Lloris emerging as weak link in Tottenham Hotspur team

Over the last few seasons Tottenham Hotspur have established themselves as regular top-four finishers, with just the lack of silverware preventing them from being considered an elite Premier League club.

Mauricio Pochettino has transformed his young side into challengers, but in recent matches, a chink in the armour has appeared.

Hugo Lloris, who has been widely regarded as one of the best goalkeepers in Europe, has had some shaky displays in between the sticks.

In a 3-1 victory over Chelsea, the Frenchman made a costly blunder while trying to clear the ball that had been crossed into the danger area.

The club captain came off his line in an attempt to punch the ball away, but fluffed it completely and Alvaro Morata scored the Blues’ only goal of the game.

The following week, Lloris looked unsteady again as he played a part in Stoke City’s goal by hitting the ball straight at Mame Biram Diouf in a failed clearance.

The 31-year-old’s errors were not highlighted as strongly due to Tottenham winning both matches, but he had nowhere to hide on Saturday against newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City.

In a 3-1 triumph for Pep Guardiola’s side, Lloris managed to make three saves and only cleared the danger on two occasions.

The biggest mistake came 24 minutes into the contest when he rushed off his line to bring down Raheem Sterling on the edge of the box.

Despite the foul being outside of the area, the referee awarded a penalty, which was slotted home by Ilkay Gundogan.

Lloris could also have done better to prevent City’s third goal, as even though he initially made a save, the keeper pushed the ball back into Sterling’s direction and the former Liverpool attacker punished him.

Suggesting that Tottenham splash the cash on a new keeper would be unwise given that the Frenchman has made some match-winning saves this season.

However, Tottenham fans have noticed Lloris slipping in recent matches, and he needs to overcome this blip in order to prevent the defenders feeling uneasy around him.

Newcastle and Arsenal have more in common than their fans might think

Newcastle United and Arsenal face each other on Sunday but the landscapes at the respective clubs look very different.

The Gunners are a modern superclub with a plush new stadium, boasting World Cup winners Mesut Ozil and Per Mertesacker and looking to get back into the Champions League via the Europa League.

Meanwhile, the Magpies returned to the top flight this season with one thing on their mind – survival. While a European run for Arsenal has been a means to an end, it would be a genuine adventure for Newcastle.

They are in the same league literally, but figuratively they are operating on different planes. They also have no shortage of problems, and neither set of fans is particularly enamoured with their respective boards.

Yet, the solutions appear to be very different. Arsenal fans think that a lot of their problems would be solved by sacking Arsene Wenger. A culture of mediocracy has set in from board level, but while that has not gone unnoticed – the recent Emirates boycotts show that – it is the Frenchman who receives the bulk of the ire.

Meanwhile, in the North East, the manager is almost the only aspect of the club that the fans are convinced is right.

The natives could not be happier that Rafa Benitez in charge of Newcastle United and he is seen as the bedrock on which progress must be built.

Everything else around Benitez – the board, the standard of the players and the ownership situation – needs changing but for as long as he’s around, Newcastle fans can believe that a better future is around the corner.

The opposite is true at Arsenal. Wenger’s prolonged presence in the dugout snuffs out any hope that the changes that need to be made from top to bottom will continue to be pushed back.

Even three FA Cups in four years, reasonably regular Champions League qualification and attractive football only provide sticking plasters. Wenger is a legend at Arsenal but only his removal from the situation at the club – as painful as it may be – can start the wheels of change in North London.

Wenger’s removal – whenever it comes – would be a symbol that the powers that be are prepared to move away from the current turmoil and towards a genuine assault on England’s summit.

Benitez’s arrival – and subsequent commitment to Newcastle in the Championship – was a similar catalyst for change and cause for optimism.

The unrest is comparable at the two clubs but at one, the manager is the root of all the rot. At the other, he is the only beacon of hope.

Man United fans want Antoine Griezmann alongside Alexis and Lukaku next season

Atletico Madrid attacker Antoine Griezmann impressed and scored in his side’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal in the first leg of their Europa League semi-final tie at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday night, and Manchester United fans have urged their club to sign the Frenchman, rated at £90m by Transfermarkt, to play alongside Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku in a front three next season.

The versatile forward has long been linked with a move away from the La Liga club, but he extended his contract with the team from the Spanish capital by another 12 months last summer, and has gone on to score 27 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side.

Meanwhile, the Red Devils are still yet to find a real solution to their right-sided issue with the likes of Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata playing there this season, and Jose Mourinho could look to make an addition in that position during the summer.

Man United supporters, who also want Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich to solve their right-back issue, were quick to have their say on Griezmann’s latest display via social media, and while one simply said “sign Griezmann”, another said “Alexis – Lukaku – Griezmann. Front three next season, make it happen @manutd”.

