Deal Close: Liverpool Set For Fresh Takeover Investment

There is still very likely to be new takeover investment in Liverpool, according to a report from reliable finance journalist Alex Miller, who states that a deal is expected to happen this summer.

Will FSG sell Liverpool?

The Reds are currently owned by FSG, or Fenway Sports Group to give them their full title. They're led by John W. Henry, who has been a key figure at the club since initially coming into power back in 2010. It means that the group have now been at the helm for 13 years – and as the years have drawn on, it's become more and more tumultuous for the owners at Anfield despite some great success on the pitch.

When Henry was revealed as one of the key figures behind the proposed European 'Super League' back in 2021, it led to outcry from fans. The idea was wholly opposed and one by one, the clubs began to drop out of the running in that venture. It led to an apology from Liverpool's owner, who grovelled for the "disruption" to the side.

Since then, FSG have decided to offer Liverpool to potential buyers, with the club put up for sale back in 2022. There has yet to be any new ownership deals agreed and Henry's consortium remain in charge at Anfield however, while for the past few months talk of new money coming in has died down. A recent report suggested that there was no interest in buying out FSG and that means, for now, they'll keep hold of the reins at the Premier League outfit.

However, a new claim from journalist Alex Miller today though has revealed that fresh investment in the club is potentially still on the cards. He stated that a deal to give the club a boost is "expected" be done "over the summer" and added that there are a multitude of options for the side to consider when it comes to finding this new investment.

Miller said: "Re LFC investment. Well-placed sources maintain that several investment options remain on the table for the club… and that a deal is expected to be completed "over the summer"…"

Who could Liverpool sign this summer?

If there was indeed fresh investment, that could potentially mean more money for transfers, and that would be a welcome boost for Jurgen Klopp.

The Reds have been tailing players such as Ryan Gravenberch, Khephren Thuram and Levi Colwill to name just a few, and fresh funds could help them land some of their targets.

No deal has been confirmed just yet, but it does appear that a move could potentially happen this summer and hopefully boost the transfer coffers for Klopp and new sporting chief Jorg Schmadtke.

New players free of scars – Smith

Following his side’s seven-wicket win over South Africa in Adelaide, Steven Smith acknowledged contributions from the new players in the team

Daniel Brettig in Adelaide27-Nov-2016Australia’s captain Steven Smith believes his dramatically changed team have found a way forward in their first Test since coming together, a rousing seven-wicket victory over South Africa in which the Queensland left-handers Usman Khawaja and Matt Renshaw played key roles. As well as Australia bowled, first-innings runs are going to be what defines the success or otherwise of Smith’s side. To that end, Renshaw’s effort to see through a tough period on the first evening followed by Khawaja’s subsequent masterclass in dogged batting dictated much about how the match panned out. Tellingly, Smith said it helped that three new batsmen were free of the “scars” of the preceding five Tests. Not surprisingly, Smith wants to see more of the same.”I thought we responded really well,” Smith said of the challenges posed by the pink ball and floodlit conditions. “We had three batters in the top six who had no scars or anything like that so they were able to come in and play their natural game, which was nice. I thought we adapted really well.”I thought Usman was outstanding to come in under a pretty tricky situation on that night, opening the batting and get through that difficult period in the night and then bat the whole next day. It shows a lot about his character and what he’s willing to do. I thought he played beautifully out there for seven hours to wear them down and score a big hundred. I guess that’s the sort of template we’re looking for in our top six batters.”Renshaw’s place will be a matter for some conjecture whenever Shaun Marsh returns to full fitness, but there was much to like about the way he played his game, tested the patience of the bowlers and put the highest premium on his wicket. Smith was enthused by what he saw.Matt Renshaw’s temperament was praised by his state captain, Usman Khawaja, and Australia captain Steven Smith•Cricket Australia/Getty Images

