by 36 runs

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Sep-2019

20 overs per sideSouth Africa A did hit back with a four-run (DLS method) win in the fourth one-dayer, but India A, who had won the first three games, showed that it was just a blip as they were dominant again in registering a 36-run win in the final game in Thiruvananthapuram, which gave them a 4-1 series win.In a match reduced to 20 overs a side following rain, the Indians opted to bat and rode on big hands from Sanju Samson and Shikhar Dhawan to put up 204 for 4. Shardul Thakur then led the show with the ball as the South Africans were bowled out for 168 off the last ball.Dhawan, included in the side for the last two games after completing his recovery – he had broken a thumb, forcing his World Cup campaign to end prematurely – had a worry early on as a Beuran Hendricks delivery hit his helmet in the third over. The batsman had walked across the stumps to try and play the scoop, but took his eyes off and got hit near the left ear.He was treated immediately, and continued batting, playing till the 14th over for a 36-ball 51 with five fours and two sides. The end came when he was caught by Kyle Verreynne attempting a slog-sweep off left-arm spinner George Linde, but by then he had helped the Indians get to 137, his partnership with Samson for the second wicket worth 135 runs after Prashant Chopra had fallen early.Samson, batting beautifully, carried on and was in sight of a century before Linde had his number too, the batsman falling for 91 off 48 balls, with six fours and seven sixes, with 25 balls left in the innings.Shreyas Iyer, the captain, put the finishing touches to an excellent batting effort with a 19-ball 36, and South Africa were faced with a steep ask against a well-oiled bowling machine. The required rate for the visitors was over ten an over, but they only got to 40 for 2 by the end of the six-over mark, losing Janneman Malan to Thakur and Temba Bavuma to Ishan Porel along the way. That meant there was too much to do for the other top-order batsmen, and though Reeza Hendricks and Verreynne put together a 69-run stand for the third wicket – Hendricks scored 59 and Verreynne 44 – they were always lagging behind the asking rate.Heinrich Klaasen, the other prominent batsman in the line-up, couldn’t quite kick on either, and the South Africans finished well short, Thakur’s 3 for 9 from three overs quite the standout bowling performance in a convincing win.The teams now get ready for the first of two four-day matches, in Thiruvananthapuram, with the second in Mysuru, starting September 9.

Liverpool have already scouted "incredible" £80m star ahead of the summer

It's all change at Anfield following Jurgen Klopp's announcement that he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, alongside his coaching staff. And whilst the changes take place off the pitch, FSG could hand their next manager the perfect start by welcoming a Premier League star in a big-money deal.

Liverpool transfer news

Away from the pitch, where Liverpool have just ticked off one of potentially four trophies this season in what would be a historic quadruple, the focus is on finding the manager to take charge of their next era after Klopp.

As of right now, all signs are pointing towards Xabi Alonso, who has reportedly been offered a three-year deal by FSG. The Bayer Leverkusen boss, unbeaten and on course to seal the Bundesliga title over Bayern Munich, has certainly left European football fans and media impressed so far this season.

Before the Reds can welcome the Spaniard, however, they must restructure, starting with a new sporting director. Reports have recently suggested that Michael Edwards is the man that FSG want to turn towards to lead the way in that role, but it seems as though the former Liverpool man is unlikely to accept any return at this stage.

Liverpool may turn to "brilliant" Premier League star in first post-Klopp move

He’s already Premier League proven.

ByTom Cunningham Feb 29, 2024

Although, if Edwards does make a return, then his first task may well be welcoming Pedro Neto. According to Fabrizio Romano's Daily Briefing for Caught Offside, Liverpool have already scouted Neto and are ones to watch in the race to sign the winger this summer, alongside Premier League rivals Arsenal. Wolverhampton Wanderers have reportedly placed an £80m price-tag on their star man in what would be one of the biggest deals in English football this summer.

"Incredible" Neto has a better output than Diaz

As heroic as Luis Diaz's recent battling performances have been in a red shirt, the former Porto man has often struggled when it comes to contributing to goals at Liverpool. Neto, meanwhile, has proven to be one of the Premier League's best creators this season, with his total of nine assists only beaten by Ollie Watkins, Kieran Trippier and Pascal Groß in the current campaign.

That said, it's no wonder that Wolves boss Gary O'Neil has had such high praise for Neto, saying via BBC Sport in September: "He has been absolutely incredible for the six or seven weeks I have been here. I am really pleased with where Pedro is at. He has given absolutely everything and showed a big moment of quality [at Luton] which sums up how he has been for me for the last six weeks.

"Let's not talk too soon. It is only six or seven weeks, but he has fully bought into everything we have asked. His work rate, the way he trains, playing within the shape and structure and taking information on board. He is incredibly talented and physically very gifted as well."

Cameron Archer may return to Aston Villa thanks to Sheffield United clause

Aston Villa were middle of the pack for net spend in the Premier League last summer after signing Moussa Diaby and Pau Torres in big-money deals. They were able to partly offset those purchases with four permanent sales, most of which only fetched small fees.

Striker Keinan Davis departed for Serie A outfit Udinese, Marvelous Nakamba joined newly-promoted Luton after a successful loan spell, and Jaden Philogene dropped down to the Championship with Hull City.

Positive new injury update emerges out of Aston Villa regarding Pau Torres

He was forced off in the first half against Nottingham Forest.

ByDavid Comerford Feb 28, 2024

But the headline departure, and the one that earned Villa a significant windfall, was Cameron Archer's £18m move to Sheffield United. A product of the Villa academy, Archer had impressed on half-season loans at Preston North End and Middlesbrough, scoring 18 goals across the two spells to put himself firmly in the shop window.

It was no surprise that he was willing to leave the club given that he'd be limited to 14 first-team appearances, and hadn't been given the chance to start a single Premier League game. But as it turns out, his story with Villa may not be done just yet.

Archer could return to Villa

According to talkSPORT, Villa are likely to re-sign Archer if Sheffield United are relegated. That looks a nigh-on certainty at this point, with the Blades a full 11 points from safety after 26 of 38 matches.

It's unclear exactly how much Villa would pay, but under a "clever clause" NSWE inserted into their agreement with Sheffield United, they'll be able to bring him back for a "cut-price fee" if Chris Wilder's side do go down.

"Fantastic" Archer could replace Duran

The big question Villa fans will be asking now is whether Archer has done enough to earn a squad role under Unai Emery, or whether he'll be sold again for another handsome profit.

Well, on paper, four goals in 16 league starts for Sheffield United doesn't sound particularly impressive, but context is important here. He's playing for the poorest team in the division, one that has scored fewer goals (22) than anybody else and generated the second-lowest xG (23.7).

Archer has tried to make the best of a bad situation, netting more open-play goals than anybody else in the squad and marginally out-performing his individual xG. James Quinn, who coached the Englishman during a stint at Solihull Moors, has described him as a player with real "technical quality" and a "fantastic finisher", and he's certainly held his own in front of goal despite the pressure of a relegation battle.

Crucially, Emery is believed to have some misgivings about Jhon Duran, whose attitude on the training ground has been a cause for concern "on multiple occasions", and so he may consider installing Archer as Ollie Watkins' deputy instead.
