Pellegrino shouldn’t be blamed for mistakes from players who should know better

Southampton looked to be on course for their first Premier League win since November and a much-needed three points when they led Watford 2-0 at half-time at Vicarage Road last Saturday, but like on so many other occasions in recent weeks and months, they failed to hold on to their advantage and ended up dropping two points.

The under pressure Mauricio Pellegrino would probably have been the most annoyed and frustrated person that his side couldn’t hold on, and he is coming under increased scrutiny from the fans and the board with the club lying just one spot and one point above the top flight relegation zone with 15 matches left to play.

While the Argentine’s team selections, tactics and substitutions often leave a lot to be desired and the 46-year-old has deservedly received stick because of them, the Saints players have to take their fair share of the blame too.

Having come through the first 13 minutes of the second-half against the Hornets unscathed, club captain Steven Davis picked up the ball around 30 yards from his own goal and had plenty of time to make a pass forward or even to the side.

However, the experienced Northern Ireland international instead turned backwards and dawdled on the ball before it was stolen off of him, and Andre Gray ended up putting the ball into the back of the net.

Having only tasted victory on four occasions in the Premier League this season – with two of those coming in the first month of the campaign – the players were clearly nervous and throughout the last half-an-hour they gradually retreated further and further towards their own goal as the introduction of Troy Deeney and Stefano Okaka saw Watford go more direct.

Although the equaliser came in controversial circumstances as Abdoulaye Doucoure put the ball into the net with his hand, it came and it counted after had been left free in the penalty area to convert.

It was another experienced Saints player in Ryan Bertrand that lost his concentration to allow the Frenchman into the penalty area unchallenged, and the south coast outfit were forced to settle for a point that looked for so long to be three.

It isn’t the first time a mistake or lapse of concentration has cost Southampton this season, either.

In the 2-1 defeat against Crystal Palace at St Mary’s earlier this month Saints were leading in the 68th minute, but they left James McArthur all alone at the far post to score the equaliser before Luka Milivojevic netted the winner from outside the box.

Previously, Maya Yoshida had failed to mark Huddersfield Town striker Laurent Depoitre in the 1-1 draw against the Terriers before Christmas as the Belgian was allowed to head home, while Olivier Giroud was allowed to also score with a free header after Dusan Tadic failed to prevent a cross from Alexis Sanchez as Southampton surrendered another two points against Arsenal earlier in December.

Yes, Southampton’s tactics haven’t helped in any of these cases as they have chosen to sit back rather than try and find another goal, but the players certainly need to be held accountable as well as the manager for some of the errors they are currently making.

Senior players like Davis, Bertrand, Yoshida and Oriol Romeu – who was so good last season but hasn’t reached the same level this time around – need to step up, while Sofiane Boufal and Mario Lemina need to show their talents more than they currently are when they are on the pitch.

Southampton desperately need to start picking up wins in their quest to move away from the bottom three, starting when they welcome in-form Tottenham Hotspur to St Mary’s on Sunday.

Pellegrino’s men were disappointing in the 5-2 defeat against Spurs at Wembley on Boxing Day, and if they play like that again this weekend they will be in for another comprehensive loss.

It certainly won’t be an easy game when the Saints players come up against Harry Kane, Son Heung-Min, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen, and they can’t afford to make errors or lack awareness given how good the movement of the aforementioned quartet is.

If Saints do suffer a heavy defeat and put in a poor showing the manager will likely be on his way, and while that may please some fans they must realise that the players have let themselves and the supporters down too, and they need to be held accountable for their part in what has been such a disastrous season.

Southampton shouldn’t abandon their transfer philosophy to mirror West Ham’s

Southampton lie above the relegation zone on goal difference following a disastrous season to date, and with only seven home matches – including games against Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur – and nine away games to come, it is clear that they need to strengthen their squad during the January transfer window in order to survive.

The £75m sale of Virgil van Dijk to Liverpool will allow them to do that, but Saints fans may be surprised at some of the names they have been linked with bringing to St Mary’s before the window closes at the end of this month.