“I thought he played quite well. He knows his game very well,” Smith said. “Obviously he got beaten a lot, but he wasn’t chasing the ball. He was keeping his line. South African had some quality bowlers that nip the ball quite a bit so you can’t afford to follow them. Something I thought Usman did particularly well in the first innings.”He [Renshaw] played the line and let the ball that nips go past the bat and he didn’t seem fazed by it at all. He just got on with the job and made them bowl to him. When they got a bit straighter he picked them off and that’s the way he goes about his game and it was nice for him and Petey [Handscomb] – two guys on debut – to be there at the end.”Khawaja is Renshaw’s state captain, and spoke with a similar level of warmth for someone who has set himself up with a Test match method in mind. “He’s got a really good temperament, he’s got a really good head on him,” Khawaja said. “What you saw today or during this Test match was one bit of Matt Renshaw’s game. He does have a very good temperament, he’s got a good defence he plays the ball well and plays it late.”But I think hopefully you’ll also be able to see the other part of him because I’ve seen him take down some attacks. I’ve seen him come up against a few spinners and really heave them for some big sixes and really change gears. He’s 20 years old, playing Test cricket for Australia. I think he’s doing great for a 20-year-old. I’d think he was doing great even he was 25 years old. He’s doing pretty well.”Added to the way Australia batted was the team’s best fielding display for some time. In this, Smith singled out another debutant in Peter Handscomb for snaffling Faf du Plessis in the gully on the third evening. “I felt a bit of a switch straight away in energy and presence around the group in our first training session out here at Adelaide Oval,” Smith said.”Everything felt like it was running smoothly and when we got our chance to get out into the field we had good energy and presence about ourselves. That helps in the field as well, we were able to take some pretty good catches in this Test match, a part of our game that has probably been a bit disappointing for a while now.”It works hand in hand, when you have that sort of presence and energy you’re able to take chances like the one Petey took to open the game up. It’s been great to have these guys come in, create that energy and have that hunger and character about them to want to win and fight.”Looking at the wider picture, Smith was understandably delighted to have snapped a five-match losing run ahead of the next home series against Pakistan. After two weeks of fire and brimstone, there are now some green shoots of new growth to be optimistic about.”I’m very happy, it’s much better to be on this side of the fence,” he said. “A little bit bittersweet, it was a disappointing series, we were outplayed in the first two Test matches by South Africa, but I’m really proud of the way that the team came back in this game. There were some new players who came in, they stood up and we showed some fight and character. That’s what I want us to do and I’m really proud of the way we stood up.”I think we can grow from what we’ve done in this Test match. It’s been a great start for a young group that have come together so we’re going to have to continue to work hard as a group to get to where we want to. Obviously they [Pakistan] are going to be another tough opposition. I think they have been playing some very good cricket. They’ve got some quality players so we’re going to have to be at our best if we want to get on top of them this summer as well.”

Leeds Making Inroads To Buy "Interesting" £17k p/w Ace At ER

Leeds United are keen on bringing in West Bromwich Albion midfielder Jayson Molumby this summer as the Yorkshire club try to supplement potential midfield departures, according to journalist Dean Jones.

What's the latest transfer news involving Jayson Molumby?

According to The Sun's Alan Nixon on Patreon, Molumby has been identified as a target for Leeds this summer as they prepare for life in the Championship.

Former England international Carlton Palmer has tipped the £17k-a-week earner to be a success at the Whites if he does swap the Hawthorns for Elland Road in the off-season, stating in an interview with Football League World:

“Jayson Molumby would be a fantastic signing for Leeds. He’s still only 23 years of age, already capped for the Republic of Ireland 20 times. He will provide energy and tenacity to the Leeds midfield. [He’s a] genuine box-to-box midfield player, who also will chip in with goals, eight goals from midfield last season. Would be a very, very good signing for Leeds United.”

Molumby was a crucial component of Carlos Corberan's West Brom outfit in 2022/23, registering four goals and four assists in 47 appearances across all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

There is a possibility that Corberan and the £17k-per-week Molumby both pitch up at Leeds United, with the latter in contention for the managerial post at Elland Road, as per Football Insider.

Speaking to Football FanCast, journalist Jones thinks that Molumby would be a solid addition for Leeds United as they look towards competing in the English second tier.

