Steyn and Roach fined for disciplinary run-ins

Dale Steyn and Kemar Roach were fined 100% and 50% of their match fees respectively after being found guilty of breaching the ICC code of conduct during the third Test between West Indies and South Africa in Barbados

Cricinfo staff01-Jul-2010Dale Steyn and Kemar Roach have been fined 100% and 50% of their match fees respectively after being found guilty of breaching the ICC code of conduct in separate incidents during the third Test between West Indies and South Africa.Steyn pleaded guilty to spitting in the direction of West Indies’ fielder Sulieman Benn, and was found to have committed a Level 2 breach of clause 2.2.11 of the ICC code of conduct, which relates to conduct of a serious nature that is contrary to the spirit of the game. The incident took place when Steyn was dismissed in the 132nd over of South Africa’s first innings after having exchanged words with Benn in the previous few overs. As Steyn walked off, he appeared to spit in Benn’s direction. The match referee Jeff Crowe condemned Steyn’s actions even though they had been instigated by Benn. “Dale’s behaviour was entirely unacceptable and he knows that. The fact that he was provoked by Sulieman during his time at the crease helps to explain his actions but cannot excuse them,” Crowe said. “Test cricket can be an examination of one’s emotions as well as skill and players must learn to keep those emotions in check sufficiently to play within the spirit of the game. This was an ugly moment of which I’m sure Dale is not proud.”Benn escaped without a penalty, but his team-mate Roach was punished for a run-in with Jacques Kallis on the fourth day. Roach repeatedly walked up to and exchanged words with the batsman after testing him with a series of bouncers. The stand-off threatened to escalate and required the intervention of the umpires and West Indies fielders to come under control. Roach pleaded guilty to a Level 1 offence and was found to have breached clause 2.1.8 of the code which relates to conduct of a minor nature that is contrary to the spirit of the game.”Kemar was involved in an unpleasant altercation in the final overs of the Test where he had to be pulled away by one of his fellow players,” Crowe said. “This was after he received warnings from the umpires and so it could easily have been avoided. It was not acceptable behaviour for a player at this or any level of the game and it’s not the first time Kemar has been involved in such behavior.”Since this was Roach’s second breach of this clause within a 12-month period, the range of sanctions applicable was more severe – between 50% of his match fee up to a maximum of his full match fee and/or two suspension points, which amounts to one Test match or two ODIs.

Leeds United eye late move for Noa Lang

Leeds United are eyeing up a late move for Noa Lang before transfer deadline day…

What’s the word?

That’s according to Belgian newspaper Het Belang van Limburg (via Sport Witness), who have mooted the Yorkshire outfit as a potential destination for the 22-year-old winger.

Although they face competition from Premier League rivals Arsenal.

The Whites were linked with a move for the Club Brugge sensation during the summer but evidently, no move came to fruition with the club instead signing Daniel James in a club-record deal.

Lang himself has even revealed that there is a “good chance” that he will depart the Belgian champions, sooner rather than later.

The initial report suggests that it’ll cost more than €25-30m (£21-25m) to secure him.

Raphinha 2.0

A new winger is probably the least of Leeds’ concerns this month but the form of James has been disappointing, if not shocking, and they will be resigned to the fact that Raphinha will not be around forever.

In fact, a move for Lang could bear some similarities to the arrival of the Brazil star, who was a relatively unknown but exciting young talent in France at the time.

[snack-amp-story url = “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/latest-leeds-united-lufc-transfer-rumours-gossip-bielsa-orta-radrizzani-elland-road-updates” title=”Read the latest Leeds news, transfer updates and much, much more!”]

United paid Stade Rennes around £17m for his signature and he’s made a huge impact in the year or so he’s been at Elland Road. He’s currently their top goalscorer (eight) and leading creator (2.1 key passes per game) this season.

By comparison, James has managed only two goals and one assist and is outside the top ten for average WhoScored rating in the squad.

