West Ham Could Partner JWP With £32m "Real Powerhouse"

West Ham United are still looking to add another player or two to their squad before the summer transfer window closes next week.

David Moyes has spent the £105m raised via the sale of Declan Rice rather well, signing the likes of Edson Alvarez, James Ward-Prowse and Konstantinos Mavropanos, bolstering his midfield and defensive options in the process.

With European football gracing the London Stadium for the third season in a row, this hectic schedule will give the Scot a licence to pad out his squad further in order to cope with the demands.

With this in mind, they have made contact with a player who has recently shone in the Champions League…

Who will West Ham United sign next?

According to Football Insider, West Ham have made an enquiry over PSV Eindhoven midfielder Ibrahim Sangare as they look to snatch him from under the noses of Nottingham Forest.

Forest submitted a loan-to-buy bid of £21.3m for the player, even though he has a release clause of £32m.

Read the latest West Ham transfer news HERE…

This move may stretch out over the coming days as much will demand on whether they defeat Rangers and qualify for the Champions League group stages.

Sangare scored their first goal in the 2-2 draw at Ibrox in midweek and if they miss out for a second year in succession, the Dutch outfit may decide to cash in on the midfielder.

How good is Ibrahim Sangare?

Having lost homegrown talent Rice this summer, it was clear Moyes had to improve his midfield area, and the arrivals of Alvarez and Ward-Prowse have certainly been promising signings to that end.

The Englishman, in particular, has settled in well, grabbing two assists in his debut against Chelsea last weekend, and he could turn into one of the signings of the summer.

The former Southampton star could forge a wonderful partnership in the heart of the midfield with Sangare, especially given their differing abilities.

Ward-Prowse registered 13 Premier League goal contributions last term while creating nine big chances and averaging two key passes per game, indicating that he was an excellent attacking threat.

Sangare did only manage six goal contributions in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, but he added some defensive stability into the heart of the midfield, making 2.3 tackles per game while winning 5.8 total duels per game – a success rate of 57% – and he was only dribbled past 0.6 times per game, showcasing his impressive physicality.

He also ranks in the top 16% when compared to positional peers for aerials won (1.52) and clearances per 90 (1.86), showcasing his presence.

It’s no wonder he was hailed as being a “real powerhouse” by journalist Josh Bunting a few years ago, and he has since improved his game massively.

The 25-year-old can chip in with the odd goal and assist while also being solid in the defensive aspects of the game, and this could allow Moyes to create a partnership that could potentially lead them to more glory this campaign.

Mumbai started their quest to qualify for the knockouts by dismissing Tripura for 195 but stuttered in reply to end the day on 77 for 3 at Wankhede Stadium. The hosts lost Prithvi Shaw and Shreyas Iyer for one run each and Suryakumar Yadav for 30 even as Jay Bista kept their hopes alive with an unbeaten 43.Medium-pacer Akash Parkar – playing his fourth first-class match – capitalised on Mumbai’s decision to bowl with a maiden five-wicket haul. Dhawal Kulkarni dented Tripura with two early wickets before Parkar also struck twice and Bista effected a run-out to leave the tourists reeling on 96 for 5.Yashpal Singh halted the collapse with his 33. His 41-run stand with captain Manisankar Murasingh who went on to score 43 led the score past 150. But Parkar dismissed both Yashpal and Murasingh and was on a hat-trick in the 54th over to leave Tripura on 152 for 8. The visitors added another 43 for the last two wickets before Kulkarni took the last wicket to finish with 3 for 67 while Parkar had 5 for 32 from 16 overs. In reply, Shaw lasted only 12 deliveries as he was bowled by Rana Dutta and Murasingh had Iyer caught behind in the seventh over. Bista and Suryakumar counterattacked with a 50-run stand in less than 11 overs, Suryakumar handed a return catch to Abhijit Sarkar for 30 which made them stutter again.Led by Chandrakant Sakure, Madhya Pradesh’s pace attack ran through Odisha to bundle them out for 147 on the first day in Indore. Sakure’s four-for was assisted by three wickets from Puneet Datey and two from Ishwar Pandey, before MP ended the day on a stable 96 for 1, trailing by only 51 runs.MP’s bowlers cashed in on their decision to bowl as Datey struck on his sixth ball and Pandey in his third over. Only opener Ranjit Singh, captain Govinda Poddar and No. 5 Shantanu Mishra scored in double-digits as the MP bowlers did not allow any partnership to go beyond 44. Mishra resisted with 60 in over two hours even as Sakure troubled the middle and lower order. Odisha lost five wickets for only 33 runs to stutter to 138 for 9 before they were all out in the 53rd over.MP lost opener and debutant Aryaman Birla for a patient 16 off 67 when he was trapped lbw after an opening stand of 72 with Rajat Patidar. Captain Devendra Bundela and Patidar played out the next nine overs as Patidar did the bulk of the scoring with an unbeaten 72 with the help of nine fours.Swapnil Singh’s unbeaten 94 led the Baroda score past 250 while the Tamil Nadu medium-pacers helped remove eight batsmen in Vadodara. All of Baroda’s top five batsmen got starts with double-digit scores but only Swapnil converted and scored beyond 25. He was later assisted with a useful 42 from No. 9 Kartik Kakade, putting on 69 runs for the eighth wicket.K Vignesh started Baroda’s stutter by removing the openers and Washington Sundar dismissed Vishnu Solanki for 20. Deepak Hooda, the captain, then handed a return catch to Sai Kishore for 20. Baroda lost four wickets for 37 runs – two of those taken by J Kousik – leaving the hosts on 176 for 7. Swapnil and Kakade joined forces to steer them close to 250 before Kakade was run-out, but after hitting five fours and two sixes. Swapnil struck three sixes and 10 fours as he led the team to 254 for 8.