Jones told FFC: "I think he also has the nous to be good enough for what they need straight away from the off in the Championship. I think that'll be really interesting, especially at a time when they're looking to move on from McKennie and probably Aaronson and, unfortunately for Leeds, probably Tyler Adams as well."

What midfielders could Leeds United part ways with this summer?

In light of their relegation from the Premier League, several individuals in midfield could leave Leeds United this summer, which may have prompted their interest in Molumby.

According to The Daily Mail, Leeds United enforcer Tyler Adams could be set to depart Elland Road, with Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Nottingham Forest all keen to offer the American a return to the top-flight.

Leeds United's Tyler Adams

90min also understand that Brenden Aaronson has a release clause of £25 million in his contract at Leeds United and may be another casualty this window.

FootballTransfers report that Jack Harrison is attracting interest from Everton and could fall by the wayside due to having a relegation release clause worth around £16 million.

It is apparent there could be some major changes made in the Leeds midfield this summer which could certainly lead to a number of new faces being forced to come through the doors over the coming months.

Shoulder sidelines Mitchell Marsh ahead of India tour

Mitchell Marsh has been ruled out of the rest of the ODI series against Pakistan, while Chris Lynn and Mitchell Starc will miss the third match in Perth

Mitchell Marsh’s fitness is under a cloud mere hours after he was named in the India tour squad, as a troublesome right shoulder has forced him to be withdrawn from the remainder of the ODI series against Pakistan. Victorian allrounder Marcus Stoinis was named his replacement for the Pakistan series.*On a night when Australia’s selectors also had to withdraw Chris Lynn from the team that will fly to Perth for Thursday’s third match due to an ongoing neck problem, the news that Marsh’s shoulder issues had worsened left the selectors scrambling for options not only for the ODI series but also mulling the shape of the India touring party. In the wake of Pakistan’s six-wicket win at the MCG, Australia’s captain Steven Smith said that Marsh’s present inability to bowl at top pace was a considerable problem leading into the India tour. Last year he was an impactful change bowler on the tour of New Zealand but his pace has trailed off in the intervening months, bottoming out to the mid-120kph range on Sunday evening.”He has got an ongoing issue with his shoulder and we’re giving him some time off to get that right,” Smith said. “He could be a very key player for us in India and he hasn’t been able to bowl the speeds he would like. We know how important air-speed is in India, especially with the ball reversing, so we need to be able to get that right.”Victoria’s Peter Handscomb, who has scored two centuries and two fifites in his four Tests, was added to the ODI squad for the third match as a replacement for Lynn.Mitchell Starc was rested from the team for Perth, while legspinner Adam Zampa, unused in the first two matches, was released to play for the Melbourne Stars in the BBL on Tuesday night before flying west on Wednesday.Following the win at the MCG, Smith was critical of his batsmen, believing they had been too rushed in trying to assert themselves over the first two matches. “It’s been pretty ordinary, our batting, aside from Matthew Wade in Brisbane,” he said. “It’s something we have to look at in Perth, we need to start forming some partnerships to get the scores we’re after.”We’ve been in a bit of a rush to be honest. A few players coming back from the BBL, but I guess there’s no excuse for the Test players, but we’ve been in a bit of a rush and we need to just rein it in a little bit, give ourselves a chance and form some partnerships. We’ve got the power in the sheds to go hard at the back end – we know we’ve got plenty of power, but most of them have been back in the shed by the time we need them.”*06.30 GMT, January 16: This article was updated after Marcus Stoinis was selected.

Major Update On Harry Kane’s Tottenham Hotspur Future

Tottenham Hotspur striker Harry Kane could be subject to another bid from Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga club "working hard" to secure his signature, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

Is Harry Kane leaving Tottenham?

Kane has reportedly reached an agreement in principle to move to Bayern Munich, with his agent holding talks with the German champions in recent days, however their £60m bid was swiftly rejected by Tottenham.

The offer falls way short of Spurs' valuation of their talisman, with CBS reporter Ben Jacobs recently tweeting: "Spurs have rejected Bayern's €70m plus add-ons offer for Harry Kane. Daniel Levy in no mood to sell, and certainly not for under £100m."