Meanwhile, Lang has been excelling for Brugge – last season, he delivered 17 goals and 11 assists on their way to the Jupiler Pro League title. That form has continued into this season, where he has found the net eight times and laid on 11 assists, as per Transfermarkt.

It’s no wonder the Holland international has been dubbed a “phenomenon” by Belgian journalist Peter Vandenbempt and “pure class” by Filip Joos explained to Extra Time.

The 5 foot 10 dynamo is capable of operating on the other flank to Raphinha but could well become Bielsa’s next beast out wide. A new central midfielder may be the priority but Leeds should not turn their nose up at a talent as promising as the £22.5m-rated Lang.

Celtic: O’Rourke makes Carter-Vickers claim

Journalist Pete O’Rourke has claimed that Celtic have already been in talks with Tottenham Hotspur over a possible permanent deal for Cameron Carter-Vickers for a few months.

The lowdown

The £22k-p/w centre-back joined Ange Postecoglou’s side on a season-long loan from Spurs on transfer deadline day last August, and The Daily Record recently reported that Celtic hope to strike a permanent deal this month.

The loan agreement was believed to contain a £6m option to buy with ‘significant’ add-ons, but Spurs have indicated that there could be room for manoeuvre on the fee and the payment structure.

Celtic have spelt £2.2m so far this month on four new arrivals – Reo Hatate, Yosuke Ideguchi, Daizen Maeda and Johnny Kenny.

The latest

O’Rourke believes that the dialogue between Celtic and Tottenham over a permanent deal dates back to the early part of the season, with Carter-Vickers quickly making a big impression on Postecoglou at Parkhead.

The journalist told Give Me Sport: “I’m sure both clubs have been talking ever since Carter-Vickers made the move to Celtic Park in the summer. He’s established himself as a key player under Ange Postecoglou.”

The verdict

Carter-Vickers has been a regular at Celtic from the outset. He went straight into the team for the clash with Ross County on 11 September, the Hoops’ first game after he joined, and has only missed one Premiership match since.

The 24-year-old has been in excellent form, too. His average SofaScore rating of 7.45/10 ranks him fourth in the Celtic squad, above their top two goalscorers Kyogo Furuhashi and Jota.

Postecoglou said last month that he ‘wouldn’t have brought him in’ if he didn’t think there was long-term potential, while Parkhead legend Kenny Dalglish has dubbed the American an ‘excellent professional’.

Therefore, it should come as no surprise that the Hoops have apparently been working away at this move for an extended period, and hopefully the months of communication with Spurs won’t go to waste.

In other news, one pundit has been left very impressed by Celtic’s transfer window so far

Spurs handed boost in Kessie pursuit

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a huge boost in their bid to bring Franck Kessie to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the January transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim by Italian journalist Sandro Sabatini, who revealed when speaking to Radio Radio (via CalcioMercato) that in a fresh twist to the story, AC Milan would be willing to part with the midfielder this month, should the Serie A side receive an offer in the region of €10m (£8.5m).

Previous reports had claimed that Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici were preparing a lucrative offer for the Ivory Coast international on a pre-contract ahead of a potential switch to north London this summer, however, following Sabatini’s recent update, it would appear there is actually a deal to be done for the 25-year-old this January.

Speaking about Spurs’ interest in Kessie, Sabatini said: “Milan, from what I understand, if they receive a reasonable offer for Kessie’s remaining four months, they will sell [him]. €10m? Yes, and Tottenham can buy [him] for €10m.”

Conte will be buzzing

Considering Tottenham’s distinct lack of creativity in the middle of the park so far this season, the news that Kessie would be available to sign for as little as £8.5m in the current transfer window is news that is sure to have left Conte buzzing.

Indeed, in the current Premier League campaign, Tottenham’s central midfielders have scored just three goals, registered two assists and created a mere four big chances between them – with centre-back Eric Dier having created more big chances than any of Conte’s current options in the middle of the park.

