Tune-up time for Sri Lanka ahead of World Cup against Associates on the rise

Big pictureOn the eve of the World Cup, there’s still time for a tune-up fight or two for a former champion as they gear up for the main event. In one corner, wearing purple and gold trunks, stands the Associate annihilator. Across the ring in the other corner, wearing plaid blue and white, stands the Associate on the rise.Arguably no Full Member has feasted on global cricket’s second-tier opposition more than Sri Lanka. They have especially enjoyed their fill when raiding European shores. Before new-age England made 400 totals passé, Sri Lanka’s total of 443 for 9 against Netherlands in 2006 stood as the ODI benchmark for more than a decade. Eight years later, they bowled the same opposition out at the 2014 World T20 for 39. They continued to show no mercy against Ireland on a visit to Malahide in 2016 by sprinting to 377.But they arrive in Edinburgh having lost eight straight ODIs, including a 5-0 sweep at the hands of South Africa. If traditions are made to be broken, then Scotland helped end the wretched run for Associates against Sri Lanka with a seven-wicket win in an unofficial warm-up at Kent in 2017 leading into the Champions Trophy. After two decades of futility against Test nations, that win gave Scotland the belief that they no longer have to hope heavyweight opposition shows up overweight and out of shape to be vulnerable enough for a sucker-punch.Scotland’s players aren’t afraid to stand in the middle of the ring and trade punches with a bloodied and bruised opponent, to wear them down and go all 12 rounds if not knock them down to the canvas. Just ask Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and a No. 1 ranked England.Though Netherlands claimed the WCL Championship and a spot in the 13-team ODI Super League beginning next year, it is Scotland who have made an even more compelling case over the last two years to become the 13th Full Member by virtue of their sustained competitiveness against Test nations. That feistiness was on display once again last week in a two-run loss on DLS to Afghanistan. In fact, a win over Sri Lanka will tick off one of the ICC’s defined criteria for applying for Full Membership: having three wins in ODIs or T20Is over top-10 ranked opposition inside 24 months. That run of form since 2017 has put ringside seats in hot demand. Cricket Scotland announced on Thursday that the malleable capacity at The Grange, capped at 1500 with temporarily imported stands for this series, had sold out for the first ODI. The Stockbridge faithful and a loyal Sri Lankan traveling fan troupe await the ding-ding-ding of bat on ball to signal the opening bell.Form guideScotland LWLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first)

In the spotlightA former MCC Young Cricketer, wicketkeeper Matthew Cross had been simmering with the bat for several years before a breakout 106 not out as part of a 201-run opening stand with Kyle Coetzer in the seven-wicket warm-up win over Sri Lanka in 2017. He followed it with his maiden ODI ton last year, then another against UAE at the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe. Though Kyle Coetzer gets most of the plaudits at the top of the order, Cross remains a threat.Few players at the forthcoming World Cup find themselves in as strange a position as Dimuth Karunaratne. Not part of Sri Lanka’s ODI side since the 2015 World Cup, he has been parachuted in as an emergency captain, following eight successive losses under Lasith Malinga. Karunaratne must now not only band together a struggling team, but also prove his own worth in the XI. Whether the selectors made the correct choice in installing him as captain remains to be seen, but he will feel a lot better about his leadership if he can produce runs at the top of the order.Team newsScotland vice-captain Richie Berrington suffered a broken left pinky in the field after making unbeaten 170 off 145 balls on Monday playing for Western Warriors in Scotland’s domestic 50-over competition. Dylan Budge has been drafted into the squad but Berrington’s slot will more likely be a toss-up between specialist batsman Michael Jones and Michael Leask’s all-round package.Scotland (possible): 1 Kyle Coetzer (capt.), 2 Matthew Cross (wk), 3 Calum MacLeod, 4 Michael Jones, 5 George Munsey, 6 Craig Wallace, 7 Tom Sole, 8 Mark Watt, 9 Alasdair Evans, 10 Safyaan Sharif, 11 Brad WhealIt’s difficult to pin down Sri Lanka’s exact XI, but Malinga has not yet arrived in Scotland, having played in the IPL final last Sunday, giving an opportunity for some of the medium pacers to make a final argument for being in the first choice World Cup starting XI against New Zealand at Cardiff on June 1.Sri Lanka (possible): 1 Dimuth Karunaratne (capt.), 2 Lahiru Thirimanne/Avishka Fernando, 3 Kusal Mendis, 4 Kusal Perera (wk), 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Dhananjaya de Silva, 7 Thisara Perera, 8 Isuru Udana, 9 Suranga Lakmal, 10 Jeffrey Vandersay, 11 Nuwan PradeepPitch and conditionsRegardless of the finish being decided by Duckworth-Lewis, Scotland’s first innings total of 325 looked below par in the loss to Afghanistan last week and the pitch may force bowlers to toil once more. The forecast is calling for rain in Edinburgh from midnight until 1pm on match day, though the drainage at the Grange is excellent so the probability of completing a reduced-overs match is high.Stats & Trivia Dimuth Karunaratne is one of the few players to have been in the XI on Sri Lanka’s last visit to the Grange in 2011. Both he and Mahela Jayawardene made half-centuries opening the batting in Sri Lanka’s 183-run win. The only other official ODI between the sides was at the 2015 World Cup, which Sri Lanka won by 148 runs.Calum MacLeod needs 47 runs to become the second Scotland batsman to cross 2000 runs in ODIs. Captain Kyle Coetzer became the first during his 79 last Friday against Afghanistan.Quotes”I think the thing we remember most about the match is the style of cricket we played. We talked about being aggressive with the ball and bat, stamping our authority on the game. It kind of kickstarted from there for everything that followed that so it was quite an important day in Scottish cricket.”
“We had a bad year for one-dayers but I think we did really well in the Test series. In South Africa, the major thing was team spirit. We played together. There was no senior-junior things. We played 11 as a team. So that sort of thing I want to get into the one-day side as well.”