Although his contract is set to expire next summer, Levy is driving a hard bargain, and there have been reports the 29-year-old could be willing to let his current deal run out, before leaving the club on a free transfer in 2024.

At the moment, however, Bayern appear to be undeterred in their pursuit of the England international, and transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport he believes they could come back to the negotiating table soon:

"Information coming out of Germany is that Bayern have been working hard behind the scenes to understand the personal drive and ambitions of Harry Kane, and after weeks of exploration around his situation at Spurs, they had enough confidence to step forward and begin the bidding process to try and sign him.

"They know how difficult a deal like this might be, but they need a striker and want full clarification around the chances of getting him before they move on to their other prime targets Randal Kolo Muani and [Victor] Osimhen. The first offer is low but that just makes me think they will be back with another bid."

How much will Harry Kane cost?

According to The Telegraph, Tottenham may choose to cash-in on the Englishman, should they receive an offer of £80m from an overseas club, which indicates Bayern may not be too far off, leaving Levy with a huge decision to make.

It would be a risk to keep the £200k-per-week striker at the club for another year, in the hope that he is persuaded to sign a new contract, as losing him for free would be a real blow.

Tottenham's Harry Kane

That said, even if Spurs do receive big money for Kane, it is extremely unlikely they will be able to find anyone capable of replacing him, considering his fantastic goal-scoring record, finding the back of the net 280 times in a total of 435 appearances for the club.

As such, Levy should hold firm for the time being, and only sanction the forward's departure if a bid comes in that is simply too good to refuse.

Ireland, Afghanistan hoping for Test seal of approval

The two teams are hoping their performances at ICC’s limited-overs world events and the Intercontinental Cup first-class tournament can push their case

Peter Della Penna02-Feb-2017

Ireland have won four Intercontinental Cup titles, including three successive ones between 2005 and 2008•ICC/Saleem Sanghati

Ireland and Afghanistan are looking forward to a pivotal round of ICC meetings in the hope that they come out the other side as Test-playing countries. Among the topics up for discussion in front of the ICC board this weekend is the structure of Test cricket, and whether the five-day format should be opened up to more than the current ten Test sides. Specifically, it is Ireland and Afghanistan who are knocking on the door and waiting to see if the Full Member boards open up that possibility.Prospects for such a development have become brighter in recent times. Ireland’s inter-provincial competition was awarded first-class and List A status in October 2016. Afghanistan’s application to have first-class status granted to their multi-day domestic competition, meanwhile, is due to be examined at the Chief Executives Committee meeting on Thursday.Afghanistan recently declared their ambitions of achieving Full Member status. Their premier national competition has five teams compared to Ireland’s three-team elite structure, while Afghanistan’s domestic crowd numbers run well into the thousands, helping to satisfy the most nebulous aspect of ICC criteria: proving an established “cricket culture”. As such, Afghanistan’s administrators are confident that at the very least their domestic competition will be awarded the same first-class status as Ireland’s, and perhaps more.”We’ve submitted a proposal for Test status and in February they will decide about it,” Atif Mashal, chairman of the Afghanistan Cricket Board, told ESPNcricinfo in a recent interview. “We had a very positive meeting with ICC. They were very happy for Afghanistan cricket, the development and sustainability of the cricket, the introduction of youngsters to our team.”Now we have many new names in the team and they are performing very well. Introducing new boys to the team is a plus thing because it is becoming a young, sustainable and well performing team. We have already reserved a place for Full Membership and after the criteria is passed by the full [ICC] board and executive committee, we are ready for Full Membership.”For Ireland and Afghanistan, it may help to argue for Test status without necessarily attaching Full Member status to it•AFP/Getty Images