As such, it is evident that the 52-year-old manager is in rather desperate need of a creative influence in his midfield ranks, something that the arrival of Kessie would undoubtedly bring an abundance of.

Indeed, over his 37 Serie A appearances last season, the £25m-rated man scored a whopping 13 goals, provided four assists and created five big chances for his teammates, in addition to taking an average of 1.3 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

These returns saw the £69k-per-week midfielder earn a highly impressive seasonal SofaScore match rating of 7.18, ranking him as AC Milan’s third-best player in the top flight of Italian football last time out.

So, should Spurs indeed be able to secure the services of Kessie for the second half of the current campaign, it would undoubtedly provide Conte’s chances of securing a top-four finish with a significant boost.

And, for a reported fee of just £8.5m, it would very much appear as if the 25-year-old’s signing is one that Tottenham would easily be able to afford – leading us to believe that the 52-capped international could well be pulling on the white of Spurs before the transfer window slams shut at the end of the month.

Pandey, Ojha help Madhya Pradesh to safety

After being outplayed on the first two days, Madhya Pradesh ended the third in a better position by restricting Rajasthan’s first-innings lead to 123, and then setting up a strong second innings

The Report by Amol Karhadkar in Jaipur19-Nov-2012
ScorecardAfter being outplayed on the first two days in Jaipur, Madhya Pradesh ended the third in a better position by restricting Rajasthan’s first-innings lead to 123, and then setting up a strong second innings. They may now escape with a draw, and not suffer outright defeat.Fast bowler Ishwar Pandey and wicketkeeper-opener Naman Ojha made MP’s recovery possible. Rajasthan were dismissed 379 due to Pandey’s six-wicket haul, and then Ojha’s unbeaten century took MP to 200 for 1 at stumps, ahead by 77. With the green wicket not offering much assistance to the bowlers, and without a quality spinner, Rajasthan may find it difficult to force a result on the final day.Pandey had taken four wickets on the second day, including those of stand-in captain Vineet Saxena, Ashok Menaria and centurion Rashmi Parida. He claimed two more on the third morning. Resuming at 306 for 6, wicketkeeper Sidhant Yagnik and Madhur Khatri began the day well for Rajasthan, hitting four boundaries in four overs. But then Pandey settled into a nagging line to left-hand batsman Yagnik, who edged one in the ninth over of the day to keeper Ojha. Before Rituraj Singh could get his eye in, Pandey put in some extra effort, and the additional bounce had Rituraj edging his delivery to Zafar Ali at second slip. Though Khatri, primarily in the side as an offspinner, played an effortless knock, he ran out of partners on 47 when Anand Rajan bowled last man Aniket Choudhury to earn his 100th first-class wicket.Rajasthan’s lead wasn’t a small one, especially with more than a day and a half remaining in the game. After a disastrous performance by MP’s top order on the opening day, when they were reduced to 71 for 5 in the first session, the openers had to come good to earn one point. Ojha and Ali learnt from their first-innings mistakes to put on 134 before Ali was trapped lbw by Rituraj.Ojha, however, was the star of the day. In the first innings, he had poked at and edged a delivery that moved away from off stump. This time, Ojha didn’t flash his bat outside off for the first hour. He preferred to leave as many balls as he could.Ojha didn’t go into a shell either; he chose the balls he wanted to score off. Soon after he reached his fifty, he went after the part-time spinner Ashok Menaria, hitting two sixes over long-off and cutting to the point boundary. In the next over, however, Ali was dismissed. With Pankaj Singh and Rituraj steaming in, Ojha, batting on 78, defended for the next hour.Only in the last over of the day, when Khatri was brought on, did Ojha attack again. He stepped out to hit a six over long-off and then swept the next ball through square leg for a boundary to raise his ninth first-class century.”[Ojha] was terribly disappointed after being dismissed in that manner (in the first innings),” MP coach Mukesh Sahani said. “We had a chat about it. He realised that he hadn’t justified his position of being among the senior players in the team by getting out in that manner. It was heartening to see him rectifying it.”Despite playing first-class cricket for 12 years, Ojha has not fulfilled his batting potential “I haven’t converted as many starts into hundreds as I should have but over the last few years, I have realised the need for scoring big hundreds and have been working towards it,” Ojha said. “Since I came to the Ranji Trophy days after playing the Champions League [for Delhi Daredevils], it took time for me to switch into the first-class mode. But now that I have, I hope I can continue for the rest of the season.”After stumps, most of the MP squad played a game of football until the light faded, unlike other days. Though the team had conceded three points with the first-innings lead, their relieved faces indicated that their primary objective at the start of the penultimate day – to avoid being in a position to concede an outright victory to Rajasthan – had been achieved.