McCullum becomes latest to slam Shere Bangla pitches

Brendon McCullum said the two-paced nature of the pitch came in the way of an exciting contest after his team’s 43-run defeat to Dhaka Dynamites

Mohammad Isam06-Dec-2017

BCB

Brendon McCullum became the latest player to slam the quality of pitches at the Shere Bangla National Stadium during this season’s BPL. McCullum’s comments came after Rangpur Riders lost to Dhaka Dynamites by 43 runs on a two-paced surface where several deliveries stayed low or shot up.Tamim Iqbal and Mashrafe Mortaza had similarly criticised the ground after the Rangpur-Comilla Victorians clash on December 2, when Comilla needed nearly 20 overs to chase a 98-run target. The BCB has reportedly issued a letter to Tamim for his comments, telling him to appear before the chief executive after the tournament. The choice of these pitches has been quite perplexing, given that the BPL organisers prided themselves on the quality of players in this year’s competition. McCullum said that the nature of the pitch is curbing strokeplay, which is a major problem in a T20 tournament.”I thought it was a very poor wicket,” McCullum said. “I think there’s a lot of very, very good, world-class players in this tournament. People want to turn up and be able to watch some of the best players in the world which allows them to play exciting cricket. But I personally don’t think that was exciting cricket. I think the tournament can benefit from better surfaces than the one we just saw today.”McCullum even said that his own performance in the BPL – 152 runs at 16.88 – was due to the inconsistent nature of the pitches. “Everyone wants to score more runs, but I think you have seen over the years that my game is suited to wickets that are different than what we have seen so far. You can’t trust the bounce and pace of the wicket. We have seen balls that have gone through the top. Guys were telling me that pitches were very good couple of years ago.”It is very hard to come in to the tournament as a stroke-maker when you can’t trust the pitch. Of course, my performance needs to be better. But it will be nice to have a surface that is more consistent and has more pace about it. I will look forward to it.”McCullum also called for an improvement in the umpiring ahead of the knockouts. Rangpur were at the receiving end of two harsh decisions in their innings. First, Shahriar Nafees edged to the wicketkeeper, and the ball got stuck in the webbing of Jahurul Islam’s glove. Though it was not clear if it subsequently bounced, Nafees was adjudged caught behind with no substantial evidence to overturn the on-field soft signal. Two overs later, Johnson Charles was adjudged lbw though he seemed to have got an inside edge”When we batted, couple of decisions could have gone the other way. As the tournament gets into the business end, you need to ensure the umpiring is very good.”On a surface like this, any decision which doesn’t go your way can affect you. Johnson Charles today, who was looking in good touch, especially for a guy who hadn’t played in a while, he could have gone deeper into the innings.”

Everton In Talks For Defender Who Has "Great Positional Play"

After failing to earn a single point in any of their opening three Premier League games, scoring zero goals in the process, it's fair to say that Everton have a lot of work to do before the end of the summer transfer window.

The Toffees, if things continue in the current vein, will undoubtedly suffer the heartbreak of relegation from England's top flight for the first time in their history.

With a few days still left in the window, however, Sean Dyche and co are desperately scrambling for improvements, which could include a significant upgrade in the heart of his backline at Goodison Park.

What's the latest Everton transfer news?

So far this summer, Everton's focus seems to have been on improving in the final third, and this comes as no surprise. The Toffees scored the second fewest goals in the Premier League last season, with a meagre 35 to their name – a record only better than Wolverhampton Wanderers' tally of 31.

They are, at the very least, on their way to potentially solving their issues in front of goal, however, with the reported arrival of Udinese striker Beto.

Now, those in Merseyside look set to turn their attention towards a backline which has already conceded six goals in three games so far this season, including four against Aston Villa alone.

Attempting to address that leak, Everton have opened talks with Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach in an attempt to sign centre-back Nico Elvedi this summer, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

Signing Elvedi would also see the Toffees get one over on relegation rivals Wolves, who were keen on signing the Gladbach man earlier this summer, according to The Athletic.

As the window nears its end, though, it remains to be seen just how much the defender would cost those at Goodison Park.

Should Everton sign Nico Elvedi?

nico-elvedi-premier-league-everton-transfers

Compared to Everton's current options, 26-year-old Elvedi would hand Dyche a much-needed upgrade at the back, representing what would be smart business for the Toffees.

Compared to current Everton man Michael Keane, statistics suggest that Elvedi is a step over.