Results at international level will also matter. At each of the previous three 50-over World Cups, Ireland have notched wins against Full Members while Afghanistan added the scalp of West Indies at the 2016 World T20 to their stretch of dominance over Zimbabwe. Both countries are already part of the 12-team ODI qualification table and have demonstrated consistently positive results in the highest multi-day competition available to them, the Intercontinental Cup.Since entering the competition in 2009, Afghanistan have won 14 games, lost once – to Ireland in the 2013 I-Cup final – and recorded four draws, including in their first-class debut match against a Zimbabwe XI in 2009. They beat Scotland in the 2010 final to claim the title in their first appearance at the tournament, and in the current tournament table are in second place behind Ireland. It’s a record that proves Afghanistan are ready for Tests, ACB chief executive Shafiqullah Stanikzai told ESPNcricinfo this past summer.Ireland won three I-Cup titles from 2005 to 2008 when the competition was crammed into a two-year cycle. They won again in 2013 by beating Afghanistan in the final and could have won more titles had the format not been rejigged to stretch out seven group matches over three years. Overall, since 2004, they have won 24 matches and drawn ten while losing only two. One of those losses was to Scotland in the first year of the competition, the other to Afghanistan in 2009. They have been unbeaten in their last 12 matches, which includes four wins in four matches in the current tournament that began in 2015.Despite demonstrating their cricketing prowess, each country’s fate may have just as much to do with their administrative nous off the field. Part of that is garnering support from other Full Members for inclusion. While the two-tier structure proposal was put on the back burner at the ICC annual conference, momentum may be growing for a dual-conference structure, thereby maintaining a semblance of competitive parity. In order to avoid rocking the boat with the ICC’s 10-team financial distribution model linked to Full Membership, it may also help to argue for Test opportunities without necessarily attaching Full Member status to them. One official believes, however, that nothing definitive will emerge until after the ongoing Intercontinental Cup. “One of the key objectives is to try and uncouple Test cricket from Full Membership,” the official said. “I don’t think that is going to be determined through the new membership of the Test cricket until following this latest Intercontinental Cup competition.”