Leeds could sign Archie Gray 2.0 before the deadline

Starting 27 games this season, despite only being 17 years of age still, Leeds United's homegrown product Archie Gray continues to back up why Daniel Farke has no uncertainty whatsoever in throwing the teenager into high-intensity Championship games.

Not as his free-flowing best in a cagey contest for Leeds against Preston in truth, the up-and-coming number 22 still showed in flashes why he keeps getting picked despite his relative inexperience – successful with two of his three dribble attempts in the 2-1 win, on top of winning four ground duels.

Farke will hope his acumen in getting the best out of Gray this season rubs off on this potential January signing, the new possible recruit highly thought of at his parent club.

Leeds going after Premier League youngster

The rumour mill at Elland Road suggests that Farke's promotion hopefuls are going after 20-year-old right-back Calvin Ramsay from Liverpool, the Daily Mail (18/01, pg. 69) stating that the emerging Reds youngster is one of many defensive targets on the Leeds shopping list.

Failing to ever really get going during a loan switch to Preston this campaign – starting just two games in an ill-fated loan switch to Lancashire before being recalled – a move out to Leeds could well be an opportunity for Ramsay to show to everyone what he's about away from his recent recurring injury woes.

Signed by Jurgen Klopp for £6.5m just last summer, Ramsay is highly regarded at Anfield for good reason and will want to hit the ground running at Elland Road if signed by the 49ers this month.

How Ramsay fits into the Leeds team

Even with Gray still competently doing a job at right-back despite naturally being more of a midfielder, the Whites could do with more reinforcements in this spot to fall back on for depth.

With Djed Spence no longer situated in West Yorkshire after having his Tottenham Hotspur loan deal terminated, the ex-Aberdeen youngster could fill a gap in reserve for the Whites and even stake a claim to start if all goes swimmingly.

Registering one goal and nine assists in a breakout season at Pittodrie during the 2021/22 campaign before the allure of the Premier League came calling, the former Aberdeen 22 would offer Leeds another energetic and expansive option down the flanks.

Notching up assists aplenty from set-piece situations whilst playing in Scotland, Leeds could benefit from Ramsay's expertise in floating in inch-perfect deliveries if he relocates.

With Leeds scoring a well-drilled free-kick routine away at Peterborough United recently – Ethan Ampadu arguably benefitting from lax Posh marking – Ramsay's excellence from set-pieces could prove to be an effective calling card on his arrival with the likes of Rodon and the goalscorer in the FA Cup clash lining up to find the back of the net.

