George Bailey delivered a glowing appraisal of David Warner’s leadership following Australia’s two-wicket win in Dambulla, in which Bailey had led the chase. It was Warner’s first international in charge, and though his batting continued to ail him, his attack proved penetrative in the defining first half of the match.Australia’s seamers took two early wickets, and though Dinesh Chandimal and Tillakaratne Dilshan put up a 73-run second wicket stand, the middle and lower order could not muster substantial partnerships. Sri Lanka were all out for 226 in the 50th over.Bailey has plenty of experience as a leader, having captained Australia in 57 limited-overs matches. He said Warner was a good leader because, among other things, he typified the kind of cricket Australia wish to play.”I think Davey’s a natural leader,” Bailey said. “He’s always been a leader in terms of the way he plays the game. A lot of the things we talk about as a team – that Darren Lehmann has always talked about – driving the game, playing the game aggressively, and taking the game on, you’re talking about Davey Warner when you do that.”The conversations that I was privy to when he was talking to the bowlers, he was really clear and direct. He keeps things simple and they’re all pretty good things to have as a skipper. We were taking wickets, so that always keeps you happy as a captain. We took most of our catches, so it’s a nice welcome for him. I think he’s a really natural leader, I think it suits him.”Bailey was among those seen in regular conversation with Warner through Sri Lanka’s innings, along with Matthew Wade and Aaron Finch. Warner’s ideas, he said, were instrumental in keeping Sri Lanka to a score which Australia felt was very gettable on the Dambulla surface.”As much as anything, in my opinion, the on-field discussions are just so Davey can verbalise what’s going on his head,” Bailey said. “I know that the times I’ve captained, I’d much rather have too many ideas coming at me than when no one is coming up at all, because that’s normally the sign things aren’t going your way. I don’t think we’ll come out with anything too radical. It was more just letting Davey talk through what his plans were, and they were pretty much always on the money.”Australia’s chase had been floundering at 44 for 3 before Bailey took control of the innings. He put on 72 runs with Travis Head and a further 81 with Matthew Wade, on his way to 70 from 99 balls. In that knock, Bailey used the sweep and reverse sweep as liberally as any Australia batsman has done throughout the tour.”I’ve been practicing my sweep and reverse sweep,” he said. “You just need options here, don’t you? There are some clever bowlers in that team and you need to be able to mix things up and change the field a little bit when you need to.”I love the challenge of batting here. It’s very different to playing in England. It’s very different to playing at home. I find it a great thrill to be able to test yourself and to come up with new shots and to come up with different ways to combat the different things that are thrown at you.”Bailey has had a better year with the bat in 2016, than he has had in either of the two previous calendar years. He has hit 520 runs at an average of 37.14 since January, and has contributed in each of his innings this series.”I don’t know what to put it down to – maybe I’m just hitting my peak at the right age,” Bailey said of his improved output this year. “I just try to relax a bit more and enjoy it. I probably have a better balance off the field. I know what it feels like to be out of the team, or on the outer of the team. I know the worst-case scenario if I don’t score runs is I’m back to that feeling, so I’m just trying to make sure I enjoy every second I can.”

Leeds Could Land "Incredible" 4-3-3 Boss

The wait goes on at Elland Road to see just who will be named as Leeds United’s next permanent manager, with the position currently vacant following the departure of Sam Allardyce following his short-term stint in charge.

The experienced Englishman had been the final man in charge amid what proved a wholly turbulent campaign for the Whites, with the Yorkshire side succumbing to relegation after seeing both Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia dismissed from the dugout.

With the newly-relegated side now preparing for life in the Championship next season, supporters will no doubt be keen to see a quick resolution to the club’s search for a new head coach, with a protracted pursuit likely to hamper any early transfer business.

According to Football Transfers, one man who is already in talks regarding the vacancy at Leeds is out-of-work boss Steven Gerrard, with the 43-year-old – who is also on the radar of Leicester City – having been without a job since being axed by Aston Villa back in October.

While that short stint in charge at Villa Park – in which the Englishman won just 13 of his 40 games at the helm – may have somewhat soured his reputation, the Liverpool legend’s previous success at Rangers should spark excitement among the Leeds faithful.

Should Leeds appoint Gerrard?