Those supporters have become used to the club adding names such as Sadio Mane, Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg, Mario Lemina and Cedric Soares – younger players they may not have heard of but who have the potential to develop with the south coast outfit and increase their re-sale value – to their squad.

However, that doesn’t appear to be the case for Southampton in January if there is any truth to the latest transfer rumours, which is perhaps something to do with the predicament they find themselves in right now.

Maybe the time to take risks is over – for this window at least – and already in the last couple of weeks Saints have been heavily linked with moves to bring Arsenal’s Theo Walcott – who left the club to join the Gunners in 2006, Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge and West Ham centre-forward Andy Carroll to St Mary’s.

Those are certainly not names that the south coast outfit would have targeted in years gone by, and it suggests either a change of tact or smacks of desperation as they look to try and get some experienced Premier League players into the club to try and steer them away from danger.

It would certainly be a step away from their usual transfer philosophy with Walcott, Sturridge and Carroll all 28 years of age and perhaps with little re-sale vale once their potential and respective contracts with Southampton came to an end.

That said, if they could get the former duo on loan deals until the end of the season that would be less of an issue, but they would also need to be careful in that instance that they had players that cared for and were committed to do everything they can to help the south coast outfit.

From a fans’ point of view, they will have looked at the transfer business of a team like West Ham in recent years and not been too envious as they bring in older players with little chance of making money when they move on.

Even in the last couple of years, the Irons have brought players like Alvaro Arbeloa, Jose Fonte, Pablo Zabaleta and Javier Hernandez to the club, and while the former has already left, if the latter trio all see out their contracts the east London outfit will probably lose out financially at the end of the day.

It is a model that Southampton haven’t really followed since they returned to the Premier League in 2012, and they shouldn’t really start now.

Yes, the likes of Walcott, Sturridge and Carroll are experienced English top flight players who can score goals at this level, but all would come with their own injury problems that have plagued their careers.

The south coast outfit are in trouble now but they shouldn’t panic, because if they wanted to bring two of the three players to St Mary’s on a permanent deal it would likely cost them a significant amount, even if all of the aforementioned players’ contracts are due to run out in 2019.

Those Premier League clubs know that Southampton have money in the bank after selling van Dijk, and as well as getting more value for their money abroad, the club would also encounter teams that are a little less aware of their financial clout and unwilling to demand ridiculously high fees.

While Saints need new blood and quickly, they shouldn’t abandon their principles when it comes to transfers and should continue to follow the model that has been so successful in the past to drag them out of trouble, rather than going down the West Ham route that has so often been criticised in the past.

They may find themselves in a real bad place right now, but throwing cash around on the wrong sort of players is not the right method to get themselves out of it.

De Laet leaves Aston Villa on loan, fans react

Throughout the transfer window, fans eagerly refresh their social media feeds to discover if their club have secured a new signing.

Aston Villa made an announcement on Tuesday, but it was centred around an outgoing rather than a new face to add to the squad.

Ritchie de Laet has left the Midlands outfit to join Belgian side Royal Antwerp on loan until the end of the season.

The 29-year-old has been part of the Villa fold since 2016 when he joined from Leicester City.

This season under manager Steve Bruce, the defender has struggled for game time, making just nine appearances in total for the Championship outfit.

Now, De Laet will hope to rack up more minutes back in his homeland at the club where he played during his youth career.

Villa fans have been tweeting their reactions to the transfer, with some hoping that he returns, while others are more focused on who could be coming through the welcome gates.

Carragher criticises Arsenal’s January transfer business

Former Liverpool captain Jamie Carragher has taken a swipe at Arsenal’s January transfer business, claiming that the Gunners failed to address ‘the same old problems’.

Arsenal broke their transfer record to bring Borussia Dortmund forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the Emirates Stadium on deadline day.

Aubameyang followed former Dortmund teammate Henrikh Mkhitaryan to the club, with the Armenian joining in the deal that saw Alexis Sanchez move to Manchester United.

Pundit Carragher, however, is astounded that head coach Arsene Wenger did not look to improve defensively during the winter window.