Only helping himself to one assist so far this season from a right-back spot, Gray could be unshackled by the 20-year-old's arrival and played further forward with Ramsay taking over his defensive duties as a result.

Calvin Ramsay

Making two Liverpool first-team appearances to date – with Klopp describing the defender as "outstanding" when quizzed on the emerging Scotsman – this could well be a formative loan switch and a deal that strengthens Leeds in the crunch months to come.

Aston Villa could sign "incredible" Luiz replacement for big money

Aston Villa look like they are closing in on a move for Middlesbrough forward Morgan Rogers as the January transfer window approaches its final couple of days.

David Ornstein claimed that the Midlands side had submitted an improved offer worth £15m for the player while they are hopeful of wrapping a deal up by Thursday.

Unai Emery

This would be the first signing that Unai Emery makes this month who will become a part of the first-team squad, and it could turn out to be a shrewd acquisition indeed.

Will the Spaniard make any other signings before the close of play on Thursday? Villa are reportedly showing interest in a Portuguese midfielder who could replace Douglas Luiz.

The latest on Douglas Luiz's future at Aston Villa

The former Manchester City player has emerged as one of Emery’s most prized assets and his performances have certainly caught the eye of the Premier League's elite, most notably Arsenal.

The Gunners are casting an eye over the midfielder as Mikel Arteta looks to bolster his squad, yet Luiz appears to be content in the Midlands, saying: "I am very happy to hear the stories but I am here at Aston Villa. My focus is totally here.”

joao-palhinha-douglas-luiz-liverpool-opinion

It looks as though he is going to remain at Villa until the summer at the very least, but a big money offer could change things in a few months and Emery would suffer a big blow by losing him.

This season, the Brazilian not only ranks third in the squad for goals and assists (nine), but he also ranks fourth for big chances created (five), third for key passes per game (1.5) and sixth for successful dribbles per game (0.8) as he has proven to be a key threat going forward.

His performances have been the real driving force which has pushed Villa into securing a remarkable top-four spot and potentially even ending their near three-decade wait for a major trophy.

Unai Emery may have to begin planning for the exit of the Brazilian.

ByTom Lever Jan 26, 2024

Much can change between now and the summer transfer window however and Emery may have to prepare for the fact that Luiz could depart the club.

In one reported target, however, they could have a ready-made replacement waiting to be snapped up.

Villa looking for Douglas Luiz replacement

While it is evident that the signing of Rogers is to bolster his attacking options, it looks as though Emery is also keen to reinforce his midfield area.

According to Portuguese newspaper O Jogo (via Sport Witness), Villa are keen on reigniting a move for Sporting CP midfielder Pedro Goncalves.

Pedro Goncalves of Sporting-CP

Emery was keen on signing the player during the summer transfer window but was told he would have to smash Villa’s transfer record to secure his signature.

Not much has changed just six months down the line as he has a release clause of €80m (£68m) which means that Emery may have to wait until the end of the season to launch any sort of move for the midfielder.

West Ham United are also keen on signing him, and it could be a fight between the two Premier League sides to see who can lure him to England.

Villa are well stocked in the midfield area, yet the rumours surrounding Douglas Luiz’s future won't go away and perhaps Goncalves could become an ideal replacement for the Brazilian ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

Why Pedro Goncalves would be a dream Luiz replacement

The 25-year-old started his career at Wolverhampton Wanderers, yet he made just one first-team appearance for the Old Gold before leaving to join FC Famalicao in 2019.

His single season with the club was productive and this led to a move to Sporting CP, where he has shone since the 2020/21 campaign.

His versatile nature – being able to play as either a central midfielder or on both flanks – has led the former Wolves gem to score 68 goals and grab 43 assists across just 158 matches for the Portuguese side.

This works out as a goal contribution every 1.4 matches, a simply stunning ratio, and there is no doubt he could add some extra attacking dynamism to the Villa midfield.

When compared to positional peers across similar leagues, Goncalves stands out across a range of metrics. He ranks in the top 2% for non-penalty goals, total shots, assists, touches in the opposition box and progressive passes received per 90 across the previous 365 days, and it is clear he is among one of the finest forward-thinking midfielders when compared to his peers.