According to FBref, the Bundesliga defender outperformed the former Burnley man in several areas last season:

Interceptions

Nico Elvedi

Michael Keane

The fact is, any way that you look at it, Elvedi would play a major part in upgrading Everton's backline this season, as they look to secure Premier League survival after a woeful start.

Full of praise for the Swede, former Gladbach coach Daniel Farke said, via the Bundesliga website: "Nico has a strong aerial game and reads crosses very well."

Meanwhile, former Gladbach coach Dieter Hecking said: "Nico has great positional play and rarely commits any fouls."

As the transfer window comes to a close, it remains to be seen whether or not Everton can get a deal over the line, but talks have reportedly started.

Dyche will simply hope to assemble a squad capable of achieving survival before the window slams shut, especially after the start that his side have made to the season.

Crowds set to top 2 million during Australian summer

Massive crowds due to the expected success of the Ashes series and the limited-overs matches that follow combines with the continuing growth of the Twenty20 Big Bash League

Australian cricket is on course to top two million spectators at matches this summer, as the expected success of the Ashes series and the limited-overs matches that follow combines with the continuing growth of the Twenty20 Big Bash League.Including day one of the SCG Test, total Ashes attendance has now reached 729,527, putting the series in line to top the record crowds of 2006-07, when the preceding 2005 clash in England had raised interest in the ensuing battle. That was the only Australian Test series on record to have topped 800,000 spectators, with the previous Ashes series in 2013-14 being attended by more than 753,000 spectators. This summer’s increased attendances have been aided by the greater capacity of Adelaide Oval, and also the fact that each match so far has run into the fifth day. James Sutherland, the Cricket Australia chief executive, said the rising tide of crowds was being matched by the growth of the BBL, as the two contests feed off one another in terms of drawing people to cricket.Ashes crowds in Australia since ’90-91

*After day one of SCG

“It’s been a great series in terms of putting on an event, an Ashes series in our cycle of future tours programme is always a really important summer,” Sutherland told ABC Radio. “We’re heading towards crowds of over 800,000 for the Ashes Test matches. I think when we get to the one-dayers, T20s, we’ll be over a million.”Add another million for the Big Bash League, then for the first time ever we’re going to see attendances of over two million for cricket matches in Australia. So far so good, it’s been fantastic and I’d have to say the performances of the Australian team have been very pleasing as well.”This year we’re buoyed by the Adelaide Oval being at full capacity. It was only at half capacity last time, it’s one of the great assets of Australian cricket in that we’ve got these magnificent stadiums. We’ve got the Perth Stadium coming online for a game on the 28th of January, already pretty well sold out, and that in itself is just another way in which we can meet the demands of people wanting to come along to the cricket, which is fantastic to see.”Sutherland said that CA had seen evidence of Test match crowds becoming younger and more diverse, a shift he attributed to the use of T20 in general and the BBL in particular to bring new audiences to the game – a key plank of CA’s recently released strategy for the game down under. While there are inevitable grumbles about overlaying the BBL across the international summer, Sutherland has long been a proponent of co-existence rather than distinct windows.”The focus we have around T20 is bringing new fans to the game, particularly with kids, females and families, but at the same time what we’re seeing – and you only have to look around the SCG today – is kids graduating their interest into Test cricket,” Sutherland said. “Some people think that BBL is sort of counter to Test cricket, but it’s actually designed to be complementary. All of our research suggests that people still understand that the pinnacle of the game is Test cricket, the aspiration for young people is to play Test cricket, that’s the ultimate.”They’d love to play BBL, but to take it a step further and play at the highest level, and play for your country. I think this time of year I often say ‘more cricket is never enough’ and that’s been demonstrated by the way the Big Bash League has continued to grow. We also forget that Test matches are played in one place. They’re here for one week, we’re here in Sydney for one week, and that’s where it is, but at the same time, Big Bash League matches are being played in other parts of the country.”Previously in other summers gone by, we haven’t been able to feed the appetite of the Australian cricket community with other matches that they wanted to go to. We saw last night there was a game down in Hobart, great crowd, fascinating game, and again just another example of cricket being able to spread itself around the country.”As for the recent “poor” rating given the MCG for its lifeless drop-in pitch, Sutherland said the venue had been fortunate to miss out on the new ICC regulations – enforced from January 1 this year – that would have meant it faced a ban from international matches in the event of a second consecutive “poor” rating.”I think now with the new regulations that are in at ICC level, the consequences of that are quite severe,” Sutherland said. “The new regulations that came in on the first of January mean that once you’ve got a first strike, the second strike means you’ve actually got to have matches taken away from you. We’re not at that stage with the MCG, but it’s all about improvement and this is an opportunity to get better.”Ultimately it’s very disappointing to receive that rating. I think it’s probably a moot point as to where it lands and whether it was poor or the next category up, which was below average. But it’s an indicator either way – below average or poor – and it’s a rating we’re not comfortable with, and I know the MCC and the MCG aren’t happy with it either.”I think that will be the catalyst for us to work closely with them to respond and ensure we know and understand exactly what we’re looking for in an MCG pitch. And to define that, and to then make sure that’s rolled out with regularity and confidence.”
