Liverpool: Rodgers’ £20m flop is now struggling in Turkey

Before Jurgen Klopp arrived at Liverpool in October 2015, It's safe to say that the club was in a mess, and they were heading in the wrong direction.

Under Brendan Rodgers, the Reds had challenged for the Premier League title only once, during the 2013/14 season and if it hadn’t been for a collapse of epic proportions, the Northern Irishman would’ve secured their first title since 1990.

Alas, they dropped points against Chelsea and Crystal Palace while Manchester City swooped in and snatched the most elusive of prizes away from the Anfield side. Having not expected to challenge for the league crown, Rodgers headed into the summer of 2014 aiming to further strengthen his squad in order to maintain another title push.

Luis Suárez, so often their talisman during 2013/14, was sold to Barcelona for a staggering £75m transfer fee, giving Rodgers a war chest to spend on new players.

The Uruguayan was arguably coming into his peak years, yet a sum like that proved too good to turn down and the former Swansea City boss embarked on a spending spree which the vast majority of Liverpool supporters will look back on and shudder.

In came the likes of Mario Balotelli, Alberto Moreno, Dejan Lovren and Adam Lallana among others, yet they didn’t exactly have the desired impact as the Reds finished the season trophyless as a title challenge was too tall a task, ending the campaign in sixth position.

One of Rodgers’ most disappointing signings was that of Lazar Markovic, who was expected to blossom into one of the finest attacking players on the continent following his move from Benfica.

How much did Lazar Markovic cost Liverpool?

The 20-year-old looked like he had a wonderful future ahead of him. The winger had already made 49 appearances for the Portuguese side while even earning 13 full caps for Serbia and for a fee of £20m, Rodgers looked to have secured an incredible bargain.

It wasn’t the most they had spent on a player that summer, yet it certainly looked like the most astute purchase, comforting themselves with the knowledge that if the player continued his meteoric rise and impressed in England, the youngster would soon rake in a massive profit for the Reds.

This was echoed by journalist Andy Brassell, who said: “He’s a player with a rare talent.

“The raw potential is absolutely enormous. If he can progress at the present rate he’s going to be worth twice the money that they paid for him in 12 to 18 months’ time, so it’s a good investment.”

Unfortunately, like most young gems who arrive in England with much fanfare and hype, Markovic failed to have a positive impact during his spell in Merseyside and the vast transfer fee clearly affected him and his performances.

What happened to Lazar Markovic?

As mentioned, the 2014/15 season proved to be underwhelming to say the least, with Rodgers failing to inspire the club to the heights they achieved the term before.

Much of this was down to his summer signings, as Balotelli barely found the net – scoring just four goals in 28 games for the club – while Lovren struggled to cope with the pressures of playing for Liverpool.

Markovic did get plenty of chances during his maiden campaign, making 34 appearances across all competitions, yet only 23 of these were starts and the winger contributed just three goals and a single assist, hardly figures that justified such a vast financial outlay.

These would be the only goals he would score for the Anfield side as he spent the next three years on loan at clubs such as Fenerbahce, Sporting CP and Hull City before finally leaving the Reds for free in 2019 for Fulham, as Klopp managed to get his reported £50k-per-week wages off the books.

Across five and a half years contracted to the club, Markovic played all of his matches during his debut season and he cost them £6.6m per goal, a rather disastrous sum of money which could have been spent elsewhere.

The Merseyside outfit had a nightmare on the right-winger back in 2014, and he is still currently playing, although failing to hit the heights which were projected for him all those years ago.

Where is Lazar Markovic now?

After leaving Fulham, the former Benfica starlet enjoyed somewhat of a career resurgence at his first club, Partizan Belgrade, as he registered 34 goal contributions – 20 goals and 14 assists – across three seasons, although it ended up being yet another false dawn.

Since the beginning of last season, Markovic has been plying his trade in Turkey, turning out for both Gaziantep and Trabzonspor, scoring just six times in 38 appearances combined.

Indeed, across 27 league matches during the 2022/23 season, Markovic missed six big chances, averaged only 0.3 shots on target per game and created just one big chance as he clearly failed to get his creative juices flowing or contribute anything meaningful to both his teams.