He may already be known to supporters in England due to his wonderful goal against Arsenal in last season's Europa League clash, where the midfielder beat Aaron Ramsdale from the halfway line as the club reached the quarter-finals of the competition.

Former Gunners forward Kevin Campbell dubbed the goal “an incredible strike” and it shows exactly what he can offer should he join Villa.

For his club side this term, Goncalves currently ranks second among the squad for goals and assists (12) in the top flight, while also ranking second for shots on target per game (1.2), first for big chances created (ten) and second for key passes per game (2.2), yet more evidence of his sublime talents in the heart of the pitch.

While it could cost Villa a pretty penny to sign Goncalves – either this month or in the summer – he should definitely be earmarked as a potential successor to Luiz should he move on.

Aged 25, the midfielder is arguably still hit his peak years and this could tempt Emery into making a more concrete move for the player, while his attacking abilities could take the pressure off Ollie Watkins as their main offensive weapon.

The 5 foot 8 maestro is clearly ready for the next step in his career and joining the Villa Park side could allow him to elevate his performances even more, playing against clubs such as Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester City on a regular basis.

These displays will arguably attract more attractive suitors than Villa and this suggests the Spaniard must act swiftly to bring him to the Premier League before it is too late.

Ponting concerned by Australia's short-ball troubles

“It’s pretty fair to say some of the boys are a bit disappointed with their batting at the top,” he said about their batting against West Indies

Melinda Farrell08-Jun-20194:18

Agarkar: India favourites against Australia, but only just

Ricky Ponting has expressed concern over the mindset of some of Australia’s batsmen despite the 15-run victory over West Indies in their group match. Australia lost five wickets for just 79 runs in the face of fast and aggressive short-pitched bowling before Steven Smith partnered with Alex Carey and Nathan Coulter-Nile to steady the innings.”It’s pretty fair to say some of the boys are a bit disappointed with their batting at the top,” Ponting said. “But listening to Steve Smith talk about it as well, the wicket was a little bit more uneven than what we thought it might have been, you could see a lot of uneven bounce with the shorter ball in particular.”The boys found it difficult to play the ball off the back foot. Yes, they led to a couple of dismissals, but it was more the follow-up balls and the mindset around how we played some of the short pitched bowling today that was the biggest concern.”Of particular concern to Ponting was that Usman Khawaja was struck twice by short balls. On the second occasion, he was attempting to pull Andre Russell and he was out edging a loose drive on the next delivery. Khawaja was also hit on the grille of his helmet facing Russell during Australia’s warm-up match against West Indies in Southampton and underwent scans on his jaw. Ponting said he hoped to find out if there was an underlying issue.”That’s a big part of my role now – I’m not going to teach him how to play a cover drive or a pull shot, I need to know what’s going through his mind in moments like that. What leads to that thinking about playing a shot like that. If I can help in some way just to get him through a situation like that and give him something else or something different to think about, I think that’s a huge part of coaching.”I thought he’s looked really good. He started his innings really well today, he punched one down the ground for four early on. He got hit in the head. I’m more concerned to what led to him playing that shot. What was he thinking? Was he expecting another short ball? Was he going to try to help it over backward point? What was he thinking? I’ll get to the bottom of it in the next 48 hours.”India’s bowling attack will present a different challenge to Australia’s batsmen at The Oval on Sunday. After a six-month period in which Australia and India have met in five Tests and five ODIs there will be some familiarity in the contest. But Ponting said that has only increased the Australians’ respect for Jasprit Bumrah, in particular.”I think everyone has learnt he’s probably one of the best fast bowlers in the world with a white or a red ball,” Ponting said. “They’ve learnt he can surprise you with pace. They’ve learnt his control is outstanding as well, which is why he’s one of the leading fast bowlers in the world.”We’ll need to be well prepared for him and I’m sure the boys will be, having played as much as they have against him during the summer.”They also pose some pretty strong threats with the spinners as well. They were both pretty good the other day – [Yuzvendra] Chahal and Kuldeep [Yadav]. There’s some work for the boys to do. More a mindset thing. I’ve been really happy with the skills I’ve seen from all the boys, it’s just about getting the mindset right and getting the adaptation of that mindset right between what you need at different times in the game and playing accordingly.”Ponting has been closely involved with several players in the India squad, thanks to coaching stints with Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals in the IPL. When asked if that gave him any insights he could pass on to the Australian players, he made a wry reference to Shane Warne’s comments in the that questioned Ponting’s involvement in the 2019 tournament on the grounds of conflict of interest.”I’m going to say I didn’t learn anything about any of the Indian batsmen while I was at the IPL otherwise I might not get a gig back there again. Warnie will have me out of a job like he tried to before this year’s IPL,” Ponting said.”I coached Rohit Sharma for a couple of years at Mumbai, I had Shikhar Dhawan for a couple of months at Delhi. I didn’t learn anything about those guys by being with them in India that I didn’t already know before.”I think I’m a pretty astute watcher of the game and, with batsmen, I’m pretty good at picking why certain batsmen are good at hitting the ball to particular areas. The way they pick up the bat, the way they hold the bat, the backlift, the foot movement – whatever it may be. So I don’t think I’ve learnt anything more about them having been a part of the IPL. It’s a different format as well obviously.”We saw a couple of days ago how good Rohit Sharma is at the top of the order for them, he’s a class player. I’m not the only one. Steve Smith’s shared dressing rooms with a lot of other players as well. As a coach, yes, I can bring some stuff, but a lot of the players in the team have played with them and against them over the years. If I can add a couple of gold nuggets, I’ll try to my best.”