Tottenham move for Immobile and Milinkovic-Savic hints at change of formation

According to reports in the Sunday Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur are ready to spend more than £100m to sign Lazio duo Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Ciro Immobile this summer.

What’s the word, then?

Well, the Sunday Mirror says that the pair have been heavily scouted by the north London outfit in recent weeks, and while they wouldn’t come on the cheap, Spurs feel that they can afford them by offloading some of their fringe players at the end of the season.

The Sunday Mirror says that the players that could go are Toby Alderweireld, Danny Rose, Mousa Dembele, Moussa Sissoko and Victor Wanyama, whom Tottenham fans on Twitter have been discussing the futures of, with the money used to strengthen the Tottenham squad before they move into their new £750m home.

The report adds that signing either Milinkovic-Savic or the 6ft 1in Immobile would be a coup, with the former being watched by several of Europe’s biggest football clubs, and the latter able to offer a strong alternative to Harry Kane up top.

How good have the duo been this season?

They have been excellent.

Striker Immobile has scored a remarkable 41 goals in 45 matches for the Serie A outfit, as well as providing a further 11 assists, while Milinkovic-Savic has found the net on 12 occasions and picked up nine assists, even though he has often been deployed as a central midfielder.

The Serbia international has shown how useful he can be at both ends of the pitch, and he has great ability on the ball, too.

Meanwhile, his Italian teammate is obviously a great finisher, but he is strong in the air too and is no stranger to scoring goals with his head.

[ad_pod ]

Would they be good signings for Spurs?

They certainly would be.

Milinkovic-Savic in only 23 years of age and looks to have a massive future ahead of him, while Immobile certainly looks as though he could be more of a success with the north London outfit than Vincent Janssen and Fernando Llorente have been.

Will they get them?

It’s difficult to say.

They will certainly have to pay through the roof to get Milinkovic-Savic, which they may not be willing to do, while they would have to convince Immobile that he could still get regular minutes on the pitch even though he would likely be Kane’s back-up.

Considering the number of goals he has scored this season that is going to be difficult to do, and it would perhaps make more sense if Pochettino has a plan to play both of them together in a new formation with two strikers.

Tottenham fans bash Liverpool after topping them again

Tottenham fans are mercilessly mocking Liverpool, after their side finished above the Merseysiders for the eighth time in nine seasons.

Tottenham looked to have ruined their chances of a third place finish on Sunday when they fell behind to Leicester, but “destiny still arrives” as some of their fans are saying.

Liverpool won 4-0 against Brighton, meaning Spurs had to win to ensure a third place finish, and they did just that thanks to Harry Kane’s superb cultured finish to win the game 5-4.

Liverpool of course have a Champions League final to look forward to, and their European efforts have certainly hampered their Premier League form, but nonetheless Spurs fans are having the last laugh.

The two clubs have formed somewhat of a new rivalry over the incidents at Anfield earlier this year, when Harry Kane had two attempts from the penalty spot to help the visitors to a 2-2 draw.

Liverpool finished above Tottenham in 2013/14 when they fell short to Manchester City in the title race, but excluding that season the Reds have not topped Spurs since the 2008/09 season.

Liverpool fans enjoyed Mohamed Salah grabbing the golden boot over Kane, but Tottenham fans are certainly enjoying themselves too, and some of the best Twitter reactions can be found below…

Pochettino commits his future to Tottenham Hotspur, fans react

Tottenham Hotspur can consider themselves a regular top-four side in the Premier League having finished inside the top bracket in the last three seasons.

Mauricio Pochettino has been a major reason for the club’s surge up the standings.

The Argentine has shaped a young team into capable trophy challengers, but they are not quite at the level that they wish to be.

It has been a decade since the North London outfit won a piece of silverware, and they cannot compete with the financial clout of Manchester City and Manchester United.

Moving into a brand new stadium, though, will certainly bump their status among England’s elite.

Concerns have been raised over the futures of a number of first-team players, but the fans were able to breathe a sigh of relief on Thursday when Pochettino signed a new contract.

It is safe to say that the supporters were overjoyed by the news.

PFA Fans’ Player of the Season award – Premier League nominees

It’s been another fine season in the Premier League, one that Manchester City have made unforgettable with their incredible dominance over the rest of the division. But away from the best team in the English top flight, this term’s champions, and onto the best individuals. Here are the six Premier League nominees for the PFA Fans’ Player of the Season award…

Raheem Sterling

It’s been a real coming of age season for Raheem Sterling, one that’s seen him double his previous best scoring return for a single Premier League campaign with 18 goals and grab eleven assists as well. In fact, he’s one of just three players in the whole division to reach double figures for both strikes and setups. More than just output though, the England international has been a relentless presence, completing 2.3 dribbles per ninety minutes.