He hasn’t been much better during the embryonic stages of the new campaign either, ranking in a lowly ninth spot for overall Sofascore rating across the Gaziantep squad (6.79) while also ranking 11th for shots on target (0.1) per game, sixth for big chances created (one) and eighth for key passes per game (0.6), demonstrating that he is even struggling to perform in Turkey.

It has been a steady decline for a number of years now and remarkably, the winger is still only 29 years old, indicating that he has frittered away the peak years of his career at a variety of clubs where he failed to showcase his talents.

The Reds had a nightmare on a player who looked destined for the very top and this didn’t exactly help Rodgers' cause when it came to challenging for success during the 2014/15 campaign.

Lazar Markovic

Much of Klopp’s success as Liverpool manager has come down to his diligence in the transfer market, ensuring that expensive duds like Markovic are avoided.

Of course, mistakes do still happen, yet it wasn’t just the Serbian who failed to live up to the hype during their period at the Reds under Rodgers and his signing clearly put the club back a few steps, wasting vast amounts of money in the process.

Transfer update: Celtic and Rodgers eyeing move to sign new 23 y/o player

Celtic already appear to be at work ahead of the January transfer window, and a specific new midfielder appears to be on the Parkhead radar.

Celtic transfer latest…

The Hoops and Brendan Rodgers were busy over the summer when it came to new additions, with 10 new players brought to Parkhead – eight on permanent transfers and two on loan deals.

On the pitch, things have gotten off to an adequate start, with defeats in the Champions League group stages and Scottish League Cup compared to leading the Scottish Premiership by seven points after eight games. As a result, it looks as if there is still room for improvement in 2024, potentially starting in the January transfer window with further signings.

Korean football journalist Jason Lee shared a Celtic transfer update on Jeong Ho-Yeon in the last 48 hours, a player who Celtic were looking at signing during the summer. He stated that the Hoops are interested in the player and that Jeong is open to moving to Europe.

“Celtic have monitored Gwangju FC's Jung Ho-Yeon and he is of interest to the Scottish giants. Jung recently won military exemption at the Asian Games and would be open to a move to Europe.”

How many Asian players have Celtic signed?

Jeong is 23 years of age and appears to be at the peak of his powers with a career-high Transfermarkt valuation. (Jeong Ho-Yeon transfer value)

Capable of playing as a central or defensive midfielder, the South Korean helped his country win gold in the Asia Games and has spent his career with Gwangju either side of time at Dankook University. In total, Jeong has now made 66 senior appearances for his current employers, contributing to 10 goals in all competitions. Should a move to Celtic materialise, he wouldn’t be the first Asian player at Parkhead, with a number making the move to Scotland in recent years.

Therefore, Jeong could become the 10th senior midfield option on the books at Celtic Park in the New Year, making this a move to keep an eye on.

ICC apologises to Ireland, Scotland for Super-Over error

The teams played out the tenth tied T20I, but a Super Over was not contested to determine the winner in accordance with the ICC’s playing conditions

The ICC has said that match referee David Jukes and the on-field umpires Allan Haggo and WPM van Liemt erred on Sunday at the end of the dramatic tie between Ireland and Scotland in Deventer and confirmed that a Super Over should have been played to determine a winner, in accordance with the ICC’s playing conditions for T20Is.”The match officials misinterpreted the T20I playing conditions which prevented the Super Over taking place following a tied match,” an ICC spokesperson had said on Tuesday. “This was a genuine oversight for which the ICC offers its sincere apologies to both Scotland and Ireland. We have picked up the matter with the officials and will mitigate against this happening in the future.”Ireland’s Stuart Thompson scampered a two to long-on off the final ball of the match to level the scores in a chase of 186. It was the tenth tied T20I, but instead of contesting a Super Over to decide the winner, both teams shook hands and walked off the field.Under the ICC playing conditions for T20Is adopted on September 28, 2017, Law 16.3.1 reads: “If the scores are equal, the result shall be a tie and no account shall be taken of the number of wickets that have fallen. In the event of a tied match the teams shall compete in a Super Over to determine the winner.”However, representatives from both Ireland and Scotland told ESPNcricinfo after the match that they had been informed by tournament officials at the start of the tri-series that there would be no Super Over in the event of a tie.Had Scotland prevailed in a Super Over, it would have been just their second T20I victory over a Full Member. They had beaten Bangladesh by 34 runs in 2012, also in Netherlands. An Ireland win, on the other hand, would have kept them in contention to claim the tri-series title on net run-rate but a tie now means they can finish no higher than second place after losing their first two matches to Netherlands. Scotland need to sweep the final two matches against Netherlands on Tuesday and Wednesday at Amstelveen to claim the title while Netherlands need to win just one of the remaining two matches to clinch the tri-series.