West Brom in talks over late move for "outstanding" target alongside Johnston

West Bromwich Albion have been understated in their January transfer window business to date – only adding Andreas Weimann and Callum Marshall to their squad so far – but could now well be in for a rollercoaster finale to Deadline Day.

Linked with a last-gasp loan deal to bring Celtic winger Mikey Johnston to the Hawthorns, the Championship playoff-chasers could also now add a last-minute defensive addition to their group if rumours are to be believed.

West Brom going after ex-Arsenal man

Football journalist Mike McGrath has stated today that Aston Villa centre-back Calum Chambers is on the shopping list of various second-tier sides as the clock ticks closer to the window slamming shut, with West Brom name-checked as a potential destination for the former Arsenal defender.

Aston Villa journalist Jacob Tanswell – for The Athletic – did confirm this morning that Villa would be offloading Chambers on a loan deal, with there also being an option to buy outright added in if the 29-year-old impressed away from Villa Park in the potential deal.

The Baggies look to be the front-runners to land Chambers, Carlos Corberan hoping that Chambers' experience and Premier League qualities shine through in the division below to help his side win promotion to the top flight.

Chambers could well slot into the side alongside Johnston if a further deal can be reached with the Scottish giants, giving the West Midlands side a potential new look for Saturday's fixture with Birmingham City.

How Chambers would fit into the West Brom team

Chambers will give West Brom adequate cover at the back even if he's not banging down the door for immediate first-team opportunities, Corberan having to make do with young centre-back Caleb Taylor as one of his few defensive back-ups in the Black Country Derby last weekend.

Able to play both in the heart of defence and as a right-back, Chambers would fulfil the role of being a worthwhile utility option to have around the camp with the Spanish manager in the Hawthorns dug-out often bemoaning the lack of depth available to him.

calum-chambers-marcus-rashford

The £50k-per-week Villa reserve figure's obvious pedigree could eventually see him break into the first-team fold however, accumulating 176 Premier League appearances across his extensive career to date with 14 of those coming just last season for Unai Emery's men before falling down the pecking order this campaign.

Once described as an "outstanding" defender by iconic Gunners manager Arsene Wenger when Chambers was at the Emirates Stadium, the versatile 29-year-old could be a shrewd capture to help Corberan's men out if more injuries pile up.

Moreover, Johnston's addition from Celtic would also give the Baggies another attacking option if the Championship side are flat going forward in crunch matches to come – the out-of-favour 24-year-old winger netting 13 goals across 92 games featuring at Parkhead.

The current Celtic number 90 could give the likes of Jed Wallace and Tom Fellows a run for their money on his potential arrival, Corberan adding in bodies here and there to freshen up his squad and keep those performing well on their toes.

West Brom have seen first-hand the impact of what injuries can do to a squad, and so adding in more depth this Deadline Day would be seen as a major plus if these moves for Chambers and Johnston can get over the line in time.