Deserving Johnson earns a rest

Mitchell Johnson put his hand up over the past week, now he can put his feet up

Brydon Coverdale in Hamilton31-Mar-2010Mitchell Johnson put his hand up over the past week, now he can put his feet up. His second ten-wicket match haul delivered Australia victory in Hamilton, their seventh win from eight Tests this summer, and he’s ready for a break. Johnson has been Australia’s leading weapon this season with 41 victims at 25.90, and Ricky Ponting believes his strike bowler has never been performing better. He finished the Seddon Park Test with 10 for 132, having collected six in the second innings, but the most impressive thing was the way he kept digging the ball in short on a pitch offering little and regularly broke 150kph. Johnson has come a long way since his disappointing Ashes tour and Ponting said his fast man had learnt a lot, including from the Scott Styris headbutt at the start of the one-day series.”To be able to bowl the way he did in the second innings of this game, and probably bowled as quick in the second innings of this game as he has right through that period of time, says a lot about him,” Ponting said. “This tour in particular has probably been the best and most consistent I’ve seen him bowl. To get ten wickets in this last game here is a great way for him to end a couple of years of cricket.”Mitch is a pretty fiery competitor and the leader of our attack I guess as well, he wants to stand up and be that aggressive sort of bowler. He generally is at his best when he is like that. He might have even got a few fans back with the way he bowled here. Once again, those little things like [the Styris incident] are really good for these guys, they learn a lot about themselves when they are confronted with those issues and having the 15,000-20,000 crowd on their back. He is getting better game by game.”Johnson now gets three weeks away before the World Twenty20 and plans to relax at the beach and in the wineries of Margaret River. The challenge for Australia has always been to manage Johnson’s workload as he is the sort of bowler for whom too much time away from the game can be a negative.”Whenever we’ve given him an extended break he’s come back and it’s taken him a little while to get back in to it again,” Ponting said. “What we have to do is make sure we don’t run him into the ground. I know he’s got a nice little break with no IPL, so the guys will make sure he gets appropriate work done to be fresh and fit and ready to go for England [to play Pakistan].”Johnson said this week that he was happy to kick back and relax instead of heading to the IPL, despite what he conceded was tempting money, in order to keep himself fresh for Australia. His main goal is to make sure he is peaking for next summer’s Ashes series in Australia, so that he can make up for his meltdown in England and bowl his team to victory to regain the urn.”I need my breaks now and then but not big breaks, two or three weeks is probably my maximum break,” Johnson said. “I think the more bowling I do the better I feel. I know when I come back from a little break I do feel a bit stiff and sore, I know definitely the more bowling I do the better I feel about my bowling.”I think I have definitely improved, during that Ashes series I had a bad one at Lord’s and probably wasn’t as consistent throughout that whole series. But you are going to have those ups and downs throughout your career and I think I have learnt from that. I think I have proved it since then and I think I have definitely stepped up a little bit.”