The former England international worked wonders during his first managerial post at Ibrox, having led the Old Firm giants to the Scottish Premiership title in the 2020/21 season following what was an “incredible season” for the club, according to pundit Alex McLeish.

That triumphant year saw the Gers go unbeaten throughout the entire league season, having ultimately finished 25 points clear of Celtic at the summit to end their rivals’ hopes of securing what would have been a historic tenth successive league title.

Having initially taken on the role in the summer of 2018, it evidently took time for the up-and-coming coach to truly make his mark in Glasgow, with that gradual build-up to success having been described as “kind of similar to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool”, in the words of McLeish.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp

That likeness to the German tactician is showcased by the fact that the ex-Borussia Dortmund also took time to lead the Anfield outfit to glory, having won his first piece of silverware – the Champions League – in 2019, just under four years on from replacing Brendan Rodgers in the dugout.

The 55-year-old has also led the Merseysiders to a Premier League title and a handful of domestic honours since then, establishing himself as “head and shoulders above everyone” – alongside Pep Guardiola – due to his coaching prowess, according to pundit Jamie Redknapp.

It is interesting to note then that Gerrard – who, like Klopp, typically utilises a 4-3-3 formation – has been earmarked as a potential successor to the current Liverpool boss in future, with former teammate Djibril Cisse hailing him as a “great leader” and someone he would “love to see” take charge of the Reds.

As far as Leeds are concerned, the appointment of Gerrard may take time to pay dividends – as was the case at Rangers – although the 113-cap ace could potentially emulate the success of Klopp in becoming a successful, long-term figurehead at Elland Road.

'Williamson not a bad 200th scalp' – Ashwin

‘I constantly compete with myself to get better’ – Ashwin

R Ashwin has chosen AB de Villiers’ wicket in Nagpur last season, getting Kane Williamson twice in this Test and dismissing Kumar Sangakkara repeatedly in Sri Lanka last year as some of the special memories in his journey to becoming the second-fastest man to 200 Test wickets. He could have been the fastest, but was denied by rain in two Tests in the West Indies. Ashwin reached the landmark in 37 Tests, while Australia’s Clarrie Grimmett took 36 matches. Before Ashwin, Harbhajan Singh was the fastest Indian bowler to reach the milestone, in 46 Tests.”Maybe Clarrie Grimmett was a nicer man than I am,” Ashwin joked. “I think it just had to be that way. It’s fine, honestly. There are a lot of positives to look at and lots of good memories that I’ve created over the last five-six years of international cricket, and to look back and feel sore about it [the rain] is not the right way to go about my career. So, I’m just happy where I am right now.”The memories of getting Sangakkara and de Villiers, among the best of all time, and Williamson, who is arguably the best Test batsman going around, have to be really special among those memories. “Kane Williamson is not a bad 200th scalp,” Ashwin said. “There are quite a few good wickets that I’ve had over a period of time. AB de Villiers in Nagpur was very well set up. Kane Williamson in this Test match in the first innings, I thought was a very, very good ball. Kumar Sangakkara in Sri Lanka… These are some special memories that I’ll always cherish in my cricketing career. I hope I can create more and more in the future.”Sangakkara played the last two matches of his Test career against India in 2015. Ashwin got him all four times, caught at slip twice, and at silly point and gully once each. He got de Villiers with a carrom ball in the second innings of the Nagpur Test. And in this Test, after consistent pressure on Williamson in the first innings, the batsman went for a cut against the turn, but the ball turned in sharply to beat the bat. Williamson had done almost everything right to adjust to the turn, but was beaten. For his 200th wicket, Ashwin trapped Williamson on the back foot and had him lbw.Ashwin had to overcome a difficult period when he was dropped after the 2013-14 Johannesburg Test. India had failed to bowl South Africa out in four-and-a-half sessions in the second innings at the Wanderers, after which Ashwin missed seven out of India’s nine Tests, all outside Asia. During that period, Ashwin rediscovered his game, fine-tuned his action and came back rejuvenated.”That phase is very, very important,” Ashwin said. “It taught me a lot, and more so, it emphasised that I should be working on my skill. And my skill has definitely been talked of ever since. This game, especially, I have a corn on my finger and I haven’t bowled a lot in the last 25 days. I’m not very happy with the way it has come out so far. I just hope that I can do better in the series.”Ashwin has amassed 18 five-fors and four ten-wicket match hauls so far, and has more Man-of-the-Series awards than any other Indian. After the day’s play, Ashwin said: “The last 80-100 wickets have been very, very good for me. Ever since I came back from Australia last year, and went to Bangladesh, I think that’s when I really started enjoying my bowling. I knew what I was doing very clearly, started planning my dismissals, knew exactly how to set batsmen up. It has been a wonderful journey over the last couple of years, I just hope it keeps going for some time.”One of the adjustments Ashwin made in this game was to go over the wicket to left-hand batsmen. He explained the move. “The way the New Zealand left-hand batsmen play is very different to the other left-handers,” Ashwin said. “They don’t plonk their foot across, they plonk it right down the wicket, try to play inside out a lot. It will work on this wicket because it doesn’t have enough bounce, turn and carry. So it will work on this wicket. Just trying to change a bit of angles, and our targets were better today.”So perhaps from around the wicket, Ashwin felt that the batsmen were not coming close enough to edging good balls, and were also succeeding in playing inside out to the ones that might not have been as threatening. Ashwin chose to speak more about his skills rather than detractors. Before the start of the season, Harbhajan had advised India to not ask for rank turners.”We don’t have enough time to read about all these things,” Ashwin said. “To be very honest, what kind of wickets we are playing is not something that [Ani] Kumble or [Virat] Kohli can go and roll wickets or water it. What we get is what we play on. Obviously, we are looking to play good cricket and it is not going to take the sheen off. It is very unfortunate that people don’t realise it. But it is very important that we enjoy the brand of cricket that we play, and win is a win. Savour it. If a Test match in England gets over in two days, nobody talks about it. Why in India, though?”