Eden Hazard

Injuries may have prevented him from making his first Premier League start until September but Eden Hazard has nonetheless enjoyed another strong season as Chelsea’s most talismanic presence. The Belgium international finished the term with twelve goals and four assists, while completing the most dribbles of any Premier League player and ranking sixth for key passes per match.

Harry Kane

It’s incredible to think a young Harry Kane was once dubbed a flash in the pan. The Tottenham striker may have missed out on this season’s Golden Boot but he’s now scored at least 20 goals for the last four Premier League campaigns, this term bagging his highest total to date of 30 in 37 appearances. The England attacker took 5.4 efforts at goal per ninety minutes this season.

Kevin De Bruyne

Manchester City’s chief creator, Kevin De Bruyne finished up top of the Premier League’s assists charts for 2017/18 with a stunning 16 setups – alongside an impressive eight goals. More than statistics, however, he’s been the roaring engine of Pep Guardiola’s title-winning team, the man ripping through the midfield and distributing to their potent forward line.

David De Gea

The Player of the Season award is usually all about attacking players, but David De Gea’s form at the opposite end of the pitch has been impossible to ignore. He lifted the Premier League’s Golden Glove award with a whopping 18 clean sheets and produced an overall save success rate of 79%. In terms of single performances, his heroic display against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium in which he made 14 saves particularly comes to mind.

Mohamed Salah

The real surprise story of the 2017/18 season, Mohamed Salah was inconsistent at best during his short time with Chelsea but has transformed into an absolute superstar throughout his debut campaign at Liverpool. The Egyptian’s set a new record for goals scored in a 38-game season, an illustrious 32, and supplied his teammates with a further ten assists. Few players across the entire of Europe have matched Salah’s form this term and he’ll surely be nominated for 2018’s Ballon d’Or.

Liverpool fans want to sign Ryan Sessegnon after his play-off performance

Liverpool fans are eager to sign Ryan Sessegnon after his performance in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Saturday.

Sessegnon was again at the heart of a Fulham victory, assisting Tom Cairney’s goal with a sublime through ball that split the Aston Villa defence and sent the Cottagers up into the English Premier League.

Still just 18 years of age, the £22.5m-rated winger is undoubtedly one of the finest talents in the country and will no doubt be a wanted man when the transfer window opens.

His performance capped off what was been a wonderful season for the teenager, during which he has scored a fantastic 16 goals and assisted eight more. Three of those direct goal contributions came in the play-offs, demonstrating he has a big game mentality.

Reds fans believe he would be a great option for Liverpool next season and can progress massively under the guidance of manager Jurgen Klopp.

They took to Twitter to share their thoughts on a potential move…

Tottenham fans desperate to sign NDombele

According to France Football, Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Amiens midfielder Tanguy NDombele this summer as Mousa Dembele prepares to depart.

Dembele is widely expected to leave Spurs this summer despite a very impressive 2017-18 campaign with Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Indeed, the Belgium international does not want to sign a new contract with Tottenham, and as a result, the Premier League team will be in the market for at least one new central midfielder ahead of the 2018-19 season.

Spurs are currently being linked with Amiens star NDombele, and it would be fair to say that the Tottenham fans want the deal to take place.

The 21-year-old provided seven assists in 35 Ligue 1 appearances on loan at Lyon last season, and a number of clubs are believed to be considering a move.

However, Dembele’s imminent departure has reportedly accelerated Tottenham’s interest.

That said, Lyon are believed to have the chance to sign NDombele permanently this summer, which could make it very tough for Tottenham.

Liverpool fans want club to move for Martial after agent drops exit hint

One of the big transfer stories of this window could be related to Manchester United star Anthony Martial, particularly if he ends up at Liverpool.

There have not been any reports suggesting that the Merseyside outfit would consider making a move for the Frenchman, but the fans seem interested after the player’s agent dropped a big hint about his client’s future.

While speaking to RMC Sport, Martial’s representative Philippe Lamboley revealed that the attacker, who moved to Old Trafford from Monaco in 2015, “wants to leave” the club.

He went on to say that the “time has come” for his client to move on and has suggested that the Red Devils “do not really want to keep” him due to the fact that the two parties have not reached an agreement with regards to a contract extension.

[brid autoplay=”true” video=”255574″ player=”12034″ title=”Watch Four World Cup myths debunked”]

Martial struggled to hold down a regular place in Jose Mourinho’s team last season, starting just 26 games in all competitions.

Tottenham Hotspur have been heavily linked with a swoop for the attacker, but Liverpool fans think their club should make an audacious bid.