Viv Richards Stadium returns as international host

Announcement of general elections in Trinidad and Tobago forced a change in the schedule of the West Indies series against South Africa

Cricinfo staff28-Apr-2010The ICC has approved the return of the Viv Richards Stadium in Antigua to international cricket after the announcement of general elections in Trinidad and Tobago forced a change in the schedule of the West Indies series against South Africa starting next month. The two Twenty20s and the first two one-day internationals of the series were to be held at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad, but have now been switched to the Viv Richards Stadium. The Antigua ground had been suspended from hosting international cricket by the ICC because of its unfit outfield which led to the cancellation of a Test between West Indies and England last year after just 10 deliveries. Since that fiasco, the ground has successfully hosted an Under-15 regional tournament and several first-class fixtures. The West Indies board said that the stadium had been inspected and cleared by the ICC to hold top-flight cricket.”As per ICC instructions, over the past year, appropriate work was carried out and monitored by the WICB and an inspection of the ground was carried out by Jeff Crowe of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC match referees,” the ICC said in a statement.South Africa take on West Indies in two Twenty20s, five ODIs and three Tests in a series which lasts from May 19 to June 30.

Kedar Jadhav helps Delhi end losing streak

Kedar Jadhav shone on his IPL debut, scoring a half-century that helped Delhi end a three-match losing streak•Indian Premier LeagueDavid Warner exploded at the top and Kedar Jadhav provided a fiery finish to charge Delhi Daredevils to a strong 183, which they defended with relative ease. It was Delhi’s first win after three losses and also marked Royal Challengers Bangalore’s first loss at home. The pitch was drier than the previous tracks at the Chinnaswamy Stadium and Bangalore had to do much of the damage against the new ball if they were to hunt down the strong total. However, Jacques Kallis and Manish Pandey were kept relatively quiet by tight spells from Dirk Nannes and Umesh Yadav. Nannes hit the deck hard and moved the ball enough to upset batsmen’s timing and Yadav, the fastest Indian bowler currently going around in the circuit, with speeds consistently ticking over 140 kmph, surprised the batsmen with his line, length and bounce. And it wasn’t all brawn from the youngster; he kept it relatively full to Kallis but hurled a few short deliveries at Pandey to keep him on a leash.Bangalore’s second opportunity to break free came in the eight over with the introduction of Andrew McDonald and Amit Mishra. It was the make or break moment, with Bangalore needing 129 from 13 overs, but Mishra slipped in fine spell to turn the game decisively in Delhi’s favour. Mishra removed Kallis with a googly and induced Robin Uthappa to edge the reverse-sweep to inflict a double-strike from which Bangalore couldn’t’ recover. McDonald went for 18 runs in his first seven deliveries – Uthappa producing the shot of the day with a nonchalantly-hit six over the straight boundary – but bounced back in his second over by taking out Pandey, and when Rahul Dravid ran himself out in the same over the chase had derailed. There was just one other moment of thrilling drama and it was provided by AB de Villiers, who jumped back at long-on to take an amazing one-handed catch, even as the ball appeared to have passed him, to get rid of Praveen Kumar. The Delhi bowlers produced a disciplined performance, but it was their batsmen who set up the game. There were three phases of play in Delhi’s innings – an explosive start by Warner, a serene partnership in the middle-overs between AB de Villiers and Dinesh Karthik, and a fiery finish provided by Jadhav. It was Jadhav who gave Delhi the perfect finish, but for the majority of the innings they rode on the momentum provided by Warner. It was as though he was playing stick cricket – see the ball and give it a mighty thump. The shot that stood out was a crunchy pulled-six off Dale Steyn but what caught his impish mindset was actually a mishit against the same bowler. It was just about back of length outside off and Warner went for an ambitious pull, but the ball screamed towards the cover boundary. It was Twenty20 cricket at its best (or worst, depending on your point of view) and both the bowler and the batsman smiled. There were no smiles from any bowler for the rest of the time when Warner flat-batted length deliveries over in-field and launched mighty sixes over long-on, but the entertainment ended when he fell, unable to clear long-off with yet another of his lofted hits. When he departed in the fourth over, the score read 44 for 1 and it soon turned to 58 for 2 with Sehwag falling to Vinay Kumar, who is gaining a reputation for taking big wickets. The game changed in character from there on. de Villiers and Karthik preferred to deal in singles as they nudged and drove their way around. The period wasn’t without its shares of thrills, with de Villiers pulling and Karthik sweeping Kumble for boundaries but it was definitely a lot quieter than at the start. It threatened to get grimmer for Delhi when Karthik and de Villiers got run out – Karthik backed up too far at the non-striker’s end and de Villiers was caught short by a direct hit from Eoin Morgan at backward point – but Jadhav, an unknown commodity for many of the Bangalore bowlers, connected with a few big hits to push Delhi towards a strong total. The shot of his stay was an audacious flat-batted six over long-on to a short delivery from Jacques Kallis, and he moved around the crease and also threw in a few deft shots – a late cut against Kumble being the highlight. The bowlers, caught off-guard, didn’t know whether to bounce at him or bowl full, and Jadhav exploited that to the fullest to push Delhi to a very competitive total.