Celtic Manager News: Hoops Shortlist 4-2-3-1 Manager

An update has emerged on Celtic and their plans to find a replacement for recently-departed manager Ange Postecoglou this summer…

What's the latest on Rik de Mil to Celtic?

According to Football Scotland, the Hoops have added Rik de Mil to their list of targets as they attempt to draw up a shortlist of coaches to take over at Parkhead.

The report claims that the club have been keeping tabs on the Club Brugge assistant manager and are joined by a number of European and Belgian teams in doing so.

It states that the 41-year-old is one of a number of candidates being considered by the Scottish giants with Brendan Rodgers, Enzo Maresca and Graham Potter named as other possible contenders for the job.

Would Rik de Mil be a success at Celtic?

Majority shareholder Dermot Desmond could uncover a dream replacement for Postecoglou by swooping for De Mil as could be a big success in Scotland.

The Club Brugge assistant, who Football Scotland claim is a "serious prospect with a top coaching career ahead of him", was given an opportunity to shine as the first-team manager for the first time earlier this year after Scott Parker was relieved of his duties and made an instant impact.

He won four of his six regular season games in the Pro League after the English head coach won two of his ten matches in the Belgian top-flight, but that was not enough to stop the club from appointing ex-Hoops boss Ronny Deila.

De Mil, who typically deploys a 4-2-3-1 formation, described his Brugge side as a "team putting forward pressure, trying to pin back its opponent high upfield."

Club Brugge assistant manager Rik de Mil.

He added: "There's still room for improvement when it comes to transition. Play it out a bit better at some moments, would have resulted in more goals. Those are some working points, absolutely, but I did see a dominant team in possession, finding space more easily."

These comments suggest that the Belgian tactician wants his team to dominate games and press high up the pitch to push the opposition's defence back and prevent them from building attacks of their own, which is akin to the way that Postecoglou set up his Celtic side with his high-pressing attacking style.

De Mil's limited experience as a senior manager means that it would be a gamble for Desmond to appoint him but the same could have been said about the club's last boss as the Australian had never managed in Europe but the 57-year-old ended up winning five trophies in two seasons at Parkhead.

Therefore, this could be a risk worth taking for Celtic as the talented Belgian has shown promise in his short managerial career to date and has a style of play that the supporters could connect with given the similarities to Postecoglou's philosophy of dominating with a high press.