Indeed, the Gunners lost 3-1 at Swansea City in the Premier League on Tuesday night, with a couple of defensive errors costing the capital outfit once again.

Carragher has claimed that Arsenal ‘might actually get worse’ with their new January arrivals because more focus will be taken away from the defensive side of the match.

Carragher told Sky Sports:

“My big problem with the transfers is the same old problems, we saw that midweek at Swansea. You just think, you are continually buying attacking players but seeing the old problems.

“The problems are not going away, and they’re not going away because of what’s happened January. They may actually get worse because there are more attacking players on the pitch.”

Arsenal will look to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they welcome Everton to the Emirates Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Newcastle United fans are disappointed with Shelvey after horror miss

Newcastle United picked up a point away from home in the English Premier League on Saturday but will feel they should have secured an important win after Bournemouth came from 2-0 down. The Magpies had rushed to to a comfortable lead at the interval thanks to a Dwight Gayle double but failed to finish the game off despite wonderful chances in the second half.Ayoze Perez and Jonjo Shelvey both missed opportunities to make it 3-0 before Bournemouth scored twice in the last ten minutes to rescue an unlikely draw.[ad_pod ]Fans were upset with Shelvey’s miss in particular, believing he should have buried a Christian Atsu squared ball. With the Cherries scoring shortly after, it was undoubtedly the turning point in the match.Just two points above the relegation zone, it’s a miss that could prove pivotal in the context of Newcastle’s season.Fans took to Twitter to share their thoughts on it all…

Arsenal fans are not confident ahead of Milan match

Arsenal will attempt to avoid a fifth straight defeat in all competitions when they travel to AC Milan on Thursday night for the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie.

The Gunners suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Ostersunds in the Europa League on February 22 before losing 3-0 against Manchester City in the EFL Cup final.

Arsene Wenger’s side were then on the end of a 3-0 defeat to Man City in the Premier League, before Brighton & Hove Albion ran out 2-1 winners over the struggling London team on Sunday afternoon.

Arsenal will now visit Italian giants Milan for the first leg of their last-16 Europa League tie, and there is no downplaying the importance of the match as Wenger desperately looks to ease the pressure.

The club’s supporters have been looking ahead to the tie in Milan, and it would be fair to say that not too many are hopeful of picking up a positive result.

Newcastle fans react to news they will have no Premier League fixture for 21 days

Tottenham Hotspur’s progression to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup means that Newcastle United will now go 21 days without a Premier League fixture in March, but the news could be positive for injured striker Islam Slimani and Magpies fans have been quick to react. The Tyneside outfit knew prior to Spurs’ fifth round replay against Rochdale at Wembley that their own match at England’s national stadium on March 16 would be postponed if Mauricio Pochettino’s men advanced, and that is exactly what happened as they thrashed the League One strugglers 6-1.It now means that Rafa Benitez’s side have no game between hosting Southampton at St James’ Park on March 10 and Huddersfield Town on March 31 – two crucial fixtures in their battle for survival.Slimani is yet to play for the Toon since joining them on loan until the end of the season from Leicester City on deadline day in January, and while he is expected to miss the upcoming games against Liverpool and Saints he could be back for the match against the Terriers.Newcastle supporters took to social media to give their thoughts on the news and the Algerian centre-forward, and while one said “Slimani still won’t be fit”, another said “maybe Slimani will be fit by then”.Here is just a selection of the Twitter reaction…[ad_pod ]

How Tottenham must line up when they face Bournemouth on Sunday

Tottenham Hotspur will look to bounce back from their disappointing midweek Champions League exit when they face Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium in the Premier League on Sunday.

Spurs looked to be on course to see off Juventus when the in-form Son Heung-Min gave them a first-half lead, but two goals in the space of three second-half minutes for the Serie A giants saw them lose 2-1 on the night, and 4-3 on aggregate, to exit the competition.

The focus for the north London outfit over the course of the rest of the season must now be to secure a top-four finish in the top flight in order to qualify for Europe’s elite club competition again – starting on the south coast this weekend.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men further cemented their spot in the Champions League qualification spots when they beat Huddersfield Town 2-0 at Wembley last weekend – with Son once again scoring both of their goals – which has left them five points clear of fifth-placed Chelsea with nine matches of the season remaining.