Smith to miss warm-ups against Lions

Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, will miss his team’s two practice games against the Highveld Lions this week as part of his rehabilitation from a tennis elbow surgery

Cricinfo staff02-Sep-2009Graeme Smith, the South Africa captain, will miss his team’s two practice games against the Highveld Lions this week as part of his rehabilitation from a tennis elbow surgery. However, the team physiotherapist Brandon Jackson assured that Smith was progressing well, and that he should be fit for the Champions Trophy warm-up match against West Indies in Potchefstroom on September 17.”Graeme’s elbow is healing well post surgery,” Jackson was quoted as saying in Cricket South Africa’s official website. “He is in week 11 of a structured 13-week return to full activity programme. He is currently batting against tennis balls and against underarm bowling with a cricket ball, together with intensive gym strengthening and boxing.”This excludes him from matches this week. We expect him to return to full batting activity in ten days’ time.”Smith first suffered the tennis elbow injury during the IPL in 2008 and that forced him to miss the last three ODIs against England in August. He was adviced to undergo surgery but was still fit to continue playing. He kept postponing the surgery, in order to make himself available for South Africa’s busy season later in the year, which included the tour of Australia. He finally went under the knife after the World Twenty20 and was confident of recovering before the Champions Trophy at home, starting September 22. He has already been named in South Africa’s squad for the tournament, as well as the Cape Cobras’ squad for the Champions League in India next month.

'How we forced the red card was brilliant!' – Oliver Glasner praises Crystal Palace for 'attacking and fighting' as new manager gets off to winning start against Burnley

The Eagles got Glasner's tenure at Selhurst Park off to a winning start thanks to second-half goals from Chris Richards, Jordan Ayew, and Jean-Philippe Mateta. Their pressure eventually told after Josh Brownhill was sent off in the 35th minute, with former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Glasner praising the performance and the way their attack led to the midfielder's dismissal.

AdvertisementWHAT OLIVER GLASNER SAID

He told : "Sometimes the players forget about keeping the balance in the game but how we forced the red card was brilliant and we attacked very high. It was really nice to see. We had a great spirit from the beginning and the players tried to do everything that the analysts prepared for them. Also thank you to my staff because we were only here for three days. My feeling was the fans were happy to see the players attacking and fighting, they were very loud, this is what we want. They had a great afternoon and now they can go somewhere in a pub and enjoy one or two beers."

Ex-Wolfsburg manager Glasner replaced Roy Hodgson as Palace boss earlier this month after the latter agreed to step down from his role following a health scare and a poor run of results. While this win over relegation-threatened Burnley will not solve the club's issues, it does put them eight points clear of the bottom three. Conversely, Clarets boss Vincent Kompany will be under intense pressure to keep his job as they are 19th and eight points from safety.