Henry Brookes, the highly-rated 18-year-old Warwickshire pace bowler, has been ruled out for the remainder of the season with a stress fracture of his spine.Brookes had recently earned a maiden call-up to the England Lions squad during the tri-series involving West Indies A and India A and also spent time around the full one-day squad. He had taken seven wickets in five T20 Blast matches having bagged 21 in five Championship outings and also claimed nine in the Royal London Cup.Brookes will now have a period of rehabilitation with the aim that he will return to full training during the off-season.”Henry has been outstanding for us this year across all three forms of the game, so we’re obviously very disappointed to lose him for the remainder of our 2018 campaign,” Ashley Giles, Warwickshire’s sport director, said.”He’s an incredibly strong character for an 18-year-old and, whilst he is very disappointed to be out of action, he will soon be back working hard to ensure that he comes back stronger in the 2019 season.”

Newcastle chiefs make "brilliant" defender their number one transfer target

Newcastle United are believed to have found their No.1 target for when the January transfer window opens, according to a new update.

Newcastle linked with Phillips and Smith Rowe

The Magpies continued their impressive form with a blistering 4-0 win at home to Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, with things going superbly for them at the moment. Away from the on-pitch action, Newcastle also continue to be linked with a move for some top-quality players, as Eddie Howe potentially looks to improve his options in January.

English pair Kalvin Phillips and Emile Smith Rowe, of Manchester City and Arsenal respectively, are both seen as options, with the pair struggling for regular minutes at their clubs currently.

While Newcastle's squad is clearly as strong it has been in recent memory, with great options from back to front, having even more depth can only be a good thing come January, at a time when Howe will hope that his side are still fighting on all fronts, whether it be in the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup or EFL Cup.

While Phillips and Smith Rowe both represent exciting midfield targets, a fresh update claims that a player in a different position is the priority option right now.

Newcastle transfer news: Joachim Andersen

A report in The Sunday People, via Geordie Boot Boys, delivered a transfer update on Joachim Andersen, with the Magpies apparently now viewing the Palace centre-back as their No.1 January target.

They attempted to snap up the Dane in the summer, but failed to prise him away from Selhurst Park, and won't be perturbed by that, looking set to return for him after Christmas – they will have to pay a lot more than the £17m Palace paid Lyon for his services, though.

Andersen could be just what Newcastle are looking for in January, especially with key man Sven Botman suffering from injury problems of late. It will add much-needed depth at the back, with the Denmark international such an imperious star for Palace.

A dominant aerial presence who is also classy in possession, Andersen's statistics speak volumes about his ability on and off the ball, with 2.9 aerial duel wins per game coming his way in the Premier League this season, as well as an 88.8% pass completion rate for Denmark in Euro 2024 qualifying.

The 27-year-old has been lauded by former City and England defender Micah Richards in the past, too, with the Sky Sports pundit saying of him after a win over Brentford:

"[Joachim] Andersen, he has been brilliant again this season. He always organises from the back. You have got [Ivan] Toney and [Yoane] Wissa, two physical guys, and he dealt with them really well."

The fact that Andersen now knows the Premier League inside out is an added bonus, meaning he shouldn't take time to settle, and he would add real competition for Fabian Schar and Jamaal Lascelles, not to mention alleviating the issue of Botman potentially being unavailable at times.