England face tricky decision over resting Woakes

England face a late selection quandary over the inclusion of Chris Woakes in the team for the second Test against India

George Dobell in Visakhapatnam16-Nov-2016England face a late selection quandary over the inclusion of Chris Woakes in the team for the second Test.Woakes, who bowled immaculately in the first Test, was described as “fine to play” by England captain Alastair Cook. But the England captain also admitted Woakes was suffering from a “bowling niggle” and from the “wear and tear of bowling”.As a result, England are considering rotating him with a view to injury prevention and to ensure he is fit for the final three Tests of the series. If Woakes is rested, England have to decide whether to pick James Anderson, who has not played a game since August, or recall Steven Finn or Jake Ball.”It’s a real tough one,” Cook admitted. “We know what we’ve got coming up but the way the 11 guys played in the last game was outstanding. So it’s either the rotation policy or do you stick with what we’ve got. That’s the decision we’ve got to make.”Woakes is the one we’re looking at because of the amount of overs he has bowled over the last six or seven weeks. He was outstanding in Rajkot, so we will have to make a decision. He has just got a bowling niggle really. Just the normal wear and tear of bowling, so he’s fine to play.”Under normal circumstance, England would have no hesitation in drafting Anderson back into the side. But Cook is clearly nervous about risking him as part of a three-man seam attack after such a long period out of the game.”Jimmy has come over and done really well in the nets,” Cook said. “He’s confident as he can be in terms of his skills and where he’s at but he hasn’t got miles in his legs.”The last time he played in a game was in August. So you’re weighing up that against guys who have been out here for seven weeks and also against Chris Woakes. It’s going through our heads what we are going to do.”While Woakes is keen to play and had a brief bowl in training, it could be that Finn is the beneficiary of a decision to rest him. Finn has continued to bowl well in the nets – not always a precursor to bowling well in a match – and troubled most of England’s batsmen.Whatever England conclude, they go into the second Test in greater confidence than they went into the first. Their ability to post a score of over 500 in Rajkot – whatever the state of the pitch and the state of India’s fielding – has infused the batting line-up with confidence, while the success the bowlers had in slowing India’s rate of scoring in the first innings and putting them under pressure in the second has provided a similar boost. Crucially, England’s spinners lost little in comparison to their Indian counterparts.”The way we played was particularly pleasing over the five days,” Cook said. “We were relentless in all aspects of the game. There were a couple of dropped catches here and there, that does happen in the game, but apart from that we were excellent with the ball and in the field.”There were three first-innings hundreds to get more than 500 and, when the pressure was on in the second innings and it looked like we were the only side who could lose the game, Haseeb Hameed played really well. A lot of things went well for us and that can only give us confidence that we can compete with India and put them under pressure.”If England do go on to win the series, it may be that we look back and reflect on the defeat in Dhaka as a key moment. That loss – and the manner of it, with England losing 10 wickets in a session – was such a shock that Cook believes it acted as a catalyst to their improvement.”They were incredibly tough wickets to bat on,” Cook said. “It doesn’t matter whether you’d played 130 Tests in Asia with a good record or your first game. It was incredibly tough for the top order with the same balls skidding and spinning. If you look at mine and Gary Ballance’s [first-innings] dismissals we both received exactly the same deliveries with exactly the seam release out of the hand. One hit leg stump and the other got caught [by the keeper]. That was the challenge facing us.”It didn’t make us bad players of spin. But what it did do was focus a real intensity in our training after those 10 wickets fell in a session. It makes people not re-evaluate their game but really concentrate, particularly in those first 30 balls of your innings.”We had a really good couple of days in Mumbai and when conditions were slightly more favourable for batting and the hard work we’d put in paid off. Now we have to do it again. Everyone starts on nought now.”It appears the toss will once again be vital. While the pitch looked oddly damp on Wednesday and was given a further sprinkling of water, the groundsman has stated he expects it to start turning on the second day. The relatively lush outfield and fresh-looking square will again do little to generate reverse-swing. While there may be a little in the surface in the first session, batting fourth is likely to prove especially demanding.’The toss is important,” Cook said, “but in Mumbai the last time we played here we lost the toss on a turning wicket and we outplayed India. So it is important but it doesn’t mean you can’t win the game if you lose it. If you go back to our last game in Rajkot, our worst bit of the game was that first 25 minutes when we showed a bit of nerves. Everyone here says the toss is important but if we lose it, it will just be another challenge we will have to overcome.”