Old rivalries renewed as Stokes prepares to face his demons

ESPNcricinfo previews the first ODI between West Indies and England in Antigua

The Preview by Andrew Miller02-Mar-2017Match factsMarch 3, 2017
Start time 0930 local (1330 GMT)Big PictureAfter the rigours of a winter in the subcontinent – and with little to show for their efforts following gruelling losses in all three formats against India – a spring sojourn in the Caribbean, three ODIs in the course of a fortnight on tour, has the distinct flavour of a rest cure. Nothing, however, is quite that straightforward for one-day cricket at the moment, as West Indies’ absence from this year’s grand jamboree amply testifies.Could it be that West Indies’ failure to qualify for this summer’s Champions Trophy is the wake-up call that cricket in the Caribbean has long needed? This time last year, of course, they were beating England in thrilling fashion in the final of the World T20, but that emotional triumph was achieved, quite literally, in spite of the WICB, which remains defiantly at loggerheads with so many of its star players, as epitomised by its failure to select the man of that match, Marlon Samuels, for these three games. But at the same time, the cosy assurances that West Indies cricket would forever be invited to the sport’s biggest gatherings has been shattered, and already their new coach, Australia’s Stuart Law, has admitted that qualification for the 2019 World Cup is the team’s over-riding priority. They are currently ranked at No. 9 in the world, one place outside the automatic slots, and it’s fair to say that West Indies’ record against England in the coming six months will make or break their ambitions. They have these three games, plus five more in the summer, ahead of September’s qualification cut-off, and there’s no time like the present to get their late push up and running. And what of England, the renaissance team of world white-ball cricket? Their stunning coming of age since the 2015 World Cup has been dissected ad nauseam but, two years down the line, Eoin Morgan’s men can no longer get away with surprising people with their potential. In particular, despite their fighting efforts in a historically heavy-scoring ODI series in India, their ambitions faltered because of the shortcomings of their bowling attack. These three matches – plus five more against Ireland and South Africa in May – will be critical to their fine-tuning process. They go into the series with a glut of absentees. David Willey, Mark Wood, Jake Ball and Reece Topley are among the seamers who might have been expected to press their claims in these three games, but injury has struck them all down and instead the stage is set for the likes of Liam Plunkett, Steven Finn and Tom Curran – newly inducted into the squad after a hefty journey from the heart of Sri Lanka.Form guide(last five completed matches, most recent first)
West Indies: LLTWL
England: WLLWLIn the spotlightSometimes the best place to hide is in plain sight, out in the middle of a cricket field. That is rather how Ben Stokes feels, after admitting his discomfort at talking about his status as England’s most newly-minted cricketer. And yet, even without the small matter of USD 2.16 million in his back pocket, following his stunning acquisition by Rising Pune Supergiant in the IPL, Stokes was destined to be the talk of Antigua, given what happened to the last four balls he sent down against West Indies, in the World T20 final in Kolkata. And, even if that experience had all been a bad dream, we’d still have Stokes’ last visit to the Caribbean to look back on, and that broken hand courtesy of a punched locker in Barbados. In an otherwise low-key series, his presence alone adds an element of vital intrigue. It takes two to tango, however, and in the maroon corner, Carlos Brathwaite is revving up to resume his heavy bombardment against an England bowling line-up that – for all their strides as a team – has been under the cosh in recent contests. At least, that’s how the narrative is meant to pan out. Unfortunately for Brathwaite, life hasn’t been quite that simple since Kolkata. Expectations, both personally and from West Indies’ fans, have been through the roof in the past 12 months, much like those four sixes had been. “Unfortunately, it went downhill quickly,” he told the Daily Mail. “Because of what happened that night, people expected things and I guess, for a brief period, I expected them as well. It became a negative.” He has the chance, over the course of these four matches, to reset his ambitions, and those of his team.Team newsKieran Powell, back in West Indies’ one-day squad for the first time in three years, could pick up where he left off by facing England in an ODI at Antigua, just as he did on his last appearance in March 2014. If selected, he is likely to open the batting with Evin Lewis, who cemented his claim to a top-order berth with 148 in a thrilling run-chase against Sri Lanka in November.West Indies (probable) 1 Evin Lewis, 2 Kieran Powell, 3 Kraigg Brathwaite, 4 Shai Hope (wk), 5 Jonathan Carter, 6 Carlos Brathwaite, 7 Rovman Powell, 8 Jason Holder (capt), 9 Devendra Bishoo, 10 Ashley Nurse, 11 Shannon GabrielThough Ball remains with the England squad, he didn’t look comfortable during training and is unlikely to be risked following his knee injury. Alex Hales is likely to sit out as well as he fine-tunes his recovery from a broken hand, while Tom Curran is still in transit and won’t be in the frame until the second match at the earliest. Therefore, Sam Billings is expected to open with Jason Roy, with Jonny Bairstow squeezed out of a strong middle order. Plunkett and Finn could both feature, along with both the front-line spinners, Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid.England (probable) 1 Jason Roy, 2 Sam Billings, 3 Joe Root, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Jos Buttler (wk), 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Moeen Ali, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Liam Plunkett, 11 Steven Finn.Pitch and conditionsIn a development that would make Antigua’s local heroes Curtly Ambrose and Andy Roberts weep, Caribbean wickets tend to be pretty slow and low these days. Nevertheless, England’s captain, Eoin Morgan, admitted he had been surprised by the amount of grass still in evidence on this surface. With a 9.30am start in the offing, there may be some early assistance for his seamers if he manages to call correctly and bowl first.Stats and trivia Stokes’ locker punch in 2014 was not the wisest shot he has ever played, but dare one say it, his frustrations were justified. In his last three ODIs in the Caribbean (all in Antigua, in fact) he made a grand total of nine runs in three innings, and took no wickets in six overs. Brathwaite’s struggles to live up to his Kolkata heroics have been telling. A grand total of 248 runs at 16.53 in 18 subsequent innings, with his solitary half-century coming in his one-off Test appearance against India in Antigua. Having struck four sixes in as many balls in Kolkata, he’s managed 11 more in 301. It is technically an away fixture for England although, in keeping with recent Test tours of the Caribbean, the visiting support is likely to be vast. Of a ground capacity of 13,000, some 7,000-8,000 tickets have been sold to England supporters.Quotes”I know the media will bill the series as Carlos Brathwaite v Ben Stokes, but it’s West Indies v England.”
“We do have one eye on the Champions Trophy, getting a reasonable squad together before then and one idea of nailing down our team.”