+ CONFIRA A TABELA DO BRASILEIRÃO

Fresh corruption allegations against Australian players set to be aired

Cricket Australia has confirmed the allegations relate to “historical matches from 2011”

Watch – Alleged spot-fixing in the India-Australia Ranchi Test

Fresh allegations of spot-fixing against “current and former Australian players” are set to be aired by the television news network Al Jazeera in a follow-up to the investigative documentary aired earlier this year.Cricket Australia has confirmed the allegations relate to “historical matches from 2011″, a year in which the national team concluded an Ashes series, then took part in the 50-over World Cup, bilateral tours of Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and South Africa, then home matches against New Zealand and India. The chief executive James Sutherland said a CA integrity unit investigation had been conducted into the claims.Acknowledgement of the allegations arrived on the same day the ICC requested information from the public about the identity of an individual filmed in the original documentary, named as Aneel Munawar and claiming to be the organiser of spot-fixing for illegal Indian betting syndicates. According to the ICC, the follow-up programme is set to air recorded conversations involving Munawar and illegal bookmakers about spot-fixing arrangements.”We are aware of the new investigative documentary by Al Jazeera into alleged corruption in cricket,” Sutherland said. “Since the broadcast of Al Jazeera’s first documentary, the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit has been conducting a thorough investigation into the claims made, however this has been hampered by a lack of cooperation from Al Jazeera.”Although not having been provided an opportunity to review any raw audio or footage, our long-standing position on these matters is that credible claims should be treated very seriously, and investigated. Cricket Australia’s Integrity Unit have conducted a review of the latest claims by Al Jazeera, from a known criminal source, and, from the limited information provided by Al Jazeera, our team have not identified any issues of corruption relating to current or former Australian players.”We have handed all material over to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit to enable them to fully investigate and we will continue to cooperate with the ICC.”Alex Marshall, head of the ICC’s anti-corruption unit, said that attempts to properly identify Munawar had so far been unsuccessful. “We have identified every other person in the original documentary and have spoken to a number of them in connection with match fixing, including those who are not deemed to be participants under our Anti-Corruption Code,” Marshall said.”However the true identity of Aneel Munawar remains a mystery. He plays a significant role in the programme, yet enquiries with law enforcement and immigration sources have not identified or located him. As such we are appealing to the public or anyone from within the cricket family to contact us with any information that will lead us to identify and locate him. Police investigations often use such an appeal to locate people of interest and we are exercising the same approach.”The absence of any cooperation from the broadcaster has slowed the investigation, but to date we have made good progress in identifying people of significant interest including people already of interest to the ACU. We have been able to discount a number of claims made in the programme and continue to pursue other aspects. We will provide a full update at the conclusion of the investigation.”The ICC and Al Jazeera remain at odds over the network’s refusal to hand over to the governing body all raw footage recorded during their own investigations. One of the sticking points has been the fact that among Munawar’s allegations was the suggestion that the ICC’s anti-corruption unit itself had been compromised by financial links to illegal bookmakers and Indian crime figures.”We are aware that there is a second documentary in the offing, this time based on historical recordings between a fixer, suspected to be Munawar and bookies in India,” Marshall said. “As with the first programme, we will investigate any claims made in a full and thorough manner and we take any allegations of corruption, historical or contemporary, extremely seriously.”Based on what we already know, we have engaged the services of an independent betting analysis company to examine the claims made about particular matches. As with the first programme we have, and will continue to ask for the cooperation of the broadcaster. Access to the raw, unedited footage enables us to build a complete picture around the claims in the documentary and ensure our investigation is as fair and thorough as possible.”Sutherland outlined the significant education programmes undertaken by all players regarding their obligations to avoid corruption. “It is important to reiterate that Cricket Australia and the ICC take a zero-tolerance approach against anyone trying to compromise the integrity of the game,” he said. “We urge Al Jazeera to provide all un-edited materials and any other evidence to the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit.”Australian cricket is proactive with its sports integrity management and Cricket Australia’s Integrity Unit oversees and maintains all domestic cricket in Australia, including BBL and WBBL matches. In addition to this, prior to the start of each Australian season, all professional cricketers are required to participate in thorough anti-corruption education sessions before being eligible to compete in CA’s domestic competitions.”The Australian Cricketers’ Association chief executive Alistair Nicholson, meanwhile, called for full information sharing from the news network to help bring the matter to a conclusion. “The players have zero tolerance for any behaviour that may impact upon the integrity of the game,” he said.”However, enough is enough when it comes to people making unsupported accusations that have the ability to unfairly tarnish players’ reputations. Whoever is making these allegations should provide all the information they purport to have to the ICC to allow them to assess it.”