Broad to have scan on right foot

Stuart Broad is to have a scan on his right foot after feeling more pain during the second day’s play in Visakhapatnam

The results of the scan on Stuart Broad’s right foot is unlikely to be known before Saturday•AFP

England fast bowler Stuart Broad is to have a scan on his right foot after feeling more pain during the second day’s play in Visakhapatnam.Broad left the field on the first day complaining of discomfort in both his wrist and foot. While the wrist issue was simply a cut that is considered more an irritation than a injury, the foot problem is more of a concern.Broad managed only 36 overs during the Test tour of India in 2012 after sustaining a foot injury. The results of the scan are not likely to be known until Saturday. While he was able to bowl on the second morning, sending down four overs with the second new ball, England’s medical team have decided to investigate the problem further. Broad bowled impressively in Rajkot, his 100th Test, although he only took one wicket; he was rested for England’s previous match, against Bangladesh in Dhaka. The news will be a worry to an England attack that contains James Anderson, who requires careful handling as he makes his way back from injury, and Chris Woakes, who was rested from this Test with what the management described as a minor “niggle” in his knee. The other seamers in the squad are Steven Finn and Jake Ball, though ESPNcricinfo revealed a week ago that the team management had been considering adding Sam Curran to the tour party. Curran is aged only 18 but, as a left-arm swing bowler – and highly promising batsman – he would add some variety to the England attack.Even if the scan clears Broad of any serious injury, it seems most unlikely that he will be considered for the third Test, which starts in Mohali on November 26.

Rangers Can Ditch Roofe For ‘Aggressive’ £5m Machine

Glasgow Rangers manager Michael Beale has made a head start to his transfer business at Ibrox, signing Jack Butland, Dujon Sterling and Kieran Dowell on free transfers, and they have all been tied down before the transfer window even opens.

Unfortunately, the Light Blues don’t have a mass fortune to spend in the transfer market, meaning free transfers will potentially make up the bulk of the incomings and any other business will largely be assisted by the 42-year-old moving on some deadwood in the squad that is surplus to requirements.

The likes of Scott Wright and Jon McLaughlin are likely to be sold, while Antonio Colak, who only joined last summer, could also depart. Another name who should be let go is Kemar Roofe, as the striker could still bring in a decent transfer fee.

He only played six times last season, struggling with a variety of injury issues which kept him out for 35 matches in total, hardly justifying his £26k-per-week wage.

There is no doubting his quality, with the 30-year-old netting 36 times in just 78 appearances, yet, having another season where he barely features will be a waste of precious funds which could be spent elsewhere, especially with the Ibrox side looking for new strikers following the departure of Alfredo Morelos.

Could Rangers sign Nikola Krstovic this summer?

The Gers were linked with Krstovic as far back as February according to Football Insider, with the same outlet claiming the club had scouted the 23-year-old on ‘several occasions’ with a view to signing him this summer, although a reported fee of between £4m-£5m was being demanded by his club, Dunajska Streda.

Beale looks like he is about to agree a deal to sign Sam Lammers from Sampdoria, however, his goal record isn’t nearly as good as the Streda hitman, netting only twice all season compared to the 26 goals the Montenegro international has scored.

He obviously knows how to find the back of the net on a regular basis, having scored a total of 81 club career goals and with five caps for his country too, he has emerged on the international scene, further underlining his capabilities.

A goal every 117 minutes in the Slovakian top flight last term was better than all but one player in the Gers side who played over five Premiership matches, suggesting that he could be a regular scorer under Beale if he maintained his current form.

Rangers centre-forward Kemar Roofe.

Journalist Josh Bunting had plenty of praise for the 23-year-old last year, saying: “Nikola Krstović scoring again for DAC 1904, I honestly can see a big enough side take a punt on him sooner rather than later, only 22 but what a talent he is and he’s showing it in Europe this season. He’s aggressive and he’s clinical. Has all the attributes you want in a striker.”

Roofe underwent surgery back in March to sort out his hip injury, however, there is no set timeline on his return to the first team picture and perhaps Beale may be best moving him on in order to launch a move for a player such as Krstovic this summer.