The Argentine boss will know that they can’t afford to slip up between now and the end of the campaign with their London neighbours likely to be breathing down their necks if they do, and he will certainly take some solace from the fact that his side have won half of their 14 Premier League matches on the road this term.

The 46-year-old only made one enforced change from the side that beat Huddersfield for the match against Juventus on Wednesday night as Serge Aurier was suspended, but he will be considering freshening things up against the Cherries.

Here is how Tottenham must line up against Bournemouth on Sunday, ahead of Hugo Lloris in goal…

With Toby Alderweireld seemingly still not ready to start for Tottenham, Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen should continue at the heart of the defence against Bournemouth with few other options available.

Pochettino should consider shaking things up at full-back however and Kieran Tripper, who struggled against Juventus and came under criticism from his own supporters afterwards, should be replaced by Aurier at the Vitality Stadium.

Ben Davies didn’t have his best night either and with Danny Rose champing at the bit to start, he must be handed a place in the XI against the Cherries.

Tottenham’s official Twitter account reported on Friday that Eric Dier is a doubt for the clash against Bournemouth because of an elbow injury he sustained against Juventus, and he shouldn’t be risked on the south coast if he isn’t 100% fit.

Victor Wanyama is ready to start alongside Mousa Dembele in the middle of the park having had to be patient on the substitutes’ bench in recent weeks, and Pochettino should bring the Kenya international back into the XI on the south coast whatever the situation is on Sunday – especially after Dier put in a disappointing display against the Serie A giants and was slammed by his own supporters post-match.

Harry Kane and Son – who has now scored five goals in his last three appearances in all competitions for the club – are undroppable right now, but the same can’t be said for Dele Alli who was once again on the periphery against Juventus.

Perhaps it is time for the 21-year-old to be rested on the south coast, with Christian Eriksen moving into the middle and Lucas Moura earning a well-deserved start out wide.

That quartet should have more than enough to get the goals that Tottenham need to pick up an important three points at the Vitality Stadium.

West Ham fans react to Lanzini injury news

West Ham United have been hit with the news that Manuel Lanzini could potentially miss this weekend’s key Premier League clash against Southampton.

Lanzini was on the scoresheet as Argentina recorded a 2-0 win over Italy at Manchester City’s Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

However, according to an Argentine journalist, Lanzini missed training on Sunday after picking up a knock.

The attacker is now seen as a doubt for Argentina’s international friendly against Spain on Tuesday night, and West Ham fans are concerned that the playmaker could now miss Saturday’s clash with Southampton.

There is no downplaying the importance of the Southampton match as West Ham return to the field for the first time since the 3-0 Burnley defeat at the London Stadium, which led to a host of trouble.

Understandably, the club’s fans are feeling pretty grim as they face the prospect of being without the 25-year-old against the Saints.

A selection of the Twitter reaction in relation to the rumour can be seen below:

Leeds fans are furious they missed out on Mitrović

Leeds fans are furious their side didn’t do more to fix their goal drought during the January transfer window, and particularly for missing out on Aleksandar Mitrović.

For many Leeds fans, many of the problems at their club were summed up by a 14 second period in the second half of the 2-0 defeat to Fulham.

24 year-old Caleb Ekuban was put through on goal with the score at 1-0, only to fire directly into the keeper. Within 14 seconds, the hosts went down the other end and doubled their lead, with a fine counter-attacking move finished clinically by January signing Aleksandar Mitrović.

[ad_pod ]

You’d be hard pushed to find a set of fans more infuriated by their club’s transfer strategy than Leeds, and Tuesday’s defeat showed exactly why.

Mitrović was available on loan in January, and has scored eight times in nine starts for Fulham. Leeds signed their own striker in January – 19 year-old Tyler Roberts, who is yet to play for the club due to a shin injury.

Leeds’ knack of signing young, unproven players like Roberts and Ekuban is hurting them massively, and fans are fuming with their January business.
